Have you ever stopped to consider what happens when you call 911 for a medical emergency in the Carbondale Fire District?

Most people probably assume that a fully staffed team of emergency medical professionals are standing by, ready to rush to their aid. This is true, for the most part.

Why do I say “for the most part”?

Remember, we started out as a “volunteer” fire department. Though our department has evolved into a blend of volunteers and paid staff, we continue to rely upon volunteers (both firefighter and medical persons) to provide the level of service that you, our citizens, have come to expect.

Our little department, headquartered in Carbondale, covers an area that is 320 square miles! That’s over twice the size of Denver and one and a half times the size of the city of Chicago! We service parts of three counties, and some of the most mountainous terrain in North America!

When a medical emergency call goes out we send a highly trained team of emergency medical technicians (EMTs). These dedicated

professionals are EMTs and EMT-Paramedics. And there is a difference. EMTs are capable of performing basic life support (BLS) such as basic airway management, CPR and use of AEDs. EMT-Paramedics are highly trained and certified to conduct advanced Life support (ALS). The difference is critical to saving lives. Advanced Life Support includes all BLS functions in addition to advanced airway treatments such as intubation and CPAP, along with delivery of IV access for fluid resuscitation, IV meds, and cardiac monitoring and interpretation. The training, internship, and course of study required to advance from EMT to paramedic is huge.

Life and death The ability to provide you with a fullytrained paramedic on our squad is literally the difference between life and death. When a heart attack or stroke patient is en route to the hospital, our paramedics are in constant communication with the emergency department.

Emergency-room doctors and nurses are asking questions about highly detailed medical symptoms and cardiac values. In turn, they are

guiding our paramedics in what medications to deliver, and what actions to take in order to properly care for the patient prior to arrival.

This saves time and saves lives.

Our goal at Carbondale Fire is to staff two complete ambulance calls at any one time.

The minimum staffing requirement is three people per ambulance, which includes one paramedic. Now here’s the problem. If one crew is called out to Marble, the minimum amount of time that crew is out of service is at least three hours. We simply don’t have enough paramedics to respond to a second call requiring advanced life support.

Let’s face it. We are an aging population, even here in Carbondale. Consider the fact that we have a rare combination of young and active folks doing backcountry skiing, kayaking and mountain climbing, along with retired and elderly living in nursing facilities. When that 911 call goes out we don’t have the luxury of saying “We’ll get back to ya!” We’ve got a big job to do and we need your support.

Carbondale on its way to Creative District certification

By Amy Kimberly Carbondale is a passionate town because people care. That is a healthy place to be.

Whether it is a debate over parking or the Surls sculpture at the roundabout, we are awesome at getting riled up after the fact.

The Carbondale Creative Plan sets in motion an avenue for all of us passionate people to be proactive in a vision.

“How do we retain our heritage while embracing the 21st century?”

“How do we preserve our messy vitality while engaging and strengthening business and opportunity?”

“What image or imagery do we think represents Carbondale?”

“What kind of business do we want to

attract here?”

“How do we grow and still retain the things we love?”

Probably most important: “How do we make this a great place to live without losing it to others because we created such a great town?”

That last question is a hard one to answer, but the rest are part of the Creative Plan for Carbondale. As this plan progresses, opportunity arrives. In June, Carbondale was accepted into the state Creative District program. This program is part of Colorado Creative Industries and financed by the Boettcher Foundation. Colorado Creative Industries is also part of the state Office of Economic Development and International Trade and this program

helps communities strengthen their economy and identity.

So how does it help us?

It gives Carbondale up to $25,000 in cash over the next three years, as well as thousands of dollars in tools and consulting to help us achieve our goals and reach Creative District certification. It brings focus and support to our entrepreneurs and artists through promotion from the state and it gives us a platform to create a vision that can help guide us in the years to come.

Library board did right Dear Editor: Our library board has done well to use a consulting firm to examine future needs. We live in a digital age where more and more documents, books and the like are digital rather than print. We need to look to the future, not relive the past if our libraries are to truly serve our communities.

Town trustees dip toes into water tap issues John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent The town may find itself in dire financial straits if a sudden need arises to make major repairs to, or replace one or more components of its municipal water system, according to a discussion among the town’s trustees at a work-session meeting on July 15.

The town’s current schedule of “tap fees,” or fees charged to residents and businesses for hooking up to the town’s water system, may not be up to the task of covering the costs of such repairs and replacements, or the prospect that as Carbondale grows that water system must be expanded to meet the needs of the new growth, the trustees learned at the meeting.

And, according to a citizen who addressed the trustees, the tap-fee schedule is plagued by inconsistencies that make it difficult, or even undesirable for people living outside the town limits to hook up to the system even if they are able to, under a moratorium on out-of-town water taps that dates back to 1993.

Tap fees are based on an EQR, or “equivalent residential unit” equation that gauges the volume of treated municipal water needed to serve an average residential home and assesses fees based on that usage level.

The fees can amount to thousands of dollars, depending on the specific situation of the home under consideration, and the money collected is intended to cover the costs of replacing or repairing the town’s water-supply and water-treatment systems.

Currently, as explained by town utilities director Mark O’Meara, the town has three sources of water.

Nettle Creek, which flows from the slopes of Mount Sopris, is about nine miles from town, which presents a special array of problems in terms of treating and delivering the water to users.

In addition, the town gets water from a well on the Crystal River, and from wells on the Roaring Fork River.

Water from each of these three sources is processed through its own, dedicated water treatment plant.

All told, the system represents a public investment of millions of dollars and the potential for further millions of dollars in upgrades, repairs and replacement.

Stacey Bernot Carbondale Mayor complicated by the use of treated water for irrigation in different parts of town and in some outlying neighborhoods, such as Satank, a neighborhood outside of the town’s boundaries but which has established agreements for its residents to tap into the town’s water supply.

Nancy Smith, a former town trustee and Satank resident, informed the trustees at this week’s meeting that there are inconsistencies in how the town charges the fees.

For instance, she said, one of her neighbors is working on building an “accessory dwelling unit,” basically an apartment, on part of her property that historically has been used as a garden and lawn irrigated by water from the town’s water system.

While the ADU will use town water, Smith explained that it also represents a reduction of the amount of water

used for the garden, so the fee assessed by Town Hall should be somehow calibrated to reflect the diminished use.

“I’m not arguing that the tap fees need to be reduced,” Smith added. “Maybe they need to go up,” in order to provide the funding needed for future water-system improvements.

But, she continued, the entire tap-fee schedule needs to be rationalized to conform to actual, current patterns of use by residents.

Mayor Stacey Bernot conceded Smith’s point, agreeing that certain aspects of the town’s water-tap fee schedule, which has been in place for more than a decade, are “obsolete” and need to be updated.

Town Manager Jay Harrington remarked that, in fact, situations such as the one in Satank have led to a reduction in tap fees in certain circumstances.

He agreed, however, that the entire system of fees and assessments needs to be examined and, probably, modified to better reflect current water use patterns as well as accumulating enough money to meet future capital needs.

Bernot, in response, predicted “tap fees are not going to be reduced,” since the costs of system upgrades are constantly rising, “but the calculations (how the fees are assessed) can be changed quite a bit.”

Thanking Smith for her input, Bernot concluded, “We’re obviously not going to solve (all these questions and concerns) tonight. It’s an ongoing process.”

Harrington noted that the town is starting to work on a study of the matter, which he said may be completed next year and which will contain recommendations for ways to modify the tap-fee schedules, and perhaps the schedule of fees the town charges to water users, in order to provide adequate funding for ongoing operation of the water system as well as for repairs and replacement of the facilities.

Crew breaks ground on Carbondale bike park With switchbacks, jump track, jumps and more

By Trina Ortega Sopris Sun Correspondent When it comes to cycling, there’s lots to love about Carbondale: more than 75 miles of dirt trails located less than 10 miles from downtown, Full Moon Cruiser rides, Bonedale Bike Week, the Rocky Mountain Omnium, Aloha Mountain Cyclery ShakaCross cyclocross series and Bonedale Bike Project, and the Porcupine Loop annual mountain bike race. Carbondale is additionally recognized as a Bronze-level “Bicycle Friendly Community” by the National League of American Cyclists and will apply for Silver status before the end of summer.

And in a little more than a month, a two-acre professionally designed and built bike park on the south end of town will be the next big amenity adding to the town’s pedal-powered revolution.

The $95,000 park is located at the North Face Park, which also houses the Darien tennis/pickleball courts, the skateboard park, a junior size soccer field and a lighted baseball/softball field.

DirtSculpt, a Pennsylvania-based company that builds dirt jumps and tracks for professional-level cycling competitions, is constructing the park that will include a mountain bike skills “flow line” that switchbacks down the hillside above the site, a large pump track for beginner and intermediate riders, and beginner and intermediate/advanced dirt jumps.

“Attracting and educating the next generation of riders is a primary goal of the park,” said Carbondale Recreation Director Jeff Jackel. “The new terrain will provide a wonderful opportunity for inclusion of the park in school fitness cur-

riculums, as well as for extracurricular activities. This new park will provide school-age children with a professionally designed bike park that provides a safe, no-cost recreational opportunity without having to travel by car.”

The project is funded by a Great Outdoors Colorado matching grant of $45,000, a $25,000 Garfield County Federal Mineral Lease District grant, $10,000 in town funding, $10,000 from Alpine Bank, and $5,000 in community donations.

Crews broke ground on July 2 and completion is expected in six weeks.

DirtSculpt employees have been clearing the site, sifting out the rocks to prep the dirt, cutting in the hillside mountain bike trail, and building jumps and berms. (Project organizers are imploring the community to not ride at the park while under construction, as it will impede the work and add more time to the schedule.)

The volunteer effort has been in the works for two years and is being managed by the Bikes, Pedestrian and Trails Commission.

Darryl Fuller is a member of the bike and trails commission and volunteered to head up the project as another way to promote a positive recreational activity for community members.

“I see it as a larger effort to create a healthy, pragmatic and fun outlet for people to ride bikes,” Fuller told The Sopris Sun. Carbondale is riding the wave of a growing trend in the mountain biking world. The Carbondale Branch Library celebrates its ďŹ rst anniversary with cake and good cheer at 1 p.m. on July 21. “Thank you for all your support during this ďŹ rst year. We look forward to many more great years to come!â€? said a library spokeswoman. After moving from the old Gordon Cooper Library building on Fourth Street to the larger digs on Sopris Avenue, the Carbondale Branch Library has: seen more than 100,000 people visit the library; users checked out 74 percent more books, DVDs and other materials; adult programs such as the Writers’ Group and First Wednesday Book Club were added; after-school programs such as iPad labs, Lego Day and PAWs to read were also added. Attendance at events is also up by 32 percent.

It ain’t exactly like the swallows to San Juan Capistrano, but an insect us locals call “deer iesâ€? have returned to the Delaney dog park (aka Carbondale Nature Park). The vshaped rascals tend to bite about two or three seconds after their skinny little legs latch on to your uncovered skin. Fortunately, the ies do not run around in swarms. The Sopris Sun is monitoring the deer y situation at Delaney dog park and will try to alert everyone when the coast is clear.

On a semi-related note, tall-grass turding conditions are in effect at the park, which means you only have to search for your dog’s dropping for about ďŹ ve seconds before moving on, but in doing so you are ethically bound to pick up the next one you see, regardless of dog-of-origin.

A native-born Roaring Fork Valley resident sidled up to a Sopris Sunner the other day, and asked whether he coined the moniker “Bonedale,â€? which some use interchangeably with “Carbondale.â€? The Sunner replied that he would be proud to have come up with the nick-name but in good conscience could not accept the glory (one of the few times he’s shown such restraint). The Sunner said he thinks he heard “Bonedaleâ€? used soon after he moved to the area in 1979. Vandalism causes Ron Patch ball field’s closure Traveling teams could be culprit John Colson

By Sopris Sun Correspondent Bob Dylan once wrote in a song, “The pump don’t work ’cuz the vandals took the handles,” and it appears that something similar has happened in Carbondale, with the closure of the Ron Patch Memorial Baseball Field at the south end of town.

The fields, jointly managed by the town and the Roaring Fork School District Re-1, were closed to public use last week following an incident in which an unknown group of ball players disabled the sprinkler system that waters the field, apparently after the sprinklers came on during a game, according to Mike Dumond, grounds crew supervisor for the school district.

The field is named after the late Ron Patch, father of Carbondale Mayor Stacey Patch Bernot, and one of 14 coal miners who died in a 1981 coal mine fire near the village of Redstone on the Crystal River.

“I don’t mind letting people use the field, but if they start trashing stuff, it’s not all right,” Dumond told The Sopris Sun on Wednesday, explaining that the district has spent roughly $1,000 a year in repairing damage to the field, gates in the fence around the field, and now, the control valves for the sprinkler system.

The public historically has been able to use the fields in the late summer, once the town’s recreational softball leagues finish their season.

Carbondale Recreation Director Jeff Jackel this week said that the late-summer use of the Ron Patch field has been dominated by “traveling leagues of … teams” who organize games in towns around the Western Slope, though he was unsure whether the vandalism of the sprinkler system could be blamed on that particular group.

“Maybe it was just a pickup game” involving players living in the neighborhood, he speculated.

In any event, both men said there have been problems with public use of the field for some time.

For one thing, according to Dumond and Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling, the field has been found littered with empty beer bottles and cans following a game, despite a prohibition against drinking on school property.

“This happens every year,” Dumond said of the littering, although Jackel said that he had talked to a league organizer last year and that the users began clearing up after the games after that.

Following the disabling of the sprinkler controls, Dumond said, the district has put the fields off limits to the public for at least this summer.

Vandalism on the rise?

Carbondale police officers, in the course of handling roughly 300 incidents per week, have steadily reported a small number of cases of vandalism, items stolen from cars, damage to public property and other minor disturbances and crimes, according to weekly

summaries of police activities submitted by town manager Jay Harrington to the town’s board of trustees.

Schilling told The Sopris Sun this week that, while some incidents may seem alarming to citizens, in fact they are not out of the ordinary, and are fairly typical for this time of the year.

Pot problems not expected at Mountain Fair

other cases that often involve local bored teenagers looking for something to do.

“I mean, the kids are out of school in the summer,” Schilling continued, which he indicated contributes to an annual rise in the rate of minor crimes every year.

“But it doesn’t seem out of the norm,” he said of this year’s incidence of such cases. “I wouldn’t characterize it as, things are on the increase. These things go up and down.”

Police are being vigilant, Schilling said, adding that the use of cops on bicycles seems to help minimize the numbers of actual crimes being committed, whether by bored youths or adults.

For instance, he said, several weeks ago a bicycle patrol officer came across two teenagers walking along an unspecified street, looking into cars, apparently checking them out to see if they were locked and if there were keys in the ignition.

The kids were contacted by the officer, Schilling said, but “we didn’t have any proof they were doing anything wrong,” so they were not arrested or charged with any crime.

In another incident, vandals earlier in the summer damaged one of the pedestrian bridges across a town ditch at the western edge of Sopris Park, kicking or ramming out some of the stone work on the bridge. That damage has since been repaired.

And in yet another separate incident, the front windows of the Pour House Saloon and Mary’s Main Street Spirits were both damaged last week. Again, according to Harrington’s summary, the case is under investigation and there were no arrests.

On a positive note, the chief said, “Car thefts are down.”

He said the town experienced a surge of car thefts “about a year and a half ago,” which police attributed to “frequent cases of people joyriding in cars” that were left unlocked and with the keys inside.

Two teenage suspects, who Schilling said were working together, ultimately were arrested and prosecuted, after one was caught by the Glenwood Springs Police Department driving a car that had been stolen in Carbondale.

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Don’t expect recreational marijuana to generate much of a hit on this year’s Carbondale Mountain Fair.

Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling told The Sopris Sun the state’s new marijuana possession statute will be enforced in accordance with the town’s open container ordinance. In other words, if the cops catch you smoking a joint in a public place, you’ll be asked to fork it over or dispose of it yourself.

As for the Roaring Fork Valley’s biggest party of the year, “There’s always been pot at the Mountain Fair,” said Amy Kimberly, executive director of the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities. “I mean, c’mon! But people have managed to do it in discreet ways,” ways that have only rarely resulted in arrests by the police officers who patrol the fair’s main venue, Sopris Park.

Colorado voters, in elections in 2000 and 2012, have legalized pot use for medicinal and recreational purposes, with a variety of restrictions in both kinds of use, including a prohibition against smoking pot in public places such as Sopris Park.

And if some do choose to openly indulge in their desire to get high at this year’s Mountain Fair, the volunteer forces of the Peace Patrol will be there to tell them to quit it.

“I think people understand that when they purchase marijuana they can’t just smoke it anywhere they want,” Kimberly continued during an interview this week.

“The fair is not about pot,” she added, “the fair is about creating a place where people can be together and enjoy themselves in a safe environment,” enjoyment that includes listening to live music from the main stage and other places, have a beverage at the beer garden tent or a meal at one of the innumerable

food booths, or simply stroll around interacting with old friends.

And, in general, she said, the public has showed restraint in the use of pot at public events in the recent past.

So, what if the Peace Patrol does come across some person or persons smoking weed in the park during Mountain Fair?

“We’ll probably just call the police,” she said, after explaining that the offenders likely will be given the chance to simply extinguish their smokables on their first offense. A call to the cops would only come if the miscreants were seen toking up more than once, she said.

As for public notices, warning fair goers to abstain from smoking pot publicly, Kimberly pointed out that it’s illegal to smoke tobacco in the park, as well.

Signs will be posted, she said, advising attendees that there is “No Smoking of Any Kind” permitted in the park that weekend.

Plus, she said, “I’m sure I’ll put a few announcements out there” from the stage, in between acts.

“Our plan is to be proactive, so we won’t have to be reactive,” Kimberly explained.

Speaking on July 14, Kimberly said she had a meeting scheduled with Police Chief Gene Schilling the next day, and that pot would be among the topics discussed.

But overall, she said, “We really have faith that that’s not going to be that big of an issue.”

Meanwhile, out on the street, Schilling said that vehicles parked on thoroughfares are “public places.”

As a result, pulling on weed in your vehicle is illegal.

Pardon My Garden Club tour puts spotlight on Carbondale In only its second year, the Pardon My Garden Club tour on Saturday, July 19 features 10 gardens in River Valley Ranch, around town and a mile or two beyond. Each garden shows its creator’s own approach and philosophy. One gardener discovered bits of Carbondale’s past when she started digging and found a rusty horseshoe and barbed wire, then reected upon the fact that the dirt’s river rocks date back millions of years. A Japanese garden reects the quality of making the creation look “untouched by man,â€? according to the tour program. Another gardener speciďŹ cally set out to create a bed that will produce color all summer. The Pardon My Garden Club was started in 1993 and boasts 75 members from Aspen to Carbondale. District reinstates wildfire program

Town seeking board members

Thanks to donations from Les and Abigail Wexner, Bren Simon, Sue Rodgers and others, the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District is reinstating its wildfire patrols through the rest of the wildfire season, according to a press release. The program pays for firefighters to patrol the district looking for fires (usually caused by lightning) so they can be extinguished before they spread. The district eliminated the patrols after last November’s ballot question tax hike defeat and subsequent budget cuts.

Fire district board member Gene Schilling said the patrols will cost about $50,000 to $60,000 through the rest of the year. The Carbondale Fire District covers 320 square miles of public and private land and stretches from Marble to Missouri Heights.

The town of Carbondale has several vacancies on boards and commissions and is looking for applicants to step up. There are openings on: the Planning & Zoning Commission, Environmental Board, Parks & Recreation Commission, Board of Adjustment & Appeals, Tree Board, and Historic Preservation Commission. The deadline to apply is July 31. Applications and descriptions of all town boards and commissions can be found at carbondalegov.org.

Elephant gets a make over Pitkin County is undertaking major upgrades and repairs to its Elephant Mountain translator site, located above Filoha Meadows along Highway 133 (just north of Redstone). Introductions: Meet some “undercover bonecrushers” Climbers calling Carbondale home

proximity of Carbondale to Rifle Mountain Park, Indian Creek, Utah, and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. All three of these destinations have world-class climbing and are merely a weekend trip away.

As I talked to Ryan about climbing, family, and life he spoke softly, using only the words that mattered, a testament to his meticulous and efficient character as an alpine climber. There was an aura of peace and gratification about him; he was happy to have successfully climbed in the mountains and to return safely to his family.

I run into Ryan periodically in Carbondale, nervous about what to say. Then I realize he is totally human and simply loves climbing and living Carbondale where he’s truly happy.

Under the ever-protecting gaze of Mount Sopris, myself and many other Carbondaleans have found a life of peace in this beautiful town. To me Carbondale was my second chance at life, my saving grace.

I proudly call this mountain haven my home and the birthplace of my passion: rock climbing.

Samuel Lynde Holden was born on July 23, 1944 in Brattleboro, Vermont. He died suddenly on July 7 of a ruptured aortic aneurysm.

Established in Snowmass, a devoted father and husband to Savannah and Kim; Sam is also survived by sons Peter Spencer Holden and Scott Robert Holden; brother Ben; foster sister Rusty; daughter-in-law Jennifer; grandchildren Aspen, Bailey and Spencer; stepson Aaron Anderson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sam came to Carbondale in 1953 when his parents founded Colorado Rocky Mountain School. A wanderer, Sam moved around the western states throughout his adult life, always returning to the valley. He held many jobs from truck driver to chef and was also a skilled natural stonemason. He was loved and respected by many.

He had his two sons, Peter and Scott, with his first wife Elizabeth Crismon. His second marriage was to Fran Page. In 1998 he married Kim, with whom he welcomed the arrival of his daughter Savannah almost 13 years ago.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 26 at the Eagles Club in Aspen where he was president for three years: reception from 2 p.m., service at 3 p.m. The family has requested no flowers. A collection box has been placed at the Eagles Club to help support his daughter Savannah.

Ribbon cut Roaring Fork Family Practice cut the symbolic ribbon for its new 10,000-square-foot clinic on July 15, although the doors won’t open to patients until July 21. The clinic’s history dates back to 1958 when a group of citizens formed the TriCounty Medical Association.

“I think it’s exciting for the future of the sport because you’re creating venues where kids on Stryder bikes can be out starting to learn balance and how to maneuver around terrain. Or adults that have never ridden before can have a controlled place where they can go and learn some skills and build some competencies and hopefully take those skills out to nearby trails,” said Fuller, who originally took on organizing the project and helped launch formal public meetings beginning in February 2012.

In addition to cash donations, the Bikes, Pedestrian and Trails Commission is now seeking in-kind donations of landscaping elements, such as trees, shrubs, boulders, and more to enhance the park-like feel of the site, according to volunteer organizer and commission member Rob Morey.

Morey says it’s fulfilling to see the project come to fruition and noted Darryl Fuller how a bike park is will attract a variEarly park organizer ety of users, including people from different socio-economic backgrounds.

“I think it’s an amazing spot next to an existing park,” said Morey, a former BMX racer who spent his childhood days building jumps and hits. He added that the park’s location — accessible by bike paths and next to the skate park, school athletic fields, and the higher-density neighborhoods of Carbondale South and Villas de Santa Lucia apartments (operated by Catholic Charities) — is unique and beneficial.

“We can have a safe place for kids to hang out. I grew up not having camps and stuff so I built jumps. Giving kids access to recreation that’s quality and free is important. Plus, it’s a great amenity and the park will have something for the young and young at heart alike,” he said.

Considering sustainability and Highway 133

By Patrick Hunter At the risk of piling on, I have to agree with others that the best thing to set in the middle of the new Highway 133 roundabout is nothing. There is simply nothing man-made that can compete with Mount Sopris, or Mount Fuji or Mount Rainier, for that matter. The time to contemplate a piece of art is not while you’re driving a 4,000 pound wrecking ball around a curve and trying to avoid a collision with all the others — as well as pedestrians dashing across the lane. Not to mention bicycles that could be anywhere.

If there should be any sculpture, it should NOT be former Denver Mayor Richard Sopris on a horse. However, it could possibly be a bronze statue (or marble) of one or two helmeted coal miners.

Probably include an ore car. After all, these are the men that went underground and gave their lungs, and in some cases their lives, for Carbondale. Emphasis on the “carbon.” The average driver could figure it out in about the blink of an eye.

Lacking the miners, flowers only — please.

I’ll wager that in two or three years you will be hearing about the need to four-lane the highway — “The congestion is killing us!”

The original highway was County Road 106, the street I live on. Highway 133 was a “bypass” to allow higher speed traffic to run between Highway 82 and Delta. So, I want to officially kick-off the new campaign to bypass the bypass — www:bytheby.org. It may have to be a viaduct; that is, an elevated road. Of course, that’s what Glenwood Springs needs to do. CDOT might like that.

The problem with improving roads is you are treating the symptoms, not the cause. The problem is not inadequate roads; the problem is too many vehicles.

Unfortunately, most of the world is under the tragic misconception that anyone should be able to get into a 4,000 pound steel box sitting on rubber tires and go wherever they want, any time they want.

There are lots of reasons why billions of cars and trucks and airplanes are a bad idea; but one of the best is that vehicles are killing off the planet.

Unfortunately, the modern world is based on unlimited transportation. Not only has this produced unprecedented pollution that is rapidly changing the world’s weather and climate, but it has led to rapid depletion of our earth’s resources.

Changes coming The improvements to Highway 133 will change the way people drive to or past Carbondale. The interesting thing about road improvements is that they increase rather than decrease traffic. This warms the cockles of the hearts (cockles by the way are clams — go figure) of the members of the

A suggestion To back off the heavy stuff for a while, I have a little suggestion for RFTA and CDOT. There is an RV park at the intersection of Highway 133 and Highway 82.

By the way, this suggestion follows my earlier suggestion that the “Marketplace” development planned to contain a “big-box” store (behind 7/Eleven), instead be relocated to the side of Highway 82 across from the Aspen Glen subdivision. In essence, follow the Basalt genius example of a “flagpole” annexation. This could be done because the town of Carbondale bought the RV park. In this way the traffic and chaos stay out of “town,” but the tax dollars come in. The “regional” shoppers from up and down the valley would not have to negotiate Highway 133.

Next step. RFTA should not bring their BRT (bus rapid transit) into the Carbondale area. Those buses should stay on Highway 82. RFTA should never have put its new park-n-ride lot at the Village Lane intersection, which has become nuts. Now remember, the town of Carbondale owns the RV Park. The proper location for the park-n-ride is the town’s RV Park.

The best way to get in and out of that park, and the best way to deal with the insane Highway 82/Highway 133 intersection, is to build a kick-ass roundabout.

(CDOT has just assigned a Hellfire missileshooting drone to my location.) Hey, it’s only money; raise the gas tax. Colorado has

one of the lowest per gallon taxes at 22 cents and it hasn’t been raised in 21 years.

I just put $60 worth of gas in my tank.

In London, UK, that would have been $128. In Norway, which owns its own oil production that would have been $158.

Years ago, Norway’s prime minister, a woman at the time, came to the U.S. and told us we were idiots for undercharging for gasoline and thereby wasting a precious resource. What did she know? As I was watching the dollars click over on the pump I recalled that U.S. gasoline consumption is right now lower than it has been in years. (Very significantly lower by some accounts.) Supplies of refined gasoline are more than adequate. However, refineries are now using U.S. oil to make gasoline and exporting it. U.S. oil is “sweeter” and easier and cheaper to refine.

Exporting our own oil as gasoline seems to violate the whole idea around “energy independence.” Refiners then make the domestic gasoline out of more expensive and nasty imported oil so they can charge higher prices. Don’t forget our friends on Wall Street. I’ve heard their cut is 40 cents a gallon. I bet it’s more.

Sixth annual Mountainfilm announces festival lineup Sopris Sun Staff Report The Wheeler Opera House and Mountainfilm in Telluride have announced the line-up of films and guests for the sixth MountainSummit: Mountainfilm In Aspen festival, slated for Aug. 21-24, according to a press release.

MountainSummit: Mountainfilm In Aspen is a collaboration between Aspen’s oldest year-round performance venue and Telluride’s 36-year-old film festival that features award-winning documentary films alongside outdoor adventurers and social activists.

The festival starts at 5:45 p.m. on August 21, with “The Grand Rescue.” The film documents a 1967 rescue in the Grand Tetons in which seven national park rangers risked their lives over the course of three days to save a pair of stranded climbers. The program continues at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 21 with “Wrenched,” which explores the life of author/activist/curmudgeon Edward Abbey. “His life was the stuff of legend even as he lived it, and his legacy is the kaleidoscope of eco-activists he inspired, good and bad,” said the press release. A discussion with

The Aug. 22 program starts with at 5:15 p.m. with “Walled In.” This film is the story of a first descent of the treacherous Marble Fork of the Kaweah River in Sequoia National Park by kayakers Ben Stookesbury and Chris Korbulic. The river drops 12,000 feet in under 30 miles and prompts the question of why they engage in a sport that carries the threat of death. At 6:30 p.m., MountainSummit features “Vessel.” Warship blockades and frenzied protesters often await Rebecca Gomperts and her Women On Waves team when they sail their ship to foreign ports to offer hope and services to desperate women with unwanted pregnancies (often attained through rape

and incest). In many of the countries they visit, abortion is illegal and therefore deadly. But Gomperts’ approach is to transport women 12 miles offshore into international waters, where the laws of her Dutch ship prevail. Friday’s late slot is the latest work from Academy award nominated filmmaker Marshall Curry. “Point and Shoot” concerns itself with Matthew Van Dyke, a young American from a privileged background who has OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), and decides that in order to “man up,” he needs to buy a motorcycle and a video camera, and travel alone across North Africa all the way to Afghanistan, riding and shooting everything he sees.

Along the way he makes friends in Libya, and after the civil war starts there, he feels compelled to go back and join his friends as a revolutionary. His experience tests the boundaries of reality, especially after his capture, solitary incarceration, and unexpected freedom. This film won the grand prize for documentaries at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival.

Rounding out the festival are “Once Upon a Forest,” “High Tension,” “Virunga,” Queens and Cowboys,” “Last Days in Vietnam,” “Tashi and the Monk” and “An Honest Liar.” Tickets go on sale at aspenshowtix.com on July 22.

I grew up here. I have learned to accept and expect change in a positive way. Carbondale does not belong to one type of person. That may come as a shock to some people, but I have lived here my whole life and I have made room for all of you so now it is your turn. Let someone else in.

Join senior housing talk Dear Editor: Join us to determine and to address senior housing needs in the valley; the aging well community!

While we are aware of existing senior services and programs in each community in the

valley, let’s explore the structure needed to provide the most practical and inviting access to a continuation of independent living lifestyle.

This coalition needs to consist of interested folks from Rifle to Aspen: Seniors wanting to downsize, children concerned about their parents care and housing needs, seniors who want to live independently with security and dignity.

This valley needs to be concerned about an “aging well community” with concerns including: • Access to housing in order to downsize and remain in the valley: • Access to safety and physical and mentalhealth services; • Access to services that support their wellness (nutrition, exercise, brain fitness, socialization and spirituality); • Access to social and civic engagement.

Residents of this valley need to be aware of not only the economic loss to our community should these seniors have to move elsewhere to maintain their lifestyle but also the loss of the experience, volunteer hours, etc. that they contribute to our community.

Fire district is crucial Dear Editor: For the last 10 years, the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District has put an enor-

mous amount of effort and expense in building a first-class staff of firefighters/EMTs/ paramedics. This group of individuals, most of which are former volunteers, are highly trained and motivated to provide the very best quality of care for this community. These people respond to all manner of calls for emergency services from emergency medical calls, forest fire, swift water rescue and everything in between. They make life saving decision every day. They are also required to do janitorial tasks around the station, like cleaning toilets and mopping floors. It is a thankless job that goes on night and day.

I am not sure many people understand the work hours these people put in. There are three shifts that work on 48 hours rotating shifts to cover 365 days a year. That means that a full one-third of the year these people are away from their families, holidays included.

If further cuts are required due to a shrinking budget, the district will likely lose some of these people forever. It could take 10 years to rebuild the staff once property values rise.

This potential reduction in staff could mean that many of the improvements to the emergency medical service, the paramedic and advanced life support programs, and improved response times to calls, will be lost.

I want lower taxes, everybody does, but there are choices to be made and consequences to those choices. Unfortunately the district finds itself in the current budget problem because they do their job very well. The public never hears about all the fires the district puts out because they are kept small and not news

worthy. If another County Road 100 fire had happened last year I am sure the mill levy increase would have passed last fall. Don’t wait until it’s too late to support the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District.

Voicing property rights Dear Editor: I talked to a great guy the other day. He bought a house, a home for his family. A few months ago there was a knock on his door. It seems a well is imminent nearby and would he sign a waiver for a few thousand dollars?

One reason he said no is because the bore goes through his aquifer to the gas below. To add insult to injury, this gentleman has absolutely no local recourse and zero voice in the entire process.

I believe that every citizen has the right to voice an opinion, especially when it comes to the health and safety of his family. Therefore, our county government has the responsibility to provide that opportunity through the review process and local regulation. When it counts, you need to be heard.

In June, the Garfield County Planning and Zoning Commission tackled a similar issue. P&Z voted unanimously to recommend a review and approval process for offpad oil and gas locations in residential zones.

It gives you a voice and allows the industry to consolidate operations.

Cucina and The Roaring Fork Beer Company, not to mention the many blacksmiths, woodworkers and designers who have called Carbondale home for many years.

The Creative District program does require us to define an official district, which I have outlined as going from the Rio Grande Trail to The Third Street Center and Thompson House, including our historic downtown core and the library. Our Creative Industry strategies will include the Dolores Way and SAW areas. While much of this is about economy, it is also about retaining who we are. Previous

thing else, from fracking to injection wells, in every other land use category, is a use by right or exempt. That’s millions of acres where we have absolutely nothing to say, regardless of how close the process comes. This is a core issue of my campaign for county commissioner.

I realize that there is a cost, in both time and money, to prepare a review. But it must be the price to do business in Garfield County.

Reviews assure that your property rights have a voice in public, a basic liberty.

I encourage Mr. Jankovsky to support the recommendation of the Garfield County Planning and Zoning Commission when submitted to the commissioners on July 21.

Lovin’ Shooters Dear Editor: I loved the article on the Shooters. I don’t see anything distasteful regarding the waitresses nor the owner. For anybody that doesn’t like this, then hey you don’t have to go there. I am sure there were a lot of you that were hoping that their business would drop off and instead it went wild and crazy. This is still the Western Slope. We still hunt and fish and we still enjoy it. This is a free country.

We still have gun ranges.

We have ancestors that wore guns all the time. If you don’t like guns, then that’s your affair. We were raised around guns, our kids were around guns, our grandkids were around guns. We all have gun safes. Everyone has had a gun safety course.

The way this world is today, we will defend our home and our food and anything we have with a gun if need be. We don’t have to walk down the street, but we can if we choose to with our gun.

Ask any in-state or out-of-state-hunter some time. They walk around with their guns on their hips to go to hunting camp. So if there is some business that doesn’t want that to happen, then you’re free to put up a sign saying “You’re not welcome to come in here with a gun on your hip.” We just won’t patronize your business.
