Community comes together on safety, self-protection

By Evan Zislis According to the World Health Organization, one in three women will be the victim of physical and/or sexual violence in her lifetime.

One in three.

While many think of this issue as one of “predators lurking in the shadows,” the issue is actually much broader than that, according to Robyn Hubbard, a grief counselor with Pathfinders and founder of Core Healing Arts. As Hubbard explains, “Much of the violence and oppression toward women happens among our own friends and families ... it’s part of the shadow of our culture.”

In the wake of recent incidences of violence against women in the Roaring Fork Valley, a coalition of local agencies and community leaders are coming together to offer a free workshop on community safety and self-protection. The event is for both women and men, Hubbard explained, because it's an issue for everyone. “There is shame that men feel for being blamed for this situation,” Hubbard said, “even though not all men are acting this way.”

Organized by Hubbard, Karen Bradshaw,

Deborah Colley, Nannette Weinhold, Felicia Trevor and Sheri Gaynor, the workshop is being offered at the Launchpad in Carbondale from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 5.

Hubbard will facilitate the first half of the program, addressing the social-emotional impacts of violence against women and how to create safety in communities. With onsite support from Advocate Safehouse and other local counselors, Hubbard intends to start a conversation designed to empower everyone to create a more safe and supportive community.

In the second half of the program, 5th degree black belt and founder of Rising Crane martial arts Karen Bradshaw will lead a hands-on self-defense and self-awareness training. One of the highest ranking women of the Cuong Nhu martial arts, Bradshaw intends to focus her instruction on the five core principles of self-defense: awareness, alertness, avoidance, anticipation and action.

For many, there is a disconnect that inadvertently isolates the social, emotional, spiritual, and physical. Body image, self-esteem, self-worth, self-confidence and social status often contribute to how girls and

women both experience the world and are perceived by those around them. Through this training, Hubbard and Bradshaw hope to empower community members with an integrated approach to building self-awareness and personal safety. With a little coaching, Hubbard and Bradshaw seek to train participants to answer, “How am I going to put my body into action with what I’m feeling? Where am I in this moment and how do I want to respond?”

In addition, Advocate Safehouse will present local statistics about violence in our community and Sheri Gaynor of Creative Awakenings will coordinate a prayer flag art project for interested participants.

Pathfinders will also be available to share resources about their services.

The training is free and open to men and women, 15 years and older. Eighth graders may attend with parental supervision. Bilingual translation and support will be available.

Learning with Love sets Latino toddlers on path to learning Sopris Sun Staff Report Asked for an accomplishment from the Learning with Love program, Katie Langenhuizen pauses. “We have had a class in Glenwood that had been together most of last year. At the end of the year, they decided they wanted to see each other more socially. They started hosting gatherings at their houses and in parks, outside the class.”

Continuing, Langenhuizen says, “This isn’t something small for these families. It took them a whole year to trust one another enough to risk making those invitations.”

Many English-speaking, U.S-born locals will be left scratching their head as to why a potluck in the park could be so frightening. But those who have worked with local Latin-American immigrants can tell tales of Spanish-speaking women who feel so isolated by language that they seldom go out in public. Laid on top of that are fears about discrimination, immigration status and social rejection.

Langenhuizen, who worked as an English as a second language (ESL) teacher before coming to Learning with Love and the Valley Settlement Project says, “There are lots of fears, even in this small community. Our focus is helping immigrant families to connect to the community.” Langenhuizen notes that while the families in the program come from many different backgrounds – hailing not just from Mexico, but all across Latin America — they are united in having strong hopes for their children. “These parents have a strong, strong desire to do well by their families and to give their kids every opportunity.”

Learning with Love, a project started by the Valley Settlement Project, brings kids and their parents together with a leader twice a week to learn how promote healthy child development. The project empowers parents to become their child’s first and most important teacher.

Fast learning As researchers have detailed, a child’s brain produces 700 new neural connections every second and learns at an astonishing rate between birth and age three. Because of

that, the National Academy of Sciences has issued guides (in English) that tell parents how to stimulate the growth of a child’s intertwined social, emotional, intellectual, language and motor skills. The Learning with Love project puts that same information into a form that Latino parents can use to help their kids.

Language and income barriers keep children like these out of day care, and that, in turn, deprives them of an opportunity to learn key social skills. So, currently, six Learning with Love parents’ groups, made up of eight families each, meet with a teacher twice a week. Throughout the school year, they learn about early childhood brain development, read picture books aloud, sing songs and play games that help their kids build physical, social and language skills.

Langenhuizen, who is expecting her own child in three months, recalls, “One of the new moms told the teacher that she never knew how important it is to get down on the floor and play with her son.”

Some new mothers will keep a child in a crib to keep him safe and clean, inadvertently slowing the process of learning to walk and gaining other motor skills. The teacher showed this new mom how to set up safe floor play. Then, within a single school year, the little boy’s coordination caught up with that of his peers.

“We serve a hard-to-reach population,” Langenhuizen notes, adding that the program originally found participants via door-to-door canvassing. “At this point, though, parents come mostly through word-of-mouth. We have earned a reputation.”

While the program is headquartered at the Third Street Center, the family groups are scattered from El Jebel to West Glenwood Springs. Staffed by six teachers, the program shares additional support staff — an early childhood specialist and a “community navigator” — with the Valley Settlement Project. Learning with Love is free to participating families and is supported by foundations, grants and individual donors.

VSP: Four programs Initiated with a $1.2 million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Valley Settlement Project (VSP) is a dual generation program focused on school readiness, elementary school achievement, economic stability and community engagement for local families, according to the VSP website. The project’s focus is on low-income families who are not successfully settled or attached to the community in which they live. Through community organizing and partnerships with local nonprofits, schools and government agencies, Valley Settlement Project works to support and empower these families. “We believe that we can reduce school achievement gaps through this dual generation approach,” said a VSP spokesman.

Valley Settlement Project’s programs were developed after a nine-month planning period, during which community organizers visited 300 households in 25 neighborhoods; gave presentations to 14,400 people; and met with leaders from dozens of organizations across the region including school officials, churches, health and human services agencies, policy-makers, and leaders of our local community college.

The Valley Settlement Project’s four programs are: Learning with Love; El Busesito (the Little Bus); Family, Friends and Neighbors; and FocusedKids™.

El Busesito (The Little Bus) is VSP’s mobile earlychildhood education program for three to five yearolds, featuring a fully-equipped classroom in each of the two cherished buses. El Busesito addresses the need to improve school readiness by providing high quality pre-school experiences for low-income children that otherwise lack access to any early childhood education before entering kindergarten.

Cops collect 26 pounds of drugs Sopris Sun Staff Report The Carbondale Police Department collected 26 pounds worth of prescription drugs at a recent Drug Take Back Day event, helping to keep the substances from being ushed down the toilet and causing problems with operations of the town’s water system, according to Town Manager Jay Harrington’s weekly report to trustees, staffers and others.

In other news from Harrington’s report: The town’s streets crew continues to perform preparatory work on a sidewalk next to Miners Park, in the Crystal Village subdivision, as well as doing pothole maintenance and cleaning leaves from gutters and catch basins.

Meanwhile, the parks crew has been kept busy with leaf maintenance around town, removing low hanging limbs from pedestrian and bike trails, and hauling loads of leaves to the permaculture garden site at Thompson Park.

The parks crew also removed submersible irrigation pumps from several locations along the Carbondale ditch system, in preparation for winter.

David Coon, the town arborist, has draped lights on the trees around the downtown area. Among his other duties, Harrington wrote in his memo, have been meetings with a tree contractor to tag hazardous trees at the Nature Park (editor’s note: AKA the Delaney dog park), and staking out the northern property line of the Nature Park. Coon also removed limbs from an elm tree along Main Street, between Snowmass Drive and 2nd Street, to give sufďŹ cient clearance for the town’s sweeper truck.

Town staff last week submitted a ďŹ nal grant “closeout reportâ€? to the GarďŹ eld County Federal Mineral Lease District, seeking reimbursement of $25,000 the town spent to erect the Bonnie Fischer Park bread-oven shelter behind the

Third Street Center.

Staff also met with the organizers and plot owners of the Hendrick Community Garden, to discuss issues related to garden operations, approval of rules and regulations, and appointing ofďŹ cers and volunteers to take care of garden business.

Various town department employees, including the planning staff, police and public works, took part in a “safe routes homeâ€? work session. Among the discussion topics was planning for a Nov. 7 public meeting about the underlying issues, including the locations that might need increased lighting, which routes see the most foot and bicycle trafďŹ c at night, and other matters.

Water customers from Cooper Place and GarďŹ eld Avenue over to Main Street, and from the west end of Main Court to Cooper Place, were informed they would experience two water outages in the middle of this week, as the town works with the developers of a Cooper Place housing project to iron out conicts involving water lines in the area.

The outages, according to Harrington, were deemed necessary to abandon one pipe in that part of the system and install a new, larger section of pipe.

The Nettle Creek water treatment plant was adjusted recently to accommodate winter water demands, and the Roaring Fork treatment plan will be “in standby mode with routine maintenance runs to keep it operational� until the plant is called into service again, Harrington reported.

Over at the recreation department, registration got underway for the 2016-17 Base Camp Cycling class, which is scheduled to run from now through March. These are indoor cycling classes with a monthly fee of $60, Harrington wrote, and classes take place on Tuesday and Thursday, in two sessions each day.

FRIDAY, Oct. 14: At 9:29 a.m. police received a report that a horse bridle had been stolen from the Roaring Fork Co-op store on Highway 133. The case is under investigation.

FRIDAY, Oct. 14: At 2:05 p.m. police took a report of an alleged case of fraud involving a resident living on Vito’s Way. The reporting party indicated she discovered the fraud “before any attempt to remove any money.�

SATURDAY, Oct. 15: At 10:45 a.m. police were alerted to a trafďŹ c complaint that started at the New Castle exit on I-70, when a 27-year-old male was stopped for weaving on the roadway. He was later taken to the GarďŹ eld County Jail on charges of drunk driving and other violations.

SUNDAY, Oct. 16: At 4:29 p.m. ofďŹ cers were informed of a burglary at a home on North 8th Street. The case is under investigation.

SUNDAY, Oct. 16: At 4:41 p.m. police were dispatched to a home on GarďŹ eld Avenue over a report of criminal mischief.

After investigating, the ofďŹ cers determined that an additional charge of criminal trespassing was warranted.

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 19: At 10:15 p.m. police were informed of a hit-and-run accident in front of the Third Street Center.

No injuries were reported, and police are investigating.

THURSDAY, Oct. 20: At 3:43 p.m. police stopped a vehicle for driving on the wrong side of the road on Redstone Avenue. After investigating, they arrested the 27-year-old male driver on charges of failing to drive on the right side of the road, and drunk driving.

SATURDAY, Oct. 29: At 8:47 p.m. GarďŹ eld County deputies stopped a car for speeding on County Road 100 east of Carbondale and, after investigating, arrested the driver on suspicion of driving while under the inuence of alcohol or drugs.

The driver was taken to the GarďŹ eld County Jail.

Eric Johnson postscript The Sopris Sun received sad news this week that former Redstone Gallery co-owner Eric Johnson died in Oregon at the age of 86 (see the obituary on page 14). Here is a note that his wife, Sherry, sent to the Sun. “Eric asked that his ashes be distributed across North America!!! He wants some here in Port Orford in the Pacific Ocean, some in the Crystal River in Redstone and some where he was born, in Nova Scotia in the Atlantic Ocean!!

He had been laughing about his request for 20 some years, saying, ‘I know how much you love to travel.’ That was just typical of Eric’s humor. We should be having another Redstone Reunion in the spring of 2018, perhaps that would be an appropriate time.”

Fire district revenues up; budget hearing Nov. 9

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The total annual revenues of the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District have risen from just shy of $2 million in 2015 to a projected figure of just over $3 million for 2017, according to budget documents available online at www.carbondalefire.org (click on Menu, then About Us, then Board of Directors to get to the budget).

The 2017 projection, according to the budget documents, comprises $2.7 million in taxes (compared to about $1.7 million in 2015).

This surge in income is due largely to a voter-approved, two-year property tax increase in 2015 that raised the district’s property-tax income from $1.56 million in 2015 to a projected level of nearly $2.6 million in 2017.

Taxes make up the bulk of the district’s annual income.

The rest of the district’s anticipated revenues for next year, according to the proposed budget, are from a number of sources. The largest item comes in the form of payments to the district’s ambulance service, which in 2017 are expected to reach $285,000.

Over the last couple of years, the elected members of the fire board have begun rebuilding the annual reserves of the district, which had been drawn down over the course of several years to make up for lost revenues due to the recent Great Recession.

At the start of 2017, according to the proposed budget, the district’s cash reserves — the amount on hand to deal with unexpected expenses or losses of revenue — are expected to stand at more than $1.2 million, compared to a reserves balance of slightly more than $1 million at the start of 2016.

Offsetting the revenues, the district plans to spend a little more than $2.3 million on personnel (compared to about $2.2 million in 2016 and $1.9 million in 2015), followed by roughly $235,000 on administrative costs, and much lower amounts on fire-fighting equipment and support, ambulance

supplies and communications.

One significant increase for 2017, according to the budget, is in training, which had been cut fairly drastically during the lean years.

According to the budget, the department hopes to spend nearly $74,000 on training in 2017, compared to $68,000 in 2016 and $12,200 in 2015.

In the district’s capital fund, another area that took significant hits over the previous years, the district expects total revenue of only $95,000.

But expenditures, according to the proposed budget, are expected to be roughly $232,000, including $102,000 in pay-

ments on loans for purchasing new trucks, $50,000 for fire fighting equipment, and $40,000 for station equipment.

The expenditures are being paid for by a transfer of $100,000 from the district’s general fund, and a reduction of the capital projects fund balance to $615,000 by the end of the year.

The district will hold a public hearing about the proposed budget starting at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 at district headquarters, 300 Meadowood Drive on the south end of town.

The budget is expected to be adopted in December, probably at the regularly scheduled meeting on Dec. 14, according to district officials.

Questions go “unadjudicated” in GarCo investigation

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer What we have here, it seems, is a failure to adjudicate (paraphrasing, without apology, a line from the classic film, “Cool Hand Luke”).

Local observers recently have been treated to a kind of legalistic circus involving five-term incumbent Republican Garfield County Commissioner John Martin fighting to hold onto his job in the Nov. 8 election; Democratic challenger John Acha trying to unseat Martin by, in part, accusing him of mishandling county funds; and Ninth Judicial District Attorney Sherry Caloia caught in the middle when Acha approached her office to investigate embezzlement allegations against Martin.

The Democrats — specifically Acha and attorneys on his campaign team — believe Martin is guilty of what is known as “double dipping” into his expense accounts for trips around the U.S. while on the taxpayers’ dime.

And they have documentation to back up their beliefs, after deluging the county government with Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) requests for various kinds of records and data.

over her annual budget for the judicial district (Garfield County is one of three counties that make up the Ninth District), declared that she has an inherent conflict of interest. So she filed a request with Chief Judge James Boyd, also of the Ninth District, asking that Boyd appoint Fifth Judicial District Attorney Bruce Brown as a special prosecutor to handle the probe into Martin’s expense accounts.

But Judge Boyd, in a move that has perplexed some in the local legal community, instead of simply moving to appoint Brown, instead has filed what is know as a “scheduling order” for a hearing on the matter.

That move gives Martin 21 days from Oct. 26 — the day Boyd filed his scheduling order — to respond to the request for a special prosecutor or request a hearing before the judge. The same scheduling order gives Caloia another seven days to respond to Martin’s response.

In most investigations of elected officials accused of wrongdoing, at least in this writer’s experience, the suspected wrongdoer does not know he or she is under scrutiny.

But Acha and his team have gone public with their allegations, so that is not an issue here. Martin clearly knows he is under the spotlight and has denied doing

anything illegal or wrong.

In another unexplained move, Judge Boyd has sealed the file that contains Caloia’s written request for a special prosecutor, as well as Boyd’s scheduling order, and perhaps other documents pertaining into what is rapidly becoming quite a muddled affair.

It is fair, it seems, to ask why would the judge seal a case file such as this, wherein the particulars already are well known to the public, the legal community and the investigative subject himself? Caloia apparently did not request that the matter be kept sealed and away from public scrutiny, so why bother?

Why would the judge give Martin 21 days to respond to Caloia’s request, since her request was made without Martin’s involvement, and since, given his public protestations of innocence, his likely response is going to be, “I didn’t do anything wrong! Why investigate me?”

And Caloia, predictably, is going to respond to Martin’s response by declaring, “I cannot be the investigating official in this matter, I have a conflict!”

Again it seems fair to ask, why this set of delays in what could, ultimately, turn out to be a significant matter of deep public interest?

Is it that the judge feels affronted by the whole thing, and feels the courts are being improperly used in a game of political badminton?

If so, so what? It’s arguably not his job to decide the merits of the Democrats’ allegations, at least not at this point. It is, however, arguably his job to explain why he is declining to name a special prosecutor in a case brought before him in a formal, legal manner.

Is it because the judge and Martin are friends?

Again, so what? If that is true, then he should recuse himself (as Caloia essentially has done) and pass the request along so that a special prosecutor can be named and the case put before another, less conflicted judge.

At this point, the only point of clarity in all this is that no one is willing to talk to the press about it. At least that has been the position of Ninth District Court Clerk Jim Bradford, whose reply to a query by a reporter was, “I can’t tell you anything,” after citing Boyd’s sealing of the case file.

Lurking in the corner of the room, of course, is the minor matter of an electoral battle between Martin and Acha that concludes on Nov. 8, but which at this point seems guaranteed to not be influenced by any possible outcome of this case.

• FocusedKids™ is a program created by Kathy Hegberg, M.A., in 2013. Piloted in all the programs offered by Valley Settlement Project, FocusedKids teach children ages 0-4, parents, teachers and caregivers about the developing brain by using a brain chart and puppets. Kids learn how the brains works and, using mindfulness exercises, how to manage emotions so they can focus in the present. Parents and teachers learn how to facilitate healthy development of the young brain in ages 0-4. This is a program steeped in the work by Susan Kaiser Greenland on mindfulness with children, and Goldie Hawn’s program, MindUP, teaching children about their brain. It also reflects Daniel Goleman’s work in his books “Emotional Intelligence” and “Focus”; Adele Diamond’s work on the developing brain; Dan Siegel’s books “Whole Brain Child” and “No Drama Discipline”; and the work at the Momentous Institute in Dallas, Texas. Evidence-based research about mindfulness programs (particularly those based in neuroscience) in schools and homes suggests that the benefits include: improved self-management, stronger ability to pay attention, calmer/less reactive behaviors in the face of difficulties, improved relationships, and better academic performance. Valley Settlement Project is working to develop an outcome measure so that the can track impacts to its participants.

As the Town of Carbondale grapples with angry citizen demands for increased street safety, an advisory committee to the Board of Trustees will hold a public meeting on Nov. 7 to gauge citizen feelings about which are the most heavily used pedestrian routes in town and how to make them safer at night.

The meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. at Town Hall (511 Colorado Ave.), is being hosted by the Bicycle, Pedestrian and Trails (BPT) Committee, in partnership with Land + Shelter consultant Andi Korber.

According to an outline and statement about the meeting, issued by Trustee Ben Bohmfalk (liaison to the BPT committee), the meeting’s main purpose is to present a draft map of potential important “safe routes home,” questions about which streets people typically use more than others, and what people are hoping to see the town do in the way of making the streets more user-friendly and safer.

The genesis of the meeting goes back to last summer, following a couple of late-night assaults on women along streets that have little or no street lighting — one a sex-assault attempt against an adult women, the other (according to police) a non-sexual assault against a female minor.

A group of residents, mostly women who said they have long felt unsafe walking the nighttime streets in certain parts of town, showed up at a trustees’ meeting in late August to protest what they felt was a lack of action by town officials in response to the attacks.

Stung by the criticism, and by accusations of a lack of interest on the part of town officials, the trustees called for increased police presence in areas where a lack of lights keeps the streets dark at night, free self-defense courses to be offered at the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center, and turned the matter over to the BPT committee for review and recommendations.

At the upcoming meeting, Bohmfalk’s statement declared, “The town would sincerely like your input on how you walk and where you go to help further study this issue and identify any priority actions, improvements or programs we can put in place.”

In addition, the statement continues,“We’d like to hear where you feel safe, where it feels iffy, and where you feel unsafe.”

One example of an area where pedestrians and cyclists feel unsafe at night, according to members of the public as well as trustees, is the Rio Grande Trail through town.

Although there was some initial discussion of adding lights to sections of the trail that have been dark at night, trustees were somewhat surprised to hear from residents that the trail is considered a scary place to walk or bike at night regardless of lighting.

It was that realization that largely spurred town officials to begin the search for “safe routes,” as identified by the public, and suggestions about how to make the streets safer.

Among the ideas that have been brought up, according to Bohmfalk’s memo, have been: • Additional patrols by police and citizens in areas where a lack of lighting contributes to darkened streets and trails;

“If you support or oppose any of the ideas above, or if you have other suggestions for improving pedestrian safety at night, the town welcomes your input,” Bohmfalk’s memo concludes, urging members of the public to show up at the meeting or, if that is not feasible, take an online survey available at tinyurl.com/saferoutes81623.

• Additional lighting in certain areas; • Better promotion of the police department’s “safe ride home” program (call 963-2662 for a ride from an officer); • Creation of a cell-phone “app” that allows a user to “ping” the police department with a distress call by a single tap of a button; • And “safety call stations” that record video surveillance when activated.

Obituary Eric Johnson 1930-2016 Eric Johnson, a 15-year resident of Port Orford, Oregon, stone sculptor, co-owner of the Johnson Gallery and former Redstone resident, passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Oct. 25. Eric had been struggling with Alzheimer’s for the past 11 years, but a series of strokes in the past few weeks, brought his struggle to an end at the age of 86.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry Johnson, who will continue to run the art gallery, and ďŹ ve of his six grown children, two children of Sherry’s and several beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren and cousins.

Eric was born in Nova Scotia in eastern Canada.

After a brief ing at being a professional goalie on a local ice hockey team, he joined the Canadian Army and was sent to Korea. He served 14 years in the army and proudly taught for many years at the Corp school.

After retiring from the military, he moved to upstate New York and tried his hand at corporate America, working for Kodak and Bendix. He decided that he really wanted to become a sculptor and so moved his family to the Oregon coast in the early ’70’s, living in North Bend and later for a year in Port Orford, where he was briey active in the local art scene of that era.

He had been carving in wood, when someone gave him a piece of marble. He decided he could “carve it just as fast as wood and be paid twice the price.� He packed up the car and drove to Marble, Colorado, where he had heard that marble was just laying around on the ground “free� for the picking. He camped out among

the big pieces of discarded marble from the Lincoln Memorial and began a long and distinguished career of being a well-known marble sculptor.

In 1982 he opened the Redstone Art Center. Two months later, he met his future wife, Sherry, as she and her son stopped at the gallery, while camping in the Rockies. Three days later, before she left to return home to San Diego, he asked her to return as soon as possible to marry him. They were married three months later and

sculpture symposium that he had been invited to attend near Beirut, Lebanon. They became friends and he asked Eric to come to Russia and stay at the retreat for Russian artists north of Moscow, which he and Sherry decided to do that Christmas. They began visiting yearly and Eric sculpted in the studios that were available there. After ďŹ ve years he was asked to join the Russian Union of Artists and a piece of his work has a permanent home there.

Eric Johnson’s sculptures can be found in outdoor sculpture gardens and many private business collections.

He was very proud that a sculpture of his is also in the Vatican. It was while he was sculpting a larger than lifesize ďŹ gure of the Virgin Mary for a Catholic church on the East coast that he decided to become Catholic. The sculpture took six months to complete in front of the church and Eric was often heard to say later, “You don’t mess with Mary for six months and not become Catholic!â€?

Eric and Sherry moved to Port Orford in 2002, bought a two-story, 75-year-old house and started a gallery there 14 years ago in half of the downstairs.

Eric was fascinated by all animals but was particularly fond of cats (of all sizes, which he often carved – like a life-size mountain lion). A memorial gift will be given in his honor to the Port Orford Friends of Feral Cats, PO Box 964, Port Orford, OR 97465.

He chose not to have a traditional memorial service but preferred something less formal, similar to an Irish wake. On the day he passed away, those gathered at the Agate Bar drank toasts to him and after mass at St. John’s Catholic Church on Oct. 30, those friends present raised a glass to him in farewell.

Dear Editor: “Maybe I am not cut out for this ‌â€?.

Have you ever asked yourself that question?

Dan has the support of our two previous mayors and every current trustee who is not a mayoral candidate. Dan has served on the Glenwood Springs City Council and has been elected by his fellow board members to lead the boards of RFTA, the Waldorf School, and the Carbondale Board of Trustees.

Why do so many of us support Dan and want him to be our next mayor? Because he is level-headed, well-informed, and openminded. Dan facilitates an efďŹ cient, effective and inclusive public process that yields results. We need a mayor who can represent the whole town of Carbondale, who has earned the support of his fellow trustees, and who follows through on ideas to get things done.
