Automate 2025 Draws Record-Breaking Crowd as Interest in Robotics Surges Automate 2025, the largest robotics and automation trade show in North America, celebrated unprecedented success in Detroit with more than 45,000 registrants and over 900 exhibitors. Hosted by the Association for Advancing Automation (A3), the four-day event from May 12–15 marked the biggest show in its history, occupying the full expanse of Huntington Place, including both main and lower levels.

This year’s growth underscores the mounting demand for advanced automation technologies across all sectors. “The tremendous growth of Automate this year demonstrates that automation is more relevant today than ever before,” said A3 President Jeff Burnstein. “Robotics and automation technology is advancing at a rapid pace, and we are seeing an increase in interest from companies in every industry all over the world.”

Automate 2025 featured high-profile keynote speakers such as Brad Holmes of the Detroit Lions, Deepu Talla of NVIDIA, and Ujjwal Kumar of Teradyne Robotics.

Educational opportunities were abundant, with more than 900 conference attendees learning from over 200 expert speakers on topics like AI, cybersecurity, cobots, and digital twins. The show also hosted student-focused initiatives, including the inaugural Student Challenge and Educator Day, which brought educators and young talent to the forefront of the industry.

Pagani Partners with Conflux to Boost Thermal Performance in the Utopia Hypercar Conflux Technology has announced a multi-year partnership with Pagani to integrate its advanced heat exchanger technology into the new Pagani Utopia — a bespoke hypercar combining extreme power, precision engineering, and sustainable design. The agreement spans six years and marks a significant milestone for additive manufacturing in high-performance automotive applications.

The Utopia, powered by a custom 6-liter twin-turbo Pagani V12 engine paired with a Xtrac 7-speed transmission, demanded a thermal management solution capable of handling intense performance demands. Conflux developed a customized heat exchanger using additive manufacturing, achieving a 30% increase in heat rejection over traditional designs. This improvement ensures optimal thermal performance even in the harshest driving environments.

Testing included thermal shock trials and extensive track validation. The collaboration underscores the growing role of advanced manufacturing in pushing the limits of automotive innovation. “Our advanced heat exchangers are designed to enable new levels of effectiveness, perfectly complementing the engineering craftsmanship that Pagani is celebrated for,” said Conflux CEO Michael Fuller.

With additional funding secured through a recent AUD 11 million Series B round, Conflux plans to scale its Conflux Production Systems (CPS) for high-demand industries such as aerospace, defense, motorsports, and energy.

Reshoring Gains Traction as Manufacturers Rethink Global Supply Chains First American Bank is seeing a marked shift in the strategies of U.S. manufacturers as reshoring — the movement to bring production back to American soil — becomes a key part of supply chain restructuring. Sarah M. Eikenberry, VP of Commercial Lending, reports that manufacturers are re-evaluating global operations due to shipping delays, tariffs, and rising geopolitical risks.

Reshoring is increasingly attractive for reasons beyond cost. Greater control over quality, logistics, and customer responsiveness are now top priorities. ICML Names Bryan Coggins as CEO, Elevates Key Leaders Amid Global Growth The International Council for Machinery Lubrication (ICML), the globally recognized authority on lubrication certification and education, has appointed Bryan Bryan Coggins Coggins as its new Chief Executive Officer. I

n a rapidly evolving manufacturing landscape, traditional methods are increasingly being challenged by next-generation technologies. At the forefront of this transformation is Mantle, a company co-founded

by Ted Sorom and Stephen Conner, whose pioneering work in additive manufacturing is changing how companies approach toolmaking. During a detailed webinar, the co-founders outlined their mission to automate and modernize the production of precision mold tooling using proprietary 3D printing methods. Their story is not just about technological innovation, but about solving critical industry bottlenecks.

From Concept to Company: Engineering a Solution Ted Sorom, Mantle's CEO, described himself as a “recovering mechanical engineer.” With years of experience designing and manufacturing molded plastic parts and the tools behind them, Sorom had a front-row view of the inefficiencies in traditional toolmaking. His co-founder, Stephen Conner, a Ph.D. from Berkeley and Mantle’s Chief Science Officer, brought deep expertise in material synthesis, particularly in metal pastes used for applications like solar cells and semiconductors. Together, they identified a unique opportunity: harness Conner’s research into flowable metal pastes to create production-grade steel components through 3D printing.

Unlike existing solutions in the additive manufacturing space, which often delivered rough parts requiring extensive post-processing, the Mantle team focused on a process that combined printing with high-resolution shaping to produce parts with exceptional surface finishes and tolerances. Their goal was to eliminate many of the downstream operations associated with tool production—dramatically reducing lead times and cost.

The Problem with Traditional and Existing Additive Approaches Mantle’s solution addresses a well-known pain point: the time- and laborintensive nature of making high-quality mold inserts, especially for injection molding. Conventional methods can take weeks or months, require skilled toolmakers (a dwindling workforce), and often involve expensive materials and equipment. Even modern additive manufacturing solutions fall short when applied to this domain.

According to Conner, most existing metal 3D printing technologies fall into two categories: melting-based systems like powder bed fusion (PBF) and sintering-based approaches such as binder jetting or metal injection molding (MIM). While PBF can deliver high-density parts, it typically leaves a rough surface finish and induces residual stresses due to the thermal nature of the process. This makes them unsuitable for precision tools without extensive

post-processing. On the other hand, sintering methods like binder jetting offer faster print speeds but suffer from unpredictable shrinkage and low resolution—again failing to meet tooling standards.

Sorom emphasized that tooling is uniquely demanding because it requires all characteristics—surface finish, dimensional accuracy, mechanical strength, and machinability—to be optimized simultaneously.

Additive technologies that can meet one or two of these requirements usually fall short on the others.

Enter the Mantle Method: Paste + Precision Mantle’s proprietary solution begins with a flowable metal paste—a mixture of steel powders, binders, and solvents—that is printed in layers. After every 10 printed layers, a CNC-controlled shaping step trims and refines the geometry using ultra-precise cutting tools, some as small as six-thousandths of an inch. This alternating cycle of printing and shaping results in a “green body” with high density and excellent definition.

Once the printing is complete, the part is transferred to a high-temperature furnace for sintering. Unlike conventional MIM or binder jet parts, which may shrink by 20% or more, Mantle’s green bodies shrink less than 9% during sintering, enabling tight control over final dimensions. The end result is a fully dense tool steel component with surface finishes rivaling those achieved through EDM (electrical discharge machining) and tolerances suitable for injection mold inserts.

Sorom noted that this precision opens up the possibility of skipping many post-processing steps altogether.

“You can polish right off the printer,” he said, adding that Mantle customers have achieved high-quality finishes— sometimes even lens-grade—without the need for secondary machining.

Performance and Production: Validated in the Field Mantle’s technology is not just a lab experiment. Sorom and Conner presented several real-world applications where their 3D-printed inserts are currently in use. One standout case involved Tessy Plastics, which used a Mantleprinted mold insert to produce nearly 6.8 million parts in a high-volume packaging application. The tool held up with

performance equivalent to conventional H13 steel molds.

Another notable example came from Haco, a company that had previously invested in metal powder bed fusion for tooling. After adopting Mantle’s platform, they relegated their older metal printer to producing jigs and fixtures, finding Mantle far more efficient for tooling applications. Multiple OEMs, molders, and toolmakers have echoed this sentiment, citing benefits such as reduced lead times, lower costs, and greater flexibility in design and production scheduling.

The economic and strategic implications are significant.

In an era where reshoring and supply chain reliability are top priorities, Mantle offers a compelling value proposition: faster turnaround times, reduced dependence on overseas suppliers, and minimal reliance on hard-to-find skilled labor.

Rethinking the Role of the Toolmaker A recurring theme throughout the presentation was the evolving role of the toolmaker. Sorom acknowledged that Mantle’s system does not eliminate the need for skilled professionals—designing the mold, fitting components, and final finishing still require expertise. However, by automating the production of inserts, Mantle frees toolmakers to focus on higher-value activities, supporting more projects in less time.

This shift is especially important in a labor-constrained market. According to Sorom, the number of U.S. toolmakers has declined by half since the late 1990s. Moreover, the relative compensation for toolmakers has also dropped, making it harder to attract young talent. this gap, enabling existing teams to be more productive and responsive.

Material Science and Metallurgical Rigor One of the key challenges in developing a new metal 3D printing technology is ensuring that the printed material meets the same mechanical and chemical standards as conventionally made metals. Mantle’s approach uses well-known tool steels—primarily H13 and 420—and carefully controls their chemistry to fall within industry specifications. Conner described how they use Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) to validate every batch and ensure consistency.

Further, heat treatment after sintering brings the hardness of the material into the range required for high-performance tooling. In its as-sintered state, Mantle’s H13 reaches the low 40s on the Rockwell C scale, and post-treatment pushes it into the low 50s HRC—on par with standard mold steels.

The team also highlighted how their shaping process avoids heat build-up that could cause warping or cold working in the green body. Cutting is performed dry, and chips are evacuated as fine dust. The resulting geometry is both sharp and dimensionally stable, a critical factor for tight-tolerance features.

The P200 Platform: Purpose-Built for Tooling Mantle’s current flagship product is the P200, a fourthgeneration printer that integrates everything the company has learned since its founding in 2015. Built on a high-accuracy CNC platform, the P200 supports multiple tool changes, high-speed motion, and advanced sensors for monitoring every step of the process.

What sets it apart is not just the hardware, but the

software. Mantle’s custom CAM engine automatically generates tool paths based on part geometry, optimizing cutting strategies layer by layer. The software also manages thermal profiles and part orientation to minimize distortion during sintering.

Coupled with the company’s proprietary furnace— which maintains a tightly controlled atmosphere during the sintering process—the P200 represents a turnkey solution for insert production. Sorom described it as a “lights-out” system that can run unattended, making it ideal for companies dealing with staffing shortages or high workloads.

The Future of Tooling: Flexible, Scalable, Local The potential impact of Mantle’s technology extends well beyond the individual mold insert. By dramatically reducing lead times and enabling in-house insert production, companies can iterate designs faster, respond to customer changes more quickly, and reduce dependence on outsourced tooling.

This flexibility is particularly appealing in industries like medical devices, consumer products, and industrial components, where tooling changes can hold up entire product launches. Mantle’s solution empowers manufacturers to take control of their tooling strategy—building the exact inserts they need, when they need them.

immermann, Inc. has successfully installed and commissioned its advanced FZU37 portal milling machine—featuring an expansive 5m x 4m x 1.5m work envelope—at Century Tool, a key tool and die manufacturer based in Fenton, Michigan. The investment, part of the Tooling Tech Group's modernization efforts, has already led to a 30% increase in production capacity.

Tom Bradford, Director of Manufacturing at Century Tool, remarked, “The table size, speed, and precision of this Zimmermann machine have elevated our capabilities significantly.” He and operator David Hawes specifically highlighted the power of the onboard Heidenhain TNC7 CNC—one of the first of its kind in the U.S.—which brings integrated simulation, real-time cycle validation, and CAD/CAM alignment to the shop floor.

Zimmermann President Cornelius Kiesel explained that the FZU37 was selected not only to replace a smaller, decommissioned machine but also to enhance finishing and semi-finishing operations. “We engineered the installation to avoid major foundation work, yet expanded travel by 79% in the same footprint—achieving 5000mm x 4000mm x 1500mm.”

changer, top cover, mist extraction, high-pressure coolant, laser tool measurement, and probing systems. The machine also includes a reinforced table, raised side walls, and an extended spindle housing to accommodate deep-cavity molds and large structural parts.

Training and support played a pivotal role in deployment. Bradford credited Zimmermann’s project manager Alfio Campagna for driving the machine’s successful integration. He also praised Heidenhain’s team, who provided five days of CNC training—three in Chicago and two onsite. Hawes, already proficient in Heidenhain systems, appreciated the TNC7’s Smart Programming, which allows for touchscreen contouring and conversion into Klartext code. The CNC interfaces smoothly with Century’s Visi (CAD) and Tebis (CAM) systems, streamlining part programming.

The TNC7 also enables component monitoring—flagging spindle overload or drivetrain wear in real time. This predictive maintenance data is crucial

for Century, which often performs multi-day machining cycles on single mold components, removing over 90% of the workpiece material.

Bradford added, “We specialize in large tools for compression molding—everything from automotive to off-highway and infrastructure. Surface finish is critical, especially for Class-A exterior panels. This machine maintains tight tolerances over long runs, which is essential for us.”

2. Prioritize security improvements Apply a risk-based approach to help prioritize security upgrades to focus on the most critical gaps first. The risk assessment conducted in the first step above can supply insights about the gaps. To gain further context, ask questions such as: » How critical is this asset or process to production

operations, uptime, data integrity or other factors important to the organization? » How are critical assets protected? Do current safeguards reduce risks? Are there missing cybersecurity protections that would greatly reduce the risk of a breach? » What’s the potential cost if compromised, including downtime, compliance failure, fines, reputational damage and other factors important to the organization?

You must understand your organization’s risk tolerance before you can effectively prioritize gaps and improvements.

Ultimately, your organization’s specific level of acceptable risk will guide your decisions here. To make the most accurate decisions, it’s best to apply some quantification methodology around risks and potential costs.

3. Build a cyber incident response plan Timelines imposed by NIS2 and the SEC for reporting incidents were recently tightened. For example, NIS2 requires reporting known incident details within 24 hours and providing a full notification report within 72 hours.

Likewise, the new SEC rule mandates disclosure of an incident within four business days after you determine the incident is material.

You can help your team respond and report incidents more effectively by establishing processes and procedures with a documented plan. Recommended incident response plan components include: » Assigning key personnel to your incident response team » Applying roles and responsibilities for each team member » Capturing incident data, using the tools in place for incident analysis

» Understanding the steps and timelines now required for reporting, assessing and responding to incidents

4. Implement tabletop exercises Tabletop exercises are another essential step for boosting your incident response team’s efficiency. Responders must practice the plan so they can work through the steps before they’re thrown into responding to a real cybersecurity incident.

Conducting exercises regularly (from quarterly to annually) will also boost your team’s confidence and competence, yielding continuous improvements, as well as increasing the speed and effectiveness of incident response actions. Larger organizations, or those in critical infrastructure sectors would be best advised to consider more frequent, even quarterly tabletop exercises.

Boosting your cybersecurity posture with a defense in depth strategy will enhance your OT and organizational resilience against cyberattacks.

Defense in depth should include controls at every level, from the network and endpoints to applications and access management.

Rockwell Automation recommends the following best practices: » Segment IT and OT networks with an industrial demilitarized zone (IDMZ) » Consider a threat monitoring system to detect incidents, alert security teams and provide data collection for root cause analysis and reporting » Deploy an endpoint management system to effectively address vulnerabilities » Adopt tools such as antivirus, firewalls, data encryption and remote access control per your organization’s unique needs and requirements » Constantly authenticate devices, connections and users by deployingZero Trust access control policies » Apply Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) Security to help protect endpoints against communication attacks » Implement backup for critical OT systems to recover quickly from incidents For more tactical information on how to defend in-depth, review resources such as the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, CISA’s website and CIS Critical Security Controls

6. Gain stakeholder buy-in As regulatory scrutiny rises, so too does pressure on boards of directors to better manage cybersecurity risks. Gaining buy-in from key stakeholders across your organization (plant floor to the top-floor) helps you build a strong foundation of trust, which will better support your efforts to fund and implement key security initiatives to help protect operations.
