I

t’s that time of year in and around Carbondale when most ranchers work dawn to dusk, cutting, baling and stacking the hay in their fields.

“The combination of moisture and heat spikes the growth according to rancher Sarah Tornare and this has turned out to be a good year.”

Being out in the hayfields, and operating the heavy equipment in sizzling temperatures, is making the job this year more challenging. “Those tractors

would be hotboxes on wheels without air conditioning,” Tornare told The Sopris Sun, adding that it’s so hot you have to have a cab with air conditioning, and she does.

Because of the heavy equipment and mechanical IQ required to operate the equipment and maintain it properly, haying the fields is usually left up to the guys.

But, according to Sarah, who bales their

hay every year, “it doesn’t take great expertise to bale, just make sure you don’t have clogs and jams ‘cuz when you do it can set you back for a long time.” Sarah happens to be mechanical and it’s a good thing she is. “I have to routinely fix baler jams and remove clogs but I don’t get into heavy wrenching.” “I hear it when something is wrong, and stop and see what the problem is.” Most of the time she can fix it.

Felix has offered to teach her how to

cut hay and bale the big round bales as well. He likes Sarah to bale the hay rather than hiring someone else to do it because she pays attention and cares. Felix has said to her, “You’re such a good operator.” Although Sarah agrees, she thinks he’s just saying that to butter her up so that she can help him with all of the other fields and although she likes driving the tractor and listening to music while she bales, she says it can get tedious and would prefer to do other things.

Use tax funds carefully Dear Editor: I have worked as a part-time, adjunct ESL (English as a second language) instructor for Colorado Mountain College, intermittently for many years.

I so appreciated seeing the recent letter from CMC Board member Mary Ellen Denomy (Sopris Sun, this week; Aspen Daily News, Sunday, June 19).

She reminds us that the college is funded by tax dollars. She talks about upcoming votes for bonuses and salary increases for faculty (I presume full-time) and staff, including the president. She does not believe that the president should “receive any more than the faculty and staff who keep our college great.”

She also notes that the budget contains items she disagrees with, “such as raising tuition on some of our most deserving students and increasing spending for projects that do not directly enhance the education of our students ... .”

Here’s what I see happening as an ESL teacher, or, the view from the frontlines: First of all, we are losing our highly skilled, gracious program director and no one knows if she will be replaced or that position eliminated. She has done a terrific job and all ESL instructors deeply value her! We are the ones who know her worth and necessary, good work! We need her.

Also, tuition is going to be doubled at some point for ESL and GED students, the most vulnerable and needy. Our students are also taxpayers and deserve to benefit from their tax dollars. Investing in them is a solid investment for the future. While it is true that there are non-profit organizations in the Roaring Fork Valley doing good outreach work with this community, no English learning program can compare with the excellence, accessibility and depth of the CMC ESL and GED classes. CMC should promote these classes as a huge feather in their cap!

I just spent the better part of the last three years taking four required, intensive 45-hour Adult Basic ED Literacy classes required by the state (CDE) and CMC. All ESL/GED instructors had to become certified as Adult Basic Ed Instructors. These classes required 8-12 hours weekly, resulting in unpaid work for months at a time, and a huge sacrifice for no increase in pay.

We put ourselves through this process, in order to continue to do the work we love with the adult student immigrant population that we are privileged to teach and learn from.

CMC in the meantime, to save money, shortened hours spent in the classroom and cut back a few weeks of the semester for these targeted classes. They also significantly reduced the pay of any instructor who subs for another. ESL instructors substitute for one another when needed. Any

teacher will tell you that subbing in another teacher’s class for one session is very challenging and requires a lot of pre-class prep to communicate with the regular teacher, and post-class reporting on how it went, in order to insure continuity for the students. Now CMC has decided to pay the substitute teacher (who is highly experienced and certified) approximately only two-thirds of what they get paid as regular instructors. What?! They should be getting more, if anything, not less!

It is no secret that the CMC ESL and GED programs do not make money for the college. In fact, they are very expensive. But these measures are really hard to accept and understand, in particular when we see the top- heavy wages and bonuses at the upper levels of administration, much like a regular profit-making, topheavy corporation.

So, I thank Mary Ellen Denomy for the public reminder that CMC “should use the money that our taxpayers have given us with the utmost care … . “ Diane Kenney Carbondale

“No” on CMC budget Dear Editor: I am beholden to you, my constituents, because Colorado Mountain College is your college, so I am going to continue to reach out to you with issues that come before me as your elected Trustee. There are a couple of important votes that I will be making in the next week that impact how your tax dollars are spent at the college.

The board will be deciding if we should extend our president’s contract and give her a raise with a bonus. All of our faculty and staff are receiving an across-the-board raise of 2.5 percent and have been receiving a bonus at the end of the year for the outstanding work that they have been doing fulfilling the dreams of our students and communities. The president is also going to enjoy the benefits of this same increase and bonus. My belief is that a president should not receive any more than the faculty and staff who keep our college great. Also, I believe that a board should not saddle prospective boards with longterm contracts for personnel that may not align with future visions. Therefore, I will neither be voting for extending our president’s contract nor for additional compensation beyond what the faculty and staff is receiving.

The board is also voting on the budget for this coming year. I am voting against the proposed budget. The budget contains too many items that I cannot agree with, such as raising tuition on some of our most-deserving students and increasing spending for projects that do not directly enhance the education of our students. It is our duty as a board to use

the money that our taxpayers have given us with the utmost care and I am striving to do just that. I am hoping that my colleagues on the board espouse the same fiduciary responsibility.

Dogs and dope don’t mix Dear Editor: Last evening I took my dog for a walk on the flowering path north of the Carbondale Recreation Center off of Seventh and Lincoln Avenue. She was on a retractable leash and went exploring in some bushes. When I attempted to pull her away she came out chewing something and swallowed it before I could get it out of her mouth. My dog, like many others love to eat anything they sniff so I assumed it was food or poop.

We went to bed a little while later and when I woke up early the next morning I found her lethargic, wobbly and glassy eyed. I knew something was wrong and thought of the evening before on our walk and assumed she might have gotten into something poisonous. I immediately drove her to the Basalt ER where they took her vitals; all were significantly low. She was given a blood glucose test and an anti-nausea injection as well.

The vet determined that she had most likely ingested some form of pot. In other words, my sweet, vivacious dog was stoned!

Unfortunately the vet had seen many cases like hers before and said that even ashes from pot could have the same effect.

She went on to tell me that marijuana isn’t dangerous to dogs, although it isn’t fun for them either and because her vitals were low I personally assume if she had ingested even larger quantities it could have been a lot worse if not fatal.

I was told that the effects would wear off soon enough and the worst was most likely over but to keep her quiet for the rest of the day and to call her if she didn’t improve.

When I returned home I went back to try to find the spot where she had gone to see if I could find any trace of marijuana and get rid of it. I didn’t t see any plants growing or edibles but I also was uncertain where the exact bushes were that she had been in.

I have no judgment on anyone who is into pot but caution those who grow, smoke or eat it outside to PLEASE BE AWARE about what you toss away and what it can do to an unsuspecting animal, even a toddler who might be into eating dirt. I love Mick Jagger but I don’t want my dog resembling him.

E-Board’s online survey going off line For a bit

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer A Carbondale Environmental Board online survey appears headed for some tweaking, after a consultant agreed with The Sopris Sun that it seems deficient in at least one area and probably others.

Question #7 on the survey, which was posted on the town’s website (carbondalegov.org) on Friday, asks: “How should sustainability programs and expanded services (editor’s note: such as a circulator bus) be funded? (Choose your top three).”

The options are: • Dedicated tax; • Bond with voter approval; • Increased utility program funding; • Severance tax/federal mineral lease money; • Crowd-funding/donations; • Town general fund; • County funding; • Utility bill surcharge; • Gasoline tax.

There is no “None of the above” type answer for respondents who don’t want any money to be spent on sustainability programs or expanded services, or at least not the nine listed on the survey.

And, the survey requires that question #7, plus several others, must be answered or the survey will not be accepted. So, respondents are forced to list their top three preferences for funding, even if they might not agree that programs and services should be funded by the town, county, a utility bill surcharge or any other source. In April, voters shot down a proposal to fund programs through a surcharge on their electric and gas bills.

E-Board consultant Lucy Kessler of CORE, who helped write the survey, told The Sopris Sun she supposes she can go

back online and include a neutral-type answer. She said the Eboard’s thinking was that the previous two questions asked if residents “would be in favor of a car-share program” and whether the town should partner with RFTA to expand the intown shuttle/circulator bus route.“If people support (programs), how should they be funded? That was the idea,” Kessler said.

Background The E-Board decided to draft a survey to gauge the public’s thoughts on sustainability and related issues about two months ago. E-Board chair Julie Farwell told The Sun that Kessler, Erica Sparhawk (of CLEER) and board member Patrick Hunter were most involved in drafting the survey, which the E-Board recently approved for posting although it did not vote on it. “It wasn’t officially voted on but we did ask board members for their input on it in a shared google doc and the finalized version was made available for them to comment on-but nobody really did,” said Farwell in an e-mail to The Sun. In a follow up e-mail, she said the board did have input on the survey questions but that nobody wanted to change anything from the final version.

Farwell said the E-Board is also sending out the survey with the town’s July water bills. She said the E-Board is updating the town’s energy plan, which was written and approved by the town trustees, in 2006. That process led to the questionnaire, which is being conducted online by Survey Monkey.

The first eight survey questions ask respondents to: strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree or strongly disagree, and mostly pertain to climate change. The questions include: • The earth is getting warmer. The climate is changing.

• Human caused emissions are causing climate change.

• Governments should not be involved in addressing climate change.

• I feel a personal an obligation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

• I am aware of Carbondale’s greenhouse gas emissions goals.

The survey then asks about primary modes of transportation, composting and expanding the plastic bag ban to all stores.

Question #10 states, “The Town of Carbondale, The Environmental Board, CLEER and CORE offer a variety of programs and events. Do you recall hearing about or participating in any of the following” and lists three options: I participated in this, I’ve heard of it, and I’ve never heard of it.

The list includes: • Waste diversion/spring clean up day; • Home energy assessments; • Rebates for energy efficient upgrades for my home; • Christmas tree recycling program.

The town and E-Board are offering ten, $25 gift cards to City Market, town. (sic), Mi Casita and other restaurants to respondents who want to be included in a drawing for them.

Other problems After respondents submit their online surveys to Survey Monkey, the chimp will not let them return to the survey questions. Kessler explained that this is so that respondents can only answer one time, and the results won’t be skewed. However, the Sun pointed out, the survey is also a public document, which the public should be able to access, regardless of whether they have already submitted their survey. Kessler said the way to fix this problem would be to just post the questions, without Survey Monkey’s guardianship, on the website.

When asked about non-residents being able to respond to a survey that can help the town make policy decisions that won’t affect them personally, Kessler paused and said “That’s a good question … but the survey says it’s for town residents.

That’s who we are targeting.”

Kessler said the E-Board hopes to receive at least 400 responses in order to make it statistically significant. The board plans to run the survey through August.

Look for unconventional HEWMANs in Carbondale Sopris Sun Staff Report Dance Initiative will be welcoming a different kind of dance company for its next Artist In Residence, according to a press release.

The six members of the New York City based company HEWMAN will be in residence from July 11-16 at The Launchpad. HEWMAN is an unconventional collaborative dance project that strives to involve at least one medium other than dance, to collaborate with others to create an open-ended creative process and to present dance in new spaces where dance performance is not usually found.

HEWMAN will be taking advantage of the Carbondale Farmer’s Market from 1-2 p.m. on July 13 for a site-specific pop up performance. The public is welcome to observe and possibly participate in HEWMAN’s creative process during an open rehearsal at the Launchpad from 4 to 6 p.m. on July 14.

The troupe also offers an all-levels workshop titled “Our Bodies As Instruments for Living” at the Launchpad from 10:30 a.m. to noon on July 16. A studio presentation of HEWMAN’s work in progress “THIS IS NOTHING WITHOUT YOU” will be presented at 8:30 p.m. on July 16 with a Q&A session to follow. HEWMAN was founded by Juilliard School Dance graduates Jason Collins, James Lindsay Harwell and Ingrid Kapteyn in 2014. Since then, it has grown into a collective with a long-term vision that absorbs new collaborators for each project.

HEWMAN’s current work in progress, “THIS IS NOTHING WITHOUT YOU”, will be the focus of their residency and is a collaboration between HEWMAN, composer Andrew Funcheon, and Geiger. This new work will premiere in New York City in early August.

Though Collins, Harwell and Kapteyn said they feel most in their element when working together, they each work professionally for other choreographers. Collins, originally from Defreestville, New York, currently performs for and collaborates with performance artist Ryan McNamara and choreographers Christopher Williams, Dylan Crossman and

Danielle Russo. He has also worked with Pam Tanowitz, David Parker & The Bang Group, and Wally Cardona, Jennifer Lacey, Mary John Frank and Igal Perry. He was recently featured in Opera Omaha’s production of John Adams’s “A Flowering Tree,” and in Opéra National de Bordeaux’s production of Rameau’s “Dardanus.”

Harwell, originally from Dallas, toured internationally with Gallim Dance in the summer of 2014, and nationally with Brian Brooks Moving Company from September 2014 to March 2015.

Kapteyn, originally from Massachusetts, has been working and touring with Brian Brooks Moving Company since 2014. She performed in Punchdrunk NYC’s “Sleep No More” full-time from February 2013 to May 2014, and continues to make occasional appearances in the show. She was also a dancer in the Metropolitan Opera’s 2013-14 season productions of “Eugene Onegin” and “Prince Igor.” She has taught workshops throughout North America and Iceland (including with FRESH Dance Intensive) and at Princeton and Bucknell Universities. She serves as the New York administrator and assistant to the artistic director of Springboard Danse Montréal. This spring, Kapteyn will be performing the role of Mary Chase in Martha Clarke’s off-Broadway production “Angel Reapers” at The Signature Theater.

CASA’s bike tour rolls out June 25 The second Sopris Century Ride for the Child will be held on June 25, beginning with a “mass start� at 7 a.m. at Sopris Park in downtown Carbondale, wrote Town Manager Jay Harrington in his weekly memo to town trustees and other recipients.

The event, which is to beneďŹ t the CASA for Children nonproďŹ t organization, has several parts to it, including a Century Ride of 100 miles for the hard-core expert road riders; a 60-mile course for “the serious riderâ€? as described on the event website (www.sopriscentury.com); a 31-mile course for those “who want a challenge, but not take all day;â€? and a 12-mile ride for “family and kids.â€?

The 7 a.m. mass start is for the three more difďŹ cult courses, and a separate mass start is planned for the Family/Kids course at 9 a.m., although event organizers say it is all right for riders to get going outside those times. All riders are encouraged to exercise “vigilance in regards to Carbondale auto trafďŹ c,â€? the event website states.

The longer course will follow the Rio Grande Trail upvalley from Carbondale to the Old Snowmass junction, then up and back down Capital Creek and Snowmass Creek roads, on to Lower River Road to a turn-around near the Woody Creek Tavern.

All routes start in Carbondale and distances range from 12 to 100 miles. CASA of the Ninth provides specially trained volunteers to advocate for children who are victims of neglect or abuse in the Ninth Judicial District, which includes GarďŹ eld, Pitkin and Rio Blanco counties. The event is not a race, but rather a “nontimed, non-competitiveâ€? ride for those of varying abilities, and organizers expect most riders to ďŹ nish between 1 and 4 p.m. Four aid stations will be set up at roughly 20-mile intervals along the 100-, 60- and 31-mile

course, while there is one aid station for the Family/Kids course, near Rock Bottom Ranch on the Rio Grande Trail, about six miles from the start.

Registration, which can be done online, is capped at 300 riders and remained open as of earlier this week.

SATURDAY, June 11: At 4:57 a.m. Carbondale police, along with sheriff’s deputies from GarďŹ eld and Pitkin Counties, were called to a reported assault on Prince Creek Road. One suspect was arrested by the Pitkin County deputies.

SUNDAY, June 12: At shortly past 1 a.m. police were called to a bar on Main Street about a reported disturbance. After investigating, police arrested a 39-year-old suspect on charges of criminal mischief, harassment, trespassing, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and violation of a restraining order.

MONDAY, June 13: At 5:29 p.m. police were told of a one-car accident that had taken place earlier at the student-body entrance to Roaring Fork High School, in which a 16-year-old juvenile ran off the driveway and hit a wooden fence. A warning was issued.

WEDNESDAY, June 15: At 10:20 p.m. police arrested an 18-year-old male on an outstanding arrest warrant, and a 45-year-old woman on charges of obstructing police, as they tried to arrest the young man.

Congressional candidates check in with e Sun EDIToR’S NoTE: The Sopris Sun doesn’t usually cover candidates in Colorado’s Third Congressional District elections, but we did interview two candidates for this week’s paper. Democrat Gail Schwartz contacted The Sopris Sun and said she would be in the area and was willing to do an interview. So, she came by the Sun office in the Third Street Center and reporter John Colson interviewed her (see story below). And then there’s Carbondale resident Alex Beinstein. He’s a homey who announced his candidacy to challenge incumbent Scott Tipton via other local newspapers more than a month ago. So, the Sun finally swallowed its pride and reached out to him for this week’s paper.

The Western Slope’s economic prospects, she said, “have a lot to do with broadband connectivity,” and she would work on bringing federal resources into play to develop broadband infrastructure for homes, businesses and institutions in the district.

“We have many divides in this state,” she remarked, “political, geographical and digital.

Until we have adequate connectivity in our communities, we will not be competitive” in terms of having a workforce prepared for 21st century jobs, providing high-quality health care and attracting industry.

“Because industry is not going to come here unless we have adequate connectivity,” she predicted. “They’ll stay on the Front Range.”

Second, she said, will be the task of “fighting to protect our public lands.” She specifically was critical of recent Tipton-supported legislation, House Resolution 866 (known as the Federal Land Freedom Act), meant to give states authority “to control the development and production of all forms of energy on all available federal land.”

The bill, which would cover some 166 million acres of federal land, would exempt state-issued leases from any federal oversight or regulation, including the Endangered Species Act, the National Historic Preservation Act (meant to preserve historic artifacts) and the National Environmental Policy Act or NEPA. Schwartz’ goal, she said, is that “we are not put in a position where we have unmitigated leasing or sales” of federal lands and resources,

without analyses that have been part of the federal land management procedures for decades.

Additionally, Schwartz said, she would work to ensure her constituents have access to highquality health care.

“It’s unbelievable, the economic impact, the quality of life, when you have a health care provider” in a small, rural community, she said, emphasizing that she is not referring to a hospital, “just a provider, just a general practitioner, just a nurse practitioner.”

Acknowledging that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (known as the ACA or, less benignly, as Obamacare) has not worked as well as the president and its other supporters had hoped, she said, “We know what the Affordable Care Act has done to insurance rates here, what it’s doing to individuals, what it’s doing to businesses” who are having to pay some of the highest premium rates in the nation.

Not that she agrees with the effort of Republicans, including Tipton, who voted 42 times to kill the ACA. “I’m about getting in and making it work for rural communities and rural area,” she said.

“This is a very serious issue for us.”

Regarding oil and gas drilling in the district, Schwartz said, “Really, this region in part has been a sacrifice zone when it came to this early oil and gas development.”

She said the legislature asked the Colorado Department of Public Heath & Environment (CDPHE) to study the question of toxic gas emissions from drilling bores, pipelines and other facilities.

“They said we couldn’t afford it,” she said, adding that it was her belief that “you can’t afford not to do it. But we couldn’t move.”

She lauded the administration of Gov. John Hickenlooper and the state’s air quality control commission, who earlier this year adopted tough new rules to require energy companies to capture 95 percent of emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and methane.

Previously those gasses had been allowed to simply escape into the atmosphere, with the result that air quality studies were showing unacceptable increases in ozone, greenhouse gasses and resultant respiratory hazards for residents living near gas drilling facilities.

Although Schwartz feared that the new rules were akin to closing the barn door after the horses had escaped, she expressed hope that the rules will help prevent future negative impacts from industry activities.

Also on the public lands front, Schwartz said she is opposed to what is being called the New Sagebrush Rebellion, an attempt by anti-government activists and some state officials to force the turnover of federal lands to either private or state interests.

“These lands belong to the citizens of the United States, not just to the citizens of Colorado or Utah,” she said, referring to two states where the rebellion has many adherents. “This is a national resource, and the more we can protect it and mitigate impacts (from development) and build our economy around it, the better off we are.”

She also said she, unlike Tipton, believes that climate change is a real concern and threat, and that human activities contribute to the warming planet, and that government must do what it can to reverse the trend as decisively as possible.

Schwartz currently is the only Democrat listed on the Garfield County ballot challenging Tipton.

FRI.-SUN. June 24-26 THEATRE • Thunder River Theatre continues “Rashomon” by Fay and Michael Kanin on June 24-26. The play depicts the story of a samurai and his wife, traveling through a forest in Japan, who are apprehended by the roving bandit Tajomaru.

Through a mesmerizing series of flashbacks, four different characters recount their conflicting versions of what actually happened, revealing the complexities of perception, human nature, truth, deception, love and honor. The play was also made into a film by acclaimed director Akira Kurosawa. Critic Roger Ebert wrote that the movie “struck the world of film like a thunderbolt ... effectively opening the world of Japanese cinema to the West.”

The New York Times called the play, “pure art of the theatre,” and the New York Mirror described it as, “Delicate and dynamic,

Carbondale broadband interest appears narrow

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer A total of six people — three curious residents, the head of information technology for Colorado Mountain College (CMC) and two reporters — showed up at a meeting at the Carbondale Branch Library on June 15 to learn how Garfield County is faring as it considers ways to expand broadband service in this area.

Garfield County has set a goal of “improving the speed and reliability of internet service for businesses and residents throughout the region,” as outlined in a May 17 statement on the county's website (www.garfield-county.com).

Toward this end, Garfield County has joined forces with the government of Mesa County to the west, to use a Colorado Department of Local Affairs grant to hire NEO Connect, a consulting firm in Glenwood Springs, to put together a “needs assessment in both counties and to develop a plan for enhancing broadband services,” the Garfield County website states.

NEO also is charged with determining “strategies regarding the local governments’ role in this process,” according to the site.

Diane Kruse, founder and CEO of NEO Connect, and project consultant Steve Burkholder have so far held four community meetings on the topic, in Rifle, Glenwood Springs, Carbondale and New Castle, according to Burkholder's statements at the June 15 meeting, and have had fairly low numbers of attendees, Kruse told The Sopris Sun at the meeting.

But, she added, about 40 people attended a meeting aimed at economic development specialists from around the county, which she described as a healthy turnout.

Kruse noted that Glenwood Springs has its own broadband cable network connecting local governmental facilities and schools, with plans to expand that to homes and businesses at some point.

But the county, and the other five towns in the county, have yet to create anything similar for their own constituents.

Not opting out Garfield and Mesa counties have not joined a growing number of counties and towns that have “opted out” of a state law (SB 05-152) that restricts local governments

He also criticized Tipton over his recently publicized support for natural-gas-leasing legislation written mainly by Tipton’s reportedly biggest campaign contributor, the Texas energy firm SG Interests, which has leases in several parts of Western Colorado, including Thompson Divide.

He said he favors higher tariffs on imported goods, as a way to spur greater manufacturing of all kinds within the borders of this country rather than paying the environmental and social costs of allowing manufacturers to relocate overseas.

And he is strongly opposed to what he

from coming up with their own broadband services. The law is said to be a result of lobbying by telecommunications corporations, such as Comcast and Century Link, which are in the broadband business but have not provided that service to large parts of the rural Western Slope.

The law, passed in 2005, contains a provision permitting local governments to put the opt-out-or-not question to voters, and according to Kruse and Burkholder, some 60 counties, special districts (such as CMC) and towns around Colorado have voted to opt out and let their local governments explore the potential for localized broad-band service.

In every locality where the opt-out question has been put to voters, Kruse said, “All of them have passed. Many of them have passed with flying colors.”

Garfield County is considering placing a question on the November ballot that would ask county voters whether the county should, in fact, “opt out” and let the county government figure out how to hook up rural communities to high-speed internet service.

The Town of Parachute, she said, also has announced its intention to put an “opt-out” question to voters.

In Carbondale, according to Town Manager Jay Harrington, the board of trustees has discussed the issue in the past and will be doing so at least once and may twice later in the summer. But so far, Harrington reported, no decision has been made.

Jim English, CMC's director of technical and network services, noted at the Carbondale meeting with NEO Connect that the college district already opted out of SB152's restrictions, in order to arrange broadband services on its own to its 11 locations across 12,000 miles and nine counties.

And, he said, he was at the Carbondale meeting to learn about how CMC might get involved in extending broadband services beyond the campus and its learning centers.

“We want to make sure our communities are taken care of,” he told The Sopris Sun. “Broadband is pretty important in economic development opportunities.”

When English pointed out that Mesa County is not going for the opt-out alternative, Kruse confirmed it and said that Mesa County might take a legislative route to solving its problems — working to get the state

termed “this disastrous free-trade agreement of Obama’s,” the Trans Pacific Partnership or TPP. “There seems to have been, in the last 40 years, this idea that free trade helps everyone,” he said dismissively, opining that what “free trade” really does is depress wages in the U.S. and causes jobs to be shipped overseas.

Beinstein exhibits what seems to be an encyclopedic knowledge of the U.S. Constitution and politics, though he admits he is a little less knowledgeable about certain locally important issues, such as an effort to win federal Wild and Scenic Designation for 39 miles of the Crystal River near Carbondale.

He said he hopes to defeat Tipton in the primary, clearing the stage for what he predicted would be a “very civil” contest with the Democratic challenger, Gail Schwartz of Crested Butte (see related story.)

Internet challenges One of those attending the meeting, businesswoman Carla Ostberg of Missouri Heights near Carbondale, said she was at the meeting to learn about the possibilities of broadband service to her home.

“I'm here because I have internet challenges and have run out of options,” she told Kruse and Burkholder.

A designer of septic systems, she said her internet service is satellite based and does not meet her needs, particularly in terms of making use of many of the services and functions available on the ’net that she cannot connect to.

Kruse told Ostberg that her firm has been hired, in part, to come up with what she termed “broadband friendly” policies for the two client counties, such as arranging to put “shadow con-

duit” in newly dug trenches for electric or telephone utilities.

A shadow conduit, Kruse explained, is one that is empty when it is laid out, but which would be ready for new high-speed cable installation should that become available.

She also told those at the meeting that it is likely the ultimate solution for Garfield and Mesa Counties could well be a “hybrid approach” involving the use of fiber-optic cable and wireless, possibly microwave towers to provide connections in the mountainous region.

The two county governments primarily are exploring the potential for public-private partnerships, Kruse said of the Garfield-Mesa joint venture.

One of the citizens at the meeting, retired aerospace worker Bob Lucas and an early board member on the Rofintug internet service provider in the Roaring Fork Valley, asked Kruse about the timing of NEO Connect’s work.

Cody Lyon -- a former Carbondale resident and Dos Gringos employee -- has taken her artistic talent and laid it on the table tops at the restaurant for a new mouth-watering experience that patrons can enjoy. Lyon, who now resides in Dove Creek, was commissioned by restaurant owners Nelson and Julie Oldham to paint 11 table tops, which she accomplished in only four days.

The individual works of art are unique in their subject matter but are all done in acrylics, a medium that Lyon had never worked with before. “This is my first attempt at acrylics and they’re not as forgiving as oils. You have to work a lot faster but I want to do more of it,” she said. The palette-and-knife artist only used brushes

for her backgrounds.

Lyon said that each tabletop is different and she had no idea what she was going to paint on any of them until she actually started. “It just comes out,” she said, adding that most of her inspiration comes from horses. She is involved with equinefacilitated work at Buffalo Woman Ranch in Dove Creek, and attributes the fact that she feels more grounded and open-minded about her art, to that work.

Most of Lyon’s artwork hangs in galleries and more recently in restaurants as well. She was also just commissioned by “Alex & Ani” to do the artwork for their new home décor store back East. “This is an honor and a huge opportunity for Lyon Art,” she said.

An anonymous artist used the Carbondale Library chalkboard to scoop most of the media in regard to Monday night’s Strawberry Moon.

This work of art went up on Sunday or Monday to alert the town of a phenomenon not seen since 1967: the summer solstice coinciding with the Strawberry Moon. According to published reports, June’s full moon was sonamed in the U.S. by the Algonquin tribes, because it occurs at the height of the strawberry harvest.

According to AccuWeather.com, the next time the summer solstice coincides with the Strawberry Moon will be 2062.

Grease Monkey

I drop my girlfriend’s car off to get the air-conditioner recharged. “35 to 40 minutes,” the guy says, so I wander through the parking lots looking for anything that isn’t dead. I find a red dirt trail leading up the hill behind the Wal mart. It’s a beautiful spring day: seventy degrees, cloudless sky, a light breeze swaying the grasses, the blue faces of the wild flax turned to the sun and dancing.

At the top of the slope, another trail meets mine, perpendicularly, and there, at the juncture, lies a homeless camp: brown tarps, bottles and cans, garbage bags, green sleeping bag in shreds, a black desk chair on wheels tucked in the shade of a scrub oak. I contemplate sitting on the chair and reading Hochschild’s, “Spain in Our Hearts,” but I press on in search of a spot more pristine.

I turn right, heading south. Fifty yards on, I see a man in an official-looking, neon-green vest with reflective stripes, coming up another trail that angles into

mine. He carries, in his left hand, some strange object, like a radar gun or a miniature MRI machine used for examining prairie dogs or maybe lost birds. Feeling guilty, I ask if this is a hiking trail. He tells me it used to be, tells me the trail dead ends in the direction I’m going, tells me to watch out for bums. He says it was pretty good mountain biking at one time. “This way, you can go all the way to Palmer.” He tells me to watch out for weirdos. I thank him and move on.

I pass a few more camps, mostly piles of trash, but at least one containing a standing but ratty tent. I find a rock to sit on. Last month I quit my job to write poetry. As the sun warms the back of my head, I wonder how long it will take for me to transform from a high school math teacher into a bum. I’m glad I found this place. I will keep it mind for that day, in the not too distant future, when I wake to find that I have become a weirdo.
