In February, the Sopris Sun will celebrate its fifth birthday. We couldn’t be more excited.

Each year, the paper has gotten better. Our content has continued to improve, our readers have told us how much they like the changes, our new website is state-of-the-art, and our support from our advertisers continues to grow. What we need now is the financial support of the community.

For the first time, The Sopris Sun has received a substantial grant ($5,000) from the Anschutz Family Foundation to help us achieve some of our operating goals. We are very grateful, not just for the grant, but for the show of support from a major Colorado foundation. While not a matching grant, it is a grant that we are asking the community to help us match. The challenge for us is to show that we can raise another $5,000 from the community to be able to satisfy our grant goal.

Next year shapes up to be an exciting year for Carbondale. The Sopris Sun is already planning its coverage. Highway 133 construction has begun and will have a major impact on our town. In the spring, four trustee seats will be open (one of which is term-limited). We will once again be hosting a town trustee candidate forum together with the Chamber of Commerce and KDNK. A major new medical facility will be opening and who knows what is going to happen with any and all other rumored projects in town. With your

bus idea worth pursuit Dear Editor: I am a resident of River Valley Ranch in Carbondale and occasionally use the Roaring Fork Transit Authority (RFTA) bus service. I admire the high-tech Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) concept that has been developed at a national level, and which RFTA is implementing regionally.

One component of the BRT concept — as it applies to Carbondale — is to replace the routing of the main-line “Valley” buses through downtown Carbondale with a shuttle bus that operates entirely within Carbondale to transport riders to the BRT station on Highway 133 near Highway 82. This “circulator” shuttle bus significantly reduces the transit times on the bus service along Highway 82 between Glenwood Springs and Aspen. That is good in itself, and it also presents an opportunity for expanded bus service within Carbondale similar to that provided by local RFTA buses in Glenwood Springs and Aspen.

That opportunity is being lost because RFTA has not expanded the places in Carbondale served by the shuttle bus. The Carbondale trustees seem to have overlooked the potential benefits of expanded local service in making relatively trivial complaints about the startup of the new service

(as reported in the Sopris Sun of Dec. 12).

The shuttle bus currently runs every 15 minutes, following the same route as the Valley bus did until recently. Basically, this route serves only a few blocks of the downtown area, along Main Street between Highway 133 and Sixth Street.

I recently drove an expanded route from the RFTA Park & Ride facility that included the current stops, plus stops at Third Street and Main, the new library, the Third Street Center, Carbondale Elementary School, and various potential stops along Highway 133 between there and the start. This route would serve the main public buildings in Carbondale, more of the downtown, and more high-density residential areas. Making several 15 second stops for imaginary passengers and driving below the speed limits, I drove this route in about 13 minutes.

This might not leave enough spare time to compensate for occasional delays and to give bus drivers break time. However, one advantage of buses over rail transit is that their routes, and the size of the buses, can be tested and varied. The shuttle service could be provided more economically with a smaller bus, and the route could be adjusted with no more capital investment than signs at stops. I hope that Carbondale’s officials will pur-

Angel Tree thanks Dear Editor: This year the Angel Tree project was divided by communities to handle locally. As president of the Mt. Sopris Rotary Club, I was contacted by the River Center to run the Carbondale area. I approached the Carbondale morning Rotary Club to see if they would partner with us to undertake the project.

This past Saturday, gifts were distributed to 213 local children. Countless people spent a number of hours to make this year’s project a success. I want to thank the following people and businesses for their help.

Pot a no brainer; voters nuke fire-tax hike An interesting year: 2013

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer Even for Carbondale — which in recent years saw residents slap a 20 cent fee on paper bags at City Market in order to protect the environment, and hammered shoppingcenter developers so badly they have yet to return – the year 2013 was an interesting one.

While other towns and counties dithered, dathered and weaseled around with whether to allow licensed stores to sell marijuana, the Carbondale Board of Trustees barely nodded to each other before plowing into an eventual nine-month discussion that would result in ordinances that allow up to five “pot shops” to sell limited amounts of the still federally-banned plant in 2014.

Meanwhile, a special taxing district (in this case the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District), got the word from voters loud and clear they did not want to pay more money in the form of increased property taxes, even though it could mean emergency response times might be slower than in previous years.

On a sunnier note, Carbondale Mountain Fair started charging for folks who want to enjoy the festivities under private shade tents; town trustees gave an internationally known sculptor the old library building for $1 a year so he can display his work under the auspices of a museum; and the 100+year-old Thompson House received federal historic designation status.

JANUARy: Veteran launches Purple Star Former Marine Corps. Sgt. Adam McCabe founded the Purple Star Veterans and Families non-profit to help returning military veterans adjust to life off the battlefield. McCabe served in Iraq and received the Purple Heart for his injuries there, plus several commendations for bravery in combat. He told The Sopris Sun that Purple Star was the brainchild of former Carbondale resident John Henry.

Thompson House makes the list The Colorado Historical Preservation Review Board recommended listing the Thompson House on the National Register of Historic Places, which the National Park Service did later in the year.

FEbRUARy Town goes fat Carbondale turned February’s First Friday into Fat Friday, and invited everyone to put on their Mardi Gras best for the first time and parade down Main Street. Parade the town did, with more than 20 floats representing businesses and non-profits.

Folks speak out on TD Protests over proposed natural gas drilling on Thompson Divide southwest of Carbondale were in the headlines throughout the year. In late February, the Pitkin County Commissioners invited the public to a forum on the issue at town hall, which attracted a crowd that spilled out into the lobby. The meeting lasted more than three hours and dozens of people spoke, including longtime local resident John McBride, who told The Sopris Sun “Wow. I’ve been to a lot of environmental meetings, and I’ve been to a lot of county commission meetings. And I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Finance director retires

The same week, the Wilderness Workshop filed a similar but separate appeal to the state director of the BLM on the decision, which came out of the Colorado River Valley Field Office in Silt.

She told The Sopris Sun that the population in 1982 was about 1,700-1,800 (compared to 6,000 now), and much of what’s in Carbondale now was not here then, including the “new” town hall, the recreation center, the Cowen Center, La Fontana, River Valley Ranch and North Face Park.

The Crystal Theatre successfully completed its month-long, $70,000 drive to raise funds to switch from film to digital projection. Donors included Aidan Knaus, 12, who brought in approximately $50 in change and bills he raised selling candy at school, and 9-year-old Noelle Shield-Taylor, who set up a lemonade stand under the Crystal Theatre campaign banner at Fourth and Main streets. Crystal Theatre owners Bob and Kathy Ezra told the Sopris Sun that more than 500 individuals and businesses, some from as far away as Chicago, made donations. The switch to digital came because the movie industry is phasing out the use of film.

DEA busts clearwater resident

APRIl The Colorado Energy Office chose the non-profit CLEER to lead a federally funded, $225,000 pilot project to promote adoption of clean vehicle fuels in selected communities across Colorado.

Led by federal DEA agents, several law enforcement agencies swarmed a house on Clearwater (in Crystal Village), and later arrested a man who lived there in part of a Western Slope roundup that has resulted in 31 arrests for alleged drug dealing and related crimes.

JUNE TSc reaches energy milestone For the entire week of June 3–9, the Third Street Center became a net electricity generator, getting more than 100 percent of its operating electricity from the sun and using no natural gas for the first time in the building’s history. “In short, the building ran entirely on renewables and energy efficiency,” said a press release. Building manager Mark Taylor and the staff of CLEER observed the milestone while reviewing Third Street energy use on the Energy Navigator, a system that records data about energy use in public buildings throughout Garfield County.

OcOS looks at education The newly formed Our Children, Our Schools (OCOS) started gathering input on what students and the public like about local schools. More information about the group is available at carbondaleconversation.org.

JUly mountain Fair sells shade Faced with escalating costs and at times escalating tempers, Mountain Fair held its first-ever lottery for 20 shade-tent spaces. A CCAH newsletter said members chosen in the lottery would be charged $100 for a 10’X10’ spot to pitch their open-sided tents during the three-day party; non-members will pay $125. Money raised will go toward Mountain Fair creating a “shade structure” or structures that will be put up in years to come to create shade for everybody.

In recent years, the tents have been stuck side-by-side starting about 100 feet east of the Sopris Park gazebo and can obstruct pedestrian traffic from the back of the crowd to the front. The spots are so coveted, Mountain Fair set up sort of a “land run” on Thursday nights before the fair and tenters made a mad dash the claim their turf when the signal was given. In recent years, the rush became “progressively volatile,” said CCAH/Mountain Fair Director Amy Kimberly.

New library opens

Downtown’s got a brand new flag

Hundreds of folks attended Carbondale Branch Library dedication ceremonies on the morning of July 20, and then eagerly entered the doors to check out the 13,000square-foot building and all that it has to offer. The Garfield County Public Library District built the $5.2 million structure after residents established the special taxing district in 2006. All six towns in the district – Carbondale, Glenwood Springs, New Castle, Silt, Rifle and Parachute – received new or expanded libraries. Shannon Muse’s “Pillars of Light” public art piece was chosen for the library entrance. Other pieces of functional and decorative art include pieces from John Hoffmann, Mark Cezark, Travis Fulton, Robert Stone, John Ackerman and staff, Dave Struempler and the Burgeon Group from Arizona. James Surls is loaning the library one of his sculptures.

Joe Scofield and Dave Scruby bought a new American flag to replace H.P Hanson’s 45-star, 100-year-old version that they hang over Main Street every Fourth of July. The new flag measures 12’X18’ feet, nearly the same size as the old one.

Fire district steps up The main Carbondale fire station became the command center for the Red Canyon wildfire, which broke out east of Highway 82 between the CMC turnoff and Glenwood Springs. Dozens of federal fire fighters pitched their tents at Carbondale Middle School, whose parking lot was turned into a staging area.

Wille starts Plant a Row El Jebel resident Kim Doyle Wille founded the Plant a Row to End Hunger project to provide organic produce to those who could not otherwise afford it. She established a network of gardens or gardeners from Aspen to Rifle, and Gypsum, Eagle and Paonia (including participants at the Third Street Center community garden and the Good Seed Community Garden at the Orchard church).

Trustees OK solar array The Carbondale Board of Trustees voted 5-1 to allow a 170-foot-long solar array at the entrance to the Nature Park (aka Delaney dog park) but not before John Foulkrod invoked one of the environmental movement’s most quoted songs. “We’re paving paradise to put up a parking lot,” said Foulkrod, paraphrasing one of Joni Mitchell’s best-known songs. “ … we’re destroying one of (the most) beautiful things we have left in town.”

The array was one of the three the trustees authorized in a power purchase agreement between the town, Sunsense Solar, Excel Energy and an investor who will receive tax credits in exchange for paying for the arrays. The Nature Park array will generate enough electricity to power the water treatment plant at the park. The other two arrays are located on the Third Street Center roof and at the town’s public works office on Highway 133.

cDOT finalizes 133 plan The Colorado Department of Transportation finalized its plans for reconstructing Highway 133 for two miles from Highway 82 to Meadowood. Those plans include a roundabout at the intersection of Highway 133 and Main Street. Project construction is expected to start in April and continue well into the year.

Carbondale trustees, guided by attorney Alison Eastley, spent much of 2013 nailing down dozens of details surrounding the defacto legalization of small amounts of marijuana, such as the minimum distance the “pot shops” can be located from schools and each other.

Trustee John Foulkrod recused himself from marijuana ordinance discussions because he manages property rented to a medical marijuana operation. Trustee Elizabeth Murphy did not attend the meeting at which the other trustees voted 5-0 on a voice vote to approve the licensing ordinance. At a public hearing, no members of the public spoke against the proposed ordinance.

OcTObER Education enthusiasts speak out More than 150 parents and community members attended the Re-1 school district’s first “visioning process” meeting in Carbondale. “It was sort of like a pep rally,” said Re-1’s Chief Academic Officer Rob Stein. “I’ve never before seen crowds of people cheering for academic choices.”

SEPTEmbER c’dale joins reefer club Carbondale joined what at the time were 10 other Colorado municipalities by approving a retail marijuana-licensing ordinance that allows stores to sell marijuana to customers 21-years-old and older. Carbondale Trustee Frosty Merriott told The Sopris Sun the approval reflects the will of Carbondale voters. “ … 71 percent voted for Amendment 64,” said Merriott, referring to a state constitutional amendment approved by voters in 2012 that allows for the possession and sale of limited amounts of mari-

Secret revealed on Dec. 31 “It’s a secret,� according to vocalist Olivia Pevec.

The band that she founded, formerly known as All the Pretty Horses, will perform at Steve’s Guitars on New Year’s Eve. Not only will the band reveal its “secretâ€? that evening, it is also the ofďŹ cial release of their new EP, which they’ve been working on for the last two years. “Actually, it’s the coming out party for our new name,â€?

Pevec told The Sopris Sun in an exclusive interview. Although she won’t reveal the moniker before the night of Dec. 31, she did say that “it’s inspired by audience participation and it contains a local reference.�

The reason the band changed their name, she said, is mostly for Internet search reasons but also because they have grown a lot from their beginnings.

Band members include Pevec, Mateo Sandate, Aaron Taylor, Ashton Taufer, Frank Martin and Sophia Clark.

Poll results The most recent Sopris Sun poll asked whether all town of Carbondale employees, including seasonal and part-timers, should be paid at least $15 an hour. The results were 8 yes (53 percent) and 7 no (46 percent).

End-of-year note The year 2013 will be remembered by some as the year of cornhole toss. Cornhole was introduced to Carbondale at Oktober/Celtic fest this fall and later picked up for a fund-raiser in Glenwood Springs.

Cornhole is similar to a beanbag toss, but the bags are ďŹ ll ed with corn rather than beans. The object is to toss the bags into a hole cut into a shallow box (aka a “cornhole platform.â€?) According to the American Cornhole Association website, the game originated in Germany in the 14th

Whitton, the president and a founding member of the American Cornhole Association, said on the ACA website “ ‌ The ‌ Association was established by a small group of dedicated Cornholers from the west side of Cincinnati, Ohio. ‌ Our mission is to introduce our friends and neighbors to the game of Cornhole ‌ and to establish more standardized rules ‌ .â€?

Whitton said the ACA wants to establish a ranking system to allow members to compete with one another around the country based on statistical results of their play. “Our mem-

As for the game’s local future, cornhole observers say they’ll be surprised it doesn’t attract even more players in 2014, and perhaps add members to the ACA roles.

New Year’s resolutions for sustainability

By Sue Gray As Jan. 1 approaches, we inevitably begin thinking about getting a fresh start and how we want to improve our lives in the New Year.

Consider adding a new twist to the traditional resolutions by integrating sustainable practices. Sustainability doesn’t have to mean installing solar panels on the roof or buying the latest electric vehicle. There are many simple ways to improve your life while saving the planet. Here’s how to “green up” the top three New Year’s resolutions:

Improve your health Eat less meat — livestock production puts a large strain on earth’s resources and contributes to air and water pollution. Commit to one or two non-meat days a week.

Eat local, fresh and organic — food transportation accounts for a large percentage of greenhouse gasses. Non-organic farming uses toxic chemicals, while factory-made food has fewer nutrients and contains harmful additives.

Support local farmers or grow your own vegetables, berries and fruit.

Detox your household — cleaning products can contain chlorine bleach, ammonia and other harmful chemicals. Beauty aids also contain a large array of potentially harmful substances. Look for commercially available alternatives to toxic detergents, air fresheners and beauty products, or make your own (search: homemade green cleaners and beauty products for instructions).

Ride a bike and walk more — driving a car contributes to greenhouse gasses and climate change. Try riding a bike or walking to the store, post office, restaurant or to your friend’s house. You’ll reduce your carbon footprint while getting some exercise.

Organize your home Donate excess stuff — clean out the garage or closet without loading up the landfill. Donate usable items to thrift shops, churches, senior centers, schools or needy neighbors. buy less stuff — decrease your consumption level to keep your environmental footprint small. Don’t buy anything you don’t need and keep your old items for as long as you can.

Recycle — to prevent depletion of valuable resources, utilize your trash hauler’s recycling service or take your items to a local recycling station.

Dispose responsibly — heavy metals and chemicals from electronics and household poisons can leach into the soil and water so make sure these items are disposed of properly.

Save money become energy efficient — wasting energy also wastes resources and money. Switch to compact fluorescent and

Try riding a bike or walking to the store, post office, restaurant or to your friend’s house. You’ll reduce your carbon footprint while getting some exercise.

LED lights to save on your electric bill. Check your plumbing and fix water leaks. Install low-flow faucets and showerheads. Insulate your home and add weather stripping to windows and doors.

Turn it off, turn it down — turn out the lights and lower the thermostat. Unplug unused items, especially battery chargers.

Accident victim reflects on her painful recovery Sopris Sun Staff Report The Aspen Clinic CEO Amanda Wagner joined forces with elite personal trainer Megan Reilly to form TAC FIT, a gym with a higher purpose located on East Valley Road in Basalt. On a recent visit, I was able to spend time with Reilly, whose 20 years in the fitness industry has honed an inspirational example of a healthy mind, body and spirit. Her passion is contagious and her conviction in helping others achieve their goals is rooted in more than her two decades of training.

“Ten years ago I drove off of Independence Pass,” says Reilly. “My car struck a boulder and I was crushed from the impact.”

Reilly suffered trauma to her face, chest and wrist, both of her lungs collapsed. She was strapped to a gurney that kept sliding back and forth into the walls of an ambulance racing the winding road to Leadville, which might appear darkly comedic but was anything but.

“The Flight for Life chopper was meeting me in Leadville for emergency trans-

port to Denver,” says Reilly. But in retrospect certain parts (of the incident) did play like theatre.”

The road to recovery was neither simple nor fast but Reilly is a survivor and not only fought through her recovery but also gained a vast amount of rehabilitation knowledge that she utilizes today while assisting others with their rehab.

“The improvements in physical therapy since I was injured are phenomenal,” she says. “The state-of-theart equipment that we have here at TAC FIT and the specific purpose machines that focus on an individual’s precise need would have cut my recovery time by one third. Our director of development, Curtis Schwab, has put his brilliance to work in selecting the finest equipment and his efforts have helped us achieve a fitness facility like no other in the entire valley.”

A group of Roaring Fork Valley residents said they are forming a local chapter of the Citizens Climate Lobby, a non-profit that trains citizens to lobby Congress for climate legislation.

After approving a temporary propertytax hike two years ago, Carbondale Fire District voters rejected a permanent property tax mill levy hike 57 percent to 43 percent. There was no organized opposition to the ballot question, which called for the levy to increase to 12 mills. The district board said it asked for the tax hike due to a decline in property values, which the board expects will result in about $1.2 million less

District staffers and school board members have said they plan to use results from the process to create a new vision for the school system.

When Linda Halloran took over the Colorado Rocky Mountain School gardening program 15 years ago, the plot measured 20'X30' and pretty much died out in the summer. Upon her retirement this year, the plot covers more than an acre and in 2012 produced approximately 11,600 pounds of organic food that is fed to students at the school.

Local arborists are on high alert after the emerald ash borer, an invasive species native to Asia, was discovered in Boulder in September. The beetle has spread to 22 states since it was first detected in the United States 11 years ago, decimating ash tree populations, which lack resistance to the non-native insect.

“This is a reality,” said Dan Bullock of the Carbondale Tree Board. “There is every reason to believe it will get across the (Continental) Divide.”
