Jan Lambert Kruse

Jag arbetar med glas blåst i järntrådsformer, där jag låter järntråden bestämma formen på glaset. Jag låter färg och form samverka för att förmedla en känsla av frid. Den violetta färgen kan enligt urgamla traditioner hjälpa dem som söker mening i livet och andlig uppfyllelse: den kan vidga vårt sinne och koppla oss till ett högre medvetande. Det är därför den förknippas med själens omvandling och kanske varför världens filosofer ofta dras till den.

Kruse arbetar experimentellt med traditionella material och metoder. Glas och järn är båda traditionella material med mycket gamla anor och på många sätt varandras motsatser – det ena är fragilt och genomskinligt, det andra stabilt och hårt. Genom att kombinera dessa kvaliteter skapar Kruse ett univer- sum av lekfulla objekt. Han kombinerar en undersökande teknologi- och materialbaserad praxis med en stark känsla för skulptural formgivning och går metodiskt tillväga i sin undersökning av glasets och metallens konstnärliga möjligheter. Processen är nästintill alkemisk, undersökande och mynnar ut i föränderliga uttryck som uppstår när glaset möter elden för att sedan kombineras med metall. Processen laddas med mystik när naturkrafterna utmanas.

Jan Lambert Kruse (f. 1962) är en svensk konstnär utbildad inom glas och metall vid Konstfack i Stockholm, samt vid Pilchuck School of Glass, USA. Han har deltagit i flertalet solo- och grupputställningar både nationellt och internationellt och har utfört många offentliga konstverk.

I work with glass blown into iron thread cages, allowing the iron threads to determine the shape of the glass. I allow colour and shape to interact to convey a feeling of peace. According to ancient traditions, the colour violet can help those seeking meaning in life and spiritual fulfilment: it can expand our minds and connect us to a higher consciousness. It is therefore associated with transformation of the soul and is perhaps why philosophers throughout the world are drawn to it.

Kruse’s work is experimental and uses traditional materials and methods. Glass and iron are both traditional materials with a very long history and are opposites in many ways – one is fragile and transparent, while the other is robust and hard. By combining these qualities, Kruse creates a universe of playful objects. He combines exploratory, technology and material-based practice with a strong feel for sculptural design and takes a methodical approach to his exploration of the artistic potential of glass and metal. The process is almost alchemical, and exploratory, and culminates in variable expressions that emerge as the glass encounters the flame and subsequently combines with the metal. The process is charged with mysticism, challenging the forces of nature.

Jan Lambert Kruse (born 1962) is a Swedish artist who studied glass and metal at Konstfack in Stockholm, as well as studying at Pilchuck School of Glass, USA. He has participated in a number of solo and group exhibitions, both nationally and internationally, and has created numerous public artworks.
