KDNK DJs Rev Up for Drive KDNK’s volunteer DJs are rallying around the radio station and celebrating 32 years of community broadcasting. “We are having fun!” was the astounding message reverberating at last week’s DJ meetings. At the meetings, held in KDNK’s Broadcast Learning Center, the volunteers ran through a list of things that they love about KDNK. “Freedom!” “Access.” “The news.” “The community.” “The music.” “The kids.” “Creativity!” “The people.” “The personalities!” “It saved my life!” The announcers, aged nine to ninety were getting pumped for KDNK’s membership drive, which is on until August 21. The theme for the drive is “Connecting Communities.” KDNK has been broadcasting community access radio in downtown Carbondale since 1983. The mission of the station is to provide public access radio that connects community members to one another and the world. “Not every community has its own radio station and none have a radio station quite like this one,” offered General Manager Steve Skinner, noting that KDNK has more than 80 volunteer programmers. KDNK’s unique sound is a mix of local volunteer DJs, youth radio, local news, public affairs and national programming like National Public Radio and Democracy Now! The station can be found at 88.1, 88.3 and 88.5 FM and at KDNK.org. Have you heard the news? The Radio and Television Digital News Association recently announced that KDNK won a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for feature reporting. KDNK’s Amy Hadden-Marsh’s piece on 15-year-old bull rider Tianna Davis took first place. This is the second KDNK’s Amy year in a row that KDNK Hadden-Marsh
has won a Murrow award. KDNK has also won two Certificates of Merit from the Colorado Broadcasters Association (CBA) for medium market radio stations. Volunteer Walter Gallacher’s Immigrant Stories took best “News Feature, Report of Series” for his profile of Alex Gonzalez entitled “Search for the Dream”. KDNK’s Valley Voices won a CBA Certificate of Merit for “Best Public Affairs Show.” Again, Amy Hadden Marsh produced an awardwinning piece with author Kevin Fedarko about his book, The Emerald Mile. These stories and a complete archive of KDNK news is at KDNK.org.

Carbondale Beer Works Enlists Local Chefs for KDNK Blues & BBQ
KDNK is taking this year’s Blues and Barbecue in a new, local direction. The music, food and brew celebration is Saturday, August 15 from 4-10 p.m. at the 4th Street Plaza in downtown Carbondale. Carbondale Beer Works chef Mark Hardin II is pulling together local culinary talent and food. Hardin has organized six local chefs to create signature barbecue dishes using local meat and ingredients. “Everything from the lamb, beef, goats and greens is coming from local sources. This team of chefs knows how to make the most of these unique flavors,” said Hardin. Hardin, a formidable talent in the kitchen himself, is taking the role of conductor for the event. “I’ll help where I’m needed,” he said. Local chefs include Flip Wise, from Meat and Cheese, Ryan Vinciguerra from Slow Groovin’ BBQ, Drew Scott of Downvalley Tavern, Andreas Fischbacher from Allegria, Will Nolan from Viceroy Snowmass and Dave Eisenson from Town. All are donating their time to benefit KDNK. Local food providers include Potter Farms, Sustainable Settings, Avalanche Cheese Company, Milagro Ranch, Mountain Primal and Roaring Gardens. Frank Martin’s new blues band, “Preaching to the Choir,” will open the show at 5:00 p.m. Frank will be joined by locals Bob Levey, Karen Tafejian and Ken Wenciek. Headlining the event is Markus James. “Combining elements of the desert blues of Mali and the hill country blues of Mississippi, Markus James is an entirely original bluesman. With an elliptical style of lyrics and exquisite slide skills on the Fender, the cigar box guitar and the gourd banjo, Markus has the mojo, and it will work on you,” promises KDNK Program Director Luke Nestler.
