Enrichment Wednesdays update: some programs cut Other organizations invited to step up

By Rob Stein Those of you in our Roaring Fork Schools community know that we’ve made a number of changes to this year’s Enrichment Wednesday programming, including a shift to serving primarily elementary school students, and an increase in program fees.

We sincerely apologize for being late in letting parents and community members know about the changes, and we recognize that it created hardships for many families to accommodate fee increases and program cuts. We are committed to doing better going forward. Therefore, we want to give a full explanation of how we got to this place, and to let the community know well in advance what to expect this year and in the future.

Enrichment Wednesdays Schools are tasked with many things in order to educate our children and serve our region’s youth, ranging from children’s health to after-school care. Many fall outside of the realm of education, and outside of the core business of schools. While these things undoubtedly help children succeed, educationally and otherwise, the more schools take on programmatically, the less they are able to deliver on their core educational mission.

We are fortunate to share a strong overlap with the mission of the Aspen Community Foundation’s Cradle to Career Initiative (CCI): to help children succeed and flourish.

CCI has been able to convene and fund many programs that support the success of our region’s youth, and that help us as a school district focus more directly on our core mission of education.

As part of our community-wide visioning effort in 2013, our parents and community

told us that attracting, developing and retaining teachers was one of their highest priorities. We agreed strongly. Shortly thereafter, in 2014, we developed a plan to provide quality professional development time for teachers on Wednesday afternoons, and CCI saw an opportunity to support this plan through enrichment activities offered during that same window. Thus, Enrichment Wednesdays was created as a short-term opportunity for community members and local nonprofits to work together to provide youth enrichment classes, while easing families’ challenge of transitioning to the new schedule.

Now that the program is in its third and final year, it is operating on a much smaller budget than in previous years. Enrichment Wednesday costs an average of approximately $280,000 per year. For the first two years, the Aspen Community Foundation shouldered the bulk of that cost, and this year, they provided a generous, but reduced, $100,000 investment in the program. To address the $180,000 shortfall, we reduced programming by shifting the primary focus of the program to elementary students (and are providing very limited programming to middle and high school students).

We also increased program fees for families not eligible for free and reduced-price lunch from $1 per day to $10 per day, in order to fill budget gaps. We anticipate that the total fees collected will average $50,000 this year. Although the $10 daily fee is much less than the actual cost of serving each participant, and is likely comparable with other after-school options, we know that any increase causes stress on hard-working families’ budgets. These program reductions and fees will help us continue to sustain programming for this year, but will not fully cover all of the program expenses.

The future Roaring Fork Schools, the Aspen Community Foundation and CCI all see the value of high-quality after school programming.

We hope that local organizations, nonprofits and families will work together to continue to find solutions to after-school care.

To help determine the community’s desire and need for ongoing programming, Roaring Fork Schools and the Aspen Community Foundation will jointly support a Community Liaison who will host a series of open meetings later this fall in Basalt, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs. During these meetings, families, organizations, and nonprofits will be invited to discuss the opportunity for creating a sustainable plan for the continuation of Enrichment Wednesdays. Should the community choose to continue the program, Roaring Fork Schools hopes to continue to be a partner by providing space, transportation, marketing and other in-kind costs.

The Enrichment Wednesdays Community Liaison position will be posted this month on both Roaring Fork Schools’ and the Aspen Community Foundation’s websites, and information on this community engagement process will be shared in future articles and RFSD’s community newsletter (you can subscribe here). Richardson lays it out Dear Editor: Yes, it’s me again on the campaign trail – but this time I’m running for mayor. Trying to fill Stacey Bernot’s shoes as acting mayor after she stepped down has been a challenge, but one that I have been honored to accept.

As crazy as it sounds, I also really enjoy it.

The roles and responsibilities of the mayor are much different than those of a trustee.

While a trustee can focus on the many different issues, the mayor must focus on planning and facilitating meetings, and serves as a liaison and spokesperson between the board of trustees, town staff and the public.

To be an effective mayor, I believe a unique commitment and skillset are necessary.

First and foremost, being an effective mayor requires a strong work ethic to follow through on not just the duties of running a meeting, but putting the time into

planning the discussions so they are strategic and productive. This includes contacting applicants and staff ahead of time, and then summarizing board discussions to facilitate good decisions. My experience has been that organizational skills are key to stay on top of the constant flow of tasks.

Secondly, its critical for the mayor to have a network of trusted relationships, through good times and bad. Regardless of potentially unpopular board decisions, the mayor must maintain communication with stakeholders like businesses, non-profits, town staff, different community interest groups, committees, and other governmental agencies. The mayor must also have the trust and support of the trustees to be the board’s spokesperson.

Last but not least, being an effective mayor requires active listening and putting the person or issue at hand above self. More

times than not the issues are more complicated than they appear or what is reported.

Anybody can read the facts, but it takes a good listener to truly understand perspectives. For me, that’s the foundation of making decisions that are in the best interest of Carbondale. I also think it helps build trusted relationships.

An effective mayor should be a leader of leaders and I think I have consistently and effectively demonstrated this leadership. So before you vote, I urge you to ask for the opinions of other community leaders who have worked with Ed Cortez, Katrina Byars and/or me. Then, please take the time to vote — its important. I appreciate your support and look forward to serving you as Carbondale’s mayor.

B/P/T Commission kicks streetlights to trustees

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer Monday night, the Carbondale Bikes, Pedestrians and Trails Commission sent the issue of streetlights and public safety to the board of trustees, following an assault and attempted sexual assault on women after dark earlier in the summer.

The B/P/T recommendation reads, “That the Board of Trustees should address adequate lighting along priority corridors to be determined. The Board additionally recommends that additional lighting should be one piece of a more comprehensive approach to address citizen safety in town.”

The recommendation moved forward to the trustees 4-0, with Rob Morey, Darryl Fuller, Darren Broome and Tom Penzel approving. Commission members Kristofer Johnson and John Spiess were absent.

The trustees will discuss the B/P/T recommendation at its meeting on Sept. 20.

The Carbondale Board of Trustees sent the streetlight and public safety issue to the B/P/T for a recommendation in August, after several women attended a trustees meeting, asking for brighter streetlights and other actions to increase public safety – especially for

women, some of whom negotiate streets after getting off RFTA buses at the park-and-ride lot at the intersection of Highway 133 and Village Road.

At Monday night’s meeting, several women laid out their concerns for pedestrian and bicycle safety after dark. Two of the women told the B/P/T members they didn’t like speaking up, but implied they were doing so to prevent other women from falling victims to sexual assaults and a attacks. (Note: The Sopris Sun is not using the women’s name, but will refer to them as Woman 1 and Woman 2).

“I’ll never walk through this town (after dark) alone,” said Woman 1, relating how she was raped and left for dead at Vetter Trail Park (at the east end of Sopris Avenue) in 1972.

“Your (the B/P/T members) agenda is different from mine,” she said. “It changed my life.”

Woman 1 alluded to town lighting ordinances, which are partially based on the international Night Sky Initiative, and said residents, can go 10 miles out of town and view the night sky. “(The town should) put citizen safety first.”

Woman 2 said she “didn’t want to be here either,” but related how she was attacked in August of 2002. “After that, I noticed how many dark areas there are (around town) … Where there is darkness, there is the potential for danger.”

Trustees pick Henry for vacancy; Byars abstains

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Heather Henry — a long-time member of Carbondale’s Parks & Recreation Commission and the Planning and Zoning Commission, and well-regarded local businesswoman — was chosen by the town board of trustees (BOT) on Tuesday night to replace recently-departed trustee A.J. Hobbs on the board.

Henry, according to statements made at the meeting, will be sworn in on Sept. 27.

Her selection — she was nominated by Trustee Ben Bohmfalk, with a second by Trustee Marty Silverstein — was approved by a 4-0 vote, although there were five at the meeting: Frosty Merriott, Acting Mayor Dan Richardson, Katrina Byars, Bohmfalk and Silverstein.

Byars abstained from voting because, in her words, “this process doesn’t feel right to me.”

Byars, who is running against Richardson and former trustee Ed Cortez to become the town’s next mayor in the November election, had not publicly expressed such concerns prior to Tuesday’s meeting.

At Tuesday’s BOT meeting, however, she echoed a charge made by Cortez at a previous BOT meeting.

She said the selection process is “so different than an election, that it doesn’t feel … it just feels out of balance for me.

I wasn’t comfortable with it from the beginning.” She decided to go along without voicing her objections, she continued, and agreed to cast a ballot if necessary to break a tie vote.

Her decision to abstain did not sit well with some of her fellow trustees.

“I personally don’t think it’s appropriate to abstain,” said Richardson, “but that’s your choice.”

Bohmfalk, who already had nominated Henry, added that while he “respects” Byars’ disagreement with the process, he felt “it’s your responsibility to get involved … and influence that process” rather than back away at the last minute.

Byars expressed concern that, after interviewing the last two of the six candidates to fill Hobbs’ vacancy, the board ended up “moving directly to a nomination” without discussion among the trustees.

“I felt like we were going to talk about it,” she said.

After Richardson expressed his assessment of the different candidates for Hobbs’ vacant position, he stated his support for Bohmfalk’s motion to select Henry, and the board voted to approve.

Earlier in the meeting, the trustees had heard from Town Manager Jay Harrington and Finance Director Renae Gustine that Carbondale is facing shortfalls in some of its revenues for the coming year. In other recreation notes from Herrington’s weekly memo to trustees, staff and others: • Recreation programming for this week included Motion Mondays for preschoolers, the Start Smart Flag Football program, bike and skateboarding lessons at the North Face Bike Park and other activities. • The fall Recreation Department brochure (included as an insert in this week’s Sopris Sun) lists the variety of activities available this fall at the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center (CRCC), including: youth climbing classes, ag football, youth volleyball, the Friday Afternoon Sports Club, Dodgeball Derivatives, Early Release Wednesday Open Gym, Facilitated Climbing, SAHN Tae Kwon Do and Dinky Dunkers.

SAHN karate instructors Cedar Rose Guelberth (3rd Dan) and Grand Master Richard Hodder (9th Dan) will be offering two free self-defense workshops this fall, as a community service. Pre-registration is required; the ďŹ rst workshop is scheduled for Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Carbondale Recreation Center. The second workshop will be on Oct. 29, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the same location. Registration is offered either online or at the Carbondale Recreation Center. Harrington cautioned interested participants that there are a limited number of spaces available, so those hoping to take part should register early.

In other notes from Harrington’s memo: • Three candidates to take on the job of public works direc-

tor, which is being vacated by the retiring Larry Ballenger, were interviewed last week, and Harrington said he hopes to make a tentative job offer to a candidate this week. • Street crew workers graded and “maintainedâ€? the White Hill Cemetery road last week, and the street sweeper was out brushing down sections of street in different areas around town, Harrington wrote. In addition, brush and tree limbs have been trimmed back along sidewalks in certain locations, and the crew has started working to replace trafďŹ c signs in the roundabout that were damaged in an accident the week before. • Town arborist David Coon is working with Aspen Tree Service to deal with an infestation of aphids on linden trees along Main Street. The aphids, Harrington wrote, damage the trees in ways that attract wasps and bees, which in turn are a nuisance for pedestrians. Harrington predicted that there will be additional community information about the aphids and the proposed treatment of said insects in a future memo. • The National Sheep Dog Finals take place through Sept. 18 at Strang Ranch on Missouri Heights. • At Gateway RV Park, located at the junction of Highways 82 and 133, the occupancy rate for the week of Sept. 3-9 was 69 percent, with 97 of the 140 available spots booked, according to Harrington’s memo. Reservations for the week of Sept. 12-17 stood at 44 sites reserved for 101 people. • The Planning and Zoning commission (P&Z) at last week’s meeting discussed and continued its review of the Lines PUD amendment request, to add residential uses to the commercial and ofďŹ ce sections of the Crystal Village PUD (next discussion set for Sept. 22), and Phase 2 of the Thompson Park site plan review (next discussion set for Oct. 6). The commission also recommended that Michael Durant be re-appointed to the P&Z, which will be considered at a future meeting.

SUNDAY, Sept. 4: At 11:32 p.m. police were informed of a possible vehicle theft from a home on Colorado Avenue, which is believed to have occurred at about 4 p.m. on Sept. 2. The vehicle reportedly had not been located as of Monday.

MONDAY, Sept. 5: At 3:59 a.m. police were called about a domestic dispute at a home in Carbondale. After investigating, they arrested the 19-year-old male at the home, on charges of harassment, disorderly conduct and domestic violence, and took him to GarďŹ eld County Jail.

TUESDAY, Sept. 6: At 10:14 a.m. police were called to a school regarding marijuana found at the school. A juvenile female, in the presence of her mother, was ticketed for possession.

Denver Post inks TDC Last weekend’s Sunday Denver Post included an in-depth profile of the Carbondale-based Thompson Divide Coalition, and of the strange bedfellows that have worked for years to conserve public lands in the Thompson Divide area – a landscape described by the article’s author as “one of the state’s most treasured playgrounds.” The profile specifically examined the often-competing interests of different stakeholders in Thompson Divide area, and praised their ability to work together towards a common goal. “In a political environment where compromise is fleeting, the Thompson Divide Coalition is a model for finding common ground” wrote Jason Blevins, of The Denver Post. Blevins went on to write “[the coalition] has proven that a unified voice can achieve great things, even if those voices rarely agree on other issues.” The article also highlighted the “balanced approach” taken by the Bureau of Land Management in its recent decision to cancel 25 undeveloped, improperly-issued oil and gas leases in the Divide; and outlined the coalition’s goal of securing permanent protection for the area, which comprises 220,000 acres in the heart of the White River National Forest. “It’s time for the Thompson Divide oil and gas battle to end” said Jason Sewell, a fifth generation rancher in the Thompson Divide “who hopes his precocious 6-year-old son, Rio, someday is able to tend cattle on their pastures without fighting.

Regarding sucking insects The town is spraying Neem seed oil to fight a recent aphid attack on trees on linden trees in front of the Pour House. The aphids are attracting wasps, and creating a nuisance and hazard for pedestrians, according to a press release. “Neem seed oil is 100 percent plant derived and is used for organic gardening to specifically target chewing and sucking insects,” said a town spokesman.

The application is slated for Sept. 20, from 6 to 6:30 a.m. “We will close down a 30-foot section of the sidewalk while the oil is being sprayed, as the product may cause minor skin or eye irritation. For details, call Carbondale Town Arborist David Coon at 510-1331.

Potter thought it might be fun to look for Agnes, so as she did her shopping she snooped around. She thought Agnes might be trying to blend in with the stuffed animals, so first she looked on that aisle, but no luck. After shopping, Potter figured she would be methodical and started looking in the dog-food aisle, which is the farthest to the left from the front door. Potter looked from bottom to top and when she reached the end of that aisle, she looked up and on the top shelf found Agnes, peeking around one of the birdfeeders. She went to the counter and told the crew she’d found Agnes. They told her to fetch the wayfaring sheep and bring her to the counter, where she traded in Agnes for two tickets to the entire week of sheepdog finals at Strang Ranch (Sept. 20-25). “It was fun, it was cool, it was great!” Potter told The Sopris Sun. Town council om page 3 bridge property tax revenues, which is shared among the six towns in the county — will be cut to about $95,000 in 2017 after the county commissioners unilaterally slashed the tax rate for the road and bridge fund.

Harrington said the tax rate — reduced from 3.5 mills to 1.5 mills — was cut because the county had accumulated roughly $30 million in unspent road and bridge funds, and the commissioners felt the tax rate should be cut as a result.

At the same time, Harrington reported, the town can expect lower revenues from federal mineral lease fees and severance taxes tied to the oil and gas industry, due to sharply reduced drilling activities in the area known as the “gas patch” in western Garfield County.

And, Harrington said, the town is likely to pay considerably higher health-insurance costs for its employees in the coming year.

“On the good-news side,” he told the trustees, Carbondale’s sales tax revenues have been trending at about five percent higher than in 2015, which is somewhat better than the four-percent increase projected in the town’s budget.

Still, Harrington said, it is likely that the town will have to dip into its reserve funds in order to accomplish any capital improvements projects in the coming year.

Gustine told the trustees there will be greater details available about the budget after the town department heads submit their departmental budgetary goals and requests in the coming weeks.

Currently, according to budget projections, the town expects to have a General Fund balance of roughly $5.3 million at the end of 2016, having spent about $6.7 million in the General Fund (which covers day-to-

day operations) for the year.

Overall, the 2016 budget anticipates a total ending-fund balance of about $15 million, including about $6.8 million in dedicated funds for water and sewer service, and several other fund accounts.

In other action, the board: • Approved a “letter of engagement” for Mark Chain Consulting, to assist the town in swapping town-owned land in the Overlook and Delaney Park area north of Town Hall, for a newly created shelf of private land, owned by the Nieslanik family, at the western end of the White Hill Cemetery. The swap is being structured to allow the town to expand the cemetery onto the newly created parcel, which was built up using fill dirt trucked from development projects elsewhere in the valley; • Approved liquor license renewals for the City Market grocery store and the Black Nugget saloon; • Approved a modification of the town’s anti-loitering ordinance to eliminate language aimed at keeping vagrants from begging for money from passersby. The provision was tagged as unconstitutional by the American Civil Liberties Union, along with similar provisions in anti-loitering laws in other towns in Colorado; • Approved a special-event liquor license for the No Man’s Land film festival, scheduled for Sept. 24 from 6-9 p.m. at the Carbondale Community School; • Relaxed town codes prohibiting the grazing of goats (believed to date back to the 1940s) to accommodate plans by the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority to employ goats to control weeds along the Rio Grande Trail between Aspen and Glenwood Springs.

Obituary Laura Gardner Bair 1922-2016 Laura Gardner Bair passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016 with her family at her side.

Born Feb. 7, 1922 in Satank, Colorado, Laura was the first born to Lawrence Gardner and Gertrude Gilmore. Laura welcomed three brothers and six sisters to the family Laura attended grade school on Missouri Heights and high school in Carbondale. Laura’s senior year she stayed home due to her mother’s illness. Laura soon took on the mother role for her smaller siblings.

In the summer of 1939, Laura traveled to Moab, Utah, to marry her sweetheart, Charles Paul Piffer. Laura gave birth to two wonderful children: Larry and Jean.

Charles died in 1946 due to polio. Laura remarried two years later to Jay “Jack” Bair. Larry and Jean then welcomed two sisters and four brothers into the family: JaNaye, Janice, Wendell, Grant, Wade and Woody.

When the children were young, Laura’s full-time job was caring for them, gardening and canning everything she possibly could. Her canned pickles became very desirable to the whole family

and their friends. It wasn’t unusual for one of the children to sneak a jar and share with everyone. Jack spent many months away during the summers at sheep camp, leaving Laura with all the responsibility of the children. She ran a tight ship and expected everyone to do their share of chores. One of her boys said, “She could give a whippin’ worse than any man.”

Laura was very active in the Church of Latter-Day Saints. She held many jobs such as primary teacher, relief society, and Cub Scout den mother. Laura held a few jobs throughout her life, starting with cleaning cabins during the summer and ending with 22 years at Heritage Park Care Center. She retired at the age of 88 years old.

Laura is proceeded in death by her parents; two brothers and four sisters; husband, Charles Piffer; husband, Jay Bair; and four children: Larry Piffer, Janice Moore, Grant Bair and Wade Bair She leaves behind one brother, two sisters, and two sons (Woody Bair and Wendell Bair); two daughters, Jean Schauster and JaNaye Williams; 25 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren and nine greatgreat-grandchildren.

Services have taken place. Farnum Holt was in charge of arrangements.

Spectrum Dance Festival celebrates its fih year Spectrum Dance Festival – presented

by Dance Initiative – expands to the Carbondale Middle School auditorium this year for its public performances (Sept.

17-18), while the Launchpad is still home base for workshops that range from African dance to tango (Sept. 16-18).

Local Color — featuring Meg Madorin, Laura Ann Samuelson, Alya Howe and other dancers/choreographers – kick off the festival at 7:30 p.m. The program includes a work in progress by Deborah Colley in collaboration with Chloe Burton, followed by several pieces.

After an intermission, local dancers return with “Vacuum” (choreographed by Alya Howe, and featuring a film created

by Krysia Carter Giez, the Vacuum Choir, a poem, solo performance and duet.

On Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m., six members of the Denver-based Grass Roots Project perform “Beautiful Human Lives,” choreographed by street-dance and noted hip-hop artist Rennie Harris. (Note from festival organizers: This piece is culturally rich, touching and beautiful, but may not be suitable for young children). “Beautiful Human Lives” is inspired by personal abuse Harris witnessed as a child, and other events growing up in Philadelphia.

Harvest Fest features “A Taste of Carbondale” At Sustainable Settings Sopris Sun Staff Report Sustainable Settings has big plans for its annual Harvest Festival celebration, and is joining forces with “A Taste of Carbondale: Meet the Producers, Makers, and Purveyors” to spotlight the area’s emerging agri-tourism industry, according to a press release.

Harvest starts at 10 a.m. on Sept. 17 with presentations and open dialogues, bringing together farmers and ranchers, food entrepreneurs, investors, donors, filmmakers, community organizers, and others who are collaborating to build local food systems and across the country.

“We are rethinking agriculture, telling ourselves a different story to live out, one of living in accord with Nature, said co-founder Brook LeVan. “We are researching and demonstrating farming systems based on nature’s economy.

Farming and living with ‘nature as measure’ as Wes Jackson puts it.”

At 4 p.m., attendees will dine on foods grown and raised on the 244-acre ranch that is home to Sustainable Settings, and prepared by some of the top chefs between Aspen and Glenwood Springs.

“Most of your meal on Saturday evening will come from our biodynamic gardens and fields, 1,200 feet from your plate, said LeVan, “and paired with the finest biodynamic and organic beers, wines, ciders, juices and sodas from local producers.”

Women’s Study Club brought outside world to early-day C’dale

By Justin Patrick Sopris Sun Correspondent The 1880’s and 1890’s comprised Carbondale’s birth years. Pioneers were moving to the area to strike it rich in Aspen, or at least find a job in a silver mine or downvalley coal mine, or to settle the suddenly available land in the wake of the forced departure of the Utes from parts of the Western Slope.

The roads were rocky, muddy and poorly maintained. But men with fiery ambitions came to build a better life, and if they could, they brought their wives and children.

It must have been odd indeed to fashion a semblance of domestic order from this frequently harsh valley that was far removed from what civilization lay to the east and further west. Families lived in log cabins with mud roofs, if they were lucky. While many of the men were spending lightless days deep in a mineshaft, or were off ranging cattle, or working the fields, the women were principally left to the domestic sphere, feeding and clothing the family, caring for children, and heroically transforming that log cabin into a home.

As Carbondale grew and neighbors become familiar and more abundant, women saw the necessity of creating a real community. In 1898, a handful of pioneer women founded what became known as the Women’s Study Club. The inspiration came when a Mrs. Shutt received “some literature” from North Hampton, Massachusetts, as well as a shipment of books donated by New Orleans writer George Cable. They first met at Oscar and Hattie Holland’s house (aka as the Thompson House) to explore the literary bounty and decided to make a habit of it.

The club “federated” in 1906 and became one in a network of national and statewide women’s groups, representing the “tricounty” area of Garfield, Eagle and Pitkin.

The doings of the group are tracked in newspaper clippings, correspondence and first hand accounts stored at the Mt. Sopris Historical Society. The activities and topics of exploration evolved over time, but the essential purpose of the club was for women to foster talents, friendship, social contributions, and to empower themselves through education.

Not an echo “The woman’s club was not an echo,” reads an undated newspaper account. “It was not the mere banding together for a social and economic purpose. It became at once, without deliberate intention or concerted action, a light-giving and seed-sowing center of purely altruistic and democratic activity. Women widest apart in position and habitats of life found much in common, and acquaintance and contact mutually helpful and advantageous.”

The club met weekly (weather and schedules permitting) in the homes of members.

They would discuss club business matters first, then share a meal, and afterwards move on to discussions, book reviews and presentations. Then they would entertain: plays, poetry recitations, songs and musical performances were staples. They could get funky, too. On one occasion several women staged a mock wedding and dressed the parts. On another, the club showed up for a

picnic “dressed as hobos.”

One surviving document that gives insight into the character development intended for members is a list titled “Do’s and Dont’s or Dont’s and Do’s, for Clubs and Club Members.” A sample of the extensive list includes: • Don’t be a knocker.

• Don’t think you have no work to do.

• Don’t be a grouch.

• Don’t be a slacker.

• Do get others interested.

• Do encourage new clubs and new club members.

• Do appreciate the efforts of others.

• Do be broad-minded.

Great pains Women took pains to travel great distances, and through inclement conditions, to participate in the weekly sessions. “It filled a social place in our pioneer life,” explained one early club member. “I recall only one spring wagon in the entire community, owned by Mrs. Street, who lived in Grand Valley. And that dear woman, when the weather was disagreeable, and roads muddy, would hitch the horses to the wagon and drive for miles, gathering up the women and bringing them to the club.”

Another account describes four women from Rifle attempting to travel to Carbondale. The train was late into Glenwood, and the train to Carbondale did not wait. So, they hired a coach and slogged the additional 12 miles to a glorious reception.

Clearly, these frontier women derived immense satisfaction from the Study Club, and there are accounts of older women remembering fondly and with astute clarity their youthful engagement in club life.

There is not much evidence illuminating the level of approval—or disapproval—that husbands or other male contemporaries might have felt towards the Women’s Study Club. But one woman, quoted in an undated article, stated “Clubwomen, not so very long ago, were generally thought of in the terms of the cartoonists who made so much fun at their expense … It was accepted fact brooking no discussion, in those days, that the woman who had time to gad about attending club meeting had no time for her home or family….”.

Presumably, this woman is referring to the earlier years following the club’s inception. Women were two decades from achieving suffrage and were not popularly accepted as equal members of society, so one might conclude that men frowned upon the

club. But it is hard to tell. Because meetings were held in the homes of prominent women, married to prominent men, one could reasonably conclude that their husbands at least tolerated, but perhaps even enthusiastically supported, their pursuits.

Furthermore, the Women’s Study Club accomplished many beneficial tasks. They pursued welfare projects, raised funds for scholarships and war bonds, organized and distributed donations, strategized to build schools, and the list goes on. Men must have recognized these worthy achievements.

Or perhaps club members led their husbands to believe they were meeting to sew quilts and sing, activities which they did indeed do, but were not confined to. Did the men assume town ladies were toiling on a new bed cover, when their wives instead feverishly read books and discussed serious topics? We may not know, but we do know that club women certainly were tackling diverse and rich subject matter. A partial list

• “Some new uses of glass.”

• Sharing the details and impressions of trips abroad.

• Architecture.

• “The Machine Age in America and Its relation to Foreign Trade.”

• The Constitution.

• “Colorado Election Laws.”

• Types of homes.

• Buddhism.

• Pollution of our natural resources.

• Women in the White House.

The Women’s Study Club survived as an institution into the 1970s. It was a vehicle by which women isolated by geography and restricted by social norms could break barriers and connect to a society that was progressing rapidly as the 20th century unfolded. Early women of Carbondale were as much pioneers of feminist self-determination as they were of this harsh and beautiful valley.

Maybe the town hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been blessed with decades of continuous coverage from a single newspaper, but it is fortunate the following newspapers and related publications wrote about Carbondale, starting in 1888: The Avalanche, Crystal River Empire, The Carbondale Headlight, The Spud City Sentinel, the Roaring Fork Review, The Roaring Fork Valley Journal, The Carbondale Echo (the Roaring Fork Valley Journalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s centennial celebration issue in 1987), The History of the Crystal River, The Colorado Rocky Mountain School 25th anniversary newspaper (1979), El montanes, La Voz del Pueblo, and The Sopris Sun (founded in 2009). The vintage newspapers are hanging up on a wire display in the front of the library through September. They are mostly photo-copies, so readers and history buffs can just take them down and look at them. The exhibition was mounted by the Mt. Sopris Historical Society and displayed in collaboration with the Carbondale Branch Library as part of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;American West as Living Spaceâ&#x20AC;? series. The library is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; and closed on Sunday.

Donna Phelps The Roaring Fork Pickleball Club held its annual tournament last weekend at the Darien Tennis and Pickleball Courts in Carbondale. The tournament was one of the last stops this year on the Western Slope Alpine Bank tournament circuit.

Pickleball is reportedly the fastest growing sport in the U.S. It's a game that appeals to and can be played by folks of all ages. The game, which is played on a shortened tennis court, is fast, fun and intense. A lot of players say it’s also “addicting.” You’ll note here that some players have good form, some have style and a few have both.

Update on Nepal quakes; helping Banpale village Founded by escaped slaves

By Hamilton Pevec Special to The Sopris Sun As you may remember in April and May of 2015, two very big earthquakes hit Nepal and destroyed buildings, infrastructure and many lives. The Roaring Fork Valley community raised a lot of money to help pockets of the country to recover. I was living in Nepal and am one of the people who received some of these donations to fund relief work in the hardest hit remote areas. Tough questions arose: • Who receives help • Who am I to judge?

• Is it better to help as many people as possible a little or help fewer people a lot?

The answering process carries a weighty emotional burden. This story will describe our volunteer work to rebuild after we addressed the initial emergency lifesaving needs I recounted in this paper as they happened in 2015.

Volunteer team Our volunteer team, made up of Devika, my Nepali wife, and Shyam, her brother, plus two Iranian organic farmers, two French survivalists, and I managed to traverse many miles of landslides and rubble to get tarps, blankets, food, water and other necessities into the Gorkha, Dhading and Lamjung villages in the days and weeks following the earthquake.

We received thousands of dollars from people all over the world to help the earthquake victims rebuild their lives, because people knew we were living in Nepal and unharmed, and able to quickly respond. We wanted to spend the donations wisely and do right by the donors, and even more importantly by the people needing help. Once the earth quit shaking, we were tasked with choosing where to help villagers rebuild and how to rebuild.

Mountains upon mountains Most of Nepal, excluding the southern plains bordering India, is made up of mountains upon mountains. A mountain village in Nepal sometimes has only a cluster of families and sometimes 100 or more.

Consider the village of Banpale, located in the southern Gorkha region between Kathmandu and Pokhara. This ninehouse village nestles onto a hill ridge surrounded by jungle.

A black-top road, a rarity in Nepal, runs right through the middle of Banpale, but they only have one water tap to share with about 100 people. Despite having easy road access, Banpale did not receive any earthquake relief help from any big aid organization; the surrounding villages did. My group first went there about two weeks after the first quake and immediately noticed they needed emergency supplies. Over the next year we went back to Banpale four times. Meeting and

The village was founded when four brothers escaped slavery, and homesteaded the forested ridge. They took care of the jungle and used it to build their homes. Some years later a greedy regime led by their old master tried to kick them out, and reclaim the people as property. But one brother argued that by escaping his cruelty and looking after the forest, they earned their right to stay. The conflict escalated into violence in a one-on-one fight between the middle brother and their former owner. The dispute of land, slavery and ownership was settled when the middle brother won the fight. The locals agreed and the name reflects their right. “Ban” means forest, and “Pale” means security. Banpale means the keepers of the jungle. All the villagers descend from those four brothers.

Getting to know Banpale people over the year following the quake, it became obvious they were perfect candidates for our help. The village is small with easy road access; the people are all relatives; they are poor and neglected. and not likely to receive aid from anyone else.

Above all they need the help!

Social fabric We knew that protecting the delicate social fabric of a community is important and very hard to do. If only

one family receives help in a community, that family can be ostracized. With Banpale village, we had an opportunity to help an entire community, with less risk of causing social damage. This kind of success cannot be measured in dollars or words or anything abstract. It is measured in cozy living rooms, where families sit around the fire with their neighbors and remember the time the earthquake hit. We chose to help the people of Banpale village — a lot.

This is part on of a two-part article on rebuilding in post-earthquake Nepal. Part two will describe rebuilding the shattered homes with the Bonpale villagers.

Hamilton Pevec, a documentary film maker, moved from Carbondale to Nepal about five years ago to marry and help Devika, his Nepali wife, build her yoga retreat center above Phewa Lake in Pokhara, Nepal. He and Devika have just come to live in Carbondale with their baby “earthquake” daughter, Isa. Devika has brought her traditional Nepalese healing skills with her to enrich the Carbondale community by giving lessons in Nepali baby massage, Nepali cooking, Yogic self healing and Devika’s unique form of yoga. They live with Hamilton’s grandfather, John Lawyer, and form part of his care team.

Memoirs om page 14 Rockies was “raw,” Brook told me. Raw and very rich, because of beaver, starting thousands of years ago, that dammed and flooded the Crystal River Valley, turning it into fertile, naturally organic mountain soil — “real” gold some would say.

Many a family story told under the roof of the Thompson “Big House” was of how, as early as 1876, Myron and Alex not only got along, but ran around with the Utes. Father and son were aware and understood the potential of the land.

“The Utes were friendly, traded with them, shared their hunting grounds, food, water and edible plants,” Brook related.

He remembered being told by a member of the Thompson family, “There was a bridge of time when the Utes and whites got along.” That important bit of knowledge was why, after the Utes were driven out of their homeland, the Thompson men knew right where to be.

The side-by-side Thompson and Thompson ranches eventually produced some 22 train car loads of potatoes from their land when the railroad used to stop at the neighboring Sewell Ranch depot.

1949 on Brook explained how the Mautz family bought the ranch (where Sustainable Settings sits) from the Thompsons in 1949 and carried on the farming and dairy production for which Angelina Mautz became famous until 1992 when the ranch was

sold. Folks all around appreciated the sweet, fresh milk from Angelina’s cows.

The land lay fallow under a developer’s plan for eleven mega-houses from 1992 until Pitkin County Open Space intervened. Rose, Brook and their Sustainable Settings concept came along and brought the ranch back to life in 2003.

They have since established a small-scale A-2 Raw Dairy.

Sustainable Settings does a brisk business with farm-raised poultry, eggs and turkeys. Most turkeys are sold out by August for Thanksgiving each year. By June, all but a few birds are strutting about the grounds with a tag. (And here the few unadorned are wondering, “Why don’t I have a sparkly necklace like Myrtle’s?”)

There is now a nearly half-acre greenhouse and garden, complete with garden shed and manager. There are more and bigger coops in the yard with space for laying hens, ducks, geese and turkeys to do their walkabouts. Newly planed boards were lined up next to the ancients to make several more corrals.

Brook brought me up to date on all the improvements. “Maybe after 17 years, we have sustainability,” he started out. “Today, we’re just here trying to build an island of health in a sea of toxins,” he concluded.

Rubberneckers OK, I confess. I’m one of those rubberneckers who slows down a bit on a fairly

regular basis when driving by Sustainable Settings Ranch. I’ve noticed a composite of different animals rotating out front, road side. “Besides being a really a cool picture postcard sight to see, what is its purpose?” I have to ask.

“It is called a rotational grazing system,” Rose explained. “We start with large animals eating the grasses, starting with the dairy — they get the best for their milk — then sheep after. They eat what the cows don’t. Then [we] follow with the poultry, not our laying hens but meat birds and turkeys; they dig through the manure deposits, go through and eat the bugs, lay their manure down and all goes back to the soil. After a few weeks, grasses come back up, and we bring the animals back for rotation.”

Back to the future Northern Ute elder Clifford Duncan frequently visited Carbondale and surrounds in recent years. An internationallyrevered spiritual elder based in Roosevelt, Utah, Clifford enjoyed his visits to Sustainable Settings Ranch, praised the work Rose and Brook were doing and presided over a number of ceremonies there, blessing and honoring the peoples and lands of the Crystal River Valley.

Clifford would always end his talks with this: “We are the same, you and I. Once this land belonged to our people.
