Tall tales: e un-Humpty Dumpty story Dear Editor: Hello! On my first visit to Carbondale last fall I was shown around town by my friend, Peg DeVilbiss. I did an interview at KDNK, saw the Launch Pad, the cinema and the shopping streets –– all delightful –– and we finished our tour by stopping in a welcoming watering hole called The Pour House, distinguished by an amazing floor. Refreshments were taken (as they say in Ireland) and some introductions made. We found ourselves in a congenial gathering for the afternoon. I’d mention names but they always go in one ear and out the other.

Someone asked me how I liked the Roaring Fork Valley. “Spectacular,” I said. “Hard to beat. And that mountain!”

“Mount Sopris,” I was told. “12,953 feet high” said a fellow I learned was named Bill.

“You know that people hike to the top and ski down?”

“I will not be joining them anytime soon,” I said. He looked at me quite seriously and said, “I doubt if you’ve heard of how we almost lost her ... .”

“Lost who?” I said.

“The mountain. Mount Sopris.” Somebody had a coughing fit and had to leave the table, but Bill went on solemnly. “We had a quake in ’85 and the whole thing came down.” Someone else was red in the face, no doubt from suppressed emotion.

“I never heard anything about that!” I said. “Surely I would have heard!”

“We kept it quiet,” Bill said. “The whole state did. It was spontaneous. Everyone in Colorado just shut up about it.”

Several people around the table nodded their heads and sort of murmured. “We all have livings to make.”

“It was,” said Bill. “Every radio and TV station just shut down on the subject while we all decided what to do.”

“And what was that?” I asked.

“Pickups,” Bill replied.

“Pickups?” said I. “Every pickup in Colorado just showed up every evening after dark. At least three people per truck. They just showed up and started putting rock in the beds of those trucks, hour after hour, night after night. Putting that mountain back together. Come morning they’d all be gone.”

I couldn’t believe my ears, but I only had

to look at the sincere expressions on folks around the table to see that this had to be what had happened. Some people had tears running down their cheeks. More people seemed to be joining the group now, and they were all looking carefully at me and then at one another. Somebody was whooping in the kitchen –– at a football game on the radio or something, I figured.

“How long did all this go on?” I asked.

“Months,” said Bill. “Night after night.

Every night the trucks rolled in and you could hear them at it all night long. And then, one morning, it was finally done.”

“Done?”

“Yep. Back, good as new. Or good as old, I guess.” He laughed. “Check it out.” He showed me a photo from a newspaper dated 1976 and another from a copy of The Sopris Sun. “They’re identical,” I said, greatly impressed.

“They are,” said Bill. “I think you’ll agree they did a terrific job.”

“I never would have believed it,” I said. I rose and shook hands all around and went for my pocket to pay for my drinks.

“No, no,” said Bill. “This is on us. I think we’ll all agree it was worth it.”

The crowd –– now considerably larger and smiling happily –– all agreed and began dropping dollar bills on the table. We left The Pour House and crossed the street. Behind me I could hear loud cheers, whoops and laughter; the football game must have turned out well, I thought. I turned and took another appreciative look at Mount Sopris. Wow. I never would have guessed, I said to myself. Well done, Carbondale! Well done, Colorado! O, well done!

Getting gassed, part II Dear Editor: The fueling station is a very important component to the proposed grocery store. National chain retailers, like Kroger, employ a small army of real-estate professionals who analyze the placement of every component of their stores. Once a winning formula is determined, that formula is replicated in new stores. The fueling station is a key component to the winning formula. Kroger needs this fueling station to compete with Whole Foods here in the valley.

Former chamber president walking for a cause

e Camino de Santiago Sopris Sun Staff Report

Ted Reed, 69, a Carbondale resident for over 20 years, is about to undertake the hike of his life — a 600-mile trek along the Camino de Santiago, a medieval pilgrimage route in Spain. Inspired by a 2010 Martin Sheen movie called “The Way,” Reed will be spreading the ashes of his old friend Karen Anthony DeRiemer, while also raising money to support her disabled son Christian, who suffers from a rare form of muscular dystrophy.

For the past year, Reed, a former president of the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, has been training around Carbondale, walking 10 or more miles several times a week.

“On the Camino,” he said, “my average walking day will be 12 to 14 miles, but the real challenge will be doing that day after day after day. I feel blessed to have the Roaring Fork Valley as my training ground. Who could ask for a more spectacular area with the Rio Grande Trail, Prince Creek road and Mt. Sopris nearby?”

Reed hopes to inspire people to make donations or pledges to support the nursing care, special equipment and supportive housing that his young friend Christian DeRiemer will need to live an independent and productive life. Christian, 27, has been confined to a wheel chair and has had to depend on mechanical ventilation, a feeding tube and round-the-clock nursing care to survive since he was two years old. He is currently attending West Chester State University in Pennsylvania. In November, he is slated to move into a group home in Norristown that offers round-the-clock nursing support.

Reed has launched a website, www.christianandted.org, that contains a blog of his journey, explains Christian’s needs and enables donors to support his Camino walk with donations that benefit a special needs trust for Christian.

Courtesy photo Reed, a Buddhist who usually keeps his spiritual life private, says that he’s making this pilgrimage in place of a twoto-three month retreat he usually takes each year. “When I do my normal annual meditation retreats, only my family and a few friends know what I am doing,” he told The Sopris Sun. “Their normal reaction is ‘There goes crazy Ted off to sit without talking for two or three months!’ Since I am trying to raise money to help Christian live a happy and productive life, this time I am choosing to ‘advertise’ my private walking meditation.”

Reed plans to complete his walk in just over two months,

maintaining an online silence. He will be sending blog posts to his wife Carla Reed back in Carbondale so that she can put them online.

Reed will start walking on Sept. 6. “That will be one of the hardest days of the entire pilgrimage,” said Reed. “I will walk from St. Jean Pied-de-Port in France to Roncesvalles, Spain.

There are two possible routes I can take. The Route de Napoleon is the recommended route and goes through the Pyrenees on a mountain path. The distance is 16 miles with an elevation gain of 4,500 feet. The alternative route, if the weather is bad, is the Valcarlos Route that follows the highway for 50 percent of the route. It’s 15 miles with an elevation gain of 2,500 feet. I am hoping to do the Route de Napoleon because it’s much more spectacular and picturesque with no road traffic.”

The Camino de Santiago is actually a collection of paths that run from France, Portugal and eastern Spain to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the remains of the apostle St. James the Great are buried. Reed will follow the “Camino Frances” through northern Spain to Muxia, on Spain’s Atlantic coast.

Along with paths to Rome and Jerusalem, the Camino was one of medieval Europe’s three most important Christian pilgrimage routes, and its traditions date back to the ninth century. Those who paid penance by making the long walk could be forgiven for all their sins.

By taking the 1,000-kilometer walk, Reed is hoping to both inspire support for Christian, who is attending college despite his physical challenges, and to convince other people to pursue deferred dreams. He said, “If I can try a pilgrimage like this at age 69, I hope others will have the courage to do something they want to do, but haven’t had the inspiration to try. I hope that my walk will be that inspiration and that others will try to do something extraordinary with their lives.”

Fire board votes for tax hike ballot question

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The elected leaders of the Carbondale fire department voted on Aug. 19, 4-1, to move ahead with a ballot question this November, asking for a tax hike that would bring in roughly $600,000 more in annual property tax revenues than are now coming into the department’s coffers.

The ballot question also would come with a two-year “sunset clause.”

That means that a tax hike of 1.75 mills, which would boost the tax rate to 7.653, would be limited to two years in duration, after which the tax rate would drop back to its existing level.

If the district still needed additional revenues, it would need to go back to the voters, perhaps as early as 2018, to seek another tax hike.

The sole dissenting vote on the tax question came from Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District (CRFPD) board member Carl Smith, a former fire fighter and paid staffer at the CRFPD who won election to the board in 2014 largely based on his public skepticism about the board’s handling of its fiscal affairs.

At the end of the Aug. 19 meeting, after the vote was taken, Smith was grilled about his ongoing criticism of what he has termed the fire board’s lack of transparency and sound financial planning.

“I wonder if you’re going to actively, uh, go against the men and women on the fire department, to advance whatever cause you’re advancing,” said district resident and volunteer fire-fighter Mark Luttrell, who spoke out in favor of a tax hike at the meeting and criticized Smith for his dissenting viewpoint, ac-

cording to a recording of the meeting.

“Are you saying,” asked district resident, Tom Adgate “that you don’t believe the men and women of the fire fighters need more money?”

Smith, whose voice seemed to reflect anger at the questions, shot back, “I’ve crawled on my belly, in fires, with these people. I will never be against them. I resent that (accusation).”

His concern, he said is that the board does not have a well-crafted plan to present to voters, who in 2013 rejected a tax-hike proposal from the board based largely on a lack of planning and on a lack of a “sunset clause” limiting the tax increase to a certain length of time before it expires.

But, he said later, he will continue to voice his opinion, stating that it is his right to do so under state and federal law and is part of his obligation to the voters who elected him to the fire board.

He said he agrees with the proposed 2016 budget submitted by Fire Chief Ron Leach, which calls for raises for paid personnel next year.

“I’m very supportive of paying them the salaries they need,” Smith said.

But he added that he continues to doubt whether the district has adequately analyzed the findings and recommendations of consultants who recently produced a master plan for the district’s operations, and whether the district is on firm ground in its goal of seeking a tax hike this year.

“There’s money in the till,” Smith declared.

“We can go another year” [without a tax hike].

He cited calculations supplied by Almont Associates, one of the consultants who worked on the master plan, to bolster this view.

Cowboy Up continues summer festivities Sopris Sun Staff Report Carbondale’s summer-long series of events and parties, which got charged up with last week’s Festival De Las Americas in Sopris Park and the final Carbondale Wild West Rodeo at the Darien Riding Arena, gets going again this weekend with the annual Cowboy Up celebration on Aug. 28, at the 4th Street Park and Plaza, reported Town Manager Jay Harrington in his weekly memo to the Board of Trustees, town staff and other recipients.

Looking back at the 2015 Carbondale Mountain Fair, Harrington reported that sales tax revenues from the event were up by 9.2 percent over revenues from the 2014 Mountain Fair.

Other than the festivities, work by town employees has continued apace, including completion of this year’s chip-and-seal work on town streets, and Harrington noted that the town’s street sweeper would be working “in the neighborhoods where the chip-andseal took place” to take care of the remaining aggregate on the street surfaces.

Other end of summer duties, Harrington reported, will include installation of a new dry-well in the alley between Main Street and Garfield Avenue, behind the European Antiques shop, and work with Gould Construction to “re-establish the irrigation system at the intersection of Highway 133 and

Weant Boulevard, which was shut down for recent utility work related to the Thompson Park/Ross Montessori School project in that locale.

Regarding that project, Harrington reported that the contractor completed paving duties at the intersection of the highway, Weant and Lewie’s Lane, and that the new pavement was due to be striped on Monday.

Further south along the highway, Colorado Department of Transportation crews were expected to continue working on upgrades to the highway road surface, including installation of rumble strips along the centerline and the application of “fog coat sealant” to the newly-laid aggregate surface.

Harrington predicted there will continue to be a 2.5-mile lane closure, alternating between eastbound and westbound traffic, for the week.

Town staff is working on submission of a mini-grant application to the Garfield County Federal Mineral Lease District, seeking $25,000 for construction of an outdoor shade shelter at the community oven in Bonnie Fischer Park as well as a retrofit of heating ducts within a tenant office space at the adjacent Third Street Center, Harrington reported.

On the development front, town staff last week sent staff and referral comments to the planning consultant in charge of the new

City Market Carbondale development proposal, which was submitted as an “informal” pre-application document earlier this month.

In addition, town staff last week completed a cover letter and comments concerning the preliminary draft Environmental Impact Statement issued by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, about oil and gas drilling applications in the Thompson Creek area. Carbondale is a “cooperating agency” and thus eligible to make official comments on the draft EIS. During a tour of the Nettle Creek water plants last week, by Trustee A.J. Hobbs and town utility director Mark O’Meara, officials noticed a problem with the South Nettle Creek spring box, which will be investigated and remedied.

In terms of services provided by the town, Carbondale Police Officer Michael Zimmerman, who already is certified to conduct driver’s license examinations for first-timers seeking a permit to drive a car, will soon be certified to also test first-timers seeking a driver’s permit for a motorcycle, according to Harrington’s memo.

Also from the police department, Harrington reported, was news that Officer Randy Rogers will complete his Spanish language immersion class this week, an experience Rogers has reported as “very good and challenging.”

SATURDAY, Aug. 15: At 10:49 a.m. police were called about a domestic violence incident on South 8th Street, and responded. They arrested a male Carbondale resident and took him to the Garfield County Jail on charges of harassment and domestic violence.

SUNDAY, Aug. 16: At 10:08 a.m. police stopped a vehicle that had failed to obey a traffic control device, and ticketed the driver for the alleged violation, and for driving with a suspended license.

His driver’s license was confiscated.

SUNDAY, Aug. 16: At 12:37 p.m. police got a call about “someone pleasuring themselves” under a bridge at River Valley Ranch, and found a local man who was issued a citation for public indecency.

SUNDAY, AUG. 16: At 8:10 p.m. police were called to a Main Street business about a “disruptive male.” Said mail was ticketed for criminal trespass and resisting arrest.

SUNDAY, Aug. 16: At 11:02 p.m. police got a REDDI (report every drunk driver immediately) call about a vehicle blocking the right of way on 8th Street.

They contacted the driver and arrested him on suspicion of drunk driving and parking in the middle of the street.

The Road 100 fire in 2008 moved so quickly that residents in its path had very little time to evacuate. Before we knew it, the fire jumped Hwy 82 and was headed to heavily populated areas on Missouri Heights.

Our Town, One Table: A fabulous feeding frenzy

By The Anonymous Food Critic Watermelon gazpacho, bombersback rice crispy treats, roasted red pepper muhammara, What Up Vermont Kimchi, nirvana cherry pie, homemade ice cream.

OH ME, OH MY! Is this some five star Aspen restaurant?

New York City’s best? The San Francisco treat?

Au contraire. This was none other than Carbondale’s finest coming together to celebrate great food and vibrant community for the first annual Our Town, One Table, a community potluck that took over Fourth Street in front of the Carbondale Branch Library on a splendid Colorado summer’s eve.

Unofficial numbers are in the 400 range, and yours truly, The Anonymous Food Critique, was on hand to sample the finest luck of the pot. The tables were set, the linens were laid, decorations décor, folks suited up and flavors galore.

Where to begin with such bountiful abundance of homemade dishes, intoxicating aromas and enchanting colors? Well, hors d’oeuvres of course. Amidst the spreads of cheese and crackers, veggies and dips, there was a gem of a Middle Eastern delight made by Karen Glenn and Tom Passavant — a red pepper walnut muhammara with pomegranate molasses. Its lightness made my mind float with the summer breeze

while the subtle spices paired with the crisp crunch of the freshly picked snap peas twirled my torso and twisted my tastebuds, finishing with a fruit minor after taste.

Main dishes of summer salads, faro and greens, wild rice arugulas, potatoes au gratin, mango’d pork, hand-picked porcini mushrooms and steak, homegrown black currant and beets kale salad, made quite an impression. However it was Barbara Bush’s Moroccan chicken that took my heart. The combination of tender chicken marinade with a healthy amount of turmeric and seasonings, artichoke hearts, the sharpest green olives, and enough onion and garlic to save an army from vampires still makes

me weak in the knees when I recollect its savory flavors.

Pies were plenty for dessert, and Staci Dickerson’s nirvana cherry pie with handpicked cherries and homemade whipped cream took the cake. What really got my attention and my tongue was Marty Schlein and Susy Ellison’s not homemade ice cream; it was made-at-the-table ice cream. They literally hand cranked a delectable vanilla ice cream right at the table (bottom right photo). It was a perfect palate cleanser as the sunset pinked. Next year, I hope Our Town, One table takes over Main Street with one continuous table from Third Street to Seventh Street.

Jack Roberts book coming The late Jack Roberts, one of the bestknown and successful artists to come out of Colorado in the 20th century, spent a lifetime painting scenes from the West. He was a Redstone resident for many years and died in 2000. Carbondale author Darrell Munsell spent more than a year researching Roberts and gathering prime examples of his work. The result is “Colorado Artist Jack Roberts: Painting the West,� published

by Arcadia Publishing & History Press, which will be shipped to stores and available to the public on Oct. 5, according to a press release. “With over 70 full-color paintings ‌ Munsell traces Roberts’s career from early apprenticeship with Harvey Dunn through his many changes in lifestyle and subject, to celebrate this respected artist of the American West,â€? the Arcadia press release states. The press releases continues, “Jack Roberts’s gregarious nature and colorful lifestyle were legendary to locals.â€? As for Munsell, he is a professor emeritus at West Texas A&M, and auther of three other books on historical subjects. He served on the Redstone Historical Preservation Commission and is involved with several local historical societies.

Mechanical bull riding and music, there was that and a lot more at the annual Festival de las Americas in Sopris Park on Sunday. The late Jackie Morales, from Peru, started the festival more than a decade ago. Today, the day’s activities include honoring those who have given back to the community through the Jackie Morales distinguished awards for community service. Recipients this year include: Anibal Guevara, a volunteer from Ecuador who was recognized for his long-time role in doing electrical work for the festival; Barbara Johnson, who helped to spearhead CMC’s primary degree program; Mario Alverde, a Roaring Fork High School alum who was recognized for his volunteer efforts; and Glenwood Springs High School teacher Lisa Hartert, who was recognized for her extra efforts for English-as-a-second-language students. Vera Diemoz looks back on ompson years

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer The year was 1911, and: • Ishi, considered the last Native American to make contact with European Americans, emerges from the wilderness in northeast California; • The U.S. sends 20,000 troops to the Mexico border as that country’s revolution gains momentum; • The U.S. Supreme Court dissolves Standard Oil; • The Brooklyn Dodgers buy land for what will become Ebbets Field.

• Closer to Colorado in 1911: • The settlement of Gypsum, east of Glenwood Springs, is incorporated as a town; • The largest piece of marble taken from the Colorado-Yule quarry to date is 28 feet long and weighs 55 tons; • And … Vera (Montover) Diemoz is born at old Snowmass Creek, where St. Benedict’s Monastery is now located.

From 1911 to 1930, Vera moved with her family to farms at several Roaring Fork Vera (Montover) Diemoz and her family leased the Thompson ranch in the mid-1920s Valley locations — including the St. John’s after moving down from what is now part of TwoShoes Ranch at the base of Mount place up Prince Creek, which was part of Sopris. Valley Ranch) in the mid-1920s. They lived in a small house about 200 yards, as Vern figures, southeast of the Pan & Fork restaurant, which would put it east of what is now the River Valley Ranch driving range and in the general vicinity RVR’s Old Town section.

At 15 years old, Vera did most of the chores and jobs that the men and boys did.

They raked and stacked hay, planted and picked potatoes, fed the chickens, turkeys and livestock, milked 26 cows two times a day and more.

“They let us out of school (in the fall) to pick potatoes.”

When asked about her least favorite job, she said “Herding cows … they never stayed where I wanted them to stay.”

On two occasions, Vera’s father-in-law, Felix Diemoz won prizes at Potato Days for his spuds. Where was Vera’s father while Felix was in town at Potato Days? “Working … he (dad) didn’t have time for that.”

Vera and her brothers walked about a mile into town to attend school not far from where the Bridges Center is now located. The family headed further into town once a week, where one of their regular stops was Guido Badgett’s grocery store in the brick building at 55 N. Fourth Street that has been remodeled and is home to Equus Private Wealth Management.

Mostly, the family just bought sugar, flour “and things like that” from the store. “He VERA DIEMOZ page 9

“There seems to be some great belief that we need to be unanimous,” Smith said. “We don’t have to be unanimous. If we wanted to be unanimous, then we don’t need a board of five. We need a board of one.”

Board member Mike Kennedy said he agreed with many of Smith’s arguments and points, adding that it was Smith’s thinking that convinced Kennedy that a two-year sunset clause would be a good idea.

But, he continued, “I would say that once the board makes a decision, all members of that board own that decision. Whatever the vote is … whatever the motion is that’s carried … needs to be followed and pursued by all five members of the board, and I would

If the work was hard, so was the play. It was easy to find a country dance on a Saturday night. “One fella … he played the accordion … polkas … “. It wasn’t uncommon to arrive at a dance at about 9 p.m., head for home at 2 a.m., and get up to milk the cows at 4 a.m. “Those were good days.”

A simple pleasure for Vera and her siblings was to sit by the tracks and wait for

Smith, however, disagreed with Kennedy’s analysis of the situation, and said heatedly, “I’m not subversive (of the district’s efforts).”

Concerning the election, Smith said, “I don’t know what I’m going to do” as far as his role in talking with citizens about the underlying issues.

The exact language of the ballot question was to be worked out at a meeting on Aug. 26, too late for this edition of The Sopris Sun. But at the Aug. 19 meeting it was generally accepted that the voters will be asked to increase the department’s mill levy by approximately 1.75 mills, on top of the current tax rate of 5.903 mills.

A “mill” equals $1 in taxation for every $1,000 in the assessed valuation of real property. A tax increase of 1.75 mills would add roughly $88 to the annual property tax bill

of a home or other property valued by the Garfield County Assessor at $500,000, according to a calculation offered at the Aug. 19 meeting by board member Bob Emerson.

According to the motion to approve the tax hike question, which was made by board member Lou Eller, the money would be used to hire additional paid personnel and to maintain the department’s fire and emergency services at their existing levels.

The current tax-hike discussion traces back to the 2013 ballot question, when the district sought a roughly six-mill tax increase to overcome a 40 percent loss in property tax revenues as a consequence of the Great Recession of 2008-2009.

The 2013 request would have essentially doubled the revenues taken in by the district, but did not come with a sunset clause. That lack of a sunset clause was largely seen as the main reason voters turned the district down.

During the Aug. 19 discussion by the fire board, it was noted that the consultants who drew up the new master plan for district operations estimated that the district might need that much of a revenue boost — perhaps up to six mills-worth of additional tax income — to make up for personnel cutbacks, deferred maintenance and replacement of fire district equipment and other needs.

But after lengthy debate the directors agreed that the increase as proposed — roughly 1.75 mills — would be sufficient to keep the district running at existing service levels for two years.

“It’s enough to get us back on track for a couple of years, it’s small enough that I think the voters will go for it,” Kennedy said, adding that it will provide time for the district to begin implementing recommendations from the consultants and determining what its future fiscal needs will be.

Vera’s mother (Aline), father (Joe) and three brothers emigrated from Italy to the United States in 1908. Her grandfather, grandmother and great-aunt also came from Italy. “There was about 22 of them.”

Their records are still on file at Ellis Island.

Although life for the Montover family was mostly good during their Thompson ranch years, there was also tragedy. In

1926, Vera’s 4-year-old sister, Emma, and 6-year-old sister, Estelle, died of diphtheria and scarlet fever. She helped her mother prepare the girls for burial.

“There was an epidemic and they closed the school … They (Emma and Estelle) died three days apart … that was hard … they are buried on White Hill.”

After the Thompson ranch, the Montover family leased a farm west of Carbondale near Spring Gulch, then moved to Dry Park on part of what is now Crys-

tal River Ranch.

On June 28, 1930, Vera married Fred Diemoz at the Garfield County Courthouse in Glenwood Springs.

Switching back to memories of her Thompson ranch years, Vera said “ … people were really nice.”

Although Carbondale is almost unrecognizable from what it was in the 1920s, Vera said the town is still “a nice place.” She also likes Heritage Park. “I love it here … I feel right at home.”

Classic cars roll on Midland; motorcycles next Sopris Sun Staff Report Downtown Basalt could turn into selďŹ e central from 5 to 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 29.

The reason?

Midland Avenue will be lined with all manner of classic cars. If past Roaring Fork Valley car shows are any indication, look for everything from 1960s muscle cars like the GTO, Roadrunner, Chevy SS 396, Oldsmobile 442 and Z28 Camero, plus Corvettes, restored Detroit iron from the 1920s-1940s, customized Mercs, hot rods, chrome bumpers heavy enough to sink a battle ship and who knows what all.

And what’s all that got to do with shooting selďŹ es? What guy, or gal, wouldn’t look great with all those classy cars backing them up?

Continuing with the wheels theme, on Sept. 1 in front of Alpine Bank, it’s Motorcycles on Midland, starting at 5 p.m.

Basalt takes a bit of a breather, then returns on Sept. 12 with the Willits Wine,

Beer & Cheese Fest with 18 vendors “and counting,â€? plus The Blue Gators from Montrose. The four-piece Blue Gators play a blend of original blues, funk and rock, drawing on inuences ranging from jazz to country to reggae. The instrumentation includes guitars, saxophone, congas and bass, with all three guys and one gal sharing vocalists. New director at the Wyly The Wyly Art Center recent selected Genna Moe as its new executive director, according to a press release. Moe comes on board after a national search conducted by the Wyly Board of Directors and the Aspen Leadership Group. “It is our honor to have Genna as the Wyly’s new director,� said Jay Magidson,

the Wyly board president. “We are all so pleased to welcome her to the Wyly and we love her enthusiasm.�

Genna brings to the Wyly regional experience with arts management and fundraising. “We were really impressed with Genna and look forward to her leadership of the Wyly,� said stated Tim Belinski, board treasurer.

Genna Moe was born and raised in Berkeley, California, graduating from Berkeley Highland then the University of Washington at Seattle with a dual BA in art history and interdisciplinary visual art.

Her studies included a two-year undergraduate art fellowship in Italy. She has worked in arts administration, management, education, programming and fundraising for more than decade. She said she enjoys teamwork that generates lasting public programs of art and culture. “I’m most excited about providing leadership and direction during this exciting time of change and development in Basalt – with the goal of revitalizing the downtown core through the promotion of the arts and the expansion of the Wyly to create an artistic hub of the Roaring Fork Valley,� she said.

By Dr. Diana Sirko Welcome to the 2015-16 school year!

The beginning of school is always exciting and an important occasion. There are few things more impactful than the beginning of a new school year across our three communities. We look forward to greeting our students and their parents, and know that in our rapidly changing world, a high quality education is more important than ever!

We take very seriously our role of preparing kids for the future and know that there is no margin of error, and no chance for our students to get this year back if we don’t do all we can to contribute to their learning.

We continue our work on the five important priorities identified by our community, staff, and students during an extensive strategic planning process two years ago: promoting academic excellence, building strong student character skills including the habits of a scholar, attracting and retaining high quality staff, strategic use of resources, and strong engagement with our communities.

Crew You will see many of these priorities in action at our schools throughout the year.

Most notable will be the presence of a Crew program in each of our schools. Crew time will give all of our K-12 students time to work together to build an inclusive and cohesive group that sets a positive and en-

change. Just a reminder that, at each elementary school, as a result of a grant with the Aspen Community Foundation, we have 10-14 courses for our students to sign up for during this time. In our second year of offering the Enrichment Wednesday programs, we have more and more offerings as a result of our community partnerships.

Please contact your school if you are not already aware of what each school offers during the four nine-week sessions. The cost is only $10 for each session. There is also academic support time available for middle school and high school students while they wait for school activities, games, or practices to begin.

While we know that some of our parents and students were sad to lose late start Mondays, you can see that the change paid off in the quality time we created for professional development. We appreciate the sacrifices that parents make for the Wednesday schedule

Scholarships We finished last year celebrating many student successes with our students receiving almost $900,000 in scholarships between our high schools including two Daniels Scholarship winners and a Boettcher scholarship winner! We look forward to this upcoming school year and will enjoy sharing our students’ successes and accomplishments with you. Please feel free to join us for a student performance or athletic event, even if you don’t have kids in school. I promise you, it will be a pleasurable experience!

KDNK thanks Dear Editor: Holy smokes! Thanks to Mark Hardin II and Carbondale Beer Works, this year’s KDNK Blues & BBQ was extraordinary.

Mark got his formidable friends together to cook local savory meats from local sources.

Flip Wise, from Meat and Cheese, cooked a whole pig that was donated by Potter Farms. The Sustainable Settings lamb was prepared by Ryan Vinciguerra from Slow Groovin’ BBQ. Downvalley Tavern’s Drew Scott roasted goats from Avalanche Cheese Co. Milagro Ranch provided short ribs, which were prepared by Allegria’s Andreas Fischbacher. The brisket and beef from Mountain Primal was prepared by Will Nolan, from Viceroy Snowmass. Local veggie tacos with green stuff from Roaring Gardens were dished up by Mark Hardin II. All gave their time and all food was donated.

Dozens of volunteers put on the party and made things a breeze to set up and break down. Thanks to the KDNK members and DJs and staff, Bill Flanigan for the sound and Evergreen Events for keeping it green. TSC helped us with the backline technology.

KDNK provides public access radio that connects community members to one another and the world. That’s what it’s all about.

Narrow shoulders a drag Dear Editor: Anyone who has recently traveled Highway 133 running between Carbondale and Redstone will have noticed that it has seen improvements. The Colorado Department of Transportation contracted to have loose rocks removed from roadside cliffs and to repave 17 miles of the highway. One might ask, “What’s not to love about a newly paved and striped Scenic Byway?” For an answer to this question ask a cyclist, or if you’re feeling adventurous take a spin along the “improved” section of roadway.

Perhaps CDOT’s recent assertion (Sopris Sun Aug. 6, 2015) is correct in stating that the width of the travel lanes has remained consistent, but the same is not true of the shoulders. Since only the travel lanes were repaved, the edge of the new pavement (ramped berm or 1-inch ledge) falls right in the middle of the meager pre-existing shoulder, making it less safe for riding by forcing bicycle traffic further inward and in some areas on the white line and closer to car traffic.

This section of roadway has been identified as a premier cycling route by Ride the Rockies, Bicycle Tour of Colorado, and the U.S.A. Pro Cycling Challenge. These organizations have played an important role in popularizing cycling and continue to make significant economic contributions to bicycle tourism in the state ($250-$300 annually as reported by a CDOT commissioned study from 2000). Nearby, Gold Level bicycle friendly Carbondale has also partnered with Garfield and Pitkin counties to open the Crystal Valley Trail up to the BRB subdivision.

As any road cyclist that has had the pleasure of pedaling the corridor can attest the gentle grades, beautiful scenery and meandering route along the Crystal River make for a potentially world-class road ride. However, many cyclists forego riding this section of roadway because of the traffic and inadequate shoulders. Still, avid cyclists and those comfortable sharing the road continue to flock to the roadway as evidenced by the scores of riders I witnessed last weekend.

A review of CDOT’s webpage and their Roadway Design Guide might lead one to believe CDOT is serious about accommodating and promoting multi-modal transportation.

However projects such as this one tell another story. Whether intentional or by poor construction practices, this project has degraded the already marginal shoulders along the highway and has decreased the safety for cyclists. Cars should have their 12-13 foot lanes, they need it and sooner or later we all drive.

Dear Editor: The Carbondale Mountain Fair cannot run without our volunteers and Deborah Colley and Sarah Murray kept that scene vibrant, connecting volunteers with fair needs.

The streets around the park would be congested were it not for our fine volunteer parking supervisors Barb Bush and Patty Nadon.

Our T-shirt booth used to just cover the costs of giving away free shirts to our volunteers but thanks to the great work of Laura Stover, and Bailey and Steve Haines, the booth now helps support arts programming all year long.

Staci Dickerson, Melissa Sumera and Angela Bruno went out of their way to keep the shirts

flying off the shelves. Of course having a great design helps a lot and we loved Chris Ford’s design. His art graced the poster, T-shirts and stage, and represented our theme, Eyes of the World in an interesting way. Speaking of eyes, we have to thank Takeo Hiromitsu for his beautiful painting of the raffle bike and the eyes on the back of stage.

The Peace Patrol keeps the fair peaceful and in line with the laws, and this year’s team really made that happen. Kudos to Dave Kanzer, Michael Gorman, and Dallas and Katharine Rushton for promoting the good vibe.

We are proud of our Green Team. Thanks to Jason White, Mark Weinhold, Annie Worley and Phi Filerman. There were many Green Team supervisors that went more than the distance and we really appreciate all of them. A HUGE thank-you goes to R.A. Nelson Construction for sponsoring Green Team this year.

Michael Bennet has cast his vote for Planned Parenthood. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a shame that he wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t listen to anybody that has written him asking him to not fund Planned Parenthood. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been proven that this organization is squandering money on things that are not right.
