IT’S A TOOL TO RETAIN TALENT A new survey shows company-supplied workwear is a big plus with employees.

Supplying high-quality uniforms through a professionally managed program delivers immediate benefits for both employees and employers. Uniforms not only help teams look professional and stay safe on the job — they also foster loyalty, pride, and a sense of value among employees. Recent survey results show that workwear programs have a measurable impact on retention and preparedness, making them a strategic advantage for companies committed to supporting their workforce.

According to the survey, 51% of workers receive uniforms and work clothing that is either supplied by their employer, rented for them or paid for by a stipend or reimbursement. A total of 43% of workers said they purchased work clothing with their own money and are not reimbursed. The rest receive a partial reimbursement or stipend to purchase workwear, or work clothing is provided as a gift or a reward by their employer.

Not surprising: employees say safety, durability and comfort are the most important attributes of quality workwear. This latest survey suggests that investing in uniform programs could be a crucial factor for companies to improve their retention and recruitment efforts.

As we step into 2026, manufacturing finds itself in a familiar position— operating in the middle of uncertainty, complexity, and rapid change—yet continuing to move forward with purpose.

The past few years have reminded us that global manufacturing is no longer shaped by a single force. It’s influenced by geopolitics, shifting supply chains, regional conflicts, energy transitions, workforce realities, and the accelerating pace of digital transformation. From elections and trade realignments to climate-driven disruptions and advances in automation, the variables keep multiplying. And still, manufacturing adapts.

What’s striking as we enter this new year is not just how resilient the industry has become, but how intentional that resilience now looks. Manufacturers aren’t simply reacting anymore—they’re building systems, strategies, and cultures designed to absorb change and keep producing.

WireSense Expands Capabilities for Robotic Welding Accuracy Fronius has expanded the capabilities of its WireSense robotic welding assistance system, enabling manufacturers to further reduce rework and scrap caused by component position deviations. WireSense uses the welding wire itself as a sensor, performing contact-based measurements through a brief short circuit—without welding—to detect edges and joints before the weld is made. lanned shutdowns are a routine part of manufacturing operations across automotive, aerospace, tube and pipe, and general metal cutting environments. While production pauses may be expected, metalworking fluids often face their most significant stress during these periods of inactivity.

When circulation stops for days or weeks, fluid systems are exposed to conditions that can compromise performance and reliability, including stagnant flow, temperature swings, evaporative losses, rising tramp oil, and increased risk of microbial growth.

If these risks are left unmanaged, the cost is often realized at restart.

Corrosion, foul odors, biological contamination, degraded part quality, tooling damage, or even complete system dumps can turn a planned shutdown into an unplanned operational setback. Understanding what happens inside a metalworking fluid during downtime—and how to prepare for it—allows manufacturers to protect system integrity and resume production smoothly.

Why Shutdowns Create Unique Risks for Metalworking Fluids Under normal operation, watermiscible metalworking fluids benefit from continuous filtration, aeration, skimming, and replenishment.

Preparing Fluid Systems Before Shutdown Effective shutdown preparation begins with verifying that the fluid is chemically stable enough to remain healthy without circulation. While refractometer readings provide concentration estimates, they do not reflect buffering capacity. Total alkalinity testing through a qualified laboratory offers a clearer picture of a fluid’s resistance to pH drift and microbial activity. Laboratory results allow fluid suppliers to recommend concentration targets, treatment

timing, and corrective actions before downtime begins.

Biological screening is equally important. Low-level bacterial or fungal presence can expand rapidly once agitation stops. Dip-slide testing provides early insight into microbial activity and enables intervention before populations grow out of control. If treatment is required, sequencing matters. Tank-side biocides must be added only when pH is within the proper operational range to avoid destabilizing the emulsion or triggering odor events.

ea Box, Inc. has spent four decades redefining what a shipping container can become. From mobile hospitals and emergency housing units to nuclearmaterials testing labs and even a fully wrapped 40-foot hot dog stand, the company has built its reputation on bespoke design and rapid engineering creativity. But as demand increased—and customization expanded far beyond the constraints of a standard steel box—Sea Box faced a growing operational challenge: how to manage, track, and connect the enormous volume of engineering, production, and inventory data required to deliver these complex projects.

Their journey toward a fully integrated digital ecosystem— connecting PLM, ERP, CAD, and production—highlights both the hurdles and the transformative gains

From Global Logistics Icon to Custom Engineering Platform Standardized shipping containers revolutionized world trade beginning in the 1950s, when Malcolm McLean introduced the first container ship in New Jersey. Today, an estimated 65 million containers are in circulation worldwide. But beyond logistics, containers have become modular, rapidly deployable structures for medical, military, educational, and civilian applications.

This is the niche Sea Box embraced when it launched in 1983—also in New Jersey. Founder Jim Brennan Jr., a designer with

During the pandemic era, demand surged for adaptable container-based systems. Sea Box’s custom work today includes Defense Department supply containers, mobile labs, emergency housing, and specialized commercial units. To support military requirements in particular, the company launched a highly automated container manufacturing line in 2024.

As the business expanded, so did the need for a more sophisticated digital infrastructure.

Engineering Creativity at Scale The company’s appeal has long been its hands-on engineering culture. Project manager John Salyers describes Sea Box as a place where creativity meets real-world results: “You start with a list of requirements, turn that into a design, and follow it all the way through production.

The satisfaction is watching something you created get loaded onto a truck.”

The interior was straightforward: a commercial kitchen.

The exterior, however, required a massive, full-wrap checkerboard pattern.

“I had to create an engineering drawing just for the paint layout,” Greene says. “It was a wild ride.”

These projects underscored the same reality: the more custom Sea Box became, the more critical accurate, accessible, and integrated data became.

A PLM System Built to Replace Chaos When Salyers joined Sea Box in 2018, the company was still using an engineering part-number (EPN) database built in Microsoft Access. Under growing demand, it crashed frequently.

“It was a very paper-based tradition that worked once upon a time,” Greene notes. “But those days were gone.”

Management committed to a full PLM implementation but struggled for years with an initial integration partner.

The system wasn’t stabilizing, and progress slowed.

Recognizing the need for seasoned guidance, Sea Box brought in Razorleaf.

Razorleaf conducted a detailed discovery session and recommended transitioning to the Aras Innovator PLM platform. Importantly, they distinguished which issues

were true PLM complexities and which had simpler solutions— something the Sea Box team greatly appreciated.

Cleaning Up Years of Data the Right Way With thousands of custom jobs behind them, Sea Box’s database suffered from inconsistent naming, duplicate entries, and “poor data-entry etiquette,” as the engineers put it.

“You need good, clean data in your PLM system,” Greene emphasizes. “And when you want to send that data to Business Central—our ERP system—it has to be clean there, too.”

As digital maturity increased, Sea Box expanded from 25 to 40 PLM licenses. Training waves rolled out across departments, and the transition to the fully implemented Aras environment is expected to be complete by the end of 2025.

The Missing Piece: CAD Integration Despite meaningful PLM progress, one major issue remained—CAD files living outside the PLM system.

This created serious operational inefficiencies: » Engineers often had to redraw parts from scratch because CAD could not be found or matched to part numbers. » Revision control was inconsistent. » Engineering changes sometimes propagated incorrectly—or not at all. » Human error increased due to manual cross-referencing.

“It could happen ten or twenty times,” Greene recalls. “It was faster to redraw a part than to find it.”
