Trials a howling success Dear Editor: On Aug. 9–11, our dog agility club held a sanctioned and judged dog agility competition on the fields between Bridges High School and the Third Street Center in Carbondale, and it was a huge success.

As far as we know, this was the first time that anyone had held such a competition anywhere between Denver and Grand Junction; we had many dozens of spectators come out on Friday evening and during the day on Saturday and Sunday to watch dogs of all sizes and breeds (and lots of non-breeds too) show what they could do on a dozen different obstacle courses.

The event was very popular with competitors from as far away as eastern Colorado, Salt Lake City and all over the Western Slope, and the spectators got to watch dogs and handlers that ranged from those competing for the first time to teams that have won national agility titles.

One of the events on Sunday was a qualifier for the 2014 DOCNA agility national championships and several dog/handler teams earned a trip to the nationals at this event. Those of us competing just loved having so many spectators, and especially all the families and kids, come out to watch during the weekend, and we hope to make this an annual event if you’ll have us back.

A lot of people cleared the way for this event to take place in Carbondale, and we’d like to thank them for their confidence that this event was worth supporting and that it would add a little something to the Carbondale summer for the community and visitors.

Jeff Jackel of the Carbondale Recreation Department was a big supporter of the event from the first time I asked him what he thought about the idea in 2012; and the event would not have happened without his encouragement and cooperation. He also spent considerable effort to coordinate our event schedule with other recreational users of the fields, and so the event went off without even a single problem or conflict during the whole three days. Thanks Jeff, couldn’t have asked for more.

And to all the soccer, rugby, lacrosse and other groups, thanks for letting us borrow your fields for a few days. Steve Groom of the recreation department made sure that we had all the facilities we needed, and the Roaring Fork School District stepped up to provide a lot of critical support for the use of their fields as our competition venue and help us with the logistics of bringing almost 50 competition dogs into the middle of town for 400 runs during the three days. Larry Estrada and Mike Demond of the RFSD got the fields into great condition for the event (we heard many compliments from the com-

petitors!) and made sure we had the water and electrical that we needed. The wonderful principal of Bridges High School, Lyn Bair, not only graciously invited our club to use some school facilities, but spent her own personal time during the weekend to make sure it all happened. We got nothing but support and encouragement, even though this event had never been tried in town before and we were going to overrun the place with off-leash dogs!

It was a great weekend spent running our dogs at the base of beautiful Mt. Sopris, and it was probably the loveliest setting for our event that anyone could envision. The warm reception from the community wasn’t unexpected by me, frankly, but I know it was really appreciated by all those who came to Carbondale for the first time. I think they all fell in love with Carbondale.

Dig those flowers Dear Editor: Greetings all you “green-thumb folks” that planted flowers around our fair town in the spring! We think this might just be the best creative show that we have seen in town.

Now is the time to visit your creations and deadhead and primp them up for our esteemed panel of judges who will soon be visiting each pot that you’ve planted. The judging period will take place August 19-23.

What a marvelous creative show you have given Carbondale this summer. They are all

beautifully presented. The judges will really be challenged to determine the winners.

Tired of it Dear Editor: I don’t know about anybody else, but I am sure getting tired of hearing about all the past tragedies of yesterday and having to relive them over and over again. Tragedies are bad enough without everybody in the nation having to relive them over and over again.

Frankly, if my son or daughter had been killed in New Jersey schools or the Aurora theatre, I would have wanted my grieving to be private. I can’t see where depriving people of weapons is going to bring back these children. I don’t think that by making laws so that everybody has to follow them is going to make missing them any easier. I am sorry for their losses. I think that by taking sick people off the streets and or making schools have a better understanding of what can happen is a better alternative.

Carbondale steps up during Red Canyon fire

Ortiz started her Tuesday at about 10 a.m. and wrapped it up at 11 p.m. “They (the incident command team) asked me to stay for Wednesday but I don’t have the equipment or staff.”

Leach said that when the fire was first reported on Monday, Glenwood Springs Fire Chief Gary Pillotson became incident commander, with Carbondale assisting through a mutual aid agreement. One reason the Carbondale fire station was named incident command post on Tuesday rather than keeping it in Glenwood Springs was to take some responsibilities off the Glenwood Springs fire department’s plate. Then there’s the Carbondale fire station itself. Leach

said Pillotson requested it.

The station was built at the south end of town on Highway 133 in 2006. The “big room,” where more than a dozen tables were set up and Tuesday’s initial briefing took place, not only comfortably holds more than 85 people, Leach said its technology is “outstanding,” with two wireless signals, computer stations, a projector system with screens, and a commercial-grade kitchen across the hall.

“We built it (the fire station), with an eye toward emergency management incidents,” Leach said.“We’ve used it (the big room) many times … for wildfires, mud slides, river rescues … that’s what it (the station) was built for.”

Monday started out with business as usual at the Carbondale fire station, then escalated to a “here they come” mode on Tuesday before settling back to a semi-regular routine on Wednesday.

“We’re pretty much back to business as usual today,”Carbondale Fire Chief Ron Leach told The Sopris Sun on Wednesday afternoon. “We’ve had a rescue call on McClure Pass … a couple of 911 emergency calls.”

As Leach spoke, federal fire-fighting personnel continued settling into the Carbondale Middle School campus. The parking lot had been empty on Tuesday afternoon but filled with trailers, vehicles, fire-fighting equipment, and a mobile kitchen with mess tent as dawn broke on Wednesday.

All this action was brought on by the Red Canyon wildfire that broke out three miles southeast of Glenwood Springs on Monday afternoon and later spread northeast to more than 300 acres, forcing an evacuation of about 20 homes.

Carbondale, Glenwood Springs and Basalt volunteer fire departments were the first responders and quickly saw the rough terrain consisted of tinder-dry mixed pinion-juniper with islands of sage at lower elevations.

“It’s a very dangerous fire,” Leach said.“The Carbondale, Glenwood and Basalt fire fighters did an excellent job the first two days … That area is totally over grown.”

Leach said the incident command post (ICP) started in the Glenwood Springs fire chief’s truck on Monday, shifted to the Carbondale fire station on Tuesday afternoon, then to the middle school on Wednesday, making Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team “A” member Shane Del Grosso the incident commander.

Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario requested federal fire fighters on Monday night, Leach said.

By Tuesday afternoon, Incident Management Team “A” members, dressed in red shirts, were starting to walk through the Carbondale fire station’s front doors.At about 6 p.m., a total of about 85 team members and others sat down at rows of tables for the initial briefing.The team members included specialists in communications, planning, finances and public information.

After the hour-long briefing on Tuesday night came dinner for up to 150 management team members, plus local volunteers and others. That’s when Cathy Ortiz (Big Mama’s catering) stepped in.Although she had prepared lunch for about 20 locals earlier in the day, her focus had to shift for dinner. That’s because the fire was now under the auspices of the federal government, which has specific standards for a fire-fighting menu.

“It (dinner) has to contain a certain number of calories …

It has to be ‘whole muscle’ meat, not hamburger … there’s (a minimum) four ounces of vegetables, four ounces of potato, four ounces of dessert. Jeff Wadley gave me the regulations years ago and I kept them.”

Before Ortiz grilled up a bunch of steaks for hungry fire fighters, she had to corral the meat. Ortiz said that “luckily” she knows Felix Tornare at Milgro Ranch on Missouri Heights, who specializes in grass-fed beef.“He had 210 New York strip steaks … They had to be at least 10 ounces …

“Life’s Operating Manual� author visits Carbondale Aug. 24 — A “Tomversation� at Steve’s Guitars

By Barbara Dills Sopris Sun correspondent If you are a fan of comedy or a spiritual seeker, there’s a good chance you have heard of Tom Shadyak or seen one of his movies.

The youngest staff writer for comedian Bob Hope when he was just 24, Shadyak went on to a successful Hollywood career as a director, writer and producer, best known for the ďŹ lms “Ace Venture: Pet Detective,â€?“Liar, Liar,â€? “Bruce Almighty,â€? and “The Nutty Professor.â€? More recently, he wrote, directed and produced the documentary “I AM,â€? which asks some of today’s most respected thinkers “What’s wrong with our world and what can we do about it?â€? The ďŹ lm, which was shown locally by Davi Nikent in early 2012 and won two awards at the 2010 Telluride Mountain Film festival, also addresses the question, “Why did one of Hollywood’s most successful directors give up a multimillion dollar career — as well as mansions and private planes — for a mobile home and a bicycle?â€?

A routine concussion from a 2007 mountain bike accident had something to do with it. Shadyak suffered for ďŹ ve months from post-concussion syndrome (PCS), a near deadly and extremely painful condition. In his new book, “Life’s Operating Manual,â€? he writes,“It’s a powerful thing to face your own death, how mortality can move one into action. And once I surrendered, a single

thought came to mind: you cannot die without ever having told your story; you cannot die without ever having expressed who you truly are.â€? When he recovered from PCS, he immediately began work on “I AM.â€? He now devotes the majority of his time and celebrity to spreading his message and supporting the philanthropic work of the nonproďŹ t he founded, The Foundation for I AM. “Life’s Operating Manualâ€? is a series of inspirational dialogues between the inner voices of Fear and Truth, a device Shadyak uses to explore and drive home the central, deceptively simple message of “I AMâ€?: that a collective commitment to love and compassion — one person at a time — truly can (and will) change the world.

On Saturday, August 24, at 6 p.m., Shadyak will lead an intimate “Tomversation� at Steve’s Guitars in Carbondale, in which he’ll share more about the inspiration behind his book and his motivation to encourage others to live a more examined life.

Moose still loose What is believed by some to be the Crystal Valley moose was spotted south of Carbondale near the Sewell ranch on Aug. 10. Bonedale pitches pooches A Delaney dog park lover reports the Carbondale Tourism Committee has picked up on something his crowd has claimed for years: the 35-acre park appeals to Aspen folks as well. The proof is in one of those upvalley newspapers, where the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce ran an ad this week headlined “Doggonit, I love this town,” featuring a smiling brown dog with his tongue sticking out about four inches. The copy reads:

Big time musicians in a small town: Banc and Phillips Amy Hadden Marsh Special to The Sopris Sun Sitting on her front porch on an August afternoon with fellow musician Josh Phillips, Ananda Banc jumps into Cole Porter’s “All of You,” a jazz standard made famous by Ella Fitzgerald.

“I love the looks of you, the lure of you….”

Banc appears to snatch the tune out of mid-air. Her singing is effortless, pitch-perfect, and her voice spans octaves, inviting listeners deeper into the song.

Jazz is a new frontier for Banc, who recently sat in with her father, Chris Bank, at the Third Street Center’s Culture Club.

Banc said the blues suits her voice well but jazz is not as easy.“It takes a good ear to do jazz,” she said.

If that’s true, then Banc is a natural jazz diva. Her life is drenched in music and dance, beginning with folk dancing at age 4 in Madison, Wisconsin, with her mother, Roxanne Bank. The family moved to the Roaring Fork Valley when Banc was five, where she studied ballet, jazz and modern dance.

As a teen, she learned Sufi meditation movement and African dance, often taught by her mother. “She has a talent for it,” wrote Roxanne in an e-mail. “It comes naturally for her.”

Ananda’s dad believes that dance has given his daughter a leg up, as it were, for singing jazz, which is steeped in movement and rhythm. “You have to have internal rhythm for jazz,” he added. “(Ananda) got

Banc has studied with singer/songwriter Lisa Dancing-Light and vocalist Jan Garrett but she has pretty much played “by ear” all her life. She taught herself how to play guitar and began belting out her own songs as a girl, inspired by Portishead, Radiohead, Tori Amos and Fiona Apple. “I like strong vocalists who do their own thing,” she said.

Unlike most of us, Banc didn’t restrict her performances to the shower. “I’ve always been a real hammy kind of person,” she explained. “Some of my earliest memories are of going out on our deck when I was about 10 and just singing, improvising,” added Banc, who is currently riding a wave of success in the Roaring Fork Valley with singing partner Phillips.

slinger since high school, has a lot of respect for Banc’s work. “I’m more of an instrumentalist who can sing,” he explained.“But, I really don’t have a beautiful, nice, unique character to my voice the way (she does).”

The two met in Carbondale 15 years ago at an acting class taught by Kether Axelrod. Banc was a student at Yampah High School in Glenwood Springs and Phillips was playing music. He’s played with the 12 Bar Flys, Fire in the Asylum, and other bands. Banc remembers him as sort of untouchable. “He was, like, this rock god,” she said, laughing.

At Axelrod’s urging, they both ended up in Los Angeles between 1999 and 2010, living at one point in a house in the Hollywood Hills with other Carbondale friends.

Banc split her time between Carbondale and L.A. and had some success in television, including a part in the series “Judging Amy.” Phillips was a full-time Angeleno with roles in television, commercials and independent films. He also became an accomplished voice actor.

But, Tinsel Town took its toll. “If you’re having a rough time (in L.A.),” said Phillips, “you’re having twice the rough time.” Banc says Carbondale is much more supportive than L.A. “I mean, this place kind of won as far as the energy I wanted to have around me,” she said, adding that she sacrificed her connections in L.A. for the laidback Carbondale life-style.

KDNK’s Blues & BBQ poised to smoke Sopris Sun Staff Report KDNK’s annual Blues & BBQ on the Fourth Street Plaza offers three tasty musical acts and BBQ from the Goat restaurant in Carbondale.

The show starts at 4 p.m. on Aug. 17 with local rock/blues from Hannibal Brown.

The Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute band Texas Flood starts at 5 p.m.; headliner Cary Morin plays from 7-9:30 p.m.

Morin, a Crow Indian from Montana, is making his Carbondale debut. His unique Native Americana finger-style blues sets the stage for his smoky, nuanced voice filled with timeless tones and infused wisdom.

Morin just released a new album, “Streamline,” which follows on the heels of the critically acclaimed, “Sing it Louder,” which received lots of airplay and attention from KDNK DJs. Texas Flood plays a two-hour show highlighting Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. The band rips through 25 songs spanning every album from“Texas Flood”to “The Vaughan Brothers.”The group features

Gerry Goodman on guitar and vocals, John Brown on bass and Darin Elwell on drums.

Goat co-owners owners Stacey Baldock and Pagge Wheatley will serve club sliders with smoked turkey, smoked pork belly, juicy tomatoes and jalapeno mayo. Also on the menu: Traditional pulled pork sliders and sandwiches; shaved smoked prime rib sandwiches with creamy horseradish; Mexican pulled pork tacos and cilantro slaw; sides of baked beans, potato salad, slaw, corn on the cob and Mexican corn on the cob. The barbecue sauce options are a Mojo Carolina and a sweet Kansas City.

The event kicks off KDNK’s 30th anniversary membership drive, according to a press release. Admission is free for all KDNK members with a KDNK community card and $5 for general admission. KDNK will serve selected beverages to compliment the barbecue and will broadcast the music from at 88.1, 88.3 and 88.5 FM and via the Internet at kdnk.org/listen.

Both agree that acting and performing music go handin-hand. “Acting has helped me with confidence and feeling comfortable in my own skin,” said Banc. That may be why she’s taking on new projects like directing Carbondale’s annual burlesque show and singing jazz.

But, despite their burgeoning success, both Banc and Phillips are getting antsy for something bigger. Banc said she’s torn between staying here and moving to New York City or back to LA. Phillips is a musician in search of a solid touring band.

“I get a big-fish-in-a-small-pond feeling here,” said Banc with a smile. “But, I’m thirsty for the ocean.”

Lift-Up needs holiday volunteers Due to a shortage of volunteers, Lift-Up in Carbondale is looking for folks to coordinate its Holiday Food Distribution this year.

Tasks are relatively simple and are spread over several weeks, according to a press release. There are two sessions: Thanksgiving and Christmas. Both distribution dates are scheduled about 10 days before the holiday.

The Roaring Fork Rams woke up early for practice Monday morning, hitting the ground running with two-a-day practices, a healthy mix of old faces and new talent, and everything to prove.

Football With the kids in their street clothes and bars of early morning light replacing the flood lights of game day, you can tell we’re still a couple of weeks out from the first game of the season, but the energy is already beginning to build.

As veteran head-coach Tory Jensen surveys the field, the conspicuous absence of towering tight-end Trae Moxley, who now lends his talent to Colorado State University, doesn’t seem to bother him.

“We’ve got a lot of good, talented kids.We’ve just gotta get them to believe in what they’re doing. This is the best talent we’ve had out here in a while. We’re missing some big guys, but if we can get the little guys to go we’ll be in good shape.”

Jensen turns to shout a few words of instruction to the boys practicing snaps a few yards away. His smile is bright and his confidence seems sincere. “I think I’m half-a-kid myself,” he observes.“These kids are coming up and it’s exciting to watch. It’s exciting to build something and see what happens with it. Football is the greatest game. There’s no other sport where it takes 22 or 30 people working to make it happen ... It’s all shapes and sizes. It’s all comers.”

Jensen’s enthusiasm seems to be infectious. Despite a lessthan-stellar 2012 season, the practice field is packed and 4550 players are expected to turn out in 2013.Tanner Nieslanik will return as quarterback, joined by seniors Nate Nieslanik and Mitch Brown, and juniors Jose Lopez, Rayundo Acuna and Adrian Chavez among others.

The Rams face tough opposition in the 1A division, with Hotchkiss, Cedaredge and Monte Vista likely turning out with top-notch teams. To kick off the season, Roaring Fork travels to Grand Valley for a preseason game on Aug. 24. The season begins in earnest with an away game against the Basalt Longhorns at 7 p.m. on Aug. 30. Their first home game is against Aspen at 7 p.m. on Sept. 6.

Volleyball Jennifer Dority may be new to the top job, but many of the girls she’s coaching this year were freshmen when she came to Roaring Fork as the C-team coach. That continuity should be key, as she inherits a spectacular record from RAM SPORTS page 16

Wyly art center recognizes Karen and Bayard Hollins “En Plein Aire” slated for Aug. 22 Sopris Sun Staff Report The Wyly Community Art Center recognizes Karen and Bayard Hollins with its Art Excellence Award during the “En Plein Aire” benefit at the Roaring Fork Club from 5 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 22.

The Wyly Art Excellence Award recognizes outstanding achievement for elevating the visual arts in the community. Since their move to Basalt in 2003, Karen and Bayard have been involved with several arts organizations, including Aspen Film, Anderson Ranch Art Center, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, Aspen Writers’ Foundation, the Wyly Community Art Center and the Third Street Center in Carbondale, according to a press release.

Karen and Bayard are two of the original Wyly Stewards who made the relocation of the art center to Basalt possible. “We feel honored to be chosen to receive this

award, especially because it comes from the Wyly. We are incredibly lucky to live in a community full of people who give back in so many ways. It’s one thing to write a check, but what inspires us the most are the people who give of their time and hard work to make things happen.

The fact that the Wyly exists is a clear testament to that,” said Karen.

Karen Hollins served on the board of the Wyly for five years and through her foundation continued to be one of its major donors. “Her dedication and fundraising efforts made a major impact in securing the current centrally located home for the Wyly in the former Basalt library building,” said a Wyly spokesman.

“It is important to our family that Basalt have it’s own unique art center for creative expression right in the downtown core so it can serve the schools as well as the larger community. And the Wyly does all that,” Karen said. Since the move to it’s current location, Wyly’s pro-

gramming and participation has grown exponentially.

Bayard Hollins’ art is internationally collected. He was classically trained in Florence, Italy, where he lived for eight years. He also studied in France, Spain and at The New York Academy of Art. He has exhibited his work (paintings and sculptures), in galleries and museums locally as well as in: Montecito, California; Islesboro, Maine; Dallas, Texas; and Denver, Colorado. He currently has his paintings in the Caldbeck Gallery in Rockland, Maine. Bayard also teaches art.

“Both Karen and Bayard make a big difference in the Roaring Fork Valley and especially at the Wyly. The Wyly is honored to have the opportunity to show its appreciation for these great people and everything they’ve done to improve our local art community,” said Jay Magidson, interim director of the Wyly Community Art Center.

By S. Michael Jundt Maraki is open in Basalt and owner/operator Etenesh Bartley is sharing her native Ethiopian culture with the Roaring Fork Valley.

You may know Bartley from one of her wonderful meals at the Farmer’s Market, or Carbondale Mountain Fair, or from one of her cooking classes. If you haven’t sampled her food at any of those venues, plan on getting acquainted. If nothing else, your taste buds will absolutely thank you.

Raised in Ethiopia, Bartley’s father worked for the United Nations’ World Health Organization.

“This meant we traveled a lot,” says Bartley. “I learned to eat the cuisine of many different cultures, but it was not the home cooking I was so accustomed to. Fortunately my mother is an amazing cook and we often traveled with our own spices preparing our native meals wherever we went.”

In 2000, college acceptance in the United States brought Bartley to the Roaring Fork Valley where she attended Colorado Mountain College, and later to CU in Boulder. She studied anthropology and archaeology, but as a visit to Maraki will demonstrate, she left digging behind to explore her passion for cooking.

The spices are amazing. Bartley graced me with an offering of mitmita, a blend of habanera, basil, rock salt, and garlic that I used in an Ethiopian lentil and lamb dish. Yes, there were “yummy” sounds coming out of my kitchen all afternoon.

Bartley doesn’t hesitate to speak reverently of the support of her parents; her brother and friends who helped her achieve each goal in life. Maraki is merely another creation she’s been able to achieve due to their constant nourishment.

“The Roaring Fork Valley has been my home for the last 13 years,” says Bartley.“Cooking traditional Ethiopian food has become a way for me to keep in touch with my heritage. Over the years I have been fortunate to introduce friends to my culture through food. As a mother I would like to do the same for my children. It also brings joy to my life to introduce my community to a place that means the world to me, and what better way to do this than through food?”

Exploring Lake Ridge, a ompson Divide landmark A different kind of spectacular

By Lea Linse Special to The Sopris Sun More than anything, Colorado prides itself on its mountains — especially the rugged, spectacular peaks of the Continental Divide and postcard-perfect landscapes like the Maroon Bells.

I’ve been lucky to spend all 18 years of my life living and playing in the mountains of the Roaring Fork, Crystal, and Fryingpan river valleys, and you can count me as someone who will always have a special place in her heart for those needle peaks and knife-like ridges. Over this summer though, I have discovered and come to love a very different place: the Lake Ridge area of the Thompson Divide.

Lake Ridge doesn’t appear on postcards, and you won’t hear it mentioned in four foreign languages as you walk through Aspen.

It is a place that relatively few people visit, except for hunters, sportsmen, ranchers and quiet-seekers who have found their perfect niche there. I love it for its accessible remoteness and for its unique beauty. It is an escape from the sometimes intense and crowded mountains upvalley.

What it is For those accustomed to high-altitude ridges that look down on turquoise lakes, do not expect the same from Lake Ridge. Its beauty is of a different sort.

Lake Ridge is a moderately steep, forested ridge situated southwest of Carbondale, comfortably below timberline.

The best way to access the top is on the Lake Ridge Lakes trail (yes, there are a pair of small, reedy lakes balanced on the side of Lake Ridge). The ridgeline near the lakes is free of trees, but bears wildflowers from June through July. Scrubby patches of bushes occasionally appear as well, interspersed with lichen-covered piles of whitishgrey rock and low, groundcover plants. Wild roses are among them.

Most of the valley to the west is covered with rolling aspen and pine forests, with occasional green, grassy clearings that reminded me of ski runs. From the ridge, you can look east to the Avalanche Creek valley, the upper reaches of Perham Creek Trail, and as far south as Marble and Chair Mountain. The land to the east, between the ridge and the Crystal Valley, is flatter and more open, and very photogenic. Yellow and green fields, bright aspens, red scrub, and dark pines intermingle before the stunning backdrop of Mount Sopris. The peak appears massive and cone-shaped from this vantage point; its glacial features are unusually pronounced.

Seldom do I see more than one or two other vehicles on the back roads when I’m there, or other hikers on the trails — all in places less than an hour’s drive from town. Visitors are usually concentrated in a few popular areas of Thompson Divide — Marion Gulch, Four Mile and the Fins — so places like Lake Ridge go largely unnoticed.

At Lake Ridge, wildlife is more plentiful, trails are less trampled, and the ground is unmarred by frequent campers. It is nice to escape the crowds for a casual day hike; to accomplish the same thing on other trails in the valley, you often have to go on a

multi-day trek. Hiking along Lake Ridge, my friend made the comment that she had no idea that an area like this existed so close to town.

Unfortunately Unfortunately, the remoteness of the Thompson Divide serves as both a blessing and a curse. Lake Ridge and much of the surrounding area, including parts of Four Mile and Huntsman’s Ridge near McClure Pass, is leased for natural gas development.

of an internationally recognized icon, or a hotspot for recreational tourism, the BLM might have thought twice before selling energy leases there. Yet, at the same time, it seems that greater popularity and visitation would compromise the secluded charm and fragile environment that makes the area unique. The very thing that makes the Thompson Divide so worth protecting also makes it more difďŹ cult to protect.

It’s a lot to live up to, but Dority isn’t daunted: “There’s only a couple of tall girls, but this group has tremendous self discipline. They’re really supportive of each other, always pushing themselves, trying to make a good practice.�

She turns to the two practice courts set up in the gym behind her. “This court is mostly juniors and seniors, and the other one is all grades. But you can barely tell. They all work together.�

Dority credits their dedication to tremendous community support and strong parental involvement, which has also resulted in an unprecedented turnout from the freshmen class: 20 new players joining eight sophomores, four juniors, and nine seniors.

Right now, all the players are on an even footing. With the Eagle Valley scrimmage cancelled, the coaches have until the Glenwood Invitational, Aug. 29-31, to ďŹ gure out the team’s lineup and pick the starters. In Glenwood, the Rams will face about a dozen area schools. They might even get a chance to test their skills against rivals like Cedaredge, Olathe and Hotchkiss.

Next steps

Directions to Lake Ridge Lakes Trail: from the stoplight at Main Street and Highway 133 in Carbondale, drive west and cross the Crystal River on the CRMS Bridge. Head up Sweet Hill and follow the road for 7.4 miles until you reach a dirt road that veers left. Turn here.

Go another 4 miles; you will come to a fork in the road. Go straight (the right fork). Follow this road for 4.7 miles to a clearing in the bottom of the valley and a lightly used dirt road to the left. Turn here and park in the field. The trail begins on the other side of the creek and is marked with a sign. It is roughly 2 miles to the lakes then only a few minutes up to the actual ridge.

Note: Parts of this road quickly become impassible in rain. You will need a vehicle with moderately high clearance; a fourwheel-drive vehicle is preferred due to some steep sections.

Soccer With RFHS soccer becoming a major contender on the state level, you’d expect Nick Forbes to be more on edge. After all, in his years as assistant coach under Aaron Anderson, the Rams have made the state bracket twice. Moreover, he’ll be leading the team in matches against his alma mater, CRMS, where his father is also a soccer coach.

It’s enough to make anyone competitive, but Forbes is keeping his cool. “I try to be a positive coach. You won’t hear me yelling at the players.�

As the team takes to the ďŹ eld on Monday, it doesn’t look like they need much direction. The team ďŹ nds its center around a strong core of returners: Lalo Clemente, Armando Ramos, Ben Carpenter, Eric Carillo, Jack Fisher and Alex Fisher. They’re small, quick, and very technical in what Forbes terms “the Spanish style.â€?

The Rams travel to Basalt for their ďŹ rst game at 4 p.m. on Sept. 5. The Longhorns are also likely to ďŹ eld a strong team, as are the Coal Ridge Titans. Aspen and Vail Mountain are also possible rivals for the 2013 season.

As for the starters lost to academics or graduation, Forbes thinks they can make it work.“We might have to tweak the style a bit, but I think we have the resources we need.�
