“Because of you”: CMC celebrates 50 years

By Dr. Carrie Besnette Hauser In the early 1960s, David Delaplane, a minister who was also part-time director of the Glenwood Springs Chamber of Commerce, opened a file folder labeled “education committee.” It contained only a list of names. Within months, the committee was revived and decided upon an impossibly bold idea: bringing a college to the central mountains.

Back then, Delaplane (who is now approaching 90 and still living in Colorado) took a simple idea and through sheer determination and true Western Slope confidence — plus a bit of good luck — made it a reality. Before the days of Interstate 70, international airports, cell towers, broadband Internet, mail-in voting and the many other conveniences we enjoy today, he and a small band of supporters traveled countless rugged miles and were joined by other visionaries, generous land donors and a majority of voters who, by a two-to-one margin, agreed to fund and support a concept that continues to thrive and evolve today.

On Oct. 2, 1967, Colorado Mountain College opened its doors at two residential campuses — Spring Valley near Glenwood Springs, known then as the “West Campus,” and Leadville, known as the “East Campus”

— to its first students. Today, the college operates 11 campuses and centers in Western Colorado — in Aspen, Carbondale, two in Glenwood Springs (also home to CMC’s administrative headquarters), Rifle, the Vail Valley, Steamboat Springs, Dillon, Breckenridge, Leadville and Buena Vista. It offers five bachelor’s degrees, 54 associate degrees, more than 60 certificates and myriad online, non-credit and lifelong learning courses.

Though few outside the original founders could envision what it might become, today the college positively influences nearly every aspect of mountain life. Many of the nurses, teachers, civil servants and first responders in our communities have received training at Colorado Mountain College. The region’s world-class ski resorts are filled with CMC alumni, from those operating giant grooming machines or designing the latest snowboard to the chefs preparing five-star delights or hotel managers striving to fill every guest with memories of a lifetime. The Isaacson School for New Media teaches the digital media skills needed for a rapidly evolving industry. And, let’s not forget the numerous small businesses and international firms that rely on the college to train their workforces.

A privilege It is a sincere privilege to work with a team of exceptional staff and faculty who embrace and preserve CMC’s open-access mission and innovative spirit while delivering service and learning excellence at unparalleled value. We stand on the shoulders of those who have shepherded the college along the way, ensuring its financial health and thoughtful adaptation to inevitable change. Eight former presidents have left their unique marks.

Trustees over the years — individuals you elect to follow state law and serve the college — have in turn served the taxpayer by keeping tuition affordable and academic programs strong, and by investing in state-of-the-art facilities right in our back yards.

The mainstream media, whenever they pull their heads out of the black hood that is corporate propaganda, has compared this standoff to the one in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge earlier this year. But the causes couldn’t be more different. The tribes are protecting their livelihood against a corporation’s illegal actions, while Bundy’s boys were protesting … what exactly? The fact that we have public lands that are managed by the feds? Standing up to a corporation for your right to life, liberty and the pursuit of clean drinking water is not the same as refusing to pay cattle grazing fees. Also, the tribes are not armed to the teeth with guns, ammunition and beer. It’s a sad state of affairs (and a red flag, if you ask me) when there’s more of a reaction from law enforcement to protect the property of a corporation than the United States of America’s land and property.

Imagine if new people came to town, killed most of our families and friends, carved the likenesses of their leaders into Mount Sopris, outlawed Waldorf and Montessori, and then started to drill in the Thompson Divide and build a pipeline up the Crystal. Would we stand our ground, peacefully united, to protect the land and water for future generations?

City Market granted an extension for Carbondale store

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The ongoing plans to build a bigger, more modern City Market grocery store in Carbondale have been delayed for a third time, thanks to internal ďŹ nancial shifts at The Kroger Co., the parent corporation that owns City Market and King Soopers in Colorado.

The town board of trustees (BOT) on Sept. 27 granted an extension to Feb. 28, 2017, for ďŹ ling the subdivision plat governing the development, which is to be built on property northwest of the intersection of Highway 133 and West Main Street, adjacent to the Colorado Rocky Mountain School grounds.

The project was approved in March, and calls for construction of a 59,000 square foot store, to replace the 44,000 square-foot store

that currently operates at the Crystal Village Plaza shopping center located to the south of the new store’s site.

The plat ďŹ ling deadline, which originally was set for June 14, has been extended twice before — once to Aug. 14 and then to Oct. 11, according to documents presented to the trustees.

In a letter to the town, King Soopers/City Market real estate division manager Joel Starbuck of Denver wrote that an “unforeseen capital reallocation� by the Kroger Co. is behind the requested extension.

Kroger, according to documents on its website, last month announced an “incremental $500 million share repurchase program,� which was linked to the freeze of assets, and in its second-quarter earnings

report issued in early September indicated it was reducing its anticipated capital-investment program from $4.4 billion to $3.9 billion.

The lower capital investments plan, according to a statement issued by the company, comes at a time when Kroger’s projected earnings and dividend payments also have been reduced on a per-share basis.

But, according to Harrington, he has not gotten any indications that the planned new store is threatened by these ďŹ nancial wobbles, and that the closing date on Kroger’s purchase of the property is scheduled for February of next year.

He reportedly told the trustees that the changes to the development schedule apparently have not changed the company’s pro-

jected opening of the new store next year.

The company has completed the engineering required prior to recording of the plat, according to a memo to the trustees, and the applicant has submitted a building permit application that currently is under review at town hall. Construction is scheduled to begin on the new store next spring.

According to statements on the Kroger Co.’s website, the company is in good ďŹ nancial shape, and sales are expected to grow at a rate of between 0.5 percent and 1.5 percent for the remainder of 2016 (between 1.4 and 1.8 percent for the year).

Kroger, according to its website, operates 2,781 retail food stores and other facilities, under a variety of local identities, in 35 states and the District of Columbia.

Seasonal fests continue downtown Sopris Sun Staff Report The annual Celtic Fest and Oktoberfest will take place on Oct. 7-8, starting on Friday at the 4th Street Plaza, and will include such activities as a “Best Legs in a Kilt” contest and a “Dirndl Dash and Kilt Klash where the traditions of Octoberfest and Celtic Fest collide, said Carbondale Town Manager Jay Herrington in his weekly report to town trustees, staff and others.

In other news from Harrington’s report: Carbondale’s street crew had a busy week, installing a dry well at Bonnie Fisher Park (behind the Third Street Center) and connecting the roof drains from the TSC to the dry well, and the parks crew had to repair part of the park’s irrigation system that was damaged during the installation of the dry well.

The street crew also helped set up Sopris Park for the annual Potato Days celebration, set up the 40-yard dumpsters and signs for Leaf Days, the town’s collection of yard waste, and installed new parking signs along Holland Drive just north of North Bridge Drive in River Valley Ranch, Harrington reported.

Town mowing crews will keep up with their regular schedule while the weather holds, and parks workers have reprogramming the irrigation system along Highway 133 so that the rotor heads along the bike path will start up at 10 p.m., which Harrington wrote is “a tough balancing act when there are 88 stations on the entire system.”

The town’s arborist, David Coon, has been meeting with residents about troublesome elm trees popping up in open space areas, which the town worries will result in heaving of road and drain systems if the trees are not taken out.

Youth recreation programming by the town continues apace, with various exercise-oriented activities, though the North Face Bike Park lessons and skateboard lessons have been wrapped up for the season.

Also available are numerous adult fall programming options, including a 4-on-4 volleyball league, pickleball league and tournament, drop-in basketball, soccer and pickleball, and others.

The Gateway RV Park closed down its operations for the year on Oct. 1, to reopen in May, 2017. The season saw usage numbers grow this year compared to last year, to 67 percent overall occupancy in 2016 versus 55 percent in 2015, Harrington reported.

In addition, the town’s ditches will be turned off on Oct. 14.

Harrington wrote that the Nettle Creek water treatment plant’s production has been reduced to 650,000 gallons per day due to a reduction in irrigation demand, and that the Roaring Fork treatment plant has been operating at 240,000 GPD. The Crystal Well remains inoperative due to state health department requirements.

Meanwhile, the Ram soccer boys fell to Vail Mountain 3-0. The loss puts Roaring Fork at 7-3 (3-2 in the 3A WSL).

Stephanie Askew is starting a ukulele band for ladies from 12-102 in age. The first meeting will be held at the Church at Redstone from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 17.

The group will meet the first and third Mondays of the month at the same time.

Homeless fund accepting donations The Carbondale Homeless Alliance is accepting contributions to its account at Alpine Bank and Amore Realty. Hick picks Bonedaler as judge Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper named Carbondale resident Anne Norrdin as a judge in the three-county 9th Judicial District on Tuesday. Norrdin has served as assistant district attorney since 2008. She earned her law degree from Oregon State University in 2005. She replaces retiring judge Daniel Petre.

Carbondale resident Ben Carlson will run in the Twin Cities Marathon as part of the Global Heroes program on Oct. 9, according to a press release. Carlson is battling stage IV lung cancer and is an advocate of dispelling the myth that lung cancer only affects smokers; he was diagnosed as a fit, non-smoking individual.

CARE, TRUU blesses animals Colorado Animal Rescue (CARE) and Two Rivers Unitarian Universalist hold their annual Blessing of the Animals at CARE, starting at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 8. Up the Crystal: Open space question looms large PitCo program

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Pitkin County ofďŹ cials are hoping the county’s electorate on Nov. 8 will extend a long-standing county Open Space & Trails property tax for another 20 years, and go along with efforts to add exibility to the use of the money collected under that tax.

Toward that end, the county has placed question 1A on the ballot that goes out to county voters.

According to an Aug. 24 memo from the Open Space & Trails (OS&T) Department to the Pitkin County commissioners, the question to voters clariďŹ es some parts of the existing OS&T program, which was set to expire in 2020, as well as adding language to the program’s authorizing text that permits a sliding scale of expenditures for the acquisition and maintenance of open space and trails.

The new language, as explained by OS&T Director Gary Tennenbaum, would allow the county to adjust its spending to the needs of the moment, more speciďŹ cally allowing a greater percentage of the tax collections to be spent on maintenance of properties that OS&T either owns or controls.

The original OS&T law, passed by the voters in 1990 and reauthorized in 1999 and 2006 for 10-year periods, set up a strict regimen for spending the roughly $11 million collected each year by the 3.75 mills in OS&T taxes. The lion’s share of the funds

were directed toward acquisition of property, and only 15 percent was allocated to maintenance programs, Tennenbaum said.

Now that the county has amassed some 20,000 acres of open space and approximately 75 miles of trails throughout the jurisdiction, Tennenbaum noted, the proportional cost of maintenance has risen sharply. “We have hit the limit on maintenance,â€? he remarked, explaining that the program is feeling the pinch to ďŹ nd funds for everything from weed control to repairs to trails and much more, because the department is limited to spending roughly $1.6 million on maintenance out of the total amount of tax revenue.

If passed, the revised OS&T code language would permit the department to allocate anywhere from 15 to 35 percent of tax revenues for maintenance. The sliding scale of expenditures would mean the department could allocate between 25 and 75 percent of its revenues for the acquisition and “improvement� of open space properties, and between 10 and 40 percent to the acquisition and improvement of trails, depending on current needs.

Up the Crystal And while most of the voters casting ballots for or against Question 1A live in the upper Roaring Fork River Valley, between Basalt and Aspen, a considerable number live in the Crystal River Valley. Pitkin County extends into the Crystal Valley in an area stretching from a few miles south of Carbondale up to an area just upvalley from Redstone and the top of McClure Pass.

Tennenbaum said the OS&T Department has done a lot of work in the Crystal River Valley, preserving a wide array of ranch lands, including conservation easements across Cold Mountain Ranch, the Sustainable Settings research ranch, and parts of the Leslie Wexner Ranch at the base of Mount Sopris, to name a few.

In addition, Tennenbaum said, the OS&T Department built the relatively new Crystal Trail that extends about ďŹ ve miles from Carbondale to just above the Crystal River KOA Campground (formerly known as the BRB Campground). He said OS&T is getting set to embark on a new planning process to determine the best way to extend the Crystal Trail all the way to the top of McClure Pass, where it is hoped that a companion trail-building effort on the Gunnison County side of the pass will result in a trail all the way from Carbondale to Crested Butte.

The OS&T Program also owns the area known as Red Wind Point along the old rail bed alongside the river; Filoha Meadows to the north of Redstone; the Penny Hot Springs property at the edge of the river; three park areas within the village of Redstone and the Sawmill Hill open space just above Redstone, the location of a large and very old grove of Ponderosa Pines.

And while the OS&T emphasis is shifting toward greater attention to maintenance and repairs, Tennenbaum said, “There’s still plenty of ag land potential ‌ open space potential, out thereâ€? in the upper Crystal River

Valley, land that might be preserved from development using OS&T funds.

Citizens group Because the county government cannot legally advocate for passage of Question 1A, a citizens group was formed to take on that task. The group is known as S.O.S., which stands for Stewards Open Space.

According to the S.O.S.’s website, (www.stewardopenspace.org), the county’s investment of OS&T funds comes to about $100 million over 25 years, which has been combined with roughly $47 million in open space funding from “partners� such as Great Outdoors Colorado (or GOCO, which offers grants from the Colorado Lottery fund), the City of Aspen, the Town of Basalt and the Town of Snowmass Village, and Eagle County.

Ballot Question 1A does not ask for a tax increase and, according to the S.O.S.’s website, continuing the existing tax rate represents about $29.85 per $100,000 of residential property valley, which comes to nearly $150 per year in taxes on a half-million-dollar home.

But, the website proclaims, “The value of all Open Space and Trails assets now owned by the people of Pitkin County is priceless� and must be maintained and, where possible, expanded for future generations.

Carbondale native ďŹ ghting for his life in Nashville hospital Shot during robbery

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer A Carbondale native, who was shot in the stomach during an apparent robbery attempt in Nashville, Tenn., on the night of Sept. 26, remained in the Vanderbilt University Medical Center on Oct. 3 after reportedly undergoing several operations to repair injuries sustained in the incident.

Hospital representatives, citing “federal lawâ€? as preventing them from saying more, would only conďŹ rm that Dietrich Minor, 27, whose nickname is “Deetz,â€? was still in the facility.

He had been listed in critical condition the day after the shooting, and a report on the Aspen Real Life website on Sept. 29 indicated that he was “stable and on a ventilator� at that time.

On another social media website, Minor was said to have been taken off the ventilator but still in serious condition at the end of last week.

On the GoFundMe.com fundraising website, donations to help defray Minor’s medical costs had reached $24,350 as of Oct. 3. Minor reportedly has no health insurance, having recently been “aged out� of his parents’ insurance policy.

A post on the GoFundMe site, uploaded on Oct. 3, announced a fund-raising “beneďŹ t ďŹ sh-fry cookoutâ€? scheduled for Oct. 8 at the Batter’s Box in Nashville, which advertises itself as a “mellow, smoke-friendly sports bar.â€?

The attack According to police, Minor was attacked at about 10 p.m., after he was believed to have stopped off at a convenience store to buy a pack of smokes before heading over to the Batter’s Box to meet friends.

According to Aspen Real Life, Minor is “a fourth-generation Carbondalian� and a 2008 graduate of Roaring Fork High School, where he and his brother, Chad, played football and baseball.

A comment on the website indicated that Minor then went to the University of Nevada Las Vegas for training in audio engineering.

Minor reportedly moved to Nashville several years ago, though his mother still lives in Aspen.

Attempts to reach Minor’s family were not successful on Monday, but one report indicated that the family had traveled to Nashville to be with the victim as he battles for his life.

Nashville police issued a media statement on Sept. 27, saying they were trying to identify the two men who attacked Minor and who were believed to also have robbed another Nashville man at gunpoint a short time earlier and only blocks away from where Minor was shot.

The men were described as one white man wearing a red “hoodieâ€? and black pants, and a black man wearing “a white shirt with a unique patternâ€? that was not described in more detail. The two reportedly ed the scene in a grey or silver SUV of unknown make and model.

A police spokeswoman said on Oct. 3 that there had been no new developments in the case.

A Sept. 28 story in The Tennessean newspaper reported that police had stepped up their presence in the neighborhood where Minor was shot, adding that another man, from California, had been shot to death the day before in a neighborhood about a half-mile away from the scene of the attack on Minor.

The Tennessean report, which referred to the shootings and robberies as “a spate of violent crime,� noted that so far in 2016 there had been 53 homicides in Nashville, the same number as were reported at this point in 2015.

OEDIT director visits Carbondale, GarCo Sopris Sun Staff Report Fiona Arnold, director of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT), will visit Garfield County on Oct. 6 to see first hand the role of energy efficiency, local power and alternative fuels play in diversifying the regional economy, according to a press release. She will be joined by Meredith Miller, OEDIT’s senior manager for regional economic development.

State Rep. Bob Rankin, R-Carbondale, will also participate in the countywide tour.

The visit will showcase local businesses that demonstrate the role that energy efficiency, energy management, alternative fuels and renewable energy plays countywide in helping households cut energy costs, stimulate investment, and create business opportunities.

Arnold and OEDIT staff are visiting at the invitation of Garfield Clean Energy (GCE), the countywide partnership comprised of the county government, all six municipalities, the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority and Colorado Mountain College.

CLEER, the Carbondale nonprofit contracted by GCE to run programs, has been the primary coordinator for Arnold’s visit and organizer of the tour to showcase the diversity of the clean energy economy in Garfield County.

The half-day tour will include a visit to a solar business and several Garfield County communities, businesses and facilities that have benefitted from alternative energy and efficiency work. The schedule includes: • At 8 a.m., Arnold and OEDIT staff will visit Sunsense Solar in Carbondale and meet with company staff, area contractors who work on efficiency upgrades and solar installation, Garfield Clean Energy vice chair and Carbondale Trustee Katrina Byars, Carbondale Mayor pro tem Dan Richardson and Garfield Clean Energy Board members.

• At 9:30 a.m. Arnold and OEDIT staff will board a van powered by compressed natural gas and head to Glenwood Springs to see the businesses that have benefitted from the growing clean energy economy, including a visit to the West Glenwood gas station where the area’s newest compressed natural gas pumps are located. Following the stop, she will visit New Castle and Silt, both of which are active members of GCE and home to businesses that provide energy efficiency services.

The tour concludes with a visit to examples of some of the efficiency and alternative fuels’ work that’s been done in Rifle, ending at the Rifle Library at 11:45 a.m. for lunch and a roundtable discussion with business owners, civic leaders, and Garfield Clean Energy board members.

Steve’s Guitars: A Carbondale institution on Fourth Street

By Olivia Pevec On a show night at Steve’s Guitars, a group of friends who gathered on the sidewalk walks in the door on the corner of the Fourth Street alley. They drop their money into a bucket where the evening’s price is posted. When the stage lights go up, the focal point is a bass drum hanging high in a corner with the words “Green but Growing” handpainted in a big nostalgic font.

“The Shop,” as it is affectionately called by proprietor Steve Standiford, has seen 750 consecutive weeks of music and about 1,500 shows. Perhaps these visitors are here to see a local singer-songwriter showcase or the band Let Them Roar. Maybe the performer will be a rising star like Hello Doll Face or a worldrenowned act like the Steep Canyon Rangers.

After 22 years, the roots of this homegrown concert hall are deep and the music is always fresh.

Standiford and his wife and “not-so-silent partner,” Mary Margaret O’Gara, moved to the Roaring Fork Valley in 1979 from Southern California. They wanted to start their family in a place “where we could make a positive impact, and see its development,” so they moved to Woody Creek. Steve worked with the Roaring Fork Energy Center, helping to start the Community Office for Resource Efficiency (CORE) and Colorado Mountain College’s solar energy program, which spawned Solar Energy International (SEI).

In 1980, Standiford bought two guitars from Wally’s Music on the second floor of the Dinkel Building — a ’62 Gibson Melody

Maker and a 60’s Harmony Sovereign — not knowing that the seeds of Steve’s Guitars were being planted.

On show night, when the band begins, the audience’s attention is palpable. Some sit on old movie theater seats, other prefer the cozy couches donated by Mateo Sandate. The front row offers extraordinary intimacy with the performers — on a full night, one’s knees brush the monitors. Every seat offers strong connections and an open exchange between performers and audience. As John Oates (of Hall and Oates) put it, “I love the spirit in the room itself. It brings me back to the purest form of live performance … no artifice … no fourth wall … just the artist and the audience, together for a single purpose, to celebrate the joy of music.”

Often the audience is moved to a moment of silence as a song ends and one can hear the forest of guitars ringing out together in sympathy with the last note.

On the right kind of night, the audience will pick up their chairs to clear a dance floor.

Sometimes a party will spill out into the street as it did for Diego’s Umbrella on a Saturday night during Mountain Fair.

The beginnings During Christmas 1993, Standiford asked O’Gara if she thought it might be a good idea to buy Wally’s Music, the shop where he bought those first guitars. With an atypical lack of discussion, she simply said “yes.”

The two soon opened Sopris Music with a celebratory 12 hours of live music. “We had

Standiford ran Sopris Music as a traditional music store until it moved to its current location and took its current name in 1998, but it has never been typical. Steve says, “When people ask if I ever sell any of the guitars I say, ‘reluctantly’”. Standiford has amassed a collection of more than 200 vintage guitars which, to an uneducated eye, offer a feast of shape and color. Those who

know guitars will spot some particular gems.

The guitars are Standiford’s retirement plan, but music is the life of the place.

Steve’s daughter, Shannon StandifordO’Gara, grew up in The Shop. She says she and her friends attended hundreds of shows, always confident that it was their club too.

under River opens season with a scary classic “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”

By Lee Reed Special to The Sopris Sun The first night of October found me at the edge of my seat in the front row at Thunder River Theatre Company’s (TRTC’s) season opener, “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” which continues October 7-9 and 13-15.

Corey Simpson, TRTC’s new executive artistic director, brings to life his bold vision for this extremely engaging play, thanks to great energy from his players and a simple but effective set, allowing for changing characters and locations to be portrayed with easy set changes. Personally, this is my favorite kind of theatre because the story itself must carry the show, and TRTC’s Jekyll and Hyde certainly didn’t disappoint.

The year is 1883 in the British Empire, when opium dens are becoming passé as the sex trade of young women flourishes, later leading to new laws protecting girls under age 16, as stated in the program notes written by Murray Johnson. Let’s just say it’s a creepy time to be living in London.

Upon entering the “black box” theatre, recently renamed for TRTC founder Lon Winston, I was struck by the stark simplicity of the set … or lack of a set … and the long, somewhat narrow stage area’s proximity to the audience (reminding me a bit of a fashion runway). That stage area is capped at each end with fractured white walls containing one door each.

A crime The show opens with several people having witnessed a crime and each character speaking his or her point of view.

It is a brief and intense moment that portends the play’s

troubled mood and propels the audience into the story. I probably shouldn’t admit this, but it was fun, yes fun, to be a voyeur to the dark side of human nature and behavior as the play unfolds. At times, I even found myself laughing out loud. That doesn’t mean this isn’t a serious play, delivered adeptly by seasoned actors. The characters they portray certainly aren’t laughing.

Most of the actors play several parts, which I found a tad confusing at times, but within a few scenes I caught up to what was happening due to the skillful way the actors shift characterization and some clear costuming cues.

This entertaining, fast-moving adaptation from the Robert Louis Stevenson novella by playwright Jeffrey Hatcher focuses on the story of Dr. Jekyll’s struggles with himself and how they manifest in the world around him.

Jekyll is portrayed by Franz Alderfer in his TRTC debut, and he plays the part with style, grace and intelligence, bringing this bright, mostly likeable character to light. We see him challenge the pompous Sir Danvers Carew, played

by Owen O’Farrell, who returns to the TRTC stage to bring his strong, steady presence to this and other roles in the play. Lucky us that Gerald DeLisser also returns to the TRTC stage. DeLisser’s performance is always bold as he deftly transforms throughout the play into several characters. His Hyde is unforgettable.

Moral questions The play also raises compelling moral questions. For example, during a stylized murder scene a witness from above states, “The good in me wanted to call out (for help) but the bad in me wanted to watch.” And isn’t that the unsavory human truth and why there are so many reality TV shows? In another scene we see a murder victim on an exam table being discussed by medical colleagues in a way that made me feel almost complicit in the prostitute’s mostly unnecessary exam.

Cassidy Willey, playing Elizabeth Jelkes and The Girl, also returns to the TRTC stage, and we’re glad for it. She navigates a difficult scene with Jekyll where both actors bring emotional range and show how the underbelly of human behavior affects them, one struggling with it (Jekyll) and one imposed on by it (Elizabeth Jelkes). Her passionate scene with DeLisser is brief but convincing as well. Jennifer Schiller stands out as Poole (also at times playing Hyde and two other minor roles). Nathan Cox returns to TRTC and smartly acts as both Edward Hyde and Gabriel Utterson, an associate of Jekyll.

TRTC delivers another memorable, expertly executed production with its 2016-2017 season opener. We are beyond lucky to have such a gem in our valley! “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” will get you in the spooky mood—for Halloween and the darkening season ahead. Don’t miss it!

The vision How can a guitar shop that doesn’t sell guitars stay open?

How can one run a music venue that doesn’t include a doorman or a bar?

While Standiford’s vision — a listening room that is about the music, not alcohol sales, a place that is for people of all ages and walks of life — has attracted a devoted community of supporters, it is not without its challenges.

The first time Standiford and O’Gara contemplated closing their doors, a band called Friends of Your Mother stepped up to be “the house band,” playing regularly without payment — playing out of love for the place and its people.

Since then, most local bands and many visitors have done the same. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Oates has played at least six benefits. Harley Stumbaugh helped upgrade the sound gear, and GrassRoots TV has loaned a full video rig. With so many folks giving, Standiford has earned the community’s trust.

That trust is generally, but not always, rewarded. O’Gara and Lark “Monk” Allen, who plays the roles of key holder and sometimes “door Nazi,” are sometimes irritated by folks who don’t put the door fee into the jar. They have even had to deal with people who actually helped themselves from the jar!

But the jar remains. The rent continues to get paid. The BYO policy remains in place and the Standiford-O’Gara family continue to feel that it’s worthwhile to carry on. “Do I wish I had the dollars it has taken to keep Steve’s open?”

O’Gara asks, “not really.”

When the house lights come up at the night’s end, the audience mingles with the musicians, often eating cookies O’Gara has made. Making one’s way past the remains of what was once Louis Hayes’ luthier shop to “the back room,” a visitor will discover its walls lined with posters of past shows and an extraordinary array of musical knick-knackery.

It’s a kind of musical shrine, and it’s what becomes of one man’s dream when it is combined with the love and contributions of a broad community of musicians and music lovers.

As artist and fan, Alleghany Meadows observed of Standiford, “His humility, dedication and vision are forces which make our world a better place to live.”

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that the Carbondale Board of Trustees will conduct a public hearing to consider an application submitted by Cerise Park, LLC (“Applicant”) for a Major Site Plan Review and Preliminary and Final Subdivision (U.D.C. Sec. 2.5.3., 2.6.4 & 2.6.5), of the property legally described as Parcel 2, THOMPSON PARK SUBDIVISION according to the MASTER PLAT thereof filed May 19, 2015, as Reception No. 862909, Garfield County, Colorado, consisting of approximately 2.20 acres (“Property”).

Applicant is the owner of the Property. Applicant proposes to subdivide the Property into 16 lots and to construct four townhome buildings on said lots consisting of a total of 16 units among the four buildings. Three of the 16 lots will be deed-restricted for affordable housing.
