CMP opens BMX track The Crown Mountain Park and Recreation District in El Jebel inaugurated its new BMX bicycle track with a sanctioned race on Sept. 7.

The track – built entirely with donations, sponsors and volunteers – is a mix of single, double and triple jumps, a tabletop jump right before the finish line, plus a rhythm section along the third straightaway, berms and starting hill. “Most of our riders are new to the sport,” said a CMPR spokesman.“It’s designed to challenge those who want it but will not hurt you if you’re new.”

Zoning 103: Updating the Carbondale zoning code EDITOR’S NOTE: Carbondale is updating and consolidating its zoning code and other land use regulations into a unified development code. This is the third installment of a series of articles written by the Carbondale Planning and Zoning Commission explaining the basics of zoning. The previous two articles are on the town’s website www.carbondalegov.org.

The first question we are asked by trustees and citizens alike is: “Why do we need to rewrite the zoning code?” Here’s why: The current zoning code has not been updated in over 20 years. In that time, there have been a number of individual ordinances (at least 35 amendments since 1993) that have amended the zoning code to a point of conflict. This conflict is contrary to healthy development in that it is difficult for developers and town officials to understand what is permissible and what is not.

The town will benefit from a proactive code that allows for growth and development to occur in a form and location that is consistent with town values.

The second reason to rewrite the code is to evaluate the town with a “community character”approach to regulation.This will identify strategies for individual zoning districts, including the application of performance standards in some areas and, potentially, form-based standards in others.

Another reason is to create adaptive web-based tools that reflect code changes more quickly. In a paper-based system, there is a time lag between the adoption of an ordinance and that when accurate requirements are available to developers.

Finally, an updated zoning code will allow the town to incorporate additional elements of sustainable community development. The Unified Development Code (UDC) will include measures that address: renewable energy, water quality, multimodal transportation and more.

Unequal impacts It is important to note that the zoning code rewrite will not affect all neighborhoods equally. You should be prepared to come to the public meetings with your feedback. The best way to prepare is to read the 2013 Comprehensive Plan, which the Board of Trustees adopted to set the direction for future land use decisions in Carbondale.

Chapter 4 of the plan includes detailed plans for all neighborhoods. The future land-use map illustrates the future land-use plan designations, which sets the general direction of the development of land in the future. The future land-use map is advisory in nature, laying the foundation for making changes to zoning in the future, but it is neither zoning nor a zoning map. You can find this map in Chapter 4 of the Comprehensive Plan, which is available on the town’s website at www.carbondalegov.org.

Next step What’s the next step? There are a couple of ways to be involved in the zoning code rewrite. First, there will be public meetings and/or workshops. Be on the lookout for topics or neighborhoods that interest you.

Second, there will be a project website (linked from the town’s website above) that will provide updates, meeting dates and drafts of the code when they become available. The entire process will likely take a little over a year, with portions of the process having more public involvement than others.

We hope you have learned a little about zoning, the types of zoning and the reasons to rewrite the zoning code. Keep an eye out for upcoming events about the zoning code rewrite. Time for some real growth controls

By Patrick Hunter Maybe Brad Hendricks, former Carbondale Trustee, had it right: “uglification.” What he meant was that keeping our town looking as crappy as possible would stop growth.

At that time Main Street had broken-down cars instead of planters and fancy curbs and crosswalks. It worked for a while.

But the town fathers didn’t listen to Brad. They pushed and pushed and got things prettied up. New buildings went in, old ones got spruced up, and a “restaurant row” sprung up.

River Valley Ranch and Aspen Glen were a main impetus for new restaurants. We got a good jolt in the late 90’s when The North Face temporarily moved its headquarters into town. The Highway 82 four-laning brought to town many immigrants from upvalley.

From the time Brad and I were on the Carbondale Board of Trustees in 1993, to the 2010 Census, the town population doubled.

State forecasts project our population will double again by 2032. Carbondale would have more residents than the current population of Glenwood Springs. So, in 2032 will Carbondale look like today’s Glenwood Springs? Could be.

The Colorado Department of Highways (CDOT) is pretty convinced that traffic will substantially increase. Their new Highway 133 access control plan has a bunch of new access points, and roundabouts for developments that aren’t even there yet. This will make Carbondale just one more town with a highway running through it.

Recent announcements from Carbondale officials voice a great concern that highway improvements will make the town a “divided” community. Therefore, they opted for more cross-through intersections. I’m not sure I follow that logic; nor do I think their goal is actually feasible. Should we start planning the Highway 133 bypass now? Glenwood has been talking about a bypass for decades. What they have is a slowly moving “parking lot” twice a day.

The new Carbondale Comprehensive Plan says this: “Carbondale will maintain a balance between growing and evolving economically and maintaining the small town character that attracts visitors, residents and employers and keeps businesses in town.”

Notice the words “will maintain.” With the help of the tooth fairy that may actually happen. Other interesting words are “small town character.” In other words, Carbondale is not going to remain the small town it is now, but rather, with “balance,” grow into something else -- something with “character.”

1993 In 1993 my wife and I moved into a tiny old house on Main Street that had been occupied for decades by one of old Carbondale’s real characters. For 10 years we lived in this place that reminded us of Andy Griffith and Aunt Bea’s Mayberry. Then growth drove us out.

But for many, especially more recent immigrants, there has not been enough growth. A frustrated lady at the City Market pharmacy exclaimed as she left (empty handed) in a huff: “If we had that NEW City Market I wouldn’t have to wait like this.”

Thanks for Hazardous Day Dear Editor: I just wanted to thank the Carbondale Department of Public Works employees who helped out with the annual hazardous waste day on Sept. 7. What a thankless job, especially with temperatures soaring and little if no shade. I can't think of anything worse than spending your day off going through old paint, oil and other unpopular and environmentally unfriendly products.

I so appreciate their efforts and am deeply grateful that I no longer have to deal with old,

useless half empty cans of paint taking up unnecessary room in my house.On behalf of Carbondale and the surrounding communities who took advantage of this day rather than tossing their items in the trash, thank you so much.

Must testing in the schools shape the education system?

By Debbie Bruell Sopris Sun Correspondent At the same time that discontent with U.S. educational policy is mounting, our local school district is preparing for a visioning process for the community to explore and define what we want locally for the education of our children. The Sopris Sun is running a series of articles that addresses some of the key concepts and issues at the center of national and local discussions about educational reform. This article is the fourth and final article in that series.

From Bush’s No Child Left Behind legislation to Obama’s Race to the Top grant program, standardized testing persists as the primary measure of a school’s success and the focus of our nation’s education policies.

Punishing or rewarding schools based on their test scores continues to be our government’s key strategy for attempting to improve schools.

This narrow focus on testing has led to some negative consequences for many of our nation’s children. For example, raising test scores tends to become the driving force behind instruction at the expense of goals such as engaging children’s natural sense of curiosity, and important elements of children’s education tend to fall by the wayside simply because they’re not tested on standardized tests (such as social-emotional development, creativity, teamwork skills).

Is it possible to avoid the negative consequences often associated with high stakes standardized testing? While testing dominates our education policies, does it have to shape the kind of education we give to our children here in Carbondale?

Re-1 administrators are quick to say it does not.They believe our schools are open to possibilities in spite of federal mandates relating to testing. School Board President Matt Hamilton told The Sopris Sun that there are examples across the country of innovative and inspiring public schools which are thriving in spite of current educational policies.

Re-1’s Chief Academic Officer Rob Stein is optimistic that once the community goes through the process of identifying what it is we want and need for the children of our community, we will find models of other public schools who are successfully achieving similar kinds of outcomes.

What if we create educational programs that truly engage and inspire students, and our test scores go down? Re-1 administrators are confident that we won’t be faced with this kind of dilemma. Instruction that truly engages, challenges and inspires our students, Re-1 administrators say, is the best way to achieve high test scores.

mary goal is to ensure that our schools are providing high-level, rich and engaging learning experiences for all of our students.

More specifically, Holt explained, the district is working to incorporate more project-based learning, interdisciplinary learning, learning that is connected to students’ interests and to the world outside the classroom, and to focus on 21st century learning skills (such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and creativity). According to Holt, this approach to learning is not only what’s best for kids, it’s also the instructional approach which will result in the highest test scores.

“What you want to avoid,” Holt explained, “is focusing the learning experience on training kids to do well on the tests.”

Holt will be overseeing the four staff members of the Instructional Support Team.

He outlined three key tasks that this team will undertake in order to reach their goal of creating rich and engaging learning experiences throughout the district: • Communicating with teachers about the importance of project-based, interdisciplinary, authentic learning experiences that focus on 21st century learning skills and how this approach can result in better test scores than “teaching to the test.” Holt noted that the communication effort to teachers will also include addressing teachers’ fears that if their students score poorly on standardized tests it will put the teacher’s job at risk. According to Holt, that fear is based on misperceptions of the potential impact of the new teacher evaluation legislation, SB 191.

• Provide the professional development that teachers need in order to implement this type of instruction effectively. Recent surveys

of Re-1 teachers have found that teachers have a strong desire for more in-depth and consistent professional development.

• Find ways to provide teachers with the time they need to provide this type of instruction effectively. Holt told The Sun that one of his goals is to “reduce the amount of time that teachers have to engage with the gradebook (i.e., recording assessment scores) and increase the time that teachers have to engage with kids.”The district has decreased the number of items that teachers are required to report on for each student, Holt explained. His team is working on finding ways to give some teachers more planning time as well.

Optimistic As skeptics point out about the new Common Core standards, are our administrators just “saying all the right things” or is real change possible?

Hamilton insists that the district’s commitment to making positive changes is not just empty words. He points to the district’s decision to transform Glenwood Springs Elementary School into an Expeditionary Learning (EL) school starting this fall.

By committing to the EL conversion process at GSES, the district has not only committed significant resources toward an intense teacher-training process, it has also committed to identifying non-essential tasks that can be taken off of teachers’ plates so that teachers have sufficient time to plan and implement in-depth learning projects.

Hamilton explains that the district is embarking on the visioning process with the idea that “the canvas is blank” and the district is eager to build a new vision for our schools together with the community. “Everything is

on the table,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton clearly has high hopes for the changes that can result from the visioning process.“Schools should be about capturing a child’s imagination,” he said. “When your child comes home from school is he excited to tell you about what he learned that day?

Is he excited to go back and learn more tomorrow?”

Similarly, Hamilton said, we need to be asking teachers, “At the end of each day do you feel like your creativity has been captured and you’ve been able to make the most of your energy and passion for the kids?”

Hamilton acknowledges that public schools have a tendency to jump around to new initiatives, trying new approaches every couple of years. However, he said the district is committed to establishing a new vision and strategies that it will commit to for the next 5 to 10 years.“If the community wants input into that vision,” Hamilton said, “now is their chance.”

Administrators and board members are quick to note that the visioning process would not have been possible if voters had not passed the mill levy ballot question in 2011. “We’re blessed to be in this situation and we ought to take advantage of it,” Hamilton said.

The district’s visioning process will kick off with community meetings in Carbondale, Glenwood and Basalt from mid-September to mid-October. The exact times and locations will be announced soon on the district’s website: www.rfsd.k12.co.us.

Engaging students Rick Holt, who had been Carbondale Middle School’s principal since 2008, was hired last spring for a newly created district position: Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. Given people’s association of the term “assessment” with standardized testing, the creation of this position was met with some criticism from parents.

According to Holt, the idea that his position is focused on analyzing test scores is a misconception. Instead, Holt said, his pri-

Susy Ellison: Out to sea, be back later

Carbondale resident Susy Ellison is heading out to sea.

Way out.

A science teacher at Yampah Mountain High School in Glenwood Springs, she is one of 25 teachers from around the nation selected by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) for its Teacher at Sea (TAS) Program, which “gives teachers the chance to participate in cutting edge science, on the ocean, working side-byside with world-renowned scientists,” according to Jennifer Hammond, the program’s director.

NOAA’s stated mission is to understand and predict changes in the earth’s environment, from the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun, and to conserve and manage our coastal and marine resources. NOAA received over 250 applications for the 25 spots in the 2013 TAS program, which is now in its 23rd year.

Ellison was scheduled to sail from Kodiak, Alaska, on NOAA Ship Ranier on Sept. 9, to assist with research on a 19-day hydrographic survey charting the ocean floor in the Gulf of Alaska. She is the fifth teacher to work on the ship since it embarked on this project in May. It will not be her first such teacher-researcher trip, however. She participated in a similar project in Antarctica 10 years ago and in the Arctic in 2011. She had been thinking about applying to TAS for years, and finally decided to do it.

“One of my passions is polar science - along with environmental literacy, my real passion,” she stated in our interview, adding, “I don’t know anything about the ocean really. I know a fair amount about water, but not specifically about the ocean. It’s big and deep and it’s 71 percent of the planet, and what do I know?

Nothing, really. So I figured I should go while I have the opportunity.”

Ellison may be relatively unfamiliar with the ocean floor, but she is no stranger to science. Not only has she been teaching it for 20 years — three in Carbondale to fifth graders, and the last 17 as the science teacher at Yampah — she was immersed in it growing up. Her father is a microbiologist, dentist and oral biologist, a trailblazer in his field who taught at the University of Buffalo for many years. Her mother was an oncologist.

Before heading west, first to Utah and then to Colorado, Ellison earned a degree in wildlife biology from Cornell University. She worked at Canyonlands and for the Forest Service in Durango before landing a job at ACES (Aspen Center for Environmental Studies) in 1985, which is what first brought her to the Roaring Fork Valley.

At Yampah, she teaches all flavors of science: life science, physical science, earth science, and a whole collection of experiential and environmental classes she refers to as “outdoor stuff.” She’s even taught home economics on occasion.

Ellison said she’s especially excited to be undertaking this journey while school is in session and her students can participate in various ways from afar.

When asked what she hopes they will gain from her selection as a Teacher at Sea, she responded, “The top thing is for them to see that you don’t stop learning. There’s a big world out there. You should go check it all out.”

She is currently teaching a class on landforms and mapping. She hopes her explorations in this sea-floor mapping project will inspire her students in their own work. “It’s a cool combination, mapping: it’s science, it’s math, it’s social studies.”

She also hopes her trip will demonstrate to students in a tangible way that math and science have an important place in the world. “Making their learning relevant through my own hands-on experiences is vital to getting students excited about

And, finally, she wants to encourage other teachers to apply to TAS. “They don’t have to be science teachers or high school teachers — they can teach PE, art or even kindergarten.”

hill on a warm spring day. It keeps getting bigger faster. Everything that is done to make the snowball easier to roll guarantees more growth. Some of the growth factors up and down the valley over the decades: affordable housing, highway improvements, incentives for developers (like allowing taller buildings), growing the ski areas, bigger schools, bigger hospitals, bigger airport runways for bigger planes, social services, new theaters, new shopping centers (especially with big box stores), bigger bus system, and many more.

The problem is that each increment is looked at in isolation. Aspen doesn’t see how 127 new price-controlled units on its outskirts are actually going to exacerbate every single problem they deal with on a daily basis. And in a myriad of ways, the development pressure will be put on not just the Aspen community, but all the way down the valley. And consider the expansion of Valley View Hospital, not only in Glenwood, but now into Carbondale and Basalt.

Medical treatment facilities require massive amounts of supporting infrastructure. And, by the way, the cost of treatment will go up, not down.

In my previous column, I raised the issue of “limits to growth.” It is time to establish real quantified limits In my view. It has never been more important.

Rams notch wins across the board

The Rams have a chance to keep their winning spree alive when they host Delta at 4 p.m. on Sept. 12.

Roaring Fork High School’s official Homecoming is still two weeks away, but the Rams are already proving their ability to seize the home field advantage, with all three teams picking up wins in the last week.

Soccer fans broke in the new grandstands at the Carbondale Middle School playing field on Sept. 5 with a 3-0 victory over Moffat County, then proceeded to thump 5A Durango on Sept. 7 and beat Aspen on Sept. 10.

Ram footballers contributed their win over Aspen under the Friday night lights, while the volleyball girls recovered from their loss at Coal Ridge by trouncing Hotchkiss.

Soccer With the old visitor’s grandstands lying in the Middle School parking lot,Aspen Skier fans helped fill out the main stands on Tuesday night, with the threat of rain dampening turnout for a sport that already trails other sports in attendance.

The Rams seemed unperturbed, however, by the near-even mix of Roaring Fork and Aspen cheers. Lalo Clemente scored the first goal of the night near the end of the first half, then Ben Carpenter started off the second with a point of his own.

Aspen responded with back-to-back scores, bringing the game to a tie with 31 minutes to go. After that, the Rams took off, with Carpenter adding two more goals and Gustavo “Gus” Oliva contributing a header to finish the game with the Rams on top 5-2.

As the players left the field, Roaring Fork coach Nick Forbes seemed elated. "I’m feeling very good about the team,” he told The Sopris Sun, “We’ve got a group that has shown they can play a full game.”

The Rams stand at 3-1 for the season, although none of the wins have been league games. Still, all wins are important.

Forbes cited the Sept. 7 win over Durango (1-0) in particular.

Football What’s sweeter than opening the season with an away victory over one of your bitterest rivals, following it up by defeating another rival for the first time in years on your home field?

That’s exactly how the Rams finished the opening games of the season last Friday night.

Still high from their 13-0 win over the Basalt Longhorns on Aug. 30, Roaring Fork set to work on the Aspen Skiers, who came out on top in every major match up from 2007 to 2012.

The Rams took an early lead in a steady drizzle when Tanner Nieslanik scored his second punt return touchdown of the season, but the Skiers didn’t go down easily.After trailing for the first three quarters, Aspen kicked a field goal to tie the game at 17-17 with 8:32 left in the fourth quarter. They then delivered a punt that left the Rams with 80 yards from the goal line.

Roaring Fork made slow progress, however, and responded with a field goal of their own with 2:23 left in the contest.

Aspen moved the pigskin down field, running the ball out of bounds when possible to stop the clock, but with less than a minute left in the game, the Skiers were forced to try for overtime with another field goal. The night’s rain took its toll and the snap from center slipped, leaving the Skiers scrambling to make the best of a busted play. For a moment, with most of Roaring Fork’s defense still in place to block the kick, it looked like the Skiers might snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, but an improvised pass fell incomplete, leaving the Rams a 20-17 win.

Roaring Fork is now 2-0 for the season and will travel to Monte Vista for a 7:30 p.m. game on Sept. 13.

Coal Ridge turned the tables with a 3-0 win over the Rams to continue their undefeated season. Roaring Fork then came back strong, sweeping Hotchkiss at home 25-18, 25-16 and 25-15. That win brings the Rams to 3-4 for the season.

Roaring Fork will host the 5-1 Olathe Pirates at 3 p.m. on Sept. 14. Fans should keep an eye on senior Taila Howe, who leads the Rams with 2.1 kills per set, as well as senior Rosa Maun and junior Emily Fuller, with 1.5 each. Maun also leads in blocks with .8 per set, while Toni Gross boasts the team’s best serving percentage at 97 percent. Josie Horn contributes a more-than-respectable 10.3 digs per match.

Early pioneer rebounds aer tragic accident (Editor’s note: This is the second of a twopart series).

Accidents were common in the 1880s, so when Ottawa Tanney’s husband, Harvey, died after his horse threw him then rolled over on him near Emma, Ottawa had to move on. She and her husband had built a hotel where the Carbondale Clay Center

By Ray is now located at the east end of Main Street. Ottawa changed the name of the hotel to the Ottawa House, enlarged it to 20 rooms and added new furniture that: “made it a roomy, comfortable and stylish stopping place” according to the Aspen Weekly Times. She was appointed postmaster in her own right in February, 1885 and sold her ranch along the Roaring Fork River in order to purchase 80 acres of land surrounding the hotel and crossroads.

By doing so Ottawa was exhibiting her own business acumen. According to an October, 1885 article in the Aspen Weekly Times: “The Rock creek metropolis is growing so fast that it has quite passed the recognizable to anyone who has not seen it in two weeks.” Shope & Lyke had opened a store, a doctor chose the spot to start a practice and open a drug store, there was also a saloon and several other buildings for stores and residences. Just down the road to the east, William Dinkel had his stage stop/store and Julius Hart operated a blacksmith shop. As the Colorado Coal & Iron Company geared up to develop its coal

lands it opened an office across from the hotel.

By June, 1886 Ottawa had secured a contract to feed passengers on the Western Stage line between Glenwood and Aspen for 50 cents a head. The hotel was also a social hub and mention is made that Mrs Tanney hosted Sunday services there, as well as gala events.

Clearly a community was growing up around the crossroads of what is now County Road 100/the east-end-of Main Street and Snowmass Drive, although in a seemingly haphazard and unplanned manner. By common usage the area became known as Satank, after the name of the post office located at the Ottawa House but no effort seems to have been made to formalize this by actually platting a town site. Then in 1886 things got confusing. In March, the Aspen papers reported that the Satank post office was moving to Rockford (F.C. Childs and Issac Cooper's new town at the mouth of Rock Creek near the confluence of the Roaring Fork). The move took place in April, over the objections of the residents in and around the crossroads.

No mention is made of how Ottawa Tanney lost possession of the post office, or whether she gave it up voluntarily. Len Shoemaker writes that Cooper used his influence to engineer the switch but doesn’t say what that was.

At about the same time the Colorado Coal and Iron Company got into the picture, be-

Aspen Daily Times September 11, 1886 ginning construction on the Aspen & Western Railway and buying out Mrs. Tanney’s 80 acres, along with several other properties. Although the Carbondale Town and Land Company wasn’t formally incorporated until August, 1887, an article in the September 11, 1886 issue of the Aspen Daily Times gives the town’s actual birth date: “The citizens of the old town of Satank, Garfield County, at an enthusiastic meeting of its enterprising citizens, held last night, unanimously decided to change the name of the old location, and hereafter it will be known as Carbondale. Today

80 acres of land was staked off in city lots.”

In January, 1887 the Post Office Department discovered that the Satank post office had been moved without its permission and ordered it returned to by what was then known as Carbondale, although Childs (from Rockford) remained postmaster. On Jan. 6 the post office was installed in the Tatham & Schue store in Carbondale and C.H. Schue was named sub-postmaster. On Feb. 14 the post office was again moved to Rockford, despite more howls of objection from Carbondale residents, where it stayed put until the town was dissolved in 1904. Carbondale got its own post office on May 14, 1887, finally settling the dispute. But to further confuse matters, the Denver & Rio Grande railroad initially named its station at Carbondale “Satank,” and didn’t formally change the name to Carbondale until Jan. 1, 1888 according to the Aspen papers.

Tanney becomes brown Ottawa Tanney sold her 80 acres to the Carbondale Town and Land Company for $2,500. No further mention of the Ottawa House appears in print but, in light of subsequent events, it was probably sold at about the same time and was likely destroyed in one of the fires that swept through the east end of town in 1888 or 1889.

SUMMER CLOSE OUTS There were two annual fund-raisers last weekend in Carbondale and they had a lot in common. Cowboy Up and the Aspen Valley Land Trust’s Land Dance celebrate the town’s Western heritage, and proceeds from each go to worthy causes. This year, Access Roaring Fork was the beneficiary of all the food and fun served up at Cowboy Up. The AVLT Land Dance generates funds to place conservation easements on ranches and open space from western Garfield County to Pitkin County. Cowboy Up livened up downtown Carbondale during First Friday on Sept. 6, while the Land Dance spun country swing at the Tybar Ranch south of Carbondale the following night. If you missed either event, mark your calendar for next year because both are sure to return.

A couple of weeks later a woman identiďŹ ed in Aspen papers only as â&#x20AC;&#x153;O Tanneyâ&#x20AC;? showed up in Aspen. With her was a young boy of about 16. She claimed to be Harvey Tanneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second wife and the boy was her stepson (Tanneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son by his ďŹ rst wife, now deceased). She also claimed that Ottawa Tanney (who would have been wife number three) was never legally married to Harvey because he was never divorced from her (that being wife number two). If all that sounds confusing, the motivation probably wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t:â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oâ&#x20AC;?claimed the money Ottawa got for the land sale was rightfully hers and she had hired a lawyer to get it for her and her son.

Such scams were as common then as they are now and nothing else seems to have been heard from â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oâ&#x20AC;?, at least not in print.

After returning from Canada, the Browns took up residence on his homestead in Jerome Park, centered around the presentday intersection of County Road 108 and the road down to North Thompson Creek. The Brownsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; names regularly appeared in print until about 1906: they were frequent visitors to Aspen, were active in Carbondaleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s social circles and Delbert was involved in local government as a Pitkin County road surveyor and elections judge for the Republican party. Ottawa made news when she shot a 45pound bobcat off her front porch one morning.

been extremely active enhancing energy conservation and increasing the use of renewable energy.There isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough space on these editorial pages to describe all of the efforts.

Yes, we are using natural gas and will do so for the foreseeable future. But, there are many of us who do not look at natural gas as a non-polluting source of energy (which it isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t) or as a bridge fuel until we can eventually replace it with all renewables.

In my opinion, the increased use of natural gas takes our eye off of the real goal, which is to continue to develop sustainable, renewable, clean energy sources such as solar and wind.The supposed economic beneďŹ ts from oil and gas development contain many externalities that we

will all pay for later. These include, but are certainly not limited to, increased carbon dioxide emitted, predictable water contamination, and increased levels of ozone. Natural gas may be better for the environment than coal and tar sands oil, but it is certainly no panacea.

None of us should be embarrassed or feel guilty for defending our environment and taking a local stand. Mr. Ludlam can call us all wealthy, elitist, hypocritical snobs for all I care. The bottom line is that we must assure, as best we can, that at least our little part of this planet is preserved for the future.
