We are thrilled to release our third edition of the Mobility & Equipment eGuide! Following two hugely successful editions with such incredible feedback we had no choice but to make this an annual eGuide, refreshed with all the latest AT products on the markets.

We’ve covered manual and powered wheelchairs, pushchairs and strollers, bikes and trikes, standers, walkers, seating and positioning, bathroom aids and beds and sleep systems.

I hope this eGuide becomes your AT bible – we’ve tried to ensure a variation of products are included to suit all needs and abilities. What happens at a mobility equipment fitting

When your child is fitted for a piece of mobility equipment such as a wheelchair, walker or stander, the primary goal is to assess their needs and ensure that the equipment meets their specific requirements. Much of the information gathered will be used for an NDIS funding application but it also serves an important practical use in ensuring that any equipment prescribed will be functionally appropriate for your child.

The fitting process typically involves several steps and may vary depending on the specific device and your child’s needs. Here’s an overview of what may happen during a fitting:

EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT

The fitting process begins with a comprehensive evaluation and assessment of your child’s abilities, mobility requirements, physical measurements, and any specific medical or therapeutic needs. A team of professionals, including occupational therapists, physical therapists, and assistive technology specialists, may be involved in this process.

DISCUSSION OF GOALS

Parents or caregivers, along with the professionals, will discuss the goals and expectations for the assistive technology. This helps in determining the appropriate type of equipment and customisation required to meet your child’s needs effectively.

EQUIPMENT SELECTION

Based on the evaluation and goals discussed, the team will recommend the most suitable product. Depending on the product category, they will consider factors such as the child’s mobility level, posture and positioning requirements, terrain and environment of use (does the home have narrow doorways for example), and any additional accessories or adaptations needed.

MEASUREMENTS AND ADJUSTMENTS

Precise measurements of your child’s body dimensions will be taken to ensure proper fit and comfort. This includes height, weight, seating posture, leg length, arm length, and more. The equipment will be adjusted and customised accordingly to provide optimal support and functionality.

TRIAL AND EVALUATION

Once the initial adjustments are made, professionals may closely observe your child’s comfort, posture, alignment, and ability to manoeuvre or operate the device. They may make further modifications based on the child’s feedback and observations during a trial period.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION

You can work with a provider to obtain training on how to properly operate and maintain the assistive technology. You’ll also learn about safety precautions, adjustments, transfers, and general care of the equipment. Additionally, you may receive guidance on incorporating the equipment into your child’s daily activities and therapeutic routines.

FOLLOW-UP AND REVIEW

After the fitting, a follow-up session may be scheduled to assess the child’s progress with the equipment. This allows for any necessary fine-tuning or adjustments to be made to ensure ongoing optimal performance and address any emerging needs.

Walkers

Factors such as a child’s ability to self-propel, level of trunk control, and need for specialised seating or positioning are considered. Based on the evaluation, a team will recommend a suitable wheelchair type, such as manual, powered, or specialised options like tilt-in-space or reclining wheelchairs. The appropriate seating system, cushions, and accessories are also discussed.

Standers

A child’s weight-bearing abilities, range of motion, and positioning needs are evaluated. The goal is to promote weightbearing and maintain proper alignment. The appropriate type of stander (e.g., mobile, static, supine, prone) is chosen based on the child’s needs. Accessories like trunk supports, knee supports, and ankle supports are discussed if required.

A child’s walking ability, balance, and weight-bearing capacity are assessed. The need for upper-body support and stability is also considered. The appropriate type of walker (e.g., posterior, anterior, reciprocal) is selected based on the child’s needs. Features like wheels, brakes, and accessories (e.g., forearm supports) are discussed if required.

Strollers

Seating and positioning needs during transportation are assessed. Considerations include postural support, head control, comfort, and ease of transfers. The appropriate stroller type is selected based on the child’s needs, such as lightweight, folding, or specialised positioning strollers. Options like reclining features, adaptive seating, and headrests are discussed.

Overall, the fitting process for any piece of assistive technology equipment aims to ensure that the product meets the child’s individual needs, promotes independence, is safe to use, and contributes positively to their overall well-being. It involves a collaborative approach between the child, parents or caregivers, and a team of professionals with expertise in paediatric rehabilitation and assistive technology.

Achieving the best outcomes from your AT trials

Living your best life sometimes requires a little extra support. Whether it’s assistance with daily activities, mobility, or independence, the right Assistive Technology (AT) can make a world of difference.

To ensure the best possible outcomes, a thorough trial process is essential. A wellplanned AT trial helps determine the most suitable equipment for your needs. This process involves four key steps: Planning, Research, Assessment, and Trials.

PLANNING

Start by identifying your needs and setting clear goals. What do you want to achieve with your AT? Keeping these goals in focus will make the decision-making process easier, as you can evaluate each option based on how well it meets your objectives.

Schedule an assessment with your therapist, who can provide expert guidance on the best options for you. Their input is crucial not only for selecting the right equipment but also for preparing reports for any necessary funding applications. Additionally, discussing potential challenges or barriers you may face will help create a proactive plan for overcoming them.

RESEARCH

Gather as much information as possible about available AT solutions. Explore online resources, talk to your therapist, attend AT expos, and visit local suppliers

with knowledgeable product specialists. These steps will help you gain a better understanding of the features and benefits of different equipment options.

ASSESSMENT

A thorough assessment with your therapist ensures that all necessary factors are considered before trialing equipment. Ask yourself:

• What tasks do I want to accomplish?

• What level of support do I need, and where? Your therapist will determine what supports or features are essential for your postural/balance support, movement support, pressure relieving needs, sensory needs, comfort of use and optimal function.

• What are my non-negotiables in terms of comfort and functionality?

AT selection often involves compromise, so knowing what matters most to you will help keep your trial focused on finding the best fit. It’s also a good idea to discuss potential future needs—choosing equipment that can adapt as your requirements change can save time and resources in the long run.

TRIALS

To make the most of your AT trial, follow these key steps:

• Have the right equipment available. Work with your therapist and AT provider to ensure suitable options are on hand for testing.

• Consider backup options. If possible, trial multiple solutions at the same time

to compare and make more informed decisions.

• Keep an open mind. The best solution might not be what you initially expected, so be willing to explore different options.

• Provide honest feedback. AT is highly individualised, and what works for someone else may not be right for you. Clear communication with your team is essential to finding your best fit.

High-cost mobility aids and equipment

Buying high-cost assistive technology for your child or young adult can be daunting. High-cost AT can be more complex and there are more requirements from the NDIS to get funding approved.

What is considered high cost assistive technology (AT)?

High-cost assistive technology is any item of AT that costs more than $15,000. By its nature, high-cost AT tends to be complex to use or set-up. It’s sometimes custom-made to meet an individual’s needs. High-cost AT includes a range of mobility equipment such as power wheelchairs, scooters and some advanced walking aids.

QHow do I know if my child needs high-cost assistive technology?

A healthcare professional, such as an occupational therapist or physiotherapist, will be able to assist in determining if high-cost assistive technology might be right for your child. They’ll evaluate your child’s mobility, daily living and goals to recommend the most suitable equipment. The NDIS may include funding in your child’s plan for an AT assessment if they haven’t already had one.

Can the NDIS cover the cost of high-cost mobility aids?

The NDIS can fund high-cost mobility aids if they are deemed

reasonable and necessary. You’ll need to provide the completed AT assessment along with detailed recommendations and quotes from suppliers with your request.

If the NDIS approves the purchase, the item will usually appear in your child’s plan as a stated support under the Capital supports budget. Sometimes, the NDIS lists a specific item by brand. Other times, they approve a price range for a type of equipment, which gives you more choice in finding something that suits your child’s needs, as long as it falls within the approved budget.

QI’m not sure which item will be best for my child?

Can I use my child’s NDIS funding to trial assistive technology?

Absolutely! With so many brands and options available, it’s often a good idea to test an item before making a purchase or rental commitment. Some providers offer free trials of their products.

If a free trial isn’t available, you can use your child’s NDIS funds to cover the cost. For children on a PACE plan, funding for trials comes from the new Capital supports – Assistive Technology, Maintenance, Repair and Rental budget. If your child has an older or legacy plan,

you may be able to use Core supports flexibly to fund the trial. Remember to include details about the outcome of any trials with any AT assessment.

As your child or teen’s goals and needs are constantly changing, there is built-in flexibility in the NDIS for AT requests. If your child or teen’s needs have changed, you can contact the NDIS at any time. While an AT request can be submitted at any time during your child’s plan, please note that your request may initiate a plan reassessment by the NDIS.

What support is available if my child has issues with their mobility aid?

If your child has difficulty using the aid, check in with your OT or physiotherapist. They can help demonstrate the best way to use the equipment based on your child’s needs and help you resolve any problems.

My child wants a custom wheelchair with certain features. Will the NDIS cover this?

The NDIS may cover the cost of a wheelchair with specific features if it is considered reasonable and necessary to meet your child’s needs. This may include customised seating, controls or

However, it’s important to note that the NDIS will generally only fund the standard level of AT needed based on a person’s goals, such as a wheelchair with standard features and specifications.

In deciding whether to fund an item, the NDIS will compare the quotes to expected price ranges for a similar item to determine if the proposed AT is good value for money. If less expensive options are available that will suit your child’s needs, the NDIS is likely to fund the cheaper choice.
