I just got off the phone with folks who make me feel that joy. They are the food service director of a local school district, the leader of the parent-teacher group at an elementary school and an educator. They are all part of a pilot project of the Roaring Fork Food Policy Council to get more local food into our schools. Right now, kids at Crystal River Elementary, Basalt Elementary, Sopris Elementary and Glenwood Springs Elementary schools are all eating apples in their school lunches from orchards only about 70 miles away. The nutrient density of these apples is greater when they are eaten closer to when they are picked and they are organically grown, which makes them free of the multiple health risks from toxic pesticides heavily used on conventionally grown apples.

It is the goal of the RFFPC to get as much local food as possible into our schools and to other consumers in our area. No matter what challenges we face due to climate crises affecting our vulnerable global food system, the more farmers we have growing healthy food on our local lands, the healthier and more secure we will be. We will be more engaged with our land, understand what it needs from us and feel a more immediate sense of gratitude for the nourishment it affords us.

Harvest Fest a cornucopia of farming/ranching ideas

By Patrick Hunter The word “harvest” has been putting a smile on people’s faces since the beginning of agriculture and civilization. The occasion of the harvest means we shall eat, and we shall eat especially well.

As a bonus, harvest comes at a time of the year as summer ends and brings us the cooler nights and the beautiful fall colors.

This past weekend the Sustainable Settings’ Harvest Festival south of Carbondale epitomized this tradition of life. Since 1997, Brook and Rose Le Van have been building the ranch that has become a livelihood, and much, much more. Along with the organization Slow

Money, and its founder Woody Tasch, they brought together some of the real luminaries in the field of organic farming. True to one of their most cherished goals of education, Sunday morning was a veritable feast of ideas.

For most folks, the closest they might come to an actual farm may be a Farmer’s Market. While no farmer myself, I have at least picked beans and apples for money. (Not much money, as I recall). But as the world’s population becomes increasingly urban, and the majority of food production becomes more and more mechanized, there is even less connection to source of the foods we

eat. At the same time, there are many in American and across the world that are dedicated to reversing the trend of industrial agriculture by growing their own food and even moving back to farms and ranches.

We have learned that giant farms consisting of thousands of acres of mono-crops like corn or wheat, or with feedlots for cattle, are actually in a battle against nature. Modern industrial agriculture is destructive of the soil, destructive of the natural habitats of our wildlife, uses vast quantities of harmful chemicals, is highly reliant on fossil fuels, and is horribly abusive of animals. New TRUU minister also an ordained Zen priest

By Barbara Dills Sopris Sun Correspondent Florence Caplow, the new minister for the Two Rivers Unitarian Universalist (TRUU) fellowship that meets weekly in Carbondale, arrived Aug. 7 more or less sight unseen. That is, she had never been to the Roaring Fork Valley before and had only met with members of TRUU’s search committee and congregation via phone, Skype, and e-mail prior to her arrival. It’s not the first time Caplow, a field biologist for much of her adult life, had landed in a new place knowing very little about it. “I’m used to just showing up somewhere and finding my feet. And I love that actually,” she told The Sopris Sun. Caplow grew up 75 miles southwest of Indianapolis in the town of Terre Haute and attended college at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, where she studied botany and ecology and received her B.A. degree in 1987. Her work as a field biologist focused on identifying and protecting rare plant populations throughout the West, including species new to science. For this move to Colorado, she uprooted from Port Townsend on the Washington coast, which had been her home for the last year. Despite her years in the Pacific Northwest, she’s no stranger to the drier landscapes of the Southwest, having conducted research in the Mojave Desert and the Intermountain West in the past.

An active outdoorswoman, Caplow is enjoying settling into her life here in the mountains and all that the valley has to offer, including the breadth of cultural offerings.

“The first 10 days, my mind was blown. One day I got taken to Avalanche Creek and Penny Hot Springs. And the next day, I was at a rehearsal [at the Aspen Music Festival] with Joshua Bell.” She says she was encouraged to come here by many people she spoke with in UU circles who repeatedly characterized TRUU as one of “the sweetest, most creative congregations” they had encountered anywhere. Her arrival marks a milestone for TRUU as she is the first of the congregation’s ministers to live in the valley full time.

TRUU meets weekly at the Third Street Center. Sunday services are held at 10 a.m. in the Calaway Room and include a special program for youth and children. Caplow will speak on the topic “Everything is Holy Now” this Sunday, Sept. 27.

Trustees OK 50 percent pay hike for future boards

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer After getting mixed reviews from members of the public, the Carbondale Board of Trustees voted 4-1 to approve a 50-percent pay hike for future trustees on Tuesday — though the raise will not apply to anyone on the board until the next municipal election, in April 2016.

Trustees, who currently are paid $600 per month, would earn $900 a month, and the mayor’s paycheck would increase from the current $1,000 a month to $1,500 per month.

Trustee Pam Zentmyer, whose term expires next year and who cannot run for reelection due to term limits, was the only trustee who voted against the pay raise (Trustee A.J. Hobbs and Mayor Stacey Bernot were absent).

“I can’t get on board with this,” Zentmyer told her fellow trustees. “I just can’t get past the fact that we are the only board (in town government) that does get paid.”

She said she feels the trustee position is “a volunteer position” performed by people who care about their community and want to give back to that community, and that realistically the trustees cannot be paid enough to compensate for the time they put in and the stress they experience from the job.

Consequently, she said, the $30,000 or so that this pay raise will cost the town should be “put to some better use.”

Others on the board, though, felt the raise is warranted, partly because it has been 15 years since the last time the board made such a decision, and partly because the job of being a trustee has gotten vastly more com-

plex and time consuming.

“It is at times a very hefty commitment,” said Trustee Allyn Harvey (acting as mayor pro-tem in the absence of mayor Bernot).

“There’ve been some 20-plus hour weeks” that he said cut into his ability to earn a living at his day job as a media consultant.

“I don’t think $900 a month is really a huge amount of money,” Harvey continued, especially given the 15-year gap between raises.

“It is a public service,” he conceded, regarding Zentmyer’s point. “But you also want to attract people (to run for election to the board) that might, you know, say, ‘OK, I can do that. I can fit that into my finances.’

And I want it to be diverse. I think this is an amazingly diverse group here (meaning the current board’s makeup.)”

Members of the public, who were invited to comment on the pay hike proposal, were anything but uniform in their views.

Tom Adgate, a local resident who is working to garner public support for a tax hike to increase the revenues of the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District, said that when he read in a news story that Harvey had proposed the pay hike, “I thought, ‘That’s the height of hypocrisy,’” given Harvey’s public opposition to the fire district tax increase.

“He wants more money for politicians, but not for men and women who are crawling around on the ground (fighting fires), to try to keep us safe,” Adgate declared.

Adgate’s condemnation of Harvey’s position, however, met with resistance from Trustee Frosty Merriott, who said Harvey’s opposition was not about pay for fire fight-

ers, but was about what Harvey perceives as an unwarranted hurry to get the tax measure passed.

“He just wanted to move a little slower with it,” Merriott said in Harvey’s defense.

Wayne Horak, a local resident who in 2014 ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the board of trustees, also opposed the pay raise, telling the trustees, “I’m fearful that we will have more regulation the more you get paid.”

As an example, Horak pointed to the trustees’ ongoing revisions to regulations governing the legal cannabis trade in town, which he indicated left business owners dealing with ever-changing restrictions.

He also maintained that endless debates over development proposals drove the Kroger grocery chain, which owns the local City Market store, to at one point consider TOWN COUNCIL page 18

Dogs and spuds hit town this weekend Sopris Sun Staff Report Starting on Sept. 24 and running through Sept 27 will be the Dogs On Course in North America Championship Finals at North Face Bike Park, according to town manager Jay Harrington’s weekly memo. The event will feature more than 100 dogs and their handlers, competing in a timed, dog-agility obstacle course at the baseball ďŹ eld. Spectator bleachers will be set up for the viewing public. A concessionaire is scheduled to be on hand selling food and drinks.

Also this weekend, Harrington reminded staff and others that Carbondale’s oldest civic event, the annual Potato Day celebration and parade, is this Saturday, Sept 26, starting at 10:30 a.m.

The featured activities will include a community barbecue following the parade, from roughly 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Bareback Bonanza Rodeo from 3-5 p.m. at the Gus Darien Riding and Rodeo Arena on Catherine Store Road east of town.

On the law enforcement side of things, the Carbondale Police Department will take part in Prescription Take Back Day on Sept. 26, a nationwide initiative of the Drug Enforcement Administration that calls on law enforcement to accept prescription medications that are either unwanted, unneeded or expired, with no questions asked. The medicines can be turned in to the PD between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the town’s Environmental Board was planning to distribute yers around town this week to advertise the program.

Recreation programming continues at the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center next to Town Hall, on Colorado Avenue. The programming for last week included Motion Mondays Pre-School, Youth Flag Football, bike lessons at North Face Bike Park, lessons on the climbing wall, and much more. At the town-owned Gateway RV Park, the occupancy rate for the week of Sept. 12-18 came in at 74 percent, ďŹ lling 98 of the available 133 total number of spots for that period. As of Friday, Sept. 18, reservations for the current week (Sept. 19-25) stood at 33 sites.

The town’s parks and recreation crew was kept busy last week, mowing grass, emptying trash and dog pots, weed whacking fence lines, mowing soccer ďŹ elds and the North Face Bike Park, winterizing the bathrooms at the John Fleet Municipal Pool and more.

The streets crew, Harrington reported, worked on sign maintenance, installation of new signs, street cleaning and a utility excavation on Highway 133.

The Planning & Zoning Commission, Carbondale’s hardworking group of volunteer planners, submitted its comments to the planning staff regarding the under-construction UniďŹ ed Development Code Module #3 (development standards and subdivision regulations), and the comments have been sent to the contractor working on the code, Clarion Associates. Clarion is scheduled to submit the public draft of Module #3 to the town in mid-October, for comment by town boards and commissions, and the draft will be posted on the town’s website. A public meeting on Module #3 is scheduled before the P&Z on Oct. 29 at Town Hall.

FRIDAY, Sept. 11: At 8:47 a.m. police took a report about ďŹ ve vehicles on GarďŹ eld Avenue that appeared to have been shot with BB guns. The case is under investigation.

Police reported it might have been by either a BB gun or a rock.

FRIDAY, Sept. 11: At 7:51 p.m. police stopped a vehicle for speeding, and subsequently issued warnings to several juveniles in the vehicle for being minors in possession of alcohol.

SUNDAY, Sept. 13: At 2:43 p.m. police got a report of a “suspicious event� that reported had taken place on North 10th Street, possibly a male selling prescription medications.

Police contacted the man, found him with a credit card belonging to the reporting party’s daughter, but determined that he had permission to use the card.

TUESDAY, Sept. 15: At 9:51 p.m. police were told that a local man and his son had gone to City Market in Carbondale but had left the 10-year-old's bike in the store’s bike rack. On returning, they found the bike — a grey Dart with a yellow chain guard and blue-rimmed wheels — had been stolen.

Great news on the spud front

that the Carbondale Clay Center can continue to keep class costs low in order to stay accessible to community members,” said a clay center spokeswoman. “This grant signifies that the Carbondale Clay Center provides a high-level of quality in its programs, community service and administrative ability. The Carbondale Clay Center provides classes year round, for approximately 300 students of all ages and abilities.”

The Red McClure potato put Carbondale on the agriculture map after local farmer Eugene Grubb introduced it to the market in the early part of the 20th century. The Red McClure eventually fell out favor (not to be confused with “flavor”) and was replaced by other varieties in the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond. Local Slow Food folks got a boost in about 2011, however, when the potato was reintroduced and made available to growers. Carbondale gardeners went to planting this heirloom variety for a year or two, but for reasons not understood by The Sopris Sun’s assistant farming editor, by 2013 it was almost impossible to find them. But not this year! Tony Lissolo, from Rifle, is bringing in a load of several kinds of potatoes, including some Red McClures to Potato Day. The Sopris Sun does not know what Tony looks like, what his booth will look like or much of anything else on this matter, but speculates if you want some coveted Red McClures you’d better get there early.

Speaking of which Creative District stakeholders are expected to unveil their strategic plan on Oct. 22, according to an e-mail from CCAH Director Amy Kimberly. Working through CCAH, the town is halfway through a two-year process it hopes will lead to official Creative District certification from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. More than 250 businesses, non-profits, individuals and others are part of the Creative District’s inventory. The idea behind the Creative District effort, Kimberly has explained in published reports, is to provide a framework for businesses, artists and others to combine their efforts to bring people to town for all manner of activities.

Dump your prescription drugs As part of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration’s “National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day,” the Carbondale Police Department (511 Colorado Ave.) is accepting unused or expired prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 26.

Sheepdogs returning Word from up at Strang Ranch says the National Sheepdog Finals will return to Missouri Heights in September 2016. The Strang Ranch has hosted the finals twice in the past few years, attracting more than 100 sheepdogs and their handlers from across the U.S.

Cat control committee not purring along so well

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer A group of Carbondale residents and officials apparently are having difficulties over a proposed new ordinance intended to keep cats from killing birds by treating felines like dogs in the eyes of the law.

The committee, created by the town board of trustees on Sept. 8, is charged with figuring out how Carbondale should deal with what some say is a local cat population that is killing an unacceptable number of birds.

But others maintain that the cats are not to blame, and that it is human activities that are responsible for whatever declines may be observed in the region’s bird population, not just locally but regionally and nationally.

The committee has had one meeting, on Sept. 17, and a second meeting iss planned for Sept. 24.

The committee is made up of two town trustees — Allyn Harvey and Frosty Merriott — as well as Police Chief Gene Schilling (chairman), police officer Gretchen Bell (whose duties include animal control), and local citizens Randy Brimm, Mary Harris, Dee Malone, Nancy Petersen and Cindy Sadlowski.

It was Harris, who is president of the Roaring Fork chapter of the National Audubon Society, that first raised the proposed ordinance in July, citing studies claiming that billions of birds are killed by cats nationally, although no local statistics exist to show how the situation stands regionally.

In response to Harris’ plea, the Carbondale Board of Trustees had a proposed ordinance drawn up that requires that cats be kept on their owner’s property or put on leash any time they leave that property; that owners be required to license their cats as well as spay or neuter them, and that any cats found away from their homes would be considered to be “running at large” and impounded.

Sadlowski, a local real estate broker who for 15 years has voluntarily run an organization called the Street Cats Coalition aimed at trapping, neutering and releasing “feral” cats that live on their own, has led the charge against the ordinance.

“They’re trying to solve a problem that doesn’t exist,” she has said, arguing that there are not very many cats that run loose around town and kill birds.

She added that the feral cats trapped by her organization are fed by a network of volunteers and “spend a lot of their time sleeping,” and typically spend their waking time chasing and catching rodents, not birds.

Sadlowski maintained that the proponents of the ordinance of relying on “junk science” to make the case against cats, a point backed up by the national Alley Cat Alliance (ACA).

Cindy Sadlowski cat advocate Faced with two sides that adamantly stuck by their arguments, the BOT opted to appoint the committee rather than simply approve the ordinance.

But according to some of those taking part in the committee discussions, it has not been going smoothly.

The two sides “haven’t found common ground at this point” wrote Schilling in an email to The Sopris Sun, sent on Sept. 21.

Trustee Harvey, after noting that the numerical makeup of the committee seems rather evenly split between the opposing factions, said the two sides have yet to show themselves to be open to the arguments by the other side.

“I would encourage people on both sides (to) listen and try to empathize with the

points made by the other side,” Harvey said.

When asked if that had happened at the first meeting, he waited a moment before responding, “No, it did not.”

Sadlowski agreed, saying of her opponents, “They just want to ram through this ordinance” and are not open to opposing viewpoints.

“The committee,” she said, “we’re on opposite ends of everything … the two sides will never meet.”

Sadlowski added that she is hopeful that the town will simply abandon the ordinance proposal and “do nothing. Leave the (existing nuisance-cat) ordinance in place, and leave us alone,” meaning allow her group to continue its work with the feral cats.

Harris, however, wrote in an e-mail that at the first meeting “we only had an hour” and that the committee “spent most of the hour in a fairly friendly debate.”

Concerning the idea of a recommendation based on an agreement from the two sides, Harris noted, “We have continued debatetype dialog all week through e-mails, but have not spoken (beyond what was said at the first meeting). And it was never determined that we were going to work on any agreements until the meeting.”

At this week’s meeting, she said, “we all hope to sit down to work,” and that the result may be a rewriting of the town’s existing nuisance-cat ordinance, rather than a push for adoption of the proposed new law.

“All we need to do is update it and clarify it,” she said of the existing ordinance.

MSHS counting on grants for î‚Šompson House museum

The Mt. Sopris Historical Society, which recently celebrated the signing of its lease for the historic Thompson House museum just off Highway 133 at the south end of town, is hoping to receive grant money to fund some repairs and maintenance to the old structure.

The Thompson House museum, which had been open to the public for three years and is one of three historic properties being managed by the society, has been closed for months but is expected to reopen for public tours next summer, starting with a grand opening celebration at a date to be announced, according to a message on the society’s website (www.mtsoprishistoricalsociety.org).

In the meantime, according to Carbondale native Lew Ron Thompson (yes, he is part of the family that formerly owned the Thompson House), there has not been a lot of work done on the old structure so far. “Nothing has changed yet,� he said of the house, which is surrounded by the construction zone for the installation of utilities to serve a new Thompson Park subdivision and the new Ross Montessori School.

But the society has recently applied for a $125,000 grant from the History Colorado State Historical Fund, which doles out money from the state’s lottery proceeds.

This is the second time the Carbondale society has applied for the grant, Thompson said. “We applied several years ago, but because of the ownership issue, they withheld it,â€? he continued, referring to the fact that until this year, the Thompson House was owned by developer Freida Wallison, who is building the Thompson Park project. “But we’re pretty conďŹ dent this time aroundâ€? that the grant will be awarded, Thompson said, in part because the Town of Carbondale, which owns the museum building, is supporting the grant application, and has agreed to match some of the grant money from a local $75,000 fund established by Walli-

He said the application deadline is Oct. 1, and the grant itself likely will not be awarded until January. “So, we’ll have it for the spring,� he predicted.

The money, Thompson said, is to be used for a variety of repairs, including: • shoring up the south foundation wall of the house, which is sagging; • “repointâ€? the bricks and mortar that make up the exterior of the house; • reinforce the roof; • conduct bat mitigation work in the attic and elsewhere in the old house; • install a modern, glycol/radiator furnace and heating system, to replace the old coal-ďŹ red furnace, which featured a hopper that had to be ďŹ lled by manual labor with a shovel and would provide heat for only 14 hours before it needed attention; • repair some of the window frames.

Not much else is currently planned for the exterior of the building, which dates back to the 1880s and was built for pioneering local ranchers Oscar Holland and his bride, Hattie Thompson Holland.

Executive Director Beth White said that another rehabilitation project, replacing window shades to prevent sun damage to the interior of the building, will be done this winter, using a total of $5,000 in grant money, half from GarďŹ eld County and half from The Aspen Thrift Shop.

The museum building, which was donated to the town by the Thompson family, contains household goods and furnishings “original to the home,� according to the society’s website — something that is not typical of other historic houses that have become museums.

The website also notes that the house is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Other properties owned or managed by the society are the old log cabin at the corner of Weant Boulevard and Highway 133, and the nearby brick structure that once served as the town jail.

The log cabin, a former home built in 1887 by local pioneers Oscar Holland, Samuel Bowles and Myron Thompson, is a repository for historic artifacts and a research library, and for years has been the ofďŹ cial home base for the society, where White maintains her ofďŹ ce.

The old jail, built around 1900, once sat on a lot next to the former Town Hall building (which now houses KDNK, the local community access radio station) at the corner of 2nd and Main streets. The structure currently houses a pottery studio managed by potter Michelle Zinanti.

Over the winter, White said, there will not be much activity in the museum, other than some cleaning to counteract the inďŹ ltration of dust from the surrounding construction activities.

In addition, White said, the society will be talking with building contractors to line up projects for next spring, in anticipation of reopening the museum to the public next summer.

Ping-pong as it was meant to be played? Maybe yes and maybe no, but this is how the balls were smacked back and forth at 311 Main St. on Sept. 18. A ping-pong table was the main attraction after DHM Design rolled out some sod, brought in some plants and shrubs, and turned a Main Street parking spot into the town’s smallest park as part of the worldwide PARK(ing) Day. A moose was on the loose in Carbondale early Tuesday morning. His route through town included a leisurely walk south-bound on Sixth Street east of the post office where Eric Chacos recorded the scene. Chacos reports the moose then headed to the Forest Service parking lot on Main Street. While Chacos, of Power Trim Building, was checking a job in the alley about two blocks away, here came the moose again with a police officer in pursuit. Word has it the officer herded the moose into the Carbondale Nature Park north of town hall before he jumped a fence and headed east through Paul Nieslanik’s pasture. Colorado Parks and Wildlife is reminding folks that moose are not afraid of people and can be dangerous, so you should keep your distance.

ree artists, three locales in CCAH show Sopris Sun Staff Report The upcoming CCAH show at the Launchpad connects two artists from outside the Roaring Fork Valley, and one from Glenwood, in what the curator calls a “unified presentation.”

“This exhibit visually articulates the seemingly random animations of wind and water while exploring underlying patterns and themes to this apparent chaos,” said Glenwood’s Lynette O’Kane, one of the three artists in the show, titled “CrossCurrents.”

The other two artists are Meris Barreto and Wendy Prellwitz.

The exhibit includes an installation of delicate wire constructed tumbleweeds, plaster and encaustic works depicting clouds and weather patterns, and mono prints representing the movement and flow of water.

Wendy Prellwitz, who works in oil painting, watercolor and monotypes, lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and was awarded a fellowship from the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in 1998, which allowed her to live and paint along Ireland’s west coast in County Mayo. She also received a grant-in-aid from the St. Botolph Foundation in 2002, which funded a painting trip to Rome.

Meris Barreto grew up in Colorado,

but has lived in Providence, Rhode Island since 1970, earning a degree at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work is multidisciplinary, combining aspects of sculpture, painting and writing.

Ceramics with paper, bronze with stone, glass with metal, and visual with verbal are dualities that are often paired in Barreto’s work.

Lynette O’Kane, CCAH’s local liaison to Barreto and Prellwitz, has shown her mixed media works for over 30 years in locations including New York, Los Angeles and Munich, Germany. Her degree is from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She has taught art at the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design, and has participated in numerous exhibitions including shows at the Denver Art Museum, South Bay Museum of Art, the Las Vegas Museum of Art, the Contemporary Museum of Art in Santa Fe and the Aspen Art Museum. The consistent elements of O’Kane’s work are her exploration of textural surfaces and a relationship to place through media such as plasters, wax, metallics, oil and watercolor.

Wyly featuring work of Bozza, Ransford and Burson Adult classes

Sopris Sun Staff Report The Wyly Art Center in downtown Basalt presents the work of John Bozza, and a two-artist show featuring Sara Ransford and Bunny Burson.

The Bozza show, titled “Alleyworks,” showcases his found-object works using such raw materials as fence posts, logs and natural rocks. He also creates sculptures based on totems, pencils and other every day objects.

“To carve an oversize pencil or paintbrush you constantly have to reference the original object that is being recreated. Playing with scale is the fun part,” Bozza said. He will discuss his work with journalist Brent Gardner-Smith at the Wyly Art Center at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 15.

The Ransford/Burson show, at the Wyly Annex, is titled “Between the Lines” and features Ransford’s recent soda fired paper clay sculptures, an installation and a series of pen and ink drawings. Burson’s side includes prints, an installation and laser-cut work. “In repeatedly drawing and printing lines of script, the unique lettering became my art, Burson said. “For me, text is an image before it becomes a legible element in the artwork.”

Calling 816 artists The second annual Wyly Open is open to Wyly members who live in the 816 Zip code. Each artist may submit one piece of original artwork not previously shown at The Wyly. TRTC opens 21st season with “e Mineola Twins” Sopris Sun Staff Report The Roaring Fork Valley’s award-winning Thunder River Theatre Company opens its 21st season with “The Mineola Twins” by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel. The New York Times calls “The Mineola Twins” a “ most ingenious comic satire ... The twin sisters’ opposition, neatly representing the schism between right and left in the U.S.” Variety says, “The political and cultural divides are exuberantly spoofed ... a bright cartoon of a play ... divinely funny.” BackStage adds, “Vogel was never

more political and never more on target.”

Directed by TRTC’s Sue Lavin, the play features Missy Moore with Cassidy Willey, Brendon Cochran, Kari Sea and Jesse Monsalve. It previews on Sept. 24, opens on Sept. 25-26, continues on Oct. 2-4 then concludes Oct. 8-10.

The play is produced by executive artistic director Lon Winston; company member Brad Moore designed the lights and sound.

Sue Lavin says “The play satirizes our deep cultural and political divisions over such issues as same sex marriage,

gender roles, and radical political stands, whether right or left. By making the lead characters identical twins played by the same actor, Vogel forces a view of what connects us, genetically and nationally, as well as what divides us. C’dale hosts dog agility championships Sopris Sun Staff Report Dogs on Course in North America holds its 2015 national dog agility championships at North Face Park on Sept. 25-27. Admission is free. The hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Events and categories include: standard agility, jumpers, gamblers events (dogs must work away from handlers in one and complete a time gamble in the other), trigility (a special three dog and three handler event) and the National North American Challenge Event in which pre-qualified teams will be competing against other teams from all over North America.

Dog agility is a competition dog sport based loosely on the sport of equestrian jumping, according to a press release. Dogs are handled through a timed obstacle course, and challenges like tunnels, teeter-totters, zig-zag weave poles and jumps. Many breeds, and mixed breeds will be represented in Carbondale.

“Many dogs are shelter/rescue dogs and all have own-

ers who are extremely committed to their animals,” said a Dogs on Course spokesman.

Also on tap at North Face Park: • Members of Colorado Animal Rescue (CARE) will bring dogs that are up for adoption; • Louis Swiss pastry will be offering up its tasty treats; • Paddywacks Pet Outfitter will also be on hand.

City Market has since applied for development permits to build a larger, more modern store in Carbondale.

But Trustee John Hoffmann, who also steps down next year and cannot run for reelection due to term limits, rejoined that the pay hike is meant for future board members, not current ones, and pointed out that each trustee acts as liaison to “at least three boards� beyond their trustee positions, as well as performing a wide range of other duties and spending uncounted hours reading and digesting packets of information for meetings in Carbondale and other locales.

As an example, Hoffmann offered strong praise for Trustee Katrina Byars’ role as Carbondale’s liaison to federal bureaucracies and agencies looking into naturalgas leases in the Thompson Divide area, as part of the board’s opposition to gas drilling in that area.

Thanking her for “countless hours� of work on the issue, and for “really doing a professional job� in representing Carbondale’s position, Hoffmann noted,“the board that comes after us is not going to have any fewer duties.�

And the idea of the raise got considerable support from other members of the public. “We all expect excellence from our elected representatives,â€? said local resident Richard Vottero, “and I think that this board deals with so many complicated issues, and so much information ‌ that it’s a shoe-in that they ought to be compensated (better) than they are now.â€?

And Julia Farwell, a member of the town’s Environmental Board, supported the raise as a way to attract candidates who are a diverse cross-section of the community, rather than “people who have a lot of money and free time on their hands.�

In other action the trustees: • Approved changes to the town’s regulations governing the legal cannabis businesses in town, clarifying restrictions on the cultivation of marijuana plants by individuals on their own property and requiring a 400-foot buffer between commercial cultivation facilities in town; • Approved an expansion plan for White House Pizza, at the corner of 8th and Main streets, with certain conditions; • Approved a special event liquor license for a fundraising event beneďŹ tting the Ross Montessori School, to be held on Oct. 9 at The Orchard in Carbondale. • Approved Carbondale’s participation in a regional Water EfďŹ ciency Plan, after trustees were assured the plan poses no risks to Carbondale’s municipal water rights or its ability to plan for future water needs; • Approved a resolution in favor of Wild and Scenic Designation for the main stem of the Crystal River, from its headwaters in the Snowmass-Maroon Bells Wilderness Area downstream to a point just upstream from the Sweet Jessup Canal diversion structure; • Approved an ordinance amending the town’s rules concerning decorations and other adornments of cemetery plots in the town’s two cemeteries. • Approved a request from Ross Montessori School (RMS) to send a letter of support for a planning grant being sought by the school, from the Great Outdoors Colorado (GoCo) agency, to plan a “play yardâ€? and “outdoor-learning environment areaâ€? that is to be open to the public after school hours every day. In addition, the town has agreed to be the submitting agency for the grant, and to accept the grant if it is awarded to RMS and pass the money directly to the school.

Cat ordinance at what cost?

Dear Editor: The current draft speciďŹ es “a cat not physically restrained when outside the (owner’s) residence ‌ shall be deemed running at large.â€? And further speciďŹ es penalties of $50 - $100 for the ďŹ rst three infractions, as well as $100 - $1,000 for subsequent offenses.

The impetus for the new ordinance appears to stem from a representative of the Audubon Society, citing a statistic that cats in the United States kill 3.5-5 billion birds a year — astonishing ďŹ gures extrapolated from various studies, conducted ‌ where?

The town of Carbondale occupies a geographical area of (approximately, I think) maybe four square miles, with an estimated population of 6,000.
