Folks in Sopris Park on Friday afternoon (June 24) were treated to a stellar slacklining demonstration, thanks to RJ Roush, who was visiting friends here. Roush and his friend, Chalese, strung one line for him and one for her. His line extended about 100 feet from a tree next to the ditch, to another sturdy tree on the north side of the park.

Puy–nie–ne … is a (phonetically-spelled) Northern Ute word for “open your eyes” according to Clifford Duncan, a Northern Ute elder.

Imagine the Crystal River Valley is your ancestral home. All that you see around you are your relatives. The birds. The animals.

The trees. The sky. Life was a circle that included all creation equally.

Ute family bands or groups were usually small, a dozen or so, Clifford said.

“The Utes were on foot; it took a long time to go from place to place. They moved around faster, easier after we got horses from the Spaniards.”

While they had a tendency to stay apart one band from one another, come autumn, Ute families would pack up and travel south and west to gather together in what is called today the Four Corners area of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. There, they met up with their distant relations, including the Aztecas (my ancestors) from southern Mexico and Central America, to enjoy Father Sun’s winter warmth. They traded and socialized, communicating in what became known to Anglo linguistic scholars as the Uto-Aztecan language.

Living large The Utes believed they were closest to the Creator when in the high mountains. Clifford explained that Utes learned to live in harmony with each other by watching Nature. “When Nature completely controls, it will also provide you with every means to survive. Nature is closer to God,” he said.

“Nature can take the place of a teacher in a regular school setting. It does not teach you, but opens your eyes to see. Nature provides guidance. Nature is a disciple of Creator. It works for God. God does not work alone. God has many providers and Nature is her main teacher.”

Clifford continued, “God is first, second is Nature, then Man. God created you. Nature teaches you. Then you become what you are. That’s how I see it.”

Thus, from the Utes’ perspective, all was well in these mountains — until one day in the late 1870s when white surveyors first pressed in from the east. To this valley they came; from over what became the Crested Butte side of the mountains into the future towns of Gothic, Crystal City and on down into Marble.

Photo by Charlotte Graham time locals” knew change had come to their world. They just didn’t know how quickly it would change into a world they could have never imagined.

One man’s “riches” “The first impression of the white people by the observing Indian was, ‘Why do you tear it up? That’s my Mother Earth,’” Clifford said. They couldn’t understand why miners scratched gouges in the earth, clearcut trees, dynamited holes, poisoned creeks and rivers, and even killed one another looking for certain rocks and minerals they called “silver” and “gold.” Even more confusing to the native people was that all this decimation was called “riches” by the newcomer.

“I’ve struck it rich!” they’d exclaim.

“The Indian was basing his viewpoint on the fact that the Earth gave him life,” Clifford explained. “Everything was part of a plan. Nothing was wasted. Nature provided him the closeness of God. When a man tears up another person’s altar, you are naturally going to say, ‘That’s not right.’

And you are going to fight that. Nature is a picture of God and that is what the Utes were defending.”

The Ute Wayute way The Utes lived so lightly on this land.

They created the concept of ecology long before that word was birthed. Thus, evidence of their thousands of years of habitation was routinely reclaimed by Nature with relative ease. Because they migrated out of the mountains during the winter, it didn’t take long before the Ute homeland was declared “uninhabited.” In the minds of the newcomers, this rich, beautiful land was here for the taking.

Suddenly, Ute family clans were no longer free to roam between their summer and winter camps. In 1880, after the Meeker incident in 1879, Utes were corralled at military gunpoint and forced to march some 100 to a reservation at Fort Duchesne, Utah.

For the First People, not only the manner of life, but the words of their white brothers were hard to reconcile with their actions.

What the Indian saw were inexplicable, irreversible, devastating actions with little, if any regard for all other of God’s creatures.

Turns out, this was to be the way for a long time in the circle of life between indigenous and immigrant Americans.

Clifford explained how the “circular” or “Indian way” of thinking is compared to his white brother’s thinking when it came to exchanging for goods and services.

“Tangible, or hard money, replaced that intangible value [of communal service] by setting ‘value’ based on one’s possession of gold and silver that came out from Mother Earth. To the Indian, though, no less valuable was the Ute’s way of exchange for what each other needed that came from the same Mother Earth but with respect and honor.”

Somewhere along the way, as Utes understood, the “material-over-natural” way of thinking disconnected them from God. In less than a dozen years, a centuries-old utopian civilization was removed from its ancestral land by broken promises, broken treaties and broken traditions of a onceabundantly rich social, cultural and spiritual life and … mostly forgotten.

His eyesight may be failing, but he swivels in his creaky leather office chair to point out photos of his accomplishments: the Calaway/Young Cancer Center, the James C. and Connie L. Calaway Academic Building at the Spring Valley Campus of Colorado Mountain College, Colorado Animal Rescue, Thunder River Theatre Company, and the Third Street Center.

The well-designed edifices in the photos prove how Calaway’s financial commitments have come to fruition, but his generosity extends further into the lives of valley residents who pass through any of those doors. At Thunder River Theater, Calaway was not just a Building Founder, but along with Connie the Calaways have served as season producers for several seasons of theatre. The Third Street Center’s facility is almost 50 years old but thanks to renovations and Calaway’s work as a mentor, executive director Colin Laird says the building hosts community activity around the clock, from business space for nonprofits to afternoon programing for children, and theater and concerts at night.

Calaway is a member of the Carbondale Unitarian Congregation, which meets in the Third Street Center’s main meeting room, the Calaway room, along with Carbondale residents Sue Edelstein and Bill Spence.

“Jim is a great listener with a sense of humor who cares deeply about his friends and is modest in his lifestyle,” says Edelstein. “Jim shows great respect to his friends and makes great effort to keep up with them,” adds Spence. “He is a great observer of human nature and easily shares

these insights.”

At Colorado Mountain College, his support is evidenced by the namesake academic building. He has also underwritten scholarships for nearly 100 students, founded the CMC Board of Overseers, and joined together CMC and the Aspen Institute to create the Isaacson School for New Media.

“Jim Calaway is a leader of leaders,” says CMC President and CEO Carrie Hauser. “He shares his wisdom and financial support generously and encourages others to do the same. Jim has challenges to his friends and others to support community causes, however they can.”

As someone who has experienced the dichotomy between wealth and poverty, Calaway feels that that public donations can influence others to help bridge that gap, rather than anonymous giving. He says he has never had a problem challenging friends to donate time and money to local organizations. As a result, Bob Young, chairman and founder of Alpine Bank — and co-namesake of the Calaway/Young Cancer Center — refers to Calaway as “the most expensive friend I’ve ever had.”

“Jim is definitely the type of philanthropist that encourages open giving. In doing so, his leadership has a strong influence on others,” Young said. “It also has a way of giving greater credibility for the charities that Jim supports.”

One of those nonprofits is Colorado Animal Rescue (CARE). “I do feel that his extreme generosity inspires others in the community to be more philanthropic,” says CALAWAY page 7

Seniors go hiking up Hunter Creek Sopris Sun Staff Report From the recreation department comes word that the first Senior Programming hike of the summer took hikers up Avalanche Creek recently, and the next one is scheduled for July 11 up Hunter Creek Trail near Aspen. In his weekly report, Town Manager Jay Harrington said there are still some spots open for additional hikers. The cost is $25 per hike, and registration is available through the town website (www.carbondalerec.com) or by calling the recreation department at 510-1290.

In other items from Harrington’s weekly report, Carbondale’s festival season gets its official start this weekend with the 15th annual Mt. Sopris Music Fest, sponsored by Steve’s Guitars, scheduled July 1, in conjunction with the community’s monthly First Friday celebration, and July 4 in conjunction with, well, the Fourth of July celebration.

This represents a change in the Mt. Sopris Music Fest’s scheduling, which has previously involved back-to-back entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. This year, it will be held at the 4th Street Plaza and park at the corner of 4th and Main Streets from 5-10 p.m. on Friday and from noon to 9 p.m. on

Monday at Sopris Park.

Also planned for the Fourth of July weekend is the annual parade and pool party.

The kid’s parade starts at 10:30 a.m. and will follow the traditional route down from 2nd and Main, down Main Street ending at Sopris Park at about 11 a.m.

From that point on, the park will feature a variety of food booths, kid’s games, free ice cream and watermelon, and music. The swimming pool will be open for the festivities, at discounted entry fees, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The long-delayed plan to put a roof over the grandstand bleachers at the Gus Darien Riding Arena, home to Carbondale’s Wild West Rodeos every Thursday through the summer, appears to be moving forward. Town Manager Jay Harrington noted in his June 24 memo to trustees and other recipients that a request for proposals from construction contractors is being advertised this week. An e-mail bid package, including project manuals and drawings, is available from recreation director Jeff Jackel at 510-1214. Sealed bids are due to the town by 1 p.m. on Aug. 9, according to Harington’s memo.

Town street crews have been busy pouring a concrete “valley pan” on Colorado, with plans to repair the asphalt surface next, and repairing a sinkhole on Crystal Road.

Harrington reported that the town has been picking up “a lot of e-waste in our alleys and right-of-ways,” which he wrote will be stored until the next ewaste day sponsored by the town.

Town staff has been reviewing the construction drawings for infrastructure at the Carbondale Marketplace (City Market store) at the intersection of Highway 133 and West Main Street.

Harrington also reported that, last Friday morning, most of the town’s police officers finished the annual “agility test,” and that the remaining officers were to tackle the test that afternoon.

At the town-owned Gateway RV Park, occupancy data for the week of June 17-24 shows that 125 of the 133 spots available were booked and occupied. Bookings for this week were running at 52 reservations (122 people), for an occupancy rate of 74 percent.

Cop Shop From June 16 - 23, Carbondale officers handled 207 calls for service. During that period, Carbondale officers and others investigated the following cases of note:

FRIDAY, June 17: At 9:45 a.m. police were called to the Bridges High School building, on a report that someone had tried to force open a north-facing window at the building. Nothing was reported stolen or damaged, according to police.

FRIDAY, June 17: at 8:28 p.m. police were dispatched to a home in Carbondale in response to a report that a 16-year-old was making threats against the reporting party, and was barricaded in a bedroom with a knife.

The reporting party advised police that the youth had broken some windows. No further information was provided by police.

FRIDAY, June 17: At 10:44 p.m. police stopped a vehicle at Highway 133 and Village Road for not having its headlights turned on. After investigating, officers arrested the 19-year-old driver on charges of drunk driving, being a minor in possession of alcohol, suspicion of dealing “imitation” controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia.

SUNDAY, June 19: At 29 minutes past midnight, police were called to a location on Jacobs Place, where they issued 13 summons to individuals, aged 18, 19 and 20, and to one juvenile, for being minors in possession of and consuming alcohol. In addition, one minor was issued a summons for an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

SUNDAY, June 19: At two different times, police were informed that a vehicle had been broken into in the 400 block of South 3rd Street and items were stolen, and that someone had stolen a truck from in front of a home on South 2nd Street. The truck was later recovered, with the keys in the ignition, in another part of town. No suspects

Those wishing to run for the Carbondale Mayoral seat at the general (mail ballot) election to be held November 8, 2016, may pick up Nomination Petitions beginning on August 9, 2016 from the Town Clerk, 511 Colorado Avenue.

A.J. stepping down from board of trustees

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Carbondale Trustee A.J. Hobbs, who has served roughly half of his four-year term, announced last week that he will be stepping down “some time in early September” in order to attend courses at the Crestone Healing Arts School in the San Luis Valley area.

Hobbs, 30, was elected in 2014, the same year as his fellow trustee, Katrina Byars, and under ordinary circumstances Hobbs would have been up for reelection in 2018.

Following the recent municipal election, in which three new trustees were elected, and the resignation of former Mayor Stacey Bernot earlier this year, Byars and Hobbs, along with twoterm Trustee Frosty Merriott, represented the remaining institutional memory on Carbondale’s Board of Trustees.

All that has now changed.

“I have been accepted (to attend the Crestone school) where I will spend the fall studying massage and Chinese medicine,” Hobbs wrote in a June 23 email to his five colleagues on the board of trustees (Bernot resigned her job because she moved out of Carbondale, leaving a board of six members).

Following course work at Crestone, Hobbs said, he will “be moving to Spain indefinitely, until I am fluent in Spanish.”

Hobbs reported he had already alerted Town Manager Jay Harrington about the matter, and expressed the hope that “the board (of trustees) will have some flexibility on choosing to nominate a trustee for the position or put the position up for election on the November ballot.”

Harrington, however, said on Monday that

he was still doing research to see what the trustees’ options are regarding either appointment or election to fill Hobbs’ post.

The findings of that research, he said, were to be reviewed by him, town attorney Mark Hamilton and the trustees at the June 29 board meeting, which was too late to be reported by the Sopris Sun. Hobbs wrote that he was “grateful” for having had the chance to serve on the board, and added, “I look forward to working together this summer to continue to improve and progress our community.”

He wrote that the “biggest thing I am working on now is updating our ‘sustainability plan’ with the E-board and CLEER/CORE [Clean Energy Economy for the Region, and the Community Office for A.J. page 13

Eberhardt retirement get together at First Friday Sopris Sun Staff Report Dr. David Eberhardt, an optometrist who has practiced in the Roaring Fork Valley for 40 years, is retiring in July. Dr. Eberhardt grew up in rural Wisconsin, according to a press release. After a four-year stint in the Army and a year in Ft. Collins, Dr.

Eberhardt and his family settled in Carbondale in 1976 as one of the first local optometrists, where he joined the practice of Dr. Bill Zilm, founder of 20/20 EyeCare. A year later, Dr. Eberhardt took over the Aspen branch as his own practice and saw patients for over 20 years before moving the practice to Carbondale. His career came full circle when Dr. Eberhardt joined 20/20 EyeCare in 2012, and has continued practicing in the 20/20 EyeCare Carbondale location (his previous office location) up until his retirement.

Candidates emerge in mayor’s race It appears that a horse race already has begun among candidates hoping to become the next mayor of Carbondale in the November general election. According to published accounts, former Carbondale Trustee Ed Cortez apparently heard the starting gun for the race within days after former Mayor Stacey Bernot stepped down from the job in early May. Meanwhile, current Acting Mayor Dan Richardson recently told the Glenwood Springs Post Independent that he is interested in seeking the position. Roger Sheffield met Calaway when he was CEO of the CMC Foundation several years ago, and says he has learned a lot from their relationship that has helped him become more effective as a fundraiser.

“He is very unique — philanthropists can be very guarded, and sometimes don’t want to give away their secrets,” Sheffield says. “All too often there are people in the fund-raising field who will say or do anything to get a gift, and Jim has reinforced with me that you need to be authentic, and genuinely have an interest in what the donor has to say. I consider Jim one of the top five philanthropists I’ve worked with over my 30-year career, for his genuineness, his willingness to help, and his com-

mitment to his neighbors.”

Sheffield says he knows Calaway has a wide network of friends, and enjoys being “summoned to the porch for a glass of wine.” As one of those friends as well as a neighbor of Calaway’s, Donn Willins, says: Calaway’s capacity for diverse friendship is only rivaled by his generosity, which is notable given their outspoken political differences.

“I just love the fact that when Jim and I sit and talk, we’re not trying to change each other,” Willins says. “Our solid friendship comes first, and our infinite number of political differences don’t come into it. We have a core liking of each other that not politics or anything can get in the way of.”

Trustees dip into Bag Fund for Mt. Fair cups

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer A proposal that the annual Carbondale Mountain Fair make a change in how it serves alcoholic beverages to fairgoers caused a little discomfort for some of the town's trustees recently, when the issue was raised by Trustee Katrina Byars during the “trustee comments” section of the June 22 meeting.

Byars brought it up after hearing about it from the newly-named Carbondale Arts (CA) organization (historically known as the Carbondale Council on the Arts and Humanities), which wants to switch from plastic and corn-cob cups to a new, reusable and recyclable stainless steel version as a way to further minimize the amount of garbage generated by the Mountain Fair.

The Fair already has a significant tableau of environmentally friendly policies and procedures, such as creation of a Green Team that every year takes charge of ensuring that Fairgoers correctly deposit their trash in bins for recycling or destined for the local landfill, including recyclable plastic and corn-fiber cups the Fair has used for years to minimize its waste stream.

“I just think it’d be a really cool investment for our community,” Byars said, suggesting the board of trustees kick in half the cost of 3,000 cups (the cups will cost a total of $6,000), as part of its support for the

wildly popular Mountain Fair.

But some on the board were not so sure about the idea, particularly as they had not heard anything about it before that night.

“I’m not really comfortable with this,” said Trustee Marty Silverstein. “I feel kind of blindsided.”

Expressing similar sentiments was Acting Mayor Dan Richardson, who noted that the trustees were being asked to decide this question without recommendations from the town’s roster of volunteer advisory boards, particularly the Environmental Board (known as the E-Board) that ordinarily reviews issues such as this one and makes recommendations to the trustees.

Byars noted that the E-Board was scheduled to discuss the “cup-troversy” at its next meeting, on June 27, and that a recommendation could be expected after that.

The E-Board ended up voting in favor of the agreement crafted by the trustees after the debate at the June 22 meeting.

Byars, at the June 22 meeting, made a motion to spend up to $3,000 of the “waste diversion fund,” otherwise known as the Bag Ban Fund that the town collects from City Market due to a town ordinance that bans the use of one-use plastic bags at the store. Shoppers can buy a paper or reusable bag to haul their gro-

ceries home, and some of that fee goes straight to the town.

Trustee Frosty Merriott offered a “friendly amendment,” outlining the details of the 50-50 sharing of costs between CA and the town, which was accepted.

The motion passed by a vote of 4-1, with Silverstein voting against the idea.

Voting for the motion were Richardson, Byars, A.J. Hobbs and Frosty Merriott.

Trustee Ben Bohmfalk was absent.

The steel cups will be intended primarily, or at least initially, for serving mixed drinks to customers, whereas beer will still be served in plastic-seeming cups made from corn fiber as it has for many years, said CA Director Amy Kimberly this week.

“What we are hoping to do is lead the way for the eventual banishment of the old corn cups,” said Amy Kimberly, who expressed the hope that fair attendees will want to use their new, stainless steel cups for all kinds of liquid refreshment.

She acknowledged that the expected price tag for the steel cups — $8 apiece at The Cantina, the Mountain Fair’s venue for drinkers of beer and other alcoholic beverages — is kind of high for Mountain Fair aficionados.

Talks are underway, she said, to figure out whether the price of each cup includes having it filled with the booze of one’s choice (unlikely), or whether there will

simply be a discount applied to the price of drinks being poured into the steel cup.

The cups will sport the Mountain Fair logo for the year (it changes annually), while foam sleeves known as “koozies” will feature the new name and logo of the arts council, Carbondale Arts.

“That’s where we’re kind of rolling out our new name and logo,” Kimberly noted.

In other action on June 22, the trustees: • Approved liquor licenses for the 7Eleven store and Mary’s Main Street Spirits (as well as a separate tasting license for Mary’s); • Approved an art gallery business permit for Crystal Glass Studio; • Approved special event liquor licenses for the Carbondale Mountain Fair (July 29-31); the Carbondale Clay Center for First Friday activities this summer; and the annual Cowboy Up event on Aug. 26 at the 4th Street Plaza.

• Continued, until July 13, a public hearing concerning a proposed marijuana infused product (MIP) manufacturing operation on Highway 133 in Carbondale; • Accepted a favorable audit report on the town’s 2015 finances, from McMahon & Associates LLC, the certified public accounting firm; • Approved an amendment to the annexation and development agreement for the Thompson Park subdivision.

Harding, Voigt claim they were set up (Editor: The Sopris Sun will continue reporting on this story as it develops).

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Kelly Harding, one of two Carbondale residents arrested while driving through Ohio last January and charged with possession of 128 pounds of marijuana, said this week that he is fighting the charges and believes he was set up by the Ohio State Patrol.

The other man involved in the case, Craig Voigt, concurs with Harding’s assessment of their situation, and believes the alleged setup was actually part of a federal drug agency’s scheme to entrap Voigt, and that Harding was unfortunate enough to get caught in the net.

Voigt freely admitted he had been a pot dealer earlier in his life and had been busted in 1996 in San Diego, Calif., and served about four years in prison in Pennsylvania.

But he said he had retired from the business after that and there was no marijuana in the car when it was stopped by state police.

Harding, 47, and Voigt, 46, say they were driving on Interstate 70 through Ohio on Jan. 13, in a borrowed 2014 Subaru bearing Colorado plates that belongs to Harding’s mother, to deliver Voigt to his mother’s house in New York City, when they were pulled over by three Ohio state patrol cruisers with drug-sniffing dogs in the back of each cruiser.

Within minutes the two were under arrest, in handcuffs and in the back seats of one or another patrol vehicle, while one of the arresting officers “jumped into the car

(the Subaru) and drove off.”

Harding has said repeatedly that there was no pot in the Subaru when it was stopped, and that he suspected the state patrol had the marijuana stored in a police facility to which they drove his mom’s car.

It was after the Subaru went into the facility, a state patrol car barn, both men said, that the marijuana was revealed, piled on the hood of a police vehicle in sealed plastic bags, and photographed. The photos were published by newspapers across the country, within days of the arrests.

“There’s only one way that can be done, and that’s by the feds,” said Voigt in a telephone conversation on Wednesday with The Sopris Sun, referring to the rapid way the story was spread across the U.S. Voigt also said he believes federal drug agents learned that he and Harding were driving across the country, alerted the Ohio State Patrol, and picked the area of Ohio just west of Columbus, which Voigt said is known for drug-interdiction police activity.

As evidence, he points to the fact that the Subaru was stopped by a trio of K-9 units who were parked together in the median of I-70.

“My dad was a cop, and he said that never happens,” Voigt said of the positioning of the three police cars on a stretch of interstate highway.

Both Voigt and Harding view the fact that three police cruisers were parked together, watching traffic, as suspicious.

Also suspicious, in the eyes of the two men, was the alleged presence of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency agent at the state pa-

trol car barn. Harding said he was interrogated by the agent, a woman, for about two hours while Voigt was left in the back seat of a patrol car outside the facility.

Voigt, who firmly believes the Ohio State Patrol is working with the federal agency, said the timing of the traffic stop also is cause for concern, in line with his belief that federal agents were tracking the progress of the Subaru across six states, from Colorado to Ohio.

“They waited until Ohio to pop us, I’m certain of that,” he said.

Both men said adamantly that the pot was not theirs, was not in the Subaru when they were stopped, and had appeared only after police took custody of the Subaru.

“The cops put it there,” Voigt said simply.

Bond confusion Both men also are convinced the state illegally raised Harding’s bond, which initially was set by a judge at $5,000, to an amount 10 times that without a hearing.

According to Harding and his wife, Kristie, she showed up in Ohio with a bail bondsman on Friday, Jan. 22, ready to bail out her husband at the $5,000 level. But confusion about the records prevented that from happening.

The following Monday, when Kristie again tried to bond Kelly out of jail, authorities kept them waiting until 10 a.m. and then informed them that the bond had been raised to $50,000, with no explanation and no hearing.

She ultimately got together more than $5,000 and Harding was released on Feb. 10.

Harding, who is married with several children, said this week that he has pleaded not-guilty to the charges against him — possession of more than 40 kilograms of marijuana and “possession of criminal tools,” meaning a seal-a-meal machine police say was used to package the marijuana.

Harding has denied owning the seal-ameal or having it in the wheel well of the back seat, which is where police say they found it.

Raising a Reader program goes Aspen to Parachute CRES an early success story

By Nicolette Toussaint Sopris Sun Contributor Thanks to Raising a Reader, more than 300 Carbondale kids are learning to love books. They’re among 2,100 local children who tote home red Raising A Reader book bags during the school year, then sport blue library book bags during the summer.

Formally known as “Raising a Reader Aspen to Parachute,” the nonprofit aims to help children prepare for the learning-toread process. In Colorado, about one-third of kids arrive in kindergarten unprepared and already behind the learning curve.

Raising a Reader Executive Director Rick Blauvelt, who lives in Carbondale, explained, “There’s a large body of research that connects language development during the first five years of life with reading success later in life. In those early years, human beings are wired for rapid language development. That includes vocabulary, understanding of sentence structure, reading recall, focus and cadence — all things that are critical to a child’s ability to learn to read. We know that children who are stimulated by word games, singing and … oral language experiences do better in school, and studies have shown that children who come from low-verbal households can enter

school two years behind in their language development.”

Up until third grade, kids spend much of their school time learning to read, and after third grade, they spend their time reading to learn. Blauvelt notes that there’s a lot of research that confirms that “if children aren’t reading at grade level by the end of third grade, most will never catch up.”

The reason is that 90 percent of a person’s brain development occurs during the critical first five years of life, a time when the brain is more receptive than it will ever be. “After that,” Blauvelt noted, “it becomes harder to make up for lost time. Brain growth slows down. What scientists call the ‘plasticity’ of the mind is diminished by nine or 10 years old. If you haven’t caught up [with your peers] by then, it’s a lot harder to do later on.”

CRES Concerned about children who were coming into kindergarten unprepared, Carbondale’s Crystal River Elementary School contacted Raising a Reader (RAR) three years ago. The result was a collaboration: Raising a Reader and school teachers work with parents on four different nights. The Valley Settlement Project places a mentor to assist all year long in each classroom, and the school makes home visits to the highestrisk kids. A parent mentor assists in each classroom, and the school makes home visits to the highest-risk kids.

Raising a Reader supplies its trademarked red cloth bags — bags that are filled each week with four loaned, grade-appropriate books — to kindergarteners who would be entering first grade the next year.

“By the end of the school year, there was a significantly larger increase in reading readiness scores compared to the previous year.”

“The results were pretty dramatic,” Blauvelt told The Sopris Sun. By the end of the school year, there was a significantly larger increase in reading readiness scores compared to the previous year. Drawing on the success of the Crystal River Elementary program, which was funded by the Cradle to Career initiative of the Aspen Community Foundation, RAR expanded it to 25 kindergarten classrooms up and down the valley.

Engaging parents Raising a Reader not only works directly with children, it also engages parents, teach-

ing them the importance of reading aloud, songs, games and lots of conversation at home. Blauvelt explained that the organization reaches out to families through preschools, child care centers and Head Start, and also partners with other organizations to “identify kids who are not in any formal day care and who would be at risk of arriving at school behind their peers.” Raising a Reader then invites families to join weekly, neighborhood family outreach sessions in seven locations, including Carbondale.

During the past school year, Raising a Reader sponsored about 70 introductory school field trips to libraries for groups of 12-15 kids, plus assorted parents. “By the end of the year,” Blauvelt said, “we will have collected hundreds of library applications from those field trips.” During an end-ofthe-year school event, “each child is called up, one at a time, and they will get a blue bag, a library book bag. It’s not like the red school bag, which is used for a weekly loaner system and has to be left at school.

The blue bag they get to keep forever, and there’s a library card attached to its handle.”

Recently, when the Ride the Rockies bike race passed through Carbondale, the Denver Post Foundation presented a $5,000 check to Raising a Reader. The race is sponsored by the Denver Post – an organization that has an enlightened self-interest in literacy – and the Post’s foundation awards grants to nonprofits in each of the six towns where racers spend the night.

Hobbs ended his e-mail with what he termed “my advise for the new trustees,” Ben Bohmfalk, Dan Richardson and Marty Silverstein: “take action now, do not hesitate, two years goes by in the blink of an eye.”

In a telephone interview with The Sopris Sun, Hobbs said he had been thinking about the matter for some time.

“I’ve had that massage school on my radar for as long as I’ve been a trustee,” he said, explaining that the school is contemplating a move out of state, “so I’d better go now.”

Although he conceded that he felt some hesitation about leaving the board now, he said he talked it over with his fellow trustees, which put his concerns to rest.

“I feel very comfortable with the board, and where the community is at,” he said, predicting that the town will “produce a good candidate” to replace him.

Hobbs also explained that he was traveling in Canada about five years ago when he learned that the dispute over gas drilling in the Thompson Divide was heating up, and felt compelled to come back to Carbondale.

“That was my main motivation for coming back,” he said, “to protect the Thompson Divide.”

With the recent news that federal land managers plan to cancel all the drilling leases in the Thompson Divide, he said, “I felt complete in my obligation.”

numerous discrepancies in the police and court documents sent to him under the court’s “discovery” requirements, and has determined that a police “dash-cam” videotape being used as evidence in the case has been tampered with.

He also pointed out that, at one point, an Ohio judge ruled that the state had met its “burden of proof” in finding that Voigt was the suspect most responsible for the alleged pot smuggling. But it was not long after that ruling that Voigt was released from jail and the charges dropped.

“The reason they released me and dropped the charges,” Voigt said on Wednesday, “is that the feds put pressure on the state.”

He believes federal authorities think he is still a dealer and want to put him back in prison.

“I think the feds are coming after me, and that’s the truth,” he declared, adding, “Once you get a number on your back, they want to keep you in the system for as long as possible.”

As a result, he said, he has been unable to pay his bills, his water and gas utilities have been cut off, and he is in danger of losing the townhouse he and his wife own.

Both Harding and Voigt currently are living back in Carbondale and awaiting developments in the case.

Harding, however, has spent considerable time pouring

over the records, both paper and video, and believes he has a chance to get the case thrown out.

He already has fired one public defender (he can’t afford a private attorney) for what Harding said was incompetent representation, and is hoping he will do better with the attorney he has now.

Suspicions Voigt’s suspicions were supported by statements from state prosecutor Nick Adkins who, according to a May 7 news story, admitted to a judge that the DEA was behind Voigt’s release, and that the federal agency was investigating Voigt for drug related activities.

Harding was scheduled to go on trial in July, but that trial has been postponed because one of the arresting officers could not attend. It is now tentatively set for a date in August.

Harding told The Sopris Sun that fighting the charges has cost him nearly $15,000 so far, including payment of surety against a $50,000 bond, paying $900 to get his mother’s car out of the police impound lot, and driving back and forth to Ohio several times for court hearings and procedures.

The sporadic but unavoidable travel, he said, has interfered with his ability to find and keep a job as a drywall mechanic.

C’dale looks to future with “Creative District” certification

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer With an announcement on June 16 by the Colorado Creative Industries division of state government, Carbondale was named on a list of six newly minted “certified Creative Districts,” joining a roster of earlier certifications that now stands at 21 communities around Colorado.

The announcement, along with a wide range of other information, can be seen at the website of Colorado Creative Industries (or CCI, which is at www.coloradocreativeindustries.org).

The town’s certification, according to Carbondale Arts Director Amy Kimberly, means Carbondale will be eligible for new state grants aimed at helping Creative Districts get up and running smoothly, as well as other forms of assistance.

The CCI and its subordinate programs make up an overall program created by Gov. John Hickenlooper in 2011, and fall under the oversight of the state’s Office of Economic Development, with financial support by The Boettcher Foundation and other entities.

“These 2016 certified creative districts are great examples of how the arts create exciting places for people to visit and live,” said Hickenlooper in a release last month. “These districts not only increase quality of life, they also help with economic vitality of the area and attract people from all over Colorado and the country.”

As part of its certification, Carbondale is in line for $30,000 in a cash award, along with $10,000 worth of other forms of assistance, Kimberly said.

Among the other forms of assistance that come with certification, Kimberly acknowledged, will be different kinds of marketing and promotional materials designed to alert travelers that Carbondale is a place where the arts thrive, and to invite them to come here.

This inevitably raises the question for some residents, who may think Carbondale is growing too popular for its own good, of whether this Creative District certification might end up spurring population growth here.

“I think the intent is to make sure that people who live here and work here can survive here,” Kimberly said, responding to a question from a reporter.

She explained that she was referring to the rather amorphous category of “creatives” who already live here but might be finding it difficult to find housing and afford the rising cost of living.

Rattling off a list of such “creatives,” Kimberly mentioned those working in design, media and “innovation” business, which she takes to mean anything from publishing to website design to the design of renewable energy systems for area homes and businesses.

Also included, she said, are those who work in the “wellness” and health-care professions; in “cultural heritage” concerns including local food production; information technology; marketing; and other examples of “creative entrepreneurial” concerns.

“I’d say about 80 percent of our businesses in town fall into the creative industries,” she said, which is why being a Creative District “is such a good fit for Carbondale.”

The goal of making it affordable for people to live here, Kimberly said, is reflected in efforts the state is doing to help “mitigate against the problem of displacement” of local working individuals who might find themselves forced to move by housing costs and a general increase in the cost of living in the Roaring Fork Valley.

One such effort, she said, is a program that began last year, known as “Space to Create Colorado,” which the governor, the nonprofit philanthropic organization, The Boettcher Foundation, and the Colorado Department of Local Affairs are working on together.

According to the CCI website, “Space to Create Colorado is the first state-driven initiative for affordable housing for artists in the nation. The purpose is to develop affordable housing and work space for artists and arts organizations, and to position Colorado as the nation’s leader in artist-led community transformation in rural communities.”

The program is geared toward development of nine proj-

ects in communities around Colorado over the course of eight years, according to the website.

“Housing and economic development are vital needs in rural Colorado,” Hickenlooper declared in a press release on the CCI website, “and the Space to Create initiative advances both of these issues by harnessing the power of the public, private and philanthropic sectors, as well as the creative community, to activate historic space and elevate rural economies.”

The idea, according to the website, is to come up with mixed-use development projects that offer live/work potential for artists and others in the CCI pantheon of “creatives.”

Kimberly said Trinidad was the first community to be chosen for the Space to Create program, and that the program’s managers currently are looking at either Mancos and Ridgeway to be the second.

“These 2016 certified creative districts are great examples of how the arts create exciting places for people to visit and live.”

– Gov. John Hickenlooper Carbondale hopes to apply for the 2017 round of Space to Create activity, Kimberly said.

She said the Space to Create program is evidence that the state is fully aware of the concept of “pitfalls of popularity” that can befall small, rural towns suddenly caught up in wellpublicized economic development actions that are focused on recreational, artistic and other attractive amenities.

Five-year effort Kimberly noted that she first began exploring the CCI possibilities for Carbondale about five years ago, as Carbondale recovered from its second-round battle over proposed “bigbox” development as part of the Village at Crystal River, on 24 acres of land at the western edge of town.

“It really stemmed out of the whole big-box controversy,” she emphasized, when she became convinced that Carbondale needed to concentrate its energies on development as an artistic, recreationally-oriented, energy-efficient community.

Striving for Creative District certification, she concluded, would be “a healthy way for us to determine what we do want to be when we grow up.”

She then added with a laugh, “If we grow up.”

She worked with about 50 like-minded locals, she said, and the group “put in a lot of effort” over the five years it took to win certification (Carbondale was bypassed by CCI in an early application).

Naming Craig Wheeless, owner of Rainy Day Design; Brett Meredith, a trails planner with the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority; Laurie Bernhard of Redstone; local musician/artist Olivia Pevec; and town public works employee Laurie Lindberg, Kimberly said the effort toward certification was supported by “a wide range of people” in the arts, government and business.

In the months preceding the announcement that Carbondale had achieved certification, Kimberly and the organization she heads (formerly known as Carbondale Council for the Arts and Humanities, soon to be retitled as Carbondale Arts) came up with a number of projects intended to fulfill the goals of a Creative District.

One of those, the Rio Grande ArtWay, is likely to be the first recipient of money from the $30,000 CCI grant that came with the certification decision.

Kimberly emphasized, however, that it will be up to the appointed governance board of the Creative District (they will be appointed by the Carbondale Arts board of directors) to determine how to spend those funds.

Part of the ongoing work of the Creative District, Kimberly said, will be to apply for grants through CCI or other sources, aimed at boosting such things as “agritourism” (programs intended to bring tourists to visit some of the area’s local food producers) and recreational programming, attracting tourists to take advantage of the many-faceted recreation activities in this area.

“It opens us up to a lot more opportunity,” Kimberly maintained.

For example, she continued, the Crystal River Elementary School is considering “rebranding” itself to fit into the CCI framework as a “Creative District School.”

She said the concept has yet to be clearly and finally defined, but CRES is the only school in the state considering such a move, and Kimberly said the state is looking for a “pilot project” built around the idea and likely will be interested in helping out.

One of Carbondale Creative District’s first projects, Kimberly said, is placing “wayfinding” or directional signs along local trails and roads, to direct visitors to various local public facilities and organizations.

Through the use of colorful decals bearing symbols denoting the activities or organizations in question, the signs are made of wood and born by wooden posts.

Another project, she said, is the construction of a new Carbondale Creative District website, which she said is to be up and running soon.

The site, which currently is up only as a beta version, tells the story of the Creative District process in Carbondale, and offers links to businesses that have signed on and paid the small fee required to participate (Kimberly said there are “scholarships” for small businesses that cannot afford the fee).

The first local business to sign up, she said, was the Crystal Theater, run by long time locals Bob and Kathy Ezra, and now there are 30-40 on the list.

And the Carbondale Rotary club has signed up to take on development of a new archway at the juncture of the Rio Grande Trail and Highway 133, which will function as a new entryway into the town.

“It’s coming together,” she said of the broader effort to bring together the various components of Carbondale under the Creative District umbrella.

“This process has really allowed us to set a direction for the community,” she concluded, adding that other towns in the valley, such as the Town of Snowmass Village and the Town of Basalt, also are exploring possible programs along the same lines as the Carbondale Creative District.

Art Base presents “Crazy Mix and the Love Child�

The Art Base (formerly the Wyly Art Center) presents “Crazy Mix and the Love Child,â€? featuring Andrew Roberts-Gray from July 8 through Aug. 6. The show opens from 5 to 7 p.m. on July 8, according to a press release. “Crazy Mix and the Love Childâ€? is a new body of work for Roberts-Gray. In it, he explores representation versus abstraction by showcasing component pieces, multifaceted surfaces and a site-speciďŹ c installation piece. Working with a range of materials — aluminum, cardboard, paper, plastic line, steel, mirrored plexiglass, and paint — the exhibition highlights the artist’s restless, creative impulses and resolutions.

With titles such as “Jester B.� and “Walk This Way� the show promises an interesting dialog with the viewer.

Roberts-Gray received his MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.

His work has been exhibited in numerous

group and solo exhibitions across the United States. He is represented by Michael Warren Contemporary in Denver. His work was shown in the “Art of the State, 2016â€? at the Arvada Center in Arvada. The work “Extroducingâ€? took second place in the “Art of the Stateâ€? exhibition and was touted as one of the show’s best works in a Denver Post visual arts review. Roberts-Gray is organizing an exhibition for the Anderson Ranch Art Center’s Patton-Mallott Gallery entitled “Surface as Cypher,â€? featuring the work of ďŹ ve artists, slated for August through September. He lives with his wife, artist Annette Roberts-Gray, in Carbondale.

When asked to explain his work, RobertGray said: “It’s seductive work that hovers between painting and sculpture. The environment of a room is in the piece — steel, cardboard, Dibond, mirrored plex. These architectural elements, working against the landscape, become remnants of a landscape. !

Concurrent with the July 8 opening, Roberts-Gray will discuss his work in an art talk with Executive Director Genna Moe at 5:30 p.m. “We encourage guests to join us for the art talk and then continue their art appreciation with a visit to the Art Base Annex for the opening of ‘The Looking Glass: Artist Proofs by Lynn Goldsmith,’� said Moe. In her show, Goldsmith turns her lens on herself, and assumes an array of elaborate guises and imaginative scenarios. Exhibition runs through August 6, 2016.

The Art Base is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Art Base Annex hours are Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 6 p.m. Both exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Carbondale updating its 2005 energy/climate plan Town wants your input

By Patrick Hunter and Lucy Kessler Another day in paradise; in beautiful Carbondale. “Vibrancy” is the new buzzword for community boosters. If the current boom here in ’Bonedale is any indication, we have plenty of “good vibrations.” We also have fantastic weather, clean air, the right amount of water, peace, beautiful surroundings and wonderful recreation. Life is good. No wonder so many people want to live here. Of course, Carbondale, and this valley, are typical of mountain recreational communities all over this country.

So unlike living in another nice Colorado town such as Fort Collins, it is pretty hard to even think about how this seemingly ideal life style and environment might ever take a turn for the worse.

Fort Collins has had traumatic experiences with wildfires, drought and floods. Fort Collins has had their “come to Jesus” experience. Therefore, the city leaders and the community as a whole have created a strong program to deal with the issues that scientists, including those working at their own Colorado State University, are saying will definitely get worse. Our esteemed local Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) helped that city prepare an extensive plan to become more “resilient” in the face of the challenges.

The Rocky Mountain Institute is also mentioned because it recently held a show-

ing of a powerful new documentary titled “A Time to Choose.” The showing coincided with the American Renewable Energy Day conference that took place in Snowmass last week. The documentary takes some shocking looks at the many tragic environmental disasters around the world.

Living here in “Shangri-La” it can be pretty hard to get worked up about destruction of the rain forests, mountain-top mining, the Alberta tar sands, or sea level rise. Recently, the Phoenix temperature hit 118 degrees; there were 26 dead in West Virginia floods; wildfires are everywhere — all of which are “somebody else’s problems.”

Or maybe we do have some shared responsibility. Maybe we do have to think about some of the creeping effects that are already apparent even in our little slice of heaven. Maybe we should be taking advantage of the new clean-energy technology because, guess what, this new energy is getting to be cheaper than coal and gas.

Climate Action Plan The Town of Carbondale produced its “Energy and Climate Protection Plan” in about 2005. Now, 10 years later, the town leadership thought it was time for an update.

CORE (the Community Office for Resource Efficiency) and CLEER (Clean Energy Economy for the Region) are non-profit groups that work in the new energy and efficiency area, and assist the Town in accomplishing its goals. They, and your Carbondale Envi-

ronmental Board, were asked to take on the “Energy and Climate Protection Plan” review. As a first step, we wanted to go to the community as a whole and assess public opinion on energy and climate issues.

Carbondale water users (1,800 in total) will be receiving a paper survey in their next water bill. The survey is in English and Spanish. The survey goes right into the envelope with your check. Additionally, a similar survey is already online at the Town of Carbondale website www.carbondalegov.org. Paper copies of the survey will be available around town. Fifteen $25 gift cards to local restaurants and businesses will be awarded in a drawing. However, both versions of the survey can be submitted anonymously. This will be the first-ever survey from the town on the matters of energy and climate change.

The original 2005 plan put forth a strong commitment to energy efficiency and climate values. The Town has vigorously pursued these goals and has made tremendous progress in energy efficiency, clean energy and alternative transportation. What the town wants now is feedback from the community on its work to date, as well as guidance going forward.
