Counting our blessings Dear Editor: On this thanksgiving holiday I reflect back on my mother, Peggy Gilcrest’s, last 10 years of life here in Carbondale and realize how many blessings we have in this valley, especially for seniors.

I am thankful for the vast artistic opportunities: the enriching art classes she was able to participate in at CMC, CCAH and from various artists around town.

I am thankful for the welcoming and comfortable environment Crystal Meadows Senior Housing and Jerilyn Nieslanik provided: senior lunches, Crystal Belles singing club led and accompanied by Yvette MacEachen, and the annual Glenwood Vaudeville Review holiday outing. She made many wonderful friends.

I am thankful for the many non-profits that enriched her experience here: Senior Matters, Needle and I Quilter’s Guild, and especially Hospice of the Valley (Sean Jeung, Ann Stolley, Marti Barbour and Jennifer Bouchet) who took such great care of her in her last months.

I am thankful for the great restaurants she enjoyed: the Village Smithy, Mi Casita, Red Rock Diner, Beijing Tokyo, The Pour House, Peppino’s and Russets.

I am thankful for the various art, music and educational shows the local public schools provided where she enjoyed watching her grandchildren.

I am thankful for this being a place where not only can you find traditional medicine but also many alternative therapies such as chiropractic, acupuncture and massage.

I am thankful for the many spiritual and religious offerings through clubs and churches, meditative labyrinths, centering prayer and St. Benedict’s Monastery.

I am thankful for The Sopris Sun who not only filled a void for community news when the Valley Journal folded but also were supportive of my work schedule while I cared for my mother.

I am especially thankful for all of my friends and family that welcomed Peggy into their hearts and homes and who have provided such great support to my family and me. Happy Thanksgiving and thank you!

Thanks to the town Dear Editor: We would like to extend our thanks to the parks maintenance supervisor (Joshua W. Walberg), streets foreman (Martin “Smiley” Wise), and public works director (Larry Ballenger) for making one of our long time wishes come true. Our wish was answered with a swiftness that was unanticipated but much appreciated.

Parents and children are enjoying the new sidewalk that leads them down to the bike rack in front of the school. It has also created a wider turning area for the buses to make their right hand turn from Snowmass Drive. We wanted to let you all know that your hard work has not gone unnoticed and will be appreciated for years to come.

Dear Editor: For public enlightenment if there is a decision to fire Basalt Police Chief Roderick O’Connor, then there must be a Basalt Town Council hearing to decide it.

Such an employee hearing turns the Basalt Town Council into a judicial body — a court.

A government personnel/employee/civil service panel (board, commission) also adjudicates, so it has court rules and powers.

Its sessions and agenda items are open to public attendance and scrutiny, while there are matters that are not.

Basalt might want to establish a civil service commission to handle government workers problems and matters. The appointed board members would get judicial experience, too.

Often the public can exercise its "call to the people" to exercise its will to recall elected government officials. This lets Basalt citizens to adjudicate rogue thinking and conduct, wouldn’t it? Perhaps this may have a positive effect upon decision-making. However, in this paramount case about Basalt Police Chief Roderick O’Connor, decent civic-minded Basalt citizens must make certain that a possible Basalt Town Council hearing is not corrupted or tainted.

Ergo, some town council members may need to recuse themselves for various reasons that must be heard in public.

The second thing I’m grateful for is my horses. They are my refuge and my escape.

I’m thankful for …

I am thankful for my mother, the one who chose to put me on this world and the one who taught me how to dance.

I am thankful for my father, the one who worked every single day to make my dreams come true.

I am thankful for my sister, the one I got to for all the girly advice I need and all the tips and tricks on how to do my hair.

I am thankful for my brother, the one who taught me how to fight like a man and the one who brings the laughter to our family.

Thanks for the support I am most thankful for my family because they give me support in every thing I do and they provide the good food that they put on the table every night.

I am thankful for my house. It keeps me warm in the winter, helps keep me cool in the summer and keeps me dry when it rains.

Thirdly, I am thankful for my golf clubs because when I am frustrated, I can go and blow off steam on the course.

They keep me out of trouble and give me something to do in the summer.

Fourthly, I am thankful for all of the opportunities in life, like golf, the trips I get to take and how often I get to go and see my family.

Thanks for relatives

There are a lot of things in my life that I am grateful for but here are the primary things.

I am so thankful for my parents who work so hard at work to put food on the table, to go on trips and buy shoes, clothes, etc.

I am also satisfied with my brother keeping me entertained all the time and for living in America where I am free.

Another thing I’m pleased with is for the soldiers that protect America. They are risking their lives to keep us safe.

I am grateful for the house I live in, which provides shelter and a place to live.

Finally, I am thankful for James Naismith for inventing basketball. I love basketball and if he hadn’t invented it I probably would have been bored to death!

Clearly, these are only a couple of things in my life that I am thankful for and I couldn’t live without.

I look at the clock, 24 hours until the Thanksgiving feast. I was told to write what I am thankful for and read what I wrote at the table. I know how to write it but I don’t know what to write.

“Bella,”someone yells from down the hall. It is my Aunt Lexi. I run down the hall and jump into her arms. Her long red hair tickles my face. I let go of her and her blue eyes meet mine. Her rose red lips move from smile to a laugh.

“Have you finished your thankful paper yet?”

I look at my feet. I guess she saw me do it because she said “I will help you if you want.” I looked up, and those blue, blue eyes twinkled like stars.

“Come on we don’t have much time.”

We ran down the hall to my room.

“So what are you thankful for?”

“Ummmm,” I said. There was a long silence.

“I know,” I said, “I am thankful for my family, friends and the stars that point me in the right direction in life.”

On Thanksgiving night all of my favorite foods and family were there. They all had their own speeches. It was my turn. The clinking of the glass and spoon ring in my ears as I stand up.

“I am thankful for a lot, but I can only tell you three things. First, I am thankful for my family. My family is very sweet and caring. They feed me well and keep a roof above my head. Second, I am thankful for friends. My friends keep me looking forward and never down at my feet. Lastly, I am thankful for the environment. The environment has winding tunnels through my heart. I love the sun rays and wind blowing through my hair.

It is what I am thankful for.”

Every one stands and claps. Let the feast begin.

Sophia Jacober Grades 5-6

I am thankful for many things in my life. One specific thing is my family. They support me in whatever I choose to do.

They care for me and provide for me.

Another thing I’m thankful for is my friends. They are always there for me when I need a helping hand or whenever I want someone to hang out with. In addition, I am thankful for being able to golf, and for having the most amazing golf coach ever. I am also thankful for being able to go to golf tournaments, which I absolutely love to do.

I am very thankful to be able to go on vacations to all the amazing places around the world and country.

I am thankful for all my relatives, because they are all very affectionate, caring and enjoyable to be with.

It is always such a delight to wake up every morning to the things I love and cherish and being thankful for having everything I need.

Being thankful everyday I think we should be thankful everyday, not just on Thanksgiving. It took someone I know a while to learn that.

She started noticing this after her mom told her, “Honey, you need to be more thankful.” Then she said, “Mom, Thanksgiving is coming and I will be thankful then.”

On our way to school I told her that she was very smart and that she would do great on our math test. We did our math test and then went to the next class.

At the end of the day we got our tests back and we both did great.

On the bus she told me “I am thankful that I have a great friend to encourage me.” I went over to her house after dinner and her mom helped us with our homework because it was hard. When we were done she told me “I am thankful that I have a mom that is very smart.”

The next morning she asked me if I wanted to go over to her house again. I went to her house and we played with her dada all afternoon. Before I went back to my house she said “I am thankful that my dad plays with us.”At home I kept thinking about what her mom told her. Everyday she got something new to be thankful about. Now she is thankful everyday.

Number five is my cats, They get rid of all those rats.

Number six is my friends, They always have the time to spend.

Thankful for teachers There are lots of things I am thankful for. I am thankful for my family because I love them and they love me and we are a happy family. I am thankful for my house, food and water because when it rains or snows I have my house when I am want something to eat I have food and water. I am thankful for my doctor because he helps me when I am sick and hurt. I am thankful for my teachers because they are very, very nice and they help me learn and like me very much too.

There are a lot of things I am thankful for.

Twelve years Thankful for solar panels I have a lot of things in my life that I am grateful for. Some of these things are my family and friends, animals, houses, bikes and solar panels.

I am grateful for my family because they take care of me. I am grateful for my friends because they make me smile every day. Animals give me food, houses keep us warm and cozy, bikes let us go where other vehicles can’t, and solar panels save energy.

I am thankful for all these things.

Twelve years have gone by since I was born in the beautiful mountains of Colorado. In the 12 years that I have lived I have started to think about what I am thankful for.

I could not be more thankful than for my family. My dad goes to work every day and works hard to provide food, house, everything I need in my home, and activities for my brother and I. I am grateful for my mom because when my dad is at work, she works hard to take care of my brother and me.

I am thankful for my friends because they support me and like me.

Finally, I am grateful for my teachers who teach me new things every day.

My life is all about horses. I am thankful to have a horse for me to ride and how. I am thankful for many things but most of all the world.

P&Z continues comp plan public hearing The Carbondale Planning and Zoning Commission continued its public hearing on the draft comprehensive plan to Nov. 29 after it failed to attain a quorum on Nov. 15. The Nov. 29 meeting starts at 7 p.m.

The Carbondale Board of Trustees discussed speciďŹ cs in the draft plan for the ďŹ rst time on Nov. 13.

Carbondale’s current comprehensive plan was adopted in 2000. Trustees have said they plan to use the new comprehensive plan as foundation for a new zoning code, which they plan to address in 2013.

The P&Z can recommend approval or denial for the draft comprehensive plan but the trustees have the ďŹ nal vote.

Copies of the 140-page plan are available at town hall or on the town’s website at carbondalegov.org.

In 2011, the trustees hired the Durango-based RPI Consulting to help the town draft the plan.

Organic, on-line food market slated A Basalt-based on-line company that will sell natural, organic foods nationwide is looking for funding on indiegogo.com and hopes to start operations in late 2013 or 2014, according to a press release.

Aspen Valley Foods, founded by Alan Pilkington and Martha Silva of Redstone, will offer more than 400 food products in 16 categories from family owned ranches, farms, dairies, bakeries, vineyards and food artisans in North America. “Our emphasis will be to work with smaller, Colorado based producers,â€? said Pilkington. “All our food will be source veriďŹ ed and produced in harmony with rigorous natural, organic and sustainable standards and selected and tested under the direction of an executive chef to ensure superior taste and quality.â€?

GarCo continues waste transfer discussion At their meeting on Monday, the GarďŹ eld County commissioners continued discussion of MRI’s proposed solid waste transfer station on County Road 100 to Dec. 3.

More than 25 transfer station opponents attended Monday’s meeting. This time, several area home owners associations presented a report based on a 2007 study in Israel that claimed waster transfer stations lower property values for nearby homeowners.

The commissioners said they needed more time to read through information, including a state evaluation, that has been presented since the last public hearing on Sept. 17.

In deciding to continue discussion to Dec. 3 the commissioners left open the public hearing part of the proceedings.

The Silt-based Mountain Rolloff’s Inc., and IRMW II LLC, are applying for a land-use change permit to allow for a trash transfer and recycling facility at the former Mid-Continent load out site about one mile east of Carbondale on County Road 100.

The Sopris Sun is doing a new variation on our annual “Spruce Up the Sun� cover contest. Instead of a coloring contest we are opening up the competition to an original design.

The theme is “winter-holiday� and the contest is open to grades Pre-K through 12. We are adding a new category this year for ages 18 and up. Artwork must be 8 1/2 inches wide by 11 inches high. You may use a variety of media, such as watercolor, pen and ink, crayon, chalk, markers, etc. Brighter colors are encouraged. Please keep designs 2-dimensional in order for us to scan the artwork for publication.

This year’s winner is ‌

The Sopris Sun asked students from pre-school through fourth grade to Spruce Up The Sun for this week’s cover and spruce up they did. The more than 150 young artists who put colored pencil, crayon, watercolo rs and glitter to paper each had their own interpretation of how black and white outlines should morph into color.

One background had a Van Goghish quality to it, while another artist traveled beyond the sky and created a green and red backdrop like Christmas-present wrapping paper.

One contestant boldly divided the cover in half, with green dominating one side and red on the other.

Judging such a competiti ve contest would not have been possible without the help of discerning eyes at the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities.

This year’s Grand Prize winner is Sophia Ulrych, a fourth grader at Crystal River Elementa ry School (her work is shown here).

Top honors in the pre-schoo l/kindergarten division go to Emmet Garcelon (first) and Katie Huttenho wer (second).

First and second place in the first/second grade division are John Hamilton and Millie Simon respective ly. In the third grade division, Ana Rosa Vasquez placed first and Ayden Richmond was second. In fourth grade, Anna Cunningham was runner up to Sophia.

School board gives CCS siblings enrollment priority By debbie Bruell sopris sun Correspondent At its Nov. 14 meeting, the RE-1 school board voted 4-1 to change the enrollment policy at Carbondale Community School to give siblings of existing students priority for all available slots for new students. Previously, siblings of existing students had priority for only 50 percent of the 14 slots available for new kindergartners each year.

Several CCS parents, some in tears, and a few teachers supported the change at the meeting. Parents described the experience of one of their younger children not getting accepted into CCS, after their whole family already feels like part of the CCS community, as “devastating,” “heart wrenching” and “tearing families apart.” Parent Heather Wilson said,“If my son does not make it in next year, we’ll be in a crisis situation.”

Many parents said they contribute a great deal of volunteer hours and they do not want to have to divide their time between two different schools. Parent Stacey Simon noted, “We also give financially. It would be hard to divide that between two schools.”

After much discussion, school district superintendent Diana Sirko said the current policy of giving siblings priority for only 50 percent of existing slots existed because previous boards were “very cognizant” of wanting to make sure there was access for all.

However, she supported a policy change in order to help parents to play an active role in their children’s education.

“Logistically it’s hard to do that if you have kids in different schools,” Sirko said.

School board member Richard Stettner cast the dissenting vote. He pointed out that parents are well aware that siblings are not guaranteed a spot when they enroll their child in CCS.“What about all the other families that want to get into the school? It (the policy change) creates an extreme disadvantage to other families. … I’m having a hard time understanding how this is fair.”

The next discussion item on the school board agenda also related to the topic of school choice: the proposed Glenwood Springs charter school — Two Rivers Expeditionary School (TRES).

Sirko, Hamilton, Biggs and Stettner all raised serious concerns about approving the charter application, although the board will not make a formal decision about accepting the charter school into the district until the Nov. 28 board meeting.

Hamilton tied together the two conversations — CCS and TRES — arguing that the “huge waiting list” at CCS and the TRES parents’ urgent desire for a different educational experience for their children is an indication that the board is not being responsive to parents’ desires. Because so many parents are not satisfied with the nonchartered district schools, he stated that the board is “not delivering on our promise.”

After the meeting, Hamilton told The Sopris Sun he believes the district needs to put more focus on developing educational programs that “excite our students, parents and

staff and ignite their creativity.”

In addition to being more responsive to parents, Hamilton told The Sun “We (the board) also need to do a better job listening to teachers, asking them, ‘What kind of school would you want to teach in?’” He argued that a more exciting and engaging educational program would “capitalize on our greatest and most under-utilized asset — the teachers who make this district exceptional.”

Sirko noted,“An important message in all this is that there are different options that our community would like to see. … Is it smaller

size schools? Kindergarten through eighth grade schools? Expeditionary Learning?

What are the desires of our communities? If we’re going to be responsive … how do we engage in those community conversations?”

The school board plans to continue this discussion at its Nov. 28 meeting. Hamilton indicated he intends to make a motion at the meeting that the district commit to an exploratory process with the Expeditionary Learning Network to consider the possibility of converting an existing school to Expeditionary Learning.

Olympus likes the Lottimers The Olympus Corp. recently chose Austin Lottimer (26) and Maitland Lottimer (24) to join its Olympus Visionary program, where they’ll join a roster that includes Pulitzer Prize winning photographers Jay Dickman and Larry Price.

As part of Olympus’s Visionary program, the Lottimer brothers will shoot with the company’s cameras and post their images on Olympus-control websites, according to published reports.

The Lottimers were most recently in the news in 2011 when they won a VailFilm competition that called for contestants to produce a short film in less than 48 hours.

Sacca wins Lucy Schweers award Karol Sacca, the Garfield County Library District’s branch manager in Parachute, was recently awarded the 2012 Lucy Schweers award for excellence in public li-

brarianship. The award is given by the Colorado Association of Libraries to a librarian who displays outstanding leadership and service, as well as excellence in the library, information or media field within the state of Colorado, according to a press release. Nominees must directly or indirectly serve patrons and communities in a way that goes beyond basic requirements of his or her job. Last century, Sacca was librarian at Roaring Fork High School.

Dr. Doherty becomes a craniofacial pain fellow Dr. Michael Doherty, D.D.S. of Crystal Valley Dental Associates recently became a fellow of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain (AACP).

In a press release, Doherty said he takes a “conservative, non-surgical approach to treatment ensuring the holistic ‘head to toe’ overall health” of his dental patients.

The purpose of the AACP is to foster education among the medical and dental professions and to promote the understanding of the multi-disciplinary treatment of people suffering from craniofacial pain and TMJ disorders.

The Waldorf community came together to answer these questions: What most inspires you about Waldorf education and this school community; how do we create a Waldorf school where families who want this education will come regardless of ability to pay, and teachers and staff members are sufďŹ ciently supported?

The answers to the ďŹ rst question were necessary to help deďŹ ne strengths that then allowed the participants to draw on those strengths when brainstorming about ideas to increase enrollment, to participate in

more community outreach and events, to be ďŹ nancially sustainable, and to acknowledge the incredible work of the teachers and staff and offer ideas of support. These are questions every school, organization and business should be asking itself.

The Waldorf School on the Roaring Fork (WSRF) turned 21 this year, and with this milestone comes a time of transition and opportunity. Community Briefs Chamber announces Carbondale Card The Carbondale Chamber has introduced the Carbondale Card, a new program offering specials, discounts and coupons from participating chamber businesses to Carbondale cardholders. CCS thanks continued om page 3 It’s a great life I have a lot of things to be thankful.

The things I’m most thankful for are my family, my home and sports.

I am thankful for my family. My parents are awesome. They take good care of me and my brother and sisters.

I have an older brother, Cole, who is in ninth grade. My sister, Morgan, is in seventh grade. My younger sister, Molly, is four years old and will be in kindergarten next year. Having a big family is fun.

I am thankful for my home. Some people don’t have a home. We have a great house. It’s nice and big because there are six of us living there. I have lots of friends in the neighborhood to play with. I like where I live.

Sports are important to me. I play lacrosse, football, baseball, hockey and golf. My favorite sport is lacrosse. I’ve made lots of friends playing sports. I like them because they are active and I can get a lot of exercise. I’m also pretty good at most of the sports I play.

As you can see, I have a lot to be

thankful for. I have a great life!

Thanks for dad I’m thankful for a lot of things. I’m thankful for my dad, my friends and the sports I play.

I’m thankful for my dad. He used to be a professional soccer player. He knows the game and can teach me how to be a better player. Recently, he had an accident and now I have to take care of him because he’s in pain.

My dad is awesome. I really love him.

I’m thankful for my friends. I play with them at recess. We stand up for each other when there’s a problem because we care about one another. I have great friends.

I’m thankful for the sports I play. I work hard and I try my best. Every time I play a sport I have a smile on my face.

I’m thankful for all these things in my life.

See Thundercat at I’m lucky I have a lot to be thankful for. The things I am most thankful for are my family, my home, my cows, my school and my sports.

I love my family. I am thankful for my mom and dad because they keep me safe and pay for my sports. They make sure I have healthy food to eat.

That way I can stay healthy and do well in sports.

I am thankful for my home. I live in a great house and it keeps me safe from the wild winds and the blizzards.

I am grateful for my cows. My family raises grass fed cattle and this is how we make our money.

I am also grateful for my school. I have lots of friends there and two wonderful teachers that help me learn.

My sports are very important to me. Through sports, I have fun and make new friends. Playing sports always puts a smile on my face. I’m a lucky kid.
