Rage against the Monsanto “Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it.”

— Mark Twain My great-grandfather and I share two important life events: we were both born on Aug. 22 and we were both kidnapped.

In 1916, Robert Matson Perry was 33 years old and living in Oak Creek, Colorado, supervising the mine that his father owned.

Two miners ambushed him in the dark of night and took him to a remote cabin to hold him for ransom. His father, Sam Perry, sent the money from Denver by train while Sam’s eldest daughter, Marjorie, began organizing a posse to rescue her brother. (I come from a long line of outdoorsy women who frequently camp for weeks at a time, and hunt things like bobcat and bear. So you can see why I’m seen as kind of a sissy in my family, just because I’d rather curl up on the porch with a book about the wild than actually go into it).

Anyway, Robert managed to escape from his captors, killing one in the pandemonium, and immediately headed for the telegraph to inform his father to not send the cash. I can only presume that shooting one’s captor while escaping from confinement does, in fact, feel like pandemonium because I did not escape from my captors. In the end, I was simply free to go.

You see, one morning in my mid-30s I woke up to find three little triangle-shaped bruises in the shape of a triangle on the inside of my left arm. It was a strange and solid mark, but not painful nor explainable. So I let my imagination take hold and concluded

that it must be a remnant of some kind of alien kidnapping device; perhaps an extraterrestrial IV that keeps the body hydrated and breathing while routine tests are performed.

While it’s easy for me to imagine an alien species more advanced than we are, using us in much the same way we use mice in our experiments, I do understand that it’s not a favored topic in polite conversation, which is why I don’t bring it up very often. Plus, I don’t actually remember the abduction, so it’s hard to give a point-by-point recollection. But I assume that with more of a big-picture point-of-view, aliens must find it frustrating to watch us. Even though we realize our food is toxic, we continue to eat; we’re the mice for Monsanto.

Because of Monsanto: crops are contaminated, cancer centers are as crowded as airports, and farmers all over the world have lost the family farm. Then, to add insult to injury, this summer one of the most prominent think tanks in the world invited Darth Vader

into the Jedi compound conversation. (While I’m sure there’s still plenty of worthy unbiased knowledge to be gleaned at the Aspen Institute, it’s a far cry from the days of Bucky Fuller. I sure hope they don’t follow that town’s lead and turn it into the Aspen Bad Ideas Festival).

You want to hear my idea? I think all the chemically infused water and genetically modified food we are ingesting directly correlate with the mass shootings and melee in our world. There has been little to no testing on GMOs, (mostly because the FDA is Monsanto’s bitch) and for all we know, genetically modified food causes the body to attack the brain like in the book “Brain on Fire” by Susannah Cahalan.

It could explain the undeniable increase in autism and related conditions in our society in the last few decades. I’m already convinced GMOs are responsible for all the weird diet restrictions we have nowadays. Gluten intolerance probably has more to do with wheat being genetically modified than with a suddenly volatile reaction in the human body. Our parents and grandparents didn’t have nearly as many food allergies because they were eating real food. You know, back in the days when Monsanto was making Agent Orange.

The good news: Right to Know Colorado submitted nearly 125,000 signatures to the Colorado Secretary of State this summer and Proposition 105 (labeling GMOs) will be on the ballot in November.* I implore you to vote to know what we’re eating, if for no other reason, so that the aliens can see our species’ potential for generational growth! * http://www.righttoknowcolorado.org/

“Future” and “sustainability” must come together

By Patrick Hunter Have you ever sat around with your buddies “solving the problems of the world”?

That generally involves cussing out a few politicians, the referees at the last Bronco game, or any highway roundabout. If the conversation becomes more serious it might move on to taking care of war veterans, stopping the county’s attack on education, or the scarcity of good paying jobs. (I’m writing this on Labor Day.) After those subjects are worn

out, some might go on to say: “You know I’m worried about sustainability. With all these warnings about climate change and the exhaustion of resources, I’m wondering what kind of life my kids and grandkids will have.”

If you did get to thinking about a problematic future, you would be one of the few.

However, as a student in the Colorado Mountain College Bachelors of Sustainability Studies Program (BASS), I think about our future every day. Now that I am a grandpar-

ent, as of three weeks ago, I’m even more concerned. You could say I’ve got skin in the game, so to speak.

The BASS program is fairly new. It also offers a certificate. I happen to be the first to apply for and to receive the certificate of Sustainability Leadership. The whole point of BASS is to prepare people to take on a challenge. Graduating and going on to a major corporation, and running their “green-washing” programs, is not the goal. “Green-washFUTURE page 7

A bumper crop Dear Editor: Wow. What a bumper crop of gorgeous flowers adorning the corners of downtown Carbondale. Folks are asking. “How did this get started?”

Four years ago when the recession hit and budgets were cut, buying and planting flowers wasn’t a priority. Volunteers decided that they would purchase and plant flowers in the containers around town, and

Users love library; want more Strategic planning continues

By Nicolette Toussaint Sopris Sun Correspondent Bonedalians love their library, but they would love it even more if it had a fireplace. Or a coffee bar. Or both!

These were among the ideas tossed out last week at a planning meeting held for the Carbondale Branch Library.

Among the 48 people who attended the library’s brainstorming session were Joanie Anderson, her husband, and two daughters. “We came because we’re big users of the library,” she told The Sopris Sun. “My girls come looking for books and I’m in a ukulele group, so I’m here every first and third Monday. They do so many great programs here.”

After eight roundtable groups engaged in discussion and displayed their ideas on the wall, it turned out that many of the wished-for programs already existed. Library manager Mollie Honan noted that the library offers about 30 different programs for kids, along with adult programs that range from computer basics to research services. Apparently, many patrons don’t know about those programs.

Among the most often suggestions offered by the Carbondale participants were: • Longer hours, including Sundays; • A soundproofed area for kids; • Outdoor plugs for laptops and umbrellas on the patio; • Fireside chats and do-it-yourself workshops to go along with a fireplace and coffee bar; • Community forums and panels on issues like fracking, immigration and water conservation; • Concerts, in collaboration with the Aspen Music School and Festival and other groups; • More Spanish language programming.

“I love the Carbondale Library, and it’s my secret hideaway on Saturdays, so I wanted to contribute to the visioning process,” said Amy Barr. “I was especially gratified to see entire Hispanic families joining in. But I was shocked to hear that their friends are afraid to come to the library, and to learn that some people don’t realize that services are free. Some of the comments were real eye openers.”

Eloisa Duarte, a seven year Carbondale resident, joined three other adults and four children at a table of Spanish speakers. All of them wanted their community to become

more involved. “We think the library is amazing, and we want Latinos to develop a love of education and learning,” said Duarte. “We came to this event to be part of decisions of the services of the library, to be part of the community.”

The Carbondale session was the last of six meetings, one held at each Garfield County library. More 200 participants attended the meetings, which are in turn part of a larger data collection and planning process that also includes a survey. The process, like a planning process done in 2007-2008, is run by professional consultants, but this year has received quite a different response. Garfield County Libraries Executive Director Amelia Shelley noted that the 2007-2008 meetings were “scarcely attended” and enthused, “This is a great turnout.”

The smallest of the meetings was in Silt, which drew 11 participants. Carbondale’s attendance was the second largest after Glenwood’s meeting, which drew 55 people.

Those numbers reflect resurgence in the county libraries’ popularity that is paralleled by library card usage: In 2005, the Garfield County Libraries counted 6,600 active library cards; this year, the number is 45,000.

Participants at the Carbondale session, which was facilitated by Angie Davlyn of JVA Consulting, expressed enthusiasm for the Carbondale Branch Library, which opened in a new building in July of 2013 after moving from its previous location about one block away. Patrons said they like the library’s window seats, art, wifi, children’s programs, easy ordering of books via the library’s website and excellent inter-library loans. The participants, who ranged from preschoolers to octogenarians, came up with dozens of new ideas for enhancing physical facilities and extending programming.

Shelley said, “There are great ideas here, and now we need to sort through them to see what’s feasible.”

JVA Consulting, which specializes in social change work, will do some of that sorting. JVA is headquartered in Denver and has a Western Colorado office in the Third Street Center. After analyzing the community meeting and survey data, JVA will present a report and a communications and marketing plan to library management at the end of October.

True Nature Healing Arts is hosting Carbondale’s first-ever Sacred Fest from Sept. 5-7, commemorating its official grand opening.

True Nature (at 520 S. Third St.) is a world-class, inspirational environment featuring a yoga studio, tea room, petit spa, raw food bar and boutique, and peace garden, according to a press release.

Sacred Fest is a transformational weekend full of activities for adults and children, including kirtan (call and response chant), yoga, high prana foods, tea tastings, labyrinth and reflexology walks and more.

Friday night’s events are free and begin with a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m. followed by a drum circle, African dance, a life-size puppet show and live music. Free appetizer samples from True Nature’s Raw Food Bar will be featured along with a tent village for kids with face painting.

Saturday’s highlights include the Art of Tea presentation and Raw Food Grand Tasting along with a concert by Dave Stringer.

Stringer has been widely profiled in publications all over the world as one of the most innovative artists of the new kirtan movement. kirtan is an ecstasy-inducing, call-and-response form of mantra chanting that is currently undergoing a worldwide renaissance.

True Nature is the vision of Eaden and Deva Shantay, who are active owners and teachers. For the last three decades, Eaden has explored Western therapies, Native American spirituality, Eastern contemplative traditions and yoga philosophy. Music has always been an important part of Eaden’s life and he loves to share sacred chant both in yoga classes and as part of True Nature’s annual yoga teacher training. Deva is an intuitive energy guide and yoga therapist. She trained in Hatha Yoga and Integrative Yoga Therapy but has also studied Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Anusara, and Iyengar styles of yoga. She facilitates the teacher-training program at TNHA, teaches at the studio regularly and conducts intuitive energy sessions for private clients.

“Our vision is supporting individuals and the community in connecting more deeply to the true nature of self — light, love, joy, and infinite possibility,” said Eaden. “We wanted to bring yoga, meditation, kirtan (sacred chant), massage, intuitive therapy and other modalities of awakening all into one place.“ True Nature has been a part of Carbondale’s healing arts, music and sustainable food community since 2007. Sacred Fest will showcase its 2014 expansion at the new location. True Nature’s design incorporates feng shui principles, eco-friendly materials, solar panels, local artisan crafts and architectural antiquities from Kashmir, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Morocco.

Rising Crane training center takes wing

By Nicolette Toussaint Sopris Sun Correspondent The Sept. 6 grand opening of Rising Crane Training Center promises to be both a community and an international celebration. Featuring several martial arts demonstrations, a Vietnamese grand master of Cuong Nhu, several black belts from Aspen and students from ages five to 75, the opening will inaugurate a new 2,000-square-foot facility near Wine Time in Red Rock Plaza on Highway 133.

The Rising Crane fulfills a decades-long dream for owner and head-instructor Karen Bradshaw, who holds a fourth-degree black belt in Cuong Nhu. Bradshaw taught college-level exercise physiology and corporate leadership courses in San Diego before moving to the Roaring Fork Valley. She began teaching in Carbondale when friends and neighbors asked her to teach them boxing and self defense.

After her enrollment jumped from three students to 16 in the second year and 40 in the third, Bradshaw’s classes outgrew their facilities. “I was training in a space that maxed at eight students. It’s very hard to find an appropriate space here,” she told The Sopris Sun. “My students worked (out) in a middle school and in a public park where it rained. I have taken them everywhere! We moved left and right, up and

down, and they just hung in there. I’m so proud of them.”

Bradshaw hadn’t planned to open a dojo this year, but when the space became available, “it seemed a path opened up for me,” she said.

Although it’s a risk — especially for a single mom — Bradshaw said that both her martial arts colleagues and the Carbondale community have been incredibly supportive. “I have gotten calls from colleagues all over the country,” she said.

“Cuong Nhu is a very family- and community-oriented style,” she said. “Everyone knows each other, and they have all been cheering me on.”

Bradshaw was trained by O’Sensei Ngo Dong, the founder of the Cuong Nhu discipline. (O’Sensei means “founder”).

Dong started Cuong Nhu in 1965 in Hue, Vietnam. He emigrated to the United States after being imprisoned and having to escape with his four small children.

Bradshaw studied with Dong for four years in San Diego, earning her black belt and becoming close to his family. “I feel very honored that Grand Master Quynh Ngo, one of the founder’s sons, will be flying in to start off our grand opening performance,” she said.

Carolyn Parker, Ripple Effect’s founder, relocated her business from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Carbondale, according to a press release. She is a Gym Jones certified trainer, professional climber, mountain bike

racer, skier and sponsored athlete with a 25 year resume of sculpting athletes, from amateur to elite, into stronger, faster and more powerful competitors.

Parker and her trainers at Ripple Effect, all of whom are professional mountain athletes, focus on outcome-based, sport-specific training for committed individuals. “If your

main goal is to fit into your skinny-jeans, this is not the place for you. If you want to crush the Grand Traverse, take 20 minutes off your marathon time, climb two grades harder or reprogram your life after an injury or illness, we will make it happen,” Parker said.

Clients are indeed varied, from Hard Rock 100 athletes and high school ski racers, to res-

idents with heart disease and weight-management challenges.

Dave Durrance, who works out of a studio at the Third Street Center, is featured in an Anderson Ranch Art Center oneman show on Sept. 8 through Oct. 3. Intrigued by depth, space and color on a at surface, Durrance began his series, “Multiplesâ€? at Anderson Ranch during an intensive painting workshop with David Hornung, according to a press release. The works capture large-scale images on multiple canvases, luring the eye in many directions. He received his BFA in painting from the University of Denver and primarily works in acrylic.

His work is heavily inuenced by artist Herbert Beyer and other Bauhaus artists. Past exhibitions include shows at LivAspenArt Gallery, the Aspen Chapel Gallery and the Aspen Art Museum.

His father, Dick Durrance, was the ďŹ rst general manager of Aspen Skiing Company. Both of his parents competed in the Olympics. While Dave is recognized as a ski racer, US Ski Team and collegiate coach, and successful retailer, he knew art would play a signiďŹ cant role in his life. Recently, he returned to painting full-time and has participated in numerous group shows throughout the valley. An opening reception for “Multiplesâ€? will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 9.

ing” means creating an image that says your company actually cares about the environment and about human beings as opposed to making more money.

But there is a funny thing about sustainability — it’s about the future. There are other kinds of college study programs. Generally, they are about skills, especially at community colleges like CMC. You could gain skills in math, chemistry, ski-area management, nursing or veterinary science. But all of these programs assume the same thing — there will actually be a future. Or should I say, a future that has humans in it.

Generally, people don’t spend a lot of time thinking about the future. One exception is

in financial planning. Edward Jones is all about telling you what to do with the money you let them keep and charge you fees on. A Canadian was telling me how newly married couples were coming in and buying burial plots. (What’s the rush, eh?) Some folks enjoy science fiction. Some of that turns out not to be fiction; like going to the moon. In Dick Tracy cartoons people went around with communication devices on their wrists. How crazy! In the Charlton Heston movie “Soylent Green,” civilization is in dire straits. Food is short and people are given green biscuits.

That’s all I’ll say. Food for thought.

There are people known as futurists; that is, they spend their time thinking about new kinds of technology and what it might mean.

Ray Kurzweil is the author of “The Age of

Spiritual Machines” and “The Singularity is Near.” Kurzweil was very successful in inventing equipment that turns written text into spoken words for the blind. Essentially, Kurzweil believes there will be a melding of the biological with the mechanical. He also believes machines will be making themselves.

But in the immortal words of Alfred E. Neuman, “What, me worry?” Or were those the words of the previous president leading us into the Middle East? (From the White House, by the way.) Apparently Obama has said he has Alfred’s ears.

For some years now it has struck me as odd that while we have governments and their agencies, we do not have a Department of the Future. For example, the Department of Defense is constructing another nuclear-powered

aircraft carrier. We already have about 10 of these. The new USS Gerald R. Ford is projected to cost $11.3 billion. They plan to build 10 to replace the old ones. A simple question is what would $11.3 billion get us if it were invested in the nation’s educational system? Or, what would $11.3 billion do for our country if it were invested in solar energy? Maybe more solar would cut our fossil fuel use and slow down global warming.

Look for my “future” columns to get ideas about preserving our future. And by the way, I’m open to suggestions.

Strang Ranch ready for National Sheepdog championships Sopris Sun Staff Report North America’s top handlers and their canny sheepdogs will square off against wily, wild Colorado range sheep on Sept. 9-14 at Strang Ranch on Missouri Heights for the 2014 National Sheepdog championship title.

The national finals are a partnership between the U.S. Border Collie Handlers’ Association, Aspen Valley Land Trust and Strang Ranch, according to a press release. It showcases not only a premier herding competition, but the Strang family’s commitment to land conservation and support of the Aspen Valley Land Trust.

“It’s about our western heritage. That’s what’s important to me,” said event organizer Bridget Strang.

For Alasdair MacRae, the 2011 winner — the last year the finals were held at Strang Ranch — the finals are a challenging test of “the dogs’ patience, perseverance, stamina and skill. It’s a very exciting spectacle.”

For this year’s finals the sheep are fresh off the range and much more difficult to handle — and herd — than ranch sheep. “They have a lot of attitude and will test a dog and come after them,” MacRae said. “Some dogs are up to the test and some are not.”

The competition takes place over six days.

In the final event, the double lift, the dogs “gather in” a group of sheep to a central place in the field, then head out for a second group, all at breakneck speed. The dogs move the sheep through a series of gates, into a marked

area (the “shed). The dogs then sort out five sheep wearing red collars. Dog and handler then attempt to pen the sheep without spooking them.

The real magic of the sport lies in the connection between handler and dog. Sheep, MacRae said, are the dogs’ natural prey. All of their instincts push them forward into the herd. Instead, they work around and behind the herd until they have the sheep under their control. It is their uncanny ability to work the sheep with a delicate touch that moves them forward or sideways without scattering the group, until in the end the handler has them firmly within the pen and softly closes the gate. That ability comes with training, instinct and a certain amount of magic.

MacRae, who trains border collies and instructs handlers, said the dog’s natural intelligence “click” is still a special moment for him. “When that happens, it about takes my breath away. It’s never ceased to amaze me.”

Bradshaw explained that Krav Maga, which is used by Israeli police and military, is “contact combat, developing reflexive responses to threatening situations.”

In addition, Rising Crane also plans to soon add tai chi and qigong classes. The training center will offer half a dozen classes a day, and patrons can choose among them for a single monthly fee. Rising Crane will offer

adult and youth programs customized by age and experience level.

Bradshaw said that the purpose of the center’s training is to “help each individual develop their own inner power, presence and expression. Personal self-defense and fitness just result as part of the journey.”

classes because they think we will teach them to fight. We do to some extent, but there’s a strong element of character building and spirituality in martial arts as well.”

Bradshaw notes that Dong began teaching martial arts to help “the people in Vietnam who had grown up in a war-torn society that was hard-pressed to meet their spiritual needs.” Years ago, Dong said, “Without philosophy and mental maturity, a martial artist is just a trained street fighter,” and thus he wove his philosophy of self-improvement, community service, love and respect for others into the training.

Bradshaw says that Bonedalians take to Cuong Nhu exceptionally well. “There’s a lot of dance and spirituality in this town,” she reflected. “That may be why people here are better at the difficult moves. They do better with them than anyone I have seen anywhere else.”

Beginning Sept. 8, Rising Crane will offer classes in three martial arts, plus kickboxing and kettle bells, a form of weight lifting from Russia. Kettle bells, which are steel balls with a handle or “horn,” are used to perform dynamic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training.

Jackson Hole bound

While Panorama Estates residents went about their daily lives late last month on Missouri Heights, Vance Bicknell hunkered down in their midst and did what he does a few times a year.

The Denver-based wood worker camped on BLM land just off County Road 103, collected dead Gambel oak branches, brought them back to the awning-style tarp stretched over his tent, and over a period of

about 10 days created a one-of-a-kind rocking chair that he’s showing at the Western Design Conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming this weekend.

Bicknell, 42, told The Sopris Sun he calls his furniture style “neo-rustic,� after working in the 200-year-old-plus “rustic style� for several years. The main difference between the two is wood workers use mortise and tenon joints for rustic furniture, while

Bicknell uses glued pointed-ďŹ nger-splicejoints with very few screws.

His new style has turned some heads because one of his chairs won Best in Show at the Salem Arts Festival in Oregon.

Bicknell, a sixth generation Coloradan, uses only hand tools to make his chairs. He plans his trips and uses the wood available wherever he camps, including juniper outside Gypsum earlier this summer and Man-

zanita on the Oregon coast.

And if you’re wondering ‌ he checked with the BLM ofďŹ ce in Silt and it’s legal to collect dead branches. At ďŹ rst, he considered camping up Prince or Thompson creek, “ ‌ but they (the BLM) steered me up here.â€?

Volunteers are needed at the MountainPlains Museum Association conference in Snowmass Village and Aspen on Sept. 28 through Oct. 1. The conference draws museum professionals from a 10-state region including Colorado. Volunteers will be asked to help with registration, transportation, monitor sessions and aid in ancillary events like the conference closing party. In exchange, volunteers can often receive a partial or full-day admission to the conference. Hundreds of attendees from art, history, science, tribal and local museums as well as zoos and botanical gardens with paid and volunteer staffs are expected to attend the conference, according to a press release. The Forest Service is replacing a culvert on Burnt Mountain Road (east of Ruedi Reservoir on National Forest System Road 506) through Sept. 19. The construction project is located at the Last Chance Creek crossing approximately 100 feet north of the Last Chance trailhead, according to a press release.

The trail will remain open but no parking will be available on Burnt Mountain Road.

Throughout construction, a road closure order will prohibit public access on NFSR 506. “Due to noise, heavy equipment and general construction, users may wish to utilize alternative recreation trails,” said a White River National Forest spokesman. Tour Divide rider reects on 2,745-mile adventure Canada to New Mexico in 14 days

By Ryan Gannaway Sopris Sun Correspondent Imagine riding a bike down the length of the entire United States through deep-forested woods and wide open-mountain valleys, to desert mesas and alpine meadows. Montana Miller did just that on a mountain bike.

Miller recently raced in the Tour Divide, the ultimate endurance mountain bike race.

Did I mention he completed the race on a single-speed bicycle? To give the non-bicycler some perspective, riding mountain passes on a single speed bicycle is comparable to well, nothing because it’s pretty difďŹ cult.

Miller grew up in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. As a kid he spent his time playing in the woods, so when the opportunity to move to the mountains arose, the outdoor lifestyle of Colorado felt familiar to him. His ďŹ ancĂŠe, Colleen O’Neil, got an internship at Trail Runner magazine (based out of Carbondale) so the two made the move.

When I met with Miller for a beer, it was hard to hear him in the buzz of talk around us in Carbondale Beer Works because he so softspoken. I was ďŹ rst blown away that he would pick such a big adventure due to the amount of training and preparation involved. He shyly admitted that he did not even train! He lives near the Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley campus and makes the trek year round

to his work at Aloha Mountain Cyclery in Carbondale, and that was the gist of his training regiment. Right out of the gate I knew he was an undercover bonecrusher, riding just under the radar in this radical town.

Tour Divide The Tour Divide is no ride in the park. The race starts in Banff, Alberta, Canada and ends in Antelope Wells, New Mexico, taking riders roughly two weeks to ďŹ nish. The trail system is mainly dirt roads and four-wheel-drive trails passing around and through national parks. The trail runs the length of the Continental Divide, the hydrological divide of the Americas. The divide separates the river systems that drain into the Atlantic Ocean from those river systems that drain into the PaciďŹ c Ocean. There are many other hydrological divides in America, but the Continental Divide is iconic because of its high elevation through the Rocky Mountains.

The Tour Divide race clocks in at 2,745 miles with 200,000 feet of vertical gain, which is equivalent to hiking Mount Everest seven times from sea level. The entire race is self-supported, therefore all the racers must rely on their own means for food and water and anything else they may need. There is a Grand Depart date on June 13 each year, but riders can also qualify and start the race at any time during the summer. The racers are tracked by an online GPS to determine the winner.

With that many miles to cover and towns situated 100-180 miles apart, Miller rode an average of 125 miles a day. This allowed him

I inquired about what he ate on the trail and he said, “I ate whatever I could ďŹ nd at gas stations because these towns were so small, my selection was to say the least, limited.â€? This menu included the ever-classic Mrs. Freshly’s Danishes, Hostess Twinkies and Big Texas cinnamon rolls.

He continued, “I counted a mere four opportunities to buy a banana during the whole length of the trail.� Naturally, I expected that he was overly excited to eat a good meal and

drink a good beer after the trail. However, he said eating was not even enjoyable after the trail because of the effects the sugary processed food he had lived off for two weeks.

Inner strength This race takes just as much inner strength as it does physical endurance, due to the fact that, as a racer, you are alone for much of the trail, out in the wilderness, and you ride from sunrise to sunset EVERY DAY. MILLER RIDES page 15

“Dick has never compromised his daily painting practice and exhibition schedule.

He is a current Wyly board member and a tireless volunteer for the organization on all fronts, including acting as a sparkplug for the opening of our new Wyly Annex,” Alford continued.

Carter moved to Aspen in 1971 and became an assistant to Herbert Bayer (the renowned local artist of the Bauhaus School) for five years. His solo exhibitions include the David Floria Gallery in Aspen, Santa Monica Museum of Art in Santa Monica,

California, Mary Bell Gallery in Chicago, and Sandy Carson Gallery in Denver.

Carter is included in public and corporate collections from Absolute vodka, AT&T, Denver Museum of Art, and IBM. He has simultaneously maintained a career in the film industry and has made a significant mark in art communities across the country, including Aspen, Basalt, Santa Monica and Santa Fe.
