Introduction We design human experiences and make the values and visions of our clients understandable and visible. ​ AteljÊ Sotamaa is an international design and architecture studio founded and directed by brother and sister Kivi Sotamaa and Tuuli Sotamaa.

The studio has realized projects in Finland, Sweden, England, Italy, USA, Japan, China and Kazakhstan Based out of studio in Helsinki we create buildings, spaces, objects, infrastructure and artworks that change the way people think, feel and behave.

We use ingenuity and digital technology to design projects that are unique, affordable and buildable.

We also conduct research exploring the creative relationship of the designed environment and people.

We combine experiential design with criticality and responsibility.

AteljĂŠ Sotamaa is an international design and architecture studio, founded by brother and sister Kivi Sotamaa & Tuuli Sotamaa.

We exist in a web of connections over which ideas and expertise are exchanged and spread, and from which game-changing innovation emerges.

Our work benefits from years of design research conducted at institutions such as the UCLA Architecture & Urban Design, ADD Aalto University Digital Design laboratory, The Ohio State University and the University of Applied Arts Vienna and Ocean North. ​ e are driven by a fascination with sensation, W how people experience design. In order to make experiences seamless the studio designs projects holistically, across scale and media.

We have realized buildings, interiors, exhibition architectures, public sculptures, and products. We have over one hundred different lighting, and furniture in production.

In addition to design work we have curated exhibitions, and organised over 50 international events for cultural institutions, companies, and universities in order to contribute to international design culture, and discourse.

Between the two of us, we have 40 years of experience in complex, high profile, culturally significant projects. We have worked with renown museums, cultural institutions and corporations as well as private clients.

Atmospheric workspaces support innovation and creativity.

'ADD pioneered the idea of a collaborative research platform dedicated to the digital paradigm at the Aalto University. It offered a place of retreat and experimentation for designers, artists, engineers and scientists alike. A space of possibilities, as often recited in mathematics, ADD was made to serve as a point of exchange between the different disciplines, leaving room for both reasoning and intuition as well as concrete and abstract work.'

"Other innovative projects included the recently launched architecture enterprise Atelier House, by brother-sister duo Ateljé Sotamaa. The designers have conjured up the ideal answer to creating dream holiday homes made purely out of wood.

Starting from sketches and then moving to 3D digital models, they allow clients to engage in every step of the design process, with the aim of creating affordable bespoke homes. The project is currently focusing on houses located on islands near Helsinki, with prototype models made of locally and sustainably sourced spruce and birch. Also being furniture designers, Ateljé Sotamaa can even kit out the houses’ interiors. It’s the full package."

The restaurant is located in the historical, protected Sundman’s building from the 1830’s in the heart of Helsinki.

Sensations combined with criticality and responsibility can be used to trigger cultural change.

'Spherical 'cricket lamps' hang above quests as they dine. The insects climb on 3D printed scaffolds and feed via glass inserts that extend outside the circular silhouette. More than an audiovisual spectacle, on-site habitats offer an opportunity for the chefs to test how feeding influences crickets flavor, and act as a starting point for a conversation.'

'Utima is an experiment intended to evolve our relationship to what we eat. Chefs and owners Henri AlĂŠn and Tommi Tuominen are exploring the culinary applications of the circular economy, as well as the most innovative food and farming technologies today. 'We had the rare opportunity to design the architecture and curate the exhibition for the Finnish Pavilion at the 2017 World Expo in Astana. We won the gold medal in our category on September 10. We’ve had close to 300 000 visitors, which exceeded the expected number by 100 000 visitors and the pavilion was selected when foreign journalists named the best pavilions EXPO'.

Holistic design creates seamless experiences.

The holistically designed Finnjävel restaurant proved that bold investment in design can help make a business succesful. Finnjävel became a highly profitable fine dining restaurant and a culinary phenomenon in Finland. It was awarded the Culinary Culture Award by the Elo Foundation.

'In this manner, Finnjävel foregrounded the importance of embodied experience, the fact that architecture must be physically experienced. The merging of food, design, architecture, narrative, and music created a mood and a physical, multisensorial experience. The Finnjävel experience was not about just drinking and eating; it was about an embracing aesthetics - and about the chefs, sommeliers and waiters preparing the service from their hearts. The restaurant as a whole, its immaterial as well as material and human aspects, revolved around the experience of the guests.'

'The unique and inventive decor of the restaurant has been created by Ateljé Sotamaa’s awarded designers, Kivi and Tuuli Sotamaa.
