About us
Danish cultural heritage pieces finally coming to life We are a young Danish brand, presenting some of the most intriguing furniture, pianos, and audio designs from Scandinavia, from the past, present and future. We aim to improve one’s daily life with functional pieces that are also works of art. ToneArt is rooted in the rich legacy of our design heritage in Scandinavia, starting with our exclusive license to produce and market all of Poul Henningsen’s incredible piano, furniture and mirror designs, created from the 1920s to the mid-1950s.
Inspired by Poul Henningsen and the principles he stood for, all of the designs in our house start with the function of the piece. Each design must distil down to what is essential in the piece. Then, being inspired by the beauty of materials, its form is reimagined for the demands of today and dreams of tomorrow.

Modern interpretation of old classics Our design house ToneArt, which also does business as PH Furniture and PH Pianos, is guided by our curiosity and love of learning. We work with some of the most intriguing designs ever made with the unexpected curves and materials of Poul Henningsen’s collections. We also work with modern Scandinavian and international designers that break free from expectations, developing their new collections for production. Our criteria: each product should allow users to re-examine and re-imagine the status quo, and to renew the sense of wonder that comes with seeing something for the very first time.

Mission We hold the exclusive and worldwide license – on behalf of the family of Poul Henningsen – to produce, market and sell all pianos, furniture and mirrors designed 80 – 100 years ago by the world-renowned Danish designer Poul Henningsen. The first time I first encountered a spectacular PH product was at an office space very close to our current showroom. I saw an old PH Grand Piano and I noticed this piano as a statement piece and a piece of art... it was stunning, it was out of the box – it was the first time I saw a piano, again! I was deeply fascinated by this grand piano even though I couldn’t play on it. I didn’t have the space at my own place to have it so basically, I needed to resell it as fast as possible. I found the piano shop in this fantastic location in central Copenhagen where we have our large showroom today. I agreed that the piano shop would be able to sell it on my behalf and then we brought the PH Grand Piano in here – and it all developed and shaped up from there...

This is how my love for Poul Henningsen designed products started and our commitment to the design legacy of Poul Henningsen ensures that the piano and furniture collection designed by the world-renowned Danish designer is finally being brought to life, for the first time. More of the PH pieces are considered Danish cultural heritage pieces that were never put in any serial production at the time of the design almost 80 – 100 years ago and they have not been known to the market before we commenced development and production over the last few years. In that regard we are indeed talking about hidden gems that we are bringing to the market and today we combine our legacy with innovation. The guiding principle for everything we do is the statement saying: “This world does not need more chairs!”

Poul Henningsen “We do not desire a new form unless it is dictated by the objective” All the PH designs come with a storytelling and a design philosophy; PH had an intention and a meaning with everything he did in life and many times he created provocative, functional art pieces. It is difficult to put the PH Furniture pieces into a box and label them - and Poul Henningsen strongly disliked the idea of putting people and ideas into boxes or label them as one or the other or as good or bad. As he said: “There is no such thing as bad taste. There is good taste and that is bad.”

Forget all you know about Danish design and start again with Poul Henningsen or just the PH he used as his signature: simple, functional and to the point. Everything he produced from architecture and furniture to cultural critique and poetry follows this one single line of thought. Always liberating, always enlightening, PH pretty well invented modern Danish living. Poul Henningsen was a true genius: in addition to lighting and furniture designs, he also managed to design several houses, a factory, a part of Tivoli, the interiors of two theatres, several pianos, all of which have become enduring design icons.

Poul Henningsen The world-renowned Danish designer behind PH Furniture pieces and PH Pianos
Many of Poul Henningsen’s designs are as relevant today as they were in the first half of the 21st Century. Having become one of Denmark’s authorities on lighting theory, Poul Henningsen designed the PH lamp in 1925, a lighting icon inspired by the way natural light falls through the foliage of a tree, providing illumination that is devoid of obtrusive glare. A winner of a gold medal at the World Fair in Paris in the 1920s, today the PH lamp is still in manufacture and in extremely high demand.

Poul Henningsen and the PH Chair A chair inspired by an older chair in turn inspiring a somewhat newer chair. And then back to the roots again. Poul Henningsen admired the classic bentwood furniture by Thonet and one of his favorites was the armchair 209 (top left in the picture). In 1932 Henningsen designed the PH Chair (top right) highly inspired by the Thonet chair. And 30 years later Poul Kjærholm designed the PK12 (bottom left), and it’s easy to see the resemblence with the chair by Poul Henningsen.

Poul Henningsen: a multi artist We all know Poul Henningsen created a lot of lamps, but calling him a designer of lamps is nothing but a huge understatement. He designed so much more, such as: furniture, pianos, wind kites and at least one self-propelled bike. Parallel of this he was also a writer, film maker, politician and a frantic agitator.

Poul Henningsen furniture PH Furniture is the art of interiors: liberated designs that are forever functional. PH Mirrors The PH Mirror was designed in 1939 by Poul Henningsen and used to be produced by Louis Poulsen. We acquired the license a few years from Louis Poulsen for production and sales. The PH Mirrors are available in 3 sizes (more could be added) and come with the same Poul Henningsen signature colors as also being used for the PH lighting products. The covers for the PH Mirrors are being made in aluminum, brass and copper. The PH Mirrors are installed with LED and sensor activation of on/off, dimming and brightness of the lighting.

Glass ball speakers We are also producing unique glass ball speakers and furniture pieces designed by contemporary Scandinavian designers. Our groundbreaking designed glass ball speakers build on the same design philosophy: make the function transparent, thereby also creating a unique design sculpture of the absolutely best high fidelity sound quality on the market.

PH Furniture The Collection The PH Furniture pieces are not typical Scandinavian designs, and they are also distinct from other design styles. So, it is also difficult to find a common denominator for our customers, however, customers for the iconic, functional art pieces designed by PH are curious people, people who appreciate diversity and the lightness of being, people who appreciate something that stands out, that can be provocative and that inspire and talk to us. Poul Henningsen's innovative process extended beyond lighting and into the realm of furniture design, particularly with his exploration of steel tube furniture in the early to mid-20th century. Inspired by German Bauhaus design theories, PH became a pioneer of functionalism in Denmark. Poul Henningsen believed in prioritizing function over form or ”utility before beauty”, observing in 1927 that ”We do not desire a new form unless it is dictated by the objective”.

Colorful furniture Concerning the wooden furniture pieces, PH felt it important to use colours to allow a piece of wooden furniture communicate and be more inspiring. The full collection of furniture pieces designed and crafted back in 1920 for the wedding couple was painted and the story goes that Poul Henningsen painted all the wooden furniture items at his private home as well to make them more interesting. So, the Poul Henningsen designs are old design pieces – some of the PH Pianos and PH Furniture pieces were designed more than 100 years ago but only produced in a single piece or in a few prototypes. For the first time in history, the old Poul Henningsen designed pianos and furniture pieces are now in real production and can be purchased.

Light of being Poul Henningsen's furniture designs often convey an exquisite illusion of weightlessness, with slender supports and delicate lines that create a sense of ethereal grace. Origins of Steel Tubes for the Poul Henningsen furniture designs In the 1930s, Poul Henningsen's steel tube furniture designs were revolutionary. These pieces boasted distinctive, bold, and elegant shapes, quite unlike the traditional wooden furniture of the time. The hallmark of his steel tube furniture was its curvaceous form, which, while artistically appealing, presented a formidable challenge in manufacturing. In 1932, Poul Henningsen presented a collection of eight steel tube furniture designs at the Danish Fair for Industrial Design and Products in 1932. PH’s steel tube furniture received some attention in the media because of its innovative character and more importantly because its distinctive, bold yet still elegant shapes were created in steel rather than wood. PH’s steel tube furniture did not, however, come to a point of a mass production, nor was it marketed during his lifetime. Perhaps this was due to the fact that the commercial market was not ready for what was possibly perceived as “fancy, modern and avant-garde” furniture at the time.

Craftsmanship The Poul Henningsen pieces are all extremely difficult to craft and produce, even today. In the 1930’s the steel tube furniture collection could only be bent in hand by strong blacksmiths. Therefore, these amazing, timeless pieces were never put in production. Even today, with all the technological equipment, the bending process of the Poul Henningsen steel tube pieces is extremely difficult and only a steel tube bending company in Switzerland can do the bending in Europe.

Bending Steel Tubes - A Formidable Challenge The primary obstacle lay in the bending of steel tubes. For some of PH designs, these tubes needed to be bent counter-clockwise in multiple directions, a feat that was incredibly difficult to achieve with the technology available during that era. Poul Henningsen's vision exceeded the capabilities of the manufacturing processes of the time, making mass production of these furniture pieces nearly impossible. In their early days, the steel tubes required for Poul Henningsen's visionary furniture were meticulously crafted in limited numbers by highly skilled blacksmiths. These craftsmen possessed the strength and precision needed to bend these steel tubes, an extremely challenging task that added to the rarity and uniqueness of each piece. Today, you can find some of these exceptional creations, such as the iconic Snake Chair and Snake Stool, showcased in the permanent collection of the Danish Museum of Design.

Production process – closely guarded secret Even in the present day, the art of bending Poul Henningsen's steel tubes remains a remarkable challenge, a testament to the visionary nature of his designs. Astonishingly, only a handful of factories worldwide possess the expertise required to master this intricate process. ToneArt Interior, dedicated to preserving the integrity of these iconic designs, discovered one such factory nestled in Switzerland mountains. The intricacies of this production process are guarded as closely as a precious secret, to the extent that even ToneArt representatives are not permitted to witness the method first-hand. This level of secrecy underscores the extraordinary craftsmanship required to bring Poul Henningsen's steel tube furniture back to life, ensuring that each piece retains the same level of artistry and innovation as the originals.

PH Snakes At the heart of this remarkable collection are the iconic Snakes – the Snake Chair and the Snake Stool. PH Steel tube tables Poul Henningsen favoured the idea that there should be clear delineation between what is being carried and what is carrying across all his furniture designs. As such, PH was committed to the creation of furniture with legs that are as minimal as possible and that they themselves are carefully crafted to be aesthetically pleasing. PH explored the idea of furniture that appeared almost to be ‘floating’ and where the legs of his furniture designs are visible, they should be an interesting feature in themselves. The simple chromed steel legs of PH Dining Table are affixed at an angle to provide stability while also allowing guests sitting at the Table optimal room for movement and to give maximum flexibility of seating arrangements. The PH Lounge Table draws inspiration from nature. Its delicately shaped legs resemble tree roots, evoking the calming feeling of being outdoors. Just like nature, this table boasts resilience and strength. The use of natural materials, such as oak for the tabletop finish, enhances the sense of connection to the environment. PH wooden furniture While Poul Henningsen is best known for his design of the steel tube furniture collection in the 1930’s, he actually designed more wooden furniture pieces. In 1920 he was asked to design a whole collection of wooden furniture pieces as a wedding gift to a young Danish couple and every piece was made with some very characteristically shaped, thin brass legs that make the body float and provide a clear distinction between what is carrying and what is being carried. These old pieces can still be found in the private collection of a family in Denmark. Today, more of the wooden furniture pieces from 1920 have been put in production according to the original design and the whole collection is available both with wooden legs or the legs manufactured in solid brass. The luxurious finish with brass will patina beautifully as the years go by. Poul Henningsen frequently observed that the solution to many common design problems in furniture were to be found in nature. Examples of this idea can be seen not only in the PH lamp, but also in the table designs.

PH wooden furniture Poul Henningsen commenced the furniture design in 1919 with the beautiful PH Dressing Table in wood and eight thin wood legs and continued in 1920 with a complete set of wooden furniture pieces for a Danish wedding couple. The wooden furniture pieces made up a full set of interior and furniture including bed, dressing table, wardrobes, sofa, drawers, stools, etc etc. and all pieces were drawn with wood legs but made with the iconic brass legs. Today we are producing a number of those pieces both with wood and the solid brass legs and all the old pieces are still in daily function at an apartment in Copenhagen belonging to family members of the wedding couple back in 1920.

PH Mirrors PH used all his extensive lighting skills and so created a mirror that provided backlit illumination and a sense of luxury, as well as being a practical essential intended for use every day. The modern mirror has come to be regarded as one of life’s essentials and for this reason has evolved in to something that is considered worthy of ‘good design’. Ever the ‘problem solver’, motivated to make furniture and items for the home that bettered what had gone before, Poul Henningsen created the mirror of future back in 1939 and this piece can be considered part of his ‘Bauhaus inspired furniture’ also from the same decade. As a result of a debate whether PH Mirror is more of a lighting product or Interior piece, ToneArt agreed with Louis Poulsen, a historical manufacturer of PH Mirrors, to obtain the worldwide rights for producing and selling PH Mirrors. These illuminated mirrors now serve as a bridge, seamlessly connecting the realms of lighting and interior aesthetics, offering a unique and versatile design element.

The back of the screen is available in 3 different metals: aluminum, brass or copper, in a brushed finish. The surface is untreated which means that the surface will change over time and develop a patina. The back of the screen is, additionally, available in 5 different colours also known from the PH lamps: black, white, yellow, green or red. The PH Mirror always comes with drawstring and with the elegant signature of Poul Henningsen engraved in the glass of the mirror.

Work of the piano master Bringing beauty to light PH had the greatest respect for the work of the piano master, and he advocated strongly against turning the piano into a piece of furniture. Therefore, PH set himself the task of peeling away the cabinet parts that hide the piano action and the musical instrument and all its many beautiful technical details and components. In other words, PH wanted to open the musical instrument and bring its beauty out into the light because only then, it is possible to see the real value of a piano and its musical qualities. So, instead of the heavy (black) cabinet box of a traditional piano, PH was the first designer who used transparent materials to unveil all the musical components and the big, genuine work of the piano master.

I have great respect for traditions that work well, such as those that prevail in the piano industry. I merely set myself the task of peeling everything away that originates with non-experts and bunglers, by which I mean architects and artistcraftsmen. The instrument must bear the stamp of the piano maker's work, not that of some cabinetmaker who just happened to be passing. In reality, trying to turn a piano into a piece of furniture is every bit as hopeless a task as camouflaging a violin as a workbox.’’

Cocentric Lounge Table Designed by the Norwegian duo Morten & Jonas for ToneArt, the Cocentric Lounge Table is a solid wooden piece with thin, clear lines that together create a beautiful sculptural piece where the craftsmanship of the carpenters is in full view. The Cocentric Lounge Table sits on four round legs that are set partway out of the circular wooden table rim. It is a table that requires excellent craftsmanship, and all joints must be perfectly aligned, including the grain of the wood. The table has a solid stone slab set into the circular table frame. This elegant table references the playful and forward-thinking Scandinavian design traditions. It is a complement to the Gallant Armchair and Sofa, also designed by Morten & Jonas for ToneArt.

Tom Nybroe Award-winning designer Tom Nybroe has worked in many disciplines within the field of design. While he led a successful design agency, working with many leading, publicly traded companies, Nybroe was also running campaigns with and for famous visual and musical artists. It was this constant contact with arts work, along with his own interest in the sciences, that inspired his extraordinary approach. Nature’s rules of geometry are the inspiration for Nybroe’s work. He is fascinated with the rhythmical proportions found in nature, particularly those expressed in design and mathematics as the Golden Ratio. By observing nature-made proportions, Nybroe applies those principles directly to the formation of his design output

Copenhagen Console The Copenhagen Console by Tom Nybroe is designed for the dining room, the study or any room requiring a beautiful furniture piece that provides space for the things you need nearby. Offering smart, modern storage, the Copenhagen Console is a cleanlined piece of furniture, that celebrates the innate beauty of contrasting materials. Wooden cabinetry and leather-wrapped drawers are counterbalanced by the fine-lined solid brass legs which beautifully transition from round to angular shapes. A tempered top plate in tinted glass provides a perfect complement and surface for one’s collected treasures. The console is designed in modules from 3 to 6 sections and can be customized to suit the individual’s preference for colors and materials.
