redit-card giant American Express is apparently the big gun behind the Small Business Saturday promotion on Nov. 30 and several Carbondale businesses are right there in the mix.

According to an American Express website, those businesses include: Main Street Gallery & the Framer, Miser’s Mercantile, Strange Imports, Crystal River Spas, Casual Culture, Ace Hardware, Aloha Mountain Cyclery, Independence Run & Hike, Main Street Spirits and the Roaring Fork Valley Co-op.

The deal from the American Express end is a bit complicated so read closely. Support Zanca program Dear Editor: I really enjoyed the article about the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program and their partnership with KDNK community radio. I appreciate KDNK’s commitment to local youth and I want to thank KDNK for encouraging youth to get involved and for giving kids a voice.

My son, Callum, has been involved in the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program (AZYEP) for about two years and he broadcasts a show after school every Monday from 3.30 to 4:30 p.m. I can truly say that I have seen many positive changes as a result of his participation in AZYEP. This program builds self-confidence and gives youth a chance to express themselves.

Callum is one of 25 young people, age 818, from a diversity of backgrounds and cultures, who take turns to broadcast the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program’s weekly programs on KDNK. The program also partners with local teachers to record and broadcast work that students are creating at school, as well as offering an accredited high school class where students learn the basics of broadcast journalism. Through these classroom projects, more than 200 students get to be on the radio each year.

To continue to provide transformational experiences for local youth, the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program must raise funds; right now AZYEP is working to raise $10,000 by Dec.15.

Check out Nuval Dear Editor: Imagine: A mother walks into a grocery store, cruises the aisles and quickly and easily selects what she knows without a doubt is the healthiest, most nutritious food for her family.

Her growing children will dine on brain-andbody-nurturing food, full of the phytonutrients and macronutrients that will ensure the very best developmental potential.

Sound like a fantasy? As a mother of three young girls, I have often felt frustrated in my quest to fulfill this fantasy to the fullest. I read nutrition labels and labored over the meaning of saturated fat, sodium, carbohydrates and vitamins. Is less sodium better even though

this peanut butter combines it with higher saturated fat? Is higher fiber better in general, or should I opt for the loaf of bread with no high fructose corn syrup? How does this loaf compare to that loaf? How does this peanut butter compare to that peanut butter? Grocery shopping can be exhausting and bewildering! Fortunately, thanks to a crack team of scientists (many of them parents), the fantasy is now a reality.

Few have heard of the nutritional grading system called NuVal, but it’s an empowering tool for anyone that needs to make healthy choices for their family. I had not heard of NuVal until I took nutrition at Colorado Mountain College this summer. In this class I learned not only about the chemical components of food and how they work in the body, but also about the current science on nutrition and how NuVal came to be, delivering us from nutritional label paralysis.

Dr. David Katz, of the Yale Griffin Prevention Research Center, was inspired to develop NuVal in response to the disturbing nationwide trends of increasing rates of obesity, diabetes and other associated diseases.

He also realized that nutrition was so confusing that even his wife, a neuroscientist, was frustrated with conflicting nutritional label information. “Why should it be so hard to choose the best loaf of bread?” was her essential question. A good question, her husband agreed, and if it stumped his brilliant wife it must be stumping many other people.

He set out to simplify the conclusion hidden inside the nutritional label, and with scientists from many disciplines — endocrinology, dietetics, epidemiology, cardiovascular disease, weight control, and pediatric nutrition — created an algorithm that rates food products on a scale of 1-100, with 100 being the best nutritional value, and 1 being the lowest nutritional value. Foods that receives a score of 100 are things like: broccoli, spinach, Brussels sprouts, romaine lettuce, green beans, blueberries and carrots. Food in the 1-10 range are Kashi Strawberry Fields cereal (10), Keebler Townhouse Bistro Multigrain Crackers (3), shortening (1), and gluten free Glutino Pretzel Twists (2).

NuVal was developed independently of food interest groups, agricultural lobbies and manufacturers. Even the hospital where Dr. Katz conducts his research is a not-for-profit institution, with no industry ties. This reassured me, indicating that the rating system is based on actual science.

How do those loaves of bread compare? It turns out there is a wide range of nutritional value, as revealed by this quick comparison: Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain Bread receives a NuVal score of 36, Wonder cinnamon raisin bread scores 11, and Arnold natural flax and fiber bread comes in at 48.

The great thing about using NuVal to help with your grocery decisions is that the NuVal score is posted right on the store shelf label.

ing. This makes it easy to compare products, and if you’re in the mood, to choose skim milk (91) over 2 percent (55).

There is a lot of conflicting health information related to nutrition, and it can be overwhelming to decipher labels and the difference between one product and another.

Now, you can happily tune out the “health” claims on the product packaging and read the NuVal label instead.

Easy. Fact. Not fantasy.

Obama gets his way Dear Editor: For all of the suspense and drama in Washington, we all knew that Obama would get his way. He did. We have a bunch of sheep being led by a slick wolf in clothing.

He kept telling you that the U.S.A. was going to default on its debts. No it wasn’t going to default on its debts. What it boils down to is if the debt ceiling isn’t raised then Obama and Congress can’t spend any more money than is coming into the Treasury from U.S. taxpayers. Now that’s what it means. If you don’t think so, look it up.

So now, all of Congress can continue to spend more than your taxpayer dollars on themselves, We have a top-heavy government and it’s going to stay that way until we vote out the members of Congress who have their OWN golden parachute to retire on. They have opted out themselves from the new health care system as soon as they voted on it and it passed. They ask Obama if they could opt out of it and he told them yes. So nobody in Congress is covered by the new health care bill that they have put into affect. So it won’t matter to them if you don’t have a job. It won’t matter to them if you can’t afford to buy health insurance. It won’t matter to them if your employer refuses to pay for your health insurance and cuts you to half time or you lose your job because its been mandated that you have insurance, so now you have to find the cheapest insurance premium you can and you may not have any way to pay for it, but Congress is looking the other way and you can plead all you want to over it.

You will get fined $90 if you don’t have it

by January. I truly believe that there is not one government official in Washington that should be re-elected. This is the most corrupted government in history. We need to start from the top and work our way down. Everyone of them needs to be fired. We need to lay off at least 22 million government workers. That is how many there are besides all of the 532 senators and representatives and one useless president. We have approximately 163,000 new jobs in this country. How in the world can that few people support all of government? Apparently writing, calling and threatening them hasn’t done any good, because we are the peons and they are the elite. No help there.

Red Hill: An outdoor amenity years in the making And it’s not yet ďŹ nished

By Trina Ortega Sopris Sun Correspondent The 3,000 acres of public land known as Red Hill contains 14.5-miles of established trail for Carbondale area residents to explore, and to play, get ďŹ t and reect in. Like it or not, there’s a reason Carbondale continues to get named in magazines as one of the nation’s coolest towns. The chamber of commerce’s “Basecamp for Adventureâ€? moniker reects what makes this little slice of heaven special, and Red Hill is a signature piece of the recreational draw.

With the recent studies in how to improve pedestrian and cyclist access to Red Hill; the proposed Sutey Land exchange (which could potentially connect an additional 560 acres of public land on the northern portion of Red Hill); and the town’s Gateway Park on the Roaring Fork River, the allure of Red Hill is growing.

The volunteer-run council that helps manage Red Hill estimates that user days per year are in excess of 55,000 and town ofďŹ cials regard the Red Hill recreation area as one of Carbondale’s prized backyard amenities. “Its proximity and offerings allow our community members to enjoy our natural environment in a convenient manner,â€? Mayor Stacey Bernot said. “I’m appreciative to our local partners who continue to work towards the betterment of this area and improving the safety for those that enjoy it. Having Red Hill right outside our door reinforces how Carbondale continues to build on our basecamp brand for so many great recreational opportunities.â€? But before today’s polypropylene-clad trail runners and padded-out mountain bikers tested their aerobic mettle on the high-desert landscape just a mile south of downtown, a lot of volunteer time, paperwork and compromise went into what has become this outdoor wonderland.

From the Utes who migrated from camp to camp in the Elk Mountains to the pioneers, Red Hill has long been an important place for vision quests and wagon routes, as well as wildlife and views of Mt. Sopris and the Roaring Fork and Crystal rivers.

Despite its proximity to town, there are reaches of Red Hill that remain secluded, and people like Davis Farrar recognized that as population grew, the demands on Carbondale’s surrounding public lands would also increase. It was one of the reasons he originally set out in the mid-1990s to help form a management plan for the area.

1979 Farrar moved to Carbondale in 1979 and served as a GarďŹ eld County and town of Carbondale planner. It was during that time that a CRMS outdoor educator, the late Jack Snobble, urged Farrar, as a town representative, to consider how Red Hill was a beneďŹ t to Carbondale citizens. “I didn’t really know much about Red Hill at that point,â€?

Farrar said. Shortly after, town staffers met with BLM reps and signed a memoranda of understanding but not much happened, according to Farrar. They put up a sign, but the

By the mid-90s, Farrar had become more interested in Red Hill; he had bought a mountain bike (two, in fact) from Steve Wolfe, who had a little bike shop in the basement of the Centennial Building on Main Street, and he pedaled up the steep Three Poles Trail. “A friend of mine took me up there, and I thought, ‘This isn’t a mountain bike trail, this is a goat trail.’�

That was Blue Ribbon, one of the main routes that leads to Mushroom Rock and once was even a road. Back then, not many people were hiking or riding mountain bikes on Red Hill. It was frequented by homeless folks and high schoolers looking for something to do on the weekend nights. “When I was ďŹ rst was going up there, Red Hill was the woodsy spot for the high school kids, for their beer parties.

You’d go up, and on a regular basis you’d see remnants of a ďŹ re still burning. You’d ďŹ nd all kinds of gross stuff at Three Poles and further up,â€? Farrar said.

Red Hill plan When he stopped working for Carbondale, Farrar took a year off and decided he wanted put together a plan for Red Hill. He thought the area was “pretty cool� so he set out on foot, knocking on landowners’ doors to get a better feel for all of Red Hill, which did not have any management direction under the Bureau of Land Management. Most Carbondale residents are familiar with the “front side� of Red Hill that

includes the popular Mushroom Rock hike. But the Red Hill land stretches for 3,000 acres in a donut shape around private land up County Road 107. It’s land-locked by private property along Cattle Creek to the north and Crystal Springs Mountain Road to the east, and the Highway 82 corridor on the south and west. Other than a few points of steep, eroded land that kisses Highway 82 near Aspen Glen, the only legal public access is the Three Gulch Trailhead is off of County Road 107 (north of the intersection of Highway 82 and 133). “I clearly remember my ďŹ rst trip up there,â€? recalls Farrar, who knocked on the door of a private landowner and asked if he could set out on foot from her driveway. His goal was to hike up to a ridge and see what was on the northern portion of the BLM land.

It was March 1996 and a fairly big snow year. He hiked up the packed snow on the south-facing slope of the ridge and gained the top in good time. “I get up to the top and look across the back side of the ridge. And I was like, ‘Oh man, this is way cool.’ It was the ďŹ rst time I had looked off into the north side. It was unbelievable.â€?

He recalls fresh mud in the bottom of some mountain lion tracks. When he returned to the landowners’ house, he was bursting with excitement but immediately saw their faces “turn cold� because they knew their secret paradise could be at risk.

Red Hill om page 3 a committee that included landowners and recreationists to come up with a recreation management plan. The plan would include access — all via public land — to that north side. It was a tough battle at times, Farrar says, with landowners writing letters to the federal government and to members of congress to stop any trail development, but the council ultimately gained approval to build the 1.6-mile Elk Traverse that connected to a 4.5-mile loop on the north side.

BLM specialist Brian Hopkins came on the scene in 1997 to work with what was then called the Red Hill Committee to form the plan.

“What the citizens and users wanted had to be meshed with how BLM does land-use planning and considers all these other values, such as wildlife, cultural and historic, grazing,” Hopkins said. The BLM worked with the Red Hill group, Division of Wildlife, county and town governments, and the Colorado Department of Transportation to proceed with amending its land use plan for Red Hill.

The long and laborious process included environmental impact studies, lots of compromise, a ton of paperwork, a governor’s study period, and a signature from the BLM director. But it resulted in Red Hill being reclassified from unmanaged to a “special recreation management area.”

“Yes there’s impacts [of recreational use], but in terms of benefits, there aren’t anymore woodsies up there. There are no more opportunities for someone to leave an open

campfire. That is a huge hazard,” Farrar said, referring to the high school parties. “You can’t drive a vehicle up there, or a motorcycle. All the hobos that lived up there in the drainages up Three Gulch, they don’t like to be around people anyway, but BLM rousted them out.”

Hopkins agrees and notes that even the trails, used largely by mountain bikers leading to the remote north side would not exist. “It likely would have been an area where we would have seen a lot of pioneered trails —

about, from the grassroots, from people who are out there who will live it,” Hopkins said.

The Red Hill Committee morphed into today’s Red Hill Council, a private nonprofit that operates under a new MOU with the BLM. The seven-member council is made up of volunteers, with Farrar standing the test of time and still leading the charge. He says he would like to see the council up to the full 11 members and welcomes more citizens to join.

The BLM also encourages more participation on the council because it relies on that partnership. (The council pays for studies, conducts trail work days, and cleans up the doggie pots, among other duties). Hopkins said the council has been the key entity helping to see through new management policies and will continue in that role.

Police determined a man had apparently tried to climb one of the tree trunks inside the bar and when he did so his pants fell down, “revealing a complete lack of underwear.” mONDAY Nov. 18 At 5:42 p.m. police observed a green Mustang accelerate quickly and fishtail onto Highway 133 from the 7/Eleven parking lot. They contacted the driver, who said that his clutch was bad and it got stuck when he was turning. He was issued a citation.

John and Arlette celebrate 70 years Married on anksgiving Day, 1943

By Illène Pevec Special to The Sopris Sun Lucky for John Lawyer: The U.S. Navy sent him to Brazil for his World War II service in Naval intelligence.

John and Arlette Ondine Carrijo Cord’homme later met at a Carnival party in Santos, Brazil in 1943. The most popular new song was “My Love is a Bald Head.” Due to a teenage bout with scarlet fever, John had lost his hair and was the only young bald head there for people to dance around while they sang. More dances, dinners and flowers followed. John and Arlette married on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 1943 right after Arlette took her final exam in dental surgery that morning. They rode bikes on their weekend honeymoon at Guaruja Beach.

The Navy called John back to the United States and Arlette followed. When the war ended he finished law school and they headed back to Brazil where their first daughter, (me), was born in Rio de Janeiro. The family returned to the U.S. and John practiced law with his father and uncle — three Lawyers in one Indiana law firm.

A National Geographic magazine article about Aspen and the Goethe Bicentennial drew them to Aspen, first to try skiing in the winter of 1952 and then for a summer vacation in a cabin with 4-year-old me. Everyone fell in love with the beauty and cool air. Arlette wanted to move there immediately. John didn’t, and the couple split.

My mother and I came by train to live in Aspen that November; John and Arlette divorced. That might have been the end of my parents’ lives together, but no. John decided to come west, got a job with Shell Oil, moved to Denver and my parents got married again in 1955 with me as the flower girl. My sister, Ruth Margaret Lawyer, was born the next year in Denver and our family was complete.

Always to Aspen While we lived in Denver we always came to Aspen for vacations, so we never lost touch with our friends and the beauty in this mountain valley. In 1970 John and Arlette bought land six miles up the Crystal River Valley and settled on that beautiful mountainside to enjoy Mount Sopris every day. John quit his Denver job and opened his own law practice in Glenwood Springs and eventually became Carbondale’s municipal judge, a job he held for 25 years. Arlette Ondine taught Spanish for Colorado Mountain College and started the Great Books program that she still leads at the library. John taught astronomy and cosmology for CMC and brought many people to his home observatory to view the stars, planets and galaxies in the crystal-clear nights.

In the past decade all my five children — Adriana, Lucien, Olivia, Zuleika and Hamilton Pevec — have come to live with their grandparents at some point. Carbondale has been the family center at my parents’ welcoming home for more than four decades. I returned from Canada to live here, too. My parents welcomed us all and hosted many dinner parties.

This spring, John and Arlette sold their house on the mountainside and moved to town. We celebrated John’s 95th birthday in their new Carbondale home. We will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary with a family Thanksgiving dinner graced by a beautiful view of Mount Sopris with aspen trees framing it.

My parents have nine grandchildren and look forward to welcoming their seventh great-grandchild soon. My sister and her whole family will be here from New York for

Dave Taylor is looking for writers to submit short filmscripts for a Carbondale-based series he has planned that will showcase the personality and characters of the town.

The series will depict the conversations of two main characters: Carb and Dale. One is a “crusty old cowboy” and the other a young artist/hippie/trustafarian type.

“The conversations will most likely take place on a bench, probably on Main Street, with the characters speaking to but rarely looking directly at teach other,” Taylor said in a press release. Other characters might sit between them or come and go during some episodes. “The goal is for each installment to be no more than one minute in length with the dialogue short, concise and to the point. Funny is not a prerequisite, only that scripts are good,” Taylor said.

Once the scripts are gathered, the two characters will be cast, along with any others that are needed. The goal is to start shooting in late spring or summer.

(Re)made in C’dale: Distinguished Boards & Beams Old lumber gets new life

By Nicolette Toussaint Sopris Sun Correspondent America’s history — tons of it — rests in the Distinguished Boards and Beams lumberyard. The timber here comes from old factories and barns all across the United States, a few dating back to before there was a United States.

“Right now we have wood from a 1775 Kentucky chestnut cabin and a barn built in 1890 in Michigan,” DB&B owner Robbie Williams told The Sopris Sun. “We took those buildings down ourselves and numbered all the boards, so they can be put back up again.” The barn was huge: 40-by-70 feet with a roof peak 48 feet high.

The trees harvested to build it were at least 100 years old, so they began their lives around the time when Peter the Great was crowned Czar of Russia.

It would be tough today to find lumber this massive; some beams measure as much two feet square by 36 feet long and weigh more than a ton. The wood is denser than modern lumber because it came from slow-to-mature species in first-growth forests: hardwood oak, elm, ash, hickory and maple. The yard also holds softer woods like Douglas fir, redwood and longleaf heart pine.

Because DB&B relies on scouts across the U.S. to find outdated barns and buildings slated for demolition, nearly all of the wood comes from domestic forests. DB&B remanufactures all of the lumber here in Carbondale.

DB&B’s reclaimed wood is used for flooring, paneling and ceilings in custom homes, restaurants and office projects. It can be seen in the bar at Hattie Thompson’s RECLAIMED LUMBER page 8

Architects and interior designers in the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond prize the lumber because weathering, saw and axe patterns, worm holes and hand-cut mortise and tenon joints give it exceptional character.

Right now, in addition to the Michigan barn, DB&B’s stock includes two complete cabins, redwood salvaged from wine and yeast vats, and white oak reclaimed from a defunct factory — all of it dated before 1910. “Every now and again, we ďŹ nd dates chiseled and signatures into the lumber,â€? Williams said. “We see Roman numerals cut in to tell carpenters how to put a building together. The builders would cut all of the wood and then move it and reassemble it in place.â€?

Although there are environmental beneďŹ ts to recycling old trees, reclaimed lumber can contain rusty nails and hardware. It can host dirt, mold, bacteria and bugs. In addition, many types of wood shrinks and develops “face checking,â€? small cracks that parallel the grain, when lumber is moved from moister areas to Colorado’s dry climate.

To stabilize the wood, DB&B dries its lumber for ďŹ ve to 10 days in one of two kilns. Next, they square up the boards, trimming them to the client’s speciďŹ cations, milling them to consistent depths and adding tongue-and-groove edges that prepare them for second lives as ooring or wall panels.

He offered to housesit for friends in Zentmyer’s hometown and wound up becoming a Carbondale resident.

The company now keeps 14 full-time staffers busy. Three of them, including Zentmyer, run the ofďŹ ce. The rest sort wood for orders; run big, commercial Wood-Mizer saws that can churn out as much 15,000 board feet per run; and create custom millwork for clients.

Williams’s ďŹ rst exposure to reclaimed wood came after a friend who had done a demolition job in Crested Butte suggested, “we should try selling this to people.â€? Soon after, Williams’s brother Brad invited him to help him pull down a New Hampshire barn that had been built in 1780. “We brought the barn back to Carbondale and sold it in pieces,â€? Williams recalls. “We rented some space and stored the barn. That got the inventory started. Then we had a bunch of wood that came out of a big auto factory in the Midwest. Those beams were 17-by-17 inches and 20 feet long. We had ďŹ ve semi loads of them.â€?

Although the auto factory is long gone, Williams still has a piece of the barn. It’s a chunk of weathered wood that holds an inscribed brass plaque and a photo, a commemorative gift to Williams from brother Brad.

Tips for a sustainable winter holiday season lllustration by Sue Gray

By Sue Gray Sopris Sun Contributor As the winter holiday season approaches, it’s more important than ever to think about sustainability.

Americans throw away 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than at any other time of the year. Holiday lighting and home heating accounts for an increase in electricity use. Fireplaces produce air pollution and snow removal/icemelt practices pollute earth, air and water.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are some tips to reduce waste and pollution during the holidays and throughout the winter season:

Greetings

• Send e-cards instead of paper ones.

• Recycle or reuse all paper greeting cards you receive.

• Make greeting cards and gift tags out of old cards, calendars, magazines and wrapping paper.

Decorations

• Use LED lighting that uses less electricity than the old-style bulbs. Recycle your used holiday tree lights: Most ACE hardware stores accept and recycle old string lights.

• If you must buy new decorations, look in thrift stores or shop in stores that sell handmade crafts by local artisans. Don’t use glitter, tinsel or metallic paper, which can’t be recycled.

• Encourage children to make decorations with items you have on hand. Bring back the popcorn string! Use non-GMO corn of course.

• Dispose of unwanted decorations responsibly; donate to thrift stores or charities and recycle what you can.

• Instead of purchasing a fresh-cut tree each year, buy a live tree that can be planted in the ground after Christmas. If you don’t have room on your property, donate the live tree to a school or park. If you do buy a cut tree, purchase it from a local grower who matures and harvests trees responsibly, and dispose of it through local recycling/composting programs, instead of sending it to the landfill.

Gifts

• Buy gift certificates for services such as haircuts, massages, childcare, housecleaning, bike repair, art or music lessons etc. or outings such as dinner, movies, concerts and museums.

• Make a donation in support of a local or global organization on behalf of the person you’re gifting.

• Give an eco-friendly gift from an Internet source such as www.gaiam.com, www.uncommongoods.com, or search “eco gifts” for more sources.

• Limit the number of gifts you buy and receive with a gift exchange or a “white elephant” where something you already own is turned into a gift.

• Encourage children to make gifts for people or re-purpose their own toys into gifts for others. They can also make gift certificates for services they will provide such as backrubs, yard cleaning, household chores and such. Old and young alike appreciate gifts of time spent together cooking, gardening, doing

art projects, and visiting places.

• Support the local economy by shopping at nearby retail outlets, thrift stores or craft fairs instead of on the Internet or at the mall. Always bring your own reusable shopping bags.

• Re-purpose containers for gift giving instead of buying new boxes and wrap gifts in recycled paper, reusable gift bags or fabric. Better yet, use what you’ve got around the house like newspaper, maps or paper shopping bags. Use glue instead of tape. Don’t use ribbons and bows. Decorate packages with pictures cut out from magazines, calendars and holiday cards.

• Avoid shipping gifts whenever possible. Shipping increases packaging waste and carbon emissions from delivery vehicles.

Buy gift cards or make donations on behalf of far away friends and family, then notify them with an e-card.

Party time

• Don’t use disposable paper or plastic servingware at holiday parties. Have guests bring their own reusable dinnerware or if you simply can’t use real plates, forks, etc. then buy recyclable/compostable products and set up the corresponding bins for your guests to use.

• Bring potluck dishes to gatherings in your own bowls or use aluminum trays, which can be recycled.

• Buy food items from local and/or sustainable sources. Get a local farm-raised turkey, ham or beef roast.

• When your chestnuts are roasting on an open fire, make sure that fire is made with sustainably harvested and sufficiently seasoned wood. If your commercial firewood supplier doesn’t provide sustainably harvested wood, ask them to start carrying it.

• Replace old wood burning stoves with new EPA certified

Let it snow

• According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the typical two-cycle snow blower can expel nearly a pound of carbon monoxide for every hour it runs. Use a snow shovel instead. If you can’t shovel, hire a neighbor kid or service that will do it for you, which also serves to put money back into the local economy.

• The Environmental Literary Council cautions that deicing chemicals “can inhibit the ability of vegetation to absorb both water and nutrients, which can slow plant growth and affect animal habitats.” Use sand instead of chemicals or rock salt to melt ice or improve traction. If you must use deicer, apply it sparingly and try using calcium magnesium acetate (CMA), which has less potential to affect the environment and is not as corrosive as salt.

bottom line The bottom line is that the holiday season doesn’t need to be the most commercially exploitative and wasteful time of the year.

With a little thought and care, we can take sustainable practices right through winter and into a cleaner, healthier new year.

Folks filled the Carbondale Recreation Center for KDNK’s annual Labor of Love Auction and Community Mixer on Nov. 22. More than 100 businesses donated goods and services for the community access radio station’s silent auction, which grossed about $21,000 according to station manager Steve Skinner. “We sold more items than last year,” Skinner continued. The evening started early (at 4:30 p.m.) and by dinner time folks were diving into the Goat restaurant’s soups, stews and other offerings. “It (the Goat) was spectacular,” said one auction goer.

The band played at mid-court and kept folks entertained and dancing all night long.

The idea is to enrich the child from multiple angles and this also includes the environment in which the kids situate themselves while diving into the creative process. It is an art studio for kids 20 months to 10 years of age.

The environment is the brainchild of Sonya Taylor, an on-again-off-again local who, whether she’s residing here in the Roaring Fork Valley or spending time on the East Coast, is responsible for enriching the artistic imaginations of children in those areas.

Sonya has lived in and out of the valley but her time living in New York City went a long way in formulating the career she’s so passionate about today.

“I was in New York for three years trying to make my way as an actress,” says Sonya. “I also worked as a nanny and took care of a little girl. Together, we went to several kid’s classes, ballet, gymnastics, music and many art classes. When I realized acting wasn’t my thing I returned to the valley. I quickly realized there were those classes here, much like New York, but there was no real art outlet for small children.

I knew the type of art classes I would want to teach and what studio environment I wanted to create. So, I opened up in a little house behind what is now Heather’s restaurant on Midland Avenue in Basalt. I lived in the upstairs and made the tiny downstairs an art studio for kids. With my family’s help, we installed a yellow and white tiled floor, bought porcelain-top tables, vintage wooden kids chairs and made

up my dream kids art studio: warm, nostalgic and creative. Art studios can many times feel stark, modern and cold. I wanted people to come in and feel like they were in their grandma’s kitchen. I took the best traits from those studios I had frequented in New York and dreamed up The Yellow Canary.”

After moving the studio and even teaching art classes at Ross Montessori School in Carbondale, Sonya decided to head to Nantucket Island and the Massachusetts beach. There, she held classes on the Pavilion at Children’s Beach. The local families loved it, but the Roaring Fork Valley called back to her once again. After returning, Sonya took a job running the kid’s department at Anderson Ranch Arts Center.

“I learned a ton about the administrative side of a business while at the Ranch,” says Sonya, “and met amazing families and amazing kids. Then, after having my own little girl in 2012, I knew that if I wanted to spend any sort of quality time with her I had to leave the ranch and again open up The Yellow Canary. Plus I desperately missed doing my own thing. So now I juggle being a new mom and being a business owner. It’s crazy but I love it. I find I understand my clients, all moms, a ton more now that I am a mom too. Having a baby has just added a whole new dimension to my business.”
