A

Las Vegas odds maker is reportedly picking Spudman to defeat Batman in Saturday’s epic Potato Day showdown.

(See page 5). Tom “The Genius” Sapiro tells The Sopris Sun he has been researching the strengths and weaknesses of each superhero, and has determined our hometown guy will send Gotham City’s boy packing.

“The thing with Spudman, and really with all potatoes,” says Sapiro, “is he’s got eyes all over the place. In back of his head … every place. So, he’s got remarkable peripheral vision. There’s no way Batman can get the jump on him, and his cape could actually turn out to be a liability.”

Sapiro has also discovered another advantage for Spudman that probably no other potato possesses. “You know that potatoes are very starchy. We’ll, due to a genetic defect in Spudman, his starch is all concentrated right below his skin. It’s more than a half-inch thick, like a superstarched shirt. So, Batman or anyone else can pound on Spudman until their knuckles bleed, but it still won’t hurt him.”

And how can Spudman inflict damage upon Batman? Sapiro has learned the same genetic defect that affects his starch, also gives him extremely springy legs. “He can jump 8 or 10 feet straight up, which is within easy reach of Batman’s chin and lower extremities,” Sapiro observed.

As for Batman’s most famous asset, the Batmobile, Sapiro says it shouldn’t play much of a factor, “ … except for whisking Batman out of town real fast.”

Past presidential elections have also been messy

By Allen Best/Writers on the Range As we stagger through this year’s uninspiring presidential campaign, it might help to look back at the election of 1856, when, for the first time, the West yielded a presidential candidate. His name was John Charles Frémont, and he was a big name in his day. He still is: From Colorado to California, we have rivers and mountains named Fremont as well as towns, counties, parks and streets.

Besides being famous, he was daring, and not unlike today’s presidential candidates, deeply flawed.

Frémont led four expeditions to the West in the 1840s. He had married well, partnering with Jessie Benton, the daughter of Missouri Sen. Thomas Hart Benton, who ballyhooed westward expansion. Boosted by his father-in-law’s influence, Frémont in 1842 launched his first expedition with mountain man Kit Carson as a guide. It was a partnership based on ambition: Carson needed Frémont to make him famous, a favor he returned by keeping the tenderfoot mostly out of trouble as they explored the region.

In a 2001 book called “A Newer World,” the superb mountaineering author Michael Roberts chronicled the lives of the two men, principally through the lens of these expeditions. Roberts says he admires Kit Carson, but his praise for Frémont is more reserved.

You understand why after you’ve read Roberts’ account of a climb in what is now Wyoming — a mountain that Frémont thought was the highest peak in the Wind River Range. Frémont refused to share the glory of that first ascent with Carson; instead, he permitted a lesser light of the expedition, Charles Preuss, to accompany him to the top.

“I have no use for prisoners,” Frémont said, according to firsthand accounts. “Do your duty.” Carson, who had recently wed his beloved Josefa Jaramillo, a Mexican resident of Taos, followed orders and shot the three Mexicans. Later, in the 1856 presidential election, the executions became an issue. Frémont, according to Roberts’ account, disavowed any part in the killings.

The worst was yet to come. Frémont’s father-in-law had in mind a railroad that would cross the West on the 38th parallel. So Frémont set out in the winter of 1848 to scout the route. His timing could not have been worse. The route was bewildering — across the steepest, most rugged ranges in the Rocky Mountains, now in today’s Colorado. After crossing the Sangre de Cristos, Frémont and his men then faced the huge San Juans. They literally got in over their heads in snow.

Frémont and Carson And yet he and Carson crossed the continent together repeatedly. A pivotal year was 1846. U.S. troops were dispatched to defeat Mexico and, in the process, secure the Southwest for the expanding American empire. Ulysses Grant, then a lieutenant serving in the Mexican-American War, described that conflict late in his life as “one of the most unjust ever waged by a stronger against a weaker nation.”

But while Grant dodged bullets in Mexico, Frémont defied orders and lingered in California. Finally, at Los Angeles, he got in on the conquest. The Mexicans had no wall to protect them against Northern invaders. There’s a shameful asterisk in the tale of Frémont’s bold ambitions for American’s manifest destiny. The Americans seized three Mexicans near San Francisco Bay. None of them were fighters; they just happened to live there. Kit Carson inquired

“Idiot” Reading Roberts’ book, the word “idiot” comes to mind. Why didn’t Frémont’s men mutiny instead of traveling ever deeper into the range, which climbs above 12,000 feet? When Frémont finally turned back, his men were left to crawl, snowblind and starving, driven first to eat mules and then each other. Ten of them died. But once again, Frémont ducked responsibility. He blamed his guide, the fur trapper “Old” Bill Williams. Unlike Harry Truman, the buck never stopped with Frémont.

Yet Frémont, by then living in San Francisco, became the Republican Party’s first presidential candidate. He faced a former president, Millard Fillmore of the Know Nothings, a party that opposed the immigration of people like my relatives, Germans dodging the draft in Prussia who came to America to clear forests in Illinois, and Catholics, of any origin. The eventual winner of the presidency was James Buchanan, who favored expanding slavery into the West. Frémont of the checkered past condemned the expansion of slavery, and because of that principled stand, lost the election.

Frémont was an egotist, and he was reckless with other people’s lives. But here’s what’s perplexes me: From my safe perch 160 years later, I think I might have voted for the despicable scoundrel. If you see parallels to this year’s election, here’s something to keep in mind.

Four years later, we got Abraham Lincoln.

Libraries look at budget cuts Sopris Sun Staff Report Faced with an expected $1.2 million drop in property tax collections, the Garfield County library district’s board of directors will look at its 2017 budget and cost cutting measures at its monthly meeting in Rifle on Oct. 6.

After that, the board will present its proposed 2017 budget to the Garfield County commissioners for final approval on Oct. 10. A draft version of the library district’s 2017 budget was not posted on the district’s website (gcpld.org) as of press time.

Funding for Garfield County’s six branch libraries comes from property taxes and sales taxes. The district is taking a property tax hit, due to decreased oil and gas activity in western Garfield County.

So far during library budget discussions, the board has discussed closing libraries on certain days, cutting hours of operation, closing during an entire week sometime during the year, and potential staff reductions, according to published accounts.

Best of Show Carbondale folks, and perhaps those beyond, chose Andrew Arvanetes’ sculpture “Home Spun” as Best of Show for the 2016-2017 Art aRound Town exhibit, organized by the Carbondale Public Arts Commission (CPAC). “Home Spun,” located at Seventh and Main Street, is a narrative that suggests a personal dilemma, according to a press release. The sculpture’s overall shape is of a rocket, moving up (and forward), leaving the past behind. The three houses represent important choices that must be made. The fins, angled to resemble a spinning tornado, suggest chaos and confusion. “I’m very happy to exhibit my work in such beautiful surroundings,” said Arvanetes, of Dekalb, Illinois. “To all those involved in the exhibition and to the people of Carbondale, I thank you for this very positive experience.”

Town preps for Leaf Days Sopris Sun Staff Report The town has started preparing for Leaf Days, and large dumpsters will be delivered to the parking lot east of town hall the week of Sept. 26-30, according to a weekly memo from Renae Gustine to staff, trustees and others.

In other news from the memo: At the Sept. 22, P&Z meeting, the advisory group recommended approval of the Crystal Village PUD zone text amendment to the Commercial OfďŹ ce zone district. This area includes Lines Plaza and Lines Plaza II as well as the vacant lot behind Ace Hardware. The amendment will allow residential units on the ground oor. This will come before the board of trustees for consideration in late October or early November. At the same recent meeting, P&Z also approved the special review request to allow ground oor residential units at the Dolores Lofts in Building B at the Kay PUD. Building B has not yet been constructed. The approval is contingent on approval of a revised affordable housing plan by the board of trustees at a future meeting.

The ďŹ nal push for construction is starting to ease up some and the utilities staff is concentrating on maintenance of the plants and preparations for winter.

The Cooper Place development has installed its new line and will be testing it

for compliance. The town is working with the developer and neighbors on resolving ďŹ eld changes.

Power outages from the previous week caused problems with the telemetry system and brought forth the need for repairs to the wastewater plant generator. These have all been attended to and operational status is back to normal.

Collection line cleaning has continued this week and there have been no complaints.

Water demand has receded as fall weather moves in. The Nettle Creek plant has been running close to 1.0 MGD with Roaring Fork supplementing the supply with 0.02 MGD. The current schedule is to pull the #1 Crystal well pump and inventory casing next week.

Three staff members have successfully passed exams for certiďŹ cation in industrial wastewater, distribution, backow, and wastewater operations.

The street crew continued to hot patch and repair sections of asphalt trails this week.

The crew continued to work on the sidewalk inventory and preparing a list for additional repair projects. Curbs have been painted in various areas around town at the direction of the police department. Bids were opened for the street improvement work on Third Street this week. Staff and SGM are reviewing the unit costs to see

where the town can better align the project cost with the engineer’s estimate.

The mowing crew is still maintaining its summer routine. The town will ramp down those activities when cooler night and daytime temperatures slow turf growth.

Two new benches have been added to the Sopris Park playground. The town also hauled seven loads of topsoil to grade the edge of the new bicycle/pedestrian trails in Bonnie Fisher Park. The area was seeded and covered with erosion matting and irrigation heads were required to be moved along the new trails.

The town arborist gave out notices and talked with Eastbank Point and Indica Way homeowners about trimming and cutting down elm trees along Eastbank Point. The elm trees have become problematic and if they are allowed to continue to grow, their roots will start heaving curbs and asphalt.

The aphides’ infested linden tree in front of the Pour House was sprayed with Neem seed oil the week of Sept. 19-23. Hopefully the pests will go away.

Aspen Words launches prize The Aspen Institute announced on Sept.

28 the launch of the Aspen Words Literary Prize, an annual award recognizing an influential work of fiction that focuses on vital contemporary issues. Open to authors of any nationality, the $35,000 award is one of the largest literary prizes in the United States, and one of the few focused exclusively on fiction with a social impact, according to a press release. The inaugural award will be conferred for books published in English in the United States in 2017. Eligible works include novels or short story collections that address questions of

Carbondale’s Youth-14 soccer team recently travelled to Montrose for a match and stopped afterwards at Orchard Valley Farms outside Paonia for a picnic and picking.

Though they lost the game, 3-1, they brought home a great prize: four cases of peaches and apples, a dozen pints of blackberries, as well as locally crafted cheeses and candies from the orchard’s market. Mark your calendars: Taste of Basalt returns Sopris Sun Staff Report The Basalt Education Foundation (BEF) presents the 21st annual Taste of Basalt at the Roaring Fork Club from 6 to 11 p.m. on Nov. 5, according to a press release.

Considered by many the midvalley’s premier social event of the school year, the Taste of Basalt offers guests the chance to try foods from the area’s best restaurants; sample wine from around the world and cocktails from Woody Creek Distillers; dance to the tunes of DJ Dylan; bid on dozens of fabulous silent-auction items; and enter to win raffle prizes.

The event’s title sponsor for the fourth year in a row is Alpine Bank, which has pledged $10,000 to support the Taste of Basalt and BEF’s mission to enhance education at all three Basalt public schools.

Last year’s Taste of Basalt raised $100,000. Money distributed to all three schools included support for the following programs: • $24,000 Brand-new Makerspace at BES, • $24,000 Professional development and experiential education at BHS, • $23,000 Outdoor play equipment at BMS, • $5,000 Spring musical at BHS, • $2,800 BrainPop online education resources at BES, • $2,800 Library Badge Program and book funding at BMS, • $2,500 World Affairs Challenge at BHS, • $2,000 Greenhouse and garden at BMS, • $2,000 Junior Achievement at BES, Tickets to the Taste of Basalt tickets cost $100 per person; they are available online at www.basaltedu.org.

“Last year the Taste sold out a few days before the event, and we expect to sell out again this year,” said Basalt Education Foundation Board President Erika Leavitt. “We highly encourage the community to purchase tickets now to avoid being shut out at the door,” Leavitt said.

If tickets are still available the night of the event, they will be sold for $125 each. As the Taste of Basalt is for guests 21 and over, all ticketholders will need to bring identification to the event.

This year’s silent auction will take place online and onsite at the Taste of Basalt. The online portion of the auction will open Oct. 22 (www.biddingforgood.com/tasteofbasalt) and run through Nov. 4, while some items will “carry over” to the onsite silent auction.

“We are returning to our roots and reintroducing the ‘old-fashioned’ paper and pen bidding method, for those guests who like to know against whom they are bidding. It creates fun competition, ultimately raising even more money for Basalt public schools,” Leavitt continued.

Raffle prizes this year include a Sony 65-inch television, an iPad Air and $250 in cash.

Guests can purchase raffle tickets ($5 each or 5 for $20) from the front offices of the Basalt schools. They will also be available at the Taste of Basalt.

Emma lived in the Carbondale valley all of her 96 years. She belonged to many organizations and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge for 70 years. She never missed a Potato Day until the last two years of her life, due to health problems.

She was living at Heritage Care Center, where she received excellent care.

She is survived by her son, August (Donna) Natal; grandsons, Daniel (Cecillia), Robert (Gael); and great-grandchildren John Hessner, Tammara Natal, Talianna Natal, and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Rebekah Scholarship Fund at Alpine Bank would be appreciated.

Letters continued om page 2 Vote for Cortez Dear Editor: I am a triathlete, and over the years I have trained hundreds of miles from my workplace in Carbondale on the Crystal and Rio Grande trails. The majority of my training miles are traveled alone and after work due to my work schedule.

I am deeply disturbed hearing stories from women that have recently been attacked in Carbondale. More disturbing is the time it is taking mayor pro tem Dan Richardson and the board to act in regard to the safety of the town residents. I was looking forward to hearing an update on steps being taken now, in the interim of more permanent solutions, at the recent Board of Trustee meeting. It’s been nearly two months since these attacks. All I have heard so far is that I should not be out alone in the evening and I should take selfdefense classes!

When considering who will get my vote for mayor, it seems Richardson is more interested in facilitating and running meetings rather than leading the board. He seems like a nice enough guy but lacks experience and knowledge to propose solutions to a dangerous situation. I know he was a huge proponent of the tax initiatives in the last municipal election. He had plenty of ideas as to why it would be all right to impose new taxes. It also appears Trustee Byars is afraid to speak up in the meetings. If the meetings are being run so

well, why does she not speak up? If she can’t speak up at board meetings, how could she possibly be mayor?

What about Ed Cortez? I like that Cortez believes public safety is and should be a priority for the town. He has ideas for solutions (other than tax increases) and is not afraid to speak out when he sees a problem. I like that he knows Carbondale and has years of experience to lead the board and citizens alike. It’s time to elect a mayor that is accountable and knows how to get things done. I support Ed Cortez for Mayor of Carbondale.

Very concerned Dear Editor: As a hunter of some 60 years in Colorado, I am very concerned that Scott Tipton has co-sponsored four pieces of legislation to transfer or sell off Colorado’s 25 million acres of national forest, national parks and BLM lands.

Colorado receives some $34 billion from outdoor recreation each year and nearly $20 billion on the West Slope. Gail Schwartz was chair of the Colorado Senate Natural Resources Committee and understands the importance of our public lands.

She is the natural choice of the Third Congressional District.

Katrina Byars for mayor Dear Editor: I am voting for Katrina Byars for mayor of Carbondale. Katrina and Dan Richardson both bring different views of our community, and would have different styles.

Both are capable.

In terms of who represents Carbondale best, I think Katrina is the one. She has spent her entire adult life here, raised two kids and put them through the public schools. She has been involved with many of the community's efforts and organizations in a way that neither Dan nor Ed Cortez have.

Katrina has been a leader on Thompson Divide protection since the movement started (working with ranchers and a broad swath of the community), involved with organizing Mountain Fair for at least a decade and was an early employee and supporter of the Dandelion Market/Carbondale Food Co-op, which she now manages. The newfound energy and new customers at the Food Co-op is reflective of her standing in the community.

Katrina has served two years on the Board of Trustees, and has a more complete understanding of what is possible with Carbondale's budget and staff. She has been very cautious about tax increases and spending overall. She was the lone vote on the Board of Trustees against the carbon tax, for instance.

I also think Katrina represents women much better than Dan, who has stumbled on the question of safety by not acknowl-

edging the urgency of the situation when it was brought to the board by a dozen or more women.

Under Katrina’s leadership, there is a chance the trustees will return to the practices under Stacey Bernot, where it was quite easy for a citizen to get a matter discussed by the Board. Under Stacey's leadership, it took two trustees to put a matter on the agenda. That made it easy for a citizen to raise an issue and then have the trustee find another to support a discussion. Under Dan, at the prompting of Trustee Frosty Merriot, the threshold for discussion has been upped to three trustees, which is much harder.

Also, the current leadership seems more concerned about finishing on time than fully flushing out the issues. Katrina understands the need to let citizens talk through the issues the same way trustees need to.

Finally, Dan is an employee at SGM, the engineering firm that is under contract with the Town of Carbondale. I am not at all comfortable with this situation. Additionally, he and three other trustees are either in the business of building things or spent time on the Planning and Zoning Commission. There is a worrying orientation toward development that Katrina would bring pause toward.

We need a mayor who represents all of Carbondale, and Katrina is the best fit for the job.

The canine crowd has garnered a good deal of attention recently and they deserve it. Just think. What would life be without our best friends?

A few weeks ago the National Sheepdog Finals were held on Missouri Heights and this last weekend, Dogs on Course in North America held its Western U.S agility championships in North Face Park and the Bill Hanks baseball field. From mixed breeds to pure breds, they came in all sizes, shapes and colors. Many of the dogs that competed were rescues and several were from the Roaring Fork Valley. The Western U.S. championships will return in 2017.

Carbondale Arts: Launchpad sends up two new shows Sopris Sun Staff Report The Launchpad, a space for the visual/ performing arts, is often a space where creative minds intersect. On Oct. 9 from 6 to 8p.m., the Launchpad’s R2 Gallery will exhibit a mingling of artistic mediums with the opening receptions of “Alloy!” (a metal work exhibition) and “Feverish Migrations” (a printmaking and poetry exhibition).

Curated by Natasha Seedorf and Olivia Pevec, “ALLOY!” is an exploration of metals as material, according to a press release.

It is a conversation about art, craft and artifact, and an examination of what makes a thing an example of one or the other and where they cross.

The periodic table of elements shows 89 metals in the known universe. “They are in our blood and in our food,” said a Carbondale Arts spokeswoman. “We pry them from the earth, purify, process and mix them to meet a vast array of needs. From medicine, to warfare, and from infrastructure to fashion, metals are a part of every aspect of our lives.”

Featured artists include: Haley Bates, Mark Cesark, Matt Haugh, Alison Finn, Reina Katzenberger, Olivia Pevec, Natasha Seedorf and Ira Sherman. These artists were chosen to show the “malleability of metals” quite literally, through a spectrum of materials and methods.

Finn, Haugh, Seedorf, Sherman and Pevec all come from a blacksmithing background and can trace their involvement in the craft back to the late Francis Whitaker, a blacksmith who spent his last four decades in the Roaring Fork Valley and the last few years at Colorado Rocky Mountain School (CRMS). Finn was honored to finish Whitaker’s work and use his touch mark after he died; Haugh is now the master of Whitaker’s shop at CRMS. Cesark makes “paintings” from pieces

“Feverish Migrations” “Feverish Migrations” brings together poetry by Cameron Scott and engraved prints by past Anderson Ranch printmaking instructor Johanna Mueller.

Scott is a winner of the 2016 Blue Light book award for his recent work, “The Book of Cold Mountain,” a collection of poems illustrated by Mueller, who uses animals in her artwork to express her vulnerability, spirituality in conjunction with nature, and awe of the natural world.

The poet and engraver met in 2011 while Mueller was an artist in residence at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village. “After reading several of his poems, which so accurately expressed the feel of the Roaring Fork Valley, little phrases from them started to inform my artwork, which grew into entire poems that became artwork,” Mueller said. Scott invited Mueller to illustrate the cover for “The Book of Cold Mountain” (published

Crews from SGM and LLC Builders returned to the Crystal Mill above Marble, for what Matt Hutson said is their most ambitious maintenance project to date, at least during his tenure as one of the mill’s caretakers.

The work was scheduled the week of Sept. 19-23, and included: removing and replacing the front bottom log on the downstream side, and the front bottom two logs on the upstream side. “These logs had significant rotting and have been on my list of things to do for many years,” said Hutson, who is a project manager for SGM. The historic mill is one of the most photographed landmarks in Colorado, and is owned by the nearby Treasure Mountain Ranch, Inc. The so-called “Crystal Mill” was built in 1893 and was not a mill at all. It used a water turbine to drive an air compressor to power machinery and tools in nearby silver mines, according to websites. It fell into disuse in 1917 when the Sheep Mountain mine was closed. When the mill was in use, it was called the Sheep Mountain Power House at Lost Horse Millsite, or the Lost Horse Mill. The mill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 5, 1985.

Trustee Heather Henry: Recreation roots run deep

By Justin Patrick Sopris Sun Contributor It is not uncommon to fondly remember playing sports as a kid, but most people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t reďŹ&#x201A;ect back years later on a parks and recreation infrastructure that allowed them to participate in the ďŹ rst place.

Having become the University of Connecticutâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s starting goalkeeper in a national championship soccer match, as well as having served on the Carbondale Parks and Recreation Commission for four years, Henry has made the connection. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The recreation programs that I got to do as a kid are what set me on a path to play higher and higher level soccer,â&#x20AC;? she told The Sopris Sun. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I attribute so much to playing sports and being involved in group dynamics â&#x20AC;Ś . Those are the things that raise great citizens.â&#x20AC;?

Henry is the newest addition to the Carbondale Town Trustees, having been chosen to take the place of A.J. Hobbs, who recently stepped down. She plans to bring her experience with Parks and Recreation as well as the Planning and Zoning Commission, to take a pragmatic look at how Carbondaleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s infrastructure can best accommodate its active â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and growing â&#x20AC;&#x201D; population. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a whole new world for Carbondale,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Public service Henry has a long history of public service in the Roaring Fork Valley. She moved here in 2000 to work as a landscape architect for Design Workshop, where she worked for 10

But she couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t shake that warm feeling she got returning home. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve travelled to some beautiful places in the west,â&#x20AC;? she said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;but I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think of a single time where I landed in Aspen and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m so glad to be back in the valley.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

Zoning Commission. Henry was interested in both positions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Can I do both at the same time?â&#x20AC;? she asked town ofďŹ cials. They told her they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see why not.

Henry spent four years on each commission, where she learned the challenges and intricacies of the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inner workings. A lot changed in those few years, she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as much trafďŹ c â&#x20AC;Ś When you see how bustling we are now, you see how quiet those years really were.â&#x20AC;?

On Parks and Recreation, Henry helped write a new master plan that addresses improvements to the trail system and sidewalks, identiďŹ es gaps, and works on expanding programming in a ďŹ scally responsible way, as well as maintaining existing assets, such as playground equipment.

On Planning and Zoning, Henry was concerned with â&#x20AC;&#x153;how to create density while still holding on to community values.â&#x20AC;? She believes that the town should balance access and transportation issues with its unique character. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I see everything as interconnected,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how I see a lot of issues. Very few are siloed (sic).â&#x20AC;?

Henry said she is honored and excited to serve as Carbondaleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newest trustee, and brings a diverse skill set to the table. She believes that to be a good public ofďŹ cial â&#x20AC;&#x153;you have to suppress your egoâ&#x20AC;? and make the decisions with the best outcome for the most citizens. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I take extremely seriously the fact that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not there to make decisions based on my personal perspective. That is what representational government is all about.â&#x20AC;?

in Carbondale in 2006. They have a daughter. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We pretty much had to put everything on the line,â&#x20AC;? she said of her home purchase. But now that she has roots here, Henry intends to make the community a better place.

Henry began participating in local public life almost as soon as she arrived. Her employer, Design Workshop, encouraged community involvement, and she â&#x20AC;&#x153;seized on it right away.â&#x20AC;? She joined the Aspen Community Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Springboard, which encourages young people to make an impact in their communities. She helped found nonproďŹ t startups including Youth Zone and Battle of the Bands in Basalt. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a great way to get involved in the community and be with people that are a greater cross-section,â&#x20AC;? she said.

In 2002 she went through the Aspen Leadership program (now Roaring Fork Center for Community Leadership) and subsequently joined the board. She then accepted a position on the board of the Aspen Historical Society.

In 2010, Henry stepped down from the boards and Design Workshop to start her own landscape design company â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Connect One. Reflecting on a year as a Rotary Foreign Exchange student In Argentina (EDITOR’S NOTE: This article was written in mid-August).

By Megan Webber Special to The Sopris Sun When I was younger, I pondered being an exchange student. I had a wild desire to explore Western Europe, the UK and Ireland. I wanted to see the places my ancestors had come from decades and even centuries ago on old wooden ships. By the time my junior year of high school came around, I decided to make it less of a dream and more of a goal. So I applied to Rotary in October of 2014. In April of 2015, I was informed that I’d be spending my senior year in Argentina. My junior year of high school was a long, stressful one. Before leaving for Argentina, I applied early to Colorado Mesa University and was accepted, and I will be attending CMU this coming year.

I arrived in Argentina on Sept. 2, 2015 and left July 17, 2016. I got there at the end of winter and got to experience their celebration of spring at the beach, which was a party that basically lasted all weekend.

My city in Argentina is called Tres Ar-

royos (Three Little Rivers), and it is in the south of the Buenos Aires province, close to the beach. The entire Buenos Aires province is flat, flat, flat and green. My city has a population of about 25,000 people, a small town by their standards. The city has a strong population of Dutch and Danish descendants. There are Dutch and Danish flags hung around the city, Dutch and Danish schools, ice cream shops, etc.

I had five years of high school Spanish under my belt before I left, and, having done quite well in Spanish class, was feeling pretty confident about living in a Spanishspeaking country when I left. However, in Argentina, they speak much quicker and much more differently than how I learned to speak in school. It took me about four months to become fluent. Now that I’m back in Colorado, when I have conversations with native Spanish speakers, I speak differently than they do. I have come back with an Argentinian accent that other Latinos sometimes don’t even understand. In Argentina, “Me llamo Megan” is pronounced “Me shamo Megan.” “Tres Arroyos” is “Tres Arroshos.” And so forth.

They also use different words than in Mexico or Spain. In Mexico, a banana is “platano.” In Argentina, it is “banana.”

Host families I lived with four host families. I was with the first family for about five months all together (I did some travelling in between). I don’t have a favorite host family; they were all amazing and so supportive and treated

me just like another daughter. My first host family was my host mother, Silvia Pailhe, a science teacher and writer; my 20-year-old brother Lucho Cortese, who is in college in EXCHANGE page 19

Exchange om page 18 Buenos Aires, studying to be a radio reporter; and my 17-year-old sister Lucia Cortese, an artist who is living in Pagosa Springs, Colorado now as a Rotary Exchange Student. She came to visit me during Mountain Fair, so if you saw me at the fair, you probably met her.

My last host family was my mother, Celina Fernandez Destain, an interior decorator and painter; my 20-year-old sister Sara Fernandez, who is studying astronomy in La Plata; and my 18-year-old brother Martin Fernandez, who returned in February from his exchange in France.

School School is extremely different in Argentina than in the U.S. After kindergarten, you go to six years of primary school and six years of secondary school. In secondary school, you pick a “division” or a “major.” Some of the majors you can pick are: economics, natural sciences, social sciences, and visual arts. When I first arrived, I went to the public school from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with my host sister, Lucia, who was at the time in fifth year visual arts. In Argentina, the students stay in one classroom all day with the same classmates and the teachers come to them, moving between classrooms and schools.

School ended in November for summer break, and I spent most of the time travelling to Buenos Aires, Necochea, Olavarria and the north of Argentina. After summer

break, which ended in March, Lucia moved here to Colorado, and I continued on to sixth year with her class. I often felt bored in class, and I didn’t really like the way the school was run, so in June, my Rotary counselor suggested that I switch to the private Dutch school where she teaches English. It was a smaller, calmer, natural sciences class in a smaller, nicer, cleaner school. I had more friends and the teachers gave me more work to do so I wasn’t bored, and unlike the public school, the teachers never cut class.

Favorite part One of my favorite parts of the whole year was the Rotary bus tour to the north. I travelled with 49 other exchange students from all over the world. We went from Buenos Aires to Iguazu Falls, Jujuy, Salta, Tucuman, Cafayate and Cordoba. Iguazu was one of the hottest and definitely the sweatiest day of my life. We hiked around the park and went on a boat underneath the waterfalls. We stood at the Triple Front border with Brazil and Paraguay, and took pictures of the rivers and neighboring countries.

We went horseback riding in Salta, tasted wine ice cream in Cafayate, hiked in the desert and ate llama in jujuy, and soaked in the hot springs in Fiamala.

Now that I’m back home, I can say that I’m very grateful that I had the opportunity to go to Argentina, and that I wouldn’t trade my year there for anything. I owe so much to everyone I met. They were kinder to me than
