BATTLE! Friday 17th November 2006 St Johns Primary School, Grantham Road, Bracebridge Heath, Lincoln.

An extraordinary performance featuring music, songs and dance that have been devised and taught as part of an Early Music pilot project for Lincolnshire.

This extraordinary performance is the culmination of a ground breaking Early Music pilot project for Lincolnshire.

Three experienced musicians from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment have worked with over one hundred and thirty children and young people in two hectic weeks of workshops, coaching sessions and a lecture/recital. The musicians, supported by class teachers and soundLINCS music facilitators, have used the historic and dramatic context of Battle Warfare within 15th and 16th century Europe as a starting point for creating original music & musical instruments, costume, song and movement.

Four schools have participated in the project: St. Johns Primary School, Bracebridge Heath “The year 3 children have thoroughly enjoyed learning the dance, particularly developing their sense of rhythm and pulse.” Zoe Cook, Year 3 Class Teacher.

Heighington Millfield Primary School “The BATTLES project has inspired the children at Millfield, in my class I have been inundated with the Terrible Tudors!. The children have gained so much from participating; not only the history, music and dance but also the way in which they have been able to use their imagination and develop their listening, thinking and cooperation skills. The professional musicians leading the project have approached the children in a very mature way and the children have responded superbly.

Washingborough Foundation Primary School “The project has been wonderful, The children particularly enjoyed the trumpet making and playing and have given their parents ear ache whilst decorating them!! I think the real pleasure will come from the performance as they haven't experienced anything like that before.”

The Priory LSST, Lincoln “This is a fabulous opportunity for students at The Priory LSST to explore new music and interact with musicians of great experience, knowledge and ability. Each student has devised their own role in the project and has found opportunities to grow as musicians and as individuals”.

soundLINCS-Lincolnshire Music Development Agency-is providing this pilot project for Lincolnshire in association with the Lincoln Early Music Festival. Detailed discussions over many months with the Festival organisers and Sue Addison (Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment) have created a project that is unique for Lincolnshire. It is hoped that the opportunity to enjoy the Battle! experience will be made available to children and young people throughout the county. soundLINCS is providing Battle! as a Special Genre project within sound52—Lincolnshire Youth Music Action Zone. sound52 is providing music making opportunities for children and young people throughout the county and over 20,000 have participated since the Zone was launched in January 2003. sound52 workshops involve childminders and infants; pre-school children, their parents & carers, and Early Years Practitioners; primary school children; young people within schools and youth centres; children and young people with additional needs; children and young people engaged in Alternative Curriculum educational groups.

Sue, Andrew and David have been supported in the project by class teachers Andy Terry, Kay Ingamells, June Kay, Michelle Barron and Zoe Cook, and three soundLINCS music facilitators Ruth AllenWilliams, Tim Kitson and Tracey Jefferey.



The performance of Battle! is supported by music students from the University of Central England Conservatoire in Birmingham.



St Johns Primary School have substantially supported the project by agreeing to host a pre-project training day and the rehearsals and performance.
