Thanks to the police Dear Editor: While at Mountain Fair on Saturday night my almost 14-year-old dog, Frodo, got scared by fireworks in town and jumped out of the vehicle window.

Many thanks to Lani Houseman for contacting the police department. Dispatch was so helpful! Thank you, thank you, thank you to the folks that found him hidden in their garage and also called the police!!

Two officers came to the house (on the busiest night of the year in town) and waited for us to be reunited!!! That's six of you that saved the day. Thank you all so much!

Thanks for the return Dear Editor: I am writing to thank the person or persons who found my daughter’s billfold at Mountain Fair and returned it, with all the cash inside, on July 25.

We live in Easton, Pennsylvania, and my daughter travels to Carbondale each summer to spend several weeks with her grandmother.

If we are lucky, my husband and I are able to join her for part of that visit. We always look forward to our visits to the Roaring Fork Valley, which is such a pleasant change of pace from our daily lives out east.

Mountain Fair is a particularly bright spot in our visits. This year, it started on my daughter’s 11th birthday. She brought over $100, part of the money she had earned since the beginning of this year, to spend at the fair.

She was devastated when she lost her “Iron Pigs” billfold with all of her money inside. She reported the missing billfold, but did not hold much hope for its return. When she called that evening to give us the sad news, I told her that she was in Carbondale, not Easton, and so it was more likely than not that someone would find the wallet and return it.

I was therefore not surprised when she called me on Saturday morning to advise that this is exactly what happened. I was so moved by your honesty I had to reach out to thank you, and so I hope this letter finds you, wherever you are. Thank you for making an 11-year-old girl very happy, and for reinforcing her family’s faith in the goodness of people. We will all definitely “pay it forward.”

Diggin’ the bluegrass Dear Editor: Thanks to all of those that made the 2014 Mountain Fair special for everybody. I would really have liked to hear more of the bluegrass sound. That music was so good and great. I think a lot of people really enjoyed that sound. I heard a lot of great complements.

This is my week and day for no negativity, so I am going to say the vendors were great. Lots of nice things to pick from. Food was good, too. Took me a couple of days to

make it to the popcorn booth. We had a great lunch yesterday as always. Most of those I know made it to the fair on Friday evening. The weather has been pretty good as well. So thanks to the Fair People for making this a great one.

I heard that the Pie Contest was really something, too many to pick from. All really tasty.

Attend fire meeting Dear Editor: The Carbondale Fire District’s 15 person Citizen Advisory Committee (aka the Task Force) after five months of study is sharing its findings and suggestions with fire district board members and the public on Monday, Aug. 4 at 6 p.m. at the fire district headquarters building.

Many interesting thoughts and guiding suggestions were discussed Monday evening, July 21 by the Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC).

The insights expressed by the individuals resounded in a unifying way, creating the basis of reasoning for the general directions suggested for the fire district board to approach it’s monetary issues and any mil levy adjustment.

Please come to this final CAC summary meeting with friends and neighbors.

Enjoying the Surls talk Dear Editor: I’ve enjoyed the lively discussion on the major, 20-foot-high piece by James Surls at our new roundabout, recently approved by the town trustees to be installed this fall. This process has had folks talking about art.

The Surls sculpture is made of stainless steel and bronze and has organic references that I think match Carbondale’s heritage. It is valued at about $400,000, half of which is a gift from Surls. The other $200,000 will be entirely contributed from private sources with a lead gift from Jim Calaway.

Art is becoming increasingly important for our town and we are becoming a player in a rapid regional change of more and better art.

Consider the Surls piece, the lively annual change of sculpture of our Art aRound Town series, the recent opening of the beautiful Powers Museum (adjacent to Planted Earth and having a highly complete collection of Jasper Johns prints), our fine new library, and the recent Colorado award to CCAH that recognizes Carbondale as a Creative District.

Some of us remember, in 1972, when Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s monumental art curtain at Rifle Gap blew down only 28 hours after it was hung. That was one start with our regional art and I still have a poster of that beautiful curtain tacked on the wall of my garage. Along the Arkansas River, that same couple’s project “Over the River” is now getting closer to happening. This installation will

consist of 6.7 miles of horizontally suspended translucent fabric panels, high over the river, between Salida and Cañon City. This installation will be a major international draw.

With “Over the River,” the opening of the new Aspen Art Museum, and all that is happening around Carbondale, our region will be increasingly a tourist destination for art.

This will add to our economic vitality. I find this all pretty exciting. But what is this all really about? The answer, I think was given at a recent talk by James Surls, who quoted Leo Tolstoy along the lines of “great art is partly intended to motivate viewers to see the beauty in art and have that beauty transferred to their own hearts.”

Buddy thanks Dear Editor: The Buddy Program would like to acknowledge the generosity of all those who contributed to the success of this year’s Honky-Tonkin’ Bash for the Buddies. Over 400 guests and volunteers came out to support the Buddy Program and the 1,000 youth who are empowered through mentoring experiences in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Fire board convenes Aug. 4; tax talk expected CAC recommendations released

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer The Carbondale Fire Board meets in a special session on Aug. 4 to receive the ďŹ nal report from its Citizen Advisory Committee that among other items: • Does not recommend asking voters for a property tax hike in November; • Suggests the district consider continuing to dip into its reserve fund, dropping it from enough money to cover six months of expenses to three months; • Says the board should look at adjusting wages and beneďŹ ts paid to ďŹ re district staff members.

The Aug. 4 meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District headquarters, located at the south end of town on Meadowood.

The ďŹ ve-member Carbondale Fire Board appointed a 17-member Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) earlier this year to make recommendations, after voters overwhelmingly shot down a mill levy ballot question in November that would have increased property

taxes that pay for such services as ďŹ re ďŹ ghting and ambulances in a 320-square-mile area that stretches from Marble to Missouri Heights.

The CAC has meet monthly since February and held its ďŹ nal meeting on July 21. Committee members in attendance were: Chuck Torinus, Connie Hendrix, Davis Farrar, Jason Sewell, John Haines, Ken Harrington, Lance Luckett, Mo Shalabi, Ray Sauvey, Richard Fuller, Tom Flynn, Joanne Teeple and Michael Hassig.

Others present included facilitators Hilary Fletcher and Tom Baker, district employees Jenny Cutright, Ron Leach and Rob Goodwin, and members of the public Mark Chain, Hank Van Berlo and Jeff Wadley.

At its July 21 meeting, the committee discussed four options. Options three and four were quickly eliminated, and included raising the district’s mill levy to fund “everything� according to the meeting’s minutes, and making cuts to balance the budget.

Late last year, the ďŹ re board approved a 2014 budget that took $700,000 from reserves and also cut $500,000 from the 2013 funding level. The decline in revenues is brought on by

Library district zeroing in on new strategic plan

Most of the CAC’s focus during its most recent meeting was on Option 1 and Option 2, with the ďŹ rst option winning a straw vote 11-2.

Option 1 includes asking voters for a short term tax hike in one or two years, as a “bridgeâ€? until property values increase, and updating the district’s masterplan with “signiďŹ cantâ€? community involvement.

The GarďŹ eld County Public Library district is about half way through a strategic planning process that includes public input sessions beginning in Glenwood Springs on Aug. 5 and concluding in Carbondale on Aug. 27.

The process, facilitated by JVA Consulting, is focused on creating a strategic vision and marketing plan, district director Amelia Shelley told The Sopris Sun in an e-mail.

Shelley said the strategic vision and marketing plan’s goals are to “determine how we can better reach the under-served and unserved segments of our communities, improve and streamline our existing marketing efforts, optimize our online and social media presence, and generally heighten the visibility of our library services.�

Construction trucks and regular vehicles did the dosey doe on Monday, with construction activities shifting to the east side of Highway 133 and through trafďŹ c on the west. To allow access to the shopping centers on the east side of Highway 133, the contractor took out sections of concrete Jersey barriers in front of La Fontana, the Roaring Fork Valley Co-op and the other shopping areas. The openings are about three-vehicles wide, which is enough space to allow left and right turns out of shopping center parking lots, and a single lane into the parking lots. By Tuesday afternoon, motorists seemed to have pretty much ďŹ gured out how to maneuver their vehicles without undue stress – or aggers. Construction on Highway 133 is expected to continue into November.

The Mountain Fair Green Team diverted more than 90 percent of the event’s trash away from the landfill and into recycling or compost programs last weekend, according to team co-director Jason White. In an e-mail in response to a Sopris Sun question, White thanked Alyssa Reindel of Evergreen Events for working with vendors to bring compostable supplies with which to serve to the public; Annie Worley for rounding up the “next generation” of volunteers (70 volunteers in all); and Cathy Hall of the Pitkin County landfill for accepting Mountain Fair compost because she supports the high level of “zero waste” awareness at the fair.

Cop Shop The following events are drawn from incident reports of the Carbondale Police Department.

TUESDAy July 29 At 10:40 p.m.

Carbondale police responded to the last of several bear reports in the past week. In the July 29 incident, a bear was reported getting into a trash can on Barber Drive. Police were unable to locate the bear. Other reports were received in the 100 block of Highway 133, the 100 block of Capitol Avenue and the 100 block of Euclid Avenue.

MONDAy July 28 At 6:53 p.m. an officer responded to a homeless man at a RFTA bus stop who was being aggressive in his “quest” of “begging for money.” The officer warned the individual and advised him to get on the bus he was waiting for.

SUNDAy July 27 At 10:11 p.m. a man gave a police officer a wallet he found at a restaurant.

SATURDAy July 26 At 2:32 a.m. police responded to a fight at a party on Garfield Avenue. Police remained at the party until everyone left.

Dr. Dave’s Herbal Medicine: East meets west on Weant

By Nicolette Toussaint Sopris Sun Correspondent Every year, thousands of small, root-beer colored bottles holding herbal tinctures wend their way from Weant Boulevard here in Carbondale to patients and medical practitioners all across the United States.

Dr. Dave’s Herbal Medicine comes in nine different remedies: Allergies Away, Super Sinus, Throat Zap, Cough Arrest, Sinus Guard, Immune Defense, an immune-boosting Mushroom Tonic, Good Night and Meno-Pause.

Originally sold from the Carbondale Acupuncture Center and a few retail outlets in the Roaring Fork Valley and Boulder, the herbal tinctures are now carried by more than 60 retail outlets across more than 15 states. The company also does a brisk online business from DrDaves.com, an ecommerce website recently redesigned by another Carbondale firm, Steller Studio.

A shelf in the Carbondale Acupuncture Center’s reception area displays a cluster of small brown tincture bottles adorned with a lotus leaf label. Around the corner, the wall of Dr. Dave Teitler’s office reveals a sight reminiscent of Beijing, or perhaps San Francisco’s Chinatown – it’s an apothecary collection with more than 200 jars of herbs. The herbs, which are free of sulfur, pesticides and chemicals, do in fact hail from China, by way of Oakland.

If you were to visualize a Chinese herbalist, he probably wouldn’t be tall and strawberry blond. But Teitler, who recently celebrated the 10-year anniversary of his founding of the Carbondale Acupuncture Clinic, is a licensed herbalist and acupuncturist. As recently as last fall, he trained in Kunming, China.

der. After a post-graduation trip to China, he attended a three-year acupuncture/herbal medicine school in Denver, where most of his herbal teachers were Chinese.

Having picked up a little Mandarin in China, he was less intimated by the language than many of his classmates. “It was easier to for me pick up herb names and acupuncture points,” he said. “For example, there’s an acupuncture point called bai hui. In Chinese, it means 100 flowers. If you understand the meaning, it makes it easier to integrate and use the herb or acupuncture point.”

Asked if he can still speak Chinese, Teitler replied, “Yi dian dian,” and then translated, “A little bit.”

In 1999, while working at the Mid-Valley Chiropractic and Wellness Center, Teitler learned to make tinctures from a fellow employee. “I was treating a lot of people who had allergies and sinus problems,” he recalls. “I found I was making very similar herbal formulas for a lot of people, so I started making tinctures up as allergy and sinus remedies.”

Teitler’s remedies are formulated specifically for the local climate and environment. “For our allergy, sinus and cough remedies, we make sure that they are moistening and not overly drying,” he explained. “If you dry mucus and phlegm in Colorado, where your nasal passages are already too dried out, you end up cementing dry mucus and phlegm into the nose, sinus cavities and lungs. To treat a Colorado sinus infection, or the dry cough that won’t go away, you need to moisten the sinuses and lungs.”

Has it really been 45 years since a half-million hippies and straight kids swarmed a 600-acre farm in upstate New York and enjoyed four days of “fun ‌ and nothing but fun ‌ â€?? Folk singer Arlo Guthrie was apparently the ďŹ rst to alert the growing crowd to what was happening beyond the gates and fences that by then were already coming down. “The New York State Freeway is closed ‌ “ he said, before concluding “ ‌ lotta freaks.â€? One of the most remembered Woodstock quotes, uttered during the event itself, came from unofďŹ cial MC Wavy Gravy. “Good morning,â€? he shouted out from the stage to begin day number two. “What we have in mind is breakfast for 400,000 ‌ We must be in heaven, man.â€? Clay Center opens DeBolt The Carbondale Clay Center hosts a reception for Staci DeBolt’s show, titled “Wax Fruit,� from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 1. August marks the end of DeBolt’s two-year residency at the Carbondale Clay Center so drop by on Friday night and say hi.

Mountain Fair Hula Hoop contest organizer Betty Hoops reports the following: the event attracted more than 100 kids and about 10 adults; it entailed about 50 cross-training moves while hooping on the waist, including standing on one foot, running in place, walking over and under the limbo pole and ďŹ nishing with a hoop dance off. The winners were: adult division, Laurie Guevara-Stone; kids division, Skyler Ulveda, Lucia Candano and Conner Hoffman.

If you’re looking for one more reason to attend the Maroon Bells Bash at Aspen Highlands on Aug. 2, author Rick Bass will be the keynote speaker at 5:30 p.m. Bass, a shortstory writer, has won numerous awards, including the O. Henry and Pushcart prize. He was also awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. His books include “The Wild Marsh: Four Seasons at Home in Montana,� “Why I Came West� and “All the Land to Hold Us.� The entire Maroon Bells Bash will take place from 3 to 9 p.m.; it honors the 50th anniversary of the federal Wilderness Act. Long-time local Melissa Miller has been promoted to director of the Gathering Center at the Orchard. She takes over from Scott Robinson, who leaves after ďŹ ve years to spend more time with his wife and twins, according to a press release. Miller has been part of The Orchard team since 2010, assisting Lead Pastor Charley Hill as the Ministry Coordinator, leading the Women’s Ministry and jumping in whenever needed. “We are excited to have Melissa bring her event experience talents from her time as event director at Aspen Glen, plus years of time in the event rental industry,â€? said Hill. Castle Valley Children’s Clinic opens in Carbondale Kids are their business Barbara Dills Sopris Sun Correspondent Castle Valley Children’s Clinic (CVCC), the only freestanding pediatric medical facility in our area, has just opened a satellite clinic on Dolores Way in Carbondale. The staff was available starting July 21 for drop-ins and emergency cases, and the first pre-scheduled patients were welcomed to the new facility this past Monday. A grand opening celebration is planned for later this summer.

CVCC has operated in New Castle since the late 1990s. In 2002, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Debbie Anne Moeller RN, MS, CPNP purchased the clinic and has been at the helm ever since. In addition to Moeller, the medical team includes Carey Levin, MD, and Joan Neff RN, MS, CPNP. The office manager is Jo Ellyn Bradley. Two medical assistants and two receptionists round out the current staff; CVCC is currently advertising for a bi-lingual receptionist or medical assistant to help out in Carbondale. Interested individuals should contact the clinic for details or to apply.

The staff describes Castle Valley Children’s Clinic as a “patient centered medical home … committed to offering your children a family-oriented approach towards their health and wellness.” As a certified Colorado Medical Home, CVCC strives to incorporate seven essential components. It aims to be: accessible; family-centered; continuous; comprehensive; coordinated; compassionate; and culturally effective. The ColoradoMedicalHome.org website describes what each of those components encompasses and states, “At the core of the medical home is the patient’s personal, comprehensive, long-term relationship with a primary care physician and a philosophy of care focused on preventing illness and helping patients take an active role in promoting their own good health.”

Viewing health care as a partnership with parents, CVCC does not exclude patients based on vaccination philosophy or other personal nutrition or health choices. All members of the medical staff are Spanish speaking (two are fluent speakers). Besides being independently owned and operated, another distinguishing characteristic is the clinic’s mission “to provide quality, collaborative healthcare to all children, regardless of ability to pay.” CVCC accepts all insurances, including Medi-

caid/CHP+, as well as private paying patients.

Dr. Levin has been practicing at CVCC since 2011, the first few years splitting her time between Colorado and the University of California San Francisco, where she completed her pediatric residency in a specialized training program for underserved medicine, the PLUS (Pediatric Leadership for the Underserved) Program. A 1995 graduate of Colorado Rocky Mountain School, she currently lives in Marble with her husband and young daughter.

Debbie Anne Moeller is a native of Glenwood Springs. Her background includes working for many years in the neonatal care units at Children’s Hospital Colorado and Presbyterian St, Luke’s in Denver. Joan Neff brings a similarly impressive resume. She worked with children in an inpatient trauma center, a newborn nursery and an adolescent correctional facility before arriving at CVCC. Said Levin in an interview with The Sopris Sun, “I feel like I learn something from those two amazing women every day.”

The clinic in New Castle has been serving a wide geographic area for some time, welcoming patients from Paonia, the Crystal Valley, the entire Roaring Fork Valley, Meeker, and Eagle, as well as from the neighboring communities of Silt and Rifle. The demand from our valley helped spur the decision to open a satellite office here.

The clinic on Dolores Way comprises four exam rooms, a small lab, a child-oriented waiting room, and a state-of-theart conference facility, eventually to be made available to the broader medical community for teleconferencing. Initial clinic hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and 1 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, with plans to increase those hours as the schedule fills.

La Fogata has been serving up authentic Mexican and Salvadorian food at Mountain Fair since 2006. Although La Fogata operates as a Mountain Fair food stand once a year, look for a permanent restaurant with the same name to open in Carbondale in August.

La Fogata: A family affair at Carbondale Mountain Fair Jimmy Serrano Sopris Sun Intern La Fogata is a locally run stand at Mountain Fair. It began with a simple idea: having fun selling authentic Mexican and Salvadorian food. The main dishes include pupusas and ceviche along with melon juice. It came together as Maria, Marta, Estella and Veronica Serrano, with the help of a family friend, Bridget McIntrye, decided on starting a small stand at Mountain Fair. In 2006, their ideas became reality.

“It started like a game. We thought about selling food on the corner, but Bridget mentioned Mountain Fair. To us it seemed like a great idea,” said Maria when interviewed.

Eight years later, their enjoyable tradition continues. Every summer, two to three weeks before Mountain Fair, supplies are readied

and ingredients are bought from local markets. Everything is done in an effort to ensure a successful year.

“We like seeing people enjoy our food and having people tell us they like it,” mentioned Estella. “It’s become a custom to be at Mountain Fair and we are happy to be a part of it.”

Future plans for La Fogata include the continuation of its Mountain Fair stand along with a new addition: a restaurant opening on Aug. 30 in Carbondale. The restaurant will include a much larger selection of Mexican and Salvadoran dishes.

“La Fogata allows us to socialize with many people; because of that, we love it!” said Martha. The new restaurant will be run

by Estella and Martha Serrano with other family members helping out.

2014 Mountain Fair pretty quiet Sopris Sun Staff Report If Carbondale police reports are any indication, last weekend’s Mountain Fair was pretty quiet, with few if any direct incidents in Sopris Park, but with a scattering beyond. Open containers seem to be the most popular offense, followed by noise complaints (which included a drum circle). There were no cases of reefer smokers toking up in public. FRIDAy July 25 At 10:42 p.m. a police officer contacted a male at a Main Street bar who was “about to urinate in public.” The report continued, “The male became very argumentative and upset with the officer.”

FRIDAy July 25 At 11:24 p.m. at Fourth and Main, police resonded to a report of several intoxicated males but their actions were “Not criminal in nature.”

WILD AT HEART Photos and text by Jane Bachrach “Wild at Heart” was the theme at this year’s Carbondale Mountain Fair as fairgoers and entertainers carried out the theme creatively and literally. Some local creatures crept out of the surrounding wilderness while others simply lived the wild life all weekend long. The call of the wild beckoned performers as well, and some even participated in what became a wild game of wood splitting.

Laurie Loeb returned to the drum circle this year and used some wild gestures never before seen by fairgoers to communicate what she wanted participants to do because she couldn’t be heard due to a microphone malfunction. Some drummers were laughing so hard they were unable to pick up the beat. Even nature was wild with some pretty strong rain and thunderstorms that refused to dampen anybody’s spirits.

Despite the wild weekend, the heart of Mountain Fair was always present, surrounding Sopris Park and Carbondale with love.

Members of the Crested Butte Mountain Rescue team found the body of 39-year-old Uriah Shaffer in the Crystal River about four miles south of the Gunnison/Pitkin County line on July 26, according to a press release. On May 31, Shaffer, a Carbondale resident, was ejected from his kayak while navigating the Crystal River. Teams searched the river for several days before calling off the search. The Carbondale Fire District assisted in the recovery on July 26.

Soccer club launches initiative, hires new coaches Sopris Sun Staff Report

The Carbondale Soccer Club board of directors has announced an initiative that it said will address league strategies that need improvement, according to a press release.

The board will also work with coaches, parent volunteers and player representatives to turn the club into one of the best soccer clubs anywhere.

Andrea Chacos is the new Carbondale Soccer Club board president.

“There is definitely a large sense of appreciation for the board members and coaches who have been building this club for the past 10plus years, however over that time, the number of players has multiplied … and the club is looking to adjust and evolve accordingly,” the new board said in a written statement.

The club has hired a new coaching director, Juan Quintero, who was raised in Carbondale and played both soccer and basketball growing up. “With the support and motivation from his family and coaches, Juan not only participated in multiple championship games and tournaments throughout the U.S., but he also was selected to play basketball in college at Colorado State University,” the press release said.

Chacos said Quintero stresses the monumental impact that playing sports has had on his life, and he is excited to introduce a new coaching curriculum, focused on age-appropriate development of skills as well as a structured transition into a competitive mindset. Quintero said he also hopes to bring a new level of training to the coaches, as many of them volunteer their time but have little-to-no training.

The number of Carbondale Soccer Club players is up, according to club officials, which is one reason the organization is revamping its operations. Preston also has been assigned the task to coordinate the development of the league infrastructure as well as to raise money through writing grants, donation proposals, and hosting fund-raisers.

Preston said her background in raising money comes from her service in the Peace Corps (Azerbaijan) in 2007-2009. There, she was required to write a number of grant

proposals as well as facilitate the development of programs similar to the Carbondale Soccer Club.

Preston played at a competitive level starting at the age of 10 and eventually moved on to play for the University of Colorado’s Gold Club team. She also coached for the Boulder County Force as a U10 head coach and U16 assistant coach. Many of her peers and the players she coached participated in collegiate sports, which she said is a driving force behind her motivation to contribute to the club.

“I believe that if there’s the right kind of motivation and support from coaches and parents alike, their athlete will rise up to become highly competitive stars, which will ultimately bring in college and professional scouts to observe Carbondale’s soccer players,” she said.

As for the club’s foundation, the press release said that many long-standing board members have committed endless hours of their time to bring the club this far, and have expressed their enthusiasm in seeing where it will go. “The newest members to the CSC are excited to work together with veteran board members in bringing new ideas, strategies and objectives to the club to build it into one that’s stronger and more competitive,” the press release said.

Ultimately, the soccer club hopes to accomplish a number of things: improve communications on all levels; clarify roles and responsibilities of parents, players, coaches and the board; provide professional training to the volunteer coaching staff; introduce a new coaching curriculum that will span over several seasons; offer more clinics, trainings and tournaments; collaborate with school athletics; address any holes in the current business strategy and patch those up.

“Ideally, the CSC would like to fuel the hearts of the soccer community of Carbondale and motivate the young athletes into working to be the best in the valley, if not the state of Colorado, and keep their eyes on the opportunity and possibility of playing sports in college, or even on Team USA,” the press release concluded.

Shelley said the district will start developing a new strategic plan in November, after the current marketing plan process is complete.

Continuing, Shelley said the district has asked JVA Consulting to incorporate the district’s new vision and mission statements into its marketing efforts, including: • Gathering data using demographic research, GIS marketing segmentation, surveys, focus groups and community meetings to identify user groups; • Facilitating community meetings with key stakeholders including the general public, library users, community leaders and elected officials to test the district’s “organizational values, mission and vision” to be sure they align with the district’s “customers;” • Analyzing processes and recommending improvements for existing media and marketing efforts, and; • Creating a marketing plan that easily communicates the district’s vision, mission and goals to the district’s communities.

The total cost of the project is not to exceed $25,000, Shelley said.

Since 2007, the Garfield County Public Library district – which operates libraries in Parachute, Rifle, Silt, New Castle, Glenwood Springs and Carbondale – has hired outside consultants to help plan its recently completed district-wide construction projects and create strategic plans. In 2007, at a cost of $53,945, the district’s board of directors hired Dubberty-Garcia to develop construction programs that ultimately resulted in new libraries or library expansion for each of the district’s towns, and to generate data and goals for a strategic plan, Shelley said.

In 2011, Shelley said she hired Suiter and Associates for $3,627 to facilitate three strategic planning sessions. “We were working on the three years that were dominated by construction activities and felt that doing the majority of the work in- house was appropriate at that time,” she said.

The current strategic plan for 2012-2014 was done mostly in-house, Shelley said.

NextGen Climate founder heading to AREDAY Aug. 10-13 in Aspen Sopris Sun Staff Report NextGen Climate founder Tom Steyer will be a featured speaker at the 11th annual AREDAY Summit in Aspen, which runs Aug. 10-13.

Steyer, a billionaire philanthropist, caused a political stir when he committed $100 million to ďŹ ght global warming, according to a press release. He will participate in the panel â&#x20AC;&#x153;Can a Political Agenda Be Achieved that Meets the Urgency of the Climate Change Crisis?â&#x20AC;? at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 12. Other panelists include League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski and former President of the National Wildlife Federation Larry Schweiger.

American Renewal Energy Day is presented by the American Renewable Energy Institute at the Hotel Jerome and will feature 125 scientists, educators, international business leaders, ďŹ nancial experts, student activists, renewable energy authorities, technology innovators and representatives of the environmental movement.

Other notable speakers include: Gen. (retired) Wesley Clark, David Blume (Blume Distillation), Morgan Williams (CEO of Biochar Solutions), Lawrence Bloom (chairman of the B.e. Energy advisory board) and Suzanne Hunt (Hunt Green LLC founder).

Rice University professor Douglas Brinkley will also talk with Steyer in an armchair conversation titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Politics, Climate Change

& Historyâ&#x20AC;? at 8:45 a.m. on Aug. 13. Brinkley, a frequent guest on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Imus in the Morningâ&#x20AC;? syndicated radio show, has written several books, including â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Reagan Diaries,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Wilderness Warriorâ&#x20AC;? (about Theodore Roosevelt), â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.â&#x20AC;?

As for Steyer, his name has been in the news since February, when he announced a $100 million campaign to ďŹ ght climate change. His campaign â&#x20AC;&#x201C; $50 million of his own, and $50 million to be raised by his PAC, NextGen Climate â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is meant to encourage action on global warming by helping to elect candidates who support such measures.

The New York Times said the campaign would put NextGen â&#x20AC;&#x153;among the largest outside groups in the country, similar in scale to the conservative political network overseen

by Charles and David Koch.â&#x20AC;? Steyer has said he plans to ďŹ nance full-ďŹ&#x201A;edged political campaigns in at least seven key states, aimed at Democratic victory in the 2014 midterms and the 2016 presidential race.

Steyer founded Farallon Capital Management, a high-net-worth equity management ďŹ rm, in 1986. He sold his stake in the ďŹ rm in late 2012 and no longer earns a share of its proďŹ ts.

Critics have been quick to point out Farallonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s investments in the coal industry. In an op-ed for Politico earlier this month, Steyer addressed his past, saying â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Farallon did make fossil fuel investments under my watch. But the more I learned about the

the RE-1 Roaring Fork School District is involved in a collaborative summer school initiative with local education foundation Summit 54 called Summer Advantage USA, according to a press release. The free, fiveweek Summer Advantage program includes breakfast and lunch, bus transportation, weekly speakers and field trips. Students spend the morning reading, writing and studying math, and in the afternoon participate in creative and learning-based enrichment projects.

On Fridays, scholars go on field trips to many of the areas non-profits. Each school site also completes a community service project.

Summer Advantage is privately funded in the Roaring Fork Valley by Summit 54, in cooperation with the RE-1 School District.

The program began in 2012 and served 410 kindergartens through third-grade students at Basalt, Sopris and Glenwood Springs elementary schools. In three years, the program has expanded to serve 725 students in and added a new site at Crystal River Elementary School.

Summit 54 has also been working with the Aspen Community Foundation’s Cradle to Career Initiative and is providing meals for the new Jump Start pre-school summer program through Summer Advantage’s summer service summer food grant.

Summer Advantage USA is a nationally acclaimed, summer school initiative aimed at preventing summer learning loss and improving academic success. National research claims that summer learning loss attributes to 66 percent of the achievement gap in America. Summer learning is designed to meet the needs of children. “It is through programs like Summer Advantage and foundations such as Summit 54 that we can help strengthen our children’s academic skills and engage them in expanded learning activities over the summer while supporting and benefitting children, families and communities,” said a Summer Advantage spokeswoman.

Inaugural Basalt Live means five days of fun

By S. Michael Jundt Five days of live entertainment was scheduled to begin on July 30 with Fifty50 entertaining the crowd at Lions Park with their steady mix of cover and original rock. The five days of Basalt Live concludes on a high note with the final matinee stage performance of “The Sound of Music.”

Coordinating Basalt Live is Zach Fisher of the Basalt Mountain Inn, in conjunction with the Basalt Downtown Business Association as well as several other businesses such as the restaurants Tempranillo, Heather’s, and The Brick Pony.

“The entire five days,” says Fisher, “will be performed rain or shine as we have a huge tent that will cover the whole of Lions Park.”

July 31 kicks off Jayne Gottlieb Productions presentation of “The Sound of Music” at 6:30. This children’s musical theater event will also take the stage

The show features a diverse group of talent, including some of the most wellregarded sculptors working today. “Ma-

terial Magic” showcases Western themes and influences made manifest in bronze, ceramic, wood and glass, by sculptors Veryl Goodnight, Gordon Gund, Neil Clifford, Amy Laugesen, Lloyd Schermer and Immi Storrs. Four of the six artists will attend the opening reception.

Mount Sopris: Hike it in one day or two?

(Editor’s note: This article is meant to be a general reference. Consult the White River National Forest district ranger headquarters in Carbondale, a hiking guidebook or experienced mountaineer before heading out).

By Sara H. Porter Special to The Sopris Sun There has been a long-standing discussion in Carbondale.

No, not that of the roundabout or the plastic bags at the grocery store. I am talking about the infamous Mount Sopris hike. Residents and visitors may have their preferences, but should you do this classic hike in one day or two?

To get to the Mount Sopris trailhead, drive south on Highway 133 and make a left on Prince Creek Road. Drive Prince Creek Road and follow the signs to Dinkle Lake (about seven miles or so). The parking lot is located on the left side of the road and the trailhead is directly across from the lot. The trail is fairly easy to navigate until above treeline, where it is mostly a pick-your-way-through-the-rocky-terrain until you reach the summit. The elevation gain on this mountain is over 4,000 feet. The distance and elevation qualify it as a strenuous hike.

If you want to tackle the approximately 12-mile round trip in one day, it is advised to start early morning. This helps to ensure you beat the daily afternoon thunderstorms. You will need a daypack with hiking essentials and sufficient time to spend on the trail. One day makes for a great hike but definitely a long one.

The first few miles meander through aspens until you arrive at Thomas Lakes. Then the trail begins to get steeper and rockier. The last few miles of the hike are in a variable scree field that leads to the summit. Often, many hike the ridge and think they are standing on the summit but don’t be fooled! The summit is actually quite a bit further and you must continue on the rocky talus down a saddle and back up the other side.

In August, folks start speculating whether all the snow will melt on the saddle before early autumn storms start to pile it back on. Sopris Sun file photo You will know you are on the east summit when you spot the man-made cove created in the rock. (Note: There is also a west summit that is the same height but you have to hike another saddle across to it). Now is the time to sit down, protect yourself from the wind, and take some time to enjoy the view of the valley!

Then the fun (cough-cough) begins. During the return hike, you will feel burning in the legs as you maneuver down the rock field. The footing is uneasy and the scramble will leave your quads shaky and sore for days to come. I am not saying

it’s not worth it, but it does give your body a little reality check. After clearing that section of the hike, you will feel relieved when you get to walk on a dirt trail for the last few miles. It is a long day but the accomplishment and scenery make it well worth the grind.
