s~n} Swan
Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton
My 13- (almost 14)-year-old daughter, Wendy, reminded me recently that August 6 is actually only the midpoint of summer. That seems so strange. To me, August is the “winding down” of summertime. In my house, we’re gearing up to go back to school. We’re shopping for backpacks, school supplies and tennis shoes. We’re heading to sports practices and having the final pool parties. And this year, we’re surfing the college scene for my soon-to-be high school senior (yikes!). To me, August means that summer is singing its swan song. In this issue of St. Louis Homes and Lifestyles, we celebrate these final days of a beautiful and joyful summer as we sneak a peak into the amazing homes of special people who live life to the fullest — inside and out. Our Urban feature (page 34) is a modern masterpiece in our city’s evergrowing Midtown Alley. This high-rise haven is home to a bachelor who has modeled his personal spaces after some of the best modern hotels in the world, creating a luxurious yet livable rooftop treasure. Town and Country is where we find our enchanting suburban home (page 42) that could just as easily rest on a rolling hillside in the south of France. A realistically rustic yet eclectically decorated European gem, this home will surprise and captivate you with its clever mix of antiques, special finds and gracious gardens. The Outdoor feature this month is a Mexican-inspired pool house and outdoor living oasis (page 48) that captures that south-of-the-border flavor. A lovely couple with 10 kids, three horses, two dogs and some fish have found this backyard getaway the perfect place to “vacation.” Okay, I have to admit that our Spotlight (page 56) is one of my favorites ever. As a mom, I am gushing over the complete cuteness of the miniature art studio and turtle fort we found at a home in Kirkwood. This story has happy childhood memories written all over it. Nostalgic and sweet, this is really what summertime is all about. Of course, we can’t forget that August is also our Baths of the Year issue. Just wait till you see the four outstanding winners this year (page 30). If you’re planning to redo or even just spruce up one of your baths, you’re sure to find some gorgeous inspiration. So, as summer winds down to a glorious close and we get caught up in the “getting ready” for fall, let’s not forget to take a moment and savor what is left of one of the best seasons St. Louis has to offer.

We are all so lucky to live in St. Louis, aren’t we? I think about that a lot — the great shops, fantastic restaurants and top-notch cultural venues, not to mention the diverse neighborhoods and award-winning schools. St. Louis is truly a small town that lives large, and I feel honored and blessed to have roots here. That’s why it’s so important to me that we support our wonderful city and the locally owned businesses that have decided to call St. Louis home. According to a Department of Labor/Bureau of Labor Statistics study done in 2009, if just half of the employed United States population spent only $50 each month at independently owned businesses, their purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue! And for every $100 spent in those local shops, $68 is returned to our community, compared to only $43 that stays here if you support a national chain. Buy online, and nothing comes home. I think that’s pretty good evidence that it pays to shop locally. Personally, I would much prefer to give my hardearned dollar to a valued member of my community Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton anyway. If we support each other, we all win. A few weeks ago, my staff and I attended the annual Hat Luncheon benefiting Forest Park Forever. This iconic event was once again a wonderful success, and we were privileged to be a part of it. Supporting our amazing park is just another way to give back to our city and contribute in even a small way to its growth and progress. As a now locally owned publication, we at SLHL also really appreciate the support and encouragement you have given us as we continually strive to showcase the very best design that can be found only in our great city.

scents
When customers enter this tiny, fragrant shop, they aren’t surprised to see Kate Bethel hard at work on her handmade soaps and bath products. Behind the old-fashioned pedestal sinks and clawfoot tub filled with bar soaps is Kate’s workspace. Measuring cups, a microwave and a tall refrigerator fill the space, but this is no ordinary kitchen. Here, Kate mixes up her handmade, uniquely scented bath products. “It’s a little like cooking,” says Kate. “Most of what we use to make our products are utensils you can find in your own kitchen.” A self-taught soapmaker, Kate first dipped into the soapmaking business by following how-to articles she found online. Convinced that bath products would be difficult to sell, she limited the amount she sold in store and instead focused on home accessories and gifts — until the soaps began to fly off the shelves. “It really started as a hobby,” says Kate. “When I got married, I wanted
22

to make favors for my wedding reception, so I looked up how to make soaps online. Then people started coming to me who wanted soaps for baby showers and other events, and it just took off from there.” And with unique scents like “Don Draper,” “Mojito” and “Little Black Dress,” it’s easy to see why customers keep coming back for these one-of-a-kind, pampering products. Kate and her assistant, Melissa Campbell, come up with most of the fragrances themselves but also draw ideas from polls with friends and family, as well as suggestions from customers. “My Boyfriend’s T-shirt,” a clean linen and cologne scent, leads the way as the store’s most popular fragrance. “It’s kind of a trial-and-error process,” says Kate. “Sometimes we have more than 50 fragrances in the store, and sometimes it’s a lot more or a lot less. If something sounds cool, we give it a try. We’re more like a restaurant or a bakery in that way — we offer today’s special.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Nothing says summer
more than a tropical drink melting down an ice-cold glass. And whether you’re lucky enough to be dipping your toes into a crystal blue ocean or simply lounging poolside at home, having a mouthwatering cocktail in your hand is the perfect way to beat the heat. Sanjiv Gupta, Bar Manager of Cielo at Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis, enjoys concocting captivating poolside potions for his guests. “I love coming up with new cocktails, as it allows me to be creative and interact with my guests,” says Sanjiv. “It’s especially satisfying when I can create something from scratch, and it turns out just the way I intended. Cocktails are no longer just a pre-dinner affair, followed by wine. They have quickly become an integral part of the dining experience.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

slhl TABLE SCAPE
hot, hot,
h~t!
A colorful Mexican-inspired tabletop makes for a spicy, end-of-summer fiesta By Heather Riske Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton
“When I hear the word ,’ I think bright, fun, even noisy. The beauty of the fiesta theme is that it is colorful, fun and not set in stone. There’s room for a lot of mixing and matching.” ‘
fiesta
— Liz Mantych
In Liz Mantych’s dining room, more is definitely more. Her Mexican fiesta-themed celebration brings more color, more flavor and more fun to the table, mixing bright fabrics with south-of-the-border décor to create a feast for the senses. To give her traditional dining room a dash of Mexican flair, Liz first dressed her table with brown burlap. She placed throw rugs in bright green, pink, orange, yellow, purple and blue over the chairs, tying them in place with colorful trimming in contrasting hues. “I didn’t want the traditional feel, and the rugs were fun, bright and made for an easy cover-up,” says Liz. Bright, bold place settings pop against the neutral brown burlap, while maracas, fruits and greenery spread across the room add small punches of color. Cut in half, fresh bell peppers double as festive candleholders, which add a warm glow to the table. In the corner, a mannequin, donning a sombrero, striped serape poncho and chili pepper necklace, stands guard behind the bar, and a bright umbrella strung with lights looms over the edge of the table.
28
At the evening's end, Liz sends fiesta-goers home with peppers, hot sauce, tiny buckets of taco seasoning, and a mini bottle of tequila, which also held their place cards at the table. So, next time the end-of-summer heat calls for a margarita-filled fiesta, remember, it’s the thoughtful details that make the table memorable. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

limestone luxury Quietly tucked behind a small foyer just off the master bedroom, this private master bath exudes sophistication and a rejuvenating sense of solitude. To achieve the subtle, Zen-like ambience, Gegg Design & Cabinetry lightened the space with a rich, creamy limestone for the tub front, floor, countertops and backsplashes. The sweeping curvature of the light walls and tub front softens the room and creates an organic flow between the different design elements. Curved limestone walls also conceal the toilet and shower, adding additional privacy. The tall, vertical glass panels allow soft, natural light to illuminate the shower area. A large window directly above the air massage tub also lightens the room. Chic white light fixtures flank his-andher neutral walnut vanities, which feature a continuous vertical grain pattern in the doors and drawers, adding to the bath’s serene, understated sophistication. Judges’ Comments:
This bathroom packs a ton of detail into the square footage. The long, rectangular windows give the shower a romantic feel that evokes a sense of mystery but is still private. The smooth curves in the walls and bathtub tie everything together, yet they provide contrast against the sharp angles in the ceiling. Photography courtesy of Gegg Design & Cabinetry

textural oasis Before an extraordinary transformation, this master bath was stuck in the 1980s. Dreaming of a more current space that reflected their sophisticated, well-traveled personalities, the homeowners called on RSI Kitchen & Bath to turn their vision into a reality. The focus of the new design became a custom ebony chest of drawers, purchased by the homeowners, which inspired the colors, shapes and textures for the bath. To add interest, split-face stone tile provides a backsplash over custom vanities and wraps around the freestanding air tub. Textures continue to mix throughout the spacious walk-in shower, as smooth Crossville sand tiles, rough splitface stone and polished pebbles border the sleek, frameless glass shower panel. Warm floors heat up the space, and Florim slate tile adds a rich depth of color to the floor. Redesigned and resurfaced with wood plank beams, the ceiling brings yet another level of texture and warmth to the room, while custom cove molding adds dramatic up-lighting effects.
Judges’ Comments:
This elegant bathroom has so many unexpected elements that make sense and mix harmoniously. The use of wood, especially on the ceiling, makes the room so inviting. It has a certain glamour that makes you feel as if you’re in a luxury hotel. Photography by ferdworks.com

petite panache At only 57 square feet, this little bath is big on luxury. Located directly off the formal sitting room and in sight of guests entering the home, the original space needed a fresh look. Faced with the challenge of creating a sleek, updated bathroom that would blend seamlessly with the rest of their house, the homeowners turned to Herzog Kitchen & Bath, Inc. To accommodate guests who might stay over, they created a private entrance from the guest room by installing French doors in place of the existing frame-and-door linen closet. Next, they selected a unique piece of furniture with a Bombay front for the vanity and added a protective glass top with a crackled glass detail underneath. In the shower, full slabs of recycled stone mix with thick glass to create an eco-chic, clean look. A wood floor provides continuity and ties the space to the rest of the home. Additional distinctive details include two custom-created crystal towel hooks, which were creatively transformed from curtain rods. Judges’ Comments:
This bathroom shows a really creative use of a small space. Its unique features complement each other — the tile in the shower walls is reinforced with the backsplash under the mirror, and the smooth curve of the furniture piece is repeated in the mirror. Photography by simonne bolla

The elegant ambience of this traditional master bath, designed by Directions in Design, Inc., makes for a luxurious escape in the vacation home of a St. Louis couple. Dark walnut cabinets provide rich contrast against the cream-colored marble floor and artistic faux finish on the walls, and his-and-her vanities mirror each other on either side of a relaxing therapeutic massage tub. For a touch of feminine flair, her vanity features a convenient dressing table. Accents of soft blues and greens call to mind tranquil waters and create a palette that is perfectly suited to restful relaxation. Delicate details, including a pair of intricate art glass windows, beautiful hand-blown glass sconces mounted on framed mirrors, and a large, crushed clear glass bowl pendant light hanging within the coffered ceiling, tie the space together in this home-away-from-home. his is no ordinary bachelor pad. The glistening glass box perched high above the St. Louis skyline is, in fact, extraordinary. With wide-open spaces that meld seamlessly into one another, resonating with perfect clarity their modern and chic aesthetic, this dramatic and sophisticated space is home to a gentleman who enjoys and appreciates the finer things in life. “I travel a lot for business,” says the homeowner, “and I really enjoy the simple, understated elegance as well as the relaxed refinement found in some of the world’s modern hotels. When I decided to build this loft, I wanted to emulate this hotel-like sophistication. I wanted a place that was simple to care for, with clean lines and a contemporary edge. Really, I just wanted to be able to come home, drop my bags and unwind.” At the pinnacle of the Beck Building in Midtown Alley, which encompasses Olive and Locust streets between Leffingwell and Theresa avenues, this bachelor’s dream haven began life as a simple rooftop.

“This space is entirely new construction,” says Jassen Johnson, founder and partner of Renaissance Development Associates, the firm largely responsible for breathing new life into the historic “Automotive Row” of Midtown Alley. As lead architect and designer for this project, Jassen was challenged by his client literally to create something out of nothing. “We removed a portion of the existing concrete roof and created a staircase that rises up through the opening into the newly constructed space,” says Jassen. “Nothing existed on the roof before we started except an old elevator shaft that we ultimately turned into an outdoor living room.” “I never thought something like this could be done from scratch in St. Louis,” says the homeowner. “Nobody here appears to be building custom urban dwellings like mine. Jassen is always looking at what the larger cities are doing. With Jassen, you sit down over a glass of wine, share pictures from magazines or a favorite hotel and collaborate on some ideas on a napkin. That napkin becomes a CAD drawing, which becomes an architectural plan, and all of a sudden you’re living in a wonderful space. Jassen partnered with me from inception through interior design. That holistic approach to design/build helped maintain the loft’s overall aesthetic integrity.” Indeed, the home that Jassen built rivals the lofty style of some of the best modern hotels. “My client wanted to feel like he was on vacation at home; a combination of modern art gallery, hotel and spa,” he explains. Ascending the contemporary open staircase, with a dramatic LED sphere twinkling overhead, you get the feeling that something truly special awaits your arrival at the top. And you’re right. An impressive wall of floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that open onto a 1,250-square-foot rooftop deck overlook midtown St. Louis, and the view is breathtaking. “I love to entertain,” says the homeowner, “and this place allows me to do that well. Each room flows into the other and then out onto the deck. It’s important to me to have spaces that connect. Since everyone seems to end up in the kitchen for parties, we decided to make the entire loft, indoor and outdoor, connect to the kitchen.” Noting his client’s taste for minimalist contemporary design that is both comfortable, and stylish, Jassen created a home that evokes a “Palm Beach meets the Rat Pack” vibe. With a sophisticated palette of cool gray tones dressing the walls, the feel is masculine and serene — the perfect backdrop to showcase the homeowner’s collection of contemporary

furniture and art. Juxtaposed with the cool walls, a monolith of stacked stone in warm earth tones slices through the loft and is a recurring theme throughout. The deft blending of natural elements, such as the stone, with more contemporary furniture, art and accessories make this high-rise both comfortable to live in and intriguing to visit. A surprisingly ornate pool table painted deep ebony takes the place of the traditional dining room table. “The homeowner doesn’t entertain formally,” explains Jassen. “He didn’t need the typical dining table.” And for

a home that’s all about having fun, the pool table is a welcome addition. The kitchen is sleek and modern with European-inspired touches, such as the floating shelves and cabinets. Stainless steel and chrome offer reflective surfaces that catch the light. Plenty of seating at the island invites interaction with the chef. “I like to have friends over for dinner, but generally it’s an experiential food experience,” explains the homeowner. “We all like to cook together, sharing recipes and techniques. This open and spacious kitchen is ideal for evenings like that.”

The master bedroom and adjoining bath are a study in understated luxury. Repeating the gray gradations found throughout the rest of the loft, the homeowner’s personal retreat is simple and polished. Equally posh is a guest room that doubles as a home office. “This room is really meant to be a hotel suite for guests,” notes the homeowner. A full bath offers a modern take on luxury, and a small Brazilian ipe wood deck offers lucky guests a special space all their own. Perhaps the most spectacular “room” in this loft, however, is the

And more times than not, the same can be said of a home. Imagination and creativity are the powers that fuel good design — design like that of this magnificent home, tucked away on a tree-lined street in a quiet Town and Country neighborhood. At first glance, its classic, albeit breathtaking, brick exterior belies the multifaceted, inventive surprises that wait within. A history-filled fusion of eclectic and artistic styles, this home’s décor has evolved over time, its visionary owners adding new pieces as they encounter them. Rather than opting for the obvious — matching tables and chairs, corresponding bedroom sets and perfectly coordinated fabrics — they use what inspires them. Well-loved furnishings and accessories, some family heirlooms and others new discoveries, span eras and places of origin, from all over the United States to SaintTropez. As a result, their home is filled with incredible histories and
captivating stories belonging to a multitude of meaningful items that have lived lives before. The most impressive and inspiring aspect of the homeowners’ eclectic medley, however, is not the individual pieces that comprise their collection; it’s the beautiful, harmonious way in which their unique, blended style is accomplished. “If I like it, I’ll find a place to make it work,” says the homeowner of her flexible approach to interior design. And with her unmistakable gift for effortlessly mixing the mismatched, it’s a fabulously functional philosophy to live by. For instance, the home’s sophisticated dining room is awash in vintage glamour, marrying delicate, feminine details reminiscent of Versailles with more rustic overtones, such as antique whitewashed oak beams along the soaring ceiling and a stately stone fireplace. Unconstrained by the archetypal rules of space planning

and decorating, these homeowners are free to enjoy what makes them happy and forget the rest. And when they built the home, they adopted a similar strategy. “We wanted our home to have a warm, welcoming feel, so we only built rooms that we would use,” says the homeowner of their decision to forgo the traditional breakfast and formal living rooms. Instead, they chose spaces that were tailored to their family’s lifestyle, such as a wine tasting room, situated on the second story rather than the lower level like most wine cellars. “We designed our house for entertaining,” she adds. When hosting get-togethers, large or small, the dining room can accommodate up to 24 people during the holidays and other special events. The kitchen, one view of which transports you to an upscale farmhouse on the French countryside, exists in clever contrast to the more polished, palatial atmosphere of the adjacent dining room. Vintage touches, such as the expansive center island made from an antique painter’s counter, tell a quaint, more casual story that harmonizes with the European-inspired stucco walls and distressed, wide-plank pine floors. Decidedly French, yet unique in their own ways, the styles of these neighboring spaces coalesce rather than conflict, offering visual interest and an engaging element of the unexpected. Through the kitchen, a set of antique doors, rusted to timeworn

perfection, lead to the cozy hearth room. Hints of shabby chic styling and comfortable French Country flair make this room a place where the family can truly relax. Two brick walls feature a stucco treatment, giving them a textural, antiquated appearance in keeping with the authentic French atmosphere. Windows in the hearth room peer out to a picturesque haven of lush green gardens and an outdoor entertainment oasis. Under an expansive arched pergola, a dining table offers seating for 10 next to a stone fireplace — an idyllic locale for an alfresco meal in late summer or early fall. The nearby free-form pool beckons guests to take a dip, while the pool house offers cool refuge from the scorching summer sun. With its luxe lodge décor, it also serves as a year-round “getaway” for the family, who enjoy hosting Christmas morning and other important occasions, including graduation and birthday parties, there. “We use the pool house a lot — especially in the fall and winter,” says the homeowner. “We probably use it even more then than during the regular pool season.” With imagination and originality, these innovative owners have designed more than a home. They’ve created a work of art that can be enjoyed to the fullest every day of the year. And with their eclectic, out-of-the-box style, it just might look a little bit different every day of the year, too.

or a couple with 10 kids, two St. Bernards, one black lab and three horses, “getting away from it all” has special meaning. But for Kathryn and Jim Sansone, that doesn’t mean yearly trips to exotic locations or Saturday evenings spent at expensive restaurants. For this busy couple, “getting away from it all” means heading just outside their back door to a thatched-roof trellis to enjoy a glass of wine and talk about their day, knowing that the kids are just a stone’s throw away. In her book, Woman First, Family Always, Kathryn helps mothers learn how to create balance in their lives. Her journey into the public eye began on a birthday visit to The Oprah Winfrey Show. In Kathryn’s book, she says, “After the show, Oprah began asking the audience how they stay fit. I raised my hand and told her that weight training has been the easiest, fastest way I have found to stay in shape — and I was six months pregnant at the time. When Oprah asked me how many kids I have, I answered, ‘Eight with one on the way.’ That’s when Oprah brought me up on stage and asked me more questions about how I looked so fit after having eight children. I gladly shared with her my physical routine. A few weeks later, the phone rang. A cheerful voice said, ‘Kathryn? This is The Oprah Winfrey Show calling.’” Kathryn has been an inspiration to women and mothers ever since. It is that dedication to a happy family and a healthy self that led her and Jim to create an outdoor living area that is truly their vacation home – a place where they can enjoy being together as a couple and as a family, rejuvenating their spirits as well as their bodies. “We wanted to feel like we were on vacation even when we were at home,” explains Kathryn, “and we wanted our kids to feel comfortable entertaining friends here. This area allows them to do that. We can keep a close eye on them but still give them their space.” A gorgeous swimming pool is the centerpiece of this alfresco oasis and is surrounded by an open-air veranda, a stunning and unique pool house that

doubles as a guest retreat, and a delightful waterfall that ripples over a natural stone wall into a fish pond below. “When we first built our pool,” explains Kathryn, “we built the veranda, too. It was great, but after several years, we realized we needed a bathroom for changing and a space that would also double as room for guests. With 10 kids, we didn’t have the luxury of a dedicated guest room in our home.” And so Kathryn’s vision of a casual gathering spot, reminiscent of Mexico with strong Spanish influences, was born. “Jim and I love the Mexican culture and architecture,” she says. “Ironically, both sets of our parents honeymooned in Acapulco and have always enjoyed the easy lifestyle and simple décor found south of the border. We knew we wanted our pool house to reflect this carefree way of life.” With its terra-cotta Mexican tile roof, creamy stucco walls and

rustic iron accents, the Sansones’ home-away-from-home truly does transport you to another place. Three large arched doorways, fitted with old doors that Kathryn found on an antiquing foray, welcome family and friends into a living space that is not a typical pool house. A large great room, with a soaring vaulted ceiling of rough-hewn timbers, immediately sets the mood for comfort. The floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace is a stunning focal point, and a sink-into-softness brown leather sectional sofa practically begs to be lounged upon. The décor is simple, relaxed and indestructible. Nothing is too precious that it can't be enjoyed by everyone (yes, even 10 kids!) A guest room and bath, full kitchen and dining area, bar and adjacent hearth room with yet another smaller fireplace make this pool house live so much larger. “It has everything a regular house has,” says Kathryn, “just on a much smaller scale.” Kathryn enlisted the help of interior designer Sohaila Danesh of Arlene Lilie to tweak the space. “Sohaila has a great sense of style,” says Kathryn. But for the most part, the décor is a glimpse into Kathryn’s soul; each piece having special meaning to her. “I especially love what I call my spiritual wall,” explains Kathryn. “The decorative crosses, handmade rosaries and other religious items reflect our family’s faith and are items that I’ve collected over the years or that have been given to me as gifts. My mother-in-law always said that ‘to whom much is given, much is expected.' We share those feelings and realize how very blessed we are as a family. I always want to acknowledge those blessings.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

B~unt© Backyard
With a garden full of fresh veggies, digging up dinner is a fun summer pastime BY Katie Underhill PHOTOGRAPHY by Ashley gieseking
For years, this charming vegetable garden was nothing more than a patch of mulch in a suburban family’s big backyard. But this year, with help from a hands-on grandpa, these creative homeowners have turned a small corner of their yard into a healthy garden of purpose. Now, when one of the family’s meals calls for fresh herbs, jalapeño peppers, cucumbers or any other number of fresh veggies, it’s just a quick walk out the back door to pluck some produce, making any dish extra special.
54
Top, left: Raised wooden beds, carefully crafted by the homeowner’s hands-on father, keep the produce plot organized and easy to maintain. At the garden’s center, a pyramid-shaped trellis protects tomatoes and supports an innovative watering system. Top, right: Fresh herbs, including thyme, are abundant in the garden. Above, left to right: Green bell peppers, bright orange marigolds and a tiny tomato.

An enchanting outdoor play space is a child’s dream come true BY Judy Uelk PhotographY by Ashley Gieseking
“We talk ~f sunshine and ~f s~ng, And summer days when we were y~ung; þweet childish days that were as l~ng As twenty days are n~w.”
—William Wordsworth, “To a Butterfly”
A meandering stone walkway, hugged by neat rows of emerald green boxwood, leads to the welcoming front door of a small white clapboard house, surrounded by abundant blossoms of cornflowerblue hydrangeas. As if plucked from a fairytale forest, this captivating cottage houses a pint-sized art studio and was lovingly created for two special children, Julia and Jack, by their doting grandfather, “Pops.”
56
And the magic doesn’t end there. Step onto the side porch of this amazing little house, and you’ll find a classic black wrought-iron table ready for tea parties, quiet time with a book or chatting with a best friend. A winsome white footbridge beckons just beyond, taking visitors up and over a delightful turtle fort (also created by Pops) that is home to Fred, Lil Weezy, Bashful, Frank, Rocky, Sunshine and Achmed,

a mixture of box turtles and Russian tortoises. “Jack and Julia love to spend time in this special area of our yard,” says mom, Jen. “It’s so peaceful out here. I call it the little Zen garden.” In addition to the turtles, Koi fish Jeremiah, Nigel and Flipper have found a happy home swimming amongst the lily pads and beneath a bubbling fountain. Loving animals is just natural for Jack and Julia, who also have an adorable white dog named Coco. “Jack loves to take care of the turtles,” says Jen. “He is very interested in science and animals and has researched everything there is to know about turtle care.” Every winter, Jack carefully places his charges in two big Tupperware containers filled with mulch, food and some water. The turtles burrow down in the mulch and hibernate for the winter. “Sometimes I’ll take them out and put them in warm water to give them some moisture,” Jack explains. And just as a mother can distinguish her twins, Jack and Julia know exactly who each turtle and fish is and have fun conducting turtle races on their driveway. “We are really creating some wonderful childhood memories here,” says Jen, “especially the memories Jack and Julia will have of spending time with their Pops,” who regularly stops by to see if the turtles are okay and if, just maybe, they need to think of something new and fun to add to the fort.

slhl CHEERS
efreshing eds + Warm-Weather Whites BY Lorraine Raguseo
Pairs well with:
Cold seafood salad, especially if it features shellfish, such as crab and lobster
58
Pairs well with:
Raw oysters or clams, Waldorf chicken salad and spicy Chinese or Thai noodles
Grown in the San Antonio Valley, a small wine region in Chile, west of Santiago, these grapes produce a refreshing wine that is rich with tropical flavor. For red wine lovers, the August heat should not deter you from enjoying your favorite vintage — just serve it slightly chilled. Red varieties that can take a little time on ice include Pinot Noir and Pinotage (a hybrid of Pinot Noir and the lesser-known French grape Cinsault). In addition to France's Burgundy region where this grape was born, Oregon, Washington state and California produce many well-known Pinot Noirs. Today, nearly every cool-climate region in the world boasts Pinot Noir vines. Some of the surprising superstars are from Chile, such as the 2009 Corralillo Pinot Noir. A deep, intense red wine with waves of cherry, cranberry and spice, this varietal, when chilled, is a great ending to a late summer meal. Pinotage comes exclusively from South Africa. The Simonsig Winery was the first to produce it in the 1960s. Their 2007 vintage is a collage of raspberry and plum flavors, with an earthy, almost smoky character.
Pairs well with:
Oily fishes, such as salmon or bluefish, ceviche, sea urchin or other sushi, and fresh oysters
Pairs well with:
Baby back ribs with a semi-sweet apricot sauce or duck in a bing cherry sauce

Simonsig Chenin Blanc 2009
There's nothing more appealing than a crisp glass of white wine to cool the palate on a hot August day. And although Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Riesling easily come to mind, there's a world of refreshing whites, now available in the United States, that are definitely worth a summertime sip! Chenin Blanc is just one of these often overlooked varietals. A versatile grape from the Loire Valley in France, it is also grown in South Africa and California. In fact, some of the best Chenin values on the market today come from South Africa. The Simonsig Winery from the Stellenbosch region near Capetown produces a beautifully fruity version with hints of ripe pear, apricot, kiwi and pineapple. Sauvignon Blanc is, of course, always a warm-weather favorite, and the citrus varieties are especially welcome this time of year. The 2009 Two Angels Sauvignon Blanc, with its appealing aromas of grapefruit and the tangy flavors of green apple and other tart fruits, is a good one to try. This California grape is grown in the High Valley appellation of Lake County (about an hour north of Napa Valley). Matetic Vineyards' 2010 organic EQ Sauvignon Blanc is another wine worth your while.
Pairs well with:
Cherry or cranberry sorbet when served chilled or goat cheese, cured ham, light red meats, pastas and spicy foods when served at room temperature
