’Tis the season to be conscious

By Amy Kimberly I eagerly hit some “outlet” stores last month … itching for new duds. I needed cool pants, fashionable shirts and sweaters and socks. Surely I would be smitten with all the choices! I ended up coming away empty handed, except for a couple pairs of socks.

What happened to me?

I love fashion.

Shopping was a favorite past time. In the old days, I could be found at Walmart stocking up on cheap, cute clothes and plastics, was a deep fan of Maurice’s and had been found at many a mall spending money happily.

That is no longer the case.

Sometimes I yearn for those days when I could throw money down on cheap stuff made by Chinese children in rough conditions, but the satisfaction is fleeting, and the quality creates a very disposable item that usually lasts less than a year. I know too much now and what I know is this: I no longer enjoy spending my money on something I will have to throw away sooner, rather than later. This can really cut into the shopping experience.

Luckily I have discovered another way — investing in my community. That kind of shopping is truly joyful, whether it be a downtown shop featuring well-made things,

second hand stores or items made regionally.

I feel good about spending my money and believe me; I don’t have much of it. That is why it is doubly important to spend it wisely.

Remember those socks I bought at the outlets? I wore them once and they began to fall apart. Even in the “old” days of cheap shopping things lasted a little longer. All that experience has done is leave me feeling saddened by the lower standards we allow in life, and it is those standards that are hurting our environment, health and well being.

I had another shopping experience a few months back. I bought a piece of art from SHOP LOCAL page 17

Things have changed Dear Editor: It could be that things have changed drastically. When I was secretary at the Carbondale Elementary School, we had what the state of Colorado said was a “Fast Track English Class.”

This class was to put any child that didn’t speak the English language on the fast track to learning. This meant that the kindergarten and/or the first-grade teacher taught those students that needed to learn English on the

fast track to learning ASAP. This was mandated by the state of Colorado.

Teachers from first grade on up didn’t need to concern themselves with students using any other language. They learned English immediately. Is that considered an obsolete class at present? I would think it would give teachers a boost to not have to worry about any student not knowing English in classes and their ability to assimilate into the classroom? Is that our problem? Or is it just that the parents and the entire family of the

student doesn’t feel a need to learn the English language at all. English is the spoken language in America.

Light Up Carbondale closes out First Fridays 2013 Sopris Sun Staff Report It takes six miles of wire, 682 rolls/strands and 30,000 individual lights to ofďŹ cially light up Carbondale. Throw in privately owned lights and what do you get?

Light Up Carbondale, as the 2013 First Friday close out on Dec. 6.

Organized by the Carbondale Recreation Department, and the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities, the evening shapes up like this, according to press releases.

Youngsters can visit with Santa and give him their wish lists in the warmth of the Third Street Center’s Round Room at two different times. The ďŹ rst time frame will be from 3 to 4 p.m. and is reserved for children up to age 5. Santa returns to the Round Room from 6:30 until 8 p.m. for the older kids.

In between those times, Santa will take to his sleigh and really get around. His ďŹ rst sleigh stop will be at the tall spruce tree at Main Street and Weant Boulevard near the Forest Service building at around 5:15 p.m. Crystal River Elementary School’s Choir Carolers will be riding Santa’s sleigh and belting out “Oh Christmas Tree.â€?

When everyone is in the spirit, Santa will actually light the tree.

Santa’s reindeer couldn’t make the long trip from the North Pole, so the local biking community will lead his sleigh from the Third Street Center to Main Street then back again in the Parade of Bike Lights. Bikes will be decked out in LED lights (riders with helmets can start prepping their bikes at the Third Street Center at 4 p.m.)

This parade will head down Main Street at 5:30 p.m. to Fourth Street Plaza with the CRES carolers singing their repertoire from atop Santa’s sleigh. When Santa reaches the plaza the holiday spirit is expected to reach its crescendo and St. Nick will magically illuminate all the lights on Main Street. After that, at Fourth Street Plaza, there’ll be cookies, hot chocolate, marsh mellow roasting at the bonďŹ re and sing-along caroling.

At 6 p.m. the Parade of Bike Lights continues with Santa in tow to the Third Street Center. Santa’s sleigh (technically it’s a atbed truck with lights and holiday music) will be making free shuttle loops from the Third St. Center to Fourth Street Plaza while he’s taking orders inside the Third Street Center.

In other First Friday action: • CCAH’s Deck the Walls show and sale continues at the R2 Gallery. WEDNESDAY Nov. 13 At 6:27 p.m. police responded to a report of indecent exposure at a downtown bar. Police determined a man had apparently tried to climb one of the tree trunks inside the bar and when he did so his pants fell down, “revealing a complete lack of underwear.�

MONDAY Nov. 18 At 5:42 p.m. police observed a green Mustang accelerate quickly and ďŹ shtail onto Highway 133 from the 7/Eleven parking lot. They contacted the driver, who said that his clutch was bad and it got stuck when he was turning. He was issued a citation.

WEDNESDAY Nov. 20 At 11:04 and 11:23 a.m. police issued back-to-back citations to speeders in the 15 mph school zone on Snowmass Drive. Both motorists were going at least 10 mph over the limit.

Sopris Sun Staff Report The Center for Independence, which administers state and federal programs for the disabled and others, recently opened an office in Room 36 of the Third Street Center.

“CFI’s services and programs are designed to enable people with disabilities to learn, retain and regain the skills necessary for independent living,” said a CFI press release.

CFI’s core services include: disability advocacy, information and referral, peer counseling, support groups, classes and independent skills training, according to the press release.

The Center for Independence’s Western Slope headquarters is in Grand Junction, with satellite offices in Carbondale and Montrose. CFI is a 501c(3) nonprofit, serving the Western Slope since 1982.

In 2012-13, CFI served more than 400 individuals, with the majority living in Mesa County. “CFI’s goal for the future is to expand to people with disabilities living within the unserved and underserved rural territories of our catchment area,” the press release continued.

CFI is funded by state and federal performance contract grants, which account for 80-85 percent of the non-profits annual funding, according to the press release. The contracts are non-competitive and are voted on for renewal each year if contract standards are met. The remaining funding consists of private donations, grants, earned income, investments and special events. CFI is able to provide its core services at no cost to people with disabilities.

Currently, the United States Department of Rehabilitation Services Administration has designed 12 counties on the Western Slope to CFI.

Snow notes Bicyclist of the Week honors go to the west-bound middle-age guy in red, seen near White House Pizza pedaling into the teeth of Wednesday morning’s snow storm with his own teeth clinched — on a girl’s bike with the handlebars basket full of stuff. On a related note: as of Wednesday morning at 11 a.m., the snow depth on Charlotte Grahman’s patio table in Marble was 11 inches, and the deck depth was 18 inches.

There’s a 1,000-foot elevation difference between Carbondale and the Spring Gulch Nordic ski area. So, if Carbondale’s elevation is 6,181 then Spring Gulch must be 7,181.

It’s time to go grab a free or store-bought local calendar for 2014. At least three of such calendars are being sold, hawked and distributed around town. Alpine Bank’s 2014 calendar has a “Then and now” theme, with old photos juxtaposed with new ones. The towns include Basalt, Eagle, Denver, Telluride, New Castle, Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, Steamboat Springs, Durango, Frisco, Montrose, and Snowmass Vil-

lage. It would be a misnomer to warn the calendars “won’t last long” because if displayed or stored properly they should last hundreds of years. Supplies are limited, however. Coredination moves to Bridges, triples its space

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer When Anthony and Alexandra Jerkunica opened Coredination: A Movement Studio in Carbondale in 2004, they introduced the Roaring Fork Valley to a new approach of offering pilates, yoga and ballet instruction under one roof.

“The three (disciplines) compliment and support each other,” Alexandra told The Sopris Sun. The husband/wife team expanded to the Third Street Center three years ago and have now moved to the Bridges Center on Sopris Avenue.

“We’re in the west wing and we’ve tripled our space.”

That space is the former Carbondale Middle School cafeteria, which the Jerkunicas remodeled and upgraded to include floor to ceiling mirrors, ballet bars, pilates equipment and more.

The public is invited to tour Coredination, meet the Jerkunicas and other instructors, taste some treats, get a sneak preview of Bonedale Ballet, view some demonstrations and videos, and even dance a bit if so moved, starting with a ribbon cutting at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 6.

“We’ll probably have some ballet music in the background,” Alexandra said. “If someone is tempted to get out on the floor, that’s OK.” Alexandra, who was born in Grazz, Austria, met Anthony when they were professional COREDINATION page 8

She first adopted pilates as a form of cross training and to help with balance. “It (pilates) was necessary in prolonging my career,” she states on the Coredination website. She completed her masters program at the Pilates Center in Boulder in 2010.

Anthony has danced professionally in California, New York and Colorado. He is a certified Vinyasa Flow yoga instructor and is registered with the Yoga Alliance.

“Through the disciplines of ballet, pilates and yoga, we strive to educate and inspire our students, so they can move through life with grace, power and flexibility,” their website continues.

Alexandra is down to earth and easy to talk to. She explained that she and Anthony were happy with their space at the Third Street Center but their lease was expiring this fall, and last spring they learned that the Bridges Center space might be available.

“We (now) have more room for jumps and leaps, and larger classes … . The ceilings are enormously high … there’s plenty of breathing room. Our eyes are still adjusting to the space.”

The Jerkunicas first heard about Carbondale through Anthony’s friends when they lived in Orange County, California.

Through the years they’ve gotten to better know and appreciate Carbondale.

“We love the artists and creative community … we love being part of this.”

RFHS reverses trend: enrollment at all-time high Up 17 percent over 2011-12

By Will Grandbois Sopris Sun Correspondent With the October count tallied and reviewed, enrollment at Roaring Fork High School is at an all time high of 335 students, according to school district ofďŹ cials.

That’s up 8 percent from last year and up 17 percent from the decade low of 290 in 2011-12. It also marks the ďŹ rst time since 2007 that the incoming class at the high school exceed the combined exiting classes of Carbondale Middle and Carbondale Community School.

The ďŹ gures suggest the school might be regaining momentum as a choice for students and their parents, and also has immediate implications for academic funding. “I hope this is an upward spiral, RFHS Principal Drew Adams told The Sopris Sun. “I think for the size of enrollment and FTE, we’ve put together a phenomenal program.

The offerings are on par with some of the bigger schools.�

FTE (full time equivalent) is a key number for determining how many teachers a school is allotted; the number of students in the October count determines how many full or part time employees the state will pay for.

For the past 10 years, the FTE number has remained fairly steady, leaving the school in a sort of uneasy equilibrium. With no restriction on which district schools stu-

dents can attend, many Carbondale kids opt for alternatives. For example, in 2005, a total of 102 students continued on from Carbondale Middle and Carbondale Community schools, but only 81 enrolled at Roaring Fork in the fall.

Specialized offerings such as Aspen’s International Baccalaureate (IB) program, CRMS’s outdoor education, and Bridges’ alternative format seem unlikely candidates for the 21-student discrepancy in 2005, with fairly constant enrollment from around the valley. In particular, according

to Adams, students from Ross Montessori and the Waldorf school tend to opt for Glenwood High School, which with 804 students accounts for about half the district’s high schoolers. Meanwhile, despite a fairly similar program in terms of scale and content, Basalt High School enrollment peaked at around the same time Roaring Fork’s was lowest, suggesting a fair amount of competition from that direction.

Potentially misguided Roaring Fork High School’s unique demographics is a common, but potentially misguided, explanation for why Carbondale students opt for other schools. Al-

though RFHS is consistently competitive in standardized testing for students for whom English is a ďŹ rst language, results may be lower for non-native speakers because the tests are administered in English. This can produce misleading scores for schools with many recent immigrants. This fails to explain the recent resurgence in enrollment, however, as the ratio between Anglos and Latinos has held fairly steady at about 45 percent to 55 percent respectively over the past ďŹ ve years.

William O. Fender (Bill), was born in August 1926. He died early Thanksgiving morning at his home in Carbondale, Colorado. He had arranged for the donation of his body to Science Care.

Downvalley authors sign books in Aspen Sopris Sun Staff Report Several downvalley authors and photograpehrs — including Darrell Munsell, Charlotte Graham, Linda Lafferty, Meredith Ogilby, Paul Andersen and Auden Schendler — have been invited to the Aspen Historical Society’s Holiday Cookie Exchange and Book Signing at the Hotel Jerome from 4 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 10.

“This (event) continues a long-standing relationship between the town’s crown jewel and the non-profit,” said an Aspen Historical Society spokeswoman. “The annual affair offers a chance to meet and support local authors in an intimate setting, while snacking on homemade cookies.”

The cookie exchange portion of the evening means that everyone is invited to bring cookies and swap them out for different kinds. “It’s a Roaring Fork Valley tradition that’s been around for several decades. People love sharing their recipes and learning about new treats.

And, they like eating them too,” the spokeswoman continued.

The Living Room bar at the Hotel Jerome will also be open so that people can purchase drinks and food.

More than 25 local writers, photographers and illustrators have been invited to the book signing. Others include: Bruce Berger, Johnny Boyd, Angel Cusick, Art & Allison Daily, Mary Eshbaugh Hayes, Amy Hawes, Jane Jenkins, Vince Lahey, George Madsen and Cindy Madsen Buck, Jay Magidson, Barry Mink, Sandy Munro, Brooke Newman, Doug Paley, Charles Paterson, Lexie Potamkin, Barbara Reese, C.W. UDC on schedule; public input slated for February EDITOR’S NOTE — Carbondale is in the process of updating and consolidating land use regulations into a unified development code (UDC). This column from the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) continues a series of updates that will continue throughout the 16-month process. The unified development code (UDC) process is well under way. At the end of September, the town kicked off the process with oneon-one interviews with various citizens and groups.

Clarion (our consultant for the project) has collected responses to our zoning survey on our website, www.carbondaleudc.com. Thank you to all of you who filled out a response to the zoning survey. If you missed it, you can still fill it out. And the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) and staff have been working diligently on providing comments to Clarion Associates. P&Z will be collectively going section by section through the code. We’re looking for the good, the bad, and the ugly. That is, we’re looking at what sections of the code work, what sections don’t and what is just downright contradictory.

After all, the purpose of the UDC is to consolidate the five or more sections of the land use/zoning code into one section.

How will this new organization and consolidation be achieved? The first step was to analyze the comprehensive plan, existing code and other town plans, policies and ordinances, as well as collect information from the interviews, zoning survey and feedback from P&Z. Now Clarion Associates is consolidating and sorting through all of this feedback.

Then Clarion will produce an annotated outline. The purpose of the annotated outline is to allow staff, elected and appointed officials

and the public an opportunity to review the overall arrangement of the proposed revisions before the actual code drafting begins.

The annotated outline will set out the proposed structure of the UDC in detail, providing commentary explaining the purpose and scope of each new or amended provision and how it relates to the existing Land and Development Code.

The first draft of this annotated outline will be reviewed

by P&Z and staff to provide substantive feedback to Clarion and identify any factual or major issues that should be adjusted. This first draft of the annotated outline is expected in mid- to late February. We’ll keep you updated as this gets closer. Then, Clarion will revise the annotated outline with the feedback from P&Z and staff. The next step is to seek public comment. This is where your public participation will be critical. The aim of this is to gain consensus on the general scope and parameters of the issues to be addressed in the drafting of the UDC. This is a crucial step toward ensuring that the remainder of the process proceeds smoothly and effectively.

the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities’ R2 Gallery. It was created by S.A.W. artists as part of a collaboration. I never thought I could buy art. It was outside of my income, but CCAH has a layaway plan that made it affordable. That painting hangs on my wall in my living room and every day I derive joy from it. I feel deep pride that I chose to support my friends, invest my money locally and receive a beautiful piece of art for many to enjoy. It truly is “the gift that keeps on giving.”

Letters continued om page 2 children in the public school system. We OK’ed taxes on pot we ďŹ gured only the fringe element of society would be impacted by and would beneďŹ t our children in the public schools.

The majority of us voted no on a tax measure that covers the cost for ďŹ re and emergency services in the Carbondale Fire District. Now I must admit the measure was perhaps presented poorly to the public and it may have had a better chance of passing had it included a sunset clause like the one presented and passed two years ago. I propose to the roughly 40 percent of the voting public who were in favor of the tax assessment to rise to the occasion and pay the tax voluntarily. I realize this is not how we generally operate when it comes to taxes, but it is legal.

We can still deduct our “contribution� the same as other itemized deductions.

The ďŹ re district is in a precarious situation, having to create a budget with signiďŹ cantly reduced revenue. The proposed recommendation does not eliminate these problems for the ďŹ re district. They will not be able to account for these pledges, will not be able to send friendly reminders to the public and will only be able to include the money in the budget after it is received.

We who recognize the value of this public service can proactively show our support by contributing our portion of the tax.

Hopefully by the next election cycle the public will be better informed about the services provided by the ďŹ re district and the impact of revenue loss, and a better proposition will be presented that is more sensitive to the

public’s concern for additional taxes.

Instead of just sitting back and enjoying no increase on our tax bill, we have the opportunity to think about what is best for the community. We have the freedom to support a public service we all depend upon.

served that many of the new students who enrolled in August were entirely new to the district. The RE-1 School District as a whole saw an uptick in population when RE-2 School District (RiďŹ&#x201A;e) went to a four day school week last year. Notably, the numbers are not simply the result of a large incoming class at Roaring Fork â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the school has a fairly typical distribution of 101 freshman, 90 sophomores, 83 juniors, and 66 seniors.

The trend, therefore, seems to have been in the works for a while.

There is a long list of programs that might be attracting students back to Roaring Fork. There are 53 students currently enrolled in University of Colorado or Colorado Mountain College classes, and the school offers several Advanced Placement courses, which Adams said offer a strong college credit return compared to Aspenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s IB program.

The Roaring Fork High School has also capitalized on its multilingual base, offering advanced Spanish courses for both native and non-native speakers; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Rams Unidos organization also provides multicultural programming for students. For faculty, a big problem is often the cost of living. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I actually found housing for several of them,â&#x20AC;? Adams noted.

The Roaring Fork High School still has a lot of room to grow. The capacity of the current building is 400 and the design allows for expansions that would push that number as high as 800.

TAC FIT: A Basalt gym with a higher purpose

By S. Michael Jundt The Aspen Clinic CEO Amanda Wagner joined forces with elite personal trainer Megan Reilly to form TAC FIT, a gym with a higher purpose located on East Valley Road in Basalt. The gym in itself is sensational.

But what separates it from the rest is both its unique curriculum and its caring personnel.

On a recent visit, I was able to spend time with Reilly, whose 20 years in the fitness industry has honed an inspirational example of a healthy mind, body and spirit. Her passion is contagious and her conviction in helping others achieve their goals is rooted in more than her two decades of training.

“Ten years ago I drove off of Independence Pass,” says Reilly. “My car struck a boulder and I was crushed from the impact.”

Reilly suffered trauma to her face, chest and wrist, both of her lungs collapsed. She was strapped to a gurney that kept sliding back and forth into the walls of an ambulance racing the winding road to Leadville, which might appear darkly comedic but was anything but.

“The flight for Life chopper was meeting me in Leadville for emergency transport to Denver,” says Reilly. But in retrospect certain parts (of the incident) did play

like theatre.”

The road to recovery was neither simple nor fast but Reilly is a survivor and not only fought through her recovery but also gained a vast amount of rehabilitation knowledge that she utilizes today while assisting others with their rehab.

“The improvements in physical therapy since I was injured are phenomenal,” she says. “The state-of-theart equipment that we have here at TAC FIT and the specific purpose machines that focus on an individual’s precise need would have cut my recovery time by one third. Forest Service opens Road 300 for tree cutting Sopris Sun Staff Report The Aspen-Sopris Ranger District will open National Forest Service Road 300 off of Four Mile Road for Christmas tree cutting on weekends, according to a press release.

“The White River National Forest Travel Management Plan closes many forest roads, including RFSR 300 beyond Four Mile Park, after Nov. 22,” said a Forest Service spokeswoman. “This winter, the gate at Four Mile Park will remain open … on weekends in December.”

Motorists are advised to drive cautiously as they may encounter logging trucks from nearby timber removal operations. Conditions associated with winter travel on forest roads may be encountered. These include, but are not limited to: heavy snow, snowplowing, logging trucks and other maintenance vehicles; narrow roads; soft shoulders; and changing road conditions. The White River National Forest does not recommend travel on roads that have not been recently plowed.

Personal use Christmas tree tags will be available from ranger district offices of the White River National Forest through Dec. 24. Christmas tree cutting is allowed in most areas on the WRNF with the following exceptions: wilderness areas, scenic byways, commercial timber sales areas, recreation and ski areas, administrative areas, and Glenwood Canyon. Trees may not be cut within 100 feet of any road or trail. Maps showing where Christmas tree cutting is allowed are available at all offices where permits are sold. Permits cost $10 each and may be purchased with cash, check, credit card, or money order. Trees must be less than 15-feet-tall from the stump, may not be greater than six inches in diameter at the base of the tree, and the stump height should be no greater than six inches. There is a maximum of five trees per individual. Trees are for personal use only and cannot be resold. The tags must be attached to the tree prior to cutting and must be left on the tree until it arrives at its final destination.

As a reminder, Summer and Winter Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) have been produced for the entire Forest, and show forest roads, trails and areas that have been designated for over-snow motor vehicle use. These maps are free, and are available at ranger stations or on the Forest Service website.

White River National Forest staffers will be educating the public about travel management and the MVUMs. Forest Service staff will also respond to reports of individuals in closed areas. Violations may result in a written citation.
