By Amelia Potvin and Dave Reed Our group came together like a small flash mob, gathering in the marble corridor 15 minutes before the meeting was to start. We recognized each other by the blue “Citizens’ Climate Lobby” buttons we wore.

We got right to work: Who’s the lead?

Who’ll take notes? How many of us are constituents and what things do we want to acknowledge the congressman for?

It was a scene that was repeated 500 times last week, as Citizens’ Climate Lobby volunteers from all around the country traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with their mem-

bers of Congress and their staffs to find a bipartisan solution to climate change. More than 600 volunteers were there — twice as many as at last year’s lobbying day — representing over 200 CCL chapters. We went on behalf of the Roaring Fork Valley chapter, which formed last fall.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a fast-growing movement that takes a unique, almost Gandhian approach to global warming. As its name suggests, it trains and empowers citizens to directly lobby their members of Congress for climate legislation. Specifically, we’re advocating for a revenue-neutral car-

bon tax, with all revenues returned to households. This is the policy that has the best chance of achieving bipartisan support, because economists on the right and the left agree that putting a price on carbon emissions is the fairest way to reduce them, and because returning the money to households avoids enlarging government.

In the office of Rep. Mike Coffman, a Republican from the Denver suburbs, our group consisted of a 16-year-old from Michigan, a physicist from Longmont, a concerned advocate from Massachusetts, and a teacher from CITIZENS’ CLIMATE LOBBY page 19

Needed: books, not vision Dear Editor: Does the Garfield County library system really need to create a vision for its public services? According to The Sopris Sun (June 26) it has hired consultant JVA Consulting to develop strategic and marketing plans. Cost is certainly in the thousands of dollars.

I don’t know why the highest priority is to spend money on what they could be doing when I spend weeks or months waiting for a

popular best seller to arrive in Carbondale.

I moved here from a community that is also rural (Moab, Utah) but their book collection is so much larger and more available.

I am happy that the Marmot statewide system is in place. I just hope that the state library doesn’t divert its resources to a vision statement when good books are so short in supply. I don’t recall that the library patrons were asked. Basic services would be a No. 1 on the upcoming vision statement. That, by

Fourth of July: Time to Boogie in Bonedale Sopris Sun Staff Report When was the last time the Fourth of July was also a First Friday? Well, while you’re consulting your smart phone or some other source of infinite knowledge, here’s what’s going down at Boogie in Bonedale on July 4, brought to you by the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities, Carbondale Moms for Moms, Friends of the Fourth committee and Carbondale Recreation Department.

For the 36th straight year, hundreds of kids with and without their handlers will pedal, stride, walk, hop, skip and generally head west on Main Street starting at 10:30 a.m. Many kids, adults and pets will be festooned in red, white and blue. Paraders will start forming up at Second and Main at 10 a.m. in the following order: fire engines, ages 14 and up, ages 9-13, ages 6-8, ages 5 and under, adults and animals.

The parade ends in Sopris Park and at that location from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. there’ll be food, kids carnival games, a bounce house, free watermelon and ice cream sandwiches and live music with Lyn Byars. The swimming pool will also be open with discounted dips from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Fourth of July action shifts back downtown when Main Street is closed from Third Street to Weant Boulevard starting at 5 p.m. One of the first orders of business will be Chalk It Up Carbondale!, in which Main Street businesses will provide ammo to chalk artists of all persuasions and skill levels. Outlined bodies are always a popular theme but the concrete canvas is wide open to whatever inspires you.

Music kicks off with the No Joes at the Fourth Street Plaza stage at 5 p.m. Formed in 2008, the No Joes won the JAS Band Battle Middle School Garage Band title for four years in a row and went on to perform at Steve’s Guitars

The Fourth of July kids parade brings out Bonedale’s best each year. If you’d like to join in, kid or not, head over to Second and Main at 10 a.m. and organizers will find you a spot. Staff helping plan professional bike race Sopris Sun Staff Report Carbondale staff members met with city of Aspen staff members to discuss the Aspen to Crested Butte leg of the USA PRO Challenge bike race on Aug. 19, according to town manager Jay Harrington’s weekly report. Bicyclists will enter Carbondale from Catherine Store Road then go onto Main Street. There will be a prize sprint at Main Street and Fourth Street as the cyclists continue to Seventh Street, where they will turn south toward Euclid Avenue. The cyclists will turn left on Euclid toward Weant Boulevard where they will turn right toward Highway 133 and continue over McClure Pass to Crested Butte. “We will need 26 Type III barricades, 10 Type I barricades and 26 town staff and volunteers to secure the race route,” Harrington’s report said.

In other paraphrased news from the report: • DirtSculpt LLC was awarded the contract for the Carbondale Community Bike Park and will begin construction on the project the week of June 30-July 4.

• Design Workshop was awarded the contract for the 10year update to the Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan. They will be meeting with the Parks & Recreation Commission in July to kick-off the project.

• Because of recent events in the upper valley, the town has disseminated information to lodges regarding THC (marijuana) candy and its dangers to children of housekeeping crews. Some Aspen lodging housekeeping crews are allowed to bring home what they find in rooms they clean. This has led to at least one THC poisoning of a child who ate THC candies.

• The Planning and Zoning Commission reviewed and recommended approval of the application for a group home to be located at 634 Euclid Ave. The application will next be reviewed by the Board of Trustees at a future meeting. The P&Z also reviewed and approved the proposed BRT parking lot site plan

for the parking expansion and approved it with added conditions. The review is required for the encroachment into the 30foot landscape buffer along Highway 133. The P&Z will be reviewing an infill application at 178 S. Eighth Street and a condominium exemption at ET Plaza at its July 24 meeting.

• The utilization rate at Gateway RV Park the week of June 21-27 was 57 percent (69 booked nights out of 120 available spots).

• Banners advertising “Historic Downtown Carbondale Shops, Galleries and Restaurants” have been placed at Highway 133 and Weant Boulevard, and on Colorado Avenue and Village Road.

• Youth softball and baseball is in “full swing” with weekly practices and games taking place at River Valley Ranch, Bill Hanks and Tiny Nightingale fields. Adult men’s softball league games take place every Tuesday night at Bill Hanks Field. Registration for recreation programs is open as www.carbondalerec.com.

• Vandals kicked or rammed the concrete blocks on one of the Sopris Park bridges into the Weaver Ditch. The parks supervisor waded into the ditch to retrieve the blocks and fixed the bridge.

• From the police department, cases of note the week of June 12-26 included: burglary (two cases), DUI (four), child abuse (one), criminal mischief (two), warrant arrests (two) and theft (two).

• Police officers have been issuing lights to bicyclists at night who are violating the state’s lighting requirements. Officers also continue to patrol on bicycles when staffing allows it. Numerous warnings were given out on June 21 to cyclists on Main Street for failing to observe traffic control devices and riding on the Main Street sidewalks.

Cop Shop The following events are drawn from incident reports of the C’dale Police Dept.

TUESDAy June 24 Police investigated a report of a juvenile possibly using Facebook to facilitate a marijuana transaction. The information was turned over to the TRIDENT drug taskforce.

THURSDAy June 26 At 12:27 a.m. on Fourth Street, police contacted several people who were playing music loudly. The musicians were asked to quiet down and they said they would.

FRIDAy June 27 At 10:21 p.m. police contacted a male and female in a car.

The pair said they were just talking and the police officers observed “nothing criminal.”

FRIDAy June 27 At 11:31 p.m. at Fourth and Main, an officer warned an intoxicated man who was standing in the middle of the street.

SATURDAy June 28 At 12:04 a.m. on County Road 106, officers observed two males, 49 and 62, sleeping in their vehicle. After the contact, the men moved on.

SUNDAy June 29 At 12:38 a.m. at Fourth and Main, police observed a woman sitting in her car with a cup of beer. She was given a warning.

Doctors reflect on a half-century of family practice New clinic building opens July 21

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Carbondale is about to take its next step in the continuing evolution of small-town medical care, when the doctors, nurses and technicians who have met the town’s medical needs for decades move into a new building and a new kind of business arrangement.

The Roaring Fork Family Practice clinic, 1340 Highway 133, will move later this month to a new home just two blocks away, at the corner of Euclid Avenue and Highway 133 — a short stroll for a pedestrian but a big jump for the doctors.

The new building’s open house will be on July 15, which actually will be before the docs finish moving in and open up the doors for business.

That will come on July 21, after a hectic week of shifting furniture and records, equipment and everything else, which will be accomplished in part by the 25 people who work at the clinic, and in part by professional movers.

After that, as they say, history will have been made and it will be time to settle down to business, in which the doctors and other staff will be employees of Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.

Half century of care It all started back in 1958, when a group of local citizens decided Carbondale needed a doctor’s clinic and raised money to build one — a 1,200-square-foot Sears & Roebuck kit building that offered what was then the most up-to-date, small-town medical care going, in a practice known as the TriCounty Medical Clinic.

Now, 56 years later, the medical needs of an expanding community have outgrown that once-tiny clinic, and the Roaring Fork Family Practice will move into a new home with twice the space (10,000 square feet compared to 5,000 square feet in the current building), more patient-care technology, more medical specialists and more than twice as many employee amenities as the old one.

The two senior doctors of the practice, who both have been working at the office for more than half of its existence, are still there and plan to stay on for the foreseeable future.

“I think I’ve got two or three years left in me,” said Dr. Gary Knaus, 65, who came to the practice in 1978 after growing up in Rifle and going to school at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins and the University of Colorado Medical School in Boulder.

“I’d like to practice until I’m 70 or 71,” said Dr. Richard Herrington, 68, originally from Lincoln, Nebraska and later, Ft. Collins, Colorado. He went to medical school at the University of Colorado Denver in 1972, did his residency in Ogden, Utah and first arrived in Carbondale in 1974, after a harrowing drive over Scofield Pass (above Marble) in his then-new Scout International while on a trip to check out the region’s medical practice opportunities.

That gives Herrington 39 years on the job here and Knaus 35 years, at a practice that apparently inspires lengthy service from doctors and staff alike. Dr. Kimball Spence joined the practice in 1992 after a residency at the

University of Nevada in Reno, which gives him 22 years here. And Dr. John Findley, who left earlier this year, was part of the practice for 15 years.

And that, of course, does not include the office staff, such as Cindy Watkins in medical records, who has been there for 32 years, Herrington said; Dianne White, with 30 years; Susie Cheney in billing and insurance, 22 years; receptionist Connie Williams, 22 years; and receptionist Kathy Hunter, 15 years.

Herrington recalled that the Tri-County Medical Association board, which built the new clinic in 1958, included such local luminaries as John Holden (co-founder of Colorado Rocky Mountain School), and a long-time local veterinarian whom Herrington remembered only as “Doc” Harlan, among others.

The association built the clinic in 1958 using money from a Sears Foundation grant, on a section of pastureland donated to the association by the late Elmer Bair, a rancher of considerable renown in this area.

A physician named Dr. Tubbs was the first doctor in Carbondale, as far as Herrington knows, and he practiced out of his house (the building that until recently housed the nowshuttered Six89 Restaurant and, further back was the home of long time locals Paul and Ginny Lappala). Herrington still has a large oak roll-top desk he bought from Tubbs’s children years later; the desk the old doctor had used in his practice.

Another physician, Dr. Harry Hendricks (the Hendricks Ranch subdivision is built on his old property) was the first to practice at the Tri-County Medical Center, but he left in the late 1960s, Herrington reported.

Hendricks was followed, after a short gap in time, by Dr. Al Waskie, who was still in residence when Herrington got here, but Waskie left in 1978, leaving Herrington as the sole doctor.

Growing with the town To help him get established, Herrington said, the association offered him six months rent-free, and three local women agreed to work for him free for two months — Dorothy Marshall, a registered nurse, Betty DeBeque, who was an accomplished, if uncertified nurse herself, and Marge Velasquez, who served as secretary and all-around handy woman.

Once the two months were up, Marshall and Velasquez stayed on as paid help, Melanie Gianinetti was hired to be the new secretary, and DeBeque “retired … again,” Herrington said.

At about the same time, the ladies running the Near New second-hand store in town raised perhaps $20,000 to buy a modern X-ray machine, replacing the outmoded relic that was deemed to hazardous to operate for any length of time.

Herrington quickly got to know some of the leaders in town, which at the time was dominated by ranchers and coal miners working for the Mid-Continent mines in Redstone. Roaring Fork Bank (now Alpine Bank) President Bob Young was one, as was PHYSICIANS page 17

Notes on Surls open house The open house for James Surls to explain and discuss his “Sewing the Future” sculpture at town hall from 6 to 8 p.m. on July 7 requires some explaining here. Why? Because the town is “posting” the get together as a Carbondale Board of Trustees meeting, just in case a quorum shows up and a fullfledged trustees meeting technically breaks out. Anyway, a designated trustee is expected to attend the open house to answer possible questions about last year’s process that led to the town agreeing in principal to accept Surls’s gift of his 20-foot “Sewing the Future” sculpture, to be planted in the middle of the Highway 133/Main Street roundabout. As for Surls himself, the noted sculptor who works out of his Missouri Heights studio has explained the symbolism behind his piece several times in recent months, and plans to explain it some more before the roundabout is “sculpture ready” in November. On a related note, the trustees are expected to vote on a motion to accept the sculpture as a gift during the consent part of the agenda at their July 8 meeting.

Glacier hits Fat Belly Glacier Ice Cream, named by Forbes Traveler magazine and the Boulder Daily Camera as Colorado’s best ice cream, is now being served up at Fat Belly Burgers at the east end of Main Street. “Fat Belly is the only Western Slope location for buying Glacier Ice Cream,” said Fat Belly spokeswoman Francie Jacober. Flavors include Key Lime Pie, Jack Daniels Oreos, Chocolate Raspberry Truffle, Root Beer Float and Death by Chocolate. Also new at Fat Belly in the non-ice cream category: two salads made with local and organic seasonal greens and vegetables. “The organic kale-quinoa salad is large enough for a meal by itself, with carrots, red onion, dried cranberries, pistachios, feta cheese and grape tomatoes with a balsamic dressing,” Jacober continued.

“The locavore green salad has all local and organic mixed greens, carrots, radishes or baby turnips, cherry tomatoes

and your choice of balsamic or orange-cilantro dressing.”

Fat Belly still serves several versions of Crystal River Meats burgers, hotdogs and lamb, plus hand-cut French fries, and has added a chilidog with homemade chili.

June finally heats up A not-too-serious weather watcher up Red Hill reports that his ACE hardware thermometer, propped in a shady corner of his south facing porch, recorded its first 90-degree day of June on Sunday.

Remembering Storm King In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the South Canyon fire on Storm King Mountain, each show at the Crystal Theatre on July 4-6 will be preceded by a fiveminute musical tribute by Mateo Sandate, Lyn Byars and Sopia Clark. The Storm King fire near New Castle claimed the lives of 14 federal fire-fighters on July 6, 1994.

Carbondale’s Casey Weaver was the overall winner with a time of 3:30 in the June 28 Aspen Backcountry Marathon. Andea Bauer (from Carbondale) was first in her age group, as was Laurie Guevara-Stone in her age group. Get this: The 119 contestants first ran up Smuggler Mountain then on to Van Horn Park. Carbondale Soda Company: from hobby to business Home delivery coming soon; Aspen expresses interest

By Nicolette Toussaint Sopris Sun Correspondent On May 11, during Dandelion Day, the Carbondale Soda Company popped the cork on a dandelion honey crème soda, offering its first public samples to passers-by. Since then, the new firm has quickly bubbled to life, so far brewing up around 80 gallons of fizzy fun, even though it has advertised only on Facebook and by word of mouth.

“We didn’t realize that we had a company until people started asking for sodas!” chuckles Adam Phillips. “It was more of a hobby at first.”

His partner Cody Skurupey adds, “It caught on, and then we had to go into scramble mode.”

Locals are currently imbibing the Carbondale Soda Company’s sophisticated creations at the Roaring Fork Beer Company and at White House Pizza, which recently held a tasting.

Customers there were invited to try a spicy ginger beer, made from organic ginger and spiked with fatali peppers. “Half of them loved it, and half of them hated it,” reports Phillips. “It’s not for everyone.”

Carbondale Soda Company has also begun a home-delivery subscription program. Bonedalians can sign on for two liters a week on the company’s website at http://carbondalesodaco.com/.

“We love being in Carbondale,” comments Jeff Allinson, who moved here in May, quickly becoming the venture’s third partner. “The quality of ingredients is great around here and people are happy to try something different.”

The company was Phillips’s brainchild. He grew up in Cincinnati watching his mom make soda syrups. He brought cooking and horticultural skills with him when he moved

here to take an IT job with SilverPeak Apothecary in Aspen.

“I didn’t have a home life at first, so I was cooking at home,” he said. “I started making soda hoping to make enough money to make and market a hot sauce. I grow peppers, and tiny drop of fatali pepper sauce goes into the ginger beer.”

Phillips eventually ran into Cody Skurupey at White House Pizza and the two quickly discovered that they shared a Cincinnati background. Skurupey, who had already launched a successful local light bulb recycling business, soon signed on to handle marketing for the Carbondale Soda Company.

Allinson, who oversees finance, has coined a slogan for the company: “Taste the seasons.” The tagline refers to the company’s plan to offer two changing flavors each quarter, rotating them as ingredients come into season.

This June, their menu featured spicy cucumber ginger, honey cream, hops and honey, a dandelion cola, chile Limón (made from lemon verbena and fatali chilis), a chamomile honey and a chamomile lavender flavor. They also brew a root beer using burdock — an invasive weed that local gardeners abhor, but soda sippers love.

The Carbondale Soda Company is brewing in the commercial kitchen of Bravo Catering, has its business licenses in place and is now ramping up its bottling — which means waiting. “You can’t buy just a few bottles,” chuckles Phillips.

“You have to buy 4,000! So we’re waiting for a pallet to arrive.”

The truth is that we weren’t expecting this to take off so fast,” he said.

The company will be brewing a special, secret soda that will be offered to participants in the Glenwood Springs Cruise-aThong on July 19. (Phillips describes the CruiseaThong as a “marathon for the common man.” It includes a one-mile bike race and a flip-flop walk, and the person with the most-average time wins. The event is dedicated to improving the river experience in Glenwood through education

An outlet in Aspen has expressed interest, and the partners have also had inquiries about brewing signature sodas for weddings and parties.

“As far as something new, unique and all-natural, there’s nothing else like this around,” said Skurupey.

“We think this is going to take off,” Allinson added.

E-board talks trash; trash haulers talk back John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent

They were talking trash at Carbondale’s Town Hall on Monday night, but in the end it all came to little beyond a call for more meetings and more talk.

The town’s Environmental Board (aka E-board) called the meeting to get public input for a proposal to rewrite the town’s trash-hauling ordinance, and possibly to rearrange the entire system of trash pickups and disposal.

But after hearing from several local trash haulers, including a lengthy presentation from Scott Eden, a self-described “professor of garbology” and a part-owner of InterMountain Waste and Recycling in Carbondale, the meeting broke up for lack of time.

There will be more talks, however, after one of the organizers, Jason Haber of the Community Office of Resource Efficiency (CORE) called for another meeting and further study of what those at Monday’s meeting generally agreed is a complex subject and one that could have serious ramifications beyond decisions about who picks up trash in town, when they do it and where they take it.

Background Monday’s meeting grew out of a presentation by Haber and E-board member Jason White to the town’s board of trustees in April, about the E-board’s long-standing

interest in seeking ways to better manage the garbage that town residents generate.

Haber offered a summary of issues that included assigning the residential trashhauling business to a single hauler as a way of cutting down on the number of trips through town by trash trucks and reducing road damage, exhaust emissions and noise impacts.

The idea, according to Haber’s list and ideas voiced at the meeting, is to provide a variety of services — regular trash pickup, a greater level of recycling including compost, and pickup of household hazardous waste.

Other topics are to include whether residents would benefit more from a “flat-fee” payment structure. White told the meeting’s attendees that the town has been considering a remake of the trash hauling system for about five years, but that a number of complications arose that derailed the effort until now.

Town Trustee Katrina Byers, appointed as a liaison to the E-board, told those in the room, “I see our waste as an opportunity,” largely to boost recycling as a measure of the town’s commitment to an environmental ethic.

“I think we can put together a really remarkable system,” she declared hopefully.

Others, particularly the professional trash haulers in the room, were more skeptical about the proposed changes.

“You’re going to put me out of business,” said Eden, referring to the idea of

“That’s ridiculous.”

Instead, he said, “Let’s work upstream” to identify the sources of unnecessary trash — such as packaging materials for consumer goods — and cut down on that.

Karen Eden, part-owner of InterMountain, emphasized that having smaller, local companies doing the work offers the benefit of local offices where customers can connect with a human being on the phone who can quickly address and solve problems.

Scott Eden, in his PowerPoint presentation to the meeting, outlined the many complexities involved in the garbage handling business, pointing out that 60 percent of the waste stream in the U.S., statistically speaking, is food waste.

A number of topics listed by Haber never made it into the discussion, such as the issue of bandit dumping — people illegally putting their trash in Dumpsters that they do not pay for.

Despite a lack of progress toward recommendations on how to proceed, Haber said at the end of the meeting, “I don’t think a minute of this has been wasted time.”

And he encouraged those present and anyone with an interest in the subject, to come to the next meeting, scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. on July 23 at Town Hall and make their thoughts known.

putting a single company in charge of everything. He predicted that one of the big national trash companies, such as Waste Management, Inc. (a Texas corporation) would underbid smaller outfits based locally and eliminate them from the market.

“I think everybody should have a choice about who comes to your house to pick up your trash,” said Jackie Bluiss of VIP Trash Services in Glenwood Springs. She also revealed that where recycling is concerned, the only landfill in the Roaring Fork Valley that will accept recycled material, Pitkin County, recently put a cap on the amount of recycled stuff it would take from individual haulers. That forces haulers to take recycled material to other, more distant landfills, which affects everything from fuel consumption to wages for drivers to pollution from truck exhaust pipes.

Another hauler, Don Vandevender of MRI (once known as Mountain Rolloffs, Inc., now called Mountain Refuse, Inc.) shared the concerns mentioned by Bluiss.

“It affects us tremendously,” he said, adding that “we’ve already hit our max” with the Pitkin County dump and are now hauling recycled trash to Eagle County or to the South Canyon dump west of Glenwood Springs.

“It really comes down to human consumption (and) responsibility,” Vandevender continued, suggesting that the only way to improve the recycling situation would be to limit the amount of recycled material

TRTC looking for playwrights The Carbondale-based Thunder River Theatre Company will spotlight a local playwright in its 2014 new play development series. Crank it up The weather was hot but the ice cream and music were cool at last weekend’s 13th annual Mount Sopris Music Fest. The festival, which took place on Friday and Saturday in downtown, was a hit with kids and adults, and gave most everyone a reason to smile. Colorado plan deals with wandering wolves But reintroduction unlikely

By Denise Barkhurst Sopris Sun Correspondent In last week’s article, I ruminated about the remarkable success of the wolf reintroduction program in Idaho’s Frank Church Wilderness and Yellowstone National Park. There are now just over 1,600 wolves throughout Montana, Wyoming and Idaho, and though wolves remain on the federal endangered species list, each of these states has removed state protection. These predators are being kept in limited numbers through hunting tags and loose verification that they, in fact, have been killed for posing a threat to one’s livestock. A stable population of about 1,000 wolves is expected to become the norm for the Northern Rockies.

Wolf behavior is distinct; the animals establish a territory as a pack and then defend that territory from other wolves. Their habitat spreads when a pair moves into a new area, has pups, and a new pack is formed. Packs consist of an average of seven wolves, but can be as large as 15. This is what has happened in Oregon with wolves migrating in from Idaho. Wolves have established new territory in the Cascade Mountains and high eastern plateaus of Oregon; there are now seven packs, totaling 64 wolves. They have also wandered into northeast Washington, with 53 wolves reported in mid 2013.

been so altered that wolf reintroduction cannot possibly reverse the ecological reformation. At a time when global warming is resulting in increasingly warmer temperatures, beetle kill is devastating our forests, and fracking is negatively affecting the winter ranges of migratory wildlife, focusing on wolves as an ecological balancing solution is too simple and distracts from more serious conservation challenges. That being said, data collected over the last 20 years verifies the immense benefits to wildlife populations, stream repair and plant recovery by allowing this top predator to once again become part of the lower 48 states. It is a step closer to balance.

Herrington said he lived on Maroon Drive, a relatively new subdivision at the south end of town. He recalled being kept awake nights for a week, until he got used to it, by the sound of coal trucks pounding past on the nearby Coal Road (also known as Snowmass Drive), a bypass built to take the trucks around town on their way to Mid-Continent’s loading facility on Catherine Store Road.

At that time, he said, Sopris Avenue was the only truly paved street in town, as Main Street was surfaced in chip & seal material.

Coal miners made up a considerable portion of his practice, he said, although not in emergencies. If a miner was seriously injured in those days, Herrington said, the mine’s practice was to “load him into a van and drive as fast as possible to Valley View.”

Once his practice was established, he continued, the van might stop at the clinic building “if the miner was still alive and if it looked like there was somebody there (in the clinic building).”

In fact, Herrington said, he was instrumental in setting up the first true ambulance service for Carbondale and the Crystal River Valley, along with newly hired Mid-Continent safety manager, Rich VanDellen. The two put together a series

Wildlife biologists can predict how wolves will change elk and deer populations based on observations in other states, and even foresee healthier riparian habitats as a benefit, but calculating cultural acceptance is an unknown. The management plan quotes one researcher as speculating that “perhaps no other wildlife species is as affected by human perceptions and attitudes than is the gray wolf.” When wolves arrive here, will we be educated and prepared to share our lands? What will our perceptions be?

By 1976, Herrington had been hard at it as the solo doctor for a couple of years.

“We were so busy my wife told me, ‘You need to find a medical partner or a new wife,’” he remembered with a grin.

Knaus had recently contacted Herrington about a continuing residency at the clinic (Knaus already had finished a residency in Greeley), saying he wanted to return to the Western Slope but not necessarily to Rifle, and by January, 1977 he had moved to Carbondale and housesat for a few months then returned for good in 1978.

In the ensuing years, Herrington and Knaus formed a partnership, naming the clinic Herrington & Knaus, P.C., for a number of years, before switching to Roaring Fork Family Physicians when Spence bought into the business in 1992.

The practice grew steadily over the decades, Knaus told The Sopris Sun, as did the building. There were two expansions, one in 1963 when the Tri-County board added an X-ray room and an exam room, and again in 1999 when it was brought to its current shape and size.

As the building grew, the staff did too, taking on new doctors, new physicians’ as-

sistants, new clerical staff and nurses.

Today, Knaus’s son, Dr. Chad Knaus, who moved to Carbondale as a toddler in 1977 with his dad, also is part of the practice.

All through that time, of course, the patient load grew, too.

Knaus said the practice has 25,000 people in its patient data base (the clinic has been paperless for years, switching to electronic record-keeping long before it became the industry standard).

An audit of the records over the last three years, he said, revealed that the clinic had seen about 10,000 patients over that period.

Knaus acknowledged there is “a little bit of angst in the community about us being part of Valley View,” but added, “the business of medicine is so complex these days, a small mom-and-pop operation just can’t do it.”

For instance, he said, a new X-ray machine to replace the 40-year-old model still in use, would cost as much as $400,000.

The hospital, he said, can absorb many of the functions and costs that a small practice finds impossible to deal with.

But, he stressed, other than the size of the building, increased efficiency and better equipment, the practice is not supposed to change.

“We have no plans to change anything,” he said. “The bottom line is, we’re not raising prices because we’ve moved into a new building.”

The way this works right now is that interested people can sign up with me for a 28-day program of frozen lunches and dinners, which will be stored in a freezer at the Food Co-op and picked up weekly. We have found that committing to a 28-day program is the best way to introduce people to this lifestyle modification.

Most people will be free of their addiction to salt, sugar and fat in two weeks, and in four weeks they will feel so good and will be so happy with their weight, their blood pressure and their numbers (blood glucose, lipids) that they want to find a way to continue the program, either on their own or with some prepared meals. PS’ing Harvey on Surls Dear Editor: I’ll add a PS to Carbondale Trustee Allyn Harvey’s recent writing about the Surls roundabout sculpture: “’Sewing the Future’ is a distinctly modern piece of art that will be a source of inspiration for some and consternation for others. That is, it will join the pantheon of public art installations around the world that get people talking.”

Years ago I went to a lecture by artists Christo and Jean Claude, known for their short-term pieces in the out-of-doors that required years of planning but don’t last very long. Examples are the “Gates” in Central Park in New York, wrapping the Reichstag in Berlin, putting lily pads around islands near Miami, their current “Over the River” project proposed near Salida, and the “Rifle Curtain” at Rifle Gap, which was torn apart by the wind in about 28 hours.

When asked why they would spend years planning a project that would last from hours to a of couple months at most, they said that really the most important part of their art was not the fleeting-end product. The most important thing was that it created conversation, often controversy, about what art really is, where it belongs, what it does to quality of life, and more.

Christo would be tickled about Carbondale. Between the new Art aRound Town sculptures and the upcoming Surls piece, people are talking!!! I hope lots of people, no matter their opinions, come to the July 7 open house at Town Hall at which James Surls will describe how the piece relates to Carbondale and its environment and will tell about his unique vision.

An illustration and description, T-shirts, and the opportunity to donate will also be available at most Carbondale Farmers’ Markets on Wednesdays. May the level of buzz be audible.

Sculpture wears no clothes Dear Editor: Numerous people have approached me and thanked me for helping to initiate a conversation regarding the roundabout and 18 • THE SOPRIS SUN • www.SoprisSun.com • JUly 3, 2014

Surls’ sculpture. Numerous times, locals have voiced dismay that this artwork does not represent Carbondale. They wonder why more people haven’t spoken up. They ask why the public was shut out of the decision process.

They wish we’d had a vote. They say a petition won’t cut it — you have to sign your name to a petition and the proponents of the sculpture have been so good to them, to the entire town that they simply cannot publically speak up. But behind closed curtains, where you can anonymously cast a vote, they assure me they would vote against this particular piece of art.

A couple of prominent locals have likened this situation to the “Emperor’s New Clothes” parable. Perfect analogy. What I see is a crew of archeologists unearthing the sculpture 38,000 years from now and needing a Rosetta Stone to decipher it.

There’s a public meeting scheduled for early July. Let’s all be there. Before it’s too late.

Festival thanks Dear Editor: Carbondale put on a fantastic celebration this last weekend with the 13th annual Mount Sopris Music Fest. Our annual festival presented over 20 hours of great live music thanks to over 100 volunteer musicians who came to the historic, downtown to play for their friends and neighbors. The local music scene just gets better every year and this year’s music lineup raised the bar again. Be sure to thank and support your favorite local musicians every chance you get. They make all our lives better with their musical skills.

The fest was another successful fundraiser for KDNK and its staff and volunteers ran the beverage garden smoothly on two hot summer days and nights. (REMI) found that as a purely fiscal policy, without accounting for potential environmental benefits, this policy would grow GDP 1 percent and create two to three million jobs in its first 20 years. This is career-saving news for Colorado’s House Republicans, including Scott Tipton (District 3, the Western Slope) and Mark Udall’s opponent in the 2014 Senate race, Cory Gardner (District 4, the Eastern Plains).

In difficult economic times, representatives can offer carbon-fee-and-dividend as a boost to districts, without squabbling over whether global warming is real. Republican offices that accept the science are eager to avoid biggovernment spending on cleanup for increas-

2. The roundabout is already decorated with Mount Sopris (or as the Utes call it – “Big Mountain by Two Rivers” because they don’t have the white-man hang-up where we have to name everything after

ourselves for posterity).

3. $200,000 would buy a hell of a lot of art supplies for the local kids who will have to play real-life Frogger whenever they’re trying to get to 7/Eleven for a Slurpee.

Let’s blame it on Mercury in retrograde, or the fact that poop rolls downhill and Aspen’s like a Willy Wonka factory when it comes to poop … whatever the case, it’s not too late to showcase our true colors, and let the roundabout just be about the traffic. As we all know, Carbondale is a great place to be! (Once you actually get here). And I, for one, would like to keep it that way.

Jay says it best: “I believe that bold actions by a few brave people can change the course of history and stabilize the earth’s climate. I believe I am one of those people. Doing this will not be easy or comfortable, but it is definitely possible. And since it is possible, I must try.”

By S. Michael Jundt The logo for Cassie’s Corner Store in Basalt is none other than Cassie herself — a joy-filled Bernese mountain dog who loved the Roaring Fork Valley as much as her owners. Her corner store/gas station/propane outlet is garnering some great attention as a go-to place for locals and tourists alike. And with Clark’s Market closing this month in the same plaza, their timing couldn’t be better.

Jody Dible, Cassie’s general manager, has her pulse on Basalt and the community’s residents.

“With Clark’s leaving, I’m working very hard to fill that void and offer items that other convenience stores don’t have and that local residents deem important,” says Jody. “We provide organic and local whenever possible and we offer gluten-free, wheatfree, and dairy-free options as well. Our coffee is a special blend of locally roasted beans from Rock Canyon Coffee. Our iced tea is freshly brewed Mighty Leaf with hibiscus twist. We have a great selection of cheese, sausage, Italian pastas, olives and spreads, locally raised meat from Aspen Cattle and Kaleb’s Katch of salmon, mahi and cod. Jody — who has been involved in business development, operations and large-scale project management for many years — grew up in a suburb of Phoenix. After a decade

of working for the state’s largest high school athletics fund-raising company, she and three other women formed a wholesale provider business for more than 100 reps across the U.S. and Canada. “The president of the company lived in Snowmass,” says Jody, “so I had been visiting regularly for four years and knew I wanted to spend more time here. When my son began college in 2012 I sold the house we had lived in for 17 years and made the move permanent! “I am so excited about what I call ‘Phase Two’ of my life in Colorado. I’m a serious dog lover with a passion for camping, hiking and mountain biking. I’m also a novice snowboarder — which is a far stretch for a desert rat like myself! My son has plans to move here within the next year or two and I can’t wait for that.”

When asked what sets Cassie’s apart, Jody continues, “It’s our commitment to provide healthier options in a convenience store setting. Every week we are adding more selection, based on our customer’s requests. In the next two to three weeks we’ll have something very exciting that many people have asked for. We’ll have milkshakes, smoothies and frozen cappuccinos. We are really looking forward to this! I am also working to provide fresh grab-and-go items for breakfast, lunch and even dinner.”

Fueled by footstomping music from the Mount Sopris Music Festival, the downtown scene on Saturday night wasn’t exactly like a bull in a china shop, but how about a fake bull near a ceramics studio? Such was the action when the adventurous set climbed onto the mechanical bull set out by the Black Nugget on Fourth Street (far left), while others (left) chose their bowls at the Carbondale Clay Center’s Cajun Clay Night fund-raiser.

More than 200 handthrown bowls found new homes at Cajun Clay and more than half of the six-foot alligator cake was consumed. As for the bull riders, no word on how many climbed on board but this contestant was the reported winner.

We are pleased to present to you this year's water quality report. Our constant goal is to provide you with a safe and dependable supply of drinking water. General Information All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk.

More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791) or by visiting http://water.epa.gov/drink/contaminants.

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population.

Immunocompromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV-AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk of infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, or to receive a copy of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and microbiological contaminants call the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (1-800-426-4791).

The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: Microbial contaminants: viruses and bacteria that may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

Inorganic contaminants: salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming.

Pesticides and herbicides: may come from a variety of sources, such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses.

Radioactive contaminants: can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

Organic chemical contaminants: including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are byproducts of industrial processes and petroleum production, and also may come from gas stations, urban storm water runoff, and septic systems.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, the Colorado Department of

Public Health and Environment prescribes regulations limiting the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. The Food and Drug Administration regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water that must provide the same protection for public health.

Lead in Drinking Water If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems (especially for pregnant women and young children). It is possible that lead levels at your home may be higher than other homes in the community as a result of materials used in your home's plumbing. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking.

Additional information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-4264791) or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Source Water Assessment and Protection (SWAP) The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has provided us with a Source Water Assessment Report for our water supply. For general information or to obtain a copy of the report please visit http://wqcdcompliance.com/ccr. The report is located under Source Water Assessment Reports , and then Assessment Report by County . Select GARFIELD County and find 123167; CARBONDALE TOWN OF or by contacting MARK O'MEARA at 970963-3140. The Source Water Assessment Report provides a screening-level evaluation of potential contamination that could occur. It does not mean that the contamination has or will occur. We can use this information to evaluate the need to improve our current water treatment capabilities and prepare for future contamination threats. This can help us ensure that quality finished water is delivered to your homes. In addition, the source water assessment results provide a starting point for developing a source water protection plan. Potential sources of contamination in our source water area are listed on the next page.

Bidder must include CDOT forms 606 and 714 with his bid, forms 605, 621, and 718 the following day and form 715 within 48 hours of bid opening. If a work schedule is included as part of the bid package it must also be completed in ink and signed by the individual who will execute the Contract Form. Any work form completed as part of the bid package shall indicate the commencement date for construction. The work schedule must conform to the commencement and completion dates for the contract.
