Precision Laser Welding: Galvo Scan Heads Accelerate Manufacturing
P
recision laser welding demands rapid and accurate laser beam positioning. When paired with fiber lasers, galvo scan heads can significantly reduce point-to-point positioning times, potentially shaving seconds off cycle times for parts requiring multiple weld locations. These systems are particularly well-suited for welding within field sizes up to 100 x 100 millimeters (mm), making them an excellent choice for applications such as small medical devices, battery packs, and electrical interconnections. This article will explore the application of 2D galvo scan heads in laser micro welding processes. AMADA WELD TECH Inc. has been at the forefront of this technology, developing and integrating galvo solutions for a range of industries. The hardware used to deliver a laser beam from the source to the workpiece is critical for performance. This includes components such as mirrors, shutters, collimators, fibers,
and focus heads. There are three primary laser beam delivery options: Fixed focus heads are typically mounted to a fixed vertical Z-stage, with parts moved to set points where the laser is fired. While offering excellent positioning capability, this method can be relatively slow due to the mass of the stages, tooling, and parts. Wobble/weave focus heads, also usually mounted to a vertical Z-stage, introduce a small oscillation that "wobbles" the beam back and forth in a defined pattern. This wobble helps increase the size of the melt pool and join parts with lower manufacturing tolerances. As with fixed focus heads, parts are moved to set points for welding. Galvo scan heads utilize two mirrors to direct the laser beam through an f-theta lens, focusing it within an XY area. The galvo scanning head is typically mounted on a programmable Z stage to adjust the working height and maintain focus.

The beam can be steered to any location within the field, typically around 100 mm x 100 mm for micro welding applications. Because the position in the XY field is related to a small motion of the mirrors, a 25 mm move takes just a few milliseconds to advance, settle, and be ready for welding. The primary advantage of a galvo scan head over a fixed head lies in its speed and agility. A fixed head requires high-precision motion stages to move the part and tooling under the head, which can be slow due to the mass involved. In contrast, the two mirrors in the galvo scan head are lightweight and can be moved quickly with minimal mass. A small rotation of the mirror translates to a large

linear movement. The time needed for a galvo beam to move from one corner to the next in a 100 mm x 100 mm field can be measured in milliseconds, compared to the potentially much longer time required for fixed focus heads. Galvo scan heads consist of two mirrors, each mounted on small rotary motors called galvanometers, or "galvos." These galvos are mounted orthogonally, translating the rotary motion of the mirrors into linear motion in the X- and Y-axes. The small size of the motors enables high-speed positioning, short settling times, and high acceleration/deceleration, making them ideal for high-speed, short-distance motion.

The Suprarex PRO incorporates a suite of safety features designed to reduce risk and ensure compliance with the EC Machinery Directive. The safety package includes light curtains and safety bumpers that provide a complete envelope of protection. A safe mode limits the speed to less than 2 m/minute (6.6 ft./minute) when the light curtain is interrupted, facilitating tasks such as slag removal during oxy-fuel cutting. The machine also features a new X-axis drive disengage mechanism with a cam-lock design for easier service and reduced downtime.
