WELCOME TO SAINT CHARLES COUNTY

Without a doubt, you've made the right decision relocating to St. Charles County! The St. Charles County live, work, play experience is one you won't ever want to part with. One of the best parts is that you'll be pleasantly surprised to find beautiful homes at affordable prices in urban, suburban and rural communities (pages 10-16). St. Charles County has a small-town feel, but it is actually the fastest-growing region in Missouri. When checking out possible home communities, focus on where the kids will attend school. Take your time, you'll find the school and neighborhood that naturally fit your family's needs (pages 36-42).

After exploring our diverse communities and schools, take some time out to enjoy the region's rivers, lakes and rolling hills. St. Charles County resides in one of the Midwest's most beautiful states and also has an impressive historical background to share. Remember Lewis & Clark, the famous duo that mapped our expanding country after President Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon of France in 1803 for a mere $15 Million? Those two famous explorers actually started their expedition from St. Charles on the Missouri riverfront on May 14, 1804 after securing all the provisions they needed for their famed journey west. Another well-known historical figure we claim is Daniel Boone, the epitome of a true frontiersman. After living life as an excellent hunter and trapper and providing for his family, Boone began leading settlement parties to Kentucky and Missouri. Lewis and Clark didn't meet Daniel Boone in person but both noted in their journals that their expedition stopped at Boone's Settlement on the Missouri River.

You'll never want for something to do as there is always something happening in our communities. We have petting farms, wineries, festivals, parades, baseball games, tours, and miles and miles of hiking trails! Our Calendar of Events summarizes the year's many activities (pages 22-25).

Coupled with top-ranked hospitals, universities, sports teams and historic neighborhoods, we've got you covered. Having fun and staying healthy is our number one priority here in the Midwest

Enjoy!

from SCRATCH STYLE

Architect Godat Architectural Design

Fashion-forward homeowner Sharlene wanted to create a home that felt like her in every single detail, so she commissioned a custom house within Castle Rock subdivision in St. Paul, MO. “I wanted a space that truly reflected my personality, lifestyle and values. I didn’t want to compromise,” she recalls. “Building a custom home allowed me to prioritize quality, function and longevity in ways a pre-built home just couldn’t offer.”

“My favorite part of the house is the kitchen and family room because it’s where everything comes together. Whether I’m entertaining friends or just unwinding, it feels like the heart of the home,” asserts Sharlene. “It reflects who I am and how I love to live. It’s both beautiful and functional, and I never get tired of being in that space. It’s my go-to retreat.”

She received “life-saving interior design assistance” from Tamsin Design Group’s owner and designer Tamsin Mascetti and designer Nicki Lyell. Tamsin says Sharlene was interested in a modern aesthetic that was classic and timeless. “Her chic dressing style inspired us. She wanted a luxurious home feeling, keeping function top of mind.”

Nicki emphasizes the benefits of designing the majority of the house from the ground up. “Being involved in the beginning of a custom home process is so beneficial to an overall design, allowing us to create a cohesive feeling throughout." During the building process, the two designers worked with Sharlene to modify floor plans for better function and flow. “Together we selected all interior finishes from flooring, plumbing, lighting, cabinets, countertops to

Intentionally incorporating classic architectural details such as arched openings bridges the home's traditional aspects with the more modern elements radiating from dramatic lighting, tile and furniture.

door hardware. Our focus was to create an elegant, new home with unexpected details thoughtfully included,” Nicki says.

The house was constructed by Jeff Bax, owner of St. Charles County-headquartered Bax Custom Homes. He says they first worked with the building site topography to achieve Sharlene’s objective of having a flat back yard, while also getting a partial walkout from the lower level. “This homesite was very large, so we spread the garages and porte-cochere out to add more length to the home,” he explains.

Jeff planned the home’s layout with Nick Godat, vice president at Godat Architectural Design in Hermann, MO, but it was Sharlene’s clear vision for the home that became the driving design force. “Her preferred style was loosely based on English country homes for exterior elements, and materials chosen by Sharlene herself were used within the framework of that theme,” Nick says.

While Tamsin admits it’s tough to select a favorite element of this project because they enjoyed all of its aspects, she spotlights the foyer with a deep-red Sparta chandelier with glass spikes. “We added a coffered ceiling detail in the vestibule and formal living room. The space is spectacular, fun and works so well together.” She and Nicki also recommended a custom metal kitchen hood with inset horizontal banding in brass and dark bronze, while the alabaster Arteriors pendants over the kitchen island echo the hood’s horizontal lines. The kitchen’s rich, brown island cabinets and bronze hood balance the creamy Neolith Calacatta island tops and textured Calacatta backsplash for an overall look that is fashionable and functional. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

The real estate market can be unpredictable, and its constantly changing mortgage rates can feel daunting to first-time buyers and seasoned homeowners alike. Historical Foundations

Photography Courtesy of The Foundry Art Centre

Founded in 1769, St. Charles was originally established as a trading post by French Canadian settler and fur trader, Louis Blanchette. However, due to its position on the Missouri River, St. Charles slowly developed into a city focusing on commerce and trade, welcoming guests and travelers from all over the world. In fact, many of the buildings found on Main Street were originally built as homes and businesses to accommodate fur traders and blacksmiths, who would eventually settle down in the area. The architecture of these buildings are still present even today, where visitors can witness the rich cultural history of St. Charles.

Main Street specifically contains many of the city's historical landmarks, such as the First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site. Here tourists can take a glimpse at a restoration of Missouri’s first State Capitol building and learn about the early history of Missouri’s government

and how St. Charles helped shape Missouri into what it is today. Main Street also contains the Lewis and Clark Boat House and Museum, which details the historic beginning of the two travelers' journey into the unknown and their connection to the St. Charles region.

Located directly alongside Main Street is the St. Charles trailhead of the Katy Trail. Spanning nearly 240 miles, this trail is the longest continuous rail trail in the country, and trail users can pass through many of Missouri’s scenic attractions, including the Missouri River on one side and landscapes of forests and fields on the other. The Katy Trail includes 26 trail heads across Missouri and has celebrated 36 years of operation since it opened on April 28, 1990.

Also available are four tours that visitors can take to learn more about the history of Main Street, held from April 3rd, through September 27th, excluding holidays and festivals.

MO Than Meets The Eye: Surprises Of The First State Capitol. Held on Fridays at 10:30 a.m., visitors can learn much about the impact that St. Charles had as Missouri’s first state capitol, from the role the city played during the Civil War to its impact on the world of entertainment.

Historic Highlight Tours

Held on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., visitors can learn about a brief overview of 250 years of the history of St. Charles, from its founding to how it came to what it is today.

The Key To The West: Pioneers, Explorers and Traders… Oh My!

Held on Sundays at 10:30 a.m., visitors can learn about the importance of the location of St. Charles and how its location was the starting point for many explorers into the west.

Macabre Main Street

MAIN ART ON

Previously a train car factory, the Foundry was established in 2004 after extensive renovations were made to the 36,800-square-foot building to transform it into the interdisciplinary art center it is today. However, the history of this building can be traced back to the 1850s, when it was a factory built for manufacturing passenger cars for steam railroads. From then on, the factory traded many hands and grew and expanded until it was bought out in 1899 by a group of companies that eventually formed the American Car & Foundry.

Located on St. Charles historic Main Street, The Foundry Art Centre offers artist exhibitions, classes and venue rentals.

Exhibitions

The Foundry offers many different exhibitions throughout the year with a variety of artists both from the St. Louis area and around the country. The Foundry also hosts student exhibitions, where over 300 schools within the region have displayed their students' work in the Baue Family Children’s Gallery. All exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Events

The Foundry provides many different events, including some free programs available to kids and adults alike. Some of these events include First Fridays, held the first Friday of every month, when the Foundry holds extended hours for visitors of all ages to enjoy the galleries, meet the resident artists, and en-

Midwestern History

Ed Boyce, the late founder of Innsbrook, was inspired to create the community after seeing an A-frame chalet in Aspen, Colorado, and dreaming of bringing a similar scenic getaway to Missouri. Boyce teamed up with Warren Wobbe Sr. and completed the Aspenhof development in Warren County in 1969. From the original 520 acres and 154 chalets, the project would grow 15 times the size of the original development. The name Innsbrook was created in reference to a region of Austria known for beautiful A-frames. In Boyce’s words, the development is a mix of “nature, recreation and serenity.”

Photography courtesy of Missouri State Parks

Running along the route of the former Missouri-KansasTexas Railroad, the Katy Trail spans 240 miles across Missouri. With countless walking, biking and horseback riding trails, historic sites and more, there are endless opportunities for entertainment.

Step into History

Curving along the Missouri River, with more than 20 towns in its vicinity, the trail is packed with opportunities for lunch stops, winery visits and more. Historic St. Charles sits as a tribute to the start of Lewis and Clark’s expedition. Step back into colonial times while visiting historic South Main Street. With more than 125 boutiques, locally owned businesses, restaurants and attractions, there’s fun for the whole family. Don’t miss out on the Lewis and Clark Boathouse & Museum to learn more about how the pair discovered the Gateway to the West.

Joyride

Further into St. Charles County, the Katy Trail winds through Missouri’s wine country and the Historic Daniel Boone Home. Make a detour into Defiance to rent bikes and spend a day cruising up and down the trail, taking in some of the best natural sites Missouri offers. The Katy Trail Bike Shuttle runs during May, June, September and October to help riders transport their bikes to the trail. Additionally, bike tours are available for those looking for a guided experience. Looking for a quick stop to rest? Popular spots for bikers to stop for a break include the Bike Stop Cafe in historic St. Charles, Good News Brewing Company in Defiance and the Augusta Bakery and Coffee Shop.

Looking for a historical excursion?

Stop just off Highway F and take a stroll around the Historic Daniel Boone Home. Here, visitors are invited to explore the free site and peek inside the reconstructed 19th-century village and gift shop.

Comfort Zone

If you’re planning to spend the day on the trail, it’s important to know what amenities the site offers. Open from sunrise to sunset, the trail is pet-friendly, but they ask that pets remain on a leash at all times. Some trailheads offer restrooms and water areas and a comprehensive list of each site's amenities can be found on the Missouri State Parks website. It’s also important to note that the trails are covered in crushed limestone, which helps absorb the impact for outdoor activities but could make bikes dusty during multi-day rides.
