BYOC at Mt. Fair, or buy one there

By Amy Kimberly “Reuse” is a key factor in our fight for environmental health. We have become such a disposable civilization, and that could be our downfall if we don’t make some changes in our behavior.

Luckily, there is a strong movement to put the “re” back in use. I see it especially at festivals, where promoters are making environmental choices. I have been to several this summer — Palisade Bluegrass and Roots, Telluride Bluegrass and the Ride Festival — and all three have made the switch to educating and investing in “reuse.”

Palisade and Telluride sell cups and offer $1 off for refills when you bring a cup. The Ride Fest actually gave you a cup with your ticket and every vendor charged $1 more for those who did not have cups.

I asked Janice Zink, operations manager for the Ride Fest, why they did this. She said, “We all have to do our part environmentally, but it also made sense because we would not have a field of corn cups to clean up at the end of the night and that means less waste to haul out.”

I can relate to that because most of what

we pick up at the end of the night at Mountain Fair — besides forgotten shoes — are corn cups. Sure we compost them, but the energy that goes to creating them, just to dispose of them, takes its toll on our earth.

Carbondale Mountain Fair is taking a big step towards the road to “reuse.”

The Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities (aka Carbondale Arts), with help from The Town of Carbondale’s “bag fund,” is investing in reusable cups and we hope our greater community will make the commitment to this future.

What this means is, very simply, bring your cup to the fair, or buy one when there. The fair will have $8 Kleen Kanteen cups for sale.

We’d love to give them away but Mountain Fair is free to get into and we are a nonprofit that uses proceeds from the fair for important community programs throughout the year. So, a cup investment is a small price to pay. In fact, the Kleen Kanteen cups, with the Mountain Fair artwork, could be the millennial Mountain Fair T-shirt collector’s item. Ultimately, our reason for doing this is to get rid of corn

cups all together. However, because we see this as a transition year, we will still have corn cups available, as will the vendors, for those that don’t want to bring or buy a cup. The red cups for mixed drinks will still be available. The washable cups do require a cadre of volunteers to continually collect and wash but it is worth the extra work for a healthier world.

The Kleen Kanteen cups will be $8. The $4 leftover on each cup helps offset costs of charging a dollar less on drinks for reuse. The rest will be reinvested back into our commitment to keep Carbondale events environmentally friendly.

I have 5Point Film and Palisade cups in my kitchen that I use daily. I hope all of you take the option to bring, or buy, a cup at Mountain Fair (and while you’re at it, bring a plate and utensils). More importantly, please use your cup all weekend long. Together we can make this shift, and help heal our mother Earth!

Millennials poised to step up, seize opportunity

Teenagers. In spite of our many labels, the bond between a generation of people is often vague and hard to define. Who are we, and what mark will we leave on the future?

Our legacy will include far more than our uncanny ability to take flattering pictures of ourselves with a cell phone. The current youth of America are equipped with a unique set of skills that come from being born at a critical point in history. We need only to realize our unfathomable potential. Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper agrees: “You are going out into life at the greatest time that a generation could come of age,” he said at a recent Aspen Ideas Festival youth event. Other speakers that day echoed his sentiment — the young people of America have the ability to be more aware, more connected and more vocal than ever before. The course of the future will depend on our responses to these opportunities.

Each year, the Aspen Ideas Festival hosts an incredible assortment of bold thinkers and doers from all over the world. This time around, the festival included the Young Adult Forum, which attracted young audience members (ages 14-18) from a diverse range of ethnicities and backgrounds. The speakers ranged from poet to politician, each offering a unique perspective on modern issues and their relationship to the youth of America.

Brexit, immigration, forced marriages in the Middle East: these are just a sample of the broad topics discussed. The energy of the room shifted depending on the words that filled the air. A rap song pleading for social justice created a swell of emotion while a discussion regarding Supreme Court proceedings prompted quiet consid-

eration. As we absorbed the thoughts of successful and passionate professionals, I pictured the students in the room like rubber bands, stretched to the fullest extent of their elasticity, prepared to catapult into an unpredictable future.

OPINION

Chaotic The world has always been chaotic. But now that news is available at our fingertips, we have the ability to monitor humanity’s disarray. Tragedy and devastation fill the headlines, and the view through the screen becomes disheartening. Yet this perspective is a vital tool in strengthening our world. An awareness of the events that drastically shape the daily lives of others is an important part of becoming a modern citizen — someone who cares deeply for the well being of a community that extends far beyond himself. Jose Antonio Vargas — a journalist, media publisher and undocumented immigrant who spoke at the forum — told the students: “When you’re a citizen, you show up, and not just for yourself.” This statement was met with loud applause. It’s a message that resonates with a group of people who have grown up thinking about immigration, LGBT rights and gender equality. American youth have had the opportunity to observe, and come to the conclusion that our society can no longer thrive in the midst of discrimination. Instead, it is time to take steps towards justice.

The problems are numerous and complex, but we must solve them. The solution begins with realizing that ours is still an unbalanced society that presents systemic disadvantages to people based on race and socioeconomic status, among other factors. Yet we are lucky enough to live in a time and place where we

are free to discuss injustices and speak out against them.

“I hope you realize how privileged you are to be alive at the time that you are alive,” said Vargas. Our generation’s unique perspective and position in history provide us with a cultural context much different than the one experienced by those who have come before us.

Vargas also spoke on the importance of voting, urging those who have the privilege to vote to take advantage of it. Many speakers at the forum, including Neal Katyal (a former acting solicitor general of the United States) and Kristen Soltis Anderson (public opinion researcher and political columnist) stressed voting as a vital means of contributing to our society. There are many additional ways to take action: volunteer for an organization that aligns with your views and goals; write to your senator and other elected officials; express your concerns and hopes verbally, orally and artistically. Keep your ideals at the forefront of your mind, and promote progress through your behavior.

I am hopeful that my generation will continue to expand the conversation on inclusivity — that instead of apathy, we will feel empathy and urgency regarding the struggles our world faces. I am hopeful that we will continue to demand what is right, for as long as we do not accept injustice, there is potential to grow and flourish. Our generation will be the ones who turn that potential into action.

John Bruna shares stories of his life as a drug addict in recovery, and more, in his first book “The Wisdom of a Meaningful Life.” The book includes introductory meditations filled with daily activities to help the reader explore mindfulness in his or her life.

Bruna will also talk about “The Wisdom of a Meaningful Life: The Essence of Mindfulness” at Explore Booksellers in Aspen at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 23.

Stein submits rezoning proposal for Colorado Avenue property

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Ron Stein, an endocrinologist living in California, is hoping to develop a three-quarter-acre parcel of land that abuts Highway 133 — between Colorado Avenue and Main Street — as a mixed-use project with rental apartments and commercial businesses.

To do that, he has applied to the town to rezone the parcel from its current PC (planned commercial) to MU (mixed use), in part because the new mixed-use zone in the Unified Development Code (UDC) allows for a blend of residential and commercial uses.

Stein, reached at his office in Burbank, Calif., said on Tuesday the conceptual site plan submitted to the town was designed by architect Raul Gawrys of Basalt.

The application documents refer to the proposal as an example of “an in-fill project which is strongly encouraged by the Comprehensive Plan.”

Town planning director Janet Buck, after confirming that the application has been accepted and is being scheduled for review, noted that the PCC zone was rendered “obsolete” by adoption of the UDC, and that new development proposals are being encouraged to seek rezoning from the PC category to the mixed-use zone.

Buck, in an e-mail to The Sopris Sun, said the UDC permits buildings up to 35-feet in height, and that the town’s comprehensive plan identifies the Stein parcel as being in the New Urban category of uses, as pointed out

by Stein’s applications. The PC zone does not permit residential development as a land use.

Stein told The Sopris Sun he has no plans to ask the town to vacate the stretch of Colorado Avenue that separates the proposed development site from the existing Sopris Shopping Center and a complex of storage

“I love it there [in Carbondale]” – Rob Stein units just east of the shopping center, both of which Stein also owns.

That shopping center has been home to a number of businesses that have come and gone over the years, including the old Circle Super chain grocery store that became City Market; a Yellow Front store, numerous restaurants, the town’s only printing and stationary shop, the Sounds Easy video store, and others. Current businesses include Ragged Mtn. Sports, Ming’s restaurant, LuLu’s Thrift Shop, Koketa Fashion, Doggone Clean, El Horizonte restaurant and Sopris Crossfit.

Stein tried once to have the street vacated, in order to facilitate a development plan that would have involved use of the street right-of-way, but the idea was rejected by the town.

The new development plan calls for construction of

four buildings, two of which would be for commercial uses, and two of which would contain a total of 18 onebedroom and two-bedroom apartments, according to diagrams contained within the application.

The commercial buildings would be adjacent to, and face the highway. One is to be a single story tall, and the other is to be two stories.

The apartment buildings, which would be three stories tall, would be in the interior of the property and accessed by a driveway off Colorado Avenue.

Parking would be along Colorado Avenue and in two carports divided by the driveway.

The carports would be situated along the eastern side of the property.

In addition, a pocket park would be created at the northeast corner of the Highway 133/Main Street intersection, adjacent to the existing highway roundabout.

According to town staff, the rezoning application might be subject to a public hearing before the planning and zoning commission in August, and a second hearing before the board of trustees in September.

Stein said “there is not a lot of demand for commercial space” in Carbondale right now, but that there is considerable demand for rental housing, circumstances which led directly to his ideas for the proposed development.

While the apartments would start out as rentals, Stein said, it is possible they might be converted to condominiums available for sale at a later date.

Town “boulderizesâ€? Sopris cottonwood Sopris Sun Staff Report Town employees last week placed boulders at the base of a large cottonwood tree at the corner of 7th Street and Euclid Avenue, next to the Benjamin H. Reed memorial gazebo in Sopris Park, to prevent people from parking their vehicles on the ground covering the roots of the tree, according to Town Manager Jay Harrington’s July 15 memo to trustees and other recipients. Also planned is a project to wrap cables around the tree’s twin stems, to prevent further splitting of the stems and preserve the health of the tree as long as possible, according to town ofďŹ cials. In addition, town workers have begun preparations for a new sidewalk along Weant Boulevard and repaired a railing around the Carbondale Ditch diversion next to the bathrooms at the Historical Society ofďŹ ce.

The engineering consultants SGM have released a preliminary plan for a project along 3rd Street, which is to be shared with stakeholders and other interested parties to gather public input about the plans.

The town’s irrigation crew has been working on an old irrigation pump along Highway 133, and is replacing worn valves on the Hendrick open space irrigation system, which originally were installed some 25 years ago, the memo reported.

Parks department employees have been trimming chokecherry bushes growing along sidewalks, so that pedestrians can walk under them rather than around them, and continues to perform weeding and other maintenance tasks on landscaped areas around town.

Registration deadlines are approaching for several summer programs, including the All Star Sports Camps, the Volleyball Skills Camp, the Garden Boot Camp, Friday ďŹ eld trips and session three of the tennis and skateboarding lessons at the

North Face Bike Park property, the memo reported.

Session four of the Red Cross swimming lessons at the John M. Fleet pool are to begin on July 25, according to the memo, with space still available for kids aged six years and older.

A child/youth “mini-triathlon� has been scheduled for Friday, July 22 at 10 a.m., according to the memo.

Usage data for the pool indicated there were 3,236 users between May 28 and July 15, an increase of 263 users from the numbers collected for the same time period in 2015.

For the week of July 9-15, the memo reported, 482 users were counted, compared to 307 users during the same week last year.

At Gateway RV Park, the number of available slots has risen due to the addition of an overow site. Booking for the week of July 9-15 came to 114, for an occupancy rate of 81 percent, and the bookings for the week of July 16-23 stood at 43 sites as of July 15. According to the memo, the RV Park usage broke down to reect 71 percent of the sites for tent camping (individual sites), and 14 percent for group sites. Usage was at 80 percent for RV sites with water and electricity only (restricted to 25-foot campers); 85 percent for RV sites with full hookup (40-45-foot trailers); and 97 percent for RV full-hookup sites for campers measuring 34 feet at most.

Interviews, background checks and testing continues for two open police ofďŹ cer positions (a conditional job offer was made to applicant Josh Sanders) and for an administrative assistant position in Town Hall. A conditional offer has been made to applicant Aline Mullett, who accepted, and depending on a background check the town expects her to start work before Mountain Fair begins on July 29.

From July 7-14, Carbondale ofďŹ cers handled 236 calls for service. During that period, ofďŹ cers investigated the following cases of note: FRIDAY, July 8: At 9:57 p.m. Carbondale ofďŹ cers were sent to a reported disturbance at a home on Colorado Avenue. Upon arrival, the police determined that the woman involved allegedly was trespassing, and she was arrested on charges of second-degree trespassing and obstruction of government operations, both misdemeanors.

SATURDAY, July 9: At 7:55 a.m. police were called to Latigo Loop regarding barking dogs.

One of the ofďŹ cers had dealt with the same dogs previously, and did so again.

SUNDAY, July 10: At 2:39 a.m. an ofďŹ cer stopped a vehicle at Highways 82 and 133 for not staying in a single lane and for not using a turn signal. After investigating, the driver was arrested and charged with driving under the inuence of alcohol or drugs and other charges.

MONDAY, July 11: At 8:37 p.m. police were told of a man cursing at people and causing a disturbance on Main Street. When contacted, the man allegedly walked into trafďŹ c and then resisted arrest and assaulted the ofďŹ cers involved, who then removed him from the middle of the intersection at North 7th and Main streets and arrested him.

WEDNESDAY: July 13: At 1:03 p.m. and again at 5:21 p.m., police covered minor accidents along Main Street, one at about 684 Main and the second at 351 Main St.

Jaywalker Lodge treatment center could not have asked for a better morning to stage its inaugural “Everything is Possible” 5K run on July 16. Skies were blue and temperatures were in the low 60s when runners set out from Jaywalker’s main house at 811 Main Ct. The 52-runner field included Jaywalker clients, alumni, friends and rel-

atives, serious runners, at least one pregnant woman, and a woman pushing a sports-stroller with kid inside and a chocolate Lab in tow. The race-course headed east from 811 Main Court, the north to the Rio Grande Trail, south on Snowmass Drive, up White Hill (aka “Heart Break Hill”) to the church, then back to Sopris Avenue

and Highway 133. Jaywalker Lodge is a community of recovering people – staff, volunteers and clients -- who are all rooted in the 12 Steps, according to its website (jaywalkerlodge.com). The term Jaywalker comes from page 37 of the book “Alcoholics Anonymous,” in a story known as the “Jaywalker Parable.”

This just in CCAH said it received more than 30 proposals for its 2017 R2 Gallery schedule and can only accommodate 12. A letter that went out to applicants said “CCAH strives to showcase a balance of exhibitions that reflect the various aspects of the Roaring Fork community and beyond: a mix of emerging and established artists, solo and group shows, opportunities for educational experiences, and new ideas and techniques perhaps not previously seen in our gallery.”

In other words, better luck next year. Stay tuned for the actual 2017 lineup.

Rio Grande Trail re-opens The Rio Grande Trail between the Catherine Store Bridge east of Carbondale and Rock Bottom Ranch in El Jebel reopened as of July 20, according to a RFTA press release. Colorado Parks & Wildlife

(CPW) personnel have been monitoring the area since late June, when a pair of mountain lion kittens were seen along the trail, and they determined the kittens’ mother was still in the area. RFTA, which

manages the trail, closed it in late June upon recommendation of CPW. RFTA said CPW has not seen any mountain lion activity since July 13. The Rio Grande Trail closure came a short time after a

Carbondale Mountain Fair closing in fast July 29-31 Sopris Sun Staff Report The 45th Carbondale Mountain Fair, taking place July 29-31 at Sopris Park, is just around the corner. The fair began in 1972 with 20 booths showcasing local artists and artisans. Today, the Carbondale Mountain Fair draws over 145 vendors who bring their unique and diverse homemade wares to town each summer.

This year’s Mountain Fair is dedicated to the late Ro Mead, a long-time CCAH member, former director, and well-known potter.

In addition to vendors, Mountain Fair features nearly non-stop entertainment, with live music on the gazebo stage, various forms of performing arts, and the family-oriented Oasis that provides creative experiences for children.

There’s also great food, friendly competitions that run the gamut from pie baking to wood splitting, and an amazing spirit. “That spirit is best evidenced by the over 300 volunteers who come together to run the fair,” said Mountain

The 45th annual Carbondale Mountain Fair is shaping up much like the previous 44. This year’s theme, CommUNITY, highlights what this 45-year- old tradition is all about — bringing our diverse community together.

The Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities, and its Mountain Fair team, continue on with community favorite traditions like the wood splitting and pie baking contests, maintaining an advertising-free environment, striving for a zero-waste fair, and hosting vendors whose work is handcrafted and handmade. At the same time, Mountain Fair continues to weave in new elements from our growing diversity of community members.

“Keep your eyes peeled for poets in the park as our growing resident poets will be in action around the fair,” Colley said. In the past year, CCAH’s Launchpad has nurtured an aerial-enthusiast crowd, which will be performing to the left of the gazebo stage under the instruction of Sopris Soarers.

The music A tradition that is not to missed are the world-class music acts that Mountain Fair brings to the gazebo

stage. The Western Slope’s own six-piece marimba band, Zononoka, will bring the upbeat dance friendly tunes from Africa and beyond. Roaring Fork Valley duo Pearl and Wood will bring their “old grassy” sounds to Sopris Park.

Of special note is the ensemble Jarabe Mexicano. With a deep commitment to honoring the past while embracing the future, Jarabe Mexicano’s bilingual renditions of classic rancheras, huapangos, sones and boleros fill their listeners with romantic nostalgia, while their spirited arrangements of cumbia, reggae, and rock hits bring people from all backgrounds to their feet. Jarabe Mexicano will also hold a free youth workshop in the Oasis on Sunday morning.

The entertainment at the fair concludes with the Knoxville sensation Black Lillies, who have won wide acclaim for its country tinged, western hinged Americana music. They have played the Grand Ol’ Opry, Bonaroo Music Festival, Pickathon, and the Pagosa Folk & Bluegrass Festival. “Keep your eye on this band. They will bring this festival home in foot-stomping style,” Colley said.

Monks and polo do mix

On Tuesday evenings at the Aspen Valley Polo Club south of Catherine Store, they play the game of arena polo that is quite a bit different from polo played on a grass field. This last Tuesday evening, a group of Tibetan monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery in southern India were there to give blessings and meet the polo players.

Lexie Potamkin, who with her husband Robert hosts a different group of monks from the same monastery every year, drove them to the club in her hand-painted van. Potamkin said that some of the polo players meditate daily, as it helps to focus their mind. A few of the monks couldn’t help themselves when they saw the kids playing soccer on the grass field and decided to join them.

Trustees meet with GarCo commissioners July 26 Returning to Tuesdays

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Carbondale’s Board of Trustees (BOT) will hold their regular annual joint meeting with the Garfield County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) on July 26, the first meeting of 2016 when the BOT will return to its historic schedule of holding regular meetings every second and fourth Tuesday evening of the month.

The BOT switched its meetings to Wednesday nights earlier this year, following a request by former Mayor Stacey Bernot on

Nov. 10, 2015 that won agreement from her fellow trustees after some discussion.

The BOT decided last month to move the regular meetings back to Tuesdays.

The trustees and the commissioners have been meeting jointly for years to discuss issues affecting the town and the county.

Town Manager Jay Harrington on Monday called the July 26 joint meeting “a work in progress” when asked what would be on the agenda that night.

He explained that, at that point, only two topics are likely to be discussed.

One is the county-wide exploration of whether “broadband” Internet access can be arranged for home owners and businesses, as

• An update from the town’s energy-efficiency consultants and partners, Clean Energy Economy for the Region (CLEER) and Garfield Clean Energy (GCE); • Consideration of a Development Improvements Agreement with the developers of a housing project on Cooper Place; • A request for funding from Roaring Fork High School, to help pay for a schoolbased medical clinician. The school and the trustees had agreed at an earlier meeting that the town could offer financial assistance from its marijuana-licensing fund.

Again, Harrington noted that other items may be added to the trustees’ agenda before it is finalized next week.

The other discussion topic, Harrington predicted, is likely to be the question of creating more “affordable housing” here and in other parts of the county, as a way of mitigating against the rising cost of housing in the region for regular working people.

Following the joint meeting with the BOCC, the trustees will turn to their regular meeting agenda, which Harrington said that as of this week had only four items:

This mid-elevation moderate hike is six miles long, and: 4-wheel drive vehicles are necessary; dogs are not allowed; the hike is appropriate for those 12 years and older who are strong hikers (minors must be accompanied by a parent); bring appropriate dayhike equipment including water, snacks and lunch; participants should carry their own personal first aid kit. Competitions begin at Garfield County Fair July 30 a big day

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer As Carbondale prepares for the 45th annual Mountain Fair at the end of this month, another annual celebration, the 78th Garfield County Fair at the fairgrounds in Rifle, is well underway, at least in terms of traditional 4-H competitions and exhibitions that help make up the backbone of the event.

Rifle is located 25 miles west of Glenwood Springs, along the I-70 corridor, at the Colorado Highway 13 interchange.

The main County Fair schedule, of course, does not get going until Aug. 1 and runs until Aug. 6, and will include two rodeos, a demolition derby, a monster truck exhibition and a live concert at the outdoor arena on Aug. 5, featuring country music stars Josh Turner and Chris Janson.

Things were kicked off last weekend, on July16-17, when competitors in the 4-H “shooting sports” category (involving air rifles and pistols, archery, skeet and other types of shooting skills) got a jump on the

According to Karla Farrand, the county’s Colorado State University extension agent who oversees the 4-H program, about 100 young competitors took part in the early shooting-sports competition at the fairgrounds.

This coming weekend, July 23-24, about 30 young equestrians will participate in the annual horse show, also at the fairgrounds, which are located at 1001 Railroad Ave., about halfway through Rifle heading north from I-70.

And on July 30, some 225 exhibits will be judged in the Open Class categories, as discriminating judges pick and choose winners in traditional entries as cake, pie and cookie baking; photography and other visual arts; candy making; jelly, vegetables and meat canning; and a variety of crafts, including quilting and crocheting, as well as the more modern categories such as robotics and rocketry.

In addition, Farrand said, there are to be “interview judging” sessions, in which the entrants are asked questions about their preparation for entry in the fair, record keeping and other details, as well as general questions about life and “the story of their year.”

Also on July 30, she said, will be judging of livestock in the Premier Exhibitor class, which she said typically draws from onethird to one-half of the entrants and involves a written test as well as interviews by the judges.

Remarking that entries in the Open Class, and other sections of the fair, have been rising in recent years, Farrand said that while there were only three cake-baking entries two years ago, this year there are 17.

Farrand said that, overall, the 4-H competitions for the year will feature exhibitions by some 275 entrants in 19 clubs scattered throughout the county, including the Black Sheep and Mt. Sopris clubs centered in Carbondale, and the Pan & Fork club out of Basalt.

A key activity for fair entrants is the Aug. 6 livestock auction, at which all species of livestock will be presented for sale to sponsors and other buyers.

The auction, Farrand said, starts at 1 p.m. in the auction barn, preceded by a “buyers’ barbecue” for those who have signed up to purchase cattle, swine, sheep, fowl or other entries.

Those interested in buying at the auction can sign up on Aug. 5 at the indoor arena, and must be signed up before the start of the

auction in order to have a spot for bidding on grand champion beef.

The sale ends at 6 p.m. on Aug. 6, and signals the end of this year’s Garfield County Fair.

Farrand said the traditional emphasis on livestock — raising and selling — continues to be the bedrock activity at each fair, although she commented that there has been increasing interest in such higher-technology events as robotics and rocketry.

Also on the rise, she said, are interest in such activities as quilting, photography and textile painting.

“Quilting has seen a huge increase,” she said, explaining that there are 90 entries expected in the quilting competition and show this year. Judging in the quilting will take place on Monday, Aug. 1.

“Everything’s been going up,” she said of the growing numbers of participants, “which is kind of cool.”

Farrand said she has been involved in Garfield County’s 4-H activities for several years, first as a volunteer and now as the county’s extension agent, and that she has been active in 4-H from her days as a youngster in Oklahoma.

“4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America) are huge in Oklahoma,” she said proudly.

He said he is likely to some day redevelop the Sopris Shopping Center, although there are no plans for that at this time.

Stein noted that he comes to Carbondale several times a year, stating, “I love it there,” and adding that he is hoping to attend the hearings about his development proposal.

The Town of Carbondale Parks & Recreation Commission has approved a recommendation by CIRSA, the Town safety insurance inspector, that the tree slide located in Sopris Park near the swimming pool be removed due to safety and aesthetic concerns.

The tree slide play structure is approximately 10 years old and is in need of repairs and replacement parts that are no longer available from the manufacturer.

The Parks & Recreation Commission will be discussing recommendations for replacement of this play structure at their next meeting to be held Wednesday, August 10th, at 7:00 pm, at the Sopris Park Picnic Shelter.

Local neighborhood residents and Carbondale citizens are welcome to attend and weigh in on the discussions.

No more Spaulding Dear Editor: This past spring my 8-year-old granddaughter was having a discussion with several friends at school and evidently the children called a candidate a bad name.

Their teacher pulled them aside for a quiet talk about how we carry on a civil conversation. She pointed out that everyone has a right to an opinion and everyone has a right to respect. Respect comes first and calling names of other children or candidates or anyone does nothing but make people feel bad and create an ambiance of general disrespect.

We are living in a time of so much violence around the world, and we all have a responsibility to at least use civil language so that we do not cause more violence with words.

I am distressed that The Sopris Sun chose to print a letter from Audrey Jane Spaulding with a great deal of accusations and innuendo regarding a candidate for president. Her letter was name calling and included no facts with backing, and possibly outright lies. I would suggest that if people write letters regarding candidate and political issues that their letters be fact checked and not be published if they offer no facts for discussion. We all need to be informed not misinformed.

Here’s to Bike and Build Dear Editor: On July 9-11, we were among several households in River Valley Ranch that hosted 31 Bike and Build members.

These young people are riding their bikes across the country and stopping along the way to help build affordable homes. This is the ninth summer a group has stopped here in Carbondale,

to work with our local Habitat for Humanity and local families.

I would like you to know what a gift this turned out to be for the host families, some of whom had participated in the past and some brand new to the concept, like us. These young men and women were a pure delight and so inspiring, especially with all the bad things going on in the world and in our own country.

Our “boys” were Jacob, a senior at Amherst, and Amir, a junior at University of North Carolina. They were both the absolute best house guests we have ever entertained. They arrived on a Saturday afternoon after biking over Independence Pass and the first thing they asked after introductions were if we had any chores for them to do!

What an interesting group and experience! To our surprise, many of the participants were young women, clearly out numbering the men. Among the further information we learned that this was the first time they had slept in a bed since Mississippi! We wished that they had been able to spend at least another day here and were told by many that this was their favorite stop. They also said that this was the best organized Bike and Build stop that they had participated in. Kudos to Scott Gilbert and Jim Noyes for that. You too Laurie!

They spent two full days helping build homes in Carbondale and Silt. We were able to spend one evening with them at a picnic at the Ranch House and met many of the participants. They also had a little break enjoying the pool and hot tub. Early, early the next morning they departed for their 89-mile ride in the blistering sun to Meeker.

Our group started in Charleston, South Carolina and will end up at Santa Cruz, California, covering over 4,300 miles!
