redit-card giant American Express is apparently the big gun behind the Small Business Saturday promotion on Nov. 30 and several Carbondale businesses are right there in the mix. According to an American Express website, those businesses include: Main Street Gallery & the Framer, Miser’s Mercantile, Strange Imports, Crystal River Spas, Casual Culture, Ace Hardware, Aloha Mountain Cyclery, Independence Run & Hike, Main Street Spirits and the Roaring Fork Valley Co-op. The deal from the American Express end is a bit complicated so read closely. Register any eligible American Express card to get a one-time, $10 credit on your statement when you spend $10 or more on Nov. 30 in a single, in-store transaction at a qualiďŹ ed business on the Small Business Saturday on-line map. To register your card, call 866-515-4134. Or, just blow the whole thing off and whip out your trusty checkbook or throw down some cash on Nov. 30. The whole point, according to American Express and the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, is to support local businesses during the most important shopping time of the year. Aside from complicated credit card promotions, several Carbondale businesses and nonproďŹ ts are also gearing up for Nov. 30 and the holiday season. The Carbondale Business Park on Dolores Way (west of Highway 133) hosts an open house from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 30. The following businesses will be taking part: • Tylerware by Lea Tyler produces handpainted wooden salad bowls.  They are painted with water-based paint in vibrant colors and ďŹ nished with seven layers of a natural clear coat. All bowls will be on sale at 10 to 50 percent off. • Osmia Organics skin care products and natural perfumes are made by hand in small batches in Carbondale. • Board by Design produces modern furniture and accessories to solve today’s space and design problems. • Ann B. Design Jewelry offers colorful, sophisticated, laser-cut jewelry. • UpSki is a full service production sewing shop offering equipment for wind powered skiing and bike packing, plus Xtracycle™ bags, HOLIDAY SHOPPING page 17
