e shocking truth about electricity bills

By Patrick Hunter What can be more exciting than electricity — a “shocking” subject.

Or maybe you find your bills too shocking.

You shouldn’t, not here in Carbondale.

My cost per kWh last month was 12.2 cents. If I lived in New England, I might have paid almost 22 cents. In Hawaii, they pay nearly 27 cents.

The national average is 12.8 cents.

Our cost for electricity is considered too low by some. There are a number of alternative energy ideas that people would like to pursue, but at such a relatively low cost the payback takes more years than seems reasonable. Those alternative energy options include solar arrays, hydroelectric, biomass and wind.

Some of us from the Carbondale Environmental Board were just at a meeting with Xcel Energy, which is the main provider in Carbondale. Xcel has initiated a community-support effort called Partners in Energy that aims to help communities in Colorado address the larger issues concerning energy into the future.

The organizing group for Partners in Energy

was Garfield Clean Energy (GCE). Garfield Clean Energy brings together the governments of Garfield County and its towns. Xcel Energy and GCE held a Partners in Energy stakeholders workshop in New Castle on Aug. 11 that attracted people. This was the first step in a process that will identify areas for more efficiency and to help us pool our resources.

The driving force behind this effort from Xcel is first their desire to be a positive player in the Colorado energy market, but is also a requirement from the State of Colorado to see utility companies work with communities in a process known as “demand side management” (DSM).

The State of Colorado’s Energy Report recognizes and supports additional economic growth in the state, but at the same time calls for increased efficiencies and better technologies. In a sense, the goal is to continue to provide sufficient energy but without having to build additional fossil-fuel-fired production facilities for the larger population and economy.

The state’s plan requires that utility com-

panies offer a mix of sources for their electricity. The plan also requires that certain reductions in total sales and in total demand take place by 2018.

Some of the programs that are being implemented are improvements to buildings, both old and on the drawing boards. We now have systems that require more efficiency, and programs are just being approved for improvements to be more affordable. One such program is PACE, an acronym for “property assessed clean energy” financing. PACE is being adopted nationwide. Property owners are able to obtain multi-year financing that is attached to the property and continues to the next owner when sold.

Good things are happening and the Town of Carbondale, the Carbondale Environmental Board, CLEER, GCE, Holy Cross and Xcel are all working for you to make electricity an even better deal.

Hike Hope Heal Dear Editor: A few weeks ago there was a post on Roaring Fork Swap Facebook page about the idea of starting a GoFundMe page to support valleywide community members in need of mental health treatment. Thankfully, a colleague of mine tagged me to confirm that a fund already exists!

In fact, in 2011, Lawrence and Joan Altman set up the mental health fund at the Aspen Community Foundation to help subsidize the cost of care for those individuals from Aspen to Parachute that could otherwise not afford services. Since then, hundreds of individuals have been and continue to be supported.

In 2013, Aspen Strong, a non-profit organization started with the support of Lawrence and other colleagues, sponsored the first HIKE HOPE HEAL event, supporting mental health awareness and benefitting the mental health fund. Last year, we helped to raise over $25,000.

If you have ever put on a community event, you know there is lot of moving parts.

The increasing anxiety of asking for support each year never escapes me, but gosh darn, this community surprises me more and more.

It takes a village and I am honored to say that this village has continued to support each year and grow ever excitingly.

Dear Editor: I feel and believe that Garfield County and its municipalities are moving into a mightier leadership position in the Colorado tourism, food and restaurant industries, especially among resort and rural communities, with the advent of “County takes over food inspections.”

The whole of Garfield County can and will command and attract more consumer dollars, nationwide headlines and more Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank recognition than an uncaring Aspen and Pitkin County when it comes to environmental health vis-à-vis instituting a restaurant/market grade system. It can enact public posting requirements for all retail sellers of foods and beverages within its unincorporated county areas and adopting municipalities like happened in Los Angeles County in the latter 1990’s.

For public notice and awareness, a letter grade or numeric score card would be issued and placed at the front entrance of these food eateries/venues, including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, supermarkets, bars, bakeries and any store or place selling eats and beverages.

The official inspection report would be on hand at each venue for the public to inspect upon request.

Dear Editor: I have been involved with English in Action for over a year, and wanted to shed a bit of light on my experience. English in Action is a nonprofit that helps integrate immigrant residents into our community through tutoring and mentoring.

I have had two students, and have kept a fairly regular schedule with them. We meet once a week for an hour, usually at a local coffee shop, and work together to advance their English language skills. It is one of the best hours of my week. During that meeting, we review vocabulary and draw pictures, make weird gagging noises in our attempts to pronounce strange English words, and laugh about the new Spanglish language we have created to communicate. I took Spanish classes in school and while it comes in handy during some of our lessons, it’s not a necessary skill for all of our tutors.

Anyone can volunteer as a tutor. You are also given resources to assist with your lessons.

The feeling of warmth and accomplishment EIA tutors receive when they see this success well overcompensates for the hour we give each week.

Local schools enter new era of security vestibules At CRES and RFHS

By Debbie Bruell Sopris Sun Correspondent When students enter Roaring Fork High School and Crystal River Elementary School for the first day of school next week, they’ll find an additional set of doors to walk through. The new doors are part of the recently constructed security vestibules at these schools.

The construction of the vestibules was funded by the passage of last November’s bond issue for the Roaring Fork School District. When all the bond-funded projects are complete—which the district estimates will be sometime during the 2017-18 school year — all RFSD schools will have a security vestibule at their front entrance.

The vestibules at CRES and RFHS basically consist of a small area — defined by newly constructed walls and the new set of doors — just inside the front doors of each school. Within the vestibule is a “welcome window” connecting it to the front office. Visitors will be required to check in with a staff member at the front office before they can be “buzzed in” through the second set of doors.

The first set of doors will remain open during the school day, allowing visitors to enter the building freely — but only as far as the security vestibule. The second set of doors will be unlocked just before and after school, allowing students to enter and exit the building freely. Shortly after the school day begins,

As evidenced by the fact that the walls of the vestibules are only about eight feet high and do not go all the way to the ceiling, the goal of this security measure is not to make the schools impenetrable. Nor will there be any kind of metal detectors at the entrances.

As Jeff Gatlin, the district’s chief operating officer, told The Sopris Sun, the goal is to ensure that school staff are aware of who is in

the building at all times and ensure that no one has “quick access to the school.” If someone unwanted were to try to enter the school, Gatlin explained, “they’ll be noticed and there will be time to react.”

The vestibules were designed by TAB, Associates, based in Edwards, Colorado. According to Gatlin, the plan for the design was dictated in part by the existing architecture of the school, in particular the high ceilings at

the entrances of both schools. The vestibules in other schools may look somewhat different. Gatlin also explained that the vestibules were designed to maintain a welcoming feel at the schools.

As CRES Principal Matt Koenigsknecht told The Sopris Sun, “We’re still the same welcoming school as always. We always want community members in our building… This (security vestibule) is just a way to ensure the safety of our kids, which is of utmost importance to us.” He noted that the new process for allowing visitors into the building will also ensure that all visitors are greeted and welcomed to the school as soon as they arrive.

Some details of the security process are still being worked out, such as the possibility of keeping the doors of the vestibule unlocked during the lunch hour at RFHS and during after-school or evening events, and the timing for when the doors of the side entrance at RFHS (near the large gyms) will remain unlocked.

Other safety measures that have been added include magnetic sensors on all exterior doors (to ensure that doors are not being propped open and are fully closed and locked), card readers for staff, and an emergency call button that will lock all exterior doors and trigger alarms throughout the building.

Now that the security vestibules are complete, the next large bond-funded project for Carbondale schools is to remodel Carbondale Middle School to create more flexible and multifunctional learning spaces.

Crystal River Elementary embarks on its new Innovation Plan

By Debbie Bruell Sopris Sun Correspondent With the start of this school year, a new “Innovation Plan” will be set in motion at Crystal River Elementary School. A 34-page document outlining this plan was unanimously approved by the RE-1 School Board in June.

According to CRES principal Matt Koenigsknecht (or Mr. K as he is known at the school), nothing in the plan will be a big surprise for CRES teachers. It primarily outlines the key ideas that emerged from staff discussions during the 2015-16 school year about the mission, vision and identity of the school.

These discussions, according to Mr. K, revealed that the whole staff was passionate about moving the school toward more “authentic learning” — connecting students’ learning to the world outside the classroom — and developing more integration of students’ learning across the different subject areas. These ideas, Mr. K explained, led to the staff’s decision to implement project-based learning (PBL) at the school — a key element of the Innovation Plan.

One part of the Innovation Plan, which did not emerge until the very end of the school year, is a focus on creativity, paralleling the Carbondale Creative District (CCD) work spearheaded by Carbondale Arts (previously CCAH). Although no formal partnership has yet been established with the Carbondale Creative District, RE-1 administrators have met with Amy Kimberly, director of Carbondale Arts, about collaborating on a “creative district” of Carbondale’s RE-1 schools.

Town Briefs Arborist removes low hangers Sopris Sun Staff Report Town arborist, David Coon has continued removing low-hanging limbs on trees along the Hendrick trail and open space, and has met with the HOA president for the East Bank Point neighborhood about removal of some elm trees that are growing along the right of way, according to Town Manager Jay Harrington in his weekly report to trustees and staff. In other news from the report: Harrington reported that work is well underway on the town government’s draft 2017 municipal budget, and that departmental budget proposals were to be submitted to the Finance Department at the end of last week.

The Aug. 18 meeting of the planning and zoning commission, scheduled for 7 p.m. at Town Hall, will include agenda items concerning a proposed rezoning for the Stein property adjacent to Highway 133 between the intersection with Colorado Avenue and Main Street; a continued public hearing on a proposal to permit the conversion of commercial units to residential uses in the Commercial/Office zone district of the Crystal Village PUD; a condominium exemption to permit commercial units to be converted to residential uses in the Kay PUD, in what is known to some as Carbondale’s Northwest Territory along Dolores Way; and a major site-plan review for Parcel 2 of the Thompson Park development, which would create 16 residential lots in the project.

Over the previous week, Harrington reported, the town’s street crew kept up its efforts to remove debris from the lower yard of the wastewater treatment plant, and excavated and repaired two areas where a neighboring homeowner hit the town’s electric line while installing a new fence. The crew also made repairs to pedestrian trails and bike paths around town, and are investigating a section of walking trail in River Valley Ranch that has been damaged by tree roots, Harrington wrote. A 60-foot section of trail may need to be removed to get to the offending roots, he indicated.

New playground benches have arrived and were to be installed in Sopris Park and Miners Park this week. Park department workers last week had to dismantle irrigation pump at Thompson Park to remove grass and debris, and are investigating installation of a better filter system for the pump intake.

Park employees also performed some drainage work on the Highway 133 trail, and are looking at installing several small dry wells in spots along the trail to improve drainage, Harrington wrote.

FRIDAY, Aug. 5: At 10:40 p.m. police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation and, upon investigating, arrested the 47year-old male driver on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and ignoring a traffic control device.

SATURDAY, Aug. 6: At 3:02 a.m. police stopped a vehicle at Merrill Avenue and Morrison Street for weaving. After investigating, they arrested the 47-year-old male driver on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and other charges, and took him to the Garfield County Jail.

SATURDAY, Aug. 6: In three separate incidents — on Lincoln Avenue, Cleveland Place and Merrill Avenue — police took reports of trespassing, vehicle break-ins and criminal mischief. All three cases are under investigation.

MONDAY, Aug. 8: At 2:19 p.m. police

arrested a 27-year-old local man on charges of drunk driving, child abuse, driving while license revoked, illegal tinting of vehicle windows, and having an improperly attached vehicle registration sticker. The man was taken to the Garfield County Jail.

MONDAY, Aug. 8: At 7:19 p.m. police responded to a report of an accident at 4th Street and Colorado Avenue, “vehicle versus stop sign,” according to the report.

No ticket or arrest was indicated.

TUESDAY, Aug. 9: At 6:58 p.m. police responded to a call regarding a domestic-violence incident in progress. Upon arriving and investigating, they arrested a 30-year-old male on charges of domestic violence, abuse of telephone service, criminal mischief and harassment.

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 10: At 6:52 p.m. police were contacted by a homeowner living on South 3rd Street about a report from a neighbor that someone had been staying in the reporting party’s home while the party had been away. The party reported suspicion that the trespasser was a former boyfriend, and police looked through the house but did not report finding anyone there.

The kiva and spa completes the TNHA’s development and architectural space, according to a handout at the ground breaking. Upon completion, the kiva and spa will host workshops, yoga teacher trainings, ceremonies, artistic and musical offerings, and create spaces for personal growth and transformation. “Our desire is to bring in nationally touring teachers, musicians and artists,” said Shantay. The kiva and spa will also include tea service, a Japanese soaking tub, infrared sauna, and separate entrance and waiting rooms.

Mountain Fair reports solid numbers; T-shirts up

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Attendance at the 45th annual Carbondale Mountain Fair, July 29-31, might have been up a bit from that of previous years, and the event contributed perhaps up to $100,000 in combined revenues to the fair’s sponsoring organization, Carbondale Arts, and to the Town of Carbondale, according to Carbondale Arts Director Amy Kimberly.

Kimberly said that the Mountain Fair typically draws between 15,000 and 20,000 revelers over the course of the three-day event, and this year saw more of the same.

“It seemed slightly down, to me, on Saturday,” she said, possibly due to that day’s high temperatures, and estimated that over the course of Friday, Saturday and Sunday the Fair drew “maybe 18,000 people.”

In terms of revenues, Kimberly reported that the event’s gross income (before any bills were paid or sales-tax liability to the town were figured out) came to $238,360 — including booth rentals from vendors, income from the Cantina bar tent, and revenues from sales at the Mountain Fair’s own vendor activities, such as the Valley Artists booth.

Kimberly said the gross income this year was almost exactly the same as it was in 2015, when the final tally was $238,269.

“By all intents and purposes, it’s up maybe a couple hundred dollars and a thousand people” over last year’s numbers, she said.

Some vendors, of course, do better than others from year to year, and Kimberly pointed out one in particular who does well almost every year — Mark Ludy, from Ft. Collins, Colorado; illustrator, artist and entertaining figure for children of all ages.

Ludy, she said, raked in about $23,000 on his own, which Kimberly said is a fairly typical performance for him at the Mountain Fair.

“He probably was one of our best selling vendors” at this year’s event, Kimberly said.

Out of that gross-income figure, the Fair must pay town sales taxes, which Kimberly estimated will be around $20,000 to $22,000, or roughly the same as was paid last year.

The net proceeds filling the Carbondale Arts coffers, Kimberly said, are expected to be “maybe between $70,000 and $80,000,” although a final tally is not yet available.

One other revenue figure she did not have on hand was how much collateral business was done over the Fair weekend by the “bricks-and-sticks” businesses in town, which characteristically see an upward bump in business from the thousands of people wandering around Carbondale during the Fair. Because sales-tax figures are considered proprietary information for each business, and exact financial figures usually are not released, that information generally is rather hazy.

But, Kimberly said, the town has a new sales-tax tracking system that, in the future, might make it easier to determine how much local businesses benefit, financially, from the Fair.

T-shirt sales, a significant annual fundraiser for the Fair organization and Carbondale Arts, were “up by a couple thousand” in revenues this year, Kimberly continued.

New item A new item this year was the sale of reusable metal cups, purchased with the help of a grant from the town as a way to cut down on the Fair’s trash generation. The cups, made by Kleen Kanteen of Chico, Calif., were sold primarily to hold the various hard-liquor drinks served up at the Cantina bar tent.

The Fair organization ordered 2,500 of the 16-ounce stainless steel cups (along with 2,500 of the red, recyclable plastic cups of the same size, available to those reluctant to pay the $8 cost of the Kleen Kanteen), and only had about 600 of the steel cups left after the Fair ended.

Photo by Jane Bachrach liquor this year than beer,” she mused, although that would be difficult to determine given the fact that beer was being dispensed mostly in the old-style “corn cups” made of compostable material.

Kimberly said the Kleen Kanteen cups were deemed a success, but noted that it is not certain whether they will be back again next year or whether some other reusable or recyclable cup will turn up instead. Those decisions, she said, will be made starting in October, when the Fair Board meets to talk about next year’s Fair, although she predicted that, at the least, “I think we’ll have some of the Kleen Kanteen cups available, because they’re a wonderful souvenir.”

Green Team Kimberly said the Green Team was very active in keeping the Fair’s recycling effort at

a fever pitch, particularly after a lapse in last year’s recycling effort that sent at least one truckload of recyclable material to the county landfill instead of a recycling center.

“Ninety percent of (this year’s) Mountain Fair waste was composted or recycled,” she said proudly,“which is the most ever. After last year’s problem, that was watched closely this year.”

Another advance for this year’s Fair, Kimberly said, was a determination to “keep it as locally based as possible” by signing up the Carbondale-based Roaring Fork Beer Company (RFBC) and the Marble Distilling Co. to supply much of the alcoholic product for the Cantina’s operations (a total of 70 kegs of beer were consumed at the Cantina, according to the RFBC).

And those alcoholic beverages that were not made here in Carbondale, she said, were made in Colorado — rum from Crested Butte, hard cider from Paonia and a mojito mix produced in Snowmass.

Kimberly said the Cantina generated about $92,000 in revenue, about $3,000 less than the tally from last year.

“Every number is pretty close to last year,” she concluded. “I don’t think the goal is to keep growing the Fair. I think it (20,000 or fewer) is a nice number. I mean, we don’t want it to be any less, (but) there is a maximum number of people who can go through the park” in the course of a weekend.

As for the general comportment of the crowds at the Fair, Kimberly said the police reported it went fairly smoothly, though she did notice more ambulances picking up people at Sopris Park than usual, though she had no details about the causes behind those incidents.

All told, she said, “It was definitely a most awesome Fair.”

There will be a volunteers’ party at the Launchpad from 5 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 19, to thank the 300 or more volunteers who helped at the Fair, Kimberly said.

Hobbs makes last minute push for town-wide bag ban

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Carbondale Trustee A.J. Hobbs is soon to step down from his post; his final act as an elected official will be attendance at the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees (BOT) on Aug. 23, and will include participation in interviews of citizens hoping to take his place on the town board (he will not be permitted to vote on a choice for his replacement).

But at a BOT work session on Tuesday he tried to get a final policy debate onto the agenda of the Aug. 23 meeting, concerning something he has advocated for some time — a town-wide ban on the use of plastic disposable shopping bags instead of the current ban that affects only the City Market grocery store, and a ban on the sale of small, plastic water bottles.

The town’s bag-ban was approved by the BOT in 2011 and narrowly endorsed by a public vote in 2012, as a way to cut down on the negative environmental consequences caused by the use of such bags, as well as on the veritable avalanche of plastic bags that regularly clog up local landfill operations. It contains a provision that limits the ban to stores larger than 3,500 square feet in size, which effectively meant the ban applies only

to City Market.

Almost immediately after the ban went into effect in 2012, however, some environmental activists in town began advocating for a total ban on the issuance of bags by stores in town, regardless of the size of the business, as well as on the sale of plastic bottles filled with water.

Hobbs has been an advocate for the total ban of bags and bottles essentially since he was elected in 2014.

But at Tuesday’s meeting, his request to put it on the agenda for Aug. 23 was not followed.

Others on the board felt it was a valid topic for a public discussion, but not necessarily for next week’s meeting.

Trustee Ben Bohmfalk, while not opposed to the idea of the discussion, said that if Hobbs was insisting that it be voted on before he leaves office, “I think that’s a rush job, and the public needs to weigh in.”

Others pointed out that, since the deadline for submitting material for the Aug. 23 agenda is July 18 at noon, there would be little time for the town’s staff to compile a packet of material about the concept.

The discussion of Hobbs’ request was complicated by a request from Trustee Katrina Byars to place another possibly contentious item on the Aug. 23 agenda, the idea of installing lights

on what currently are dark stretches of streets and trails around Carbondale.

Byars has brought up this idea in previous meetings, citing recent attempted assaults against women in dark places around town.

When her suggestion met with little support from the other trustees, partly because it was a last-minute request, Byars noted that she has been hearing from constituents who want the town government to make the streets safer for women to walk at night.

“I know other members of the board feel safe,” she said, looking pointedly around at her male counterparts on the board, “but I don’t, as a woman, and other members of the community don’t either.”

Dan resists Acting Mayor Dan Richardson, however, resisted both requests, for several reasons.

“I think it’s asking a lot for staff to be prepared for any kind of discussion that night,” said Richardson.

He and others at the meeting also noted that there are numerous items already on the agenda for Aug. 23, and to add this along with Hobbs’ proposed item might make the meeting untenably long.

There was some talk about permitting cit-

izens to come to the Aug. 23 meeting to voice their concerns, though the board would put off formal discussion and possible action to a later meeting, though that, too, was viewed skeptically due to concerns about overloading the agenda.

After the discussion had gone on for some time, Trustee Frosty Merriott spoke up and said that in his six years on the board he had never witnessed anything like it, adding that setting the agenda for board meetings had historically been viewed as the province of the mayor and the town manager, period.

Richardson, after reflecting for a moment, said Merriott was correct, apologized for “wasting time” at the meeting, and moved to adjourn the meeting without adding either item to next week’s agenda.

In other action, the board agreed to begin interviews of applicants for Hobbs’ trustee position at the Aug. 23 meeting.

Town Clerk Cathy Derby told the board that, as of Tuesday, only one application had been received at Town Hall, and that the deadline for applications is Monday, Aug. 22.

The board agreed that, if more time is needed to accommodate the applicants, the interviews will be continued to the Sept. 13 meeting.

Pickleballers urge town to let them paint lines P&R proceeding cautiously

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Area devotees of Pickleball, a wildly popular sport that is played on a smaller, shared court than tennis, showed up en masse at the Aug. 10 meeting of the Carbondale Parks and Recreation Commission, ready for a showdown.

Many of the 40 or so players were dressed in the “uniform” of the sport — a team Tshirt, shorts and athletic shoes — and some had come directly from pickeball games in order to ask that the commission pay a little more attention to their concerns, which essentially are that there be more pickleball courts set up in the Carbondale area.

But they were told at the meeting that there is work to be done before any lines can be painted on the local tennis courts to accommodate pickleball, in part because the U.S. Tennis Association’s Colorado chapter has ruled that USTA tennis tournaments cannot be sanctioned on courts that have pickleball lines as well as the lines for tennis, at least not if those pickleball lines were painted after 2013, the year when the USTA-Colorado ruling was handed down.

According to statements by Clyde Alberts and others in the group, one way to increase the number of pickleball courts is to paint extra pickleball lines on the three tennis courts at North Face Park that would increase pickleball’s courts to six.

That cannot be done unilaterally, however, and parks and recreation commission member Heather Henry said gravely that the commission is trying to avoid having the players spend the money to paint the lines, if they will just have to be removed to comply with the rules and the agreements in place about using the courts.

And it’s not as though there isn’t any pressure being brought to bear — the players are hoping to get new lines painted on the three town-owned courts in time for a Sept. 10-11 pickleball tournament.

Lacking a decision by that date, said pickleball spokesperson Clyde Alberts of Carbondale, the players will resort to the same methods they have for the previous three years — placing blue “painter’s tape” on the surface of the courts for the duration of the tournament, then removing it once the tourney is finished.

A little history Pickleball, for those who don’t play or are not aware of the game, is slightly over 50 years old, having been “invented” in 1965 at a home on Bainbridge Island, Washington, when the husband of the houseshold returned home with three golfing buddies to find their gathered families bored and looking for something to do.

After failing to get a badminton game going because the shuttlecock could not be found, they shortened the net a bit, fashioned some wooden paddles out of scrap plywood and started batting around a Wiffleball — thus giving birth to what is now acknowledged as perhaps the fastest growing sport in the world.

There is a USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) with headquarters in Arizona, a website featuring new gear and accessories, a Facebook page and a YouTube channel, for anyone wanting more information about the sport.

Here in the Roaring Fork Valley, Alberts said, the game arrived about six or seven years ago, and the Roaring Fork Pickleball Association was formed three years ago.

With about 75 “active” (meaning duespaying regulars) members and “quite a few others who come in and out,” the group boasts members from far-flung states as well as from Rifle to Aspen, Alberts said.

A confrontation According to Alberts, he and his group had expected to have a formal spot on the agenda at the Aug. 10 meeting, and were somewhat exasperated to learn otherwise.

The school district’s input was needed, recreation officials said, because an Intergovernmental Agreement between the town and the school district gives Roaring Fork High School girls’ tennis teams priority in using the tennis courts at North Face, and the USTA-Colorado rule was seen as prohibiting any “blended” lines for both sports on the same courts.

“They do have the rights to that court,” said commission chair Becky Moller. “We need them to say it’s OK” before any new lines can be painted.

But, added commission member Henry, “I think it remains, for us … it’s our responsibility” to find out how the school district would feel about the idea of painting pickleball court lines onto the tennis courts.

Discussions continue on Nuche Park offer

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Town officials hope to reconcile the conflicting interests of citizens regarding a proposal to build a picnic shelter at Nuche Park, with an eye toward honoring the heritage of the town’s ranching pioneers as well as the Ute Indians who called this place home before white settlers arrived.

If reconciliation proves impossible, however, it was clear at an Aug. 10 meeting of the Carbondale Parks & Recreation Commission that it might be necessary to come up with separate sites for honoring the legacies of local cowboys and Native American Indians.

“Maybe there’s a way of bringing it all together,” said commission chair Becky Moller “We’ve got to play nice together.”

Real estate agent Sherry Rubin, who pre-

sented the ranching-legacy idea on behalf of ranchers Roz and Tom Turnbull, agreed.

“I know the Turnbulls would want to work with everyone,” Rubin said.

The Turnbulls recently broached the idea, acting through Rubin, with a proposal that the Turnbulls would pay for some improvements — such as a picnic shelter, parking spaces and perhaps some sort of rest-room facilities — at the property named Nuche (pronounced “nootsch”) Park on the south end of town.

The Turnbull family is hoping to turn the park, where they once kept their bulls, into a type of historical commemoration of the area’s ranching history.

The park is called by name the Utes themselves use for their tribe.

Commissioner Tracy Wilson, who called the Turnbulls’ offer “incredibly gen-

erous,” added, “I don’t want to do something that’s culturally insensitive” and offered that Nuche Park might not be the most appropriate spot for honoring the area’s ranching heritage.

Moller commented that perhaps representatives of the Ute tribe itself should be consulted.

Ross Douglass told the commissioners noted that the park is used for Ute-style spiritual ceremonies, and wondered if the interest in adding ranching to the park’s cultural ties might not be an extension of the attitudes from the 1800s, when efforts were made by white settlers and the U.S. government to wipe out the Utes to make way for American settlements.

Rubin said she would inform the Turnbulls about the discussion at Wednesday’s meeting, and return for a future meeting.

All that aside, said commission member Tracy Wilson, “We’ve felt the support for pickleball from the beginning, the drive you’ve brought to it” in seeking town cooperation to create new court space.

Alberts said he had talked with school officials, who told him that there will be no RFHS girls tennis team this year. Instead, he said, Carbondale players will join the Basalt team, and play on courts either at Basalt High School or at the Crown Mountain Park in El Jebel.

But Recreation Manager Eric Brendlinger said he is still researching the different USTA rules regarding “blended” tennis/pickleball lines, as well as getting in touch with officials at the school district, and was not very hopeful that the needed information will be gathered in time to get the lines painted for the upcoming tournament.

Brendlinger said the matter will be on the next Parks & Recreation Commission meeting.

Education has already done with CRES over the past couple of years, EL Education is open to the possibility of creating a unique relationship with CRES, providing training and support focused solely on PBL instruction, instead of its typical partnership with schools that entails a “whole school transformation” approach — including all aspects of a school’s culture, instructional programming and leadership.

Mr. K explained that, as organizations, BIE and EL Education work in concert with each other, sharing resources and expertise. CRES chose EL Education over BIE for the ongoing support of PBL because EL Education is more familiar with CRES, it has Colorado-based offices, and its services are more affordable than BIE. CRES will begin a small-scale, phasing in of PBL this year, with the goal of full implementation in the next few years.

Ryan Becvarik, 29, died of accidental drowning in the Sopris Park irrigation ditch on Aug. 14, according to a press release from the GarďŹ eld County coroner. He was discovered face down in the ditch at about 6:10 p.m., the press release said, and pronounced dead at Valley View Hospital at 7:15 p.m. A Carbondale Fire District ambulance arrived at the scene within three minutes of receiving the 911 call, said district chief Ron Leach. Carbondale Police Chief declined to release any additional information on the drowning, referred Sopris Sun questions to the coronerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s press release, and said a police department investigation is ongoing. You could tell this was not the first argument in their long marriage. In fact, it wasn’t even their first one since breakfast.

The Horvaths were famous for yelling at each other in public, and those of us on the barstools who’d been morosely slumped over our drinks, perked up in the hopes of seeing some Hungarian-style domestic violence.

Witnesses to what came to be known as “The Wurlitzer Incident” included any number of people. I know for sure that Mac ‘n Eddie ‘ Catbird were there. (Mac ‘n Eddie ‘ Catbird were pilgrims who lived in a converted school bus called the “Zymogenic Mission,” which had been illegally parked on Colorado Avenue for several months).

Next to the Zymogenic missionaries were Old Joe & Virgil. Joe and Virgil were Carbondale native sons who had spent most of their lives competing for the title of Village Idiot. They pretty much lived at the Nugget.

Virgil wore mega-thick glasses and sometimes would cry out: “I dropped my glasses

And he might’ve beaten them both to death, too, because in case I forgot to mention if, Lynn Kaat was a guy who today might be described as a person with “anger issues” but back then the term was “crazier than an outhouse rat.”

But he didn’t scare the Horvaths one bit little bit.

Gyula and Rosa were refugees from the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and it was rumored they had flung Molotov cocktails at the big T-34 Russian tanks as the armored behemoths road into Budapest to crush the freedom fighters of that Iron Curtain tragedy. But they escaped the carnage and managed to make their way to a place halfway ’round the world to start over in a place called “Carbondale.”

And they worked hard, real hard, to stay.

Rosa, who was called Rosalia in the Old Country, raised three children and cultivated the finest vegetable and flower garden in the Roaring Fork Valley. Gyula took a job at Dutch Creek #1 Mine at Mid-Continent Coal and Coke’s operations above Redstone, and became something of a legend when he was on the seven-man crew headed by Leroy “Pete” Borich, which set the world’s record for the most coal mined in a single day by a single crew.

“We were excellent souls that day,” Gyula would recall many years later. “We were Champions of the World.”

Here comes Kaat Now, here was this crazed bartender who was going to bludgeon Horvaths because he thought they might trash his Wurlitzer.

The Horvaths, however, were not without allies in the Black Nugget that evening. The crowd knew them, like them, respected them.

Almost as one, the miners and the cowboys and the hippies and the CRMS teachers and a few real estate agents and a couple of derelicts jumped up, encircled the Horvaths and dared Lynn to make a move.

He didn’t.

So … having lost the support of his customer base, Mr. Kaat left town and sold the bar to a guy named Larry Pickel, who put up a signed on the door that said “Closed For Remodeling” and re-opened a week later with the only noticeable difference being that the brown walls in the bathrooms had been re-painted a perky shade of purple.

Thus was the “New Carbondale” truly born.

Some might argue the theoretical Big Bang that catapulted the town into the ecotone was the Carbondale Mountain Fair.

We in Geezerville think otherwise.

We think it was the Wurlitzer that done it.

Quien sabe: We could argue paradigms all day long.

But one thing is for sure, as Faulkner said: “The past is

never dead. It’s not even past.”

In the next Geezerville Tidings, look for “The night Ted Bundy came to town.”
