Despite being the world’s second largest HVAC company, McQuay International’s Applied Air System division was facing a year-round problem. Within the 120,000 sq. ft.

Faribault, Minn. facility, trapped heat at the ceiling was leaving employees exceptionally cold during the winter and also lead to extremely high heating bills. During the summer, over 100 ineffective box fans littered the floors, consuming 280,000 kWh of energy and costing $19,500 per year to operate.

McQuay needed a cost-effective air movement solution, so they turned to Big Ass Fans. Twelve, 24-ft diameter Big Ass Fans have replaced all of the small box fans and move massive amounts of air to keep people cooler and more productive in the summer. The fans consume a mere 146,000 kWh annually, and have reduced electricity costs by $9,500. By running the fans at a slower speed, without creating a draft in the winter, the facility is now effectively destratified saving McQuay over $58,000 in heating costs – overall McQuay realized a 2 YEAR PAYBACK! Industrial-grade large diameter ceiling fans spun into existence a decade ago, offering an energy-efficient, cost-saving method for circulating massive amounts of air within all types of manufacturing and distribution facilities. Appreciating the delicate balance between facility temperature and worker productivity, Jim Douda, facility engineer, recognized the value in promoting a comfortable working environment that also addressed energy-efficiency. According to Christian Taber, senior applications engineer and LEED accredited professional for Big Ass Fans, “Using large circulator fans as the first stage of cooling or only method of cooling occupants provides an opportunity for significant energy savings.”

By design, traditional HVAC systems consume a lot of energy, regardless of their efficiency rating. As a way to enhance ventilation effectiveness, 6- to 24-ft large diameter, low speed fans have proven to be an effective method to help circulate the air, lessening the load on ventilation and HVAC systems. Whereas ventilation systems do a good job of supplying air to a facility, as was the case for McQuay, fans are needed to circulate the air throughout the space, improving occupant thermal comfort. Summer cooling is enhanced by offering an
