Spruce Up e Sun is year’s winner is …

The Sopris Sun continued its Spruce Up The Sun cover competition this year, requesting original designs from contestants pre-K through high school.

The theme this year was “Winter Wonderland” and almost 140 entries were submitted, including a box full from Carbondale Middle School art teacher Ami Maes.

The entries included many beautiful and creative winter holiday scenes as well as some thought-provoking scenes, such as the one from overall cover winner Jho-Anne Marie Cerdenola (an eighth grader at Carbondale Middle School). Winter scenes included everything from winter sports to nighttime scenes in the forest. Snowmen were a highlight this year, showing the many different personalities these winter sculptures often portray.

First place winners in the various categories are: Dylan Riley (pre-school through second grade), Annabelle Stableford (third through fourth grade), Melissa Portillo (fifth grade), Cesár Herrera Romero (sixth grade), Sara Ramirez (seventh grade) and Sara Jensen (eighth grade).

Judging such a competitive contest would not have been possible without the help of discerning eyes at the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities. The Sopris Sun staff and CCAH would also like to thank all of the contestants for sharing their creativity and talents. It made judging a truly difficult task.

Roaring Fork Valley’s conservation easements are secure

In the late 1990s, our ever-popular state was losing over 140,000 acres of agricultural land each year to rural subdivisions and new planned communities, particularly on the Front Range. To try to stem that trend, the state legislature created a tax-credit program in 2002 to give landowners a means to access equity in their land without having to develop or sell off 40-acre parcels. The legislation set up a tax-credit program but failed to define a process for oversight and guess what? Scams arose.

Two “land trusts,” established by attorneys, appraisers and accountants, promoted the program to landowners in the southeast and northeast corners of the state and reaped huge fees for their services. Those services often included “guaranteed” appraisals, which over-valued land by as much as 1,000 percent and often resulted in conservation easements worth much more than the land itself. Legitimate land trusts and conservation professionals reported the abuses to the governor’s office and Colorado Department of Revenue (DOR), and, after almost 10 years, those landowners and the people who purchased the tax credits, are being asked to pay up. The Denver Post reported this week that up to $220 million in credits, penalties and interest is owed to the state.

As executive director of Aspen Valley Land Trust, which has been in existence for 47 years and is Colorado’s oldest land trust, I’ve been intimately involved in a multi-year process of not only seeing that fraudulent deals were stopped, but creating a process to assure it doesn’t happen again. In 2008, Gov. John Hickenlooper established a Conserva-

tion Oversight Commission to deal with the problems of over-valued easements and with the DOR’s excruciatingly slow process for resolving the problems. Sadly, I read every one of the 500 appraisals referenced in the recent Denver Post article during my six years on the commission, three as chairman.

While the individual transactions are classified because they are tax documents, I can generally say that the scope of over-valued appraisals was appalling. Regardless of whether the landowners knew, my opinion is that the promoters clearly knew and many landowners are now paying the price. That the attorneys and appraisers involved have since lost their licenses is small comfort to landowners or state taxpayers.

The good news is, while all that was happening on the Front Range, the program worked well in the rest of the state.

Landowners — with ranches, prime wildlife habitat, stream-front riparian areas and the open lands that define our state and are the backdrop of our economy — were making the decision to conserve their properties and forego the windfall of future development.

While they too received state tax credits, the financial gain was and is always a small fraction of what landowners could receive by selling their land for development. The beneficiaries of their decisions are all of us who not only appreciate our Western heritage and scenic wonders, but who value clean water, clean air and the benefits of being able to grow food locally.

Today, the Colorado conservation easement program is stronger than ever and Colorado is clearly the national leader in conservation and in best practices for con-

servation. Legislation enacted in 2014 provides a system of review for all conservation easement transactions that protects state taxpayers from fraud, and protects landowners from unnecessary entanglement with the DOR. All land trusts must be certified by the state so that “rogue” organizations cannot operate as described in the Denver Post.

AVLT the first I’m proud to note that AVLT was the first land trust in Colorado to be certified in 2010 and one of the first 14 land trusts to receive national accreditation in 2009. Among the 1,500 land trusts in the United States, AVLT is widely recognized as one of the nation’s best.

As a farm girl myself, I’m not unsympathetic to the East Slope farmers caught up in the tax evasion promotions. However, as a taxpayer I also know that people tried to take advantage of the system. With a legitimate land trust, it’s virtually impossible to scam the system, and all of us who live here should be thankful that our legislature has consistently taken action to improve oversight and encourage land conservation.

If you live here in the Roaring Fork or Colorado river valley, look out your car window or your front door. Chances are you’ll be looking at some of nearly 40,000 acres of land conserved by private landowners in partnership with the Aspen Valley Land Trust. Their commitment and our work impact the daily lives of each of us. In this season of gratitude, please take the time to say “thank you” to all who have protected some of our past for the future.

Going at it again Dear Editor: It looks like the Carbondale trustees and the Roaring Fork School District are going to be at it again? We have to have the field behind the Bridges school filled with housing? No place else. We have to have an infill on every available lot. There are already two story units going up all over the place.

Apparently that isn’t good enough.

We have a four-year waiting period for senior housing because of lack of living space. Apparently that doesn’t fit well with some of the town council or the Roaring Fork School District.

We have Thompson Corner that needs to be going. You look in the papers and there are a lot of places for sale and for

rent, pretty high priced I agree. If the economy is so good then why are people still having a hard time finding jobs.

A lot of people use the field that sits between the Bridges building and the Third Street Center. There are new trees planted all over the Third Street Center. What do you call affordable? There seems to be plenty of vacant space other than the field that is used for soccer games. I would hate to see that field used for housing and paved over.

I would hope that the RFSD and the trustees would leave a little open space for kids and people to walk their dogs, just sit out on the benches at Bridges and enjoy the view of Sopris.

Please call or write the town council and let’s put a stop to this. Please don’t cut all of those established trees down and infill with housing, just to please a few people. Just a good point of view.

Carbondale’s Creative District gets boost aer Pryor visit John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent The process of getting Carbondale certified as its own Creative District got a boost last week with a visit from Wendell Pryor, a consultant from Chaffee County who has been hired to assist the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities in the three-year certification process.

Pryor, who also is the director of the Chaffee County Economic Development Corporation and is listed as a lecturer at the University of Colorado Denver Graduate School of Public Affairs as well as at Colorado Mountain College, is being paid by the state to help Carbondale through the Creative District process.

Meanwhile, said CCAH Executive Director Amy Kimberly, the Carbondale Creative District has $15,000 in grant proceeds and other contributions to kick-start the process in its first year. She said the district has been told to expect another $10,000 in grant money in year two, and a final grant of $15,000 in year three, which is the year that certification is to occur.

“We’re moving forward,” Kimberly said during an interview at the new Launchpad arts facility, housed in the old Gordon Cooper Library building.

“And I feel like other communities in the valley are looking at us to see how this goes,” she added, explaining that representatives from Garfield County and the towns of Glenwood Springs and Basalt have expressed interest in the Creative District idea.

The entire Creative Districts idea, she said, came about after Gov. John Hickenlooper learned several years ago that the

“creative industries” of the state are an economic powerhouse.

“It was based on a survey where he saw the creative industries were the fifth largest industry in the state,” Kimberly said. And the term, “creative industries,” covers everything

(RFTA) and a couple of middle school students who are hoping to design and install a new bench along the RFTA-owned Rio Grande Trail under the guidance of the Creative District process.

“There’s a synergy that’s happening in the state, between all the Creative Districts, that Carbondale can tap into.”

Under the Creative District, Kimberly noted, “Businesses are probably going to benefit more than anyone” as a consequence of the belief that being a Creative District will attract people to town, including such disparate groups as tourists, valley residents, artists and others.

Already, Kimberly reported, the Residences at the Little Nell, a luxury-condo complex in Aspen, has been sending shuttles to Carbondale, to give their residents a chance to shop, check out the town and generally get to know another part of the valley.

The idea behind the Creative District effort, Kimberly explained, is to provide a framework for businesses, artists and others to combine their efforts to bring people to town for all manner of activities.

Plus, she said, once Carbondale is certified as one of a dozen or so such districts around the state, organizers can start working with other Creative District personnel around Colorado, as well as with state officials in the Colorado Creative Industries program, and with Western Slope entities such as the Garfield County Economic Development Roundtable, to come up with ways to take advantage of the town’s many creative businesses and events.

She noted that Denver currently has four separate Creative Districts, focusing on different neighborhoods around the city with creative energy to spare, and that is what Kimberly hopes can happen in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Kimberly said there currently are more than 50 “stakeholders” taking part in the formative effort of the Creative District, including, among others, several individuals, businesses, nonprofit organizations, artists, the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority

that Carbondale can tap into, she said.

Task forces Four local task forces — covering Governance, Economic Development, Media and Awareness, and Wayfinding and Connectivity — are to meet in January to combine their ideas so far and discuss what the next steps are in becoming one of the state’s early Creative Districts. The task forces have been meeting since October.

Among other things, Kimberly said, the Governance task force has been charged with deciding who, or which organization, should be selected to essentially manage the Creative Districts process as it moves ahead.

While CCAH has been in the driver’s seat so far, she said, “Some people might feel that CCAH should not be in charge from here on,” a prospect she said is not troubling to her in the least.

“I really think we’re on to something,” Kimberly said of the Creative District process. “It follows state and national trends (of joining together) communities that define themselves through the arts. It’s considered a 21st century economy.”

She said the process is not always well understood or appreciated, particularly by those who adhere to a more traditional view of economic development.

Once, at a gathering of such local movers and shakers, Kimberly said she understood their concerns.

“I’m not saying it’s the only answer,” she said she told the doubters. “But I think it’s a bigger piece of the puzzle than you guys give it credit for.”

Obituary malcolm R. Smith 1940-2014 Malcolm R. Smith, 74, of Tampa, Florida, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 2014, after a battle with melanoma. He was surrounded by his family at the Melech Hospice House.

Malcolm was born in San Diego, California on June 28, 1940. After his high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, which he called the best mistake he ever made. He had an inspiring career as a search & rescue helicopter pilot. He retired in 1977 as a Lt. Commander.

After retirement, Malcolm curated and sold European fine art in New Orleans, Louisiana, and later in Scottsdale, Arizona. For the past 30 years, Malcolm was a skilled and admired real estate broker in Colorado, Oregon and Florida, proudly holding the CCIM designation.

Throughout his life, Malcolm pursued his passions of painting, writing, hunting, fishing and traveling. During his time in Carbondale, Colorado in the late 1900s and early 2000s, Malcolm

served on the board of directors of the Carbondale Fire District, was a member of the Carbondale Rotary Club and was co-owner of Re-Max Mountain West in Carbondale. Malcolm also served a term as president of the Glenwood Springs Association of Realtors.

He will be remembered by his charismatic personality and knack for storytelling.

Malcolm is survived by his wife, Diane Smith; brother, Ron Leach (Lise); sisters, Elaine Markell (Doug) and Martha Dawson; his daughters, Kelly Burnett (Alan), Holly Smith, Wendy Smith and Angela Drewien (Josiah); grandchildren, Kyle Bertoluzzi (Jenn), Amanda Hanson and Ingrid Drewien; nephew Jason Leach; and niece Monica Wisnieski.

Malcolm wouldn’t want his friends and family to grieve but to live life to its fullest just like he did! In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Melech Hospice House, 11125 N. 52nd Street, Temple Terrace, FL 33617.

A memorial service and celebration of Malcom’s life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station in St. Petersburg/Clearwater Florida.

C’dale skaters not even on thin ice Sopris Sun Staff Report As of Sunday, Dec. 21, Carbondale remains without ice in its skating rinks, thanks to unseasonably warm weather in recent weeks, as the weather.com website predicts continued warm weather through the end of this week, though temperatures are expected to dip down into the 20s around New Year’s Eve. Town Manager Jay Harrington, in his weekly memo to the board of trustees, noted that both the downtown rink (at 4th and Main streets) and the rink at the Gus Darien Riding Arena on County Road 100 east of town have been ďŹ lled with water.

Harrington reported that “we need temperatures consistently in the teens at night� in order for the rinks to freeze solid, which is the precondition for permitting skaters to use the facilities.

Once the rinks are ready and open, Harrington reported, skate rentals will be available at the town’s recreation center for $3 per day or $10 for three days, and skate sharpening is available at the recreation center for $5.

In other recreational news, Harrington reported that the ďŹ rst draft of the town’s 10-year Comprehensive Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan, which has been in the hands of consultants at Design Workshop, is to be submitted this week for review by the Parks & Recreation Commission at its January meeting. It is expected to be reviewed again on Jan. 20 at a work session of the board of trustees.

The Carbondale Recreation and Community Center will be closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, and will close early (at 5 p.m.) on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, Harrington stated.

He also reported that online registration is now available for winter/spring programming, at the website, www.carbondalerec.com.

With the continuing popularity of climbing classes at the recreation center, the town has added a class for those aged 4-6 years,

called the Spider Monkey class.

Electricians working on a new trafďŹ c signal at Highway 133 and Snowmass Drive have been unable to get it working, and Harrington reported that the signal might not be working until Jan. 6. Meanwhile, the town’s street crew continues to work on installing signs to go along with the new ashing beacons at pedestrian crossings and other highway signage issues.

Street crew workers also have been sweeping up debris and ice-control materials along the Highway 133 corridor and certain spots around town, as well as cleaning away leaves from storm drain inlets, in preparation for the arrival of winter.

With the recent completion of the roundabout, Harrington continued, the police department will begin delivering letters to local businesses, alerting them that the normal truck route down Colorado Avenue has been resumed.

As parks-crew members continue working to beautify wooden furniture on the streets and in town parks, the town’s arborist, David Coon, has been trimming and pruning trees around Carbondale, Harrington reported.

There’s a new cop in town, as Carbondale Police Department OfďŹ cer Steve Kuhl started his initial training last week, including a ďŹ eld-training session with OfďŹ cer Fred Williams on Saturday night. Harrington noted in his memo that the CPD would be conducting recertiďŹ cation training with its patrol staff, covering such matters as arrest control/defensive tactics and “standard ďŹ eld roadside maneuversâ€? for trafďŹ c stops involving suspected intoxicated drivers.

Utility department workers have been performing ongoing adjustments and corrections to the town’s wastewater treatment and water treatment plant, and those adjustments are continuing, Harrington wrote in his memo.

FRIDAY, Dec. 12: At 12:05 p.m. police arrested two juveniles at 2270 Highway 133, aged 14 and 15, in relation to an alleged drug sale. One youth was charged with selling “marijuana or marijuana concentrate� to the other teen, and the other teen was charged with possession.

FRIDAY, Dec. 12: At 7:41 p.m. ofďŹ cers arrested a local man on charges of drunk driving, failure to drive in a single lane and careless driving, apparently at the roundabout at Highway 133 and Main Street.

TUESDAY, Dec. 16: At 7:42 a.m. police took a report about a two-vehicle accident at Hendrick Drive and Highway 133, wherein the driver, a juvenile, reportedly spilled coffee on his own lap and piled into the vehicle stopped at the stop sign ahead of him. No citations were issued.

TUESDAY, Dec. 16: At 6:05 p.m. police responded to a two-car accident in the roundabout. No injuries were reported, and no ticket apparently was issued.

THURSDAY, Dec. 18: At 12:19 p.m. police were called to a bar on a report that a patron had, apparently without management permission, “installed� a multi-stick pool cue holder on a table where patrons usually put their drinks while shooting pool. No one was arrested for the offense at the time, though police are hopeful the identity of the installer will ultimately be known and he or she can be questioned.

Jingle Bellers ring out running season Sopris Sun Staff Report In what might be the final event of the 2014 season, 62 competitors finished the Independence Run & Hike 5K run on Saturday despite an on-going snowstorm that did not rain on their parade.

Runners of all ages, abilities and outfits took off on the Rio Grande Trail behind Independence Run & Hike at about 11 a.m., headed east through the falling snow to Eighth Street then south to Merrill Avenue, where they hooked a left and proceed past what some folks used to call “Three Mile

Island,” then south on Fourth Street through the Main Street intersection to Sopris Avenue, past the library then to the top of White Hill, at which point they turned, slipped and slid around an orange traffic cone and headed back the same way they came.

Fourteen-year-old Henry Barth (in green, below) covered the 3.1 mile course in 20:22 and took first place, followed by Megan Lizotte with a time of 20:49. After everyone was safe and warm back at the store, Ryan Foote was pronounced the

Ugly Sweater winner for an outfit that included short shorts and pink socks.

Let’s get visible, visible A bicyclist is urging other bikers to “be as visible as you can” and use hand signals when traveling the new roundabout, after a motorist knocked him off his bike just before 8 a.m. on Dec. 12. Michael Mulry told The Sopris Sun he was not injured in the crash, nor was he at fault, and is not blaming the roundabout at Main Street and Highway 133, “ … but the roundabout is so small you don’t have much time to make your move.” (Editor’s note: to understand the dynamics of this mishap, envision a clock with a 12 o’clock on top, 6 at the bottom, 9 to the left and 3 to the right). Mulry, a retired school teacher who lives in Crystal Village, said he entered the roundabout from Main Street at the 9, intending to exit eastbound onto Main Street at the 3, on his way to meet friends at Bonfire. After entering the roundabout as he approached the 6, there were two north-bound cars waiting to enter the roundabout. Mulry said he signaled his intentions as he approached the cars, waved and pointed to where he was going, but one did not see him and clipped his rear tire as he (the motorist) entered the roundabout. Next thing Mulry knew, he was on his back between the 3 and 6, assessing any possible damage to his body. Meanwhile, someone called 911 and others helped Mulry get his bike, which was also uninjured, to the center of the roundabout and out of traffic.

Mulry asked the responding police officer not to cite the motorist, then asked what he could have done differently. “He (the officer)

pointed to his ‘don’t squash me’ green jacket.” So, Mulry bought a yellow bicyclist’s jacket that he’s been wearing around town ever since. Mulry said he was wearing a rust colored jacket at the time of the crash and there was a lot of rush hour traffic entering the roundabout, but that he thought the cars saw him. “(But) people speed up to get in, then are in a hurry to get out … especially when the roundabout is busy, be as visible as you can.”

Hetty Van Kesteren: Indonesia native loving life in Carbondale

Considering her diminutive stature, Hetty Van Kesteren’s joyful and easy laugh can seem out of context until you grasp the emphasis in her statement “I have found my place in life.”

Born in Jakarta on the Indonesian island of Java, Hetty is the epitome of a person who has lived a multi-cultural life. When she was a child, Indonesia was a Dutch colony, used for its oil, spices and sugar plantations. Both of her grandfathers came to Indonesia from The Netherlands and married Indonesian women. She grew up with 11 brothers and sisters, and her father managed a medical opium company. Indonesian labor was cheap, and Hetty grew up with servants who lived on the outskirts of town in “gedecks” — poorly constructed housing with dirt floors. “We spoke Dutch at home, Indonesian to the servants, and learned Oxford English in school. The natives were Hindu, but my family was Catholic so I went to Catholic school,” Hetty told The Sopris Sun. Hetty’s middle class upbringing did not spare her from the horrors of World War II, however, and when the Japanese overtook Indonesia, her family was split apart.

“My brothers were sent to prisoner labor camps in Japan, while my mother and sisters and I we transported by train to a Japanese prison camp on Java; we lived there from 1942 to 1945. The trains were hot, and we had no food or water. Many people died on the train. At the labor camp, my mother was quite weak, so my older sister made sure the work my mother was required to do was finished — mostly carrying rice from the paddies. When my sister was moved to work at the hospital, she was able to get more food for us so we could survive. My brothers refused to ever speak of their time at the camps in Japan. They would get teary-eyed.”

Hetty said she feels the changes she has had to go through in life have made her a better person. The ability to adapt meant, “I was worth something.” Now she lives an independent life near her younger son, his wife, and their newborn boy, Hendrix. Babysitting is a joy, as are her close friends at the Crystal Meadows senior housing complex. She says that having a dog has opened many social doors for her as she rides her trike through the neighborhood with Dallas in the front basket. “I love Carbondale. I love everything about Carbondale and living here.”

Crystal Meadows senior housing Tucked between Highway 133 and the Crystal River, south of Main Street, is Crystal Meadows senior housing. This safe, quiet and tight-knit community consists of 79 dwellings spread across five acres.

Each 600-square-foot, one-bedroom residence is one story. The property is conveniently placed, located within walking distance of the grocery store, doctor’s office and downtown, and residents are allowed pets.

It’s greatest advantage, according to many who live there, is the sense of friendship and community that abounds.

John Nieslanik and Dorothy Marshall started the Carbondale Housing Authority, which built Crystal Meadows, in the 1980’s by raising money and applying for federal grants. The land was bought from Dr. Hendricks in the 1980’s and is part of the original Hendricks’ ranch. As these federal grants no longer exist, the timing was perfect for establishing a much-needed facility for senior citizens and disabled citizens in the lower income bracket.

There are two types of federal housing programs within the site: HUD units, for people over 62 years old with an income of no more than $25,900 per year; and USDA rural development housing units, for people who are disabled or over 62 with an income of no more than $27,300 per year. Rents vary, as residents are charged 30 percent of their income; utilities are included in the rent. Currently, there is a four-plus year waiting list to get into the complex.

Anyone interested in living at Crystal Meadows can drop by the office and pick up an application.

This complex is home to a wide range of colorful Carbondale characters, all with unique and fascinating stories to tell. They will chat up new friends and neighbors while working in the adjacent community garden or walking their dogs at the nearby dog park.

Many of them landed here in order to be closer to children and grandchildren and have since found great friends, an active lifestyle, and a welcoming and comfortable town to call home.

War’s end When the war ended, Hetty and her family were forced to stay in the camp another year; the Dutch and Indonesians were clashing over Indonesian independence, and the ensuing violence made life outside of the camp walls too dangerous. The English and Australians attempted to get relief packages to them. “I had an apple for the first time in my life. I have never had an apple as good as that one,” she said. But the ensuing attempts at food aid were intercepted by the black market. “We survived. That’s all anyone can say, isn’t it? We survived.”

As a term of independence, the Indonesian residents were all required to declare a nationality; racially, she and her family members were equally mixed. “We had to choose whether we were Dutch or Indonesian. To stay, we had to claim to be Indonesian. We chose to be Dutch and moved to The Netherlands because the opportunities were better.” When asked about the radical cultural change and how she adapted, Hetty exclaimed, “I loved it! For the first time I had potatoes! And carrots! And salad and meat! In Jakarta, we had mostly lived on fish and rice.”

Hetty married and had a son before immigrating to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1962. She laughs as she says, “It was July Fourth isn’t that something? It was hard to immigrate into the U.S. then, and we had to have a sponsor. One of my sisters was in Cincinnati, so that’s where we went.”

Hetty became a huge Reds (baseball) and Bengals (football) fan. Any sports star raised in Cincinnati became “one of her boys.” As proof, her dog, Dallas, is named after Roger Staubach, a Cincinnati native who became a Dal-

Nicole DeSimone wins Wyly’s inaugural WOW award Sopris Sun Staff report The public came, saw and soaked in more than 50 works from local artists, then voted to make Nicole DeSimone the recipient of the inaugural Wyly Open Winner (WOW) award for her oil on canvas titled “Lady on the Steps.”

• The Wyly’s main gallery presents Carbondale artist Susan Obermeyer Strauss in the show “Domestic Wild” starting with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Jan. 9. Strauss said her current work features horses (her “earthly obsession”) in a broad range, exploring them and man through many cultures. The show continues through March 7.

• The Wyly recently named Eliza Rogan as its new program director. Rogan will oversee community programs and educational outreach, as well as develop and expand art classes for adults and children to include pattern making, computer animation, film making, digital photography and more. Additionally Rogan will curate new

exhibitions at The Wyly Annex and The Wyly Art Center, as well as coordinate artist talks, panel discussions and art events at both galleries. Before joining The Wyly, Rogan attended the Art Institute of Chicago and earned a BA in studio art and a Master in Education from the University of Virginia. After teaching middle school art for four years, she founded The Flying Pig Art Center in Scottsville, Virginia. Since moving to the Roaring Fork Valley three years ago, Rogan has worked as a free-lance illustrator, muralist and art educator. “I have found my roots in the community with my new role at The Wyly Art Center,” Rogan said. She lives in Redstone with her musician husband Josh, and their two snow-loving dogs.

• The Art Project for kids will be offered on Tuesdays from Jan. 13 through Feb. 17 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Children will develop a project from start to finish based on creative themes like The Wyly’s twist on “Into The Woods.” They will also explore their own stories through mask making, dioramas, painting, printmaking and more.

Magic Buzz spreading word about infused products Colorful van also turning heads John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent A vintage, very colorful Volkswagen Microbus that once sold coffee to tourists in Snowmass Village is now the mobile base of Carbondale’s latest entry into Colorado’s burgeoning recreational marijuana industry, a “marijuana infused products” business known as the Magic Buzz — the same name it had when it was basically a motorized coffee cart.

The 1971 Microbus, said owner Scott Calliham of Snowmass Village, is “almost like a mobile educational opportunity, or a mobile library about facts and information,” which is based in Carbondale and got its permits to do business here in October.

The information he offers, he said, is about the Colorado legalized pot industry in general, and cannabis infused products particularly.

Calliham stressed that his products are different from much of what is on the market today, noting that he puts out “functionally enhanced” infused products, meaning he adds ingredients that help the Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC (the intoxicating component of pot) achieve the desired results.

Calliham, 49, emphasized that he does not actually sell his products out of the van, which would be illegal and which he admitted has occasioned more than one conversation with a concerned police officer and a few eager customers.

Back when he was selling coffee, he said, customers would walk up to his service window and, after getting their coffee, would glance inside and ask, “Why don’t you sell pot out of this?”

“I would answer, because it’s not legal,” he recalled with a grin, adding that even now, as a licensed manufacturer of edible pot, he is prohibited from carrying product in the van.

Instead, he carries around a number of what he said are “empties” to show people what his products look like.

He plans ultimately to have a multi-media show in the back of his van, to acquaint potential customers with his products, all powered by a solar panel mounted on top of the vehicle.

cups of coffee to a specialized product he called coffee-based “energy shots” in 2-ounce plastic bottles. He sold those drinks for two years, until 2013, when he decided the business had to evolve again, this time into the recreational pot market.

In this latest enterprise, he uses the same basic packaging as he used for his coffeeflavored shots, with new labels and, of course, new ingredients.

At present, his products include three shotsized drinks, each with 10 milligrams of THC, which he said “is considered a singleserving low dose.” He emphasized that he is part of a coalition of pot-related business in Colorado (check out www.consumeresponsibly.org) that offer advice to consumers about how to use their products safely.

In his product line, one is a mango-orange flavored concoction called “Buzzin’,” with THC extracted from a “sativa dominant” pot strain that is generally considered the higherenergy pot on the market. That is blended with yerba mate, a caffeine-dense tea, and taurine, a naturally occurring amino acid believed to improve athletic performance. The result, according to his website (www.themagicbuzz.com) is “an uplifting boost of energy, enhanced creative senses and cerebral mood … to supercharge your journey.”

Another preparation from the Magic Buzz is the acai-berry flavored “Chillin’,” a blend of indica (which produces a heavier, more lethargic high) and sativa pot strains, green tea and milk thistle, which the website terms “relaxing, restorative and contemplative.”

The third flavor Calliham has so far is a honey-lemon flavored shot called “Snoozin’,” which is termed a “maximum strength sleep aid” that combines the effects of strictly indica pot, valerian root and chamomile tea, all of which induce sleepiness.

He plans to come out soon with a pink lemonade flavor, at a strength of 5 milligrams per shot, “because some people don’t even want 10 mg, it’s too strong for them.”

Calliham said he supplies 15 or so recreational pot businesses in the Roaring Fork Valley and other communities on the Western Slope. Two Carbondale outlets — Doctor’s Garden and the Acme Healing Center — sell his products, and he said he expects soon to do business with another, more established local pot shop, Rocky Mountain High on Village Road.

In addition, he plans to expand to markets in the metro Denver area and in Boulder in 2015.

Photo by John Colson He told The Sopris Sun that there are “about 90 licenses in the state of Colorado to produce ‘infused products,’” some of which are linked to previously approved medical marijuana or recreational dispensaries and their respective cultivation operations. Many infused products typically are made from the “shake” that naturally accumulates as part of the production process of growing and packaging pot for sale in the dispensaries.

Calliham wrote in an e-mail that there increasing specialization in the industry, with more firms focusing on a “what you do best” business philosophy, including compa-

nies that strictly produce infused products.

“As such, I would guess there are less than 70 and possibly as few as 60 ‘active’ infused product manufacturers in Colorado,” he concluded.

Calliham has lived in the Roaring Fork Valley for 22 years, he said, and is married with three young children.

Originally from Kansas City, Kansas, he “moved here to ski and play and ride my bike,” and came up with the motorized coffee cart idea as a way of supporting those aims.

His current business, he said, “Is just the evolution of that business, into this one.”
