The first time I encountered a spectacular PH product was at an office space very close to our current showroom. I saw an old PH Grand Piano and I noticed this piano as a statement piece and a piece of art... it was stunning, it was out of the box – it was the first time I saw a piano, again!

This is how my love for Poul Henningsen designed products started and our commitment to the design legacy of Poul Henningsen ensures that the piano and furniture collection designed by the world-renowned Danish designer is finally being brought to life, for the first time.

I was deeply fascinated by this grand piano even though I couldn’t play on it. I didn’t have the space at my own place to have it so basically, I needed to resell it as fast as possible.

More of the PH pieces are considered Danish cultural heritage pieces that were never put in any serial production at the time of the design almost 80 – 100 years ago and they have not been known to the market before we commenced development and production over the last few years.

I found the piano shop in this fantastic location in central Copenhagen where we have our large showroom today. I agreed that the piano shop would be able to sell it on my behalf and then we brought the PH Grand Piano in here – and it all developed and shaped up from there...

In that regard we are indeed talking about hidden gems that we are bringing to the market and today we combine our legacy with innovation.

The guiding principle for everything we do is the statement saying: “This world does not need more chairs!”

Instead, we want to do the extraordinary and break free from expectations: we want to contribute to a world less ordinary! It is part of the design legacy of the Poul Henningsen designed pieces that we represent as well as the principle for all our innovation and development of new pianos, audio and furniture products.

Besides, our functional artworks and statement pieces are always crafted for perfection. We take pride in true craftsmanship, which in combination with a timeless design philosophy guarantee the sustainable aspect of all pieces in our portfolio.

We enjoy the saying that many of our pieces belong to the future, and we know that they will be passed on to the next generation of the family and make a difference in everyday life.

We combine legacy and innovation in our product collection, and we strive to inspire and enhance the quality of life with timeless, inspiring, provocative, and unexpected statement pieces and functional artworks that become subjects of talking and play on all senses in life for daily joy and excitement.

Danish cultural heritage pieces finally coming to life

We are a young Danish brand, presenting some of the most intriguing furniture, pianos, and audio designs from Scandinavia, from the past, present and future. We aim to improve one’s daily life with functional pieces that are also works of art. ToneArt is rooted in the rich legacy of our design heritage in Scandinavia, starting with our exclusive license to produce and market all of Poul Henningsen’s incredible piano, furniture and mirror designs, created from the 1920s to the mid-1950s.

Our design house ToneArt, which also does business as PH Furniture and PH Pianos, is guided by our curiosity and love of learning. We work with some of the most intriguing designs ever made with the unexpected curves and materials of Poul Henningsen’s collections.

We also work with modern Scandinavian and international designers that break free from expectations, developing their new collections for production. Our criteria: each product should allow users to re-examine and re-imagine the status quo, and to renew the sense of wonder that comes with seeing something for the very first time.

The world-renowned Danish designer behind PH Furniture pieces and PH Pianos

Many of Poul Henningsen’s designs are as relevant today as they were in the first half of the 21st Century. Having become one of Denmark’s authorities on lighting theory, Poul Henningsen designed the PH lamp in 1925, a lighting icon inspired by the way natural light falls through the foliage of a tree, providing illumination that is devoid of obtrusive glare.

A winner of a gold medal at the World Fair in Paris in the 1920s, today the PH lamp is still in manufacture and in extremely high demand.

There is good taste and that is bad.”

POUL HENNINGSEN Forget all you know about Danish design and start again with Poul Henningsen or just the PH he used as his signature: simple, functional and to the point. Everything he produced from architecture and furniture to cultural critique and poetry follows this one single line of thought. Always liberating, always enlightening, PH pretty well invented modern Danish living.

Poul Henningsen was a true genius: in addition to lighting and furniture designs, he also managed to design several houses, a factory, a part of Tivoli, the interiors of two theatres, several pianos, all of which have become enduring design icons.

All the PH designs come with a storytelling and a design philosophy; PH had an intention and a meaning with everything he did in life and many times he created provocative, functional art pieces. It is difficult to put the PH Furniture pieces into a box and label them - and Poul Henningsen strongly disliked the idea of putting people and ideas into boxes or label them as one or the other or as good or bad.

Nature’s rules of geometry are the inspiration for Nybroe’s work

Nybroe has designed three series of wine glasses for the renowned glass design house Holmegaard/ Rosendahl.

His awardwinning Perfection series for Holmegaard is one of the most popular and successful wine glass series ever.

The series was named for Nybroe’s approach to design, and strikes a perfect balance between scientific ratios and aesthetic principles.

Tom Nybroe’s focus as a product designer is to create unsurpassed user experiences with each piece he creates. His design philosophy puts function first, and he accomplishes this by pushing the boundaries of expectation in form and material.

TOM NYBROE Award-winning designer Tom Nybroe has worked in many disciplines within the field of design. While he led a successful design agency, working with many leading, publicly traded companies, Nybroe was also running campaigns with and for famous visual and musical artists. It was this constant contact with arts work, along with his own interest in the sciences, that inspired his extraordinary approach.

Nybroe has designed the Copenhagen Collection for ToneArt including a Daybed, Console, Pouf, and Bench.

Their design language is curious and imaginative, thoughtful and unexpected

Having exhibited their work across the world including in Stockholm, New York, Milan, Seol, London, Berlin, Paris, Helsinki, and Los Angeles, they are now working with ToneArt on a new collection of pieces. “The task of designing something new to complement the existing collections designed by Poul Henningsen is both exciting and awe-inducing,” says Norheim. “Henningsen challenged the existing perception of design and objects in radical ways, and our goal in collaborating with ToneArt is to make new products that take Henningsen’s core values into the future through new design with our signature, and which bring people joy and good feelings.”

MORTEN & JONAS Morten and Jonas, a two-person design studio based in Oslo, Norway, design cutting-edge furniture and lighting pieces. Their design language is curious and imaginative, thoughtful and unexpected.

Using a collaborative process with technicians and manufacturers, and responding to the potential of chosen materials, Morten Skjærpe Knarrum and Jonas Norheim center their work on challenging the status quo that exists with processes, products, and relationships in the living world.

The studio of Morten & Jonas has designed a chair and sofa pair, where comfort and quality in detail and construction come in the first line, as well as a series of coffee tables, a daybed, and more.

Her style characteristically uses minimalistic shapes combined with smart use of colours, along with a touch of freshness and always originality

Caisa comes from a family of artists, which accounts for her fluency in so many artistic disciplines. Her father, Leif Stig Ericson, an interior architect, is the latest in a long line of furniture makers, and her grandmother was a painter.

Raised in the west of Sweden surrounded by large forests, Caisa Leifsdotter is naturally drawn to raw materials, and works with them as much as possible. That is not to say she is all “wood and stone:” some of her most recognizable pieces are her Psychedelic Mirrors, inspired by old melted-down vinyl records. Referring fondly to her mirrors, Caisa says, “I like to create the unexpected; pieces that are a bit too much.”

CAIA LEIFSDOTTER & LEIF STIG ERICSON Caisa Leifsdotter’s Scandinavian heritage is reflected in her sense of style. Her style characteristically uses minimalistic shapes combined with smart use of colours, along with a touch of freshness and always originality. From interiors and furniture design to sculpture, Caisa’s body of work is both provocative and thoughtful. Across multiple mediums, the common thread to be found is Leifsdotter’s special knack for creating balanced spaces through high contrast. Caisa seeks to enhance the contemporary interior by contrasting what is already present in the locale, either by juxtaposing traditional interiors with contemporary flair, or the converse.

Leifsdotter has designed many furniture pieces including the Wittorin sofa and chair and her Spine tables, now presented with ToneArt for the first time.

PH ARM CHAIR The PH Arm Chair features many of the hallmarks of Bauhaus design: it is the embodiment of an item of furniture created firstly for function but with consideration for the importance of form.

A multipurpose piece of furniture that embodies functionality and versatility

The PH Dining Table, designed in 1937, is heavily influenced by the Bauhaus design philosophies Poul Henningsen found to be so inspiring: it is a table that features simple chromed legs that make it appear to be floating almost on air, it is a design that whispers quiet perfection and does not need to shout to be heard.

The simple chromed steel legs are affixed at an angle to provide stability while also allowing guests sitting at the PH Dining Table optimal room for movement and to give maximum flexibility of seating arrangements.

In line with the superior attention to the small design details that PH felt so important, the legs of the PH Dining Table do not simply meet the ground at the bottom: rather the curved sphere at the base of the legs means that there is minimal connectivity with the floor. This further supports the visual illusion of a table that almost appears to float, creating a sense of lightness

Democratic seating

Designed in 1937, the PH Circle Table is a manifest of aesthetic design as well as function.

The shape of the table top is gently curved so that there is not a defined ‘head of the table, a reflection of Poul Henningsen’s democratic beliefs that he was designing furniture for the benefit of everyone to be seen and heard when gathering around it.

Inspired by the humble axe handle

The PH Axe Table, designed by Poul Henningsen in 1954, is a remarkable piece of furniture that embodies both functionality and aesthetics. Inspired by the humble axe handle, Poul Henningsen has utilized this familiar and tactile shape to provide the basis for the legs of the versatile table.

PH’s Axe Table brings warmth and a sense of symbolic strength

As an extra option, the PH Axe Table is available with a removable wood cover in the middle of the table top. Upon removing the wood cover, PH 3 ½ - 2 ½ Table Lamp in a special construction with cable outlet below the frame can be installed and plugged in to the pre-installed cable that is hidden into one of the table legs.

PH BOARD TABLE

Every thinker, creator or director deserves the best workspace in order to realise the outcome of their ideas and thoughts

Poul Henningsen designed this unique table together with the PH Axe Table in 1954 and named it the “Board Table for warehouse workers” in order to make a signal and add an opinion to this specific workspace or space for gathering, communication, etc.

The PH Board Table is made with the same axe handles as legs like on the PH Axe Table and it offers a very solid, yet sophisticated construction.

Together with the specially made PH Table Lamps by the Louis Poulsen lighting company, the PH Board table is just a very unique statement piece that offers sophistication, refinement and the extraordinary feeling to any meeting and board room.

PH used all his extensive lighting skills and so created a mirror that provided backlit illumination and a sense of luxury, as well as being a practical essential intended for use every day.

Ever the ‘problem solver’, motivated to make furniture and items for the home that bettered what had gone before, Poul Henningsen created the mirror of future back in 1939 and this piece can be considered part of his ‘Bauhaus inspired furniture’ also from the same decade.

The PH Bow Grand Piano is unlike any other in the world. It is inspired by organic arcs and curves found in nature, and combines the best of tradition with a depth of imagination and understanding of the most exquisite instrument.

The PH Bow Grand Piano is constructed around a lid of four organic flowing ‘waves’ of timber. It bears resemblance to the Sydney Opera House, an architectural masterpiece designed by fellow Danish designer, Jørn Utzon.
