Sheep land at Strang Ranch

Most of the 300 sheep trucked in for the 2014 National Sheepdog Finals at Strang Ranch trotted down the trailer chute and into the pasture, although several decided that taking wing was a quicker way to exit. Get involved: Parks, recreation, trails planning under way

By Jeff Jackel The town of Carbondale believes that one of the ways local citizens manage and strengthen their lives and those of their families is through recreation, and that it plays an important role within the social fabric of Carbondale. Accordingly, town staff and government leaders feel that at the heart of our community’s commitment to recreation, there must be community involvement and community cooperation. Building on these two principals, the town has hired a leading national consulting firm, Design Workshop, to work with town staff, the board of trustees and most importantly, local citizens and residents to update the existing Parks, Recreation & Trails Comprehensive Master Plan that was adopted in 2004.

This master plan will be comprehensive in that it will entail community involvement and community cooperation to determine and prioritize the future development of recreation, park and trail amenities. Beginning this month, and over the next three months, the town parks and recreation master plan process will incorporate surveys from citizens, public citizen meetings, and recreational special interest group stakeholder meetings.

Recreation is not isolated from the other important aspects of our life, and its success in Carbondale will depend upon public involvement and the willingness to become engaged and adhere with the public process of completing this master plan. The plan must be driven by citizen origination, evaluation and implementation of community ideas

that come out of this master plan study. And with citizen involvement, there must be mutual respect and understanding, and the willingness to do all we can to see that the future development of parks, recreation and trails benefit all citizens at a grassroots level. We’ll need the assistance from the private sector and the public sector, the non-profit sector and the business sector, the school district, churches, and individuals and families, to all be willing to engage in a cooperative approach to understand and solve local parks and recreation issues over the next decade.

Goals accomplished The old master plan is now 10-years old and has accomplished many of its goals and objectives, but a new guiding document is now required that reflects Carbondale’s current and future operational, maintenance, and development needs of its parks, recreation and trails system. Contextual changes in the town’s demographics, anticipated substantial growth and infill, and what current and future recreational trends will be requires an understanding and assessment of the needs and values of Carbondale’s population in regards to recreation. The town’s existing and projected budgetary constraints requires an assessment and a plan of action to ensure the town’s parks, recreation programs and trails provide the level of service and quality that local citizens have come to expect while living in this premier community within the Roaring Fork Valley.

Master Plan will address services, management, maintenance and facilities in a fiscally responsible and sustainable manner. The goal is for the plan to have broad public support that reflects all socio-economic demographics by responding to current community values and priorities.

The master plan will hope to portray our natural landscape, our built-environment, culture, history, and represent the context of the Carbondale community. The plan will propose strategies customized to the town’s needs and to those of its citizens. Community partnerships will be examined and expanded where possible to play a vital role in serving the community.

Hopefully, there will be clear and realistic recommendations that come out of the plan and specific implementation strategies to guide the town’s decision-making process for maintaining, funding, and building future public park and recreation spaces. Ultimately, the master plan will provide a road map for the town to follow for the next 10 years that contribute to a high quality of life for residents and a Colorado destination for tourists to visit.

As this Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan evolves in the months ahead, please get involved. Complete the community survey, attend the public meetings and help shape the future of Carbondale. Remember, it’s “Community & Cooperation” that makes Carbondale such a special place!

Pool thanks

Dear Editor: Driving past our soon-to-be-completed Carbondale roundabout with its elevated, concrete sculpture foundation, my mind flashed onto the Aspen, Willits and Glenwood roundabouts.

All three existing roundabouts are similar to roundabouts in general. Entering the roundabout, one must be alert, decisive, attentive and a little aggressive, otherwise the very aggressive drivers could smash you or you them. Our Carbondale roundabout will be the only one with a visually prominent sculpture rising Phoenix-like from it.

A few years back while living in Aspen, I remember that during their roundabout planning process, Aspen cautiously decided not to put a sculpture in the roundabout. Their reasoning was that roundabouts are inherently dangerous, and therefore, they did not want the potential liability of a sculpture visually distracting drivers even for a split second.

Apparently, Carbondale’s trustees are far more adventurous and trusting. It will be interesting to see if Aspen’s debate and cautiousness were warranted.

Dear Editor: I would like to publicly thank Bill Kirkland and the staff at the John Fleet swimming pool in Carbondale. The people in the Jump Start and Silver Splash classes were so pleased with the quality of leadership and the care of the facilities. The pool temperature (between 81-84 degrees) was the perfect range for exercise. Even on chilly mornings the water was very comfortable.

The staff was always friendly and helpful and the dressing rooms clean and well cared for. Bill and his fleet of lifeguards always made us feel welcome and safe.

Pool thanks, two Dear Editor: This summer I once again had the pleasure of attending Jump Start at the Carbondale community pool. These water exercise classes were a great way to start the day.

Working out in the warm water helped to improve my range of motion, aerobic level and

strength. We had a wonderful instructor, Sharon. Bill, the pool manager, lifeguards, and other employees were so welcoming and capable it made the experience very enjoyable.

Our class, Jump Start, met three days a week from 8 to 9 a.m. Another class geared to seniors, Silver Splash, was two days a week from 9 to 10 a.m. The pool is here for you, the public. If you are interested in finding out more about the pool and what is offered or would like to let those in charge know what you would like, why not give the office a call at 510-1290 so they can plan for the future.

Peace Garden a “gi” to Carbondale From True Nature Healing Arts

By Nicolette Toussaint Sopris Sun Correspondent Amid laughing children and a dozen other walkers, Alejandro Rico paces with Zen-like focus. Her sandals dangling from one hand, her eyes half closed, she steps barefoot from one slab of honey-colored sandstone to another. After completing the labyrinth, Rico, a Carbondale librarian, reflects, “I wasn’t conscious of walking. I was letting the experience take me where it would go. It took me in memories to times that were deeply beautiful and important to me.”

Kindergarten teacher Janice Forbes loves labyrinths; she has walked this one and the famous Chartes Cathedral labyrinth multiple times. She says, “You assume it will be quiet, but each time, it’s different. Today, being in community is part of the experience.” Forbes notes that labyrinths are calming and healing; a Glenwood Springs hospital now has one, and more than 225 are used by hospitals across the United States.

Rico and Forbes were among more than 200 people who inaugurated the Peace Garden during last week’s Sacred Fest at the True Nature Healing Arts spa, yoga and meditation center. The garden’s designer, landscape architect Laura Kirk of DHM Design, was there too last Friday evening.

Observing the crowd, she said, “The Peace Garden is a wonderful gift that Deva and Eaden have shared with all of us. I want to make sure that we thank them for their incredible generosity and vision in creating this amazing community asset.”

The garden is open from dawn to dusk daily and is free of charge. True Nature Healing Arts is located at the north end of Third Street, across from American Legion Post 100.

includes a five elements reflexology path, a grassy yoga area bordered by a spiraling ramp of Colorado buff sandstone, a fire circle and an edible garden, in addition to the labyrinth.

Last Friday, a pile of sneakers and sandals marked the entrance to the reflexology path. “Reflexology is an ancient healing art from India,” explains Eaden. “There are more than 7,000 nerve endings in the bottom of our feet that correlate to various organs and systems in the body. If our feet feel sore walking on the path, it may be due to the settling of toxins or internal imbalance.”

Eaden demonstrates the proper method of rocking a foot over a stone and encourages beginners to “warm up” by first walking on shallower black stones for about five minutes. For maximum benefit, he says, the path should be trod for 20 minutes, three times a week. Simple at first glance, the spiral reflexology path is actually an intricate mosaic of amber, ivory, green, gray and black river rocks; it took four artisans 27 days to lay the out the pattern. In one section, golden stones form a yin/yang pattern as their axis of orientation reverse. Inspirational quotes are engraved onto larger stones.

Although one stone bearing a quote from Yoda states, “Do. Or do it. There is no try,” a few tenderfooted adults try the path tentatively, leaning on a handrail that increases accessibility for those who are older or less hardy. Meanwhile, kids pound across the stone in a foot race.

and through the chakras as you walk.” “I really did feel myself going through the different elements,” says Carbondale resident and leadership coach Gwen Garcelon. “I didn’t expect that.”

In remodeling True Nature Healing Arts’ original building, and in the garden, the Shantays feature architectural antiques from Kashmir, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Morocco, but executed their vision using mostly local materials and talent.

Walking through century-old pillars and carved wooden doors from India into the garden, visitors are greeted by a bronze Nepalese prayer wheel and scents of a garden filled with purple and green cabbage, rosemary, lemongrass, lavender and strawberry plants.

On the south side of the path that dissects the garden, a dramatic, geometric pergola covers a stone fire pit surrounded by cob couches. Warm and glassy to the touch, the jade green benches are made from cob — a mixture of sand, clay and straw — and covered with a Moroccan limestone plaster TRUE NATURE page 16

North Face Bike park opening grandly The town hosts a grand opening for the new North Face Bike Park from 2:30 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 13. There’ll be hotdogs, drinks and raffle prizes provided by local businesses.

In other items from town manager Jay Harrington’s weekly report issued on Sept. 5: • The RE-1 School District and the town’s recreation department are discussing a possible collaboration for programs to coincide with the school district’s early release program on Wednesdays.

• The Parks & Recreation Commission was scheduled to discuss park facility rules not included in the town’s Municipal Code.

• The Recreation Department’s fall brochure is inserted in the Sept. 11 Sopris Sun and other locations around town. Registration is under way at carbondalerec.com.

• The Recreation Center will be closed Sept. 12-14 for equipment and building maintenance that cannot be done while the building is open. Projects include window washing, fitness equipment overhaul, flooring stripping and sealing, climbing wall cleaning, carpet cleaning and paint touch ups.

• The swimming pool was slated for draining, winterizing and repairs the week of Sept. 8-12.

• The street crew was schedule to continue work in Barber Drive. They have been encountering a clay layer in areas where they are excavating and replacing sidewalks and curbs.

• CDOT is predicting the roundabout will be open for full movement by the end of September. The contractor is about a week

behind schedule due to wet conditions.

• Gateway RV park campground saw an occupancy level of 53 percent for the previous week. The camp host also reported a bear sighting.

• The town hopes to start work on a new eight-inch water main on Sept. 29 that will take three weeks to complete.

• The town’s online sales tax system is up and running as of Sept. 1. Numerous vendors have already filed their August sales taxes and paid online.

• The Planning Commission will consider a subdivision exemption and an infill/variance at its Sept. 11 meeting.

• Staff put together the second set of comments on the first installment of the Unified Development Code (UDC). P&Z will discuss the UDC at its Sept. 11 meeting.

• Work continues on the 2015 budget.

• A citizen reported the theft of two marijuana plants approximately two weeks ago. The citizen installed a video camera and recorded three male juveniles stealing four more marijuana plants. The three male juveniles were arrested for felony burglary and one male juvenile was also a suspect in the previously reported burglary and was issued a summons for that. In addition, he had a warrant for his arrest from the Glenwood Springs police and was turned over to them.

• Aspen Earth Moving is scheduled to commence construction on the dry well along Village Drive in two weeks.

• All the town’s plants (water and waste water) are fully operational. The screw press calibration was a big accomplishment this week. It appears that it is performing as designed.

Town grappling with bears; trash is the problem More discussion on Sept. 23

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Carbondale’s ongoing battle with garbage-eating bruins appears ready to move into a new phase, following a decision by the board of trustees on Tuesday to try to make residents more responsible in terms of putting out the trash every week.

Trustee Frosty Merriott, at the board’s regular meeting on Tuesday, suggested the town should tighten up its own regulations regarding trash pickup, and somehow exempt itself from the “two strikes and you’re out� rule that results in the death of bears at the hands of local law enforcement and Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Demanding that the town government do something to get local residents to observe the rules for putting trash out for collection — no earlier than 6 a.m. on trash day to limit the temptation for bears to go Dumpster diving — Merriott argued that the town government should step in to force residents to be more compliant and responsible.

Otherwise, he said, it is the bears that pay the price of the residents’ poor behavior, by being trapped and euthanized under the “two-strike� rule. “I think the two-strike policy is absurd,�

Merriott said, referring to the state rule that calls for bears to be euthanized once they have been caught twice coming into a town

or residential area in search of trash to eat.

While looking into the issue, Merriott continued, he learned that the town has no speciďŹ c regulations about bears, and no way of forcing residents to be more careful with their trash. “We are not nearly in a position where we can stop peopleâ€? from putting their trash out the night before, or require residents to use bear-proof trash container, Merriott declared.

“People are clueless about what it means to be living in bear country.â€? – Jay Harrington, town manager He argued for revisions to the town code to mandate ďŹ nes for violators, adding, “I do not want to see a bear in Carbondale in one of those traps just because some idiot left his trash out overnight!â€?

The problem of bears eating out of Dumpsters and trashcans, and, in some cases breaking into homes in search of food, has been exacerbated this year by scant natural food supplies in the high

country. Bears right now are desperately trying to fatten themselves for the winter hibernation months, and have become a growing problem for homes and businesses up and down the valley, including in Carbondale.

Carbondale Town Manager Jay Harrington conceded that the ordinance needs to be revised, noting, “People are clueless about what it means to be living in bear countryâ€? and seem incapable of understanding that their trash behavior can have dire consequences for bears. “This is deďŹ nitely an epic bear year ‌ more activity in Carbondale than we’ve seen in a long time,â€? Harrington told The Sopris Sun on Wednesday.

Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling said he could not give exact numbers for bears in local trash receptacles, other than to say there have been “bunches� of reports from residents of Carbondale and Satank, an unincorporated neighborhood to the northwest of the town itself.

The penalty for violating the town’s trash ordinance, Schilling said, is a ďŹ ne of up to $1,000 and a jail sentence of up to a year.

The problem with enforcement, Schilling said, is partly one of determining exactly whom to charge for putting the trash out improperly, and partly one of money. “If we were able to catch everybody and issue them summons for having their trash out early, you’d probably have 200 people coming into court,� Schilling

mused. “It could be a very big administrative nightmare.�

A proposed emergency ordinance to deal with the issue, scheduled for discussion at the Sept. 23 trustee meeting, is to be aimed at “trying to make it more administratively feasible� for the town to clamp down on trash-can violations, Schilling explained.

Town ofďŹ cials told The Sopris Sun they think Colorado wildlife staffers have trapped one bear in recent memory, but Carbondale has never had a bear euthanized.

In other action, the trustees: • Held a half-hour discussion with State Rep. Bob Rankin, R-Dist. 57, about a variety of topics. • Agreed, after a suggestion by trustee Katrina Byars, to discuss legalizing same-sex marriages in Carbondale’s municipal code, at a work session on Sept. 16. • Agreed, in principal, to release two dedicated affordable housing units in the Lofts at Dolores Park development, once an agreement is reached with developer Rick Balentine to ensure that the town’s affordable housing program gets some beneďŹ t from the project. • Directed Boulder attorney Mike Chiropolos to ďŹ le appeals of lease suspensions by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management of roughly 25 oil and gas leases in the Thompson Divide area, in keeping with the town’s stated goal of preventing oil and gas drilling in the area.

Dance initiative was founded in 2009 with a mission to promote dance and support dancers, teachers of dance and emerging choreographers in the Roaring Fork Valley community.

The Sopris Sun received a missive from the Carbondale Chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby that started “With the big People’s Climate March in New York City coming up on Sept. 21, local activists are planning a number of associated events next week in the Roaring Fork Valley.� One of activities has to do with going down to Glenwood Springs to meet the “Peoples’ Climate Train� as it passes through town at about 12:10 p.m. on Sept. 16. There will apparently be some climate change activists on board and they’ll be headed to the People’s Climate March. For details on another Citizens’ Climate Lobby activity, check out this week’s Community Briefs.

Please bring it back Someone stole the outdoor banner at the CMC Lappala Center and the school would like to have it back. The school is offering a three-credit course for information leading to the banner’s return.

Nice ride Has anyone noticed the distinguished looking gentleman who has been driving around town in a new silver BMW — convertible! — with the license plate “MOMG�? Word has it he used to drive a Bug and was very skilled at packing an incredible number of musical instruments into it.

On a related note This is probably too complicated to try to explain in word form but here goes anyway. Concerning the ongoing Highway 133 construction project: when you’re driving into town on Highway 133 from the south (i.e. Redstone), and you get to the City Market entrance, and you want to turn into City Market to perhaps buy a gigantic bag of potato chips and a two-liter bottle of diet Pepsi — take note. There is no suicide lane leading into the City Market parking lot. What appears to some to be a suicide lane is actually the southbound lane. Do not swerve over into that lane or you might not be swerving back.

It may not be an actual crime to leave unwanted television sets behind the Near New Store but it’s a really bad thing to do. The non-proďŹ t store, which donates thousands of dollars to local groups and scholarships each year, has to pay $20 each to have the TVs hauled to the nearest reclamation center (aka “dumpâ€? in the good old days). Some of the heavy TVs are left on the Near New’s front steps, right under a sign that tells people not to do it. Anyway, nobody wants to buy these old TVs anymore so Near New can’t sell them. If you have one you must get rid of, please don’t abandon it at Near New ‌ and speaking of which: Friendship Park next to the store is not meant for late night beer busts and partying.

Sept. 18 at the Orchard Sopris Sun Staff Report Each fall, the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual Business Conference & Expo. The annual two-day event combines fun and education while supporting the community, the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce and businesses throughout the valley.

This year, the Drop into Carbondale event is presented by Colorado Mountain College. The Business Conference and Expo will be held at the Gathering Center/Orchard from 8 a.m. to noon on Sept. 18.

“On average, we draw 100-plus attendees from the Roaring Fork Valley, the Western Slope and beyond,” said chamber director Andrea Stewart.

The conference attendees take part in educational presentations, visit vendor booths that feature more than 20 local and regional businesses and engage in a networking session.

Tickets are $35 and includes breakfast catered by Bonfire Coffee.

After the conference, there will be networking over lunch with Boomerang Coffee, the Pour House and White House Pizza offering discounts. Drawings will also be held for restaurant gift certificates, including The Pour House, Phat Thai, Town, and White House Pizza, and passes to the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.

Rains causing ranchers ďŹ ts; owers happy Not as wet as 2002

By Sue Gray Sopris Sun Correspondent “I feel like I’ve died and gone to Oregon.� That was my husband’s statement upon awakening to yet another rainy day in August. As it turned out, it rained over a third of the month, with total precipitation coming in at .34 inches. According to Weather Underground, the average monthly precipitation for August is .07 inches.

While most residents of drought-ridden Colorado would agree that the late summer rains are a blessing, they are a mixed blessing for local ranchers and gardeners.

Carbondale rancher Marty Nieslanik said it’s unusual, but not unheard of to have this much rain in late summer, noting that “2002 was a year worse than this.â€? He said that while the rain was good for growing hay and “greening everything up,â€? it’s been raining too much to put up (cut and bale) the second and ďŹ nal cutting of the year. “We just get started, do a little bit, and then it rains again and we have to stop.â€?

Cut hay needs to dry in the ďŹ eld before being baled for winter use by cattle and horse owners, otherwise it’ll be ruined by mold. The second cutting is usually completed by the ďŹ rst of October, but this year Nieslanik said it’ll be more like the end of that month.

Vegetable challenges Rose Le Van of Sustainable Settings Ranch south of Carbondale, said the weather this year has presented some challenges in growing vegetables. “Things grew slower because of the intense daytime heat, and the cold nights kept some things from blooming.� Le Van said Sustainable Settings hay crop was fabulous with all of the rain, but like the Nieslaniks, they have an irrigation system in place that takes care of the crops’ water needs, so the rain was just a bonus.

Despite that bonus, dry conditions that have persisted over the last few years are still in evidence. “It seemed like a lot of rain on top of the irrigation,� Le Van said, “but when you dug into the soil, it was only wet down to four inches.�

Vegetable growers in the Valley may have noticed some bonuses and problems of their own. Tomato plants liked the hot days, but they need consistent watering while they’re in the fruiting stage. If they get too much water, the tomatoes split open. Tomatoes and squash are also prone to developing fungus when their leaves get too wet.

This area is historically known for its ideal potato growing conditions. August is traditionally when potatoes stop getting watered, while the tubers ďŹ nish developing in the soil before they’re harvested in late September to early October. But with all of the rain, there’s a risk of the potatoes rotting in the wet soil.

The peonies were absolutely gorgeous this year, roses were happy, and the annuals thrived. The downside is that weeds grew like ‌ well, weeds. Those who like fresh dandelion greens are in luck, as the plant is getting a second life at the end of summer.

Speaking of the end of summer, the recent cool nights are already triggering the leaves to change color. So if you’ve got out-of-state

friends wanting to visit during peak fall color, better tell them to book their ight now.

There have been rumors and signs of an early winter ‌ a harsh winter ‌ a long winter. But there’s just as much possibility for another heat wave, or so-called Indian Summer.

Nieslanik related that the “old-timers say after the ďŹ rst frost hits or there’s a dusting of snow on Sopris, the weather will straighten upâ€? again for a while. But, he warned; “only fools predict the weather.â€?

Community Briefs board seats up for grabs The RE-1 School Board has two unexpected vacancies, after Richard Stettner and Terry Lott-Richardson moved out of their respective districts, although both reportedly still live within school district’s boundaries.

The upshot? The district is accepting applications to fill the vacancies in District A, which includes a significant portion of Carbondale, and District C, which includes parts of Missouri Heights. The application deadline for candidates is Oct. 10, with interviews slated for Oct. 13. On Sept. 24, the school board will hold a candidate information night from 5 to 6 p.m. before its regularly scheduled meeting. The newly appointed board members will serve for one year, then would have to run for election in November 2015. The District A position is for a two-year term and District C is for a four-year term.

Pour House celebrates its 30th; Bell reminisces

By Nicolette Toussaint Sopris Sun Correspondent Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Pour House is part of local history. It’s famous enough to be featured in a book; you can download it from Amazon and read it on your Kindle.

But nothing beats being there. The walls at Skip Bell’s Pour House are covered with memorabilia, and like Cheers, it’s a place where everybody soon knows your name.

The Pour House is throwing a street dance and barbeque this Sunday to celebrate. “I want to say thank to the town of Carbondale, to all the people who have patronized us over years,” Bell told The Sopris Sun. “I’d particularly like to thank all the people who worked here. There have been hundreds, if not thousands. A place like this doesn’t work if you don’t have good employees.”

A wall plaque commemorates one of them, Betty Boop Olsen, who died in 2007. “She was a waitress and her husband was a truck driver who drove coal down from the mine in Redstone to the load out.

One of a kind,” Bell recalls. “We had a lot of fun together. She knew everybody’s name. Good natured, but she didn’t take stuff from anyone.”

Although they are not commemorated on the unpretentious walls, plenty of famous folks have passed through, including Buddy Hackett, Mel Gibson and Melanie Griffith.

Over the years, the Pour House has become a home-away-from-home for miners, cowboys, hippies, artists and Aspen ex-patriots. Toward the back on the east wall, Bell has assembled what he calls his “Aspen Wall.” The muddied fellow in the 1984 Coors Aspen Ruggerfest photo is Bell’s friend Chuck Simpson. (“Nooo, I don’t play rugby,” said Bell.

“When I want to give blood, I go to the hospital.”)

Arriving in Aspen Bell grew up in Chicago, “followed a girl to Aspen” and tended bar at the Red Onion, Galena

Street East and other famed Aspen watering holes.

The Pour House’s tables came from Galena Street East, while the bar originally graced the Pub in the basement of Aspen’s Jerome B. Wheeler public house.

Bell eventually returned to Chicago, first attempting to work in his father’s insurance business and then starting a bar. But, he says, “I still had the hook in my mouth of the mountains” and he returned to Aspen in 1970.

Bell bought the building in 1980, initially leasing it to a restaurant called the Dusty Rose. He opened the Pour House in 1984. “We had a good business with the miners and their families. When the swing shift got off, they would grab a case of beer in Redstone and come here. So from 11-2, it was cowboys and miners.”

“There were a lot of fights,” Bell recalled.

“Every once in awhile, someone who didn’t know better would come in. They’d notice that the miners, who wore safety glasses, had coal dust around where the glasses went. It looked like they had mascara on. Some fool would say something like, ‘you sure look nice with that makeup on.’ And then the fun started!”

Although Bell broke up fights, he usually didn’t have to. “I had my rules in mind about what you could and couldn’t do, and I got a rapport with people.” The town had only a handful of police, and while Bell sometimes threatened to call them, he usually didn’t have to do that either. “Usually, if there was a fight, it was between two guys twice my size! I enjoyed talking them out of fighting. I’d tell them to ‘take it into the parking lot’ across the street. In a little while, they would be back buying each other a drink.”

Crystal eatre marks anniversary of digital conversion Returns to Aspen Filmfest next day

By Nicolette Toussaint Sopris Sun Correspondent On Sept. 25, the Crystal Theatre celebrates the anniversary of its “digital conversion campaign” and the next day, it returns as a venue for Aspen Filmfest.

Facing a dilemma that threatens thousands of small town, independent and movie theatres, Bob and Kathy Ezra, the Crystal’s owners, last year asked patrons to donate the $60,000 to $70,000 needed to replace the theatre’s 1956-model film projector with digital equipment.

The choices were stark: Go digital. Or go dark.

The clock was ticking. In 2011, 20th Century Fox and Disney both warned that they would stop supplying 35 millimeter films within a couple years, and with the digital-only release of “The Wolf of Wall Street” last January, Paramount stopped supplying 35mm film.

Other studios are following suit; the change will save them millions of dollars. It costs about $1,500 to make and ship a 35mm print, compared to $150 for a digital copy.

The rock upon which The Starletts house of soul is built is none other then drummer Billy Jensen, keeping time and exploring the possibilities.

“The Starletts are on the rise and it feels like there’s no limit to their potential.”

“When you have a film, the studio wants it back promptly, so you can’t have it idle,” Kathy said. “This way, we can play it one time, then play something else. That’s the big difference. This gives us more flexibility about what we play and when.”

“One of the carrots the studios held out for the conversion was the ability to show alternative content,” Bob added. The new projector can show BluRay disks, DVDs and even images from a laptop, and that turns out to be beneficial. In August, for example, the Crystal hosted fund-raising films for the National Sheepdog Finals and for the Carbondale Branch Library, and it screened a feature on autism. The Crystal can also hold private screenings, such as showing wedding videos for family celebrations.

The Crystal’s fundraising campaign raised more than was needed for the conversion, and the Ezras earmarked those funds for repairs and upkeep.

“We did a lot of research into who to have install all this,” Kathy said.

“Everyone sells pretty much the same equipment, but installation and support is important, especially in an isolated valley like this. Luckily, campaign raised enough that we could afford to be picky.”

For support, they picked Mike Babb, who works for Mike Rowe Indie and lives out of state. “He lives in Michigan,” Bob chuckled. “But he travels everywhere. He’s in Dubai. He’s in Russia. He has a girlfriend in London …

Recently, I had to change a bulb in the Barco projector, and that turns out to be an intriguing little process. All of our equipment is networked into a laptop. Mike was sitting in an airport, and he was helping me to change the bulb. That was pretty slick!”

Stewart said the chamber expects more than 80 golfers and anticipates selling 1,000 golf balls for the drop at 1/$10, 2/$15 and 3/$20. The prizes are: $1,500 cash, a pair of Meier skis, and a package that includes one night at Avalanche Ranch and dinner for two at the Redstone Inn. Proceeds from the Business Conference, ball drop and golf tournament benefit the chamber’s continued service to the community and its more than 440 members.

CCAH, Dance Initiative, pick name for old library Sopris Sun Staff Report The Carbondale Council for Arts and Humanities, and Dance Initiative, have chosen The Launchpad as the new name for the former Gordon Cooper Library building, according to a press release.

“This will be a space for creativity and the arts to take off and successfully take flight,” said CCAH director Amy Kimberly.

The Launchpad will include CCAH’s R2 Gallery, offices and gift shop, along with Dance Initiative’s two professional-grade studios for performing arts. The Launchpad is currently undergoing construction, but will open to the public during CCAH’s SWAN opening reception on Oct. 9.

The name The Launchpad became a strong contender on the list of possible names when architect Dana Ganssle Ellis found a cartoon sketch of the astronaut, Gordon Cooper, included in the building’s original architectural plans.

“It seemed appropriate to somehow tip

the proverbial hat to Mr. Gordon Cooper,” said Ellis. “And the whole goal of repurposing the building was to provide “space” for the arts- especially the movement based arts.”

The late Gordon Cooper, a native of Oklahoma, was one of the seven original Mercury astronauts, chosen by NASA in the early 1960s. His mother and father moved to Carbondale in the 1950s, before Cooper made a name for himself as the Mercury squad’s most laid-back astronauts.

The Launchpad’s two studios will be available for performing arts businesses and organizations. Rent will be $20 per hour during peak hours and $16 during off-peak times. Studio C is enclosed, sound proof, and includes 680-square-feet of spring-loaded Harlequin dance floor, proper ballet barres and mirrors. The second studio includes an additional 1,150 square feet of spring-loaded Harlequin dance floor as well as rigging for aerial

silks. It is open for the public to view classes and rehearsals in progress.

The studios will be utilized by several performing arts organizations and businesses including Crystal River Ballet, DanceLAB/CoMotion, Integrated Yoga, and African Drum & Dancing, as well as Dance Initiative (who will be holding its third annual Spectrum Dance Festival on Oct. 18-20). The festival includes workshops and performances by nationally known dance artists such as Patrick Mueller of Control Group Productions, Chicago Footwork by King Charles, and more.

“With these two high quality studios available, Dance Initiative now has the option of bringing professional movementbased artists to Carbondale for workshops and residencies,” said Peter Gilbert, founder of Dance Initiative. “Bringing artists to the Roaring Fork Valley to educate and enrich the local dance community is one of Dance Initiatives primary goals.”

CCAH’s R2 Gallery will be moving to The Launchpad as well. The new gallery space is comparable in size to CCAH’s current location at the Third Street Center, with higher quality gallery lights and taller ceilings, which will be better suited for large works of art and sculptural installations.

“The difference in location — just off of Main St as opposed to blocks away — will mean all the difference in terms of promoting artists and selling their work,” Kimberly said. “We also feel that our presence back on Main Street is significant as we move forward with the Carbondale Creative District process, which will have significant focus on Main Street Corridor.”

The new gallery space will include a gift shop with curated goods, which will provide another economic opportunity for local artists and artisans.

The Launchpad’s operations manager, Deborah Colley, has already started taking studio reservations.

Inaugural pickleball tournament draws a crowd At North Face Park over the weekend, the machine-gun sounds of “plink, plink, plink” were added to the skateboard park’s leisurely “clickety-clack, clickety-clack” and the new bike park’s occasional grunt, as the inaugural Carbondale pickleball tournament attracted a field of more than a dozen players.

Pickleball is played with plastic, Whiffle-ball-like balls and paddles, and covers about half the area of a tennis court. The Carbondale Recreation Department held a pickleball tournament inside the recreation center last winter following several weeks of drop-in sessions. Last week’s event was the first tournament on the Darien Tennis and Pickleball courts.

Korologos goes “Out West” with landscape artists Sopris Sun Staff Report The Ann Korologos Gallery presents “Out of the West—Landscapes” through Oct. 31, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 19.

“Out of the West–Landscapes,” features the work of 24 artists, including Dan Young, Peter Campbell, Andy Taylor and Angus Wilson, according to a press release.

“Romanticized by the Hudson River School of the 19th century and chronicled throughout the expansion of the West, landscapes continue to capture the fascination of art collectors the world over,” said a Korologos spokeswoman. “While once seen as only a backdrop to portraiture painting, artists quickly embraced the challenge of capturing the natural world and landscape painting has held our imaginations ever since.”

Artistic styles showcased in “Out of the West” include realistic plein air and impressionistic work, plus traditional oils

and abstract photography. “The exhibit will have something for everyone.,” the spokeswoman continued.

Forest Service reviewing permits The Aspen-Sopris Ranger District of the White River National Forest is proposing to reissue 10-year priority use permits to 15 current outfitter and guide permit holders and is seeking public comment on their reissuance, according to a press release.

The 15 outfitting and guiding entities currently have either five-year or 10-year priority use permits that will expire on or before May 31, 2015. Each has been authorized to guide on the district for at least five years and most for as long as 10 years or more.

The permits would be reissued to the

following entities: A.J. Brink Outfitters, Aspen Center for Environmental Studies, Aspen Expeditions, Aspen Trout Guides, Aspen Wilderness Outfitters, Big City Mountaineers, Black Diamond Adventure (dba Timberline Bike Tours), Blazing Adventures (dba Blazing Pedals, Blazing Trails, and Snowmass Jeep Tours), Capitol Peak Outfitters, Don DeLise Outfitting, Maroon Bells Guide & Outfitters, Snowmass Creek Outfitters, and T Lazy 7.

Authorized activities under these permits include day and overnight horse pack trips, interpretive hikes and field classes, rock climbing, mountaineering, backcountry skiing and snowboarding, winter hut trips, ice climbing, avalanche education, guided fishing trips, hunting trips and drop camps, hiking and backpacking, outdoor education, downhill bike tours, mountain bike day and overnight trips, snowshoeing, cross country ski tours, guided Jeep tours, winter sleigh rides, and snowmobile tours.

The reissuance of the permits would not introduce any new uses on the Forest.

It would allow these businesses and organizations to provide the same services on National Forest System lands that they have historically offered.

The comment deadline is Oct. 3. Comments can be hand-written or faxed to Karen Schroyer, District Ranger, C/O Matt Ehrman, Aspen-Sopris Ranger District, Box 309, Carbondale, CO 81623. The office business hours for those submitting hand-delivered comments are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Persons commenting should include: name, address, telephone number, organization represented, if any; name of the proposal on which the comment is being submitted; and specific facts and supporting reasons to consider. Cyclocross: Born in Europe, adopted in C’dale

By Craig Fowler It was a Saturday night and just as I was finally falling asleep, my cell phone chirped.

Through groggy eyes and a fog of exhaustion, I read the words on the screen that was much too bright compared to the darkness of my room. The text read: “2morrow, 6am pic up. Pack a cowbell, horn or other type of noise maker, Wellies, rain gear, thermos with hot bev., Flask w/ somethin’ hard, and beer.”

I let the misuse of modern text grammar go and “picked” up on the words “cowbell” and “Wellies.”

My first thought was, “We’re going on a cattle drive in the rain.” I was relieved the list didn’t include a sleeping bag because thoughts of “Brokeback Mountain” crossed my mind. I was at a loss as to what I was being invited to but rather than ruin the surprise by texting to ask, I simply set my alarm to 5 a.m. and made a mental note as to where I might find at least some of the items for this mystery adventure that started way too early on a Sunday.

Five a.m. came much too quickly. I was still looking for waterproof shoes when the doorbell rang. My friend, James, stood in front of me, dressed like a cross between a deep-sea fisherman and a Broncos fan.

“You got the list? Let’s go to the races!” he declared. I’m thinking swine races. He sees my complete lack of understanding, and says “We’re going to the cyclocross races!”

A cyclocross race is a bicycle race on a

dirt (ideally muddy) cross-country course with steep hills, tight turns, wooden barriers and sometimes stairs that riders have to carrier their bikes (or hop) up and over. It’s steeplechase of the cycling world.

The race I’d packed up for was not just any race but a “US GP.” The US GP was the national race series with all the big names. It’s called something different now (kind of like NASCAR changing its name every other season or so). We parked and stuffed our backpacks full of beer and clothes.

The day began with a walk through the pit area. The bikes looked like road bikes but with wider knobby tires, mountain bike style brakes and a slightly different bike frame style. The racers were friendly and very approachable.

After a run through the pits and stopping to talk to almost everyone we saw, I realize that it was like a big family. We made our way to the course and picked a spot on a particularly tough hill. Standing shoulder to shoulder with other fans we cheered, yelled, rang our bells, and even heckled riders we knew. It was all in good fun and the riders took it with a smile. The mud didn’t dampen anyone’s mood. The racing was intense, with racers flying over barriers with their bikes on their shoulders.

Mud and ruts were navigated, sometimes cleanly, sometimes resulting in crashes. In the end, mud covered faces with huge smiles told the story.

Bike Bits

After that, I wanted to learn more about cyclocross. I came to know the history, learning that it wasn’t a sick joke designed to make one miserable but a training tool for European road racers looking to keep fit in the winter. The first races were held in city parks just like Carbondale’s North Face Park. The courses were short but exceedingly hard. Hills and barriers were put in place to slow the riders down to cut down the wind chill and promote blood flow to the feet. Lastly, hot showers and a pub were always within a short distance. Cyclocross is a combination of bikes, sweat, mud, pain, beer, cowbells, frites and heckling.

I also started racing cyclocross after that first race. I have seen the sport grow and change and win over the hearts of American cyclists like myself. Cyclocross has taken me to amazing places, hurt me, made me cry, frozen me but I always come back.

This is why I, along with Aloha Mountain Cyclery, started the Aloha Shaka Cross Series here in Carbondale. Hopefully I can show others the joys of racing or how just coming out with a cowbell and heckling or cheering is a great way to spend a Sunday.

Green beans and mushrooms: what a combo

By Kate Carei-Eakins Green beans are in season and offer a crisp vegetable sweetness to your dinner table. If you have not yet tried the local, fresh green beans, you can get them from the Carbondale Farmer’s Market. They are delicious.

I used shitake mushrooms, though you can use any kind and if you are lucky enough to have some freshly harvested mushrooms. Yum! This recipe serves two: 1 1/2 cups of green beans, trimmed 1 Tablespoon grapeseed oil 1 shallot, sliced thin 1 cloves garlic, sliced thin 1/2 cup shitake mushroom, stemmed and thinly sliced 1/2 red bell pepper, sliced thin 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon Braggs amino acid Salt to taste 1. Steam green beans till bright green. Leave a little crunch. Drain and rinse in cold water, then set aside.

2. Heat oil over medium heat, stir in shallots and garlic and cook till softened, about 2-3 minutes.

3. Stir in mushrooms and bell pepper and cook till mushrooms are slightly brown, stirring occasionally 4. Stir in green beans, cook till hot 5.
