Spruce Up e Sun is year’s winner is ‌ The Sopris Sun continued its Spruce Up The Sun cover competition this year, requesting original designs from contestants pre-K through high school.

The theme this year was “Magical Moments� and over 160 entries were submitted, including a box full from Carbondale Middle School art teacher Ami Maes.

This year’s winner truly expressed the magic of a Carbondale Christmas, complete with a fairy and holly-inspired dandelion created by Carbondale Middle School eighth grader Kylie Orf. The entries included many different expressions of the theme, including: winter scenes of “Star Wars,� beach-going Santas, marine wildlife, forest animals and dinosaurs, as well as the traditional snowman, Santa and winter sports scenes.

There were even some romantic moments reminiscent of jewelry commercials seen on television. Some humorous entries made the judges laugh, such as the Jackson Five performing for dancing marshmallows.

First-place winners in the various categories are: Laia Ogilby (kindergarten through ďŹ rst grade), Lily Stewart (second grade), Campbell Morgan (third grade), Henry Figueroa Candela (fourth grade), Fatima Herrera (ďŹ fth grade), Aislinn Pinela (sixth grade), Jessie Diehl (seventh grade) and Soren Blachly (eighth grade).

Judging such a competitive contest would not have been possible without the help of the discerning eyes of staff members at the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities (CCAH), and The Sopris Sun. CCAH and The Sopris Sun would also like to thank all the contestants for sharing their creativity and talents. It made judging a truly difďŹ cult task.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus Dear Editor: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see.

They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence.

We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight.

The external light with which childhood fills the world would

be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there.

Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Bernie keeps burning Dear Editor: Bernie Sanders is the chosen winner of the 2016 presidential mock election by Western Illinois University, which has correctly predicted the winner of each presidential election since 1975.

Bernie Sanders got more popular votes for the TIME magazine Person of the Year than any other candidate – five times more than Donald Trump, and seven times more than Hillary Clinton. Yet the major networks/news media still only give Bernie a tiny amount of press.

Bernie doesn’t take corporate donations, has no super PACs fronted by corporations, while the Clintons have taken in millions of dollars in speech fees and campaign contributions from large corporations such as Goldman-Sachs. How that plays into the reality of the 1996 Telecommunications

Act, giving corporations the ability to buy up approximately 96 percent of our press/media/textbooks markets sure underscores how we have lost the free press in the United States, since Bill Clinton signed it into effect.

We get to watch or listen to what the corporate owners of our media want us to watch or listen to. Don’t be fooled when they say the Clintons winning the White House is inevitable, or that Bernie is unelectable.

I thought I understood “double-think” — the acceptance of, or mental capacity to accept, contrary opinions or beliefs at the same time, especially as a result of political indoctrination. But what do you call it when it’s a result of corporate indoctrination? Thank goodness for local newspapers like The Sopris Sun! Please let all your friends know that if they are not registered as a Democrat by Dec. 31, they’ll not be able to vote for Bernie in their local Colorado primary caucus at 7 p.m. on March 1, and that they have to physically show up to vote for him.

There is no mail-in ballot for the presidential Democratic Party primary in Colorado; and that party affiliation change may be effected in just a couple of minutes via govotecolorado.com (Find My Registration), and having their driver’s license or Colorado ID number with them. Board votes to dra fire chief contract

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The elected leaders of the Carbondale fire department have concluded they want a contract describing the duties and responsibilities of their fire chief, citing an interest in having such things clearly spelled out in the future.

The board of directors for the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District voted on Dec. 9 to direct the district’s attorney, Eric Gross, to work with the department’s staff and submit a proposed contract at a future board meeting.

The idea, which was first raised by current Fire Chief Ron Leach at a fire board meeting last June, seemed to have receded after Leach withdrew his request for an employment contract following a somewhat contentious discussion of the topic at a June 2 special meeting of the board.

“If we were taking one employee and saying, we need to have a special contract for you,” said fire board member Carl Smith, speaking on June 2 about Leach’s proposal, “what will the message be to the other 17?” Smith was referring to the district’s staff of 18 paid employees, including Leach.

After that meeting, Leach told The Sopris Sun, “It’s not about me now. I actually don’t feel a need to have a contract in place. I’ve moved beyond that.”

He had previously said that he felt having an employment contract for the fire chief would add “stability” to the district’s operations.

Following last week’s fire board meeting, Leach informed The Sopris Sun by e-mail that while he did not instigate – Bob Emerson the renewed discussion “I do think it is Carbondale Fire Board member a good idea for the district to have such a policy,” citing the apparent difficulties the city of Glenwood Springs has faced in negotiations with outgoing City Manager Jeff Hecksel.

The current move to renew the discussion, however, is not directed solely at Leach.

“I’m not sure if Ron still wants to have a contract,” declared board member Bob Emerson, who raised the subject during the Dec. 9 meeting. At the June meeting, Emerson, like others on the board, felt the discussion about a possible contract for Leach should be held in an executive session and out of the public eye.

At the Dec. 9 meeting, however, Emerson conceded that the discussion should properly take place in public, not behind closed doors.

As for the reasons to have the discussion at all, Emerson said, “One of the things that is an issue is that Ron’s been here for a long time and he’s not going to be here forever.” He said it is common for the head administrative officials of public institutions to have contracts, and that having such a contract “would be important for us in finding a good person to step into Ron’s shoes.”

He also said that contracts in general provide a framework and such things as a description of the compensation that comes with the position, and a job description, and “eliminates a lot of misunderstandings or problems down the road.”

Leach, while he did not say at the meeting whether he would want a contract at this time, recalled that he did have a contract at one point in 1980 or so, and told the board that he does have a job description on file that “says about the same thing today as it said 20 years ago.”

Board member Carl Smith, who resisted the idea of a contract for Leach back in June, said at the Dec. 9 meeting that he favored moving ahead with the discussion.

In other action the fire board: • Approved a budget for district operations in 2016, with plans to hire three new EMTs over the course of the year, at a total budgetary cost of approximately $98,400 for all three. (See related story).

• Agreed to consider modifying the district’s health-insurance regulations to include coverage of “domestic partners,” acting on a request from a fire fighter.

• Heard a report from board chairman Gene Schilling that, as a consequence of a decision by the town’s Board of Trustees to hold its regular meetings on Wednesdays instead of on Tuesdays, he might be absent from regular fire board meetings, which also are held on Wednesdays. Schilling said that “if it becomes a problem” the fire board may wish to consider changing its own regular-meeting day to avoid a conflict.

• Agreed to a three-percent raise for the district’s 18 paid personnel, at a projected cost of approximately $37,000 for the year.

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The Carbondale Fire District goes into the new year with a considerably rosier outlook, financially speaking, than has been the case for the last couple of years, thanks to a recent tax hike approved by district voters.

And a large portion of that improved outlook concerns the district's paid personnel — 18 full-time firefighters and emergency medical technicians currently, but with plans to hire three more full-time fire fighters/paramedics in 2016.

The district's voters on Nov. 3 approved a tax hike that, along with increases in the assessed values of property throughout the district, is expected to generate nearly $1 million in new revenues for the coming year, according to a report on the 2016 budget by Fire Chief Ron Leach.

Overall, with all income sources in-

cluded, the 2016 budget for the district is projected at $2.67 million in operating revenues and expenses, also known as the General Fund, of which $2.54 million is from property taxes.

Of the total General Fund budget, according to documents on file at the district, personnel costs account for $2.1 million, which includes wages and salaries, benefits and a variety of related expenses covering the work of the department's 18 paid personnel. The district also has about 65 volunteers who respond to fires and other calls for service, along with the paid employees.

One important part of the personnel costs, as described by fire district officials in the run-up to the Nov. 3 election, is the hiring of three new firefighters/paramedics over the course of the coming year, to replace three employees who were let go in 2013 as the district dealt with revenue FIRE DISTRICT page 8

Crews on top of community oven Staff Report

The town of Carbondale is seeking local-area contractors (from Rifle to Aspen) to bid on a two-part project at the Gus Darien Rodeo Arena — construction of a roof over one of the sets of bleacher seats on the south side of the arena, and renovation and remodeling of the rodeo arena announcers’ booth — according to Harrington. Contractors interested in receiving a free copy of the project manual for either of the projects should contact Recreation Director Jeff Jackel at 510-1214. A pre-bid meeting for interested contractors is planned for Jan. 12, at 1 p.m. at Town Hall, 511 Colorado Ave. The bid opening for the projects is scheduled for Feb. 2.

David Coon, the town arborist, finished placing spruce trees in planters around town, Harrington reported. He also noted that deer fencing has been installed around new trees along the Highway 133 corridor, explaining that those trees have experienced damage recently.

In addition, town crews had to remove or repair damaged limbs on trees along Main Street that were “vandalized” at some point.

The town's Special Event & Street Closure Committee meets Dec. 17 at 5:15 p.m. in Town Hall to discuss proposed special event locations and Main Street closures for 2016, Harrington wrote. The committee’s recommendations will be discussed by the Board of Trustees on Jan. 27, at a meeting that is open to the public.

At the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center, weekly Enrichment Wednesday programs are scheduled to coincide with early-release of students in the Roaring Fork School District. The programs include a facilitated climbing session on the center's climbing wall, and an “open gym” option, from 2 to 4 p.m. every Wednesday.

From Dec. 3-10, Carbondale police officers handled 180 calls for service. During that period, officers investigated the following cases of note:

FRIDAY, Dec. 4: At 11:38 a.m. officers took a report of a possible sex assault near Sopris Park. Details were kept confidential due to fact that a juvenile was involved.

FRIDAY, Dec. 4: At 11:43 p.m. police were contacted by security personnel at a bar regarding a fight that had taken place in the bar.

Officers identified a suspect believed to be the one who started the fight, and issued him a ticket summoning him to municipal court.

SATURDAY, Dec. 5: At 2:14 a.m. officers were advised by a citizen that he had seen a silver Land Rover hit a parked car at the corner of 4th Street and Garfield Avenue, then drive away. Police dealt with another hit-andrun accident at the City Market parking lot, on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 10:02 a.m. In both incidents, police were unable to immediately locate the “run” vehicle. A third hit-and-run, this one involving a collision, occurred on Dec. 9 at 7:46 a.m. on Vito’s Way. SUNDAY, Dec. 6: At 8:34 a.m. police stopped a car for having an obstructed windshield, and found that the vehicle was uninsured. The driver was ticketed for the alleged offense, and his car was towed.

SUNDAY, Dec. 6: At 1:41 p.m. police stopped a vehicle for failing to obey a traffic control device and found that this vehicle, too, was uninsured. The driver was issued a ticket and the vehicle was towed.

Work continues on the shelter over the Community Bread Oven behind the Third Street Center in Bonnie Fischer Park, according to town manager Jay Harrington’s weekly report to trustees, staffers and others. The basic framing has been completed and the roof framing was expected to be finished this week, with a projected completion date by the end of this month.

In other news from Harrington’s weekly report: Harrington reported that sales tax revenues for November were up by 6.8 percent over those of November, 2014, and that the town’s year-to-date sales tax revenues are up by 7.4 percent for 2015.

Members of the street crew helped the utilities department with a water main break east of 8th Street on Dec. 7, and worked during the week to clean up fallen leaves along the curbs and gutters around town in advance of an impending snowstorm.

The crew also helped recreation department employees with work on the ice rink at the Gus Darien Rodeo Arena along Catherine Store Road (Garfield County Road 100) to the east of town, and the family ice rink at Fourth and Main streets, including hauling water to flood the rink once the rink liners were put in place. The town is hoping temperatures will stay low enough to freeze the rinks in time to open them to the public when the Christmas break begins for school kids on Dec. 18.

Street crew workers also placed new reflective stop-sign decals on signs that had been faded by sun and weather.

The parks crew kept up its leaf-removal efforts at local parks last week, assisted with the clearing of leaves and debris from gutters along Main Street, and did its routine job of maintaining trash receptacles and dog-waste stations at the parks.

As winner of the competition – which attracted 33, 10-minute plays from local students – Gruel’s play will be presented by New York theatre professionals during the last weekend in January and the first weekend in February in Aspen, according to a RFHS spokeswoman. Gruel’s play includes several characters, including the mythical demon Mephistopheles. Gruel wasn’t the only RFHS student who made the podium, so to speak.

Kloe Lee and Bryon Thurston took runner-up honors and will have their plays (“How Are You, Really?” and “Stay or Go,” respectively) read by local professional actors at a school performance.

In language arts/ELD, Mrs. Hernandez and Ms. Tatham are working on a new unit theme titled “The Challenge of Utopia.” In it, students have been learning new strategies for reading, summarizing and comparing/contrasting in writing. They have also been reading Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451.”

In Mrs. Campbell’s physical education, nearly 60 students have signed up for dance classes, thanks to a grant from the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities. The goal is to give a dance performance to the school in February.

More student news At Basalt High School, sophomore Mauricio Sosa is working to raise funds to build what he’s calling a Peace Garden to create a safe, quiet space for all students. The garden will be located adjacent to the library, and Sosa hopes to complete the project in April. He has received $3,500 in funding from the Dream Project, the Snowmass Chapel and the Schuss Foundation, plus more than $28,000 in the form of in-kind donations. To complete the garden, he still needs $10,000 for plants and to cover labor. Dozens of students have said they will volunteer their time for three days to work on the garden in April.

Trustees talk turkey on taxes: carbon & property More discussion on Jan. 13

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Carbondaleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s elected leaders on Tuesday talked about two revenue-raising ballot questions currently being pursued by the town, one a â&#x20AC;&#x153;carbon taxâ&#x20AC;? proposed for inclusion on utility bills for local residential and commercial consumers, the other a property tax to pay for a variety of capital improvement projects.

The discussion was held at a special meeting of the Board of Trustees, called to talk about the possible ramiďŹ cations of putting one or both questions on the ballot in April, 2016.

Energy tax The town, in conjunction with the Community OfďŹ ce of Resource EfďŹ ciency (CORE) and the Clean Energy Economy for the Region (CLEER), has been working for years on ways to boost energy efďŹ ciency in government, residential and commercial buildings.

A proposed fee linked to energy use, or â&#x20AC;&#x153;carbon tax,â&#x20AC;? is meant to both encourage local businesses and residents to reduce their energy consumption habits and provide funding for CORE and CLEER to continue their work helping residents and

businesses with such things as energy audits and building improvements that increase the energy efďŹ ciency of buildings.

According to Mayor Stacey Bernot, the town already has spent in the neighborhood of $1.6 million since 2007 on energy-efďŹ ciency programs intended to reduce Carbondaleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s carbon footprint, meaning the amount of energy consumed by local residents, business and government facilities.

Under what is known as the Carbondale 2020 program, the town has set goals of increasing energy efďŹ ciency and cutting energy use town-wide by 20 percent, reducing the use of carbon-based fuels by 25 percent, and producing 35 percent of the energy used here from renewable resources, all by the year 2020.

Much of the funding to pay for these environmentally-oriented goals has been in the form of energy-impact mitigation money (formally called mineral severance tax revenues and mineral lease fees), which are paid by energy companies doing business in this part of Colorado.

But those funds have been drying up in recent years, in response to plummeting oil and gas prices and vast reductions in the pace of oil and gas drilling in Western Colorado.

The idea of a carbon tax, according to Bernot, is a way to create a permanent fund for continuing the CLEER and CORE programs.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is our best ďŹ rst step to get a dedicated funding source,â&#x20AC;? the mayor declared at Tuesdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meeting, an idea that found agreement among others on the board of trustees.

Erica Sparhawk of CLEER and Lucy Kessler, outreach coordinator for CORE, told the trustees that at a recent community meeting, attendees were generally positive about the idea of the carbon tax, although Kessler noted that there were some who worried what the estimated $7 fee on utility bills would mean for lowincome residents.

That idea was picked up by Trustee Katrina Byars, a single mom who characterized herself as a low-income resident. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am 100 percent behind it,â&#x20AC;? she said of the 2020 goals. She added, however, that the additional fee on her utility bill would be a hardship for her and her two children, whose limited means have occasionally meant she went without a meal in order to be sure her kids were getting enough food.

She also suggested that the town might be better advised to spend its money on broader effort to encourage the use of renewable energy, rather than energy-efďŹ ciency programs, as a way of helping with the national effort to wean people off their dependence on carbon-based fuels.

That brought ďŹ rm rebukes from the mayor and Trustees Pam Zentmyer and Frosty Merriott, who all argued that the

town has been working hard on increasing energy efďŹ ciency among residents, businesses and in government facilities.

To switch that focus, Zentmyer said at one point, would be â&#x20AC;&#x153;irresponsibleâ&#x20AC;? given the funds and effort that already have gone into the existing programs.

And, the mayor said, the town has yet to get voter feedback on these kinds of programs.

Regarding the possible ballot question, Bernot said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m actually excited about this, to see where it falls. I think we need people to weigh in on this.â&#x20AC;?

The trustees ultimately decided to direct staff to write up a proposed ordinance and ballot question, to be presented to the board at a meeting on Jan. 13, for possible inclusion on the April ballot.

Capital fund Town ofďŹ cials have been talking for months about a need to come up with money to pay for large-scale capital projects, such as major street work or coming up with a town-wide transit system, which recently have been at least partially funded out of the general fund operating budget and partially by mineral severance tax receipts and mineral lease fees.

shortfalls due to the recent Great Recession.

According to ďŹ gures provided by the district, the three new employees will be hired in January, July and October, and the district calculates that the partial-year salary amounts are projected to cost a total of $98,405 in 2016.

The individual salaries of the three are projected to be $55,517, Leach said, adding that their total salaries will be ďŹ gured into the department's budget for 2017 and into the future.

The department recently conducted a survey of salaries among neighboring ďŹ re districts, including the departments of Basalt, Snowmass Village, Glenwood Springs and the Colorado River Valley (RiďŹ&#x201A;e through New Castle).

According to that survey, a ďŹ reďŹ ghter/ paramedic in Carbondale this year was earning a base-pay salary between $45,487 and $49,461, depending on his or her level of medical training.

In other districts of departments, the survey indicated, base salaries for similar jobs were reported as ranging up to $61,198, without any beneďŹ ts added on.

Leach explained that the salaries he gave out for Carbondale's new hires, just over $55,500, includes holiday pay and a certain amount of overtime pay that traditionally is built into the ďŹ reďŹ ghters' pay. In essence, Leach said, the new hires will be coming in at the highest base-pay level as was indicated in the salary survey, or $49,461.

Another aspect of the recently adopted

ďŹ re district budget is a three-percent, acrossthe-board raise approved by the ďŹ re board for all of the district's paid employees.

Board member Carl Smith told The Sopris Sun in an e-mail that the raise would cost the district a total of $39,911 for all paid employees, but that the actual, individual raises would differ depending on the current salary being earned by particular ďŹ reďŹ ghters.

Smith said he argued that each ďŹ reďŹ ghter in the district should receive the same dollar amount, which would translate to a raise of $2,217 per paid employee, rather than higher raises for those earning more money already. This arrangement, Smith said, would mean â&#x20AC;&#x153;an obvious greater amount going to the lower paid employeesâ&#x20AC;? than a percentile raise.

The board, however, went for the percentile raise instead.

For the district's highest-paid employee, Leach, that will mean a raise of about $3,448 next year from his current salary of $114,965, to a new salary of about $118,414.

Other salaries reported in the survey include that of the deputy ďŹ re chief in charge of operations ($87,470); the training chief ofďŹ cer, ($81,749); the ďŹ re marshal ($90,820); and the ďŹ nance director ($75,172), among others.

Although the survey did not identify the neighboring departments speciďŹ cally, it indicated that in many cases other districts and departments pay their personnel at 0331 Robinson St. #1081, Basalt

higher rates than does Carbondale.

For example, basic ďŹ reďŹ ghter pay in three of the four local districts/departments is higher than the Carbondale Fire District, as are the salaries paid to chiefs, deputy chiefs and ďŹ nancial ofďŹ cers.

The survey was requested by board members earlier in the year, as a way to determine how the Carbondale Fire District ranks compared to others in terms of salaries, given that ofďŹ cials have long been concerned that Carbondale has trained ďŹ re ďŹ ghters only to see them leave the CVFPD and go to work for other, nearby districts where the pay is somewhat higher.

The Carbondale district covers roughly 320 square miles of territory in the Roaring Fork and Crystal River valleys, generally encompassing an area from Spring Valley and Missouri Heights in the north, to the town of Marble in the south, and including the communities of Carbondale and Redstone.

As of November, according to a report by Deputy Fire Chief Ron Goodwin, the district this year had responded to more than 1,000 calls for service. These included 577 emergency medical service incidents (58 of those were motor vehicle accidents); 59 ďŹ re calls (including such things as gas leaks, fuel spills, carbon monoxide alarms and actual ďŹ res); more than 140 ďŹ re-alarm calls that did not involve actual ďŹ res; and 284 â&#x20AC;&#x153;service and good-intent responsesâ&#x20AC;? that covered such things as smoke/odor checks, assistance to citizens and cancellations of calls en route from the station.

Talk of a property tax hike has become the main focus of these discussions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the reality is, we need more revenues and more resources to tackle some of these problems,â&#x20AC;? the mayor said at Tuesdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meeting.

The town already has a couple of different property taxes in place, including a 1.5-mill levy to pay off earlier street improvements and costs of creating parking for local residents and businesses, as well as two separate mill levies (1.75 mills, and 2.094 mills) that provide revenues for the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s general fund.

But with ongoing capital maintenance costs valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, and a wish list of capital projects that would cost more than $3 million, the town is feeling strapped for cash.

According to Town Manager Jay Harrington, a property tax increase of 3 mills would generate around $390,000 per year, and in three years or more could add up to enough money to take on a large capital project.

After considerable discussion, the trustees agreed that there should be a ballot question in April, at the same time as a trustee election, that asks voters to approve a 3-mill tax hike with a 10-year sunset clause.

McBride Africa Internship doubles its sponsorships Sopris Sun Staff Report Entering it’s fourth year of sponsoring Roaring Fork Valley student travel to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in northeastern Kenya, the McBride Africa Internship is doubling the number of students it will sponsor in 2016, according to a press release.

Building on the success of the previous three years, the internship will make two, 14-day trips in 2016, covering twothirds of each students’ costs.

“Words cannot describe how thankful I am for the experience … “ wrote Roaring Fork High School senior Lyle Luckett in a letter to the organizers. I was most certainly opened up to a whole new world filled with excitement and grandeur.

Carl Wright, a junior at Glenwood Springs High School who went on the second trip, wrote “I learned more … in the two weeks the we were together then I could have in six months of school. I get asked about our travels on a daily basis and I always find myself at a lack for words trying to describe the trip.”

Previous to coming to Ironbridge, Cole served in management roles with Aspen Ski Co., and Up the Creek Bar and Grill in Vail.

As a manager with Elk Camp restaurant in Snowmass and Element 47 at the Little Nell in Aspen, Cole cultivated an extensive and unique beverage menu, while also leading a team of restaurant personnel that was charged with working in a customer-focused, fast-paced environment.

Obituary Colton Everett Mingledorff 1993-2015 Colton (“Colt”) Everett Mingledorff, 22, passed away in Boulder, Colorado, on Dec. 4, 2015. He was born on Aug. 22, 1993 in Savannah, Georgia, to Ross Mingledorff and Carol Rothrock.

In addition, during the meeting the board voted to: • Accept audited financial statements for fiscal year 2014-15. The college is required by statute to have an external audit performed annually.

• Certify the college’s mill levy of 3.997. This mill levy in the college’s tax district has not changed since 1999.

This action included moving $3 million into the college’s facilities fund and $1.7 million into its capital fund.

• Approve a resolution for a grant application through the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative.

• Approve the submission of a Garfield County Federal Mineral Lease District grant application, in partnership with the Garfield County Public Library, for the construction build out of the Cooper Commons second-floor space in downtown Glenwood Springs adjacent to the college’s central administration offices.

• Approve a hospital provider fee resolution, which has been adopted by the Colorado Commission for Higher Education and numerous public colleges in Colorado. State legislation on this fee is expected to be brought forward in 2016.

Colorado Mountain College’s Board of Trustees held its December meeting Monday at the college’s Glenwood Center on Blake Avenue in Glenwood Springs.

The board certified the results from the Nov. 3 election. Trustees Ken Brenner (Steamboat Springs/ Routt County), Pat Chlouber (Leadville/Lake County) and Kathy Goudy (Carbondale/East Garfield County) were re-elected, and Patricia Theobald, past chairperson of the CMC Foundation, was elected as a new trustee from Summit County. Trustees also re-elected the following board officers: President Glenn Davis (Eagle County), Secretary Chlouber and Treasurer Brenner, according to a press release.

The trustees approved a land exchange of one acre with the town of Breckenridge upon completion of inspection and other conditions. Both the town and the college are looking into the land exchange so that Breckenridge can include the acre in its master housing plan, and the college can complete a conceptual plan for its Breckenridge location that would include the exchanged acre.

The town of Breckenridge had previously donated the land upon which the CMC-Breckenridge campus currently sits. At the college’s request, the CMC Foundation took ownership of the land to expedite financing in 2007 that made campus construction possible. The college retains full control of the campus facility. Any future use of the exchanged property will be considered separately by the CMC Board of

Former Wyly Art Center now e Art Base Sopris Sun Staff Report The Wyly Art Center has changed its name to The Art Base, according to a press release.

The Art Base will provide a base of operations for artists through education, exhibitions and events that support and stimulate the vitality of the community, and foster creative expression for all ages and abilities. It’s website and logo will evolve over the next few months.

The Art Base’s location has not changed.

It is still located in historic downtown Basalt, serving the Roaring Fork community of artists and art enthusiasts.

Agreeing with the new name, the Wyly family said it is pleased to have the main campus exhibition space named the Charles J. Wyly Gallery.

“We are extremely grateful for Charles and Dee Wyly and their generous spirit, benevolence and unwavering commitment to the community and the arts,” said Art Base Executive Director Genna Moe. The Art Base is embarking on a five-year strategic growth plan that will incorporate three new programs — Art Share (an online

rental gallery of visual artworks to bring local and regional artworks into homes and businesses), Art Commons (an affordable shared social studio space), and Art as Healing (a valley-wide collaboration with art, health and recovery).

“The art of a community becomes its self-portrait,” said Art Base Board President Jay Magidson. “A gift to fund our strategic plan and the implementation of three new programs will enable us to ensure our existing programs remain accessible to all ages and abilities. An investment in the arts supports local jobs, generates tax revenues, promotes tourism and strengthens the community fabric.”

On a related note, Vallee Noone received the Wyly Open Winner (WOW) award at the recent Wyly Open, and received $250.

The Glenwood Springs Branch Library is serving up a big treat to local art afficianodos and history buffs. Through December, the library is showing 11 original paintings by the late Jack Roberts, many of which are among his best known. Roberts lived in the Glenwood Springs area and in Redstone from the 1950s until his death in 2000 at the age of 79. By Barbara Dills Sopris Sun Correspondent Thunder River Theatre Companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (TRTCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s) latest production, â&#x20AC;&#x153;BakersďŹ eld Mist,â&#x20AC;? packs plenty of raw emotion and humor into its short 80-minute run time. There is no intermission to break the spell created by the castâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two characters, who only step from the cluttered trailer home where the play is set a few brief times â&#x20AC;&#x201D; out the front door and nearly into the audienceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lap.

The play is directed by Corey Simpson, TRTCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new Associate Artistic Director. Aspen native Trary Maddelone (Eleanor in last seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s production of â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Lion in Winterâ&#x20AC;?) plays 50-something Maude Gutman, a pottymouthed, unemployed bartender and devoted dumpster diver whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lived in the same BakersďŹ eld, California trailer park for 33 years. As the play opens, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s receiving an expected visitor, a haughty art expert from New York named Lionel Percy. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s summoned him to evaluate a painting she picked up in a thrift shop for $3 (after talking the price down from $5!). She bought it as a gag for a friend and then began to think she might actually have a treasure.

The playâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two characters could hardly be more different â&#x20AC;&#x201D; one earthy and down on her luck, the other pretentiously impressed with himself and his own resume. Lionel is aptly played by well-known TRTC member, Mike Monroney, last seen as Claudius in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hamlet,â&#x20AC;? who also directed Maddelone in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lion,â&#x20AC;? two plays set just about as far from a BakersďŹ eld trailer park as you can get.

Maude is convinced her painting is a rare Jackson Pollock worth millions (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mistâ&#x20AC;? in the playâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s title refers to the Pollock painting â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lavender Mistâ&#x20AC;?), and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to assume, given her circumstances, that sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s looking for a windfall from her odd thrift shop ďŹ nd. Her motivations for Lionelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s visit â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and, in fact, her character in general â&#x20AC;&#x201D; turn out to be much more complex as the play advances. The arrogant Mr. Percy offers the audience other surprises, as Maudeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crude honesty and directness begin to break him down.

The repartee between the two actors is peppered with hilarious one-liners and furthered by bottles of Jack Daniels, which Maude pours freely for the initially prim Mr.

Percy. A play that starts out about a junk store painting turns into an exploration of authenticity itself, even as it probes that age-old question, â&#x20AC;&#x153;what is art?â&#x20AC;? and makes us wonder who gets to decide anyway.

As regular TRTC audience members might expect, the set for the production is great. Interesting and inviting, this one is particularly well stocked with the sorts of things Maude might have brought home from the thrift shops and dumpsters she haunts. The acting is also very ďŹ ne. Maddelone is a spunky, engaging Maude, though not terribly convincing as the boozer the script possibly intends. Monroney seems in his element as Lionel Percy. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stunning how both characters evolve from somewhat wooden â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and utterly predictable â&#x20AC;&#x201D; archetypes in the opening moments to authentic, if troubled, people with compassion for each other by the playâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s end. One imagines they might even stay friends after this unusual encounter, despite their differences of opinion about the authenticity of the â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Maude Gutman painting that brought them together in the ďŹ rst place. in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bakersfield Mistâ&#x20AC;?

Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have to see the play to ďŹ nd out who scores the win on that front.

Playwright Stephen Sachsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; play opened in 2010 to rave reviews at the Fountain Theater in Los Angeles, where he also serves as Co-Artistic Director. In her Los Angeles Times review, F. Kathleen Foley wrote, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sachsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; play touches chords from the profoundly personal to the intensely intellectual â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a perfect marriage of emotion and ideas that is rare indeed.â&#x20AC;? The play went on to win the 2012 Elliot Norton Award for Best New Play. In this reviewerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opinion, those accolades are well deserved.
