Music fest thanks Dear Editor: Many thanks to the 16 local musical acts who provided us with over 20 hours of free live music in Carbondale last weekend.

The 15th annual Mount Sopris Music Fest was a musical blast for downtown Carbondale, starting on Friday night at 5 p.m. with Valle Musico. They were followed by Let Them Roar, Saddle the Unicorn and The Starlettes for over four hours of beautiful live music. A great opening night and the fest continued all day Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. with 10 more great local acts volunteering

their musical services for the town.

Thanks to: Patrick Fagan, Jim Hawkins, Mack Bailey, Wally Bacon, Ritchie Marx and Don, Natalie Spears and Aly, Dave Taylor and Lyn Byars, The Nanograms, Steve Skinner and the Thompson Dividers, Vid Weatherwax, The 4 a.m. Band and Natural Transfusion.

It was another wonderful celebration of our vibrant and growing local musical community. We could not make this annual music fest happen without the town of Carbondale, KDNK and our many sponsors and volunteers.

It’s a beautiful thing to enjoy free live music on the town plaza with your friends and neighbors. The weather was hot, the soundman was good, the food from Señor Taco was tasty, the drinks were cold and delicious from KDNK, and the musicians made some gorgeous live music for all of us. Another wonderful free-music fest in little old Carbondale.

Life is like a video game When you get to be middle-aged, it’s disconcerting because you’re in the prime of your life, but for the first time you can see the other side of the hill (and the finish line).

It’s weird to look around at your friends and realize you’ve all entered the next age bracket. And your conversations inevitably turn to the body: energy levels, aches and pains that were never there before, the advantage of having a child around to fetch things off the floor … joint and back pains take the place of wild road trips and crazy late-night antics. The old cliché is true; just as you mentally start to figure out what it really means to win in life; your body begins to show signs of defeat. In these conversations, as everyone bellyaches about their pain and loathing, someone always pipes up with, “Well, it beats the alternative.” To which I say, “Does it?

Does it really?”

Is our fear of the unknown so strong that we would rather choose pain and suffering? Not me. I prefer a sudden death to spending years immobile or worse, in constant pain. I’m pretty sure I know how I’m going to die and it will be sudden. According to the palm reader at Mountain Fair, my pancreas could “flare up” while I’m driving, which I take to mean I’ll die in a car crash. There was something about the way

Probably my favorite thing about this life is that no one knows what happens when we die, and yet everyone subscribes to one theory or another. Butch moving his lobster shack to C’dale

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer It looks as though Basalt’s loss will be Carbondale’s gain, as plans jell for the opening of Butch’s Lobster Shack on a now-vacant lot at the corner of Second and Main streets, possibly within a couple of weeks.

Butch Darden, who has been in the restaurant business in the Roaring Fork Valley since 1979, confirmed to The Sopris Sun on Monday that he has reached an agreement to lease the lot, owned by Bren Simon, that until recently was occupied by a construction trailer linked to the development of the Marble Distilling Company and Distillery Inn. The distillery is located two doors east on Main from the Lobster Shack’s planned site.

Darden said he has not dealt directly with Simon, but has been working through an intermediary. Simon is the widow of the late billionaire Mel Simon, shopping center developer from Indiana, who owns a house just outside Carbondale and reportedly lists the town as home to the Melvin and Bren Simon Foundation.

The Lobster Shack, which operated in Basalt from about 2003 until last year, ran into trouble earlier this year when the Basalt Downtown Business Association haggled with Darden over his continued use of his site, which is where the town's former recycling center was located.

Just as that problem seemed to be reaching a resolution, which would have allowed Darden to reopen for the summer season, the Eagle County Health Department informed him that his restaurant was considered a permanent structure rather than a self-contained food wagon, and required him to spend approximately $7,000 for a sewer hookup, according to published reports.

Darden balked, noting that he had spent a considerable amount of money upgrading his mobile shack and eating area last year.

When the Basalt town council last week voted against helping him out with the sewer hookup, he backed away from further involvement and started looking elsewhere, Darden told The Sopris Sun. A friend suggested he consider the Simon lot (in Carbondale), he said, and the deal was hatched.

Now, all that remains is to get his paperwork taken care of with the town, which he said should be “soon, probably within 10 days.”

The menu Darden said he will be offering the same menu as he has historically, which includes such seafood delicacies as shrimp, fried clams, calamari, lobster rolls, crab cakes, oysters on the half shell, clam chowder, clams on the half shell, Maine lobsters, and possibly the return of king crabs.

Noting that he has had some recent success with broiled dishes, he said he plans to continue in that vein, offering both fried and broiled dishes depending on customer tastes.

And the king crab?

“I might be offering king crab, because it’s coming down in price,” he said, noting that in recent years the price of red king crab climbed so high he would end up selling it for just what he paid for it, without making any profit.

Darden said he has been checking out Carbondale and likes what he sees, particularly the proximity between his lot and the nearby distillery.

“Whatever can draw people down to that area can certainly benefit everyone down there,” he said of the east end of Main Street.

“And I think I’ll draw some people, too,” he added, a reference to the popularity of his cuisine starting with a small oyster bar in the legendary Tippler bar in Aspen in 1979, and the loyal customer base that moved with him when he ran Butch's Lobster Bar in Snowmass Village for 18 years.

Carbondale too hot to crack-seal Sopris Sun Staff Report The ambient air temperature in Carbondale got so hot one day last week that the streets crew had to abandon a crack-sealing project because the sealing material would not set, according to the weekly memo on town events and issues written by Town Manager Jay Harrington.

Still, Harrington reported, a paving crew finished paving a ripped up section of Rock Court, where the town dug out some clay from beneath a sunken part of the street.

The street crew also performed maintenance on a drywell on Sopris Avenue, where the drywell had become “packed with tree roots seven feet deep,” Harrington wrote.

The parks crew has a new, seasonal employee for the summer, Harrington reported, and is busy with its schedule of mowing, picking up trash, irrigation-system repairs and maintaining dog-waste stations.

The parks crew also installed several new trees at Miner’s Park last week, pruned trees throughout town and kept up the removal of elm tree saplings in the right of way on Cowen Drive and other spots around town.

Harrington reported that Western States Reclamation finished putting down grass seed and straw matting along the Highway 133 corridor through town, and cautioned local motorists that the ongoing Highway 133 repair and maintenance program, between Carbondale and Redstone, is continuing on weekdays.

Area architect Tim Hagman is working with the town on two projects — designing a bleacher roof for the Gus Darien Riding Arena on Catherine Store Road, and designing a shelter for the Carbondale Community Oven at the south end of the Third Street Center property.

Town staff members attended an event called Mountain Rural Philanthropy held in Rifle last week. The conference

happens every four years and is a gathering of executive directors, experts in certain topics, and state and local government officials, who talk about ways to obtain foundation funding for non-profit programs in a five-county region — Garfield, Eagle, Summit, Lake and Pitkin.

In recreation news, the town is looking for individuals interested in joining the “Over The Hill” hiking group for a hike up Hunter Creek Trail on July 6. Contact the recreation department, at www.carbondalerec.com, for information.

The Gateway RV Park usage numbers for the week of June 20-26 showed 140 booked nights for an occupancy rate of more than 81 percent. Reservations for this week indicated 54 people in 25 sites so far.

And Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling was chosen “Best Law Enforcement Officer” in a recent Local’s Choice poll, conducted by a newspaper in Glenwood Springs.

For the upcoming July 4 weekend, the town has a number of events and programs planned, including First Friday Chalk Art on July 3 in the 4th Street Plaza, with a theme of “What Freedom Means To Me.” Chalk art board and chalk will be available at the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center, and the artworks will be presented at the First Friday concert that day in the 4th Street Plaza as well as over the weekend at the rec center.

On July 4, the annual kids’ parade down Main Street will get underway at 10:30 a.m. (parade staging starts at 10 a.m. at the corner of 2nd and Main), ending at Sopris Park. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the park, there will be food booths, kids games, a bounce house, free watermelon, free ice cream sandwiches and live music by Dave Taylor at the north end of the park.

The John M. Fleet Municipal Pool will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with discounted entry fees of $5.

Cop Shop From June 18-25, Carbondale officers handled 258 calls for service. During this period, officers investigated the following cases of note:

FRIDAy, June 19: Shortly after midnight, police responded to a report of an attempted burglary in progress at the Crystal Meadows senior housing complex on Hendrick Drive. A man described as wearing a white ball cap reportedly was trying to get the screen off a window when the resident was awakened by the noise and apparently scared the intruder off. Police are continuing their investigation and asking that anyone who knows anything about the suspect call 963-2662. In the meantime, citizens are being cautioned to keep their home, windows and vehicles locked.

SATURDAy, June 20: At 3:36 a.m. police were called to a motel about a woman who reportedly had no money to pay for her hotel room. The 21-year-old woman turned out to be an escort working out of Denver, police reported, who claimed she had been abandoned by her client. She allegedly bit an officer during a struggle, and was arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer and possession of methamphetamine. The officer was treated and released for the injury and is expected to make a full recovery.

SATURDAy, June 20: At 10:24 a.m., police were called to a store about an alleged shoplifter. A 19-year-old Carbondale woman was arrested and ticketed on a charge of petty theft.

MONDAy, June 22: At 3:15 p.m. police investigated a reported violation of a protective order by an inmate at the Garfield County Jail. The investigation concluded that an inmate had illegally placed a phone call to the protected party, and charged him with misdemeanor-level violation.

WEDNESDAy, June 24: At 10:25 p.m. police took a report of harassment, from a man who said some males were giving him the finger and “making dog noises toward him.” The case is under investigation.

Teens Giving Back to Carbondale all summer long

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer Denise Wright says “There’s nothing more powerful than a group of kids with an idea.”

Wright should know. The Roaring Fork High School teacher has worked with kids for years. This summer, she is the part-time coordinator for a new student-driven group called Teens Giving Back (TGB), which volunteers at CARE, Heritage Park and other public and private organizations. Just this week, TGB volunteers helped pull weeds at North Face Bike Park, part of an on-going project so the town won’t have to spray the invasive plants.

“Kids are some of the most generous people you’ll ever meet,” Wright told The Sopris Sun. “They love giving back.”

Pre-collegiate mentor Bill Lamont hatched the Teens Giving Back idea with Carbondale Middle School students at the start of last school year. Getting to where they are today was a year long effort. “We met every Wednesday,” said TGB member Kendall Bernot. Not only did the students meet weekly, they took on some tasks that would require quite a bit of work even if they were adults. This included writing letters to the Carbondale Board of Trutees, and Parks and Recreation Commission, asking for the town to fund a part-time coordinator. Bernot said Isabella DeCano and “Gabby” Santana were the official spokespersons when they appeared before the trustees. Other TGB volunteers created and presented a Power Point presentation.

The students must have been persuasive, because the trustees funded their request for the summer of 2015.

Outdoor Volunteers youth program. Part of this developmental phase included distributing a survey to high school and middle school students. About half of the respondents in each school said they were interested in participating in TGB. There was a little difference between the two schools when asked why they are interested in getting involved. High school responses included “college admission, community service and giving back to the community.” Middle school responses included “to be with friends, get out of the house, something to do.”

Rescue (CARE) near the CMC Spring Valley campus was an early supporter. Later this summer they plan to help build an outdoor learning center at Crystal River Elementary School.

Each TGB member fills out a one-page application that asks for an emergency contact phone number, interests/hobbies the students have, days they are available and whether they prefer working indoors or outdoors. About 25 students are currently involved with TGB. The group does not have an office and Wright communicates with most of the members via the Internet and social media.

Bernot said the summer work year has just started, “But we hope to do it again next year.”

Local and federal officials are reminding everyone that it’s illegal to shoot off fireworks in national parks and forests, and on BLM land. “If (a) fire can be traced back to an individual or group then that group or individual can be held responsible,”Vallario said in a press release. “This may include the loss of property, injuries to fellow citizens or first responders as well as the costs to the fire district associated with mitigating the fire. In the extreme case of a fire resulting in a death the consequences can be severe.” As to what constitutes legal and illegal fireworks, Vallario said “If it goes bang or leaves the ground, it’s illegal.”

Carrie Vickers was the overall women’s winner at last week’s Aspen Backcountry Marathon, while Laurie Guevara-Stone won in her age group (40-plus). Vickers covered the course in 4 hours, 32 minutes and was 21st out of 124 runners. Word has it she and other runners saw “a big bear” at the top of Smuggler.

Let’s go hiking The Wilderness Workshop’s Sarah Johnson leads a day hike into Thompson Divide along the Marion Gulch trail on July 11. Let’s go biking Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) crews were scheduled to reopen the entire Glenwood Canyon bike path on June 30, according to a press release. A stretch in the middle part of the canyon has been closed for several weeks due to high waters on the Colorado River. Rainbow Gathering update You might remember The Sopris Sun was probably the first local newspaper to report the location for the 2015 Rainbow Gathering, except it wasn’t the exact location because the unofficial tribe’s official unofficial website said the event would take place in either: Minnesota, New Hampshire, Vermont, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois or South Dakota. It turns out the “winning” location is the Black Hills National Forest in South Dakota. The Rainbow website (welcomehome.org/rainbow) starts its directions from Rapid City, then on to Hill City, and ending up Forest Road 294 near Deerfield Lake. The counter-culture gathering, now in its 33-year, typically attracts about 20,000 people, according to published reports. It more or less kicks in on July 3 with a cyberspace circle to discuss related issues, continues with a drum circle for peace on July 4 then goes from there.

If you’ve ever wondered whether library story-time for toddlers/preschoolers mixes with planting a garden, the answer is yes (in GarďŹ eld County, anyway). Working with Fat City Farmers, story-time comes ďŹ rst inside the libraries with gardenthemed songs and rhymes, such as “This is the way we dig our hole, dig our hole, dig our hole ‌ .â€? Next, the kids and parents go outside and actually dig a hole to plant a tomato, pepper or other tasty vegetable. On June 24 in Carbondale, the children planted garden containers (provided by the Kitchen Community) at the corner of Third Street and Sopris Avenue. Through the summer, kids and families will listen to more stories, water the garden and pull weeds. Come August, they will have one story-time to make salsa and one to make pizza. “It’s a pretty fun way to combine colorful children’s stories, singing and dancing with tasty food,â€? said a library spokeswoman. “This program cultivates children’s taste buds for healthy food along with a love for libraries and stories. It seems very wise to call our libraries ‘branches,’ as they are all forming a tree of knowledge right in the heart of our communities.â€?

“Smart Meter” debate continues on the E-Board

The local fight over Smart Meters took an unusual turn this week, when Carbondale’s Environmental Board got a look at the question of whether the growing amount of atmospheric electromagnetic radiation [EM] is linked to the disappearance of honey bees and the disorientation of migratory birds as well as potentially posing a health hazard to humans.

Carbondale residents Jody Powell and Cedar Rose, along with visiting activist Gary Duncan from Pagosa Springs, Colorado, believe the links are real and told the E-Board members the connections should be viewed as warnings signs of electromagnetic pollution that is threatening wildlife as well as human health.

But members of the E-Board, as it is known, were not quite so sure, and asked Powell and Rose to work with the board’s subcommittee on Energy & Transportation to come up with a recommendation that the E-Board can consider.

At issue is the recent news that Holy Cross Energy, the electric utility co-operative that serves much of Carbondale, plans on installing what Holy Cross calls its “enhanced metering system” on the exteriors of local homes. The new meters are meant to replace the old, “analog” meters with revolving wheels showing the rate of power usage by a household.

The other utility serving Carbondale, Xcel, had openly initiated an experimental program involving installation of “smart meters” in the city of Boulder, Colorado, starting in 2007, known as “SmartGridCity” and touted as a new way of managing power usage and providing data that would ultimately mean lower usage and lower costs to consumers.

But the program ran into problems that included resistance from people with concerns similar to those expressed by Powell, Rose and Duncan.

Costs ballooned to $44.5 million, which was to be partly offset by the utility’s statewide customer base, and the program never truly got off the ground, according to a 2012 ar-

ticle in The Denver Post.

Along the way, doubters began questioning the veracity of the utility’s claims, and began unearthing information about human health problems blamed on the smart meters, fires in homes they said were believed to be caused by the smart meters, and other problems.

An Xcel official, at a meeting in late May with the Carbondale trustees, maintained that the utility currently has no intention of trying the same thing in Carbondale as it tried in Boulder.

And Holy Cross officials at the same meeting stressed that the meters they are planning to install are not the same as the “smart meters” that have generated controversy and concern in other parts of the country and the world.

But those who feel the new meters pose a threat to the health, safety and welfare of the citizenry remain on the offensive.

At Monday’s E-Board meeting Powell, who is a naturopathic health practitioner in Carbondale, spoke of the cumulative effects of EM, the growing amount of EM radiation locally, nationally and internationally, and of a growing number of people who turn off their cell phones and other personal electronic devices to avoid constant exposure.

She also said she and Rose have tried but failed to obtain exact information about the EM frequencies that would be broadcast by the new meters, as a way of gauging whether the technology would pose health risks.

“We are hitting a wall,” she told the E-Board.

That was one reason, Powell said, that she and the others were at the E-Board meeting — to enlist the help of a quasiofficial board with the city’s sanction behind it, to get more information from the utilities.

Duncan, who said he was diagnosed with hypersensitivity to EM radiation and certain chemicals 24 years ago, has been working to stop the installation of smart meters for more than two decades.

He, Powell and Rose provided numerous articles about an

international movement dedicated to such resistance, from the Netherlands in Europe to Australia.

The articles, which can be obtained from town records, describe scientific findings that the EM radiation is contributing or causing the collapse of beehives around the world, and that the radiation has been linked to erratic flights of migratory birds because the radiation interferes with the natural guiding mechanisms in the species affected.

Duncan also directed the E-Board members to check into resistance efforts in California, where some “smart-meter” programs have ended up in court over charges that the utilities involved were basing their programs on invalid or insufficient research and threatening the health of their customers.

“We are asking the board to work with us,” Rose told the E-Board members, explaining that she and her partners lack the clout to force the utilities to give up needed information.

In addition to the doubts and concerns about the new technology, Duncan told the board members, “The smart meter program is in a state of collapse,” due in part to the determination of detractors to root out information disproving the claims of the industry.

The members of the E-Board seemed disposed to go along with the request for assistance, although they were not prepared to do so on Monday night.

Instead, they asked that Powell and Rose work with the subcommittee, first by providing the subcommittee members with information about the issue, and with questions that could be put to Holy Cross.

“It’s real easy to go down the rabbit hole in some of these discussions,” board chair Jeff Lauckhart told The Sopris Sun on Tuesday. “I think the board is kind of unsure about the science.”

He said the subcommittee, which is made up of Lauckhart and members Chris Ellis and Scott Mills, will be meeting with Powell and Rose over the coming weeks, and may have a report for the full E-Board by its regular meeting in late July.

First Friday and July 4: Cutting through the confusion

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer Every seven years or so, Carbondale is blessed, or challenged, by more entertainment options than most other towns can boast.

We’ve got First Friday on July 3, followed by the Fourth of July. Most of us are vaguely aware both celebrations have some things in common and some not. “Let’s see ‌ Main Street closed Friday night so folks can wander around without getting run over ‌ Main Street packed with kids parading their decorated bikes and dogs on Saturday morning ‌ music ‌ stuff in the park ‌ music ‌ chalk art ‌ free watermelon ‌ music ‌ folks hanging out with friends.â€?

First Friday precedes the Fourth of July by just one day, and yet, July 2 was Thursday — which is rodeo night. It’s enough to make a sane person go dizzy.

Most working folks have July 3 off for the Fourth of July, and some will no doubt kick off the weekend at various times on Thursday (July 2) or Friday (July 3) and continue until some time Saturday night — or Sunday morning (July 5).

Some events you’d think are up, are really down. Take, for example, Fourth of July aerial ďŹ reworks. For the third or fourth or ninth straight year, the ďŹ re district will not shoot Roman candles and such up into the air for all to “ooooâ€? and “ahhhhâ€? at. However, actual orange and yellow ames will play an important part in festivities, thanks to the return of the Dance of the Sacred Fire

show down on the ground. And when do you recon folks will gather around at Fourth Street Plaza to marvel at the show? On the Fourth of July? No. During First Friday, on July 3.

If you weren’t confused by what’s happening on Friday as opposed to Saturday, you might be by now. So, here are some quick-key reference points: First Friday is oriented toward late afternoon and evening activities downtown; Fourth of July (Saturday) is more of a morning to mid-afternoon thing in Sopris Park.

For a more precise schedule of events, here you go:

First Friday Downtown Main Street will be closed to vehicular trafďŹ c from 5 to 9 p.m. During that time, chalk artists are invited to create their own masterpieces on Carbondale’s biggest canvas, which includes not only Main Street but also the sidewalks.

Basalt Summer ArtsBeat debuts in Lions Park Sopris Sun Staff Report Basalt Summer ArtsBeat will debut in Lions Park on July 8 and will run every Wednesday evening through Aug. 12 with live musical performances by local and regional groups, art projects powered by The Wyly Art Center, and special promotions from participating usinesses.

Word has it anticipation for the musical lineup has been brewing ever since the free concert series was announced.

“The Bo Hale Treatment, a classic rock band, kicks off Basalt Summer ArtsBeat on July 8,” said Marc Breslin, event organizer. “Then, Crowlin Ferlies, a Celtic bluegrass group, is slated to perform on July 15. We’re bringing back some local favorites this year and adding a few accomplished bands from outside the valley to the lineup.”

The concert schedule is as follows: • July 8 – The Bo Hale Treatment (classic rock); • July 15 – Crowlin Ferlies (Celtic bluegrass); • July 22 – The Starletts (Motown/soul);

Maybe you want to socialize while your acupuncture points are being stimulated. Or, like most, maybe you just want to relax and be quiet during your treatment.

At Colorado Community Acupuncture you have the opportunity to be needled in the company of others or alone.

Acupuncturist and Chinese medicine practitioner Annie Van Druten practiced acupuncture at a community acupuncture clinic in Columbus, Ohio, before moving to Carbondale a little over a year ago. Because she feels strongly about the idea of offering affordable acupuncture she decided to offer community acupuncture right here in Carbondale and opened her office on Village Road.

She modeled her practice after the clinic in Ohio as well as acupuncture clinics in China, where she said “patients are treated in a community setting. Each person receives individualized treatment, and several people receive treatments each hour, allowing practitioners to make it more affordable.”

Van Druten’s office contains three Lazy Boy-style chairs located in a light, comfortable room with windows, so the natural light can filter through. Community treatments are offered on a sliding scale, so within the established parameters the patient decides how much he or she wants to pay for treatment. Van Druten’s sliding scale for community treatments is from $30 to $50 with a one-time $10 consultation fee.

Appointments usually last anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes. Private sessions are also available for a set fee.

Van Druten is licensed and certified in acupuncture.

In addition to the requirements needed for licensing, she also completed more than three years of post-graduate study in an accredited school of Chinese medicine in New York, which qualifies her to offer additional modalities that go hand in hand with acupuncture.

These modalities are only done in private sessions and include things like a type of heat therapy called moxibustion and gua sha, which is a scraping of the skin with a blunt object bringing blood to the surface to encourage healing. Cupping therapy is another type of treatment offered in which heated cups are placed on painful areas so that the skin is essentially sucked into the cup, helping to pull out toxins and stimulate the lymphatic system. She also works with essential oils.

“Essential oil application on the spine and feet promotes healing and reduces pain and inflammation. It reduces stress and boosts the immune system,” she said, adding that she uses them as her personal medicine cabinet.

When clients begin treatment, Van Druten encourages them to come more often. “We want to build on progress, and with repeated treatments in a short period of time, patients achieve the best results. After that initial period of healing, they can back off and come in less frequently for maintenance and tune-ups.”

  of Carbondale’s Wagner Rents, that solved our biggest challenge — how to move these massive pieces of student work out into the community for others to enjoy. On the ďŹ rst hot day in June, Wagner’s own Gary Oliver worked with us to place four pieces out into the community. The lucky recipients of our (co)studio students’ high quality work were Two Rivers Community School in west Glenwood and the KDNK radio station in Carbondale.  Due to these three generous supporters, our students’ work will be enjoyed for years by many.

Tick Ridge communication site draws CRMS attention

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The Carbondale Fire District is in the midst of talks with Colorado Rocky Mountain School, a private prep school just outside of town, about the fate of a communications facility located on school property on Tick Ridge, an up thrust that separates the Crystal River Valley from the Thompson Creek drainage to the west of town.

According to school and ďŹ re district ofďŹ cials, the facility provides radio-repeater service for the ďŹ re department and the Carbondale Public Works Department, as well as broadcast capabilities for Skybeam Communications, an Internet service provider that does business in Colorado, Wyoming and Texas.

Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling, who also serves as the chair of the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District board of directors, said this week that he does not believe the negotiations represent much of a problem at this point.

In particular, he said, it is not likely that the ďŹ re district will lose the right to use the facility, which relays radio signals from the main ďŹ re house to crews and facilities in remote areas to the north and west.

But, Schilling conceded, “There always is that possibility.�

Attorneys for the different parties, including Eric Gross for the ďŹ re district, Mark Hamilton for the town and Chad Lee for the school, will be working on a lease for the property, which is the basis of the school’s concerns about the arrangement, according to CMRS business manager Joe White.

In an e-mail this week to The Sopris Sun, White wrote that the issues regarding use of the property by the ďŹ re district and the town date back to the 1990s, when GarďŹ eld County ceased operations of its transmitter network and “someone at the county told the town and/or the ďŹ re district that they could use the site and the tower (on CRMS property).â€?

He said that there is no lease for the use of the property, stressing that “neither the town or the ďŹ re district presently have legal right to use the site.â€?

He wrote that the school has been informed that the ďŹ re district hopes to continue using the site, “and we intend to facilitate that use. Whether Skybeam remains is uncertain.â€?

As for the town of Carbondale, Town Manager Jay Harrington told The Sopris Sun that the town has mainly moved to using digital communications through the cable networks that serve Carbondale. “The town used to depend on the wireless network, and we’re not so much now,� Harrington explained. “Our interest is pretty modest.�

Schilling said the police no longer need to use the CRMS site, although he said the police department may want to maintain its right to use some equipment there for emergencies such as when telecommunications went out of service recently after a cable was cut by crews digging trenches near Glenwood Springs. “I believe it’s something that the powers that be can work out,� Schilling concluded.

White concurred, writing in an e-mail, “We’re happy to help out where it makes sense.�
