Dance Initiative finds its space

ance Initiative is the realized half of Peter Gilbert’s dream. The dream’s other half is the not-yet established Carbondale Academy of Performing Arts. Gilbert’s entire vision is inching toward reality, however, after he signed a year’s lease on a 3,000-square-foot upstairs space in the industrial park (aka Foulkrod’s industrial park) immediately north of town hall.

About 800-square-feet of the space is an existing dance studio (complete with a floor-toceiling wall mirror that runs the length of the room and makes it seem twice as large); it’s being called Studio C. Gilbert is turning the remaining space into a large room that he hopes will be used for groups and individuals to rehearse dance, music, theatre and other arts-related activities — maybe even the martial arts.

“It’s a raw space with great possibilities,” Gilbert told The Sopris Sun. “It can be used for classes, workshops … people have already asked me about using it for music … loud music is not a problem.”

At least one other business, Distinctive Boards and Beams, shares the two-story concrete structure with Dance Initiative, which at one time housed a car repair company and various industrial enterprises. The entire industrial park was once owned and operated by Mid-Continent for coal-mine equipment repair and maintenance, truck parking and related activities. Neighbors sometimes complained about coal dust blowing onto their lawns, fences, cars and houses.

Gilbert founded Dance Initiative in 2008 to support local choreographers and dancers from Aspen to Rifle, and to produce events such as Spectrum Dance Collection that gave performances and offered workshops at the Third Street Center last fall.

This weekend, Dance Initiative presents CoMotion for the space’s first performance (for details, please turn to page 4).

Now that Dance Initiative has found its legs, Gilbert is turning more of his attention to creating the Carbondale Academy of Performing Arts. “Maybe this is the start of the Carbondale Academy of Performing Arts … now that they (the dancers) have a home.”

e time is now for Carbondale schools; get involved

By Matthew Hamilton The moment is upon us for profound change in our local educational system.

What do we really want kids to be gaining from our schools? Of course, we want them to learn how to calculate math problems, how to write coherently, to know some history and understand scientific concepts, but what else?

What about having our kids learn how to work well with others and be good listeners?

Or could our schools focus on developing kids’ persistence, integrity, confidence and ambition?

How important is it that we develop kids’ ability to think “outside the box” and find innovative solutions to problems? Or could our schools be helping kids feel unafraid of taking risks and understand the importance of learning from their mistakes and even failures?

What skills do you think our children really need in order to grow into happy, healthy adults who are productive members of their communities?

The Roaring Fork School District is embarking on a project to re-define the shape of education in our schools.With new leadership at the top of our district — Dr. Diana Sirko and Dr. Rob Stein — we are asking community members, parents, teachers and students to participate in the re-visioning of the education we provide for our children. In contrast to the top-down reforms of the past, we want you to be an integral part of that re-visioning.

Nationwide, there’s a growing recognition that the traditional approach to schooling is not sufficient for the challenges that our chil-

dren will be facing as they come of age in the 21st century. Let’s explore together what we think our children truly need and how we can provide those kinds of critical experiences in our local schools.

Our district has the teachers, staff, leadership and community support we need to create schools that truly inspire and captivate students and provide them with the tools they need to succeed. Now it’s time to cooperatively develop a shared vision of where we want to go.

In my eight years living here I’ve had countless conversations about our schools. It’s time to move those discussions from the hallways, pool decks, sidewalks and cafés to some focused community-wide conversations.

Community discussions Over the coming weeks the school district is holding community discussions in each of our local communities (see info box for dates and locations). We are asking community members to attend these gatherings to share your hopes and dreams for the education of our children. These meetings are just the first step toward creating a new vision for our schools.

Some questions to consider as you ponder the future of our schools include the following: • How can we inspire kids so that they’re motivated and eager to learn?

• How can we get kids thinking deeply and critically about the world around them and about the things that matter most to them?

• How can we leverage the incredible talents of our teachers?

• How can we take advantage of the tremendous community resources available?

• What should be the defining characteristics of a successful graduate of Roaring Fork High School?

Answering these and other questions is essential to developing clear goals that will guide the development of our schools over the next 7-10 years.

These are just a few of the resources I’ve

been reading and watching over the past year.

Our school district has a responsibility to respond to the community’s desires. It’s time for our community to step up and provide the direction about its hopes and dreams for our children. It’s time for the district and school board to utilize the tremendous resources at our disposal to deliver a great product for all children. Let’s not let this window of opportunity pass us by.

COHERE introduces C’dale to transition initiatives

In light of increasing climate woes, Middle East conflicts and Peak Oil, the question on many people’s mind is: “How do we prepare ourselves to live less dependently, or even independently, of fossil fuels?”

That question has spawned a worldwide movement called “Transition,” which explores ways communities can learn to thrive while transitioning from our current fossil-

fuel-based economy to one that is sustainable and self-sufficient.

Transition initiatives create systems where businesses, organizations and individuals collaborate in localizing their economy, so as to be less reliant on imported goods the corporate infrastructure and government assistance.

One of the key components of economic localization is the food hub; an organization that collects, markets and distributes the produce of local farmers, ranchers and commer-

cial food operations. By serving as a conduit between small-scale food producers and regional buyers, the food hub keeps money in the local economy while providing job security to the food producers.

Food hubs have been popping up in communities all over the world, gaining momentum in the last five years. Now, even the USDA has a webpage championing these entrepreneurial food distribution systems.

H.P. Hansen talks marijuana; the hog ain’t that fat

By Bob Ward Sopris Sun Correspondent The advent of legal, recreational marijuana in Colorado may be a social and political watershed, but H.P. Hansen doesn’t expect an economic explosion.

Hansen owns a medical marijuana dispensary in Carbondale and is perfectly positioned to capitalize on the Jan. 1 legalization of the substance across the state. But he also knows that most marijuana users — medical, recreational or whatever — already have their suppliers and the user population won’t magically multiply when the state law changes.

“I’m not expecting a big land rush here, I’m really not,” said Hansen, owner of The Center, located in the alley behind Russets restaurant on Main Street.“I think that anyone who wants to be smoking marijuana already is.”

Hansen does think the sheer novelty of being able to walk into a retail store and buy pot — something Americans to date have only experienced in places like Amsterdam — may produce an uptick in customers at his shop and others. Down the road, Colorado and the Roaring Fork Valley may even develop a “marijuana tourism” industry to complement all the other attractions that bring people to the Centennial State.

“I think there are definitely possibilities,” he said.“Maybe they have a pot tour, like a wine tour.”

Hansen, who was once a Carbondale Board of Trustees member himself, thinks the town’s governing board has been smart and open-minded in its approach to marijuana regulation. Both the town and the state intend to put marijuana taxation questions to the voters in November, mainly in order to pay the costs of the regulatory, enforcement and education programs associated with marijuana. Additionally, the town trustees have agreed to cap the number of local marijuana outlets at five; allow all four kinds of marijuana licenses — retail, cultivation, manufacture and testing; prohibit the establishment of marijuana businesses in close proximity to schools and day care centers; and prohibit public consumption of marijuana, much as town ordinance bars public alcohol consumption.

“They made it out of Oz’s clothes,” Emily told The Sun. The scarecrow has done its job this summer and crop losses are minimal, other than one ear of corn that a raccoon probably grabbed. On a related note, if the birdhouse in the Hightower garden looks familiar, you are probably remembering it from the old Six89 restaurant herb garden.

Not only did the birdhouse come from the nearby Six89, but the garden’s raised beds – and dirt – did as well.

Town Briefs Trustees finalize pot talks on Sept. 24

Sopris Sun Staff Report Members of the Carbondale Board of Trustees said they expect to finalize and vote on a recreational marijuana ordinance at their meeting on Sept. 24. Under Colorado legislation, towns and counties must approve marijuana ordinances by Oct. 1 if they want to allow the retail sale of marijuana, or the cultivation, manufacturing or testing of the weed.

The proposed ordinance will be available on the town website (carbondalegov.org) by Sept. 20.

In news from town manager Jay Harrington’s weekly report, dated Sept. 13: • The recent hazardous waste day generated 233 drop-offs, which included 64 tires and“tons of EWaste.”

• Town staffers, RFTA and CDOT have met to discuss the temporary and future location(s) for the bus stop across from Subway sandwich. The Highway 133 utility undergrounding project will disrupt that location for several weeks. “In 2014, when the roundabout is complete, the engineers have concerns about the bus stop remaining in the same location as it now resides,” Harrington’s memo states. “Their concerns relate

to buses pulling away from the stop as vehicles are approaching the entrance of the roundabout.”

• A group of volunteers from Jaywalker Lodge assisted a town crew and performed “some extraordinary maintenance” at White Hill Cemetery.

• A property owner on Mesa Verde complained about the large amount of thistle that was growing on the hillside of a lot in his neighborhood. He was told that the property belongs to the town and the town will cut down next year. “The property owner was a bit frustrated with the Town because we do not have plans to eradicate the weeds,” the memo states.

• The Parks & Recreation Commission was presented with a signed petition to rename the North Face tennis courts the “Darien Tennis & Pickleball Courts.” The Commission approved the request contingent upon the outcome of the 45-day public comment period.

• Dina Prieto has accepted a job with Basalt Police Department and her last day is Sept. 27. “We appreciate her long and dedicated service to the Town of Carbondale,” the memo states.

Cop Shop The following events are drawn from incident reports of the Carbondale Police Department SATURDAY Sept. 7 At about 2 a.m. police used a taser on one man near a downtown restaurant and arrested a total of three people on charges that include disorderly conduct and obstructing a peace officer in the commission of his duties. The incident started when officers encountered a 23-year-old man who they said was behaving belligerently, using foul language and making racial slurs at people. When officers approached the man, a second man (also 23) started videotaping the confrontation. When the second man refused an order to move to a sidewalk where police invited him to continue recording the incident, an officer tased and incapacitated him. The third party, a 33year-old female, put herself between the first man and police at one point in an attempt to shield him. She was also arrested.

Talking about dog ticks and the new normal

By Ken Neubecker Special to The Sopris Sun My wife found a tick on our dog, Gus. It was unusual in that Gus rarely, if ever, has had a tick on him. But what is more unusual is that ticks are pretty well gone by the middle of July. Finding one vigorously crawling up Gus’s leg at the beginning of September, on the weekend heralding the end of summer is not “normal.”

I also found several large black stoneflies crawling out of the Roaring Fork at the former tree farm last week. It struck me as odd as they too are an insect of early summer. I didn’t think much more about it until one of the big black bugs nearly beaned me as it flew like a tail-heavy tactical bomber across the City Market parking lot.

It has also seemed unusually hot most of the summer, with a late and lengthy wet season. The rivers have climbed back up to“normal” flows, creating a sort of inverted hydrograph – lower mid-summer flows with raising flows as autumn approaches.

But many things are still“normal,”or so it seems. The hundreds of sprinklers at River Valley Ranch still keep singing in the rain, keeping the invasive bluegrass saturated to the point of drowning – RVR, where the grass is always wet. The flooding on the Front Range is record breaking, but not unprecedented.

The geese and blue birds are flocking, preparing for the annual flight to warmer climes. Brown trout are getting into spawning

mode and even a few aspens are beginning to turn. Schools opened right on cue with the usual morning and afternoon parade of disgruntled kids slowing traffic on Highway 133.

Still, I have a bumper crop of ripening red tomatoes, something that doesn’t usually happen until nearly October. That’s definitely not normal, not for me at least.

Could this be a harbinger of things to come as global warming progresses? Climate models tend to predict that areas north of us will become wetter, and areas south and southwest drier. And all areas will tend to get warmer.

Climate models can make reasonable predictions about trends, but it’s hardly a way to predict weather, or isolated events. There were also cool periods this summer, although they were rare.We like to look at events as indicators of what is really happening, but that can be a big mistake. Still, when singular events intensify or increase in frequency over time they can be predictive.

The climate models also indicate that as winters warm precipitation will occur more as rain than snow. You could argue that we are already beginning to see this weather pattern change. That’s not good if we expect to maintain the status quo for water supplies and ski areas.

“Seeing”and dealing with climate change means we have to think in terms of systems, not linear or isolated events. The same is true if we want to understand how “sustainability” works. Climate affects complex weather

systems and patterns, not singular events like a hot summer and wet fall. The two may in fact be linked, but then again maybe not.

Make no mistake: anthropogenic climate change and global warming are very real.

Many things will change, and many things will remain the same. Solutions also need to be systemic, not singular and isolated“events,” both for mitigating climate change and for creating greater“sustainability,”however you want to define it. Change has always been a part of nature and culture, although even that may be changing in pace and pattern.

Maybe ticks in September are going to be part of the “new normal,” along with large stoneflies hatching. Some of these changes will be difficult, although we can adapt. Raising a healthy crop of tomatoes regularly in the Colorado high country might be a sign of the new normal as well. That, I’m afraid, will be a mixed blessing.

Celebrate National Plug in Day on Sept. 27 Sopris Sun Staff Report Sept. 27 is National Plug In (vehicle) Day, and the public is invited to a plug-in vehicle display and presentation from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at town hall, according to a press release.

Attendees will be able to test drive a Chevy Volt from Mountain Chevrolet and learn about plug-in vehicles. “They are fun to drive, cost less to fuel, and offer clean-air benefits,” said a local Plug In spokesman.

This event is part of the third annual National Plug In Day. Free pizza will be served.

The event will include: • 3 p.m. – A presentation on plug-in ve-

hicles, tax incentives, and infrastructure; • 3:30-4:30 p.m.– ChevyVolt test drives; vehicle display, including the Nissan Leaf (electric vehicle) and Ford C-MAX Energi (plug-in hybrid). Charging demonstrations using the town of Carbondale’s new Level 2 charger will also be given.

Experts from local clean energy organizations CLEER, CORE and Northern Colorado Clean Cities will be on hand to discuss local plug-in vehicle deployment efforts and tax incentives.

The event is presented by Northern Colorado Clean Cities, CLEER, CORE, Mountain Chevrolet, the town of Carbondale, Garfield Clean Energy, the Electric Auto Association, and Plug In America.

Locals raise 10K for AZ charities

The membership of the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District announced the citizens of Carbondale and Redstone raised $10,000 to donate to Prescott Arizona fire fighters charities. June 30, 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, part of the Prescott Arizona Fire Department, were killed while fighting the Yarnell Hill wildfire in Yarnell, Arizona, according to a press release. The Yarnell Hill Fire burned 8,377 acres and destroyed 114 structures. The membership of the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District set up a table at City Market for a week and collected donations from shoppers.

They also collected donations at the Redstone Summer Concert Series. Friends and co-workers of Carbondale volunteer firefighters also donated funds.

“The Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District thank all who donated to this worthy cause and to City Market for allowing the donation table,” said a fire district spokesman.

Pianist Clay Boland Jr. has released his 10th CD, titled “The Gypsy in My Soul: Romantic Songs from the Big Band Years.” The CD features 16 songs written or co-written by Boland’s father, Clay Boland, whose first hit was “Dreary Weather.” Boland’s father was born in 1903 and died in 1963. “He was a self-taught pianist who worked his way through college with music.” The senior Boland decided against trying to make a career out of music during the Depression and became a dentist in Philadelphia instead. Still, about 125 of his songs were published and some were recorded by Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and other big band leaders.

UpSki in C’dale conquering mountains worldwide Introduces new product

By Nicolette Toussaint Sopris Sun Correspondent Last spring, Kevin Passmore skied up and over Mount Sopris. The trip involved some hiking, but he relied mostly on wind power to go up and gravity to come down. “There’s not much else to say other than awesome!” he enthused, writing about the 10-mile trek in his blog.

Passmore is a co-owner of the company that manufactures the UpSki, a vented, 16foot-in-diameter circular canopy that makes uphill skiing possible. UpSki’s colorful canopy enables a skier to glide up 35-45 degree slopes, working best when pushed by 10-40 mile per hour winds. In addition to Passmore’s Sopris trek and his ascent of 14,275-foot Mt. Torreys (the highest U.S. UpSki ascent to date) UpSkis have been used to climb 22,837-foot Mt. Aconcagua in the Andes.

UpSki has sold hundreds of colorful ski parachutes, and since moving to Carbondale in the spring of 2012, the company has begun manufacturing two popular lines of bike bags as well.

“We are actively designing and testing new products for bike touring. We’re honored to see growth in sales in our existing bike products. And we’re busy with production of UpSkis for the 2013/14 winter season,” Passmore told The Sopris Sun.

UpSki’s headquarters, at the north end of town off Highway 133 on Dolores Way, holds huge bolts of ripstop nylon, eight heavy-duty sewing machines and large motorized knives for cutting the 24 fabric pieces that go into each $2,800 UpSki ‘chute. Passmore, who lived and worked in Glenwood Springs until 2011, says that relocating to Carbondale was “a big tradeoff” but that ultimately “it was hard to resist immersing myself in the community and energy offered by Carbondale.”

He encourages other aspiring entrepreneurs to take advantage of the Roaring Fork Business Resource Center’s education and networking resources. He also advises that “having a good network of friends and business connections to fall back on is very important,” as is “letting people know what you are doing and not being afraid to ask for help when you need it.”

A mechanical engineer by training, Passmore has used his skills not only to improve the UpSki, but also to create more versatile bike bags. UpSki has developed two popular bags: the XtraHuge and the FAT20 Framebag.

“My favorite thing in the world right now is these bike bags,” said Passmore, hauling out an XtraHuge. The 9- by 15- by 23inch bag is indeed huge; as Passmore unbuckles it and opens the – Kevin Passmore rolled top, it looks large enough to hold a golden retriever. It’s reCo-owner, UpSki inforced inside with plastic framing and is equipped with internal pockets.

Passmore, who struggled with carrying a backpack on long bike trips, created the big bag as an after-market accessory to XtraCycle™ long tail bikes. “The idea of having something more contained that carries ski gear, camping gear or groceries is great,” he said. “It means you can be gone for days.”

It also means that you can carry a lot of fruit. Passmore recently cycled up to Missouri Heights, harvested apricots from a friend’s tree and brought more than 40 pounds of fruit home in the double-stitched, reinforced bag. XtraHuge bags should be mounted in pairs to balance the bike; a pair sells for $250.

UpSki’s second bag, the $90 FAT20 Framebag, is sleek, fitting inside a bicycle’s frame and nestling unobtrusively between the rider’s legs. Like the XtraHuge, the FAT20 is built with internal supports that keep it from bulging. Both bags are available at Aloha Mountain Cyclery.

Expanding This winter, UpSki will expand its marketing and sales efforts into Europe and will also run “a Kickstarter campaign (kickstarter.com) to help fund new demo equipment to allow more people to experience up-skiing in Colorado,” Passmore said.

Passmore grew up in Dallas, where he was a sailing and bicycling enthusiast. He started skiing when he attended the University of Colorado-Boulder and first encountered up-skiing when he saw two skiers in the backcountry. “ … (they were) making it look incredibly easy! One was ascending up a valley at 10-15 miles an hour and towing someone behind him,” he recalls. Excited, he talked to

MSHS offers heritage garden tours The Mt. Sopris Historical Society offers tours of its heritage garden at the Third Street Center at 6 p.m. on Sept. 25 and 27.

The conference is convened by MENTOR: the National Mentoring Partnership, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the Harvard School of Public Health, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and United Way Worldwide.

The Buddy Program, now in its 40th year, is a non-profit mentoring organization serving youth from Aspen to Carbondale through one of three one-on-one mentoring programs.

Zoning-code rewrite process kicks off Sept. 24-26 EDITOR’S NOTE – Carbondale is updating and consolidating its zoning code and other land use regulations into a unified development code (UDC). This column from the planning and zoning commission (P&Z) begins a series of updates that will continue throughout the 16-month process. This column will: address what a unified development code is, introduce the town’s code consultant (Clarion Associates), outline steps leading up to the kickoff meeting, and explain what to expect in the coming months.

First, here’s a change in terminology. To date, these columns have referred to the rewrite of the “zoning code.” From here on out these columns will refer to writing a “unified development code” (UDC).

The new UDC will consolidate regulations from multiple sections of the Municipal Code, including: the entirety of the zoning regulations, Title 18 (aka the “zoning code”) and the subdivision regulations in Title 17, and many other sections that regulate the development of land in Carbondale. In short, the new name will be the UDC, not the “zoning code.”

We are excited to partner with Clarion Associates during the UDC process. They have enormous experience writing a variety of codes including unified development codes for municipalities small and large. Please check out their website and see for yourself at www.clarionassociates.com.

Setting the stage Earlier this year, the trustees adopted a new comprehensive plan. The comprehensive plan will be the guiding document throughout the UDC process. The town hired Clarion, and staff has provided the firm with two big boxes of background documents from which they have begun their work.

The next step is a three-day kick-off process with Clarion. There will be information-

gathering meetings, a field tour and stakeholder interviews. The majority of events will involve staff and a variety of groups. The kick-off from Sept. 24-26 will culminate with a two-hour meeting with P&Z at town hall starting at 7 p.m. on Sept. 26. If you are real code geek or a public process junkie, please join us that night to hear more.

The overall schedule is about 16 months until a finalized draft of the UDC is completed. The process is broken down into three phases: Phase 1 will run through October 2013 and will include information gathering and stakeholder interviews. Phase 2, which will run through January 2014, will create an annotated outline of the new code including the structure, purpose, commentary and relation to existing codes. Phase 3 will begin drafting the unified development code. The drafts will be presented in three installments: Zoning, Development Standards, and Administration, which will last through December 2014.

During each of these phases, there will be opportunities for public input and feedback through stakeholder meetings, public presentations and public meetings in front of the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z). One of the primary tools for encouraging public review of the draft UDC will be the project website at www.carbondaleudc.com The best way to stay involved is to check out the project website, which features updates, upcoming and past events, and newsletter sign up. Later, the website will also feature drafts of the UDC. At the conclusion of this process, there will be a series of public hearings in front of the Carbondale Board of Trustees prior to adoption of the unified development code. While public hearings will include time for public comment and input, we are here to encourage you to get involved early, when your comments can be most effectively incorporated into the UDC. Sisters Erin Jones and Amy Forsey were raised on the Front Range in Evergreen and are now completing their first decade as business owners in the Roaring Fork Valley.

“We bought the business in December 2003,” says Amy. “Erin was looking for an opportunity to be her own boss.”

The stationery business appealed to Erin, as did Basalt. Prior to owning the business she worked for nonprofits in both California and Denver.

Amy joined the business right out of college in 2003 and together they’ve seen their business grow by leaps and bounds. In fact, earlier this year they were able to double their floor space with a move up the street to a spot located on the river.

tionery,” says Amy, “and are often told we write the best thank you notes. It seemed like a perfect fit! We have loved being a part of so many life occasions for hundreds of people in the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond. We’ve had a tremendous following and have watched many of our customers grow up, from their birth announcements to birthday parties to graduations and first jobs.”

With just the one store front in Basalt they are still able to assist customers internationally. They work with brides all over the United States and are beginning to map countries they’ve shipped to: Canada, Australia, New Zealand, England and France thus far.

The girls have some rather famous customers of the Hollywood variety too. “It’s always fun to turn around and see them browsing in the store,” says Erin, “We’ve had secret back office meetings with clients to

avoid the press. We even helped a gentleman rent a tux so he could surprise his girlfriend with a mountain top proposal.”

Their business is really two parts: retail for stationery and gifts, and custom paper goods’ design and services.

“We have seen a huge increase in the custom part of our business,” says Erin. “We even launched a custom welcome bag product for Aspen area destination events and weddings (theHELLOtote.com) which keeps us extremely busy during wedding season.”

While Erin moved out of the area several years ago, she still operates all the back office details for the store.

Amy runs day-to-day operations in the store and is the designer.

“Together we have the perfect combination of left-brain, right-brain for a small, creative business,” says Amy. “And . . . we’re sisters.”

COHERE î&#x2C6;&#x2021;om page 2 Cutting edge For the past 10 years, various individuals and organizations in Carbondale have worked on developing strategies for transitioning to a post-oil community. Carbondale Economic Localization (CEL) was an early attempt at bringing visionaries together to map a way forward, especially in the area of food security.

A few years ago former CEL member Gwen Garcelon, along with Dawne Vrabel, formed a focus group called The Roaring Fork Food Policy Council, which is active in collecting and disseminating information covering all areas of local food production and distribution.

On Sept. 21-22, the RFFPC is teaming up with Planting Possibilities Community Garden to host a â&#x20AC;&#x153;harvest gatheringâ&#x20AC;? aimed at bringing the community together around the idea of transitioning to sustainability. The event is called COHERE.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Coherence is about the science and magic of unity,â&#x20AC;? said Paul Black of Planting Possibilities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re conďŹ dent that as we share our ideas, resources, gifts and learn to collaborate and cooperate in creative ways, we will spark community-building projects and sustainable systems for the future.â&#x20AC;?

Staring at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Third Street Center there will be interactive forums featuring local and national leaders fostering discussions about creating a food hub, and building a resilient self-reliant local economy. That evening there will also be a community potluck with live music and ďŹ re dancing from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Carbondale Community Oven (located behind Third Street Center) will be open to the public at 3 p.m. on Saturday to receive ready-to-bake loaves that will be shared at the eveningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s potluck. The community oven is a prime example of transition initiatives â&#x20AC;&#x201D; providing opportunities for communal cooking without using electricity. The all-volunteer

oven group also encouraged wheat production by a local rancher and recently purchased a commercial wheat grinder.

Beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, the gathering will move to Planting Possibilities Community Garden in the neighborhood across Highway 133 from the Third Street Center (festival-goers can park at TSC). There will be games, do-it-yourself workshops, artisanal foods and beverages, and a trade blanket event in which people are encouraged to bring items such as fruits and vegetables, home-made goods, musical instruments and gift cards for services to be traded in a way thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reminiscent of Native American tradition.

Modeling the future In an attempt to model the role of philanthropy in the alternative economy envisioned by the transition movement, COHERE organizers set up an experimental crowd-funding program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are a lot of good-hearted people in

this area, with the means to help this dream [of creating a sustainable future] happen,â&#x20AC;?said Black.
