Carbondale Commentary Medical marijuana legislation: It’s the government on steroids Now, my experience with the evil weed goes back to when I grew up here in Carbondale.

It was readily available in middle school back in the 1970s. In Idaho they brought it down from Canada as “BC Bud” and in Montana, medical marijuana was approved in 2004. This year the Colorado legislature passed HB 1284 regulating the use of medical marijuana. The bill is 60 pages long. Montana’s law is two pages.

Looking at the bill it appears that our Colorado legislators got their education on medical marijuana from a 1930s government film called “Reefer Madness.” It depicts people smoking it and going crazy with hallucinations and terrible torment. People that saw it and smoked MJ later refer to it as the BIg LIE. If they lied about this, what else are they lying about?

From my twisted perspective, Colorado’s law is so full of contradictions and confusion the only winners are going to be the lawyers. In the year 2000, approximately 878,000 voters passed Constitutional Amendment 20 approving the use of it for medical reasons. The feds still considered it illegal and most people were confused about where the legal ground was. Then Barack said the feds got better things to do and let’s leave it alone.

When the esteemed legislators started working on it in November 2009, there were about 30,000 registered patients, and the legislature calculated that they might have about $250,000 in the Marijuana Cash Fund that could fund the registry and make a little extra for the Colorado Department of Revenue. Last week the Registry reported that as of June they estimate that about 105,000 patients have applied. At $90 an application the state earned a quick $1 million and with renewals they get this every year! The bill now dictates how they are going to spend $10 million in expected revenues!

Colorado is mainly after the money. They just announced that they received over $7.4 million just in Medical Marijuana Center applications. Is this money supposed to buy social acceptance?

HB 1284 looks like a jobs bill, with most of that cash going to expand bureaucracy. The Department of Revenue is going to get 110 new fully certified peace officers. That’s the equivalent of a new state patrol office. They will have statewide authority to enforce medical marijuana laws and“other laws of the State of Colorado”in their spare time. Each of these officers will get a gun, and a car, and a computer and an office and lots of training. If Carbondale ends up with the 12 MMC’s that are currently in business we could get a new cop in town. With all the fixings. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation will get two and a half full-time employees and over $500,000 just to do background checks and criminal investigations.

The application for a Medical Marijuana Center (MMC) runs 23 pages and with attachments and required documentation can get to over 90 pages! You’re required to disclose all business dealings, property transactions, financial transactions, shoe sizes and hunting buddies for the past 10 years. Applicants for cops or political office don’t have to submit this much stuff! We hold MMCs to a higher standard than we do the people that are writing the law. If you make one little mistake they can reject the application and send you to jail with fines up to $100,000.

The Senate in SB 109 couldn’t find much to add to the House bill except that they decided that we better look at these doctors that are signing these patient applications.

They MANDATED that CBI investigate five doctors a year. Not based on complaints or suspicion, just dig into doctors’ records for fun and profit. One of the approved uses of this drug is for pain control. What drug agent is gong to be able to tell how much pain a person is in? Talk about subjective judgment.

All this to control a substance that has been both illegal and widely used for over 70 years.

Does the legislature think that 100,000 people just took up this drug when it was declared a medical aid? What about the other 700,000 that voted for Amendment 20? All this heavyhanded approach is going to do is drive the market back underground and out of the hands of mom and pop operations and back into the hands of the Mexican drug cartels. No one has figured out how to tax them yet.

Carbondale Police Chief gene Schilling testified at the town council hearings that he has received no complaints and has had no problems with the existing dispensaries. One cop was overheard to say after Mountain Fair weekend “We’ll take the stoners over the drunks every day.”

Check out RFCC discussions Dear Editor: On Aug. 7, I attended the Roaring Fork Cultural Council’s discussion with Walter Isaacson regarding changes in the media business. It was moderated very well by Michael Conniff. Isaacson is one of the most well informed individuals in the country today, as exemplified by his current position as president and CEO of the Aspen Institute. He spoke to a full house and it was a thoroughly informative and enjoyable evening. From the high quality of the questions it was clear that the audience also found the event worthwhile.

This is just one more example of how fortunate the downvalley community is to have the Roaring Fork Cultural Council bringing speakers of this quality to the Thunder River Theatre in Carbondale to have a dialogue with local residents at a ticket cost of only $10. I strongly recommend that those who have not taken advantage of this wonderful program do so at their earliest convenience. Finale page turns for Novel-Tea bookstore

You heard it all the time in Carbondale, back in the 1980s and 1990s. “Carbondale needs a bookstore,” they said.

Coming out of the 1960s, after the town had withered for decades like a waterstarved potato plant, Carbondale had been on a cultural and economic roll with a community access radio station, an arts council and a homegrown newspaper that focused on the funk. Carbondale grew the Mountain Fair. The Crystal Theatre opened in what was a condemned part of the Dinkle Building. The Main Street gallery & Framer took root. The Pour House thrived after replacing the Dusty Rose in a 100year-old Main Street slot.

Just about all that was missing for some folks, Birkenstocks or not, was a bookstore.

In 1994, the late Barbara Anderson gave the town one. “She thought there was a need,” her daughter, Wendy, told The Sopris Sun this week.

Feeling the stress brought on when Amazon started devouring the retail book market in the late 1990s, which Wendy said affected her mom’s health, Barbara passed the store to her daughter in 2000. In 2005, Wendy sold the store to Lori Hutchens, who once worked at Crystal River Elementary School, and before that for 15 years owned and operated a glass-blowing business with her then husband.

“I bought the store when I sold my townhouse, but I’d wanted to buy it when I was at Crystal River Elementary,” Hutchens said while ringing up a steady stream of customers who were snatching up books at half-price on Monday. “My family and I love books.”

Word of Novel-Tea’s closure spread word of mouth through town ever since the “going out of Business” and “50 per-

cent off” signs appeared in the big windows that face Main Street from the Dinkle Building. During this interview, one regular customer came in and said she’d just heard the news that not only was Novel-Tea closing, a yoga studio is taking its place. “I’m so sad,” she told Hutchens.

“Some yoga dude is coming in?”

With Amazon, chain stores and other retailers putting mom and pop operations out of business all over the United States, closures such as Novel-Tea common these days. Basalt lost its book store about a year ago, and that store was attached to some pretty deep pockets. Hutchens pockets are not so deep. “I haven’t had a paycheck in six months,” she said. “It’s all gone to paying the rent (and other expenses).” One of the last retail lessons Hutchens learned, which a friend told her, was to pay herself first. “But Carbondale needs a bookstore. … I was hoping the economy would change.”

Hutchens said she’d been in arrears with her rent ever since the recession hit two years ago. The first three years in the store she’d done OK, and made some changes to expand her line, including cards, CDs and gift items, but those new items “didn’t pay the bills.” Since just after Christmas 2008, she’s had no employees, other than when her daughter, Jennifer Beuter, filled in. “People don’t have the money to shop,” she explained.

Novel-Tea is located in the “newer” end of the Dinkle Building (the one-story section), one door east of the Floral Boutique and right next to green Miracles. The store is about 20 feet wide and 100 feet deep, with an airy 15-foot ceiling (which is the building’s original beaded board).

Missouri Heights Democrat seeks state House seat

By David Frey Sopris Sun Correspondent Roger Wilson has one of the most challenging campaigns in what has become one of the strangest races of the state.

A Democrat who lives on Missouri Heights, Wilson is running for Kathleen Curry’s seat in the state House of Representatives. He has the party’s backing after Curry renounced the Democrats to run as an independent.

But he’s running in a large district against Republican challenger Luke Korkowski, a Crested Butte lawyer, and Curry, a gunnison rancher who is mounting an aggressive write-in campaign to return to her seat.

Ordinarily, write-in candidates stand a slim chance of winning, but Curry is confident she can retake the seat and she has supporters across party lines, particularly Democrats, who back her.

That has Wilson trying to beat a Republican whose views he opposes, and an independent whose views aren’t so different from his own, but who could split Democratic votes with him.

“I couldn’t abandon the district, and that’s what I felt would be happening,” said

Wilson, chief technical officer for a children’s education Web site, starfall.com and Blue Mountain Arts. “By abandoning it, I felt the values that I care about would be sacrificed if someone competent didn’t step in.”

Wilson said he supports efforts to move Colorado to the forefront of alternative energy, what gov. Bill Ritter has called the “new energy economy,” and said he supports incentives for new jobs in these industries in the state.

Wilson said he also supports protections for the environment and is wary of state budget cuts to things like state parks that could turn away tourism.

“If people come to Colorado and the parks are closed, which has happened in California, that’s not good for all the businesses that depend on tourist dollars,” Wilson said. “What I believe I offer is to focus in a creative way how cuts can be made without significantly affecting the things that provide an income to Colorado and Colorado’s capability to grow new jobs in the next decade.”

He said he worried about Korkowski’s call for tax cuts at a time the state budget is in crisis.

Such cuts “would be disastrous in terms of human health and services,”Wilson said.

Wilson said the education budget, the largest item in the state general fund, must be cut, but he said cuts should not threaten “core programs.” The cuts are a “tragedy,” Wilson said, but are probably inevitable.

Wilson differs most sharply with Korkowski, but it’s Curry who presents the biggest challenge because of her name recognition and ability to take away Democratic votes.

“I would hope that she would care enough about the issues to drop out, but her issue is all about the election process,” Wilson said.

He added, clarifying: “I know that Kathleen cares about the issues of the district, but if she wanted to be certain the issues were the top priority she would drop out rather than risking the vote go to the Republican opponent.”

Curry is launching a campaign specifically designed to encourage voters to write her in as a candidate. Voters must not only write in her first and last names; they must also mark the “write-in” box or the vote won’t count.

Roger Wilson. Courtesy photo Wilson came into the race late, and is trailing in fund-raising behind both opponents. He had brought in $2,641 at the beginning of August, compared to Korkowski’s $3,130 and Curry’s $28,136.

Last week he launched a listening tour throughout the district, carrying him from glenwood Springs to gunnison, and Lake City to New Castle.

News Briefs Re-1 schools start on Monday

Trustees cut brewpub some slack

School is back in session beginning Monday, Aug. 23 and with it comes the flutter of nervous excitement for local kids and the flashing of the yellow “School Zone” lights for local drivers.

The first day of school for students in the Roaring Fork Re-1 School District (RFSD) includes Carbondale Community, Crystal River Elementary, Carbondale Middle, Roaring Fork High and Bridges High schools.

Ross Montessori School is back in session on Tuesday, Aug. 24; the Waldorf School on the Roaring Fork resumes Monday, Aug. 30; and Colorado Rocky Mountain School students begin their academic semester on Sept. 3.

The Carbondale Police Department is reminding motorists to be especially careful and pay attention while driving through the school zones.

The speed limit is 15 miles per hour on Snowmass Drive during school hours (7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.). On Highway 133, two intersections have special speed limits during peak times: at Sopris Avenue/Hendrick Drive and at Snowmass Drive, where the speed limit is 25 mph when the yellow flashing lights are on. The speed limit on Merrill Avenue, alongside Ross Montessori, is 15 mph when children are present.

The Carbondale Board of Trustees voted 6-0 Tuesday night to delay collecting water and sewer tap fees, and the water rights dedication fee, on Carbondale Beer Works brewpub until after the new establishment gets its certificate of occupancy.

Owner Jeff Dahl told the trustees that he’s waiting for his Small Business Administration loan to come through and simply can’t afford the fees at this time. Dahl said the building, located on Main Street in front of the post office in the former Carbonale Council on Arts and Humanties/Artists Collective building, is still under construction and that having to pay all his fees up front “will stop everything.”

The trustees said the town might loan Dahl the money for the fees, which total $30,180, through its revolving loan fund.

Town’s sales tax collections increase Carbondale’s sales tax collections for June were up 1.9 percent compared to June 2009, according to finance director Nancy Barnett.

The increase was the first since October 2008.

Year-to-date through June, however, sales collections are still down 8.7 percent compared to 2009.

GarCo sheriff candidates spar over leadership style

By David Frey Sopris Sun Correspondent gLENWOOD SPRINgS – The November elections bring a rematch between garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario and Carbondale resident Tom Dalessandri, the former sheriff Vallario defeated eight years earlier.

The race brings two very different approaches to the office, and comes after building controversy in Vallario’s sheriff department.

Disagreements over Vallario’s leadership became clear in this month’s Republican primary battle, when Vallario narrowly defeated a challenge from upstart Doug Winters, who ran against him. Winters, an Eagle County deputy who lives in Rifle, came within 78 votes of Vallario, who won with just 51 percent of the vote.

Vallario downplayed the division in the party, arguing that only about a quarter of the county’s Republicans voted in the primary. He asked Winters’ supporters to put aside “isolated issues” and support him. “given the results of this election, it is clear that the alleged issues that have been brought up during this campaign regarding my leadership of the Sheriff’s Office were not divisive. Certainly not with Republican voters,” Vallario said in a statement.

Vallario said the advances in the department in the eight years he has succeeded Dalessandri in office speak for themselves.

“I think overall the sheriff’s office has

done a great job,” he said. “I’m not trying to pat myself on the back, but it’s under my leadership.”

Dalessandri, a Democrat, said Vallario has become removed from what the community wants from its sheriff and has built the department into a metro-style force.

“I want to bring common sense management and leadership back to the department,” Dalessandri said. “I want to get the department back in touch with the community and I want to be accountable to the community.”

Divisions within the department got a public airing when staffers sent an anonymous email to garfield County commissioners alleging ethics violations and criminal wrongdoing. A district attorney’s investigation found no criminal violations, but the investigation report revealed deep divisions within the department and concerns about Vallario’s romantic relationship with a detention sergeant.

Vallario recently has also been criticized for instituting a rigorous background check for search and rescue volunteers, a move that alienated some longtime volunteers.

He was also criticized for the purchase of a $250,000 armored BearCat vehicle, which critics liken to a tank.

Dalessandri, who has been running a private security firm, said both the background check and the BearCat would go if he’s sheriff.

“His management style is very different

than mine,” he said. “Personally, I think the way we ran the department is more consistent with the way people want it in the county.”

Dalessandri didn’t wear a gun on the job. Vallario does. Vallario has called himself a “cop’s cop.” Dalessandri calls himself a “people’s sheriff.”

“The BearCat is out of place in garfield County,” he said.

“It’s a tool for urban and metro warfare,” he said. “If you’re in lower East L.A. there might be a function for it.”

Dalessandri also criticizes Vallario for his decision to build a new $3 million facility in western garfield County. “The sheriff’s budget doubled to $18 million this year since he was in office,” Dalessandri said, and added some 50 new staffers. “Those expenses were out of scale with the growth of the county.”

“It just goes on and on and on,” he said. “It’s boys and toys. It’s empire building. He’s surrounded himself with people that he’s promoted. They’re highly dedicated to him because he’s given them huge promotions. They’re there to protect him and keep him insulated.”

Vallario defended his spending. With growth heaviest in western garfield County, it made sense to build the new facility, he said, and thanks to grants and competitive bids, the county only paid about $2 million for it.

“I think that’s good business sense,” he

said. “I think it’s the perfect time to build it and we’re building for future growth.

We’ve outgrown this building [in glenwood Springs]. We have to look at spreading out our folks and providing services to the west end.”

Vallario has long defended the BearCat purchase as needed to protect members of his SWAT-like All Hazards Response Team.

“What’s next? We’re going to take away bullet-proof vests because we don’t really need those because we don’t get shot at very often?”

Vallario said he has expanded his department due to increased needs. In the past five years, calls for service jumped from 96 calls a day to more than 230 calls a day.

“There was a need to grow with the demands of the community,” he said. “I won’t apologize for growing the department and increasing staffing to meet those needs.”

Vallario said his department has been dedicated to preparing for the future, and increasing community programs on issues like gangs and methamphetamine use.

Dalessandri said Vallario has been out of touch with the public and wants to bring more accountability to the office.

“It’s not about sour grapes,” he said.

“It’s really about leadership. Common sense leadership in my opinion. I don’t like watching those hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars, being spent on toys and his need to build a metro sheriff department.”

Electrically charged Mountain Fair on track financially

By Trina Ortega Sopris Sun Correspondent Even with a power outage during the closing act Saturday night, the Carbondale Mountain Fair was filled with positive energy and fair Director Amy Kimberly says that will show in healthy financial returns for this year’s event.

Although the final numbers have yet to be entered into the books, Kimberly said preliminary estimates show that proceeds from the 39th Carbondale Mountain Fair will be on par with previous years, netting between $40,000 to $50,000 for the fair’s beneficiary, the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities (CCAH).

“We don’t have the exact numbers yet, but it’s going to come close to what it always does,” Kimberly said. “The response from the arts and crafts vendors is that it was good.”

Kimberly said that some vendors acknowledged that Carbondale fair numbers are better because of timing: the economy is also starting to perk up and people are slowly starting to spend money again.

Overall, she said, the recession did not hurt this year’s fair, which was held in Sopris Park on July 23-25.

The 160 or so arts and crafts vendors are critical to the fair because each artisan pays a booth space fee of $250. “They basically pay for this celebration. That’s why it’s so important that people make purchases at the fair.”

As far as straight profit goes, though, the cantina yields the majority of the fair’s income, according to Kimberly, and this year’s power outage appeared to boost sales on Saturday night.

“We’re going to try to do that every year,” Kimberly said of what she said turned out to be her favorite part of the weekend. The outage zapped the electricity but everyone rolled with it: the closing act, Band of Heathens, projected their sound

through a megaphone, the dance crowd kept pace, the Carbondale police helped by providing power from their mobile emergency station alongside the park and Police Chief gene Schilling even ran home to get a generator.

Kimberly said it costs about $150,000 (including staff pay) to produce the fair, but roughly 300 volunteers also step in to help organize the event and fill shifts through the weekend.

“It’s a lot of work for the return you get back. It’s a year’s worth of work,” Kimberly explained, adding that she has been approached time and again by corporate sponsors to help fund the event in exchange for advertising in the way of banners, cups and more.

“I don’t think that’s what Mountain Fair is really about. It’s about celebrating this community. As long as we stick to that, we’ll be all right. We always have to keep the integrity intact,” Kimberly said.

Although the buzz about this year’s “high brow hippie fest” has died down, Kimberly is already getting charged for next year, which will mark the fair’s 40th.

She is forming a special steering committee to help organize the landmark year. Also in the works, is a commemorative cookbook with local bakers’ pie and cake recipes, stories about Carbondale’s unique personalities, remembrances of fairs past, and historical photographs.

“It’s a great thing to look forward to,” Kimberly said. “It’s amazing that a lot of the people who were here for year one will be here for year 40.”

From her cash register perch through the window, Main Street Carbondale looks just like Main Street in Tipp City, Ohio, where Hutchens grew up. “Tipp City even has railroad tracks at the end of the street, just like Carbondale,” she said as a pair of elderly woman approached the cash register and asked whether Hutchens had any large-print books.“I’ve only got one left,” she said, directing the women to a section of book shelf that used to carry many more. “It’s Judy Picoult. She’s well known.”

Through her years at the store, Hutchens enjoyed creating an eclectic inventory, based on reviews she read and also knowing the tastes of the town. “Carbondale is a progressive town.” Authors you wouldn’t find at Novel-Tea included Sarah Palin. “Although I’d special order it for you.”

Hutchens said she doesn’t blame anyone for her store’s demise, but does blame the recession, Amazon and new electronic devices such as Kindle and iPads. Hutchens said there are many people who don’t understand that to shop on the Internet means they are taking business away from locals who are there on Main Street to serve them.

For example, not that long ago two women came in and were looking at books.

Then one pulled out her smart phone, compared prices to those at Novel-Tea, then said to the other as they walked out,“We can get it for $6.47 on Amazon.”

“People shop a lot on computers now,” she said.

Hutchens said she has until Sept. 10 to vacate the store, but would like to be out by Aug. 30. “It’s just too painful to come in here every day.”

Hutchens said she learned her landlord was making her leave when a man came in one day and announced that he was moving in on Oct. 1. “That’s how I found out.”

Still, Hutchens doesn’t blame her landlord for her store’s closure. “It’s just business.

He gave me two years (to try to come into compliance with her lease).”

Hutchens, who at 52 is a young-looking grandmother, with straight blonde hair and reading glasses that slip down on her nose, said she’s not worried about her future. She plans to get a master’s degree in Spanish and already has three job offers. “It’ll be nice to start getting a paycheck,” she joked.

While customers are sad to see the Novel-Tea go, Hutchens is sad the town will lose a community asset. “Book stores are a landmark in a community.”

Wendy Anderson said she is sad to see her mother’s dream pass away. Wendy enjoyed the store, especially placing special orders for people. “But now, people are ordering more online,” she said.

Anderson mentions the same reasons as Hutchens for the closing of Novel-Tea: the recession, the Internet, Amazon, Kindle and iPads. She doesn’t blame the Novel-Tea’s demise completely on the Internet and electronics and doesn’t begrudge their success. The real issue is right here in Carbondale.

“I’m disappointed in the town for not committing to local businesses,” Anderson said.

KDNK pirates Carbondale for Blues & BBQ, membership drive Sopris Sun Staff Report Community access radio station KDNK pirates Carbondale for its fall membership drive, offering all manner of hard-to-find booty, plus Captain Hook’s gong-A-Thon, blues music and maybe even a high-seas ditty or two.

“We want to highlight KDNK’s rebellious spirit and have some high-seas fun while we celebrate the fact that KDNK is a community treasure,” said KDNK general Manager Steve Skinner.

The membership drive theme is “KDNK, A Community Treasure” and runs from Aug. 21 through Sept. 3, with a goal of $60,000.

“I think our membership drives are more of a celebration than a radio-thon. That’s why we are recording the entire drive, day and night for two weeks and putting the recording in a time capsule to be opened when KDNK celebrates its 100th birthday, ” Skinner said.

“We want to get all the member’s names on the air to preserve for eternity,” he added.

“KDNK is a community treasure and we all really dig it,” Skinner added. “We’re askin’ all ye, even landlubbers, to join the crew.”

Folk singer and grand matriarch of the desert canyon rivers, Katie Lee will perform live on Sept. 2 at the Wheeler Opera House. “Her writing, music and images bring the loss of glen Canyon back into that tender area of your heart,” Skinner said.

Folks who join or renew their KDNK memberships before 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 23, are eligible for a treasure chest drawing that includes prizes such as food and drink from Restaurant Six89, Juicy Lucy’s, Il Poggio, Takah Sushi and Zheng Asian Bistro.

It is best to keep windows and doors securely locked, especially at night. If a bear enters your home, open doors and leave the bear an escape route.

He worked as a graphic artist and photographer and served as art director, public relations manager and director of strategic planning during the early years of the Boulder greeting card and book publisher Blue Mountain Arts.

He was a system and software engineer with Lockheed Martin, working on projects that included the Hubble space telescope, Iridium satellite phone and national security systems.

Robin Sutherland reflects on his Carbondale years

By Lynn Burton The Sopris Sun Robin Sutherlandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Aug. 20 concert is not only a rare treat for those of a classical bent, but for local newspaper editors who enjoy a good read. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rare treatâ&#x20AC;? doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t begin to describe the press release that Sutherland sent The Sopris Sun, in which he refers to the killer winter of 1971-72 in the late gary McNultyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tiny cabin up Cattle Creek, his tenure as an early CCAH board member (when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;officeâ&#x20AC;? consisted of Laurie Loebâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kitchen table) and his charter-member status on the legendary â&#x20AC;&#x153;A-Teamâ&#x20AC;? (whose members would reportedly take a bullet or just about anything else in their roles as Mountain Fairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nocturnal security force).

Sutherland said in his limited-edition press release that those years in the early 1970s in Carbondale were a â&#x20AC;&#x153;magical timeâ&#x20AC;? that he wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t trade for anything, andâ&#x20AC;&#x153;Friendships began then that are still, despite time and geography, wonderfully strong and cherished.â&#x20AC;?

So how did Sutherland, pianist for the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and noted â&#x20AC;&#x153;goldberg Variationsâ&#x20AC;? interpreter, come to land at Carbondaleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Colorado Rocky Mountain School in the first place, return to earn an AA degree at Colorado Mountain College, then return numerous other times during the next 35 years?

Sutherlandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s self-penned press release seems evasive by design in some places, and tongue in cheek in others, but he confirms he

was born in Denver, and â&#x20AC;&#x153;fell into the clutchesâ&#x20AC;? of the University of Northern Coloradoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dr. Rita Hutcherson (head of the piano department) at the age of four. As for his time at CRMS, he would have been in the Class of â&#x20AC;&#x2122;69 â&#x20AC;&#x153;but nooooooo.â&#x20AC;? Ask him what high school he graduated from and heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll say â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whatevs.â&#x20AC;? He might also point out that today he is one of only four people who has been awarded an honorary CRMS alumnus diploma. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was the first,â&#x20AC;? he said.

After attending Julliard, where he was a member of the celebrated studio of Rosina Lhevinne, Sutherlandâ&#x20AC;&#x153;lost no timeâ&#x20AC;?in returning to the valley, where he â&#x20AC;&#x153;wormedâ&#x20AC;? his way into the lives of some important people (including george Stricker and the late Elbie gann) and inaugurated the artist-in-residence program at Colorado Mountain College. (For readers who are trying to establish a firm timeline, technically, Sutherland earned his two-year AA from CMC in 1972 after starting the artist-in-residence program.)

Sutherland reports he is an alumnus of the Aspen Music Festival (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Julliardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Welcome Matâ&#x20AC;?) and also the University of Hawaii. He recounts that years before his own arrival in Hawaii, another Colorado boy (named Sam) fell in love with the Hawaii islands. Sam jumped ship (â&#x20AC;&#x153;literallyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;) and stayed on to become Dr. Samuel H. Elbert, who Sutherland describes as â&#x20AC;&#x153;the greatest authority on Pacific languages and linguistics, head of that department at the University, and designated Living Treasure of Hawaii. They have those there.â&#x20AC;?

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Also, Dr. Elbertâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family in Colorado werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exactly nobodies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; his namesake was a Colorado governor and, if you think of the highest peak in the Colorado Rockies, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll get the general idea.â&#x20AC;? Sutherland said he was â&#x20AC;&#x153;lucky enoughâ&#x20AC;? to be among the last of Dr. Elbertâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s many students and that even though

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Friendships began then that are still, despite time and geography, wonderfully strong and cherished.â&#x20AC;? fluency in the Hawaii language plus one dollar and a candy store will get you one dollarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth of candy, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still proud of his command of the Hawaiian language, â&#x20AC;&#x153;considering how seemingly far afieldâ&#x20AC;? it is from what he does most of the time â&#x20AC;&#x201C; playing the piano.

Sutherland isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afraid to take a moral or political stand. He said he was â&#x20AC;&#x153;dismayedâ&#x20AC;? when Colorado voters approved the now-infamous Amendment 2 in the 1990s, which he calls a â&#x20AC;&#x153;hate-filled piece of anti-gay legislation.â&#x20AC;? Had the Colorado Supreme Court not overturned the amendment, he would have had to â&#x20AC;&#x153;make goodâ&#x20AC;? on his vow never to perform in Colorado again and that would have all but killed him. He said heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

still trying to figure out the logic of Amendment 2: â&#x20AC;&#x153;To hate me is fine, but I insist that you at least get to know me.â&#x20AC;?

Sutherlandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s press release states that in real life he holds the Jean and Bill Lane Principal Chair in Keyboards for the San Francisco Symphony, a position created for him by Seiji Ozawa in 1973. (google â&#x20AC;&#x153;Seiji Ozawa plays the bluesâ&#x20AC;? and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll get a sense of who he is, but this article is not about him).

Based on some of the comments taken from Sutherlandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s press release, you might picture him as some sort of Carbondale version of Victor Borge, cracking jokes during concerts and TV appearances without a lot of actual piano playing, but this would not be the case. Sutherland is respected worldwide, especially for his interpretations of Mozart, and Bachâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;goldberg Variations.â&#x20AC;? About his â&#x20AC;&#x153;goldberg Variationsâ&#x20AC;? recordings, Newhouse News Service observed,â&#x20AC;&#x153;Robin Sutherland has given us what may well be the most satisfying â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;goldberg Variationsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; available.â&#x20AC;?

Sutherland said he will make brief comments before each segment of the concert, which will include the works of Bach, Tenenbaum, Brahms and grieg.

The concert will be dedicated to the late Ron Robertson and John Palmer.

The Aug. 20 concert starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Third Street Center, located at 520 S. Third Street. Tickets are $60 and can be reserved at 963-1680. The concert is a benefit for the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities. A reception follows.

Here is the low down on grass-fed beef The history of beef in America is colorful and fascinating, with some great stories as well as many aspects most people prefer not to think about. The saga begins in the early 1500s, when the Spanish conquistador Cortez brought Andalusian cattle to Mexico. Those cattle eventually turned feral and “immigrated” into the future Texas, where they developed into the iconic wild longhorns.

Back east, English pilgrims brought over dairy cattle and oxen. Eventually, these and the Texas herds spread until they met, creating the first crossbreeds and forming the basis for the beef cattle industry.

In the late 1860s, wealthy northeasterners developed an interest in eating “exotic” wild beef, shipped all the way from Texas, where the cows were tended by equally exotic cowboys.

This growing demand led to the brief era of cattle drives, in which herds were driven to the nearest rail lines, where they grazed until fall, when they were processed and shipped. Heavily romanticized, there have probably been more cattle drives in movies than ever ocBy Chef George Bohmfalk curred over their 20-year history. All of these cows were entirely grass-fed, as no one knew a different way to raise cattle.

By 1890, Chicago had become the national beef center. Herds were driven there, where inner-city grass was scarce but there was a surplus of corn. The scrawny cows rapidly gained more weight than ever before on this “finishing” grain diet, and diners quickly developed a taste for their fattier and more tender meat.

As America grew more affluent, the demand for corn-fed beef grew. Nearly every steer in the U.S. followed the same path: a few months on mother’s milk, a few more in a pasture, then off to a crowded feedlot, to fatten up on high-calorie corn. Americans no longer knew what an American symbol naturally tasted like. Beef went from being a luxury meal to a relatively inexpensive fast-food commodity.

Then we started hearing that red meat was clogging our arteries, and we became concerned about the widespread use of antibiotics and hormones. Many of us also questioned

the ethics of treating animals and our environment in this industrial way.

A recent movement began with some ranchers committed to the original “pure” practices – all-grass diets, no antibiotics or hormones, no feedlots. Tradeoffs were required: corn-fed and hormone-treated cows reach ideal weight at 12-14 months; it takes up to three years to achieve that weight on grass.

Ranchers must also determine which breeds most efficiently convert grass to meat, whereas just about any breed can be fattened on corn, soy and other grains. Here in the midvalley, the Jacober family (of Crystal River Meats) point out that some of the original pasture-raised cows in America were Herefords, so they raise purebreds and some crossed with Angus. Felix and Sarah Tornare, of Milagro Ranch on Missouri Heights, are happy with the favorable “meat-to-bone ratio” of their handsome and smaller Australian Lowlines.

Consumers must make choices as well. grass-fed beef tastes a bit different from what we’ve been conditioned to. Whereas corn-fed beef tastes about the same, grass-fed meat will reflect the grasses of different regions.

Because the market is weighted toward corn-fed beef, there are fewer options with grass-fed. Most grass-fed beef is available only frozen, from individual dealers. I had long held a prejudice against frozen beef as being less tender and juicy, so I did a side-by-side comparison with identical steaks, one of which I froze and thawed. Any difference was so subtle as to be ignored, so I now feel comfortable buying frozen grass-fed steaks.

Because those steaks are leaner, grass-fed meat is generally not given USDA grades, although it is inspected. grass-fed enthusiasts happily trade a bit less tenderness for different flavors and the satisfaction of knowing how beef naturally tastes.

A large percentage of all beef meat is ground, after which tenderness is pretty moot. Many Carbondale restaurants serve grass-fed hamburgers, sausages and other ground-beef preparations from locally-raised cows, so that’s a great way to sample and support this natural-style beef. In addition to buying your own cuts, from Crystal River Meats or Milagro Ranch, you can try a 50-day dry-aged Milagro Ranch rib eye at Montagna, the upscale restaurant in Aspen.

If you like the idea and taste of grass-fed beef, ask your favorite restaurants and grocers about offering it. This is a consumer-driven movement; suppliers will be happy to respond.

disappointing to find them speaking against what many of them feel is dear to their hearts and necessary to their lives. I believe if the bikers studied the proposal maps, the majority would be pleased with the areas selected for preservation as well as the areas left out of the proposal to allow for continued use of treasured trails.

I mistakenly believed national forest areas were protected. Unfortunately only about a third of the White River National Forest – mostly at higher elevations – is federally designated wilderness. The rest has no permanent protection against drilling, logging or mining. Hidden gems would extend wilderness protection to

areas at biologically richer mid-elevations.

People have a right to argue for their self-interests, but I’d like to suggest we also consider some higher principles in this debate.

I speak for many who value the existence of these wild and undisturbed areas. I hope we can come together for the common good of respecting and appreciating these special places. The Hidden gems proposal will ensure these undisturbed natural areas will endure for our children and future generations. Hidden gems is a legacy I am proud to support.

INVITATION TO BID Sealed bids will be received by the Town of Carbondale (owner) at Carbondale Town Hall, 511 Colorado Avenue, Carbondale,Colorado until 2:00 p.m.,Tuesday,August 31, 2010 for the Town of Carbondale Main Street/Snowmass Intersection Improvements. The bid package consists of: • Main Street/Snowmass Intersection-Installing streetscape and pedestrian improvements on Main Street and Snowmass Avenue, including demolishing and removal of sidewalk, curb and gutter and existing street sections,installation of new sidewalks,curb and gutter and pedestrian “bulb outs”, crosswalks, asphalt, valley pans, pedestrian trail,and landscaping.

The Town would like the bidder to understand that the work is to be completed this fall.

The contractor shall submit with their bid company qualifications and references for similar size and scope projects.

All bids must be in accordance with the bidding documents on file with the Town of Carbondale and at the office of the Engineer,Sopris Engineering,502 Main Street,Carbondale Colorado, 81623. Copies of the bidding documents may be obtained from Sopris Engineering at the address contained herein on Wednesday, August 18th 2010 beginning at 10:00 am. A nonrefundable charge for all documents obtained will be $15.
