Go ask Alice, she’ll tell you what she knows

A

new Carbondale-based online magazine (AliceTheMag.com) owes its name to a pair of Alices. One, of “Alice in Wonderland” fame, was born at the hand of author Lewis Carroll in 1865. The other Alice, with the last name of Paul, is lesser known, at least to most guys. Paul (1885-1977) was an American suffragist, feminist as well as main strategist and leader of the 1910s campaign for the 19th Amendment which prohibits

sex discrimination in the right to vote.

“We named it Alice because we want the content to be both brazen and imaginative, like our inspirations: Alice Paul and Alice in Wonderland,” Alice co-founder Maura Masters told The Sopris Sun. “Alice is an honest depiction of what real women think about and go through each day.”

Jeannie Perry, the other half of the founding team, added that Alice is “An online magazine by, for and about real women … organic and all-inclusive … a platform for neo-feminism, with the undercurrent mes-

sage that equal does not mean the same.”

Masters and Perry are longtime friends.

They bumped into each other one day and Perry said she was “frustrated and fed up” with the way magazine cover girls look like they are “too young to drive.” Masters was looking for a new outlet for her creativity.

Fire district needs the money (Editor’s note: This letter was also addressed to Sopris Sun reporter John Colson).

Dear Editor: Please set the story straight. I made what I thought was an impassioned plea to all of the fire board members to do what they can to stop the negative impact on the fire department, caused by the economic downturn and lower property tax rate. I have seen the negative impacts on the fire department services, the volunteers and paid staff caused by this downturn. My plea was to help sway all the board members to do what is needed to stop the bleeding caused by the cuts in the fire budget.

Carl Smith is a good man. I did not single him out for criticism. My presentation was made before all the board members. Carl Smith made his vote not to support the need for the mill levy some time after I left the meeting. I did criticize the press for the undermining tone of recent articles. (My opinion). I found it enlightening and reinforcing of my opinion that my only quote reported in this paper was construed in a negative manner. I wish you had put in

my paraphrase quote “I would rather see the fire department have too much money than not enough and someone dies for lack of response due to budget short falls.” I don’t have the exact statement but this was my intent. The last mill levy request could have been written and presented better.

That is the past and it is time to be proactive and fix the problem and not put it off for another year.

I started fighting fires with the Carbondale volunteer fire department 40 years ago along with Chief Ron Leach and board member Gene Schilling. I have had disagreements with both of these men but when it came time to answer the call and go to whatever dangerous life threatening situation, I could depend on them to come together to take care of the people in the fire district, and get the job done. The last mill levy vote was the first time I can remember that the voters of the fire district rejected the district request for funding. The need remains real.

Rethink tax questions Dear Editor: I just read in the paper today that now the RE1 school district has also decided they need more money in the way of raising our taxes.

Isn’t that a wonderful thing? First the fire district and now the school district. I guess we are finally coming around to being thought of as another Aspen with a bottomless pocketbook.

When we retired we were hoping that we could stay in our home that we have worked for and paid for in the last 46 years that we have lived here and not be taxed out of, but it is looking more and more like that is not going to happen.

Are the current schools really that full that we need another school at Cattle Creek, and why can’t the school district raise the teachers pay so they can afford to live here instead of having to build affordable housing on one of the most attractive and used open spaces in Carbondale?

To me, neither one of these entities need tax raises that high. First, let the economy get back on its feet a little more. Have any LETTERS page 15

Green Hill blue over state’s marijuana delays

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The town of Carbondale has written a letter to the state of Colorado’s Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) of the Department of Revenue, asking that the state do something about a bureaucratic roadblock that is preventing a local cannabis-testing laboratory from doing its work.

That business, Green Hill Laboratories LLC, has gotten all the certifications needed from the state and the town to conduct microbial testing of marijuana smokable and edible products, to detect contamination such as mold and mildew and prevent products from making consumers sick, according to Jessica Olson, lab manager.

But the state has yet to get to work enforcing laws requiring that that testing be conducted, as laid out in statutes legalizing cannabis for recreational consumption.

Colorado voters in 2000 legalized marijuana use for registered medical-marijuana patients, and in 2012 for recreational marijuana use by anyone over 21 years of age, though the testing requirements only apply to the recreational cannabis industry.

As part of the state’s bureaucratic framework for overseeing the cultivation, sale and consumption of smokable products as well as edibles, the state was supposed to require that all cannabis products be tested by certified, professional laboratories.

But those requirements, though they apparently have been completed and the relevant documents issued to testing labs, have yet to make it onto the state health department’s website, from which cannabis-related growers and sellers get their legalcompliance information.

A principal analyst at Green Hill Labs, Hilary Glass, in 2014 came to Carbondale from Wisconsin, where she and her family have been doing the same kind of testing for agricultural products, mainly in the dairy industry, for decades.

She has been joined by three other employees — Green Hill Director Dr. Donald Salter, and analysts M. Leuther and Jessica Olson — in the rather specialized business of using microbiological technology to test the flowers of the marijuana plants being grown and sold, as well as edible products, for contamination by microbial organisms.

The business also has the ability to test food products, other than cannabis-related consumables, but they are not allowed to do so by the state, Olson said.

Olson said there have been six such testing labs licensed by the state, and that the others use chemical testing of the products, which is different in nature from the microbiological methods of testing.

To set themselves up in business, according to Olson, they paid out a considerable investment, though she was not sure exactly how much.

“It was in the six figures, I can tell you that for sure,” Olson said, explaining that Glass would have the exact numbers but was not available for comment.

When Glass went in to Town Hall about a year ago for the required permits to do business here, according to an Aug.

But recently, when Glass went before the trustees to renew her local business license, she informed the trustees of the bind her business is in due to the state’s tardiness, and the trustees agreed to lend Green Hill Labs the town’s support.

In the letter, Bernot stated, “Job creation is a core component to the health of every local economy, and a certified laboratory is a highly desirable and positive development for the town. The MED’s extended delay on enforcing microbial testing requirements for retail marijuana and the resulting financial harm to Green Hill Laboratories poses a direct negative effect on our community.

“Not only is Green Hill Laboratories unable to expand and create jobs as they had planned to do, they are being

pushed to the brink of bankruptcy and face the loss of their business,” the mayor continued.

The trustees agreed to extend Green Hill’s permit, which would have expired this month, to December, and to not require the business to pay the $2,500 in renewal and application fees that normally apply.

In her letter, the mayor asked that the MED “commence with mandatory microbial testing program, as described (in the statutes) with all prudent urgency and expediency.”

In addition, the town asked that the MED allow testing labs to “accept non-marijuana samples for scientific analysis.

As a small, rural community, Carbondale has a thriving farmer’s market and farm-to-table culinary culture. These segments of our community, which have nothing to do with marijuana, can improve their practices and the quality of their products” by making use of the testing lab’s resources.

“Bureaucratic convenience should not trump a small, rural community’s opportunity for access to laboratory services,” the mayor concluded.

Town installs dry well, trims branches Sopris Sun Staff Report Town crews have been busy over the past week or so, installing a new dry well in the alleyway between Main Street and Garfield Avenue, painting and applying “thermo bond material” on pedestrian crosswalks in preparation for the start of the school year, and trimming low branches over the sidewalk along 7th Street, among other tasks, according to the weekly memo from Town Manager Jay Harrington to the Board of Trustees, employees and other recipients.

At the Main Street/Highway 133 roundabout, the parks crew trimmed the new grass planted there, with a plan to trim the grass two or three times annually.

In addition, two irrigation-system valves were repaired after they were damaged by a contractor working for the Roaring Fork School District, a water leak was repaired at the women’s bathroom at the Gateway RV Park, and a pedestrian and dog-walking path was mowed at the Carbondale Nature Park.

Also at the Gateway RV Park, usage numbers show that it had occupancy of 71 percent for the week of Aug. 21-28.

New signs explaining the rules at Carbondale’s two cemeteries were erected last week, in response to a request from the town trustees, and the sound baffles were removed from the gazebo structure in Sopris

Park, again at the request of the trustees, Harrington reported.

The contractor for the Colorado Department of Transportation reported weather-related delays in applying chip-and-seal and “fog seal” along Highway 133 south of town, and the work was expected to continue this week, weather permitting, Harrington wrote. While motorists should continue to expect occasional delays due to the road work, Harrington continued, there is to be no work on the highway over the Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4-7.

Recreation programs for last week included the Motion Mondays classes for preschoolers, Harrington reported, but other than that the summertime programming schedule has come to an end. Starting this week, he wrote, would be the youth flag football season, and the first of the fall’s Climbing Club classes.

Additional programming is to include North Face Bike Park lessons, skateboard lessons, climbing wall lessons, Early Release Wednesday open gym and youth only facilitated climbing, Motion Mondays, Dinky Dunkers basketball for first and second graders, youth volleyball, and dodgeball derivatives. Specialty classes include summit conditioning, base building for cyclists, and tae kwon do.

The fall/winter recreational brochure has

been completed and is available at the town’s recreation website, www.carbondalerec.com. Hard copies of the brochure are to be inserted into the Sept. 3 edition of The Sopris Sun, and can be picked up at various locations around town, including Town Hall, the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center, the Third Street Center, the Carbondale Branch Library, the City Market grocery store, and the area schools.

A “modified schedule” is now in effect at the John M. Fleet Pool on Main Street, and will be in effect through Sept. 7, Harrington wrote, including lap swimming and water aerobics starting at 10 a.m., open swim from 11 a.m. to noon, and regular lap swimming from noon to 1 p.m.

Open swimming times at the pool will be from 1:15-5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.

The pool is scheduled to close for the season on Sept. 7, Labor Day. According to Harrington, between May 24 and Aug. 28, 4,680 users were reported at the pool, including 131 users during the week of Aug. 21-27.

The Carbondale Police Department has been monitoring traffic near the schools as students have returned to classes, and will be conducting periodic “walk-throughs” throughout the school year, as is the departmental policy.

Cop Shop From Aug. 20-26, Carbondale officers handled 219 calls for service. The police department reported the following cases of note during that time period.

FRIDAY, Aug. 21: At 6:01 p.m. police were called to Sopris Park on a possible case of sexual assault. On arrival at the park, the officers spoke with the mother of the juvenile but “were unable to determine what, if anything, had actually occurred,” according to a departmental summary. No further action was taken by the officers.

SATURDAY, Aug. 22: At 2:13 a.m. police observed a “suspicious male” at a location on Highway 133. Upon investigation, they ticketed a juvenile for curfew violation.

SATURDAY, Aug. 22: At 7:21 a.m. police received a report that several vehicles along Euclid Avenue had been entered by person or persons unknown.

FRIDAY, Aug. 28: At 7:04 a.m. Garfield County sheriff’s deputies were called to a reported burglary at a business near the town of Carbondale. A window was broken to permit entry, but no cash was reported missing. The case is open pending further investigation.

SATURDAY, Aug. 29: At 2:43 p.m. Garfield County sheriff’s deputies responded to a burglary at a business near Carbondale.

There was no sign of forced entry, and while some tools were reported missing there was no indication of a specific time when the tools might have been taken. The case is open pending further investigation.

Carbondale fire board OKs tax hike ballot question

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District board of directors last week formally approved a ballot question seeking a tax hike from district property owners, and a committee of concerned citizen activists is being organized to advocate for passage of the tax question.

The committee, which numbered 15 members as of Tuesday, is composed of such noted Carbondale-area luminaries as local philanthropist Jim Calaway, Pour House restaurant manager Skip Bell, local resident Casey Sheehan, Dr. Sandy Devany, rancher Kit Strang, KDNK manager Steve Skinner, and former Carbondale mayor Michael Hassig.

“And there are more who want to join in,” said Carbondale attorney Tom Adgate, who is heading up the committee. “By this time next week, it should be a Who’s Who of people who care about Carbondale.”

The CRFPD is a sprawling district that covers about 320 square miles in terrain stretching from Marble in the south to Spring Valley in the north.

Founded in 1953, the department has 19 career (paid) personnel and 68 volunteer personnel, according to information on its website, www.carbondalefire.org.

The pro-tax-hike committee is made up of ordinary citizens, Adgate explained, and has no direct tie to the fire district itself.

Fire district board members and employees are prevented by law from actively campaigning on behalf of the tax question, according to information provided to the board by fire district attorney Eric Gross.

Gross provided a summary of the state’s Fair Campaign Practices Act, regarding special-district elections, which explains that the district, as a taxing entity, “may not make contributions or contributions in kind to campaigns” involving board-member elections or “any issue before the electorate.”

In addition, according to Gross’ information, district board members “may expend not more than $50 of district funds on letters, telephone calls, or other activities incident to making statements or answering questions concerning the issue.”

Districts are permitted, though, to spend taxpayer funds “to dispense fair and balanced information on any issue of official concern before the electorate.

Such information “must be factual, must include arguments both for and against the proposal, and cannot contain a conclusion or opinion in favor of or against any issue.”

State law does not, however, prohibit district employees or board members from advocating for passage of the tax question “on his or her own time, or spending his or her own funds to urge electors to vote in favor of or against any issue before the electorate.”

This much we now know. The elegant trophy awarded to the Our Town, One Table peace-flag table that went missing on Aug. 22 did not just “go missing.” It was kidnapped by an underground group calling itself “The Capers,” who apparently mean business. Shelley stepping down for job in Washington

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Amelia Shelley, the director of the Garfield County Public Library District, is leaving her job next month, to take the job of Executive Director of the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District in the southcentral and southwestern section of the state of Washington.

She was scheduled to submit her resignation at a library board meeting on Sept.

2, and expects to stay on the job until early October and report to her new job on Oct. 12, she told The Sopris Sun in a telephone conversation on Tuesday.

She said the district’s board of directors probably would embark upon a nationwide search for a replacement at a job that currently carries with it an annual salary of between $85,000 and $105,000.

Shelley came to the Garfield County library system in 2007, the year after the county’s voters created the library district and authorized a combination of a quartercent, county-wide sales tax and a 1-mill property tax to pay for district operations.

She was hired following a nationwide search, which enticed her to leave the position she previously held for 10 years with the library district in Cheyenne, Wyo. In addition, she came to the job just as the district was embarking on an ambitious building program to either replace or significantly improve the existing, aging library buildings in the six towns that make up the district — Carbondale, Glenwood Springs, New Castle, Silt, Rifle and Parachute.

It was the voters’ authorization of the property tax, Shelley recalled, that allowed the district to finance the $28 million construction program, with $22 million coming from “certificates of par-

ticipation” and the rest from the district’s budgetary reserves.

Shelley said that all of the library construction projects came in under budget with the exception of the new Carbondale Branch Library, where problems cropped up such as having to fix the drainage of the parking lot adjacent to the library, as well as having to change the material used in the library ceiling for maintenance and access reasons.

Plus, she said, by the time the Carbondale building project was underway, the cost of construction had begun to rebound from the recessionary low of around $200 per square foot, to about $300 per square foot.

In general, however, the program was deemed a great success.

“It’s hard not to cite construction as our greatest achievement,” she wrote in an email, “but I think increasing the visibility and value of libraries in our communities has been the bigger accomplishment. We are extremely proud of the ways we have come to support our users and their needs, and I believe the Library District will continue to thrive under new leadership.”

One example of that expanded presence that she cited is a new Shop Local campaign, initiated by the district this year in partnership with the various towns and cities in Garfield County, as well as chambers of commerce, non-profit organizations and private businesses.

The general idea behind the program, according to a guest column penned for an area newspaper by district publicist Emily Hisel, is to encourage county residents to shop locally as a way of providing financial support to an array of local businesses, communities and governmental entities

Obituary Jean L. Sobieck 1952-2015 Jean L. Sobieck of Montrose, a 30year resident of the Roaring Fork Valley, passed away on Aug. 30, 2015 at age 63 as a result of complications from her brave struggle against brain cancer.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Vincenzo and Gloria Santoro, and her sister Barbara. She is survived by her husband Ron; her sisters Elaine McBride of Casper, Wyoming, and Carol Ann Santoro of Concord, California; as well as seven dear nieces and nephews.

She was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1952 and moved to Colorado in 1972.

From a young age Jean was a high-energy person who loved art, cooking and being outdoors. She also loved pets, camping and travel. Jean married her partner for life and soul mate, Ron, in 1987.

Her professional career was varied, but always highly successful. She was su-

pervisor of dispatch for Aspen/Pitkin County, district sales manager for a large corporation, and co-established a painting contracting business with Ron in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Jean realized her lifelong dream of becoming a full-time artist when she opened Glasshouse Studio in Montrose in 2005, producing award winning dichroic glass jewelry. She was also active in the Montrose art scene.

All who knew her will remember her smile, her warmth, her energy, and her love for life, family, and friends. Everyone who remembers Jean is asked to celebrate her life in their own way. Raising a glass of wine in her memory would be quite appropriate.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Ute Indian Museum in Montrose. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hope West Hospice, in memory of Jean Sobieck, Box 1804, Montrose, CO 81402.

Fire board om page 5 Adgate explained that he decided to take up the committee work on his own, although he noted that his wife is a volunteer ďŹ re ďŹ ghter with the CRFPD. “We’re just going to try to educate the community,â€? Adgate declared, referring to the ballot question’s request for a tax hike that will generate close to $600,000 in additional annual property tax revenue for the district’s coffers, on top of what the district now collects each year.

The money is needed, according to advocates of the tax hike, to overcome an estimated 40 percent loss in revenue as a consequence of the Great Recession of 2008-2009.

Over the last few years, property values plummeted due to the recession, leading to the loss of revenue for the district, and the regional economy has been slow to recover since then.

Current estimates are that the district’s revenues will regain roughly 25 percent of their value for the 2015 tax year, although district ofďŹ cials are doubtful the resulting revenues will be sufďŹ cient to overcome the losses incurred in the last couple of years.

The current tax-hike campaign also is a reaction to a 2013 tax-increase request by the district, which was shot down by the electorate.

Voters in 2013 questioned the size of the increase, which would have nearly doubled the district’s annual property tax income, and the lack of a “sunset clause� that would have restricted the duration of the tax increase to a certain amount of time.

For this tax hike, after considerable discussion, the ďŹ re board agreed to impose a two-year sunset clause, meaning the tax increase would expire after 2017.

After that, if district funds remain lower than needed to fully fund the district’s operations, the ďŹ re board has indicated it may decide to go back to the voters for another revenue boost.

Another outcome from the 2013 electoral defeat was the district’s decision to put together an updated master plan, since

a 2004 master plan was only meant to last for 10 years and was considered outdated by 2014.

An electronic version of that new master plan, compiled by a team of consultants at a cost of nearly $87,000, can be found at the ďŹ re district’s website. Printed copies of the master plan may be obtained from the ďŹ re district, by calling 9632491 or visiting the district’s headquarters building, 301 Meadowood Drive, at the corner of Meadowood and Highway 133 at the south end of town.

In the meantime, Adgate said, a Facebook page has been created for the campaign to win passage of the tax hike (www.facebook.com/Citizens4aSafeCommunity) and the committee is getting to work on its plan for convincing voters that the tax hike is warranted.

Adgate said there will be community-wide meetings to discuss the tax hike, though no meeting dates had been decided as of Tuesday. “I think once the people get the facts, they’ll be in full support,� Adgate said of the campaign.

Looking back at 2013, Adgate conceded, “the district overreached a little bit last time,� when the district asked voters for a 6-mill tax increase over the existing mill levy of 5.903 mills.

A “millâ€? equals $1 in taxation for every $1,000 in the assessed valuation of real property. A tax increase of 1.75 mills would add roughly $88 to the annual property tax bill of a home or other property valued by the GarďŹ eld County Assessor at $500,000, according to a calculation offered at an Aug. 19 meeting of the ďŹ re board. “Heck, last time I even voted against it,â€? Adgate admitted.

But this time, he continued, the district is asking for less than a third of the amount requested in 2013, and unlike the 2013 election, there will be an active force of community members working on behalf of the tax hike. “It was handled poorly last time,� Adgate recalled, “and we’re going to handle it right this time.�

But, she went on, “The new position is a great opportunity for both my career and to be closer to our family in the Northwest (where one of her two daughters lives).�

Still, Shelley told The Sopris Sun, “It’ll be hard to leave here. We have a really nice house here.�

The new job will be more complicated, Shelley noted, explaining that the district covers three counties with a total area of 4,200 square miles and a population of 450,000.

The Fort Vancouver district contains 14 library buildings and has two bookmobiles, she said, considerably more than Garfield County’s district.

But other than that, Shelley said, “I’d say we’re pretty comparable� in terms of the modernity of the facilities, the use of computers and other electronic equipment, and the level and quality of services offered to library patrons.

Shelley said she feels conďŹ dent she is leaving the district in good shape for her successor, but noted, “We’re facing, still, some difďŹ cult times, ďŹ nancially,â€? as a result of the reductions in revenue due to the Great Recession of 2008-2009 and the fact that the local economy remains in low gear.

Ovarian cancer: Awareness is key

It’s time to see our school visions realized

By Daniel E. Biggs I believe we are blessed to live in the most beautiful place on earth and it is beautiful not just because of the wonderful mountains and rivers and valleys but because of the people and who you are and what you value and what you do for each other. One area of pride is engagement in our schools. Over the last several years you have been asked to be involved in the school district’s strategic planning process and you responded overwhelmingly. We had many evenings of standing room only participation in each community and the ideas were innovative and brilliant and had the student as the focus. You were asked again to be involved in our facility master planning process and you responded by giving significant amounts of time and effort to visioning what is needed and possible in our communities for our children.

Now it’s time to see those visions realized, to modernize our schools, implementing best designs for safety, replacing buildings that are sorely out of date and even building a new school to relieve enrollment pressure in our elementary schools and finding housing solutions throughout our district to attract and retain the best teachers and more. This will require a large commitment to support the district in raising funds to get these necessary and worthy projects completed. It is not without significant thought and deliberation that we come to our community and ask for your help. We are asking for $122 million to cover all that is needed in our communities for our schools. This translates into approximately $23 per month per $500,000 of residential home value. We recognize the sacrifice this is and ensure that any dollars raised are

for school district construction and capital improvements alone.

Four years ago you were asked for and supported the mill levy override; one of only a very few districts in Colorado to do so. At that time I was opposed to the override primarily on the basis that the funds were for general expenditure and were not bound by resolution to the needed expenses. The campaign however focused on several areas of need, all of them worthy of our attention. Now, having been on the board for these last four years, I can tell you without reservation or a single qualification that those dollars have been spent only on items promised in the campaign. In fact, every time an issue came before the board where we would possibly draw upon those override funds, the board would pull the language from the campaign and ballot and ask, “Are we being true to the promises made?”

In this case, the money needed and asked for is solely for these capital improvement and construction projects that will remain valuable assets owned by the district. These funds are not for general operating expenses. As always, these funds would only be spent in accordance with the ballot initiative.

Again, we recognize this is a heavy ask and you have given so much. We have before us a great opportunity to restore and build the world-class facilities that are worthy of this most beautiful place that will only strengthen our ability to provide exceptional learning for our children.

By Diane Darling September is a wonderful month here in the Roaring Fork Valley as there is a hint of fall in the air and the leaves begin to change to gorgeous reds and golds. There is another color that is special during this month, and it is the color teal.

Why? September also happens to be National Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, something near and dear to my heart, and the color of this cancer is teal.

When my mom was dying from this dreadful disease, I promised her I would not give up the fight. Since there is no successful screen for this cancer, AWARENESS is KEY! To that end, I want to share with you the following information.

Symptoms What makes ovarian cancer so unspeakably dangerous is that it is hardest to detect in its early stages.

Sadly, only about 19 percent of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed before the cancer has spread outside of the ovaries when the disease is most responsive to treatment.

To complicate matters, the ovaries are tiny organs buried deep within the abdomen, making the symptoms originating from them all the more difficult to detect and all the more likely to be

confused for something far less serious. The more progressed the disease, the more pronounced the symptoms are likely to be.

The most common symptoms include: • Bloating; • Pelvic or abdominal pain; • Trouble eating or feeling full quickly; • Urinary urgency or frequency.

Although these symptoms can also be indicative of benign conditions, they can suggest the presence of cancers in other organs. Symptoms that are out of the ordinary for you and that persist almost daily for two weeks or more should be brought to the immediate attention of your gynecologist and preferably a gynecological oncologist.

It is imperative that women advocate for themselves. Do not let any (uninformed) professionals brush you off. My mother was misdiagnosed by four doctors and was finally diagnosed at stage IV. Sadly, by then it was too late. Do NOT let this happen to you.

Acclaimed dancer touches down at Launchpad Sept. 7-12 Sopris Sun Staff Report Molissa Fenley, an internationally known dancer and choreographer, joins Dance Initiative at the Launchpad as an Artist-In-Residence on Sept. 7-12. Fenley will be accompanied by two members of her company and will be creating a dance that will be performed in New York City in late fall, according to a press release.

Over the course of Fenley’s 38-year career, she has produced more than 80 original works that have been performed at the Joyce Theater, City Center, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, Jacob’s Pillow and American Dance Festival. She is also a faculty member at Mills College.

Fenley’s week-long residency will include open rehearsals for the public to view from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sept, 9-11, a choreographer’s talk at the Carbondale Branch Library at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 9, a free open-company Class from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 11, a master class from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Sept. 12, and a performance of Fenley’s work at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 12.

Fenley formed Molissa Fenley and Company in 1977. She he has performed throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Europe, Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Her work “Cenotaph” received a New York Dance & Performance award (Bessie) for choreog-

Molissa has also created many works for other dance companies, most recently for the Oakland Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Robert Moses’ Kin and the Seattle Dance Project.

Fenley is a Guggenheim Fellow, a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, a Fellow of the Bogliasco Foundation, a recipient of two Asian Cultural Council residencies in Japan, and is a Master Artist of the Atlantic Center of the Arts. She is currently the Danforth Professor of Dance at Mills College and

often teaches choreographic and repertory workshops at other universities, most recently at Bennington College.

Two members of Fenley’s company, Christiana Axelsen and Rebecca Chaleff, will join Fenley to complete her newest work – “Water Table.”

“This piece is an artistic response to the very significant decrease in the amount of accumulated fresh water available in our world,” said a Dance Initiative spokeswoman.

Fenley has a long history of creating choreographic works inspired by environmental issues, going back to “The Floor Dances” in 1989 in response to the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. She is also known for creating dances that use complex patterning and demand remarkable stamina from performers.

Fenley and Company will be performing “Water Table” in addition to “Dance An Impossible Space” and “Entrance,”

both of which were created in 2104.
