We Come and Go

By Jade Moss I’m sitting on a train in Japan. I know how to spell where we are going, but I’m still not sure we’re on the right train. This particular car is crowded; I’m seated between an elderly man and a girl who can’t be older than twelve. Both are sitting silently, faces slack, staring at their feet. On the other side of the car are businessmen in black suits and starched white shirts.

There are young women in designer shoes and schoolchildren in uniforms. There are teenagers dressed in garish outfits from the American 1980s and elderly women with shopping bags on their laps. They come and go. Come and go.

The steady hum of the air conditioning and the rattling of the wheels on the track fill the silence of the cabin. Thomas stands in front of me, both his tattooed arms extended to grip the bars that run across the

He leans forward and kisses me. This boy loves me in a reckless sort of way.

“How many more stops?”

“Four, I think, until Zushi, then we’ll need to switch trains.”

I look out the window behind me. The sky hangs so low that it feels as though it is going to fall out of the atmosphere on top of this city. I wish that it would. I want to be crushed by the weight of something unfamiliar. The houses closest to the train tracks are blackened and crumbling, their sheetrock eaten away, exposing the wooden bones underneath like carcasses torn and consumed by a starving predator.

It has been a long day. I still have sand stuck to the soles of my feet from the beach at Kamakura. Thomas and I swam out past where we could touch, like we used to do in California before he made the military his mistress. Soon this train ride will be over and we will be back at the hotel.

Tonight, we’ll have sex in a desperate, fleeting sort of way. It cost me 1,200 dollars, 27 hours and 5,470 miles to get here but I can’t stay. It’s all so temporary … this train ride, these people, this boy leaning over me and smiling. Here, in my present tense, the future haunts.

The doors slide open and I am pushed out of the train by the weight of so many bodies needing to get out. Thomas’ hands are on my shoulders; their presence is comforting here, in a place where I do not belong. On the platform, we step away from the crowd. I look around. This is not Zushi. This is not where we are going.

Prop 105: much speculation, few hard facts

The arguments for and against GMO labeling requirements on foods produced in Colorado can be boiled down to “health vs. economics.” However, when making their case, both sides are relying mostly on speculation rather than hard evidence.

Proponents of GMO labeling are concerned with negative impacts on human health, while opponents say GMOs have been proven safe, but there is no scientific evidence of the danger or safety of GMOs, because no long-term human health studies have been conducted.

The exception is allergen testing. A paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that a Brazil nut protein introduced to soybeans to improve their nutritional quality was able to provoke an allergic reaction in people with Brazil nut allergies.

That prompted the American Medical Association to call for mandatory premarket safety and allergen testing of genetically engineered foods, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not currently require any testing of these products

before they are put on the market.

The FDA also has no nationwide labeling requirements regarding genetically engineered products.

Opponents of Prop 105 point out that we have been modifying our food crops for centuries by selective breeding methods, therefore genetically engineered foods must be safe for human consumption. Proponents argue that crossbreeding three or four varieties of tomatoes is not the same as genetically engineering corn to produce pesticides in its cellular tissue.

Again, both sides are speculating as to the long-term health effects of genetically engineered foods, as no scientific evidence is available either way.

On the economic side, opponents of GMO labeling are concerned with possible negative impacts on farmers and consumers, while proponents argue that it won’t significantly increase costs.

Prop 105 opponents cite a study by private research firm Northbridge Environmental Management Consultants, which estimated that California’s Prop 37 would have raised an average family’s yearly food bill by as much as $400.

Proponents cite “Costs of labeling genetically modified food products in N.Y. State,” by professors of applied economics at Cornell University, which said the annual cost increase to consumers could be under $2, depending on a variety of factors.

Again, these studies are purely speculative, but in the 64 countries that already require GMO labeling there has been no significant rise in food costs for the consumer.

It’s also unclear whether GMO labeling will decrease revenues to farmers and manufacturers. While some markets may be negatively impacted by the labeling requirement, because consumers choose not to buy genetically engineered products, others might actually experience an increase in revenues. If Prop 105 passes, Colorado will be one of the few states that meets the international standard, which could increase demand overseas.

Opponents of Prop 105 argue that nationwide labeling standards already provide a reliable way to know which foods are made without genetically engineered ingredients. It’s true that products labeled “certified organic” are required to be GMO PROP 105 page 6

Surls center a no-go; roundabout sculpture is a go John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent With about a month to go before the installation of the James Surls sculpture at Carbondale’s new roundabout, organizers who also had hoped to create a larger display space for Surls’ work in Carbondale confirmed this month that the idea has been shelved.

“It’s not going to happen,” said local philanthropist Jim Calaway on Monday, regarding the Surls Center for the Visual Arts.

Calaway, a retired petroleum tycoon who is a personal friend with Surls, not only went to bat on behalf of the Surls Center, but also has contributed $100,000 toward the sculpture’s price tag. Calaway’s wife, Connie, and Sue Edelstein, raised the $130,000 needed to complete the $230,000 deal.

Surls, an internationally renowned artist whose work can be found in a vast number of museums and other venues, agreed that the Surls Center plans are not being pursued.

“But that does not mean the idea would be totally dead,” Surls added. “I’m not leaving here,” and he said he would be open to giving a Surls Center of some sort another try at a later date.

of some controversy in 2013, when the town asked for proposals to make use of the vacant, town-owned Gordon Cooper Library building at the corner of Fourth and Garfield.

The Surls Center for the Visual Arts was one of several proposals, including a center for the performing arts and a Family Gathering Center with an early child care component.

The Surls center got the nod from the Carbondale Board of Trustees in May 2013, but in January 2014 the committee behind the Surls Center effort announced it was abandoning the library as a venue.

Calaway said on Monday that “we

worked real hard” on the idea of using the library, but added that both the architect of the project, John Baker, and Surls himself “came to the conclusion that it wouldn't work there.”

The building is now called the Launchpad and houses a combination of gallery space for the Carbondale Council on the Arts and Humanities, and facilities for Dance Initiative, the dance organization that had bid for use of the building in the first round of proposals.

After walking away from the library proposal, Calaway said on Monday, a committee looked at other potential sites, including a large parcel of land just to the north of Town Hall, owned by former Trustee John Foulkrod and some partners.

“But we couldn’t work anything out,” Calaway said.

The committee then turned its attention to raising money for the sculpture installation at the roundabout.

At the same time, Surls found himself receiving commissions from international clients in various places around the world.

“I am really loaded down over the next couple of years,” Surls said in a telephone interview on Monday. He worried that the

work involved in spearheading the Surls Center effort could become overwhelming, and noted, “I’ve got enough to do on my own, in my own world.”

As late as March of this year, web postings showed hope that the Surls Center would still become a reality, but Surls and the committee decided otherwise.

“He decided, and I agreed with him, that the museum was not going to work,” Calaway said.

Calaway said the money for the sculpture installation is in hand, and that the funds will be partially used to make a marble base pulled from the historic Yule Marble Quarry in the nearby village of Marble.

Plus, he said, a “lighting expert” has designed a lighting system to illuminate the sculpture, which also will be paid for using the money raised by the committee, and there are plans to install a bench and donor plaque in the area surrounding the roundabout.

“It will be a place for people to sit and admire the beauty of this place, and the sculpture,” Calaway said proudly.

Any money left over, Calaway said, will be donated to the town to help pay the costs of landscaping the roundabout.

Pink Bunny owners rile neighbors over accusations Trustees hear both sides John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent A spat between neighbors in old-town Carbondale, which in part evokes differing interpretations of the town's historically relaxed and “funky” appearance, has erupted in recent meetings of the town's board of trustees and sent town staffers searching into allegations of zoning code violations by one or the other neighbor.

The spat that got it all started is between Veronica Whitney and Charlie Wertheim, 660 Lincoln Ave., and their neighbors, Julia Farwell and David Galey, who live at 188 N. Seventh St. (at the corner of 7th and Lincoln).

Their properties are adjacent to each other in the 600 block of Lincoln Avenue next to the Carbondale Recreation Center. Both properties are just south of an area of town affectionately called “The Architects’ Ghetto,” due to the number of architects who built distinctive homes there in the late 1990s and early 2000’s.

Whitney and Wertheim have been planning to build a bed and breakfast on a vacant lot that they own on Lincoln Avenue, which sits between their property and that of Farwell and Galey, and which features the Pink Bunny wire sculpture that once sat on Main Street as part of the Art aRound Town program.

The Whitney/Wertheim development concept has been dubbed the Pink Bunny B&B. Whitney appeared at the Sept. 23 meeting of the trustees to complain about what she feels is the unacceptably messy condition of her neighbor's lot and driveway.

Specifically, Whitney reported that Farwell and Galey last summer parked an RV in their drive, partially on what appears to be the town's right of way, and had people liv-

ing in it. In addition, she complained that her neighbors have stored a boat and snowmobiles improperly on their property, and have built a shed that she claims sits in the town's right of way.

Regarding the storage of vehicles partially on the public right of way, Whitney told the trustees, “They keep calling it their driveway.

“This (the public right of way) has become a parking lot” and “a big mess,” she concluded, to the point where she worries it will detract from the viability of the business they hope to create.

In response, Farwell showed up at the trustees meeting on Oct. 14 and declared that Whitney had “slandarized me” and had told “lies about my property.”

The vehicles Whitney spoke of belong to Galey, Farwell told the trustees.

And while she conceded that the vehicles are sometimes stored on the property, it is only during “times when they are on our driveway for cleaning, repair work, etc.,” according to a copy of her remarks that she provided to The Sopris Sun. She maintained that her driveway does, in fact, cross a public right of way, but that the town has known of it and sanctioned the practice.

As for the RV, she acknowledged that it sat in front of her house for two and a half weeks last summer, while Galey's mother was visiting in July, and that she was living in the RV to get some privacy and because she was allergic to Farwell's cat.

“Everybody (on) that side of the street uses the town right of way for personal use,” Farwell said, including Whitney, and Farwell denied Whitney's charge that she had allowed others to live in the RV at different times.

“I'm asking you as trustees — don't take the funk and the messy vitality out of old town. That's just not cool and there will be a backlash from the masses who enjoy things just the way they are,” Farwell said. “Don't funk with the funk, okay?”

Invoking Hendricks Farwell’s remarks echoed positions held by the late Brad Hendricks, who during a stint as a town trustee advocated an “ugly-up Carbondale” campaign to discourage unwanted growth by making the town less at-

tractive to visitors and newcomers.

Town officials have indicated they do not believe there are any code violations involved in the dispute, although town manager Jay Harrington said it would take a formal survey to determine whether there is an unacceptable encroachment on the town's right of way.

“At this point, we don't see any compliance issues,” Harrington told The Sopris Sun, noting that “there's always a level of gray area” whenever issues of code compliance are raised in such situations.

He added that, as of Tuesday, Whitney had not submitted a formal application to the town for a bed-and-breakfast on Lincoln, and that an application, if submitted, would go through the town's review process.

Hundreds respond to recreation survey Sopris Sun Staff Report More than 600 citizens responded to the online Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan survey posted on the town’s website, said town manager Jay Harrington in his weekly report. Stakeholder and public input meeting continue through Oct. 25, with the final keypad polling public session at town hall at 6 p.m. on Oct. 23.

The final survey presentation will take place during an open house at town hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 25.

Other items from Harrington’s weekly report include: • Street crews continue to work on dry wells and other drainage problems. They have also been working on the septic system at Gateway RV Park.

• Parks staff continues to blow out irrigation systems for the season. The ditch system was shut down on Oct. 15.

• There has been a “rush” on excavation permits because the town has a Nov. 15 deadline for excavations in the rightsof-way.

• The old Carbondale Landfill on Missouri Heights has been experiencing some settling. Staff is working with the state on corrective action.

Garfield County Board of Adjustment openings The Garfield County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) is currently seeking volunteers to fill seats on the Board of Adjustment.

The following events are drawn from incident reports of the C’dale Police Dept.

FRIDAY Oct. 3 At 4:35 p.m. officers stopped a vehicle on Highway 133 for failure to yield. Officers found booze in the vehicle and arrested the 20-year-old driver for minor in possession of alcohol.

FRIDAY Oct. 3 At 10:56 p.m. an employee at a liquor store called police and reported that someone stole a bottle of gin.

SATURDAY Oct. 4 At 12:37 a.m. a citizen told police that she’d left her coat in a downtown bar and someone stole her cell phone, passport and debit card from a pocket. There are no suspects at this time.

SATURDAY Oct. 4 At 12:52 a.m. officers responded to a disturbance at a downtown bar. Officers contacted a 41-year-old suspect and were informed by Garfield County dispatch that he had two restraining orders against him that forbid the purchase or consumption of alcohol. When questioned, the man admitted to drinking four beers. Police arrested him and took him to jail for violating a restraining order.

SATURDAY Oct. 11 At 1:13 p.m. police received a report of a vandalized vehicle on Barber Drive.

TUESDAY Oct. 14 At 9:25 p.m. officers received a call that transients were making people feel uncomfortable at the area of the Cowen Center. When police responded, they discovered four men, ages 38 to 52, drinking and playing a guitar. They were issued summonses for third degree trespassing.

Soccer boys host first round

Roaring Fork High School hosts a fourteam opening round of the 3A boys soccer state playoffs, with the #3 ranked Rams facing #30 Roosevelt at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 24. If Roaring Fork gets by Roosevelt, it faces the winner of the Pagosa Springs/Peak to Peak game at 1 p.m. on Oct. 25. If the Rams make it out of the round of 16, they’ll continue to the quarterfinals on Oct. 31. After that, the semi-finals are Nov. 5 and the championship game is Nov. 8.

Basalt, Aspen and Coal Ridge also made the 32-team tournament. The Longhorns, ranked #31, face #2 ranked Frontier Academy at 1 p.m. on Oct. 24; #16 ranked Aspen takes on #17 ranked The Pinnacle at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 24.

On Nov. 5-6, North Bend, Washington on Nov. 16 and Portland, Oregon on Nov. 20. Rolling into 2015, 5Point plays Aspen on Jan. 17 and Chattanooga, Tennessee Feb. 7. Look for 5Point to touch down again in Carbondale next April.

As construction workers clicked photos on their cell phones, they also sought safety on their rigs and equipment last Thursday afternoon as a fall cattle drive headed from summer digs on BLM grazing leases, past the City Market parking lot and the new roundabout construction zone, then to winter digs on ranches outside of Carbondale. The semi-annual trek through town was a bigger challenge than usual as riders, horses and cattle had to negotiate not only the roundabout but a tangle of construction equipment, detours and physical obstacles on Highway 133 and Main Street that sometimes blocked their path. Despite those obstacles, the Nieslanik clan, their hired hands and volunteers (including friends and family members) did an amazing job of keeping the herd together as photographers, journalists, bicyclists and fans on foot followed the bovine parade through town.

Grow ’em: Lemons in your living room

By Sue Gray Sopris Sun Correspondent When speaking of agriculture, “greening” might not sound so bad, but it’s the nickname of a disease that could mean the end of Florida's annual $9 billion citrus industry if something isn’t done to stop it.

Named for the color of the misshapen fruit it produces, citrus greening disease or “greening” was first reported about 70 years ago in China, and has already caused crop failure in Asia, Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and Brazil.

Virtually all of Florida’s citrus groves have been infected, and the disease has killed millions of trees in the southeastern U.S. The Florida Citrus Commission said the 2013-14 season will probably end with the lowest orange crop in 29 years.

The disease enters the tree when plant lice called psyllid deposit bacteria while feeding on leaf sap. As the bacteria colonies grow, they starve the tree of nutrients, turn the fruit green, and eventually kill the tree. There is currently no cure for infected trees.

Federal agriculture officials recently allocated $25 million dollars toward research to prevent further spread of the bacteria, but greening has already been detected in some of California’s backyard citrus trees.

University of Florida researchers think they’ve discovered a chemical that kills the bacteria, but say it might be years before it could be commercially available to growers.

A solution In light of the failing Florida citrus industry, people who enjoy orange juice for breakfast or a squeeze of lemon in their iced tea might wonder whether those habits will become too expensive or even impossible in the near future.

Not to worry, says Jerome Osentowski, founder of Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute (CRMPI) in Basalt; we can grow our own citrus trees at home.

CRMPI is one of the premier high-altitude permaculture proving grounds and educational facilities in the world. It’s also integral to the Heritage Fruit Tree Project.

In the last five years, Osentowski’s team replicated hundreds of heritage trees by grafting branches from century old apple, plum, pear, apricot and cherry trees on to hearty rootstock. The trees were sold to homeowners, schools and municipalities as a way of preserving the heirloom fruit brought to the area by nineteenth-century homesteaders.

Using the same method, Osentowski is building a healthy inventory of citrus trees. Over 40 citrus trees were sold out of CRMPI last year, and Osentowski hopes to double or triple that next spring.

On a recent tour of the CRMPI grounds and greenhouses perched at 7,200 feet on the south side of Basalt Mountain, Osentowski points out tangerine, lemon and lime trees laden with fruit among a tropical food forest where 75 other tropical species flourish. The trees, most of which are several years old, are growing in the ground under the protection of a massive permaculture greenhouse that Osentowski designed and built with local architect, Michael Thompson.

Permaculture is a way of growing many different varieties of plants, both annual and perennial, in a symbiotic system that mimics the natural forest. The method has been shown by researchers worldwide to generate healthier and more productive plants.

The facility also contains the beginnings of next year’s commercially available container trees. Combining rootstock from three different dwarfing citrus and scion wood, which are last year’s branches from any of 25 different varieties of citrus in his greenhouse, Osentowski can create a tree small enough to fit in your sun room that can produce one or multiple varieties of fruit. That means you can harvest an orange, a lemon and a lime all from the same tree.

As for the citrus disease problem, Osentowski said his trees

The carrier for the bacteria, the Asian psyllid, can’t live in the Rocky Mountain climate.

“They’re looking for a silver bullet fix,” he said about the research to stop greening disease, “but they’re not considering that the problem might be in how the crops are grown.”

Noting that every major agricultural crop in the world is in crisis, Osentowski believes there will continue to be serious problems because of the unhealthy way crops are grown in monocultures and with heavy fertilizer and pesticide use.

“These diseases are evolving faster than we can find silver bullets to fix them,” he said, adding that the current agricultural system is “a big ship, and they can’t turn it very fast.”

In addition to bad farming practices, Osentowski thinks climate change is increasing the difficulty of growing crops in places that were once ideal growing zones. “Climate change means you have to keep going higher in elevation” to grow plants that need cooler temperatures, Osentowski said. But what about plants that normally grow in warm temperatures … like citrus?

Osentowski can create a tree small enough to fit in your sun room that can produce one or multiple varieties of fruit.

Gardening indoors If you want to grow citrus year-round in a Colorado climate of Zone 4 and 5, greenhouse designer Michael Thompson said that you have to increase your growing climate up to Zone 7. Thompson and Osentowski are partners in Eco Systems Design, Inc., which specializes in developing permaculture greenhouses and growing domes for schools, businesses and homeowners.

If your house is lacking a southern window or sun room, growing citrus would require investing in a small greenhouse or grow dome. Adding a season-extending structure to your property can cost from $10 to $50 per square foot, said Thompson, depending on your needs and desires.

Along with a half-dozen examples of different sized and shaped greenhouses at CRMPI, there are several such struc-

tures nearby, including the 42-foot diameter grow dome at Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale. The permaculture greenhouse was built under guidance from Thompson and Osentowski in 2010, and is used to teach math and science, as well as produce food for school lunches. Like the CRMPI greenhouses, it contains temperate-zone novelties such as olive and fig trees.

The dome was built from a kit, but was fitted with the “earth battery” or “climate battery” that is implemented by Thompson and Osentowski in all of their growing structures.

The innovative heating and cooling system is located three feet under the soil and works by redistributing the sun’s energy, using little if any electricity from the grid, which makes greenhouse operation in Colorado winters near net zero.

“If we can grow all of these things with net-zero energy use, why stop at growing radishes in a box?” Osentowski asks, referring to the raised-bed gardening methods used by many home gardeners. “We can take it to another level, and citrus is just one little part of it.”

Research and development at Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute has shown that high altitude citrus is a juicy prospect. If greening disease continues to wreak havoc in the southeastern U.S., Colorado might just become the new Florida.

It’s like a tornado came and we landed in Oz. An Oz filled with beautiful dancers, talented artists, fun musicians, ageless creatives and amazing munchkins at every turn (no witches here).

Our Oz is called The Launchpad and it wouldn’t have happened without the support of a fantastic community so thank you! It took courage and vision for our town trustees to believe in the project and pass the former Gordon Cooper Library on to CCAH and Dance Initiative. It took love and patience for the CCAH Board of Directors and Peter Gilbert, founder of Dance Initiative, to feel comfortable that this collaboration would bring out the best of both organizations while providing a creative home for the community.

It took astute design talent to transform the library into our new creative home, and architect Dana GnassleEllis not only produced The Launchpad, but she produced a beautiful (human) baby during this process as well.

B&H Contractors and Carbondale Light and Power worked hard to make this transformation happen in such a short time and for such a reasonable and kind cost.

Culinary artists Philip Kenzoir from Pan and Fork, and Lindsay Hughs from Silo shared their talents during our two opening events and the food was incredible. Both these artists are young caterers with growing careers and we appreciate they took time out to help us with this special opening.

Jacqi Edgerly, Ananda Bank, Wade Newsome, Brianne Jones, Chloe Burton, Lucy Lou Rog, Eric Baumheir and Aja McAdams and their wonderful family and Katrina Byars inspired us with possibility and talent while Chad Steig, Morgan Williams, Shawn Tonozzi and Aaron Laemmel helped facilitate our First Launch.

No more Jankovsky Dear Editor: More industrial traffic is coming thanks to Tom Jankovsky, who voted to trash Carbondale to approve a waste transfer station at the entrance of Carbondale on County Road 100 (in December 2012). This is permanent and will soon snarl traffic daily in front of our schools on Snowmass Drive and for commuters going to and from work daily on Catherine Store road.

Mr. Jankovsky hijacked the will of the people and voted in approval after relaxing the requirements set out in the county code for a project that involved potential hazardous waste and harm to the welfare of the citizens. Jankovsky approved this project despite confirmed land use code violations and overwhelming opposition from public.

All the neighboring homeowners associations and the government of Carbondale sent letters to Jankovsky and the commissioners opposing the project.

So Jankovsky claims to represent the will of the people and again wants to be our voice?

This is the same commissioner who “stood up to the oil and gas industry” on Four Mile Road (the road to Sunlight Ski resort where he sits on the board).

Jankovsky also approved spending $3 million in funds for road improvements for this route.

Last time I checked, Count Road 100 has far more regular traffic and a bridge that has been confirmed to be inadequate for handling the overwhelming increase in truck traffic. Where is the new Catherine Store bridge that was promised?

Jankovsky justified his vote to trash Carbondale by claiming that a handful of jobs would be created. Where are those jobs? They currently do not exist.

Fool me once. Are we ready to be fooled twice?

Jankovsky trashed Carbondale. Now it is our turn to trash Jankovsky.

Vote for Michael Sullivan for county commissioner. He will enforce our land use code, protect the welfare of citizens and stop the closed-door shenanigans of the current county commission.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP GARDEN Town of Carbondale The Town of Carbondale used Lottery dollars to help create the Third Street Carbondale Community Partnership Garden. The new space contains about 40 garden plots with a submersible irrigation pump. Local gardeners can sign up for and tend their own plots while sharing knowledge and experience that helps the community and especially children, to understand where food really comes from. The new garden has even led to the creation of a local farmer’s market. Great job!

The third annual Spectrum Dance Festival took place on Oct. 17-18 with performances on Friday evening and a breakdance competition on Saturday. Workshops were also held during the day on Saturday and Sunday at the Launchpad.

Coralie Ahrens: An eight-year old making a difference

By Adele Craft Sopris Sun Intern Coralie Ahrens, a local eight-year old, is fund-raising to benefit girl’s education in Afghanistan. She learned about the issues in Afghanistan when she read “The Breadwinner,” by Deborah Ellis. In the story, 11-yearold Parvana is living in Kabul. One day, her father is arrested for the crime of having a foreign education, leaving the family without any way to make money or even shop for food.

In Afghanistan, girls are forbidden to earn money, so Parvana transforms herself into a boy and becomes the breadwinner. During the course of our interview, Coralie explained numerous situations from the book in which girls were being mistreated. For example, the main character of the book was often beaten.

In order for her and other Afghan girls to rise out of their situation, they must be educated.

NaNoWriMo? Yes you can

By Barbara Dills Sopris Sun Correspondent November is mostly known for Thanksgiving. And, of course, the opening of local ski areas (that is, if the weather cooperates).

But take note: it’s also National Novel Writing Month, and the Garfield County Library branches in Carbondale and Glenwood Springs are inviting anyone and everyone to take part in this year’s national event. Last year 310,095 adult participants and 89,500 students and educators around the world signed up at www.nanowrimo.org to be part of this celebration of writing and words.

To encourage local participation, GarCo Library will be offering “Write-Ins” throughout the month: at the Glenwood Springs Branch Library on Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. starting Nov. 2; and at the Carbondale Branch Library on Mondays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. beginning on Nov. 3. The last Sunday of the month is Nov. 30, and in honor of the finish line, the Glenwood Library will stay open as late as there are writers writing, according to Branch Manager Sue Schnitzer. Schnitzer took the novel writing plunge for the first time herself last November and credits the combination of the goal and the deadline for helping her meet this new challenge. Writers of all ages, beginner through experienced, are welcome. Snacks will be provided. A limited number of digital writing devices will be

available for those who need them.

NaNoWriMo, as it’s referred to affectionately by those in the know, is not for the faint of heart, pen or computer keyboard. Adult participants are challenged to write a 50,000word novel in 30 days. Young writers can set more modest word-count goals. Local musician Marc Bruell and daughters Emily and Renee have made NaNoWriMo a family tradition ever since Roaring Fork High School teacher Adam Carballeira encouraged Emily to participate as an eighth grader at Carbondale Middle School five years ago. This year will be no exception in the Bruell home. Several students in “Carb’s” Creative Writing Class at RFHS are reportedly planning to sign up as well. If you’ve ever had even the faintest urge to write a novel, this could be the nudge you’ve been waiting for.

The NaNoWriMo.org website offers encouragement and a way for writers to set their goals and track personal progress. You never know what might happen. According to the site, a number of published novels started as NaNoWriMo projects. Said Marc, “Writing a novel was at times a transcendent experience for me, and I wasn’t expecting that. It turned me on to the possibility of trying something else creative — in my case, some new techniques on the guitar — and seeing what might become of it. That was a neat discovery.”

It is very difficult for girls to get an education when they have no access to schools or books.

Ahrens said the book told her, “[Afghani girls] need to go to school in secret. The girl in the story hid some of her very special books. When the Taliban came, they wrecked everything … but the books that she hid stayed safe so she could keep getting a good education.” Ahrens also pointed out that when girls get an education, they are more likely to act freely, without the influence of a male authority figure. By enabling girls to make decisions as individuals, they can improve their situations.

Ahrens says she wants to raise money for the girls because, “When I heard how badly they were treated, I thought that they should have the same rights as us. They can’t walk out into the street with a piece of skin showing. They have to cover up their whole bodies and can’t go anywhere without the permission of their father or brothers.” Ahrens points out that our lives in America are very different from those of girls in Afghanistan. In the

United States, everyone has access to an education. Ahrens contrasts her life with those of Afghani girls, stating, “We can turn cartwheels and run around without a boy having to be there. We can walk across the street without being hit or beaten.”

Ahrens and her sister Ramona are home schooled. They subscribe to the un-schooling method, which allows children to explore topics they are interested in at their own pace. Ahrens says that she has the freedom to learn what she wants. That is very different from the girls in Afghanistan.

Ahrens was inspired by “The Breadwinner” and is taking action by selling handmade personalized embroidery. Her pieces range from $5 to $15 and she would also be happy to take any donations. Obituary Harvey E. Mccann 1927-2014 Harvey E. McCann passed away peacefully in South Jordan, Utah on Oct. 7, 2014. He was 86.

Harvey McCann was born on Nov. 21, 1927 to John Edward and Clara May Harvey McCann in Columbia, Utah. In the early 1930s, the family moved to western Colorado, where Harvey and his dear brother and best friend, Glenn, were raised in the Crystal River Valley at Placita and grew up in the shadow of majestic Chair Mountain. In 1945 he graduated from Carbondale Union High School, whereupon he immediately joined the U.S. Army toward the end of World War II. He was soon assigned to the Army Air Corps and its successor, the U.S. Air Force, with a B-29 Bomb Group, wherein he served proudly until the spring of 1949.

After his military service, Harvey entered the Colorado School of Mines, receiving the degree of engineer of mines in 1953. Following several years in the private sector of the minerals industry, he was employed by the U.S. Geological

Survey, involved in administering mineral leasing on federally owned lands, from which he retired after some 20 years of service.

He was married in Carbondale following high school and later divorced.

There were two children from that marriage, Kelly and Kathy. Harvey married Fern Kroll of Utah in 1966. She had three children from a previous marriage: Denis, Judy and Gary. He was a member of the Methodist Church, Masonic Order and American Legion, all of Carbondale; and Elks Lodge of Aspen, Colorado.

Harvey is survived by his wife, Fern, of South Jordan; son, Kelly (Carol McCann), of Henderson, Nevada; daughter, Kathy McCann, Carbondale, Colorado; three stepchildren, Denis (Sheila) Kroll of West Jordan, Utah, Judy (Larry) Giles of West Jordan, Gary (Debbie) Kroll of South Jordan; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Oct. 11, 2014, at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary Chapel in Sandy, Utah. Online condolences can be sent via www.larkincares.com.

Replace Jankovsky Dear Editor: We desperately need a change in the Board of County Commissioners in GarďŹ eld County. The current board, of which Tom Jankowsky is a member, approved a solid waste transfer station on

County Road 100 outside of Carbondale despite overwhelming opposition at numerous meetings by area residents. Petitions against the facility signed by hundreds of voters, concerns of increased ďŹ re danger, ground water contamination, danger of increased truck trafďŹ c and so on were ignored in the decision to approve this use. Improvements in the bridge over the Roaring Fork at a cost of perhaps millions of dollars will be paid for by taxpayers so that this private enterprise can make a proďŹ t.

Was it because some of the main supporters of the commissioner’s campaign were principles in the station? Or was it because the commissioners almost always support business over the concerns of their constituents? For whatever reason, if this facility is built it will be a blight on the rural nature and the recreational use of this neighborhood.

Michael Sullivan is a great choice as a representative of the people and not of the oil and gas business. He is in favor of protecting the Thompson Divide and has the experience in public service to do the job.

Basalt hosts Westin hotel, RMI groundbreakings

By Steve Jundt Last week marked two highly anticipated groundbreakings in Basalt. Element by Westin, Basalt’s newest hotel, broke ground on Oct. 14 in an early morning ceremony at Willits Town Center. The LEED certified “sustainable” hotel will offer an important addition to the Basalt tourism industry, tax revenues and jobs. The stylish hotel will be the newest addition to Willits joining the popular shops and eateries surrounding Whole Foods.

Element by Westin will be a mix of 113 studios as well as one-bedroom suites featuring a fluid design of modular furniture, swiveling flat-screen televisions, large desks with open shelving, and custom-designed closets. Letters continued om page 19 GMOs not labeled Dear Editor: Why have GMOs never been labeled since ďŹ rst introduced in the 1990s? Genetically modiďŹ ed organisms are now in most American foods — with no way to know.

Americans have grown sicker and more obese than citizens in all other developed countries. I’ve beaten debilitating illness only after many years of ďŹ guring out food ingredients. Regardless, I’m tired of decrypting labels, while most countries require American manufacturers to label GMO foods.

Chemical companies that develop GMO seeds spend hundreds of millions of dollars lobbying against labeling in the U.S. They dictate GMO safety based solely upon their own research, while worldwide masses of farmers, scientists and organizations cry out the myriad perils of GMO industry.

Consumers should know genetically engineered crops are designed specifically to withstand high levels of toxic synthetic pesticides, (the latest being D2,4, a main ingredient in the Agent Orange bio-warfare defoliant in Vietnam).

They are patented species borne of crossing DNAs impossible to create in nature — such as virus or animal DNA with varieties of plants (or animals). But Proposition 105 is not about banning or warning about GMOs. It is strictly about labeling GMO packaged foods, excepting meat and dairy.

Whatever your political or scientific

stance, without GMO labeling there is no choice. Vote yes on 105.

Yes on 105 Dear Editor: This November, Coloradans have the opportunity to make history by voting yes on Proposition 105, which requires labeling on genetically engineered (GE) foods.

Washington and California were unable to pass similar initiatives because the biotech industry, giant food manufacturers and chemical companies spent millions to block labeling. Not surprisingly, this is occurring now in Colorado. If (GE) foods have all the beneďŹ ts the biotech industry is claiming, why wouldn’t the industry want labeling as a way to promote them?

Realize that almost all of the arguments you are hearing against labeling are being funded by these companies who are concerned about their bottom-line, not you.

Sixty-four other countries, including the European Union, already have labeling.

We have the right to know too.

GE foods have not been proven safe.

The process of genetic engineering is imprecise and causes signiďŹ cant damage to DNA, which can result in unpredicted and unintended effects. It involves forcing together genes from viruses, plants and bacteria, a process that could never occur in nature and results in a product that is foreign to our immune systems.

When the FDA policy regarding GE crops was drafted, scientists within the agency voiced their concerns about possible allergens, toxins, nutritional deďŹ ciencies and new diseases. Disturbingly, there have been no human clinical trials to determine whether (GE) foods adversely affect us. One can only hope that the health problems we’re seeing in some animal studies, like breast tumors and liver and kidney damage, do not translate over to us.

We need labeling so doctors can track what people are eating and determine whether GE foods are linked to food allergies and other health problems. The right to know what’s in our food is an issue that affects all of us, whether Republican or Democrat. We are in critical need for more long-term, unbiased scientiďŹ c research that includes human beings. Many organizations are advocating for more safety studies: The BMA, the European Network of Scientists for Environmental and Social Responsibility, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Environmental Medicine.

The debate around labeling genetically engineered foods has been deliberately blown up into something far more complicated and confusing than it need be. Proposition 105 is just a label. The safety of GE foods is unproven and we have a right to know whether we’re eating them. Please join me in voting yes on Proposition 105.

Van beek for sheriff Dear Editor: I’m writing to support James Van Beek for Eagle County sheriff. I have known James and his family for nearly 15 years and I know that he is a man of honesty, integrity and intelligence. In addition, James has the local law enforcement experience and history in Eagle County to understand our residents, visitors, friends and neighbors, plus invaluable experience in international law enforcement. I believe this combination gives him a unique perspective that would be excellent to have in the sheriff’s ofďŹ ce.

James also is a true believer in community and I’ve seen him helping out with more events and organizations than I can count over the years. Even when he was home only for a short time between deployments overseas as civilian law enforcement official, he was always willing to be involved in Eagle County events and activities.

The position of sheriff is one of the most visible in Eagle County, and it carries with it a huge responsibility. We need someone in that ofďŹ ce that is thoughtful, experienced, ethical and forthright. Someone who can handle complex logistics as well as sensitive situations. Someone who understands ďŹ scal responsibility. Someone who is connected to and cares about Eagle County. We need James Van Beek as Eagle County Sheriff.

Water woes easy to ID, hard to solve Amy Hadden Marsh Sopris Sun Correspondent The Colorado River serves about 40 million people from Colorado to California but that won’t always be the case. In a study released last year, the Bureau of Reclamation predicted that population throughout the Colorado River Basin could double by 2060. But, as population increases, water supply will not and basin states could face a water gap of 3.2 million acre-feet. Add climate change to the mix and existing western water supplies could also decrease over the next few decades.

In Colorado, between one million and 1.5 million acre-feet of water go to municipal and industrial uses each year. Agriculture uses about four times that much. So, where will the water come from and who will make sacrifices to keep it flowing?

Those were big questions discussed at the Colorado River District’s annual water seminar in Grand Junction last month, which included presentations by Brad Udall of the Colorado Water Institute, Aaron Citron of the Environmental Defense Fund, Mark Harris of the Grand Valley Water Users Association, and others.

Big questions require big solutions, but the problem is no one seems to know what they are. Bradley Udall talked about the Central Arizona Project (CAP) and the decadeslong history of over-allocation of the Colorado River. In 1968, the CAP Act allowed Arizona to divert half its annual water allocation to Phoenix, Tucson and points south.

Udall, whose father Mo Udall and uncle Stewart Udall worked on the legislation, said CAP was the beginning of western water woes that have resurfaced due to recent low levels in Lakes Powell and Mead. “We call it the “structural deficit,” he said. “Basically, the Lower Basin is using more water than to which they’re entitled.”

Arizona, California and New Mexico use over 1 million acre-feet more per year than is typically released from Lake Powell. Even though Lake Mead gets its full allotment each year, water demands from the Lower Basin keep the reservoir from filling. As of Sept. 22, the water level in Lake Mead was below 40 percent and Lake Powell was half-full.

Udall says solutions to problems like this were built into the 1968 CAP Act but they won’t work in the 21st century. He said agreements among all seven-basin states are key to averting water shortages in the Colorado River Basin or to at least cushion the blow.

Agriculture is the biggest water user in the Colorado River Basin and it’s usually the go-to sector when water shortages threaten municipal needs. But, farming and ranching are a large part of life on the West Slope and if they disappear, so go the rural lifestyle, open

spaces, and local economies that depend on agriculture to survive. Not to mention the natural river systems and watersheds that support animals, plants and people.

Irrigation efficiency measures such as the Smart Ditch and sprinklers may help conserve water but New Castle rancher Brett Jolley has his doubts. He’s using sprinklers instead of flood irrigation on some of his fields but is concerned about return flows or the amount of water that goes back into rivers and streams. “With sprinklers, you wet the whole crop at the same time and you’re just wetting the crop maybe down two or three inches into the soil and the root zone and then the sprinkler is moved,” he explained. “So there isn’t much run-off.”

Jolley said return flows recharge the groundwater and that sprinklers — which don’t — are already creating problems with water wells near Silt. That means water efficiency methods like sprinklers could, in the long run, reduce the amount of water returning to streams and aquifers. “It’s a way more efficient way of irrigating but it changes how water is used and the return flows and the timing,” he added.

Aaron Citron, policy analyst with the Environmental Defense Fund, says the future of water in the West depends upon uncommon alliances, such as environmentalists and ranchers. And, he said policy changes will require a lot of work. “We’re continuing to have discussions with a number of [agriculture] voices and with the governor’s office and state administrators to figure out how can we create incentives for improved efficiency, how can we direct those incentives when people want them directed to environmental flows,” he said. “And most importantly, how can we do that without imperiling people’s water rights.”

Next thing she knew, he was striding west toward a car, and then he stopped to rendezvous with a waiting woman. She lost track of the pair at that point.

Bull’s-eye -eye

he metal corrals clank loudly as massive bulls at the Carbondale Wild West Rodeo pace frantically in their pens. These bulls are known for maliciously throwing riders from their backs, into the hard, dusty ground and sometimes charging at the fallen mount with lowerd horns while the rider scrambles for safety. They are creatures of aweinspiring beauty and spine-tingling terror, with black eyes rolling wildly from the commotion around them and hooves roughly pawing the earth below, turning sand to dust.

The bulls are led to a chute where humans are placed on their backs and then released into the open arena. Furious at having a gangly creature trying to ride him, a bull will buck and charge, hurling 2,000 pounds of raging flesh into the air, attempting anything to get the rider off his back.

But this story isn’t about the menacing beasts that dazzle us with such ferocious movement. It is about the courageous men who are associated with these bulls.

What is it like to be the person who comes between a bull and fallen rider?

And what is it like to be the rider, gripping such an animal with your knees, one hand clutched fast to the bull and the other flailing wildly as you try to hold on? Your clutch on the rope around the bull slowly slackens, you slip off entirely, every sound muted as you descend to the solid dirt of the arena. When you look up, the bull is towering over you, and you clumsily rush out of the arena to safety.

We see these brave people at the Carbondale rodeo every Thursday, whether coming in between a bull and rider as the bull fighter or competing in the bull riding event.

Bull riders make their sport look easy, as they try to stay on through those incredibly slow eight seconds. It’s hard to imagine what goes through the mind of a bull rider as he spends mere seconds clinging to the animal. Though it varies with each rider, most of them agree there’s no time to think critically when you’re in such a situation. “If you get to thinkin’ about it, you get in trouble,� stated Johnny Rebel, a cowboy who’s been bull riding for 14 years, five of them in the Carbondale rodeo. Rebel first began bull riding when a friend dared him that he wouldn’t get on a bull. He now trains by riding nine bulls a week.
