Dear Editor: This is to respond to Amy Kimberly’s letter to the editor dating on Oct. 30, suggesting more affordable housing. Please stop and ask anyone in Carbondale why they live here in Carbondale and the answer would probably be affordable, more affordable than other communities in the Roaring Fork Valley and open space feelings. As a matter of fact, Carbondale has been providing affordable housing projects for over the last 20 years. The

school district has proven that with two new schools built right here in Carbondale alone in the last 15 years, CRES and RFHS. Yes, growth is good.

Carbondale is in the midst of moving, planning and accelerating into the future with changes that will affect us all. This process should not be taken lightly and decisions will be made, least remember that what exists now was already decided on previously. Apron skirts new roundabout Folks have been wondering about the dark-gray surface area between the center of the new roundabout at Highway 133 and Main Street and the single-lane roadway that circles it. According to CDOT, here’s the deal. The area between the traffic lane and center is the “apron,” whose purpose is to allow longer-wheel-based vehicles, such as trucks and buses, to negotiate the roundabout by rolling over the small curb that separates it from the driving lane. The apron is not intended for use by vehicles, pedestrians or bicycles.

In related news, the 20-foot-tall James Surls sculpture “Sewing the Future” will be installed in the center of the roundabout on Nov. 20, according to a press release.

“May the adornment of ‘Sewing the Future’ in the revitalized gateway to our downtown continue to provoke thought, inspire creativity and serve as a symbol of Carbondale’s unique qualities that make it a truly great place to be,” said Carbondale Mayor Stacey Bernot.

Local philanthropist Jim Calaway first proposed adding a Surls sculpture to the roundabout; Carbondale Public Arts Commission member Sue Edelstein presented the idea to the town trustees in 2013, which they unanimously approved.

The $200,000 bronze-and-steel sculpture was funded by a lead gift of $100,000 from Jim and Connie Calaway.

Other donors included Edlestein and Bill Spence, Sara Ransford, Timbers Resorts, Sue Anschutz Rogers, Alpine Bank, Susan and Larry Marx, Larry Cohen, First Bank and others. “To date, the funds have been fully raised from community members throughout the Roaring Fork Valley,” said the press release.

Surls is a Texas native and Missouri Heights resident whose work has been shown around the world. A public dedication is slated for June 5 with CPAC’s 2015 Art aRound Town unveiling. “This sculpture heralds the entrance to the Carbondale Creative District,” said CCAH Director Amy Kimberly.

Recreation Master Plan survey findings Cop Shop

To the 761 people who filled out our town of Carbondale Parks, Recreation and Trails Master Plan survey, and also to the more than 100 individuals who attended our public meetings and stakeholder focus group sessions, I want to say thank you. You took advantage of your opportunity to be heard and to help shape the direction that our future parks, recreation and trails will head in the next 10 years.

Do not fret if you were out of town during this process. The survey data showed that 49 percent of survey respondents get their exercise (and sanity) by utilizing the natural playground landscape that surrounds us. So if you were out biking, hiking, fishing, hunting, rafting, kayaking, climbing .. we get it, but your opinion is still important to us. You can still get involved.

Please visit either the town website at www.carbondalegov.org, or our recreation website, www.carbondalerec.com, where you can look over the survey and public meeting data collected. Or come in to the Carbondale Recreation & Community Center to see the Master Plan wall display.

You can also talk to staff about the findings from the survey and the visioning, prioritization, implementation and funding strategies of the highlighted opportunities that will make up our future.

On Dec. 10, the Parks and Recreation Commission will receive a presentation from Design Workshop updating their

work to date on the draft master plan.

There is also a joint meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission, and the Bike, Pedestrian and Trails Commission on Jan. 14.

These are public meetings and a portion of each meeting is allocated to citizens’ comments. Final adoption of the Master Plan is slated for Feb. 24, 2015 by the Board of Trustees.

The Carbondale Parks, Recreation and Trails survey findings, along with the focus group meetings, and with the sentiment of the community-at-large sessions, combined to provide data that evolved into many recurring themes. Here are a few non-prioritized highlights: 1. Focus on connectivity to public spaces, parks and trail networks by filling in the gaps in the bicycle and pedestrian network.

2. Highlight our rivers as community assets and recreation opportunities.

3. Our parks, trails and recreation programs are abundant for a community our size. We need to secure our fiscal health in order to maintain our existing parks, trails and recreational amenities.

4. Upon securing our fiscal health, create financial mechanisms to produce and maintain new projects that the public desires.

5. Our identity lies in our bikes, mountain adventure opportunities, arts, culture, community events, ranching heritage and as a gateway to the great outdoors. Promote and focus on becoming renowned for these assets.

6. Support, partner with, and develop strategic relationships with local and regional organizations. These partnerships enhance program and activity offerings, while using our public properties to their full potential for community recreation, special events and the arts.

7. Create community-based solutions to address our current challenges.

Personally, I get very excited when I look at the present Master Plan findings for the future of Carbondale’s parks, recreation and trails. The statistically valid data proves that we have so much already, that we are enjoying our existing amenities and that we have good intentions for the future. We dream big, which is always a fun and informative part of a 10-year visioning process. We also are realistic, and realize that the maintenance and sustainability of what we have is of utmost importance. We also realize that the larger goals will only be accomplished through a collective process, and will require the utilization of new creative funding opportunities, institutional patience and indepth community involvement.

After all, nothing that you desire has ever come to fruition without you personally being involved.

Thanks for being involved in the Carbondale Parks, Recreation and Trails Master Plan process.

FRIDAY Oct. 31 At 9:09 p.m. police report a house on North Bridge Drive was egged. There was no apparent damage.

SATURDAY Nov. 1 At 1:07 a.m. a man reported he was assaulted in a restaurant.

SATURDAY Nov. 1 At 9:56 p.m. police responded to a reported burglary at a restaurant on Highway 133.

SUNDAY Nov. 2 At 9:38 p.m. police responded to a report of domestic violence. When the suspect refused to talk to police on the phone or come in for an in interview, police issued an arrest warrant.

THURSDAY Nov. 6 At 11:30 a.m. police received a report that handicapped placards were stolen from a vehicle on Second Street.

THURSDAY Nov. 6 at 5:12 p.m. police were dispatched to a two-car accident in the 200 block of Highway 133. There were no injuries.

Youth is heard, and served, in Zanca program Broadcasting on KDNK

By Adele Craft Sopris Sun Intern The Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program (AZYEP) is an organization based in Carbondale that is run through KDNK Community Radio. The program teaches radio broadcasting to youth in the Roaring Fork Valley.

There are about 30 kids in the program, ages eight to 18, who rotate to do weekly radio shows. The AZYPEP staffers — Stacy Stein and Beth Wysong — partner with local teachers to record student projects and provide opportunities for classes to learn about being on the radio. During the past school year, they have worked with more than 360 different students from various schools.

Stein told The Sopris Sun, “It’s cool that we can work with large groups of students and give them that sense of being famous by being on the radio. Even if they don’t come back week after week, it’s still a really empowering experience.”

Through these partnerships, the program can reach many kids in a short amount of time. In addition to the weekly shows, AZYEP students put on a public affairs show once a month, featuring various topics that are prevalent in the valley. Stein said she believes that, “Youth have an important voice and the community needs opportunities to listen in.”

Stein has been the executive director for seven and a half years. Fund-raising, marketing and outreach are her main focuses. She also works with local high schools to do classroom partnerships. Wysong joined the AZYEP team last March as the program director. She trains, schedules and works with the youth DJs to do their shows.

History The program was started in 2000 by Annemarie Zanca, the sister of the late Andy Zanca. Andy was a DJ on KDNK. He started his show when he was around 9 or 10 years old.

Andy had a tough home situation and did not quite fit in.

It became a very comfortable place for him to be … So when Andy had this skill that not too many kids his age had, it did help his self-esteem. It gave him a place where he could be successful that helped to make him feel better about himself.” He was a DJ at KDNK until he was 21, when he took his own life. Annemarie started the program using Andy as an inspiration. “Youth radio gives youth a voice, gives them a place to express their thoughts and ideas and even express themselves through their choice of music,” she said. “That is what is empowering about it.”

Being a part of AZYEP has influenced the lives of many young people in the Roaring Fork Valley. Shannon Moran, a freshman at Bridges High School, has been a part of the program for more than three years. She told The Sopris Sun, “The biggest impact KDNK has had on my life would be just the sheer amount of wonderful, talented people I have come to know, especially the other youth DJ’s like myself.

They have introduced me to a different aspect of community, and I couldn’t be more grateful.”

Wysong agreed, “AZYEP allows students to see that they are a vital role in our community, and with the help of KDNK it gives young people a sense of place.”

Being on the radio introduces young people to new aspects of their community and gives them a place where they feel like they belong. On her shows, Moran plays as much music as possible, with limited breaks. She plays a wide variety of musical genres, but lately has been focusing on classic rock and jazz.

Miles Craft, a home-schooled seventh grader, has also being doing his show for a little over three years. He said, “KDNK has impacted my life by allowing me to be on the air. It helped me be a good speaker while on radio breaks and it has made me be a good writer because I have to write a script that I use on each show.” Being a part of AZYEP has given him skills that he would otherwise not have access to.

This phenomenon is not only unique to Craft. “I love seeing students come out of their shell through the radio,” said Wysong. “I have worked with teenagers for many years, and I have witnessed students who are fearful of the judgment and negative feedback they receive when speak-

ing in front of others, adults and peers alike. Radio seems to enable those timid students to speak without the pressure of this judgment. It’s almost like the airwaves provide protection to young people who often shut down in front of others. These students thrive on the radio, and it is amazing to watch them feel empowered over the airwaves.”

On Nov. 19 from 4:30 to 5 p.m., youth DJs will host a public affairs show featuring conversations with teachers and graduates of a life- skills class that is taught at Bridges, Basalt, Roaring Fork, Glenwood Springs and Yampah high schools. In January, third graders from Crystal River Elementary School will present personal narratives they wrote.

You can hear youth radio shows every Monday afternoon from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., Thursday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday afternoons from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The public affairs shows take place on the third Wednesday of every month from 4:30 to 5 p.m. To hear these shows, go to kdnk.org and click on “live stream” on the left side of the page or tune into 88.1 FM in Carbondale, 88.3 in Aspen, 88.5 in Basalt and Redstone, 93.5 in Leadville and 94.9 in Thomasville.

If you’re wondering The Rio Grande Trail between Rock Bottom Ranch and Catherine Bridge closes for the season to protect wildlife on Nov. 30 and reopens on April 30, 2015, according to the RFTA website. The closure applies to all trail users, including anglers, hikers and hunters.

Run for Her a success Almost 70 people turned out at River Valley Ranch for last Sunday’s Run for Her walk for ovarian cancer awareness. “I was deeply touched to meet these people who have fought the battle and come out the other side. I congratulate them and admire

them for participating in events like these,” said local organizer Diane Darling. Other participants included friends of ovarian cancer victims and local residents. The 3.7 mile walk around the River Valley Ranch Loop was held in conjunction with other Run for Her events around the U.S., and raised $1,400. For more information, go to bit.do/runforherRVR.

making all-league The Roaring Fork High School football squad landed a total of eight players on the Class 2A Western Slope North all-league team. First team honors go to senior wide receiever/kick returner Roy Benge, junior running back/linebacker Sergio Vega, and junior wide receiver/defensive end Conrado Delores. Named to the second team were Tanner Spence, Jake Rusby, Max Slack, Aldo Pinela and Eduardo Martinez. The Rams finished the season with a 2-7 record.

Students honor veterans Crystal River Elementary School and Carbondale Middle School students honored military veterans in their own way during Tuesday’s Veteran’s Day. Although the two programs were somewhat different, they both shared the same spirit and pride. At Crystal River Elementary School, the students chose to entertain and honor the veterans by singing songs for them and then coming up on stage. At Carbondale Middle School the school band performed military and patriotic songs, and several students gave speeches.

“Into the Deep” brings rare images to surface

By Jane Bachrach Sopris Sun Staff Writer Local commercial photographer Tyler Stableford has had a dream project in mind for quite awhile. The fine-art project that has teased his imagination and surfaced frequently was really, really LARGE and challenging.

Then in late August after mentally testing the waters for a few years, he finally put together his dream team and plunged in.

Fortunately for us here in Carbondale and the Roaring Fork Valley, the public will have the opportunity to check out the images that were created out of his labor of love at a reception from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 at Phat Thai in downtown Carbondale. The reception will feature seven large, fine-art prints that Stableford and his Co-Director Kate Rolston photographed during their journey “Into the Deep.”

The dream project “I’m captivated by whale sharks and I’ve wanted to photograph a beautiful swimmer interacting gracefully with them,” Stableford told The Sopris Sun. “Although the whale shark is the largest shark in the world they’re completely docile,” he said.

Once a year in the late summer, whale sharks gather in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Cancun, to feed on the plankton. They remain there for about one or two months and can eventually grow to be 45–feet in length. There were about 40 of the whale sharks around when Stableford and his team were present.

The dream team When Canon (cameras) learned about the project, the company commissioned it.

With their support and the creative contributions, dedication and collaboration of Rolston and a family friend, Stableford was finally ready to dive in.

Photographer Kate Rolston lives in Carbondale and is co-director of Stableford Studios. “Kate’s role in this project was to shoot behind-the-scenes photos and videos for Canon, as well as to shoot the fine art images whenever possible,” Stableford said.

Rolston was quite involved with the project and research, and said that Stableford’s excitement and inspiration was contagious and rubbed off on her.

“This is a project Tyler had talked about for two summers and seeing his drive and his ability to carry it through made it a special experience for me,” Rolston said.

The other key team member is Ashley Moser. She used to live in Carbondale but moved to Los Angeles a year ago to pursue a career in cinematography. “I needed a beautiful model with strong lung capacity who could hold her breath for long periods of time; someone who was a good swimmer that could swim gracefully and give us graceful poses,” Stableford said. Although Stableford originally thought about using a professional model, in the end he realized that Moser fit the bill. “She was a willing subject and close friend of the family. She used to be a professional swimmer and competed in the Olympic Trials at one point. And … she’s beautiful.”

The challenges Last August, with the team in place, off they went.

“This is the most challenging photography I’ve almost ever done,” Stableford said, adding that the shoot was challenging for everyone.

“The area is protected and restricted and you must go with a certified guide, and wear only snorkel gear,” he said. This was the main reason that he needed a model that had a lot of strength as a swimmer.

During the shoot, Stableford and Rolston both had snorkels and wore masks and fins.

Moser didn’t. They shot with standard Canon cameras put in underwater housing.

“We shot both on the surface snorkeling and also diving deep down underneath the sharks, holding our breath.

We had only seconds to capture a moment, to capture Ashley in graceful poses next to or underneath a whale shark.

We were in the water for five hours shooting among the whale sharks with dozens of failed attempts. The sharks are always moving. Ashley had no flippers, snorkel or mask and the challenge was to position ourselves in such a way to get the most artful, graceful shots,” Stableford said.

According to Moser, “it was really hard physical work. I had to swim down 20 to 30 feet and we did it over and over for hours.”

Whereas Stableford had specific shots he was going for, Rolston wasn’t as restricted because she didn’t have a particular image or images in mind in addition to her role of shooting behind-the-scenes photos and videos for Canon. She was basically free to spontaneously create her own fine-art images.

The experience The experience of swimming among whale sharks underneath the ocean’s surface was different for each team member, yet a lot of the feelings were similar.

Rolston said she was a bit nervous, although her anxiety wasn’t so much about the whale sharks — it was about wanting the day to go smoothly. It was about being able to get some good photographs and the physical challenge of having to continually go under the water to get the shots.

“Once I was under the water with the sharks it was peaceful being with them; watching their undulating tails as I fell in line and followed them. It was an amazing and special opportunity,” she said. “The animals were so much bigger than I expected and there’s this moment of ‘oh my gosh’!”, but rather than being afraid it was exhilarating.

“I was a little bit frightened,” Ashley said, “but I’m so comfortable in the water that it was more of a beautiful opportunity to connect with another soul in the water. It was dreamy and surreal. Despite the really hard physical work, it was awe-inspiring.

When I was under the belly of the whale shark there was a moment when I was so present. They’re humongous! It was beautiful and exhausting.”

In addition to the challenge, Stableford said that for him, “It was a really powerful experience to swim with such enormous creatures. It was both thrilling and peaceful to be alongside the sharks; they are quite docile.”

Phat Thai What you will see at Phat Thai are uncomposited single frame images, meaning they weren’t altered in Photoshop nor were there a series of images put together to make one photo. Letters continued from page 2 cause it exists. Carbondale has been meeting that need for over 20 and hopefully will continue to do so. The real question is where does Carbondale have the opportunity to grow?

The town borders to the east on Snowmass Drive, west to the Crystal River, south to the fire station and north to the Roaring Fork River and as you can see there is not much more acreage, yardage, feet or whatever to build in a horizontal space level. To meet the demands of an ever-growing population the next step would be to grow vertically. Take a look around. Carbondale is slowly moving in that direction.

When Amy Kimberly speaks (writes) of alternative living spaces in “tiny houses” (like shipping containers and yurts?) The question we need to ask is where do these fit into this community when Carbondale borders are already filled? Maybe this community could concentrate on innovative ways to purchase more land in order to create and support the multitudes of housing needs for this community. Shall we fill the last two open spaces within the town limits: Delaney property (aka the doggy park), and now the space around the Third Street Center with more housing, commercial or what the greater needs of the general public at the current time because once it is filled it will take a life time to reverse back?

Any other open spaces you see are privately owned such as the space across from Roaring Fork CO-OP. Yes we all can get into our cars, ride our bikes, or walk just a few blocks and step

out into the open spaces that surround this town but the downside of that is the open spaces are privately owned by ranchers that have made their investment when land was plentiful. And if the ranchers decide to change the concept of their fields (RVR and Aspen Glen) that surrounds Carbondale that open feeling concept could be lost forever. And does Carbondale really want to build buildings taller than the trees that grow here.

So yes, attend the uniform code meetings allow for you input via mail, e-mails and texts but remember this is for tomorrow not today.

After the vote: stay engaged Dear Editor: For those of us climate voters, the election news in Colorado hit hard. However, there is still much good work to be done and I encourage anyone who is concerned about the ecological vitality of our planet — whether you express that in terms of wilderness, clean water and air, or climate stability — to stay engaged.

We are called to be evolutionary activists, warriors of light, in service to the visions that so many of us hold of local, sustainable food systems; peaceful and just social structures; colorful communities where humans and nature live in harmony.

Keep telling those stories. Tell them most of all to our new senator, Cory Gardner, and to our U.S. Representative Scott Tipton.

Remember that humans are part of a four-billion-year long (so far) story of evolution that will continue long after we and our children are gone. In the short 100plus year story of industrialization, we have seen the rise of fossil fuels and world wars, along with women’s suffrage, the civil rights movement, the end of Apartheid, tolerance for sexual diversity, permaculture, renewable energy technology, and a globally connected human presence. As Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. said it, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

Our local chapter of Citizens Climate Lobby will continue our work of building relationships with our elected officials. A livable world isn’t a partisan issue, so we ask leaders on both sides of the aisle to be part of the solution. We believe that human beings innately want peace, prosperity and a connection with the living world that sustains us all. For the past two years, we were so happy how all your beautiful creations stood up so well past Potato Days. However, that was not the case this year as we really got zapped by an early front.

Many of the plantings were compromised from the frost, therefore, we weren’t able to have a quality judging as we have done in the past.
