Welcome to another edition of Industrial Machinery Digest’s Quarterly edition. Quarter three of 2019 is shaping up to be a pivotal time of the year for many manufacturers. According to the 2019 Equipment Leasing and Finance U.S. Economic Outlook, while there may be small gains in expansion, the solid growth we have seen over the last two years will continue to slow down. Quarter 3 projections are expected to see 3.9 percent growth in companies making investments in equipment and technology.

Additionally, AMT’s USMTO report also indicates contraction across the industry. While July outpaced June by 11.7 percent in terms of manufacturing technology orders, machine shops did decrease orders over the previous quarter and previous years. The University of Michigan Index of Consumer Sentiment fell to 89.8 in August, according to the USMTO report, with consumers pointing to the negative impact of tariffs that we are facing.

What does this mean in the long run? Simply put, the state of the manufacturing sector, while down, still isn’t terrible. The automotive and defense sectors remain positive the most positive. The USMTO report also indicates that a third more of manufacturing technology orders came from small-to-medium job shops. Many larger manufacturers are turning to out-sourcing to smaller operations to meet deadlines and demands.

Looking for an investment opportunity after retiring from Koch Industries, Mark Soucie purchased Ferroloy, Inc., an iron foundry manufacturing ductile iron castings and gray iron castings based in Wichita, Kansas. Overly-reliant on supplying equipment for the agricultural machinery industry, Soucie has taken to the struggling business from the brink of bankruptcy to profitability and expansion since acquiring the company in 2017. In this edition of Talking Shop, Soucie discusses the challenges the company faced and what steps he is taking to put Ferroloy on a path to success.

What is the history of Ferroloy?

Ferroloy Foundry was started in 1950 and for the first 50 years of its operation was captive to a company called Easton Corporation. We moved to our current location in 1968. In 2001, The Easton Corporation shut down and Ferroloy Foundry, Inc. turned its focus toward becoming a supplier to the agricultural equipment industry.

Why did you decide to purchase the company?

I had been with Koch Industries for the last 19 years and was a CFO, controller, treasurer there for the various businesses. I got to the point where I wanted to own my business. I came across this opportunity and decided to look into it a little further.

When I decided to leave Koch I originally intended to invest in several small businesses. What I wanted to do is buy a few small businesses that I could earn a nominal salary and earn profit from value I created through an equity investment.

What were some of the challenges Ferroloy faced when you took over ownership and what changes did you implement to address them?

When I came across this company in January 2017 and they were in financial trouble and near bankruptcy. I made an immediate investment in it and bridged them through a difficult time. Then the owner of the business, Paul Kolbeck, passed away in February 2017, so I ended up buying it from the estate in August

of that year. Part of that process was renegotiating the debt with the bank.

Basically, we were over-reliant on ag machinery, but I felt that the company had an opportunity to diversify and grow. I just felt like we had a good opportunity, a good team, and that I could diversify the company. I had a pretty good idea there were opportunities in other industries and so the first step in the process was hiring a salesperson that had a lot of experience in the industry.

I hired our first salesperson in August 2017 (John Rockey, Vice President of Sales) which made an immediate impact and we began to diversify the business right away.

Over the last two years, we've gone from being 94-percent reliant on ag machinery to right at 75 percent and we're currently growing the business.

What sectors is Ferroloy pursuing and how will that affect the company’s history as an ag machinery supplier?

Our agriculture customers are very important to us, so we're not by any means abandoning that market. We're in Wichita Kansas, so there are several ag equipment OEMs within 90 miles of us that we have worked with for years and will continue to work with. Even though the percentage of our reliance on ag equipment has decreased, we have actually increased our ag equipment business as we’ve experienced growth.

As far expansion goes, the biggest areas has been valves and pumps, some oil and gas, and just general industry. We're kind of in the back yard of the oil business, with refineries within 45 miles of Wichita. We do have oil and gas fields here, but we’re also only five-and-a-half hours from Dallas, so we have some good opportunities to expand our presence in the energy sector as well. The other thing that's happened is other foundries in our area have shut down, so the industry sector has tightened up.

We’ve been able to take advantage of the contracting of the market in our area.

How have the changes you’ve made impacted your current workforce and what are your expectations for future workforce growth and development?

Since I purchased in 2017, we have almost doubled our workforce. We have hired two salespeople and one part-time employee in accounting, but the rest of our hires are all on the production side. Our growth has really been the result of increasing our brand recognition and the efforts of our sales team over the last two years.

I believe hiring is going to become more and more of a challenge for us in the future because it's tough work and it requires a strong work ethic. I’m not sure our current generation of Americans is interested in this type of work.

We'll invest in automation as automation makes sense for us. We do have CNC grinding, milling and lathe machines and our mold machines are automatic. I do think robotics will play a role in our business

niche at some point, but the costs are going to have to come down before we make that investment.

How are federal tax cuts and other economic policies coming out of Washington D.C. positively and/or negatively affecting Ferroloy?

We're kind of old-guard industry, so, in my opinion, if our political leaders want to continue to have a strong manufacturing base they're going to have to make it economical to do it. They can make it un-economical through new taxes or punitive regulations. Many

people, think of us as a dirty industry, but we don't produce VEOC emissions, and we're technically a recycler. We take scrap iron and melt it down and reuse it in new applications, so we are front-andcenter a recycler. We do consume a lot of electricity, but we pay our people well and we have great benefits for our employees.

My intent is to reinvest in the business. We now have a positive cash flow and we’re putting money back into the business. I think there is an opportunity for the business to be very profitable, but, as you know, things can happen in Washington that just yank you around. In our industry, consistency is vital.

Many clients don’t know that there are options when it comes to warehouse automation and not all options cost tens of millions of dollars to deploy and take years to see a return on the investment.

Our mission at 6 River Systems is to make fulfillment faster with innovative products that generate immediate and lasting value for our customers. Starting with Chuck, a collaborative mobile robot, 6 River Systems is building fulfillment solutions that power the winning warehouses of the future.

In brief, what is your history with the company?

I joined 6 River Systems as vice president of marketing, and our first marketing hire, in early 2018. Over the past year we’ve focused our efforts on branding, awareness and engagement and have recently been acknowledged by a leading analyst as a “Leader” in the area of fulfillment robots.

How has your company changed through the years?

In 2011 Rylan Hamilton and Jerome Dubois met at Kiva Systems. Fast forward to 2015, Rylan is running Solutions at Amazon Robotics and Jerome is running strategic initiatives within Amazon's Seller Services organization. During this time Chris Cacioppo was building interactive hardware and software solutions.

The team started working out of Jerome’s kitchen in 2015. We built most of our first robot over the course of a few months in that very room. We did our first deployment in 2017 and now coming towards the middle of 2019 our robot Chuck is in 30 warehouses across North America and Europe fulfilling over one million items per week.

What critical issues do your clients rarely know they have or might encounter?

In what ways can you help your customers overcome today’s manufacturing challenges?

Demands on manufacturing companies are growing exponentially, especially in the warehouse and manufacturing floor. Yet finding and retaining quality personnel is getting more difficult, and seasonal hires take time to train; especially if you’re trying to leverage automation technologies.

All these factors are causing chaos on the fulfillment center and manufacturing floor as ill-equipped associates try to fulfill more orders, more quickly, to meet increasing customer expectations for faster delivery times.

Repair, Rebuild, Remanufacture or New Equipment When Considering Options To Increase Capacity

W

hen forging operations need to expand production to meet increased demand for existing parts or to add new product lines, selecting from the available options to bring new equipment online can be challenging. Ultimately, the decision involves striking a delicate balance between fitting within budget constraints and accepting what can often be very long lead times.

Forging machines, by design, are massive pieces of equipment that weigh between 25 and 300 tons and rise 10 to 25 feet above the production floor. Despite the violent nature of the forging process, the equipment is designed and built to last decades and it is not uncommon to find equipment from 50 or more years ago still in use.

Unfortunately, this can be both a blessing and a curse when it comes to purchasing new equipment. The sheer size and complexity of the machine means that even items such as the massive cast steel frame can take 6 to 8 months for delivery – not including the 4 to 6 months to install all the internal parts and componentry.

Given the longevity of the equipment, the other option is to purchase used forging equipment and have it rebuilt or remanufactured. This can speed delivery by as much as 6 months and reduces the impact on the budget, but the dwindling worldwide supply of used equipment is increasingly taking this option off the table.

The only other alternative is to simply repair out-of-commission units and/or to squeeze additional production by incorporating more automation in existing forging equipment.

Regardless of the choice, one thing is clear: those in the industry are taking a closer look at each of the four options available – repair, rebuild, remanufacture or new – as well as each option’s advantages and challenges.

Repair The most immediate option to bring forging equipment online is simply to repair existing equipment or out-of-commission units. This

often comes down to locating adequate replacement parts, which can be quite difficult.

The tremendous longevity of horizontal and vertical forging equipment can create unique challenges for a forging operation when a part they need to replace was built decades ago. Is the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) still in business? Does a drawing of the part still exist? Can a local machine shop replicate it?

“Sourcing spare parts can be an ongoing problem,” says Wade Ferguson, maintenance manager at Modern Forge Companies, LLC, a hot steel forging company in Blue Island, Illinois that operates five manufacturing facilities with over 25 production forge units. “We probably run hammers tighter than what would ever be specified.

And together with our high volume of forging, at times we are scrambling to make or find spare parts.”

To produce engine valves and other motorcycle parts for customer like Harley Davidson, Modern Forge uses Chambersburg (CECO) die forgers that date back to the 1980’s and weigh between 20 and 50 tons.

So, when Ferguson heard that Chambersburg was in bankruptcy many years ago, his first reaction was “what the heck are we going to do for parts?” Fortunately, he had some replacement parts in inventory and was able to salvage parts from two offline units. Like other forging operations, he also sent some parts out to be reverseengineered and machined.

This comes with some unintended risk, however. Machine shops often do not have access to critical specifications about high wear parts including the material grade of the steel, the heat-treating process utilized and tolerances that all were engineered specifically for that piece of equipment. The result can be parts that fail prematurely or wear much faster.

So, when Ferguson learned that the Park-Ohio Company had acquired the intellectual property rights to all Chambersburg and Ajax Manufacturing equipment in 2005, he contacted them.

Ajax-CECO, as the company is now known, is one of the oldest manufacturers of forging equipment, having begun operations in 1875. In its more than 140 years of history, the company has built

and put into production more than 6,000 horizontal and vertical units of forging equipment.

Fortunately, the provenance of forging equipment for both Ajax and Chambersburg equipment has been well maintained, including the original drawings, bill of materials and service manuals.

“They have very good, detailed information that Ajax-CECO carried over from Chambersburg, which is really advantageous for us,” says Ferguson.

Most OEMs today also stock replacement parts using MRP systems that monitor inventory levels and track historical trends for common wear items such as friction plates, driving plates, piston heads, piston rods, rings and packings.

In addition, some OEMs like Ajax-CECO offer stocking programs for long lead time items such as main gears, centric shafts, rams, frames and anvils that most customers will not stock due to the cost.

In this type of program, the part is held in inventory for the customer.

The customer pays a percentage of the cost and then the balance when they take possession of the part – even if years later.

“Ajax-CECO is good about putting a spare part on the shelf for me and not charging [the full price] for it,” says Ferguson. “It is in their inventory until we need it, and then we pay the balance. I’m talking about expensive parts too.”

Rebuild A step up in order of magnitude from a repair is a rebuild of the forging equipment. In a rebuild, all high wear items such as bearings, bushings, seals and liners are replaced to get the machine in good working condition. The frame is inspected and repaired, if necessary.

Given the extent of the work involved, however, this approach represents a significant investment in time. Rebuilds can take six months, depending on the number of components involved in the project. While this is a significant amount of time, a rebuild can save an operator six months or more in comparison to purchasing new equipment. This approach also reduces the overall cost to bring the equipment online.

Rebuilds can be approached several different ways. The forging equipment can be sent to the OEM for rebuilding; the OEM can send repair personnel to the manufacturer’s facility to rebuild equipment on-site; or the OEM can supervise a rebuild by maintenance staff.

This allows the in-house staff to ask questions and better understand the operation of the equipment they are maintaining.

At the Eaton Corporation forging operation in Kearney, Nebraska, the company operates 26 Ajax-CECO 100 to 1300-ton forging presses. Eaton remains one of the top producers of engine valves and precision gears in North America.

Although some Eaton plants purchase rebuilt equipment from companies like Ajax-CECO, the lead maintenance manager at Eaton, Randy Kreutzer, sees the value in rebuilding the equipment in house with components sourced from the OEM. “I like the experience the maintenance staff gets from rebuilding the equipment. That way, when future repairs are required, the time frame to complete them is much shorter,” says Kreutzer.

In addition, Eaton often incorporates automation upgrades that speed production in rebuilt equipment. Today, many of these manual tasks are instead being replaced with the mechanical “hand” of a robot or by integrating servos that can lift, insert and deposit materials. Even tasks such as automated tooling changes can be completed with the push of a button.

By doing so, tasks that were once performed manually – such as moving heavy steel rods, pipe and other stock in and out of equipment - are now automated to improve worker safety. Not only does this create a safer environment for forging operators, but productivity is increased.

Remanufacture Sometimes only the cast steel frame of the forging equipment is salvageable, in which case all the internal components can be replaced in a full remanufacture of the equipment. Given the extent of the work required, a remanufactured forging unit can still cost 85-90% of new equipment, but delivery time is reduced by about 6 months. However, when it is finished a remanufactured machine comes with a New Machine Warranty.

In essence, a remanufacture saves the cost and the time of acquiring a new cast frame. The frame on a 3-inch upsetter press weighing 55,000 pounds, for example, could take 6 months plus another month for shipping from overseas.

“With a remanufacture, all the internal parts are built to factory specs,” says Kreutzer. “With a remanufactured unit, you don’t need the man-hours to rebuild it. It can just be set in place, hooked up and is ready for forging.

As with a rebuild, a remanufactured forging unit can include a variety of automation option upgrades.

However, if the new equipment option is affordable, the decades of value that will be generated from the new equipment means the return on investment will be significant.

When it comes to new forging presses, Kreutzer cautions that quality can sometimes be an issue when sourcing from overseas sources. “We like Ajax-CECO presses for their quality, and even prefer to rebuild that equipment instead of pursuing some other options out there that will not perform or last as long,” says Kreutzer.

New equipment also gives forgers the opportunity to take advantage of the most advanced automation options available today.

For example, entire forging line “cells” can be created that include sophisticated communications that report production rates and machine performance back to company networks.

Consider Your Options Some operations even hedge their bets by utilizing more than one strategy. Given the shortage of available used equipment and the lead times, some customers order a new machine while another is being remanufactured. Others get quotes on new equipment while continuing to seek out used equipment opportunities as they arise.

Regardless of the approach, manufacturers have a lot to consider when attempting to meet increasing production demands. Whether repair, rebuild, remanufacture or new, bringing forging equipment online requires careful consideration and foresight, as well as a more complete understanding of the options.

“You have to constantly keep a look-out for equipment, worldwide, and do your price comparisons to ensure you stay within the budget,” says Kreutzer. “Usually when we are acquiring in new equipment, it is well into the future so we have adequate time. But there are always timelines that must be met. So, as a company we have to consider all the available options.”

Buying New While the ‘buy new’ option may offer a forging operator the most confidence in long-term performance and the most tailored solution to their forging needs, it also has the longest lead times. Moreover, a manufacturer will need to plan on approximately one year to take delivery of a new piece of forging equipment.

he United States is undergoing a dramatic demographic transformation. According to research by the U.S. Census Bureau, one in five Americans will be 65 or older by 2030.

By 2035, retirement-age Americans will outnumber those under 18. Mark Howard, North America country manager of industrial parts supplier, EU Automation, explores what this means for the manufacturing skills shortage.

Generating around 12.75 million jobs, and producing 18.2 per cent of the world’s goods, US manufacturing is colossal. What’s more, according to the National Association of Manufacturers, every dollar spent in manufacturing adds $1.89 in business growth in other supporting sectors, such as retailing, transportation and business.

Yet, 89 per cent of manufacturers currently have unfilled vacancies. Why? They can’t find qualified applicants, according to a Deloitte 2018 report. The well-publicized skills gap in manufacturing could leave 2.4 million jobs vacant between 2018-2028 and could cost the industry $454 billion by 2028 — an alarming statistic.

Baby boomers, people born between 1946-1964, are retiring from all sectors at a rate of 10,000 per day. Unfortunately, the number of American youths with sufficient STEM education for manufacturing is inadequate for making up these numbers.

To make things worse, the manufacturing workforce is already older than the overall US labor force. According to a report conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management, more than a quarter of manufacturing workers over the age of 55 and 61 per cent of organizations indicate their organizations capitalize on and incorporate the experience of older workers to a great extent.

Thankfully, there are some indications that manufacturing firms are among the “early adopters” of strategies to assess how their worker demographics are aging and change their practices.

However, more must be done if they are to help their organizations thrive in the long term.

The situation is only worsened by the limited supply of STEM-educated students preparing to join the manufacturing sector.

According to the 2015 OECD Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) test, when competing against other nations, American 15-year-olds ranked at 31 out of 35 in math and 35 out of 72 in science. As a nation, we aren’t thriving at STEM. It’s no secret that the manufacturing industry struggles to attract younger workers. This stems from a number of sources; younger people’s perceptions that manufacturing work is dangerous or behind the times; a declining emphasis on vocational education and apprenticeships, and a geographic mismatch between younger talent — who often prefer to live near cities — and manufacturing offices and factories that are usually found outside urban centers.

Even if automation is deployed in factories, this training will still allow for younger employees to learn the intricate operations of a site — from the staff that have manned it for years.

The manufacturing sector must adapt to avoid a serious skills crisis.

Thankfully, widespread concern about labor shortages associated with the impending retirement wave is inspiring firms to make change — whether that be through greater integration of automation, improved training schemes or perhaps a mixture of both.

How can we alleviate this crisis?

Industrial technology, such as automation, robotics and software, is being widely adopted to automate the processes of manufacturers.

To some extent, a greater deployment of automation could alleviate the impact of the nation’s growing skills crisis.

For example, through the installation of a SCARA robot for pick-and-place applications, a manufacturer could feasibly reduce the number of human operators required on the production line.

What’s more, as industrial automation parts and spares become more accessible and less expensive, automating becomes an even more budget-friendly option.

However, deploying automation doesn’t entirely eliminate the need for human workers. Another method would be greater training for existing staff. Merging the two age groups in a manufacturing capacity would benefit all parties, due to the transfer of both technical knowledge and soft skills. Implementing phased retirement plans and flexible working practices, for instance, would encourage the company’s most valued older workers to delay retirement. This

enishaw, worked with engine manufacturing company Cobra Aero, based in Michigan, USA, to optimize its design processes for aircraft and motorcycle engines. After working with Renishaw to develop new manufacturing processes, Cobra Aero invested in the AM 400 system to increase its additive manufacturing (AM) capabilities. Cobra Aero worked with Renishaw to gain expertise in AM. The company visited a Renishaw Additive Manufacturing Solutions Centre, USA, and collaborated with Renishaw engineers to use AM to improve the design of a cylinder for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Using AM technology allowed Cobra Aero to design a lattice structure to increase airflow, it also allowed them to produce one solid, lightweight part.

“Staying at the cutting edge of manufacturing is important to Cobra Aero,” explained Sean Hilbert, President of Cobra Aero. “Investing in AM allows us to develop tools and new products for high value, small volume applications, speed up the manufacturing process and produce designs that would not be possible using conventional subtractive machining.”

“We decided to redesign the cylinder because of its importance in an engine,” continued Hilbert.

“Design changes to this part of the engine must happen rapidly and it is also a high value part, which is why we have chosen to additively manufacture this component. Improving

the performance of the cylinder will also improve the overall performance of the engine.”

“By using metal additive manufacturing, Cobra Aero was able to design a part that was unique to the application,” explained Stephen Anderson, AM Business Development Manager at Renishaw Inc. “By using our laser powder bed fusion technology, Cobra Aero was able to produce a single part with complex lattice structures that performs better than conventional component manufacturing techniques.”

Additive Manufacturing Cuts Lead Times Renishaw has supplied four RenAM 500Q metal additive manufacturing machines to Knust-Godwin, a precision machining company located in Katy, Texas. The high-productivity machine, designed for serialised industrial manufacturing, has enabled KnustGodwin to drastically reduce lead times for its customers.

AM technology brings a number of benefits to the oil and gas industry, for example by producing components for down hole measurement while drilling and logging while drilling, which offer more efficient flow. This increases efficiency of tool rates and leads to longer tool life. How Small Shops Can Start The March Towards Digitalization By: Ramona Schindler, General Manager Machine Tool Systems, Siemens Switzerland

R

ecently I was asked what smaller shops, mold-makers and tool-makers can do to begin their march towards digitalization. I think the first thing is trying to get knowledge.

It may seem old-fashioned, but one very important first step is reading the trade magazines. They demonstrate much of the emerging technology, often with real-world examples of shop-floors who are actually implementing it. Then, dedicate one person at your shop to learn about digitalization. It should be someone in your organization who has an open mindset and will get knowledge about what digitalization means for your operation, because digitalization is so broad. It’s about connectivity, it’s about data gathering and it’s surely about the analysis of that data to develop a smart action plan.

There are so many buzzwords and acronyms such as OEE, big data, Industry 4.0 and MTBF, as well as our own company’s

concept of digitalization. You need to make yourself comfortable with these ideas from the beginning, so you know a little bit about what direction you want to go in. Talk to people inside and outside of your organization, listen to podcasts, and go to tradeshows, conferences and events.

Most shops, even the smallest ones, have obviously been gathering data and logging it in a production-schedule format of some kind for many years. Therefore, digitalization, with the focus on data, is not an entirely new approach to machine tool utilization and the process of evaluating the overall performance of your shop.

It’s about making this process as easy and fail-proof as possible.

Then, the second step is to find a partner you can work with — someone who will support you throughout the entire process, from an initial evaluation to implementation and the new protocols of action required. This could be a small consulting firm or even one

person, who brings an outside perspective into your machine shop.

Be sure it’s someone who knows your industry, because that will reduce your startup time.

There are many kinds of partners out there, including ones with deep experience in mold-making, tool-and-die work or contract manufacturing. then start slowly. Pick one or two focus machines. Don’t think about all your equipment at the beginning. Take one or two focus machines where you want to get data and start tracking it. Talk to all of your machine operators. Get them onboard, so they know what is happening at the shop. It’s so important that it’s not somebody saying they are installing something to improve quality, but that everybody is onboard with the entire conversion process. Make it visible. Get a large display screen for the data you’re gathering. Invest at the beginning. Place the screen in the middle of the shop where everybody can see it, so that everybody can see the data you’re capturing, everybody can look at it and ask why is it red or why is it green? Seems simple, but this is the beginning of a process, where you need to re-focus the mindset of your people.

Let everyone have access to this entire process, so they “buy into it,” as the saying goes. Then you could also get their reactions and they’ll come up with more questions about why is this data or that data not showing on the screen? Why are we not showing it in a prioritized way? Wouldn’t that be more productive? Get everybody onboard with a little investment in visibility at the beginning and you’ll receive great feedback from every level of your organization.

Talk daily about the data. People will ask questions, like “Why aren’t we tracking our daily downtime?”, so ask the operators, because they will have different opinions on what data are being tracked, why a certain value isn’t shown, or why cycle times are varying on the same part on the same machine. By getting their

input, you will be able to work on those together to make the first return on your investment. Seems basic, but this starts the process of using technology to make data more valuable as a tool for improvement in your shop.

So, in four short phrases: inform yourself, get a strong partner — maybe somebody you’re already working with on the shop-floor — ask actively for highly visible data, and then dedicate one person inside your organization who drives the entire process on your behalf. When that person can become a champion for digitalization in your shop, you’ll be on your way.

Communicate the plan to all the people in your shop and talk about what you see as often as possible.

The old Chinese proverb says the journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step. Take it.

Sunnen and ANS collaborate on friction and wear reduction technology Sunnen Products Company and Sweden’s Applied Nano Surfaces (ANS) have entered into a joint market development agreement to advance technology and applications based on the unique Triboconditioning process recently patented by ANS. The process reduces friction and wear on various steel and cast-iron surfaces while improving surface finish, preventing seizures, and enhancing product life.

“ANS is on the leading edge of friction reduction technology,” said Chris Miltenberger, President and CEO of Sunnen Products Company. “We are excited about working with ANS on the development of new products and surface finishing methods which will bring unique solutions to all segments of the manufacturing industry.

Triboconditioning is a combined mechano-chemical surface treatment process which uses a machining procedure to level off surface peaks and apply a friction- and wear-reducing compound to the component surface. Unlike spray coatings, the compound becomes an integrated part of the component structure at a nano level. The process is mechanically simple and, in most cases, can be done with Sunnen precision honing equipment.

It is very cost-efficient in mass production

environments, making it perfect for in-house manufacturing as a part of component manufacturers’ production lines.

Key applications include automotive engine components such as valve train parts, cylinder liners, crankshafts and connecting rods, as well as industrial applications such as hydraulic motors, rock drills, pumps, chains, gears and compressors.

In the third example, an ESAB technician used a cloud-based solution to diagnose faults that occurred when an end-user forgot to put coolant into a water-cooled system.

“Receiving alerts via text and email, such as for a system that suddenly shuts down or operates outside of specifications, are standard features on our suite of services,” says Enlund.
