Dead band delivers; Mountain Fair goes international

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer A pair of band-related incidents bookended Mountain Fair.

First, the Interrobang brass band from who-knows-where was passing through Carbondale and heard about Mountain Fair on Friday. They apparently drove over to Sopris Park and asked fair director Amy Kimberly if they could play (for free). “I told them ‘sure,’” Kimberly more or less said from the stage after the drum circle, and blessings from the Gaden Shartse monks, Lighting Heart and several local poets. And so, this traveling brass band played their bouncy traditional New Orleans jazz tunes until the regularly scheduled Moon Hooch came on at about 5 p.m.

Wrapping up Mountain Fair music on Sunday evening, a Brothers Keeper band member thanked an unnamed Eagle County sheriff’s deputy for not giving him a speeding ticket on Cottonwood Pass between Gypsum and Glenwood Springs as he hurried to Carbondale from the east.

“The sheriff’s on Cottonwood Pass?” a band member asked, somewhat incredulously (Editor’s note: Watch out on Cottonwood Pass).

The 44th annual Carbondale Mountain Fair featured the standard 15,000-20,000 partiers/fair goers, plus arts and crafts vendors and food booths, music for pretty much everyone from local ranchers to out of town hippies, plus fire dancers, female wood splitting contestants and more.

The brief shower sent some folks to the dry safety and easy access to beer at the Cantina, and others to the picnic pavilion. (Editor’s note for future fairs: the pavilion can get packed elbow-to-elbow pretty quick and folks get jostled or pushed around. So, get there early and position yourself next to one of the iron support beams to guard your back).

Few arrests at Mountain Fair

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling said this week that the 44th annual Carbondale Mountain Fair, July 24-26, was more peaceful than it has been in recent years, with very few arrests by either the Carbondale cops or by the supplementary officers brought in to help out with law enforcement at the fair.

“I thought we were going to get by with hardly anything,” Schilling told The Sopris Sun on Monday, explaining that as of the evening of Saturday, July 25, there had been none of the usual incidents involving belligerent, often intoxicated fair attendees getting into shoving matches or fist fights.

But the calm did not last throughout the weekend, Schilling continued, and overall there were five people arrested.

On Sunday at 6 p.m., the chief reported, a man tried to start a fight with another man at the corner of Weant and Euclid.

When police showed up, the man decided to get belligerent with the cops, and ended up being arrested and taken to the Garfield County Jail.

In addition, Schilling said, there were two drunk driving arrests and two arrests for domestic violence, but none of those were believed to be connected to

the fair itself.

A woman reported that her purse had been stolen from a place near the stage, Schilling said, though there were no suspects.

There was one noise complaint over the weekend, involving a Saturday night party at a business on Main Street.

When asked whether there was any reason he could think of that this fair was more peaceful than prior fairs, Schilling said there was none.

He noted, however, that some might claim that people were smoking pot more than they were drinking, in keeping with the claims of cannabis advocates that smoking yields a much less hostile or belligerent high than alcohol.

But, Schilling was quick to stress, that was not necessarily his own opinion.

He also reported that there was one alleged heroin overdose reported on Friday night, but again, it was not connected to the fair.

“It was a great fair,” Schilling concluded. “There were a lot of people there, but not a lot of issues that we had to deal with.”

He said he had no estimate for the number of people who visited the fair over the weekend.

problem I could dig up. A middle-age rancher’s wife was feeling a bit woozy on Saturday afternoon so she sat down on a hay bale near one of the booths. Next thing she knows, she’s face down on the grass in dangerous proximity to someone else’s vomit.

Wrapping up the weather end of this article, Saturday was clear and hot, and Sunday was cloudy and not-so-hot.

Shake Down Street, the Grateful Dead tribute band, was the much-anticipated musical event Friday night. They did not disappoint — or not as Dead shows in general usually didn’t disappoint very much — but they didn’t play “Bertha” or “USA Blues.” I never attended enough Dead shows to know whether Shake Down Street spends more, or less time tuning up before they start playing, but when I asked a woman next to me (who was kind of shuffling around) what she wanted them to open with, she said, “Anything … I just want them to start.” There was not an abundance of tie-dye T-shirts or Dead insignias. The ages and socio-economic mix was about like most other opening night crowds: 4-years-old to retired, and from outof-town vagabonds to the millionaire next door. Dance is what most came to do and that they did, from the opening number “Eyes of the World” to the closing one after an encore or two. I asked around for what the band closed with. Luke Nestler, who was working the Cantina during that time, made a good guess with an obscure Dead tune I’d never heard of, and have since forgotten.

Having the most fun were probably the two little boys and one little girl (each less than four feet in height) who circled through the towering crowd three times until a mom halted them before run number four.

I didn’t spend that much time at the fair this year, and to do a comprehensive job requires 10-20 hours, or a squad of motivated reporters, so here are a few snippets other folks told me: MOUNTAIN FAIR page 8

Red Hill group investigating “violent” vandalism incidents

By Trina Ortega Sopris Sun Correspondent The Red Hill Council, the non-profit group that manages trails and trail maintenance on Red Hill, is taking recent vandalism of trail work as a sign of protest.

The problems are occurring mainly on the lower half-mile stretch of Blue Ribbon Trail, which starts at the trailhead off County Road 107. In a number of spots, the trail switches back, and trail users have been cutting the corners, causing erosion and “trail braiding” (spur trails caused by trail users veering off the regular path — sometimes only by 20 feet — for shorter, more direct routes). The Red Hill Council has been trying to cover up the “shortcut” trails by placing larger woody material, dead logs, rocks and pine needles. Volunteers, including work crews from Backbone Media, have spent several days revegetating areas of the fragile desert soil. The council, furthermore, installed small signs with the words “Trail closed. Restoration area. Please stay on trail.”

In early July, however, the council discovered that someone removed the material.

Volunteers then returned to re-do the work

of revegetating the shortcuts. According to Davis Farrar, president of the council, the dismantling of trail work has occurred at least a half-dozen times in 2015.

“After the fifth time putting it back, you just want to be absurd and say, ‘Get the hint.

We’re going to keep putting this stuff back forever because you’re wasting our time, you’re wasting the time of volunteers.’ It’s really the proverbial finger at what we’re doing. And if you don’t like what we’re doing, contact us and tell us your opinion,” Farrar told The Sopris Sun. Farrar says it’s a “violent” act of vandalism because some of the woody material is large and would take more than one person to remove. “I say violently because some of the trees took three or four people to carry into place [during the trail work days]. I found one that was thrown down the steep hillside, that tumbled and slammed into a juniper tree and was upright,” he said. “It’s a form of protest, obviously. Are they protesting care of the environment? Who knows what they’re protesting. They’re protesting something that, in their mind, isn’t right, without any attempt to contact the Red Hill Council or to contact BLM.”

Since 1996 The Red Hill Council is a non-profit group that was formed in 1996 and operates under a Memoranda of Understanding with the Bureau of Land Management, the government agency that formally manages the 3,000 acres of public land just north of Carbondale.

Bureau of Land Management public affairs specialist David Boyd said the BLM relies on the Red Hill Council to help manage and maintain Red Hill, as well as get the word out about responsible trail use at Red Hill, and “they do a great job for us.” Boyd said he is aware of the recent challenges on Blue Ribbon.

“It is mostly from people short-cutting, wanting to do more ‘downhill riding’ vs. trail riding. Red Hill doesn’t lend itself to downhill type riding; that’s best done at ski areas and other places like that,” Boyd said, referring to mountain bike use of the trails.

BLM could cite a person for resource damage in this kind of case, according to Boyd. “It is a difficult thing to enforce, however. The work being done on the trails is to keep them sustainable. Shortcutting leads to significant trail damage.”

Although the council does not have any leads on who might be destroying the trail work, council member Chris Brandt reported that after the July 7 incident there were fresh bike tracks through the re-vegetated zone.

Brandt speculated the perpetrators might be mountain bikers who want to improve their descent times by cutting corners.

Both Brandt and Farrar are mountain bikers and acknowledge that the “message” may be from a small percentage of mountain bikers who are upset with the trail maintenance on Red Hill. Some riders say the council has gone too far in its trail work, claiming that technical challenges have been leveled out and the trails “sanitized.” One trail user (who wished to remain anonymous) said the council focuses too narrowly on erosion control and has little regard for safety.

High desert Because Red Hill is a high-desert environment, it contains lots of natural, rock challenges but it also is susceptible to erosion. As they currently stand, all three trails that branch off from the sole trailhead are intermediate (“more difficult”) and advanced RED HILL page 19

Garfield County commissioners vote 2-1 on new CR106 plan

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The deal to maintain a public pedestrian/biking/horse riding trail through Colorado Rocky Mountain School near Carbondale, four months in the making, appears to be done, following a decision by the Garfield County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) on Monday.

The vote was not unanimous, however, as Commissioner Tom Jankovsky continued to object to the plan for a trail on the historic County Road 106 right-of-way through the school campus. Jankovsky’s objections were overridden by the other two commissioners, John Martin and Mike Samson, in a 2-1 vote to approve the deal.

The deal is still contingent on further negotiations between Garfield County and the school, concerning a 1999 Conditional Use Permit (CUP) that lays out how the school can use the right-of-way. That CUP, incidentally, refers to the continued use of the historic right-of-way for pedestrian and other non-motorized traffic.

The plan, put forward by Martin following a recent hearing about the issue, is meant to eliminate through-traffic by automobiles on the north-south right-of-way.

Martin has said that the deal is in keeping with a 1979 decision, by the commissioners at the time, to close the road to motorized public traffic at the school’s request but leave it open to public use by bicyclists, pedestrians and equestrians.

The 1999 CUP was appended to the 1979 decision, to memorialize the school’s continued use of the right-of-way by cars, delivery vehicles and other conveyances.

Martin’s plan involves the erection of two fences at different points along the right-of-way through the campus, with specially designed gaps to permit bicycles and other non-motorized traffic through. It is the placement of those two fences that, according to county officials, will necessitate further negotiations to either rewrite or amend the CUP, because the fences change the school’s internal traffic management.

Under the current deal, cars driven by those having business on the campus would not be allowed through the fence lines, and would be forced to drive into and leave the campus by either the southern public entry point at County Road 108, or one of two gated entrances along the campus' northern border along Dolores Way. School officials, who have tried twice to get the county to vacate CR106 as it passes through campus, have indicated they are not entirely pleased with the arrangement.

Part of the school’s concern, said Headmaster Jeff Leahy, is the effect of the deal on the 1999 CUP. Among other things, Leahy said, the deal as approved forces traffic from the school to exit the campus and use Dolores Way and other routes to get from the northern end of the campus to the southern end.

Leahy said the school’s board of trustees needs to take a formal look at the deal as it now stands, and determine whether there is a way to rearrange the internal traffic routes on campus to avoid having internal school traffic forced off campus.

“We just need to look at how it all lays out,” Leahy said.

The deal came about as a result of negotiations between the school and some of its neighbors living in the county, who wanted public access to the right-of-way to be maintained and strengthened by the addition of signs and installation of

either paving or a soft-surface of some kind.

The commissioners, faced with an estimated cost of $200,000-plus for paving the trail, opted to leave the surface as it is for now.

A check with county staffers revealed that as of June the county had so far spent $11,175 in payments to Sopris Engineering of Carbondale for design and other work associated with the trail issue.

At the BOCC meeting on Monday, Commissioner John Martin expressed the hope that the county and the school can talk amiably about any amendments or additions to the CUP, and that it will not involve protracted legal work that would be costly and difficult for all concerned.

“We just want to negotiate in good faith and get something done,” Martin said at the meeting.

Temp weeders finish North Face job Sopris Sun Staff Report Colorado Job Temp Services recently finished a three-week job of puling weeds at the North Face Bike Park, a task that was recommended by the town’s insurance carrier, according to town manager Jay Harrington’s weekly memo to staff, the trustees and others. “The majority of the weeds [were] eradicated from the riding surface,” he wrote. In addition, the chair of the Bike/Pedestrian & Trails Commission, Darryl Fuller, continues to lead an effort every Thursday evening to direct a corps of volunteers in keeping the weeds at bay at the Bike Park.

In other notes from the memo: The town’s streets crew was busy the week of July 20-24 getting ready for the 44th annual Carbondale Mountain Fair.

The crew labored at cleaning out a drywell on Sopris Avenue, replacing concrete panels on the street as well as adjoining sidewalk sections; replacing water value-boxes on Barber Drive; and restoring drainage on Highway 133 south of the intersection with Village Road to prevent flooding.

The town’s contractor working on the Barber Drive street renovation project, Frontier Paving, laid down asphalt along the street last week, and was cleaning up Friday afternoon in preparation for opening the street up to traffic.

Town workers also removed a small, dead tree from Hendrick Park and trimmed up low-hanging tree limbs along Vito’s Way, weeded flower beds around Sopris Park and on Main Street, and pulled out a large patch of thistle from the area next to the Highway 133 “Welcome to Carbondale” sign.

The parks crew removed another fire pit from Stairway Park along the Crystal River and repaired a picnic table that had been vandalized. Harrington reported “the park is experiencing an increase in use.” In addition, the parks crew was busy helping get Sopris and Glassier parks ready for the fair.

Town staff plans to submit a $25,000 grant application to the Garfield County Federal Mineral Lease District’s mini-grant program to defray the costs of buying new playground equipment for Sopris Park, and to build a picnic shade/shelter over the community bread oven at Bonnie Fischer Park.

Another grant application, this one to the Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Inspire Initiative is to obtain a planning grant to help local governments and other organizations “to identify barriers, gaps and opportunities to implement a county- and youth-driven process encouraging residents, especially children, to get out, appreciate, enjoy and stay active on newly build trail connections and recreation facilities.” The facilities are, themselves, to be paid for with a hoped-for

$1 million GOCO “implementation grant,” according to LiveWell Garfield County, the agency working on the project.

Police Chief Gene Schilling and Lt. Chris Wurtsmith attended the Colorado Association of Police Chiefs conference in Denver last week, which involved presentations on “a number of subjects, including the Jessica Ridgeway case” as well as hearing from state legislators and studying up on newly passed laws.

Carbondale Police Department’s administrative assistants received an award from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s Department of Public Safety last week for their work in turning in error-free data submittal for the month of May; Ordinance Officer Gretchen Stock-Bell received a letter from Colorado Mountain College congratulating her on academic performance for the spring semester of the law enforcement academy there. Her grade point average, which was not revealed, reportedly earned her a place on the Dean’s Honors list.

In addition, CPD’s Sgt. Scott Wilhelm and Off. Randy Rodgers will be attending a Spanish language immersion course in Artesia, New Mexico, next month. The two received a scholarship from the Peace Officer Standards and Training Board, a section of the state Attorney General’s office, for participating in this intensive language course.

Cop Shop From July 16-23, Carbondale officers handled 160 calls for service. During this period, officers investigated the following cases of note: FRIDAY, July 17: At 51 minutes past midnight, officers encountered a man driving drunk at 4th and Main, and arrested him.

FRIDAY, July 17: At 3:12 p.m. police took a report of a burglary at an apartment on North 12th Street.

SATURDAY, July 18: At 23 minutes past midnight, officers stopped a vehicle for failing to obey a traffic control device. The driver, a juvenile, fled from the scene, but then stopped and was arrested, and later released to his mother.

SUNDAY, July 19: At 8:34 p.m. police were informed of a burglary at a home on Garfield Avenue, where $200 was reported stolen from the kitchen table.

SUNDAY, July 19: At 2:37 p.m. police were told of an incident where several locals had sent money via wire to buy a dog, but the dog never showed up. Police also were contacted on July 21 about a fraudulent e-mail requesting that money be transferred from company accounts. Both cases of alleged or attempted fraud are being investigated.

TUESDAY, July 21: At 3:32 p.m. officers assisted ambulance personnel with an intoxicated male who was reported to have violated a court’s protective order. The man was arrested, taken to a hospital and then to jail.

Unbelievable?

You might not believe this story about the Highway 133 roundabout but a Sopris Sun staffer swears he saw it with his own four eyes. This one pertains to the City Market parking lot. To set the scene, imagine you’re driving south on Highway 133 at a reasonable speed. Just after you pass through the roundabout heading south, you’ll come to two “pedestrian crossingâ€? signs and clearly marked crosswalks. The crossing leads into the City Market parking lot and is pretty wide. Wide enough, in fact, so that ďŹ ve or six Denver Bronco offensive linemen could stride from the roundabout and into the parking lot shoulder-to-shoulder. Or, wide enough so that an out-of-town visitor hooked a hard right in his blue SUV to exit the roundabout and access the City Market parking lot that way.

When the normal looking middle-aged driver and equally normal looking middle-age female passenger got out of the car and started walking to the City Market front door, the Sun staffer politely told her they’d just driven in via the pedestrian crossing, she replied, “Oh. We thought that was the entrance� and just kept on walking.

Developer presents for-proďŹ t senior housing project

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer A plan to build a 70-unit senior-citizens housing project on the north side of Carbondale was ofďŹ cially placed in the lap of the town’s board of trustees on Tuesday night, though a lengthy discussion of the topic focused mainly on how to get to the project, if it ever is built.

No actual land-use application has been ďŹ led for the project, and scant details were mentioned during the discussion at the Tuesday meeting.

The main spokespersons at the meeting about the project, proposed by a for-proďŹ t company called Sopris Lodge LLC, were Terry Claassen, one of three managers of the LLC, and local real estate agent Lynn Kirchner, who is the broker for the sellers and the buyers of the property where the senior housing complex would be built.

Claassen acknowledged on Wednesday, in a telephone conversation with The Sopris Sun, that he had previously been part of a group that won approval for a separate senior housing project, on a site along the Roaring Fork River in Glenwood Springs adjacent to the 27th Street bridge.

That project, Claassen said, was sold to a development partnership from Wisconsin, and is due to break ground soon.

The Sopris Lodge site, on the northern side of the Rio Grande Trail, is in an area now occupied by a storage-unit business and other buildings, on land owned by a group of mem-

bers of the Nieslanik ranching family.

Some Nieslaniks were in the audience at the trustees meeting Tuesday night, along with a few dozen of the town’s senior community, who presumably were there to provide support for the project, although most did not take part in the discussion.

Town ofďŹ cials have been working with Claassen and his partners since January, mainly on the access issue, which at one time involved a plan to run a driveway to the site from the junction of North 4th Street and the Rio Grande Trail, along the north side of the trail.

But negotiations with a group of landowners who own property on that side of the trail, a group that includes former Carbondale Trustee John Foulkrod, went nowhere, according to Claassen and town ofďŹ cials.

Town ofďŹ cials at one point offered to swap land with the Foulkrod group, trading a strip of ground the town owns next to the bluff that drops down to the river level, but the property owners were not interested.

The owner of the trail right of way, the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority, told the developers it could only give up a 10-footwide easement along the trail and still have sufďŹ cient width of the trail for its own needs, which would not be wide enough for what Claassen estimated should be a 50-foot-wide access drive to the project.

So now, Claassen told the trustees, the access plans are aimed at North 2nd Street where it meets the Rio Grande Trail. “We need the city’s help with 2nd Street,�

said Claassen at one point in the meeting, “because without 2nd Street access we have nothing right now.�

Using 2nd Street as the main route for getting to the project, however, would involve widening the street to 24 feet or more, possibly rebuilding the road base beneath the pavement and then repaving the street, and possibly rebuilding the water lines that run

under the street, according to town planner John Leybourne and public works director Larry Ballenger.

No estimates were given for the cost of such a project, although there was some back and forth between town ofďŹ cials and Claassen about who would pay those costs — the developers or the town.

Town Council om page 7 Claassen indicated that the development team is facing its own high-cost street project — building a driveway between the Rio Grande Trail/2nd Street intersection and the project site — and hoped the town would absorb the costs of upgrading 2nd Street.

But Town Manager Jay Harrington and Mayor Stacey Bernot both explained more than once that the town currently has no capital improvement budget equal to the task of paying for such a project.

In order to come up with that kind of money, which could be in the millions of dollars, the mayor said the town would need to apply for grants from the state of Colorado and GarďŹ eld County’s Federal Mineral Lease District, among other potential sources.

Bernot acknowledged that “2nd Street has been an issue for a long time,� and that the town might end up picking up the tab for rebuilding the street, but added that it would not look right for the town to “leap-frog� the street’s reconstruction over “other priorities�

that have been languishing for lack of funding.

But, Bernot also said, the town needs to know what the target group of possible residents would be for this project, as well.

Early in the discussion, Claassen had assured the trustees that the units would range from “very small units, affordable type units,� to larger, more expensive apartments at higher prices.

Bernot and others on the board indicated they would feel more open to working with the developers if they knew that the senior housing units would be offered to low-income residents as well as to wealthy ones. “If it’s going to be a large expense to the town,â€? the mayor said, “I don’t want to run the risk of looking like ‌ we’re serving what looks to be a very high-end group of folks.â€?

Other trustees expressed similar sentiments.

Trustee Katrina Byars called the need for good quality, affordable senior housing “an emergency, at the top of the list� of projects the town should pursue.

But, she added, any such housing must be open to “all of our senior who want to stay here,� not just the well-to-do.

Town staff recommended that they be authorized to hire engineers to give the town a better idea about the costs involved in rebuilding 2nd Street and working with RFTA on the crossing of the Rio Grande Trail — an engineering study that was estimated to cost approximately $5,000 to $10,000 “That’s about as far as we can go, other than saying about the concept that we are in support,� the mayor told Claassen.

Carbondale Mountain Fair was going on and on and on last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Every picture tells a story here, beginning with the little girl (top left then counter clockwise). An observer told The Sopris Sun the girl checked out the donuts at one food booth, made her selection, then headed to her dad without paying. Speaking of paying, dad apparently wasn’t paying that much attention, and didn’t notice his kid had just pilfered a snack. Rumor has it Carbondale’s statute of limitations on little girls grabbing donuts at Mountain Fair is less than a minute, so her family shouldn’t worry about prosecution. Meanwhile, at the drum circle, most everybody was happy to help establish the fair’s vibe, but not everybody. Shake Down Street attracted a crowd on Friday night, including this guy who may or may not be a Deadhead because he was seen dancing and doing what appeared to be a Screamin’ Jay Hawkins impersonation all weekend. The bottom two photos require some explanation. Kids of all ages were invited to get into rubber spheres then run around on the water in a portable pool. The kid on the right shows how it’s done. Susie Jimenez cooks it up for English In Action Sopris Sun Staff Report The Basalt-based English in Action presents “Bites from Around the World” with Food Network Star finalist Susie Jimenez from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Aug. 5 at the Grey Lady in Aspen (305 S. Mill St).

“Food and language bring people together,” said English In Action Executive Director Lara Beaulieu. “This event is a perfect way to celebrate the diversity of our community and the ways that we are all connected.”

The menu will feature a variety of Jimenez’s creations, which draw on international food traditions, while incorporating a Latin flair. The “bites” will include chicken empanadas with cilantro crema fresca (Latin America), curried fried vegetables on skewers with mint cilantro sauce (India), and grilled vegetable rolls with chimichurri sauce (Asia).

Jimenez will also speak about her passion for food and English In Action’s work. “My family migrated from Mexico to have a better life, moving from migrant camp to migrant camp to pick cherries and peaches and working in the canneries,” Jimenez said. I was lucky to have had the opportunity to go to school and they engraved in my mind how important it was to learn to speak, write and communicate in English in order to have more opportunities.”

Jimenez, a board member with English In Action, noted that the fact her parents

did not speak English has been a challenge in her family. “I want to help spread the idea that it’s not too late to learn. There is a way, and we need to help those that want to go for it.”

English In Action was founded 20 years ago to help adults learn English and to participate more fully in the community. The organization’s primary program is a oneon-one tutoring program using volunteers.

English In Action also offers workshops and small group tutoring sessions. No prior experience or language experience is necessary to volunteer. The next tutor training is on Aug. 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Basalt Regional Library. For more information, visit englishinaction.org.

To knit, or not to knit Dear Editor: So, here I find myself, teaching a knitting class for the Summer Advantage program at Crystal River Elementary School, knitting squares that will be made into blankets for orphan babies in South Africa.

What I did not know until I began was that I would have close to 100 students altogether, second and third graders, boys and girls.

Since the budget was small, I figured we would have to start our journey with chopsticks, thanks to the generosity of Zheng and Beijing Tokyo. A few local, good Samaritans answered the call for free yarn, so we were set.

Our journey began with finger knitting (why not?) just to get familiar with yarn and using our fine motor skills. It turned out to be a big hit, with boys and girls.

Whoa!

We actually managed to cast on stitches our first lesson, but trying to explain the process of the knit stitch to 25 students who cannot quite see what I am doing, unless it is one-on-one, was the challenge.

After a few more one-hour sessions, the third graders were away and knitting. The

second graders were getting there.

But here comes my question. An excited third grade boy came to tell me he had been knitting his square at home, but his mother told him to put it away, for BOYS do not knit. The same day, a teacher came up to me just as excited, telling me how the BOYS had been finger knitting on the bus taking them on a field trip. She thought it was so cool.

Men were the first knitters. It has been shown that knitting uses both sides of the brain, helps with reading (left to right), helps with counting, helps with relaxation, etc., etc.

So, boys, more power to you. Keep knitting!!

Botanical hacker strikes again Dear Editor: The phantom botanical hacker is at it again, perhaps to taunt me after my recent letter to the paper. On Aug. 22, apparently in broad daylight, but unseen by me, this defiant being not only clipped my hedge, but as usual, left the severed branches lying all over the sidewalk, thereby creating an obstacle path for pedestrians. This is clearly a violation of my property rights,

and has been reported to our local law enforcement agency. If anyone witnesses this disrespectful mischievous behavior in action, kindly notify me at 963-2798 and/or the Carbondale police at 963-2662.

Balancing wilderness and culture Dear Editor: Each summer in the Roaring Fork Valley, I find myself torn between whether to get out in our vast mountains or catch the never-ending supply of music and activities in town. Usually I run myself ragged trying to do both. Fortunately, this year there’s happy medium. It’s called Wildfest, and it’s the perfect blend of wildness and culture. Wilderness Workshop’s signature summer event takes place Aug. 1 on the grounds of one of Old Snowmass’s finest ranches — The Other Side Ranch dating back to the 1800s. Located up East Sopris Creek, the ranch includes an historic barn, open meadows with spectacular views of the Elk Mountains, and lots of furry friends. It is the perfect setting for live music, local food, workshops and fun for

the whole family.

The headline act is the neo-bluegrass band Head for the Hills (bring your dancing shoes!) and they’ll be joined by Aspen’s own Jes Grew plus two other bands. Local chef Hayden Dudley, formerly of Cloud 9 bistro, is providing food at a Locavore Café with locally sourced food from Crystal River Meats and Rock Bottom Ranch.

Coffee, teas, and local beer and spirits will be served all day. There will be workshops, panel discussions, a communal mural creation and a kid’s zone.

This is the place to celebrate and enjoy what makes our valley such an amazing place to live: groovy music and culture surrounded by some of the country’s most spectacular backcountry.

Folklorico students perform at dance gala in Chicago

By Tavia Teitler Sopris Sun Correspondent “I was psyched” were the words that dancer Lindsay Vega used to describe her reaction when she found out that she would be performing in Chicago. Vega is part of the advanced/performing group of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Folklorico, an after-school program under the direction of Francisco NevarezBurgeño, which teaches students traditional Mexican dance. The program has been in the Roaring Fork Valley for several years and has served hundreds of students. Towards the end of last month, 15 students ages 12 to 17 (and five chaperones) loaded their dance costumes into suitcases and boarded an airplane for Chicago, where the dancers explored the city and performed at the National Museum of Mexican Art. The performance came about as the result of a student exchange last school year.

Members of The Academy of Mexican Dance and Music (AMDM), an adult folklorico group based in Chicago, came to Carbondale in January and taught the folklorico students new dances. Nevarez-Burgeño later returned the favor, traveling to Chicago and helping AMDM learn some new dances as well. Throughout this exchange, the members of AMDM “Fell in love with [Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Folklorico],” said NevarezBurgeño. When the Chicago group learned they would be holding their inaugural gala at the National Museum of Mexican Art, they invited ASFB Folklorico to join them in an effort to, “promote Mexican culture in

Chicago,” as Nevarez-Burgeño put it.

Making this trip happen wasn’t exactly easy but Nevarez-Burgeño believed that this experience was very important for his students.

“I think one of the most important things is to take these kids out of the valley ... [so they can] see other cities, meet new people, make new friends ... and show people … how capable they are of doing this kind of art.” One of Nevarez-Burgeño’s hopes for his students during this trip was that they would start to, “make a network for themselves,” by forging new contacts and gaining new experiences.

New contacts One new contact the students formed on this trip was with a group of young mariachi musicians called the Chicago Mariachi Project, who provided the dancers with live music during their performance. The dancers first encountered this group when they stumbled upon the young musicians performing in Millennium Park while the dancers were touring Chicago. Nevarez-Burgeño was introduced to the director and learned that the mariachis would be closing their show with “Negra” (the song that the dancers would be performing to at the museum). When the familiar music came on, several of the students, with some encouragement from Nevarez-Burgeño, stood up in front of the crowd and started dancing. “We just went for it,” said dancer Andy Loya. “We were just tourists ... and then BOOM we started dancing,” Nevarez-Burgeño said.

The dancers also toured Chicago by train, checking out all parts of the city and paying a visit to Lake Michigan.

Nevarez-Burgeño was proud to report that, despite their marvelous experience, their time in the city made many of his students more appreciative of their home. “Two or three of my students approached me when we arrived in Denver and made the comment that it’s nice to visit big cities ... with all the rush and all the people and all the traffic but … it’s so nice to live where we live in this small valley where everybody’s mellow and calm and the weather is nice,” Nevarez-Burgeño remembered.

“My favorite part of the trip was the ex-

citement of my students to get on the plane and the excitement of seeing them all together,” Nevarez-Burgeño said, adding that the group is more than ready to take on another trip like this in the future. “Whoever invites us to wherever in the world, we will be there.”

aims to maintain the existing difďŹ culty grades — not let erosion get so out of control that it becomes unrideable yet not do so much trail work that it’s too tame.

Farrar is a founding member of the council and when he ďŹ rst began work on formally developing the Red Hill trails, there was only one way up — Blue Ribbon. He noted that when there was no trail maintenance at all for a few years, the trails eroded so badly that prominent rock features were more noticeable, until they completely loosened up and came out naturally. At a time when it wasn’t even conducting trail work, the Red Hill Council was blamed for “destroying my favorite rock challenge,â€? Farrar said.

Farrar says the goal is not to satisfy 100 percent of the people 100 percent of the time. “Our goal is to make Red Hill a positive experience for everyone who uses it, to care for the resource, all this while working with the Bureau of Land Management.�

In terms of safety, he is ďŹ rm in his stance that it is the mountain biker’s responsibility to ride at a safe speed and to follow trail rules. “Biker control is the issue; biker responsibility not the trail. If you’re on Highway 82, do you go 100 miles per hour? No. There’s a   cops. Are we going to speed limit and there’s have speed limits and cops on Red Hill?

Nope, not on my tenure. If the trails are crowded, slow down,� Farrar said.

Mostly, though, Farrar wants trail users to communicate with the council, which has monthly meetings that are open to the

(“most difďŹ cultâ€?), with only 5.6 miles of the entire 15-mile system being labeled “easiest.â€?

In order to access any of that beginner terrain, however, one must ďŹ rst tackle an intermediate or advanced trail. “I enjoy the challenge of riding up steep slopes with rocky, undulating terrain that really tests my limits. We all like a narrower, natural experience,â€? said Brandt, who joined the council four years ago to have a say in how the trails are maintained and to know when and why technical features disappear.

A landscape architect, Brandt also has a strong interest in water and erosion. He likes to build, maintain and create things with his hands, which is another reason he is passionate about his work with the council.

He furthermore suggests that if Three Gulch (the intermediate trail to the top of Red Hill) is too easy for a rider, then he or she should move on to the next harder trail, Blue Ribbon. Mushroom Rock, also rated “most difďŹ cult,â€? is a ďŹ nal option for the upper two-thirds to gain the summit. “We have two speciďŹ c trail options when you enter the system. When the intermediate trail is too easy for you, go to the next — Blue Ribbon. We’ve tried to preserve the technical features of Blue Ribbon because that’s the advanced option. But even it is not sustainable according to modern trail-building standards. It’s excessively steep and built on highly unstable soil. It’s a challenge to juggle,â€? Brandt said.
