Lost, but now found By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer

A

chunk of Carbondale history landed, unexpectedly, on the Launchpad doorstep last week. The chunk of history was packed into a cardboard box mailed to Carbondale Arts from New Mexico. The box contained four trays of Mountain Fair slides dating from the 1970s through late 1980s — a total of 560 photo slides documenting the fair, from events such as the limbo contest that continues today, to the days when the Carbondale Fire District used to hose down the crowd with an actual fire house (blasted from a 45 degree angle). This reporter and a photographer named Dyke Peterson, photographed the Mountain Fair slide show in 1985. Like other photographers before and after us, we shot dozens of rolls of Kodak Ektachrome film during most of the fair, rushed them to Slide Master at the Aspen Airport Business Center for processing, sped back to Carbondale to load the slides into carousels, then splashed them up on a screen at the gazebo for a wildly enthusiastic audience. Flash forward to the early 1990s, and the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities gave the slides to a local photographer, to compile a Mountain Fair slide show retrospective. The photographer combed through hundreds of slides — from photographers that included Jim Ryan, Becky Young, Patty Barry Levy, Rich Clarkson, Mark Gamba and others — and picked out 560 slides for the show, which was presented at the fair that year. After the fair, the slides went missing. This reporter tracked down the photographer a year or two later, who had moved to Fort Collins. His wife said they had the slides but he denied it. Long story short, someone mailed the slides to Carbondale Arts last week. For a sampling of the slides, please turn to page 8. Camp Bonedale 1985. Before folks started planting open-sided tents in Sopris Park during Mountain Fair, Camp Bonedale staked out turf for anyone who felt like sitting in the blazing sun for several hours. Of course, this was before the Carbondale trustees passed an open container ordinance, so massive quantities of beer helped cool down Camp Bonedale residents. Photo by Lynn Burton
