Put it back where you found it!
I couldn't stop smiling, and I was feeling quite envious at the same time. Just this morning I made a mental note. In my next life, I am going to be organized and stay organized—that simple. No more throwing important "stuff" in a random drawer to be filed away later.
I t all started with a spice drawer. I was envious of a very well-organized spice drawer in a newly updated kitchen. All the spices were organized in alphabetical order, packaged in identical bottles and within reaching distance of the range. Who has the time to do all this? Oh...just about anybody that makes having peace of mind a priority (pages 38-45)!
R aising a family and staying organized can be a challenge, but if you take an extra minute to put an item in its respective storage place you're on your way to finding peace. Unfortunately, you must train family members to do the same. Family members don't mean to sabotage your peace, but it's a lot easier for them to leave a pair of scissors in the family room than to put it back where it was found!
Knowing how each bathroom drawer or cabinet is being utilized is paramount to anyone preparing for the day and is also a prerequisite for a bath designer to earn a place amongst the winning designers in this year's St. Louis Homes + Lifestyles Baths of the Year contest. Stunning bathrooms highlighting both innovative design and maximum use of limited space are the very elements you'll find in each of our stunning 2025 Baths of the Year (pages 16-27).
Enjoy!

Trimmed in TRADITION
Meghan Heeter of Ättlingar provides a history and exclusive look into the world of traditionally hand-crafted bathroom cabinetry.
Edited by Lily Stassi
Founded in Lineage
I met my Ättlingar business partner, Siri Eklund, while renovating her family’s 1920s Tudor home. With storage space at a premium in this historic home, we set out to incorporate valuable medicine cabinet storage to complement every bath. But when it came to finding a cabinet that matched the home’s level of detail and craftsmanship, nothing on the market inspired us. We started Ättlingar because we believe that everyday hardworking bath fixtures deserve to be as beautiful as they are functional. From mirrors to accessories, we help homeowners and designers add elegance and function to their thoughtfully designed spaces. Meaning “lineage” in Swedish, Ättlingar is a heartfelt nod to Siri’s Nordic heritage and her family’s rich history of craft and cabinetmaking.

Fabulous Function
Inspired by antiques from the 18th and 19th centuries, our medicine cabinets bring a unique level of detail and beauty to an often-overlooked storage piece. Beyond the aesthetic, we’ve found clever ways to make our cabinets distinctively functional. For example, our new locking medicine cabinet collection features a lock and key with a tassel, providing an Old-World appeal while also offering privacy and security.
Keepers of Craft and Tradition
We are inspired by our Swedish heritage and the Scandinavian philosophy that ‘beautiful things make life better.’ All of our cabinets, mirrors and accessories are handcrafted in Missouri by experts with decades of carpentry experience. Utilizing timehonored woodworking techniques, we craft heirloom-quality pieces featuring signature sawtooth shelving, dovetailed corners and intricate inlays reminiscent of centuries-old antiques. Each Ättlingar inlay design features thousands of cut pieces of walnut, maple, mahogany and sycamore. Unlike massproduced, utilitarian medicine cabinets, ours are constructed from solid wood with expertly finished boxes and frames.
Interior designers and homeowners alike are craving authenticity in their homes. This can be added through the use of natural
materials such as rich woods and timeless stone. Additionally, incorporating locally handcrafted pieces not only provides you with the highest quality, but also ensures that these increasingly rare talents will continue to be nurtured and shared.
Professional Guidance
As an interior designer, I often select a bath mirror early in the design process. It’s essential to determine the mirror size to place the sconce lighting that will flank the mirror perfectly. Homeowners interact with mirrors or cabinets in their bathrooms upon first waking up. I believe it’s the ideal opportunity to reflect the owner’s personality and style and start the day off on an optimistic foot.
Working with an interior designer is a great way to gain access to the best custom furniture and cabinet shops. You’ll also have the guidance of a professional to help you determine the style and function of your custom piece, as well as an expert to provide both the detailed drawings and inspiration! High quality bathroom design is achieved where sophistication meets functionality, and this year’s Bath of the Year winners certainly made the mark.

Platinum Winner Powder Rooms
Castle Design and Stonehall Cabinetry
Why the judges love it:
The shape and cut of the marble slab are stately and sophisticated. When in combination with the calming, elegant wallpaper and the negative space created by the carved wood legs of the vanity, the look is balanced yet maintains elegance and complexity.
The renovation of this elegant powder room, guided by the clients’ refined palette and the design team’s exceptional creativity, sought to refresh the first-floor home’s interiors while leaning on its existing bones to create an elevated, timeless and functional home. The design team worked thoughtfully to create a dramatic, custom-built vanity, with a deep red high gloss finish that anchors the space and provides a rich grounding element for the wallpaper and the detailed marble countertop. This design is enhanced by the countertop’s tasteful details, impressive apron and handsome backsplash. The natural stone’s beauty is coordinated beautifully with the room’s color theory, with the plumbing carefully curated to highlight the marble backsplash.

The designers chose Verde Calacatta marble with its strong color and veining as the star of this powder room. Extra attention was given to ensuring that both the walls and fixtures were kept simple, yet complementary in order to add texture and lightness to the room. The room was finished with a playful circle and diamond marble floor with marble base molding in a similar tone to the wallpaper, giving the floor personality without overpowering the vanity marble. Decorative light fixtures perfectly mirror the stone pattern and keep with the modern theme of the room.

Powder Rooms
Karr Bick Kitchen + Bath Gold Winner
Why the judges love it:
Careful detail is evident when observing the natural banding of the marble vanity—the artisan shows intention with how beautifully aligned the cut is in tandem with the direction of the banding. The overall look of the room has an uncommon “cosmopolitan flavor” that demands attention as a work of art.

This main floor bathroom renovation is soft, subtle and strong with its blend of both style and function. A porcelain octagon mosaic floor with a soft taupe accent welcomes the original reglazed cast iron tub and provides a durable foundation for the room while remembering its origins. The brass console, with a deep integrated sink and its coordinating faucet, opens the space in the room to give it an airy and classic feel and serves as a towel bar when needed. The smooth gray wainscoting greets
the palette of blue willowberry leaves in the wallcovering and winks at its light taupe berries and gold stems. Leather-wrapped brass sconces hug the arched beveled mirror above the console. The shower walls are drenched in deep blue textured ceramic tiles with brass trim for a soothing and well-appointed bath experience. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.
Walnut Lily Gold Winner
42-76 square feet
Why the judges love it:
The color chosen for the brass fixtures is pulled directly from the wallpaper, creating a strong sense of intention in its complementary palette. However, the details remain surprising, with leather covered sconces being a unique and functional design choice that still manages to work with the color scheme.

Gold Winner
100-135 square feet
Alspaugh Kitchen and Bath and June Roesslein Interiors
Why the judges love it:
The design of this bathroom focuses on being simple and practical. The his-and-hers vanity divided by tall medicine cabinets provides ample options for storage and personal space without overpowering the other details of the room. Everything about the bathroom is clean and sleek from the wallpaper to the hardware.
Dark glazed maple cabinetry features doors with square molding applied for a tailored, crisp look. Matte black fixtures and pendants with offset ribbed glass shades balance, brighten and add sophistication to the room. Leathered Taj Mahal countertops echo the soft creaminess of the tile floor. A green textured wallcovering broadens the room visually, and enlivens the room with a natural color in an otherwise neutral space. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Artistically inclined homeowners envisioned a primary bathroom that honored the architectural heritage of their Tower Grove East home, while embracing bold choices in material and color. Staying true to the home’s early 1900s roots, modern elements are layered with industrial brass plumbing fixtures set against dramatic Viola marble countertops and carved Carrara wall tile. Pressed glass lighting, a new clawfoot tub, rich stained wood paneling and a carefully sourced vintage chandelier add period-appropriate charm and texture, striking a thoughtful balance between old and new. Gold Winner 100-135 square feet Tie
Rosette Forever Homes and Studio MC
Why the judges love it:
The vintage bathtub and fixtures are integrated well with the modern feel of the color palette chosen. Attractive wainscotting adds to the elegant charm of the space and provides texture that matches the vanity drawers. Additionally, the spacious shower provides a touch of practicality and versatility that makes this bathroom well rounded in its design.

140-170 square feet
Moda Kitchen and Bath Platinum Winner
Why the judges love it: This bathroom shines where detail quietly draws the eye. The primarily white color scheme allows textures from the walls and mosaic floor to do the work, providing a clean, ethereal retreat. The steel hardware serves to anchor the room where it needs to be—at the simple, yet thoughtfully crafted wood vanity. Quiet sophistication dominates the room and renders itself in every detail.
This primary bath redefines the expectations of a traditional suburban remodel. The vision was to create a clean, open and light-filled retreat—one that balances luxury with intentional simplicity. At the heart of the design is a striking wet room concept, seamlessly integrating a curbless shower and a freestanding soaking tub behind a floorto-ceiling glass panel. Materials were carefully chosen to elevate the space while maintaining warmth and texture. A custom walnut vanity, crafted with grain-matched drawer fronts, anchors the room with natural richness. The vanity wall is finished with Fireclay Tile, while the floor features a marble mosaic—adding movement and subtle pattern without overwhelming the space. Brizo plumbing fixtures provide a refined, sculptural edge. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

140-170 square feet
Chelsea Design Co and Wise Bros Gold Winner
Why the judges love it: Every feature of this bath proves to be intentional and purposeful. The shape of the tub appears designed for comfort and ergonomics while every hook is thoughtfully placed. The color of the ceiling balances the weight of the cabinet while the small-scale floor tile creates a strong base texture without taking away the focus from the marble walls.
This primary suite was part of a large renovation for a young family of doctors with two children. They both sought a soft, sleek aesthetic, but her Brazilian background influenced some exciting choices. The white painted barn door with a large inset mirror reflects a window and striking floor-to-ceiling European white oak linen cabinets with can inserts and ample storage. The engineered stone countertop features a low backsplash with rounded side splashes that reference the shapes of the vanity’s inset drawer pulls, sink cut outs and vanity lights. Graphic porcelain tile is paired with authentic marble skirting, a stunning picket Carrara marble mosaic on the floor and marble chair rail around the mirrors. The warm white walls and taupe ceiling bring warmth and depth and accentuate the marble veining. The shower features a tiled trough drain, double shower head and rain shower head, with a hidden niche within the knee wall, giving this bathroom plenty of practicality as well.

Platinum Winner
180-263 square feet
Karr Bick Kitchen + Bath
Why the judges love it:
The sun-drenched atmosphere of this bath provides an elegant and airy oasis. There is a skillful sense of respect for and harmony in texture and color. The tile and fixtures give this room an artisan feel, while rhythm in the arches above the vanity and doorways shows care for cohesion and consistency.
This formerly dated bathroom has been reimagined as a luxurious and serene retreat. The new layout includes a spacious walk-in closet, an expansive shower, generous vanity space, dedicated linen storage, a separate makeup area and a sculptural freestanding soaking tub. A recessed vanity is framed by an elegant arched opening, while a custom limestone arch introduces the steam shower with a sense of grandeur. Inside, dramatic floor-to-ceiling marble-look slabs offer striking visual impact with the benefit of easy maintenance. Rich alder wood cabinetry pairs beautifully with a tumbled marble floor that flows uninterrupted into the zero-entry shower. Patterned marble tile provides a sophisticated backdrop for the vanities and soaking tub, while leathered quartz countertops and wall-mounted faucets enhance both style and functionality. A hidden jib door cleverly conceals the toilet closet, which reveals a playful wallpaper surprise that complements the etched marble accent tiles surrounding the tub and vanity.

Alspaugh Kitchen and Bath Gold Winner 180-263 square feet
Why the judges love it:
This bath keeps a modest, traditional air to it while feeling modern and sophisticated. The design provides a thoughtful use of space and expert use of monochromatic flow
Designed for a classic, tailored aesthetic, this bath employs moldings applied to both cabinet doors and walls for a custom built-in look. The cool blue of Parma Gray covers the cabinets, walls and trim, lending a sense of serenity and uniformity to the bath. Honed Bianca Carrara marble countertops are dressed up with a backsplash cutout detail that aligns with the wall paneling. Satin nickel plumbing fixtures provide a cool neutral blend, while brushed brass cabinet hardware and lighting elements become the “jewelry” of the space. An organic freestanding tub gives an airy, uncluttered feel. The simple white shower echoes the slipper tub, both leaving a clean, crisp impression. The bath is completed by a separate toilet room and a tall built-in linen cabinet. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

homas A. Edison once said that good fortune often happens when opportunity meets with preparation. The prolific inventor wasn’t writing about building a custom home, but the missive would nonetheless resonate with the team responsible for designing and constructing this new home in Frontenac.
Architect Robert Srote says the homeowners arrived at their initial meetings with a stack of inspiration photos. “It’s both helpful and inspiring when homeowners come to us with a clear sense of what resonates with them,” says Robert, the principal of Srote & Co Architects. In this case, the empty nesters envisioned a space that would feel intimate and comfortable for everyday living as a couple, yet easily expand to welcome their grown children and extended family during visits. “Striking that balance between cozy and spacious was a key goal from the outset,” says Robert. “Creating a home that lives well at both scales without ever feeling too empty or too crowded.”
Homeowners Steve and Terri spent more than a year searching for appropriate lots in established areas of Town and Country and Frontenac. “We found (builder) Jim Tegethoff through friends he had built houses for,” says the husband. “Jim had his ear to the ground looking for lots and teardowns, and between us and him, we worked together to find a lot.”
The acre-sized lot of an existing home in Frontenac Forest held tremendous appeal. “I’ve always considered this neighborhood and its location to be very prime,” says Jim, owner of Tegethoff Homes. “And as we considered what they wanted with the property and their house, it just felt like a home run.” The existing house on the property was removed and plans proceeded for the new home.
Terri says that while they wanted more space than they’d had in their previous home, they were not interested in multiple, rarely used rooms. “I didn’t want a sunroom, a living room, six bedrooms, just a lot of extra rooms we were never going to use,” she says. Her husband, Steve says he wanted a study/ home office where he could work comfortably at home, and they both wanted a first-floor primary suite and a large kitchen flowing into the family room. A screened-in porch leading out to a pool, expansive outdoor living spaces and lower-level entertaining areas to appeal to their adult children rounded out their wish list.
A s they refined that list, “we spent an inordinate amount of time just driving around, taking pictures of things we liked on the exteriors of homes,” says Steve. “Many, many Sundays were spent doing that, and then we’d circle what we liked about an exterior, a certain kind of stone, a roof line or a peak, and shoot those photos to Robert. He took those ideas and melded them together into what we have now, which we really like.”
Robert describes the exterior as a blend of timeless French Country architecture with a modern sensibility. “Traditional elements, such
Opposite page: Seamless flow from the kitchen into the great room was a primary goal for the home’s floor plan. “They wanted a lighter, brighter feel in the new home,” says designer Kathleen Grim, who suggested neutral upholstered pieces brightened with colorful pillows and accessories.
“Beams weren’t part of the plans originally, but I can’t imagine the room now without them,” says designer Kathleen Grim. “Often ceilings get overlooked but they’re a really important part of the space.”
This page, below: Thibaut’s “Pasadena” wallpaper brings cheerful florals to a desk area adjacent to the laundry room. “I like this little nook,” says the wife. “Whenever I’m paying bills or doing laundry, just the mundane of everyday life, it makes me happy doing those tasks here.”
as steep rooflines, timber columns, stone and stucco facades and classic proportions, are reinterpreted with cleaner lines, simplified detailing and a more restrained material palette,” Robert says. “The result is an elegant yet approachable home that feels rooted in tradition but tailored for contemporary living.”
The homeowners’ groundwork extended to the interiors as well. Srote & Co interior designer Kathleen Grim recalls their first meeting. “They were very prepared with stacks of inspiration photos they liked,” says Kathleen. “Overall, they wanted a lighter,
brighter feel in the new home and to improve some of the functionality of the spaces compared to their previous home.”
An inspiration image of diagonal ceiling beams informed the design of the dining room’s ceiling treatment. “We took an idea and made it our own,” says Kathleen, noting the “fantastic experience” working with the Tegethoff Carpentry craftsmen in designing and creating the tongue-and-groove, beamed ceiling. “They are so talented,” Kathleen says of the carpentry group. “They made sure to capture the vision, but they also had really

good ideas of how to do it. With several areas of the home, like the trim on the curved wall in the entry, they were thrilled to demonstrate what they’re capable of.”
On the opposite side of the entryway’s curved staircase, the wall bows outward within the husband’s study. A curved wall has some design limitations—Kathleen notes—so she chose a Phillip Jeffries wallpaper to make the wall a feature of the room. “The wallpaper’s rivets make a grid pattern for a menswear feel, and it also pulls the color palette together,” says Kathleen,

The walls and coffered ceiling are painted in Benjamin Moore “Night Train,” a blend of gray, blue and green that softens the room’s masculine and moody atmosphere.
K athleen says every component—from paint color selection to trim detail to cabinetry hardware—received the “attention and thoughtfulness it deserved for a home of this quality,." She affirms: “That’s one of the things I’m most proud of.”
She points to the hardware on the family room cabinetry as just one example. “It’s a big piece and a dark stain, so it could have been a bit overpowering,” says Kathleen. “We also didn’t want it to look brand spanking new.” Adding functioning Cremone bolts—a
decorative hardware first appearing in 18thcentury French homes and palaces—gives the cabinetry a sense of history and character. Thanks in part to their extensive and thoughtful preparation, the homeowners feel they accomplished their goals now that the home is complete. “At Christmas last year, we’d only been in the house a month and a half, but it felt good for our family to gather and be together,” says Terri. “Everybody had their own space, but it wasn’t overwhelmingly too much. The house still felt homey. We’re making new memories here.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

After years of an energetic television career in L.A., this Mizzou alum returns home to embrace the relaxed vibe and wide-open spaces of the Midwest.
By Jeanne de Lathouder
Photography Karen Palmer
Interior Design JCR Group
After 43 years in a Los Angeles studio dwelling, the thought of spreading out in a traditional St. Louis home sounded blissfully appealing to this California transplant. A graduate of Mizzou, she moved out to L.A. after college in 1976, where her father had been transferred. After working at CBS network for 15 years, she blossomed into a former co-producer for the game show The Price Is Right, where she worked for 28 years. Admittedly, after more than four decades, the L.A. traffic did her in—and eventually drove her back home.
However, being a relatively new resident of the area after all these years, she needed some help navigating the process. In 2016, she purchased a house in Creve Coeur for its idyllic location and sincere design, yet didn't move in until 2019. During the interim, she subscribed to St. Louis Homes & Lifestyles magazine to get a sense of the regional style and the interior designers in the area. Drawn to the work of Jenny Rapp, owner of JCR Design Group, she was especially impressed by Rapp’s fresh design aesthetic and love of color.
" When we met, I knew she was it," says the homeowner. "We developed a wonderful working relationship, although she often had to wrangle me in with some of my crazy ideas! But she did not disappoint and always gave me kudos for an idea that did work—plus, her staff is an awesome group of people."
Situated at the end of the street, the 3,850-square-foot home built in 1977 uniquely does not face the street. Instead, the front view frames a plush, sprawling lawn with the woods beyond, as well as a pond with a fountain. Clad in traditional brick with crisp molding below the soffit and fascia, the structure's original architecture befits its charming setting dotted with mature trees and quaint neighboring homes. The back of the house boasts a sunporch facing a pool—a luxury amenity unimaginable in the owner's former L.A. abode. But these days, being outside is her top priority.
Surrounding the pool and along the driveway, a stunning rock wall fashioned from an old, demolished church highlights carved stones with intricate designs, including wheat sheaves. The home's interior mimics the exterior's conventional aesthetic, yet the furnishings elicit surprise with pops of color everywhere— especially green—the owner's favorite hue.
" The home, as well as the client's style, is traditional," says Rapp. "She has beautiful furnishings and antiques, both collected and inherited, as well as wonderful art from her travels. She has great taste, loves color, and likes to have fun with design, so for us, the project was a joy!"
What star ted primarily as a renovation of the kitchen, laundry, powder room and guest-suite wing quickly bled into other areas, including the foyer and dining room. The design aesthetic unfolded naturally from the client's style and sense of whimsy. The kitchen components, including all the cabinetry, appear classic in terms of design, style and color, but bold accents give it a modern twist. Rapp adds, "You can see this in the green tile backsplash accenting the kitchen's adjacent beverage station, a wild jungle-themed powder room wallpaper enhanced with dark green millwork and vibrantly painted custom built-ins designed for a uniquely angled wall leading into the sitting room." In the dining room, the designer implemented a pale green grasscloth wallpaper that blends perfectly with the greens throughout the house.
Beginning their renovation in the foyer, Rapp first replaced the solid front door with a glass door to invite the glorious views inside. For privacy, she installed "smart glass" tied into a Lutron switch that makes the glass opaque at sunset and transparent at sunrise. Pristine wall moldings expand to the second floor, lending dramatic architectural interest to the foyer staircase. To polish the look, a patterned stair runner and a statement chandelier complement the furnishings and Asian-inspired paintings. "The design and selections for the kitchen, breakfast and laundry rooms, as well as the guest suite, were all done concurrently," notes the designer. "Working with the existing walls, we were still able to change the layout to provide better flow and organization. The laundry room was the one space where we did bump into the garage a few feet to accommodate our desired floorplan."
Adjacent to the kitchen, the beverage center, with an ice maker and wine fridge, features a dark green backsplash tile accenting the quartzite countertop. Mirrored cabinet doors above amplify the room's brightness, and roll-out shelves for the coffee maker and toaster oven allow them to be hidden when not in use. The powder room is adorned with Wildlife of Papua wallpaper from Mind the Gap, blending seamlessly with the dark green painted woodwork, an antique vanity and a decorative sink featuring a new quartzite countertop and a shaped backsplash. In the breakfast room, hutch-style cabinets surround a Samsung Frame TV. Brass mesh door fronts break up the solid wood look.
Punctuated by a statement chandelier, the foyer features pristine moldings that extend to the second floor, lending grand architectural character to the staircase. Opposite page: Tiled in hexagonal black tile, the laundry room boasts plenty of storage along with a convenient bench seat covered with a vibrant cushion that echoes the colorful palette of a painting above it.
Throughout, custom cabinetry fabricated by Classic Woodworking embodies a classic style, complemented by added bottom lip moldings, arched toe kicks and other details, which elevate the design and attention to detail. Quartzite stone countertops have become an immediate favorite for their alluring blend of neutrals, accented with subtle hints of green and terra cotta. "Initially, the client said she wanted green countertops, and I inwardly panicked," laughs Rapp. "But when we found this gorgeous stone, everyone was happy." The island pendants, the breakfast room chandelier and the kitchen/cabinet hardware all harmonize in a French antique brass finish. According to the homeowner, the island storage highlights the best part of the kitchen, where five shelves organize all her spices alphabetically.
Another standout feature includes an added vibrant green hallway bookcase. "I love cookbooks—and every single book in this case is indeed a cookbook," laughs the owner. “Jenny found the perfect green paint for the piece and matching wallpaper for the room. She also added a small, upholstered chair so I can read—and not cook! The picture lights at the top of the bookcase give it a sleek, illuminated look and one of the bottom cabinets has bi-fold doors that swing open to reveal a bench so I can work on the computer."
The original bathroom in the mother-in-law's quarters was a very utilitarian ADA-type bathroom, which the team opted to keep so their client could age in place. Rapp expanded the shower by adding a bench seat and curbless shower entry, and she created more storage with an added linen closet by stealing space from an adjacent bedroom closet. An eye-grabbing basketweave floor tile and a framed mosaic on the shower wall generate a compelling wow factor.
" The most impressive part is how the rooms flow together yet are completely different," notes the owner. "It's a calming and visually interesting walk through the house, and the design ended up making this an ideal place to have friends over while cooking. They were all wowed with the spice cabinet—it was just like the scene in Sex and The City where Carrie Bradshaw shows off her new closet—lots of oohs and aahs!"
Rapp adds, "This homeowner was a joy to work with, and we were all sad when the project came to an end. Our conversations were always lively, and our meetings typically ended with laughter and chocolate. And, of course, we loved returning for the unveiling of her perfectly organized and stocked cabinets!" See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.
Antique pieces, a patterned stair runner, and Asian-inspired paintings complement the foyer's classic aesthetic. The original guest bathroom includes an expanded zero-entry shower with bench seating. Basketweave floor tile and a framed mosaic on the shower wall add impactful visual interest. Opposite page: A small sitting area with bright green built-in cabinets and shelves houses the owner's massive cookbook collection. Picture lights at the top of the bookcase add charming detail as well as illumination, and one of the bottom cabinets with bi-fold doors swings open to reveal a bench for computer work.
A glorious Poynter hardscape creates this family’s dream event space for hosting friends and family.

Pool Design by Pool Tron
arly in the summer Michelle and Dean Millonas knew they had succeeded. It was the day one of their daughters had 15 friends over to swim in their recently installed pool. With the pool filled with his sister’s friends, their son and his friends decided they would head for the pickleball court.
Two and a half years ago, Michelle and Dean had moved to Town & Country from Des Peres to create just such a day. In Des Peres the configuration of their yard and the neighboring adjoining properties didn’t allow them to install a swimming pool. With three teenage children at the time, “We
wanted a place the kids wanted to be and wanted to invite their friends,” Michelle explains. “We wanted a place for everyone to create memories. I love that everyone comes here and there is something for them to do.”
T he “everyone” didn’t include just the Millonas children. While the plan for their new outdoor space began with a pool, it quickly morphed into an outdoor kitchen for Dean, who loves to grill; an outdoor living room/pool house complete with a woodburning fireplace and large-screen TV for watching sporting events, the pickleball court, an upscale fire pit between the pool and the pickleball court and an expansive, open deck connecting everything with the house. To soften the hardscape, Michelle
has transformed the deck and poolside into a ceramic pot paradise filled with lovely foliage and beautiful flowers.
While not necessar ily a plus for most buyers, the fact the home they purchased on a 1.2-acre lot had “zero flower beds; not a plant or a shrub anywhere,” according to Michelle, turned into a benefit. It made the entire yard a blank canvas.
With the pool as a first order of business, Michelle and Dean settled on Pool Tron as their contractor of choice. Knowing that the family had more than just a pool in mind, Pool Tron brought in Poynter Landscape Architecture and Construction to address the other outdoor spaces on the family’s wish list.
“ We had plans for the whole project
Our youngest daughter has a detailed eye,” Michelle notes.
“She noticed that from our breakfast room picture window, a deck railing would be right in the middle of the view of the yard.
before we started,” Michelle explains. “We had design meeting after design meeting. ‘I like this, I don’t like that.’ I would show them pictures I had seen online and then we would meet again. I was really involved in the whole process. I wanted to make sure it was what we wanted.”
“I t is not unlike building a house,” says Bob Wilhelm, vice president of sales and design for Poynter. “We try to find out short-term and long-term goals and sometimes a master plan can’t be implemented at once. You have to break it up into pieces to determine the best way to build based on how many people are in a family and how many people will be on hand for larger gatherings.”
You also have to improvise at times. Initially, the plan called for a tennis court rather than a smaller pickleball court. According to Town & Country regulations, however, only 25 percent of any property can be in hardscape, which includes the house, driveways, patios, pools and all that go with them. When Bob and his associates calculated the square footage of the Millonas project, the tennis court put them over the city guidelines, while a pickleball court did not.
The success of the entire project was the result of several different contractors working together, with Poynter acting as a general contractor and coordinating the project. To incorporate the firepit into the landscape, Pool Tron created an infinity edge at one end of the pool, so anyone seated around the firepit had a waterfall view. The pickleball court, created by McConnell & Associates, was sited to be viewed from both the firepit and the pool.
Everyone pitched in on the design of the project. “Our youngest daughter has a detailed eye,” Michelle notes. “She noticed that from our breakfast room picture window, a deck railing would be right in the middle of the view of the yard. She suggested that we drop the deck down or not have a railing at all.” As a result, the finished product features a California-style open deck.
Dean weighed in on the design of the outdoor seating area with a request for a wood-burning fireplace and outdoor TV. He also had an interest in the design of the outdoor kitchen. The plans called for almost everything you would find inside a house, according to Bob from Poynter, including hot and cold running water, a refrigerator and an icemaker. In addition to the grilling area already in the plan, Dean made a lastminute request for a griddle to be added to the design. Accommodating that request, meant reconfiguring some cabinetry, according to Bob.
There were things that looked good on paper but didn’t work as well during the construction. “I looked out and saw four workmen scratching their heads,” Michelle recalls with a laugh. The problem was that the edge of the long kitchen bar counter ran up against a stone retaining wall in the original plan. Reconfiguring the wall to include a tiered flower bed stopped the space from feeling cramped and “in the long run, made everything look better,” she says.
“I t’s nice when you can do things on the fly and make changes quickly,” says Bob, who likes to do the drawings for his projects by
hand. “It creates a sense that we are all working together on a project,” he believes.
Poynter Landscaping and Michelle also worked hand and hand on selection of the plants that tie everything together. Michelle requested season-long flowering shrubs with hydrangeas being her favorites for their long bloom times. Incorporated into the project are “Ruby Slippers,” with white blossoms that turn crimson as the season progresses, and “Little Quick Fire” which flowers earlier with white blossoms turning pink. To add height, Bob added trellises for climbing hydrangeas. Another long season shrub “Blue Muffin” viburnums sporting white flowers in spring and blue berries in autumn became part of the landscape. Perennials include long-blooming shasta daisies and “May Night” salvia. Tall “Karl Foerster” feather reed grass and shorter “Hamelin” fountain grass add movement and season-long interest.
Bob carefully selected arborvitaes, junipers and boxwoods for the overall size and shapes to add variety and screening throughout the yard. Around the outdoor installation, the boxwoods, in particular, were picked with an eye to the variety’s growth habit and mature size to allow for as little pruning and maintenance as possible.
Michelle takes over personally when it comes to container gardening, planting 55 colorful pots that decorate the deck and pool area. “I like color,” she says, “and I need plants that aren’t going to die if I don’t get
a chance to water them for a day.” Through “trial and error” she has come up with some favorites that can take the heat and are not fussy. She also grows herbs such as basil, oregano and spearmint in her containers to add to summer salads and drinks.
• Kimberly Queen ferns, which are far more sun tolerant than other ferns,
• Mandevilla vines for their ability to add height to pots and constant color
• Majesty palms for their height and tropical ambiance
• Diplandenia, a cousin to Mandevilla but clump forming, which she plants at the base of the palms
• Dragon wing begonias, which bloom non-stop throughout the season and can add color to shady areas
• Sun coleus with vividly colored foliage that adds additional color to floral mixes
• Lantana for brilliant colors, heat and drought tolerance and versatility to either mound or trail depending upon the variety
• Hibiscus for its tropical ambiance, brilliant blossoms and heat tolerance
To minimize the work of container gardening she often leaves larger plants in nursery pots, adding bricks to the bottom of the large decorative pots to prevent them from being blown over in storms and cut up pool noodles to bring the nursery pot up to the rim of the decorative container. Since 1977, the Garden has proudly hosted the Japanese Festival, which now attracts around 50,000 people each Labor Day Weekend. It is widely considered one of the largest and oldest festivals of its kind in the United States.
The festival results from prolific collaboration between the Missouri Botanical Garden and several Japanese-American organizations in St. Louis. This fruitful partnership provides an authentic experience highlighting Japanese music, art, dance, food and entertainment throughout the Garden.
With sumo wrestling, martial arts demonstrations, origami demonstrations, storytellers and dance performances, as well as an expansive food court, unique souvenirs and merchandise and candlelight walks in the Japanese Garden - the Japanese Festival offers a one-of-a kind Labor Day Weekend in St. Louis.
What’s in Bloom
There are plenty of beautiful and awe-inspiring sites on and off stage during the Japanese Festival. Keep an eye out for blooming asters, Garden phlox, waterlilies and sunflowers during this time.
Reduce and REUSE

Vermicomposting, or worm composting, is a hands-on method of getting rid of food scraps, and other natural materials, to create nutrient-dense fertilizer for your garden.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, composting is defined as, “the managed, aerobic (oxygen-required) biological decomposition of organic materials by microorganisms.” This decomposition then leads to the creation of compost which can be used as a natural fertilizer for your garden. Composting reaps many benefits including improving soil quality, supporting plant growth and protecting our local ecosystems. Additionally, by decomposing organic materials through composting, as opposed to in a landfill, home gardeners can help reduce the amount of methane released into the atmosphere.
Compostable items are divided into two categories: greens or browns. Greens are materials whose microorganisms encourage decomposition. These include fruits, vegetables and egg shells. Browns are dry ingredients that keep compost from becoming too wet and that encourage aeration. These items include shredded newspaper, tea bags, dried leaves and pet fur.
Earth Worm
Vermicomposting is a form of composting that uses worms. The earthworms and other microorganisms within the compost eat the organic matter and turn it into worm casings that can be used as a natural fertilizer. Starting your vermicomposting bin can be completed in a few simple steps: Create your Bin: The worm bin you select should have a tight-fitting lid and be dark to keep out light. Also, ensure the bin has enough room for worms, soil and the additional organic matter you’ll add throughout the composting process. Additionally, if you’re using a plastic bin, drill air holes in the upper sides of the bin and drainage holes at the bottom to allow for some breathing room.
Location is Key: When looking for the perfect spot, there are a couple of items to keep in mind. First, your worm bins should be kept either indoors in a dark area or a shaded spot outdoors. If you’re planning to store the bin outdoors, insulate your bin with blankets or straw during the winter months. The optimal temperature for your worms is between 59 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit.
Gather Your Materials
Worms: Only seven types of worms are suitable for vermicomposting; the most common of these is the ‘red wiggler’ (Eisenia fetida). Do not use worms that you find outside or that you buy at a bait shop; these worms aren’t suitable for decomposing your compost. To start, you’ll want about 1 lb. or 1,000 individual worms.
Bedding: When it comes to your worm bin’s bedding, the best materials include nonglossy newspaper, office paper, cardboard or dry leaves. These should be torn or shredded and then soaked for about 10 minutes. Once the bedding is done soaking, wring it dry until it feels like a damp sponge, then place it in the bed and lightly fluff it up. The bin should be filled about halfway with bedding and then a handful of soil.
Worm Food: For the worms’ food, they’re able to eat fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, paper filters, crushed eggshells and paper tea bags without staples. When you’re preparing your worm food/compost, chop up your scraps into smaller pieces to speed up decomposition. Avoid giving them citrus fruits, odorous foods like onion and garlic, meat, dairy products, greasy food, bones and pet waste.
Putting It All Together: Once you’ve prepped your bin and placed your bedding, add your worms to the top of the bedding and then add some food scraps. Each time you add more food scraps, cover the worms
with about two inches of bedding. This ensures that their environment is continually replenished as they decompose the previous matter. The worms will eat about 25% of their body weight each day, and they’ll reproduce quickly. Regularly check the bin to assess whether you need to increase the amount of food to accommodate more worms or decrease their food supply if they can’t keep up.
Time to Collect!: After three to six months, your vermicompost will be ready to harvest! The compost you’re collecting is the worm castings left behind by the worms as they break down their food and bedding. These castings are dark brown, tiny bits of round
materials that look similar to rich soil.
Put Your Fertilizer to Work!
Once you have your worm castings, add them to your garden beds to serve as a natural fertilizer. These castings will help improve soil aeration, drainage and moisture retention. They also reduce the potential for soil erosion and sequester carbon in the soil. You can also add the castings to a seed starting mix to encourage new plantings to grow.
LOUNGING WITH A PURPOSE
A home sitting room “where furniture went to die” got a marvelous makeover.
By Julie Brown Patton
Glendale residents Kalie and Tom Baucom’s 2018 home addition created a family room, powder room and primary suite. “But our sitting room became forgotten,” explains Kalie. “However, it was where my husband and I gravitated to for peace, and we wanted to elevate that experience.”
Consequently, the couple sought advice from interior designer Megan Temple, owner of Kirkwood-based Megan Temple Design. She agreed the 12x17 foot room was underutilized as a "holding space for leftover furniture,” but recalls immediately seeing its potential to be uniquely lively.
“ The Baucoms knew exactly what they wanted it to be, they just didn't know how to get there,” Megan explains. “They envisioned an adult space to read, play games, do puzzles or have quiet cups of coffee. The room’s narrow, requiring creative layout thinking.” In fact, the enclosed room is the first one entered through the front door, with a walk-through to the dining room.
During a seven-month process, Kalie says the sitting room was redone, except for flooring. “Our new wallpaper in the space is a showstopper, adding a nice punch without being overpowering. Additionally, Megan wisely chose a dining-height table that’s stunning, but extremely functional for our purposes, with stools great to sit on for games, visiting or propping your feet,” says Kalie. “Almost everything in the room feels special, intentional and fun.”
Photography by Karen Palmer Interior Design by Megan Temple Design
Megan says she presented three murals to the Baucoms. “We unanimously fell in love with the Rhapsody Mythical Mural by Osbourne & Little. It was colorful, happy and provided the perfect backdrop to build the rest of the room around.”
Calling her interior design style “a bit eclectic,” Megan says this sitting room was a perfect example of how she and her team love to "mix things up." So, they painted the fireplace and walls to match new furnishings and accessories.
She adds: “I'm thrilled with how everything came together, how everything has a purpose.
The caned chairs flanking the fireplace are for additional seating or pulling up to the game table when entertaining. The coral velvet stools have a dual function of seating or ottomans to kick your feet up when reading.”
Megan says they wanted to maximize seating and function in this small space. “I think we achieved that.”
T he designer says working with the Baucoms was a dream. “They knew what they wanted out of the space but were happy to let us take the lead. They trusted our vision, trusted the process and made quick decisions. It doesn't get any better than that.”
K alie confirms Megan’s upfront, detailed process was fun, and that their likes or dislikes were seamlessly blended from two, fairly different style preferences into a cohesive room she and Tom both adore.
“My husband was initially skeptical about using an interior designer, but after our experience with Megan and her team, he discovered he enjoyed the process,” Kalie assures. “We’re looking forward to tackling our next project with her.”

ESCAPE
After having to move away from their first dream home due to personal and job-related circumstances, the Bain family reached out to their original designer, Anne Marie Boedges, to create a new home to fill the gap in their lives left by their departure from the original.
Boedges recalls the relationship she has developed with Kelly Bain over the time of working for the couple: “We have gotten to know each other so well over the years, it's a blurry line for who inspires each other anymore!” she notes. “We truly have a friendship-style relationship but both respect each other's business woman mentality.”
Originally heavy with dark wood vanities against stark white walls that made the bathroom room feel cold and rigid, the inspiration for

this bathroom's design was to create a space that felt grounded in nature and comfort. “This personal sanctuary needed to be peaceful, joyful, calm and serene,” Boedges said, and she began the task of completely transforming the space into such.
Plain beige tile was replaced by earthy hexagon porcelain tile cut to mimic organic honeycomb hexagons and features veining reminiscent of tree roots. Bright white walls were replaced by soft eucalyptus-patterned wallpaper and vertical shiplap matching in the homeowners chosen eucalyptus green. The shiplap rises from the vanity countertops to the ceiling, framing two arched mirrors and continuing around the tub and windows, adding texture and vintage charm.
As per the clients’ excited request, eucalyptus green was the guiding color for the design of the room, being additionally featured in the wallpaper and shower tiles. These glossy
tiles lay vertically from floor to ceiling to add height and interest to the closed-in shower area.
With ‘aging-in-place’ in mind, the shower was designed with safety and ease of use at the forefront, with intentional extra space for grab bars to be installed later on if so desired by the owners. A freestanding tub, now used daily by the client, sits under the room’s primary window, providing a soft glow to relax under at the end of a long day.
The new custom cherry wood double vanity in a warm yet light cappuccino stain replaces the old, undersized set. Finally, a bumped-out drawer base in the center adds depth and functionality, while matte gold fixtures serve as subtle accents to the palette that tie the whole space together.
Every detail of the space was chosen with functionality, visual appeal and timelessness in mind, tailored to the clients’ own tastes
and needs. “We found out she really enjoys taking time for self care,” Boedges recalls. “Since she is a health care provider for so many people and has experienced a lot, she knows how important it is to fill your cup so you are physically able to care for others.”
The bathroom, which was the client’s “big finish” to the house’s renovations, shines even brighter alongside the adjoining main bedroom, both spaces designed to complement and reflect each other. The result is a personal retreat, influenced by nature, infused with warmth and tailored exactly to the client’s lifestyle. “For this longtime client, designing her master bathroom felt like a seamless conversation,” says designer Anne Marie Boedges. “We had developed such a strong understanding of her style that creating this tranquil, nature-inspired retreat was truly a joy.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

SERENITY IN THE SKY
Places to go, things to do and see and people who are leaving their mark on the world of style.
This wellness complex sits suspended on a platform in the mountains of Olang, Italy, creating a whole new level of relaxation.
Architect noa* Network of Architecture Manufacturers STACBOND
Photography by Alex Filz
Edited by Lily Stassi
When noa* Network of Architecture designed the original cantilevered swimming pool in 2016, the studio envisioned it as a rock stranded between earth and sky. In 2019 a new assignment was presented to the architects: to design a dedicated wellbeing extension to suit it. It was not an easy task for a building that had already found its symbol in the original swimming pool, yet this served as inspiration for the new project.
In an initial research phase, the team of architects examined the new starting situation and captured the house’s atmosphere in its natural context. From the observation of the surrounding landscape reflected in the swimming pool, the design concept came to life: to materialise what one sees mirrored on the surface of the water, as if the image were a transient rendering ready to be converted into reality.
Lukas Rungger, the architect in charge of the project and noa* founder, explains, "The essence of this project is the overturning of horizons, with the resulting effect of wonder for the observer. If you think about it, however, changing perspectives is a common exercise in wellness areas, where, depending on whether you are lying in the sauna, sitting in the relaxation area, or diving headfirst into
the pool, the views are constantly changing."
The two levels are characterised by a different treatment of privacy, with mainly exposed spaces above and protected spaces below. On the upper floor are two whirlpool baths, two panoramic showers and a changing room. The lower floor houses the foyer, which has access to the soft sauna, the Finnish sauna, a shower cabin, an ice mist shower and a third outdoor pool, from where one's gaze can sweep over the surrounding landscape.
The decision to work with inverted pitched roofs was both formal and functional: designers aimed to reproduce the architecture of a mountain village while still considering the space needed for the water purification system of the swimming pool and the seating tiers for the sauna. Moreover, the offset of the huts and the alternating orientation of the roof ridges allow a 360° view of the landscape, the real centrepiece of the project.
The choice of colors and materials is reminiscent of the mountain scenery: aluminium panels in natural brown tones suit the cabins, as well as the thickness of the slab, which is formed by a steel loadbearing beam structure. The brise soleil system that screens the windows is also of the same material and color. The floors are light beige ceramic, while the floor is oiled white oak in the relaxation room.
In this new assignment, designers were able to revive the imaginative drive from which the original design was born, designing a platform that, with its 20-metre overhang, marks a new floating outpost between heaven and earth—a project where the force of gravity seems to vanish to make way for unexpected scenarios. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.
Is upgrading your bath to a freestanding tub a wise investment, or is it just a craze?
RETREAT A Blissful
Classic
As a professional interior designer, I view freestanding bathtubs not as a passing trend, but as a timeless design feature that continues to resonate across eras and styles. Originating in the 18th century, particularly in the form of clawfoot tubs, these fixtures were long considered a hallmark of luxury in refined residences, predating the rise of built-in bath designs in the mid-20th century. Candace Wideman, Youtopia Designs.
While modern looking freestanding baths are having their moment right now, freestanding tubs have always been a staple in American bathrooms. They combine timeless elegance with modern luxury, making them a centerpiece in both classic and contemporary bathrooms. Their sculptural design and flexibility in placement add a sense of spaciousness and style. As homeowners continue to prioritize wellness and aesthetics, freestanding baths offer both a functional and indulgent bathing experience that stands the test of time.
Kerry Staley, Hamtil Construction LLC.
Definitely here to stay. Earlier versions of freestanding tubs can be found all over the oldest areas of St. Louis in the turn of the century clawfoot tub, usually out of cast iron. Generally the 1940s ushered in the era of the prefab tract house bathtub, which one sees in every suburban sprawl in Anywhere, USA and beyond. Personally, I love an alcove tub with a marble deck.
Jacob Laws, Jacob Laws Interior Design.
Stand-alone bathtubs are more than just a good soak; they are a functional and luxurious addition to a bathroom. They are not only functional but can also serve as a focal point. With various sizing options, stand-alone tubs fit both small spaces and large spa-like bathrooms. Their numerous benefits make them a classic!
Barb Collins, Barbara Collins Interior Design.
Edited by Maya Brenningmeyer
Freestanding bathtubs are a true classic! They have stood the test of time and will continue to do so. It's a statement piece in any bathroom. From Old World to contemporary stylings, who wouldn't love to enjoy a soak or hydrotherapy in one!
Becki Huels, Anne Marie Design Studio, LLC.
Craze
The freestanding tub is a craze that needs to go the way of crazes. It is more expensive, less functional and not as easy on the eyes as a tub and surround. Dick Busch, Dick Busch Architects.
