Five reasons why Carbondale should care

By Barbara Dills I’ll admit it upfront—I’m a fan of bike racing. I caught the bug when my son was 12 and started competing in the mountain bike races on Mt. Hood. Like most Portland kids, he’d tried various overtly team sports over the years: soccer, baseball, basketball. None of them had captured his passions or imagination the way cycling did. What struck me immediately at those races on the flank of Oregon’s highest peak was what a stunningly nice group of people they attracted, racers and supporters alike. There was a sense of camaraderie I’d never experienced among parents on opposing teams in other sports. A universal celebration of the winners, even if you or your family member wasn’t among them. Nathan went on to an impressive mountain biking and road race career, first at the University of Colorado and, later, as a professional. In all the races I attended, that same spirit always prevailed.

And that’s reason #1 Carbondale should care that the biggest bike race in America is about to roll through town. It’s likely to attract a whole bunch of nice people from places far and near, not to mention the 128 riders from 30 countries who have signed on for a grueling seven-day trek through the Rockies. Let’s give them a typically colorful and warm Carbondale welcome.

Reason #2: The world will be watching. I followed nearly every day of this year’s Tour de France on NBC Sports Network, as I do most years. July wouldn’t be July without it.

Cycling is almost as popular a spectator sport in Europe as football (er, soccer), and the USA Pro Challenge has captured the at-

tention of a huge European audience. It was promoted on every broadcast of the Tour de France, and many top riders from the tour will be racing here in Colorado. Let’s show our friends around the country — and especially abroad — that we can line the streets with the best of them.

Reason #3: Cheer on the local boys, the sprinters, and the “old man.” This year’s USA Pro Challenge roster includes Aspen resident Tejay van Garderen, the 2013 defending champion and one of the top young riders in the world.

Tejay also just placed an impressive fifth in the Tour de France. The winner of last year’s Aspen stage of this same race, long-time offand-on-Coloradan Tom Danielson, will be riding for the Boulder-based team GarminSharp. The pack also will include some top sprinters — including World Time-Trial Champion Australian Michael Rogers — who will be looking to show their talents as they speed through Carbondale. And nobody should count out the oldest rider at this year’s tour, 42-year old Jens Voigt of Germany, who has chosen the USA Pro Challenge as the final race of his professional career because “(Colorado) is a beautiful state and I just always love the warm welcome and the support I get from the fans.” If you’ve ever heard Jens interviewed you’ll understand why this commensurate sportsman deserves a wave and a cheer next Tuesday.

Reason #4: Inspire your kids … and expand your understanding of “team.” OK, here’s where I really get philosophical. In most sports, it’s your team against my team, start to finish. In bike racing (as in just a few similar endurance sports) the top competitors do rely

Knowing Robin

By Jane Bachrach The death of Robin Williams is a tragedy not only for his friends and family but for audiences everywhere, who laughed at his antics, reveled in his humor and appreciated his talent.

But who was Robin Williams? I mean, who was the man behind the goofy, talented genius who made millions laugh over and over again.

There are many people that knew Robin a lot better than I did, but I do know who he was and I knew him pretty well. I am devastated that he took his own life and right now, angry with myself that I haven’t stayed in touch since I moved from Los Angeles to Colorado. I’m angry because maybe I could have, in some way, said something to him that might have kept him from taking his own life.

That sounds presumptuous, I know, but there was a time when I was pretty depressed and Robin cheered me up, and I so wish I could have returned the favor.

Obviously my depression wasn’t nearly as severe as Robin’s, and when I think about it now, I was just depressed over an incident.

That doesn’t minimize, however, what the real Robin Williams did to help me. You see, I was

at a party at his ranch in the Napa Valley and at one point in tears. When Robin saw me crying he left the other partygoers, took my hand, led me away from the crowd, sat me down and asked what was wrong. We then had a heart to heart talk during which he gave me some advice that made a lot of sense at the time and changed my attitude. He wasn’t joking or being funny. He was just being Robin, the kind, sensitive, gracious man that lived inside, behind the comic genius. That was the Robin I knew and admired.

I used to spend a fair amount of time with Robin because his manager, David Steinberg, and I lived together and we both worked in comedy. David was and still is a talent manager. Until Aug. 11, among his clients were Robin Williams and Billy Crystal. Before going freelance, I was an associate producer working at a production company that produced comedy shows. I worked on two TV shows with Robin and because of David’s role in guiding Robin’s career, we spent time with him. We traveled together, had meals together and I attended many of his performances. After David and I broke up, Robin and his wife still came to my wedding. I knew Robin Williams then. Not just the funny guy who was “on” most of the time, but also the person.

on their teammates—to pace them, to make sure they have water and food at the right times, to provide the all-powerful slipstream that eases effort. But bike racers also put their lives — and their chances of winning — in the hands (in this case, on the wheels) of their adversaries. It’s one of the only sports where competitors are frequently called on to help each other, at least until the final moments.

For me, this makes it a sport for our times.

Collaboration is often the key to success or survival. It’s not just about winning. Think about that as you watch this pack of insanely fit and dedicated humans hurl themselves down Main Street. And then, if you get hooked like I have, watch a mountain stage on TV with your kids next week. You’ll likely see collaboration in action in a way that is rare in the world of competitive sports.

Reason #5: What better way to spend a lunch break? The festivities kick off in the morning with massive chalk drawing opportunities starting at 10 a.m. (Chalk art that will very likely be captured by helicopter-based cameras and broadcast worldwide!) If you can’t break away that early, head to Main Street just before noon to await the arrival of the lead riders. The race’s passage through town shouldn’t last much more than 30 minutes, and if the riders are bunched, could be even faster. Make signs, wear (tasteful) costumes, bring cowbells, drums, and other noisemakers. This is spectacle as well as spectator sport.

The USA Pro Challenge really is a chance to put Carbondale’s special spirit—and bikefriendliness—on the international map. Let’s not squander it.

Because of David’s and my careers, I met and spent a lot of time around comedians; watching their shows, talking to them, going to local comedy clubs looking for talent, hanging out — whatever. Out of every comedian I met or worked with, except for Billy Crystal, there wasn’t one I came into contact with that came close to being the kind human being that Robin was.

In my opinion, besides being a comic genius and dramatic talent, Robin was one of the funniest people that ever lived. He also had a big heart and made time for other people. At least that was my experience.

The public is sad about losing Robin Williams. In addition to his humor, his vulnerability and sensitivity came across to audiences and I think that’s why so many people that didn’t even know him loved him, because they could see the real person that he was.

Robin’s death and the way he died is a tragedy and I am still in shock and really sad.

I don’t know why, but I want others to know that not only did we lose an amazing talent, we lost an incredible person.

Bike race shuts streets; volunteers step up

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer A big chunk of Carbondale turns into a “can’t get there from here” kind of place when the 550-mile USA Pro Challenge professional bicycle race blows through town on its way from Aspen to Crested Butte on Aug. 19.

Due to the course layout and safety concerns, residents and others south of Main Street to Snowmass Drive/ Highway 133, and between Sopris Park/Weant Boulevard and Snowmass Drive, will not be allowed to cross those streets while the race rolls through town, according to the Colorado State Patrol and town officials.

Colorado State Patrol Cpt. Richard Duran said those streets will be on “lock down” for anywhere from five to 30 minutes during the race. “Nobody crosses the road,” he told a briefing of town staffers on Monday.

Residents in the part of Carbondale mentioned above cannot escape town via Snowmass Drive, because County Road 100 will be closed when racers enter it from Highway 82, and can’t get from Snowmass Drive to Highway 133 because the highway will be closed at that intersection.

Town manager Jay Harrington told The Sopris Sun the town has notified residents along the course about road closures on Aug. 19. Other residents received notification of the race and road closures in their water bills. Pitkin County has also contacted residents up the Crystal that Highway 133 will be closed in both directions for a period of time on Aug. 19.

What this means for those folks, is that they will not be able to enter Carbondale on Highway 133 from about noon to about 2 or 3 p.m. McClure Pass will be closed in both directions from 1 to 3 p.m., according to race officials.

The USA Pro Challenge starts in Aspen on Aug. 18, with

subsequent stops in Crested Butte, Gunnison, Colorado Springs, Woodland Park, Breckenridge, Vail and Boulder, before wrapping up in Denver on Aug. 24.

The race is attracting some of the best professional racers in the world, and is the top bicycle race in the U.S., according to observers. Approximately 128 racers will pedal through Carbondale. The race will be broadcast worldwide.

Monday at town hall, Duran said the race “caravan” will enter Main Street from County Road 100 at about noon. Spectators along the course will know the racers are approaching because a Colorado State Patrol Dodge Charger will lead the caravan into town. Then come other CSP vehicles, the racers themselves and support vehicles.

The caravan’s last vehicle will be a CSP Tahoe SUV. When the last CSP vehicle passes, the streets will be re-opened.

Cpt. Richard Duran The course runs west on Colorado State Patrol Main Street to Seventh Street, south one block to Euclid, east on Euclid for one block to Weant, then south on to Highway 133, where it continues past the fire station and on up the Crystal.

The stretch from Snowmass Drive/Main Street to Weant/ Highway 133 is about a mile, and the racers will be traveling 30-40 miles per hour. Duran said the amount of time it takes the entire caravan to snake its way through town depends on whether the peloton enters town together (which would make for a five minute visit), or whether a break away occurs somewhere upvalley and the pack is strung out.

Getting back to those roads, Harrington said Main Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from Third Street to Weant Boulevard at 10 a.m., with the balance of the streets in the course closing at noon, depending on when PRO CHALLENGE page 9

Bike race affecting Aspen airport Sopris Sun Staff Report When Stage 1 of the USA Pro Challenge begins in Aspen on Aug. 18, the town’s major artery to the airport will be closed for four hours, according to a press release.

Highway 82 from Aspen to the airport will be closed on Aug. 18 from 1 to 5:15 p.m. Brush and Owl Creek roads will also be closed from 1 to 5 p.m., and no vehicles will be allowed in or out of Snowmass Village during this time with the exception of emergency vehicles. Access to or from the airport during Monday’s bike race between Aspen and Snowmass Village will require pre-planning. Public transportation will be allowed access to Highway 82 into and out of Aspen during the race but only “as the race allows.” Since bus schedules will be unpredictable, travelers with flights during the highway closure are advised to get to the airport before the highway closes. RFTA service will not be available to or from Snowmass Village. Travelers arriving at the airport may wait until the roads reopen or take public transportation to Aspen as busses and vans are allowed through after the racers pass.

RFTA buses and hotel limos and vans will operate between the airport and a staging area at Owl Creek Road during the race. After the racers pass, public transportation only will be allowed to continue into Aspen. Private vehicles will be turned around by the Colorado State Patrol. There will be no private vehicle access to Aspen during the race.

On Tuesday, Aug. 19, up to 30-minute traffic delays can be expected on Highway 82 between 10:30 a.m. and noon. Travelers on Tuesday are advised to allow extra time to get to the airport for their flights.

e sport of kings Polo has returned to Carbondale with the opening of the Aspen Valley Polo Club. The property at the corner of Catherine Store Road and Highway 82 was purchased by Marc and Melissa Ganzi, who refurbished the existing barn, added stalls, built housing for visiting players and employees, put in a grass polo field, and an arena where players can play a much quicker game of polo.

The club will be open June through August, and in December for snow polo. During the rest of the year the facility will be open for boarding. Sopris Therapy Services remains on the property and is open year round.

The last game of the year is the finals of the Rocky Mountain Open on Aug 24 at 3 p.m.

Games are open to the public and polo lessons are available during the summer.

Does ’67 really rule?

Ever since the Carbondale Branch Library opened last summer, the most common inscription on the public chalkboard facing Third Street is “’67 Rules.” This apparent statement-of-fact always reappears after it rains or all the other art and messages are washed away. Does anyone out there know what ’67 Rules refers to? Are we talking the high school class of 1967? Are there 67 Rules that the writer infers we should all be living by? Isn’t there a local band named Old ’67? One theory is that whoever keeps writing ’67 Rules on the board must live within about a block of the library, because it shows up with such regularity … in fact, one Sopris Sunner knows a guy in the area who graduated from high school in the late 1960s. Expensive home up for grabs Family and friends threw a surprise 80th birthday party at Sopris Park for Verne Soucie on Aug. 9 (note the dark glasses, which were one of his presents). Soucie was born near Sterling, Colorado, on Sept. 11, 1934 during the Dust Bowl years, and remembers his mother saying the dust storms made the house so dark she had to turn on the lights at noon. Celebrating the pet Alpine Animal Hospital held its Celebration of the Pet last Saturday at Crown Mountain Park in El Jebel.

Obituary Kathy Sharp (Van Ness) 1949-2014 Kathy Sharp, 65, better known as the wife of local attorney John Van Ness, died on Aug. 10, 2014 from injuries suffered when her car was broadsided by a vehicle at a red light at the intersection of Highway 82 and the Catherine Store Road.

Kathy was born and raised in Memphis,

Tennessee, where she attended Memphis State University. In 1976 she discovered the Colorado mountains, where she soon met John. She moved in with John In Woody Creek in 1986 and they relocated to Carbondale four years ago.

Burial will be at Memorial Park in Memphis on Aug. 16, 2014. A memorial service will be planned in the valley in late September.

Kathy was loved and appreciated by her many friends throughout the valley.

the racers will enter. Parked cars must be off the course by 6 a.m. During the race, pedestrians will be able to cross Main Street west of Seventh Street.

Back out on County Road 100, Duran said that as the race approaches Carbondale, two CSP troopers will stop east bound traffic on Highway 82. A trooper and Garfield County staffers will be stationed at roads that intersect County Road 100 to prevent anyone from leaving. Traffic heading south from Missouri Heights will be allowed to turn west onto Highway 82.

Duran said that on Highway 133, racers should arrive at Redstone at about 1:10 p.m., plus or minus 20 minutes. At total of about 17 volunteers, Pitkin County employees and CSP troopers will be stationed at roads and sub-division entrances from Prince Creek to County Road 3.

In town, the race is being staffed by a total of 75 volunteers, said Carbondale Chamber of Commerce Director Andrea Stewart. Of that total, there are seven police officers and 30 other town employees at about 30 locations along the course, according to a town memo.

Tonic Juicery: fresh squeezed, ready to go Tucked into Main Street courtyard

By Nicolette Toussaint Sopris Sun Correspondent While Sismai Moreno, the barista, pours claret-colored juice into a paper tasting cup for a first-time visitor, two additional customers step into the Tonic Juicery.

The juice bar, tucked into the courtyard at 320 Main St., offers a dozen different juices each day, all squeezed fresh on site, made in and expressly for Carbondale.

An artistically chalked menu lists all of the ingredients that go into Tonic’s organic, cold-pressed juices. Ruby Spice, the claret-colored blend in the tasting cup, contains carrot, apple and beet juice, spiced with ginger, turmeric and garam masala. Silky in texture with fruity undertones, it packs a feisty bite.

“Some people say that they have tried

these ingredients and didn’t like them,” Moreno to The Sopris Sun. “But here, sometimes they try again and they say, ‘it’s out of this world.’”

Megan Wussow, who is returning her third visit, encourages Jill Meadows, a second-time customer, to try the red juice. “I have tried Emerald City and Ruby Spice, and they were both awesome,” said Wussow. “Today, I need some turmeric because I have a sore shoulder.” Wussow chooses Island Style, which contains celery, apple, watermelon rind, cilantro, chard, lemon, ginger and turmeric – a spice that has anti-inflammatory qualities.

Bash a smashing success Dear Editor: On Aug. 2, our three organizations hosted the Maroon Bells Birthday Bash to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Maroon Bells– Snowmass Wilderness and of the Wilderness Act, the legislation that forever protected this special place.

The turnout, the outpouring of goodwill, and the sheer joy that everyone brought to the occasion exceeded our wildest expectations! That is what community looks like.

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who came together to create a truly wonderful tribute to our beloved wilderness and the heroes who safeguarded it for us.

Believe it or not Dear Editor: Whether or not you believe man-made climate change is a reality, and taking a toll on our environment, I think we can all agree on this: We’d rather not continue pumping more and more of the dirty fossil fuels into our atmosphere if we didn’t have to.

But why do we have to?

Well, when our monetary-market-system was taking shape a couple hundred years ago, the idea of “resource depletion” was, understandably, never even considered. Unfortunately, it still isn’t. We have a system that’s literally decoupled from the natural world (which is insane), and this makes it difficult to move into the clean, renewable systems, because they have to be cost competitive. Damn.

So how can we make the clean systems more competitive, and the dirty ones less? A carbon tax? Nobody likes the sound of the tword, with visions of more bureaucracy, bigger government and politicians deciding how to allocate the revenue. These concerns helped kill the cap-and-trade proposal. So, what else?

Any carbon tax would most likely be passed along to the consumer, and we’re already stretched to the limit.

How about this? The carbon-intensive energy companies could pay a “fee” based on

how much of these fossil fuels they extract, and instead of the revenue going to the government to be allocated, it would go directly to the consumers. Every household would get a monthly “dividend” deposited into their bank account.

Fee-and-dividend. Yes, some of that fee on the producers would be passed along to the consumers. But this would be balanced by the dividend. Revenue-neutral. Also, this fee on the carbon producers would help the clean energy systems become more competitive.

There are other benefits as well. Check out Citizen’s Climate Lobby (citizensclimatelobby.org), an advocacy group with over 200 chapters around the country, actively working toward this solution, gaining support in Washington from both sides of the aisle. Our representatives have shown interest, but they could use a kick in the butt from their constituents. If you can get on board with this train of thought, take a few minutes to contact them. Thanks for your support Dear Editor: I first want to thank Eagle County residents for your overwhelming support during the primary election. I could not have accomplished this without your insight and support.

A mentor once shared, “a good leader is not the person who can do everything there is to do nor will they be the one who will do everything themselves; a good leader knows their people, understands what motivates them, recognizes each person’s strengths and weaknesses, and surrounds themselves with people that have multiple skill sets that complement each other. “ While employed at the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy for more than 12 years, I was trained and worked as a patrol deputy, field-training officer, hostage/crisis negotiator and investigator. I assisted on interviewing, hiring, training and working alongside many

of the current staff. This gives me insights into understanding their strengths and weaknesses and what motivates them.

My 25 years as an Eagle County resident and my years as a member of the Sheriff’s Office have allowed me to work with and get to know the citizens from the remote northern regions of our county around Bond, Burns and McCoy to the top of Tennessee Pass; from the top of Vail Pass to the communities of El Jebel/Basalt With eight years of international law enforcement experience I have extensive experience in international relations. As a police commander with the U.N. Police Mission in Kosovo, I commanded a staff of 150 law enforcement professionals from all over the world, making sure we had the manpower, equipment and leadership to perform our jobs, train new officers and be prepared for any situation, ensuring the safety of the local population and the officers under my command.

As a police mentor supervisor for the U.S. Department of State in Afghanistan, I managed a large staff charged with training local Afghan police forces, coordinating with military and police command staff, synchronized goals and accomplishing public safety within local governments/communities.

I have experience in coordinating/working with different emergency service agencies during numerous special events throughout Eagle County including the World Forums, ski events, visiting presidents/dignitaries, investigating major eco-terrorist activities and the 1999 Ski Championships. This gives me a solid understanding of what will be necessary to ensure efficient public safety in 2015.

I am in and will remain in communication with the professionals involved in the planning process for 2015. My familiarity with Eagle County is not limited to one area, this gives me the insight to help make this event a success.

I will be completely informed and prepared to lead the Eagle County Sheriff’s Department through the 2015 Ski Championships. Before, during and after this event I will be focused on the issues that impact all of the county and its residents to ensure safety, problem solving and leadership, representing and serving everyone equally as your Sheriff!

SoL eatre shines new light on Krakow plays Sopris Sun Staff Report

In 2005, Carbondale resident Amy Krakow published the third book in her children’s book series, “The Mutt and the Monster.” When numerous kids asked when the fourth book would come out, she mostly responded by telling them that the “trilogy” was complete.

But now, several years later, she has written a musical based on the series.

“From the time the idea popped into my head, to writing it, and finally braving walking into SoL Theatre to meet with directors Logan Carter and Jennifer Michaud, seven years had gone by,” Krakow said. “Aside from working several jobs, too many ski days, and endless summer hikes, the musical spent most of its time inside a desk drawer collecting dust. When Sol Theatre decided to take it on, I spent the next few months editing and polishing it off.”

Based on her own two mutts, Sparky and Spooner, the books tell the comical tale of canine sibling rivalry where both dogs are cast as the underdog, demanding sympathy from readers as they try to convince them that their young owner, Lucy, loves the other one more.

The musical takes them to a courtroom where they finally have the chance to find out who Lucy really loves more, with hilarious results.

Sol Theatre Managing Director Jennifer Michaud showcased the original musical during is 2014 summer camp, in conjunction with the Carbondale Council on the Arts and Humanities

(CCAH), which will culminate in two evening performances: on Aug. 20-21 at 6:30 p.m.

The student cast of 33 young actors will be putting on a colorful, magical, musical version of the story and they will be in charge of everything, including acting, singing, choreography, set design, props, lights, sound and even directing. “These young actors will not only be in a production but will create every piece of the magic in bringing a new musical to the stage,” Michaud said.

Local musician Matt Haslett is taking the lead as music director, assisted by Aspen High School summer intern and actor Emory Major.

They will work along side the kids writing and performing all original songs, as well as playing all the songs in the musical.

SoL Artistic Director Logan Carter will be working with the students on skills ranging from projection to improvisation. Bryan Edelmann, drama teacher at Cornerstone Classic School (and SoL alum), is assisting in bringing the production together, and Amy Krakow herself will be there to help out with character development and background.

Performances will be held at The Third Street Center in Carbondale in the former PAC3, (now known as The Event Hall). Highway 133 project on time, on budget Sopris Sun Staff Report At about half-way through the project, construction on Highway 133 is on time and on budget, according to a Carbondale Chamber of Commerce press release.

“Work on the west side of the roundabout and the reconstruction on the section north of Colorado Avenue into the village is right on target,” said Graham Riddile, Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) engineer. Riddile added that there have been some minor change orders, but that those costs are in line with budget too.

CDOT is widening Highway 133 and upgrading the corridor for about two miles, starting at the intersection of Highway 82. The traffic signals that hung over the intersection of Highway 133 and Main Street were hauled off several weeks ago, and the east side of the new roundabout is open for through traffic in both directions.

At least one business owner on Highway 133 is upbeat, despite the heavy construction equipment that prepares the road in front of his shop for new asphalt. “We planned for the worst and hoped for the best,” said Aloha Mountain Cyclery owner Darren Broome. It turns out it really hasn’t affected us. As a destination business people seek us out,” Broome continued.

“It’s way less painful than we thought it would be and it seems to be going incredibly well for such a huge project.” He added that if people are inconvenienced by the short delays, that by and large, they’ve learned to deal with it. And as a member of the town’s Bike, Pedestrian and Trails Committee, Broome says he’s excited about the new trail connections that will make access to the nearby Dolores Way better and safer.

Riddle said the project partners continue to do their best to minimize wait times and maximize traffic flow. “We understand that this project is different than a typical interstate construction; we’re working in the middle of town and right outside people’s homes. Both CDOT and United Companies, our contractor, have a heightened sensitivity to that.”

What’s this called? A half roundabout? A 180? In any case, construction on the roundabout at Highway 133 and Main Street is about half way complete. The entire two-mile project should be wrapped up in November, according to state officials. Photo courtesy CDOT Retail businesses as a whole also seem to be faring at least OK. The Highway 133 corridor is Carbondale’s biggest salestax generator, and collections for May sales were up 4.5 percent, with June collections up 3.9 percent over last year.

In July, traffic was shifted to the west side of Highway 133 between Colorado Avenue and Dolores Way as work on the east side of the highway got under way. Main Street west of 7/Eleven is closed to through traffic for about another month, as work shifted to the west side of the roundabout. Hendrick

Drive (which intersects both Main Street and Highway 133) is serving as a detour while West Main Street is closed.

Construction on the $9.4 million project, which includes new trails and landscaping along Highway 133, is expected to conclude in November. Partners in design, funding, planning and execution include the town of Carbondale, the Federal Lease Mining District, Garfield County, the Roaring Fork Transit Authority and CDOT.
