It’s time to prepare for wildfire season Click on garco911.org

By Ron Leach It’s that time of year again and wildfire season is upon us. My hope is to provide you with knowledge and resources to prepare your family and home for the wildfire season. Comfort comes from knowledge and it is my goal to relieve some of the anxiety you may be feeling.

As a volunteer organization supported by a paid staff, the members of the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District (CRFPD) are here to serve you. Please do not hesitate to call with questions or concerns you may have.

Here are some general guidelines and steps to take, followed by valuable resources. These “pre-fire activities” can save your life and property.

The first thing everyone in the district should do is register with www.garco911.org/ens.html and/or www.pitkinalert.org. You will then be notified in case of an evacuation. Know-

ing where to go and how to get there will be different for everyone. These local alerts will guide you as to the appropriate course of action under the unique circumstances of the emergency. There are times when fleeing the area may not be the best option. Having a designated meeting place is a good idea.

Consult with your neighbors in advance of a wildfire emergency.

Property mitigation is a good way to minimize potential damage from wildfires.

Property mitigation includes such things as: removing combustibles from your home and garage or outbuildings. You should consider underground burial of propane tanks. Keep wood piles at least 30 feet from your home.

Trees and shrubs are sources of fuel for wildfires. Prune and trim so that you have a minimum of 6 to 10 feet of ground clearance.

Remove debris from gutters, eaves, porches and under decks.

Part of the planning or preparation process requires that you know all routes for egress from your home and neighborhood. Emergency ladders for escape from second story

homes is a good idea. Know all roads in all directions for escape from your local area. Remember that in some circumstances, once you leave, local authorities may not permit you to re-enter. What plans have you made for the care of animals on your property? Know where you can take horses and other large animals in case of an emergency. Assemble in advance an emergency “Go-Bag” that should contain goggles, or glasses, long sleeve shirts and pants, food and water, and first-aid supplies. Also consider taking all of your important papers such as: home insurance, passports, birth certificates, etc. For more detailed information consult websites such as http://www.readyforwildfire.org/emergency_supply_kit; and http://www.firewise.org/.

There are fire experts available to present programs, check with your local fire agency if your HOA or organization are interested. Again, if you need guidance with the resources provided or have questions regarding an emergency situation, please call us at 963-2491.

Whether you’re 1 or 91, the Carbondale Recreation Department has something to offer you. Won’t you come recreate with us and participate in some of our fun, physical and mostly outdoor summer activities?

Every second week of the month in the Sopris Sun we’ll share with how you can participate in many of our recreation program offerings. And if staying in shape and having a desire to pursue a physically fit lifestyle is your goal, consider getting an admission punch pass or membership to the Carbondale Recreation & Community Center.

This week it was announced that the town of Carbondale came in 28th place overall out of 181 cities that participated in the annual Colorado LiveWell “Get Movin’ Challenge.”

Carbondale came in first of all six Garfield County communities, with 25 participants averaging 50:10 minutes of daily exercise time during the month of May. Moving ahead with what we’re currently offering the community we have:

• For our preschool kids, ages 1-8, Motion Mondays every week from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. This is a parent supervised program that includes our bounce house, scooters, obstacle courses, mini trampoline, parachute games and more. Kids are encouraged to bring any wheeled vehicle they wish to ride in the gym (bikes, trikes, scooters, etc).

Then on the third Monday of the month, June 16, we offer Water Fun Day in conjunction with Motion Monday. There will be water balloons, a water table, slip-n-slide, kiddie pool, squirt guns, chalk art and bubbles.

• For ages 3-15, we have our Child & Youth Mini Triathlon Series with our first event on June 21 at 10 a.m. Depending on age category, participants will swim 25 to 200 meters in the Carbondale pool, bike a half lap to six laps around Sopris Park and run a half lap to four laps around the park. This is a great introductory experience for the first time triathlete.

Looking for more competition? Whether you’re a competitor or a spectator, be sure to check out our third annual Bonedale Skate

Revival Skateboard Contest & Skate Jam at the Carbondale skate park on June 14. There will be multiple age categories for those 5 and up. There will be music and prizes as well as food prepared by 2 Dudes Grill Shack.

Whether you skate or not you will definitely want to check out the action.

Do you have a daredevil in the house? Or a child that likes to be pushed adventurewise? Our Rock Warriors Camp is an intensive two-day indoor climbing course that prepares climbers for a third day of outdoor, top-rope climbing on real rock. For ages 9 and up, this program runs June 16-18. We will also offer a one-day exciting excursion to the CMC Ropes Course up at Spring Valley on June 27. Ages 8 and up are welcome on this trip.

Do you have a teenager in the house looking for meaningful summer employment? We will be offering a second round of lifeguard training at the Carbondale pool. Class participants must successfully pass a swim test and then complete 25 hours of training with SUMMER RECREATION page 19

Please obey bike rules Dear Editor: Bicycling season has begun. For those of you who know me, you may find me out there peddling alongside of you, as I love to ride too! With that being said, I have some concerns regarding the following things: • Cyclists failing to obey traffic devices; • Cyclists going the wrong way down the street; • Cyclists riding carelessly without

due safety; • Adult cyclists riding unsafely with their children following their example.

For the children, there is no better way to teach them about safe driving than by teaching them to obey traffic laws. The kids will follow our example. If we all want a safe bicycling community, we must demonstrate this by our own actions. The board of trustees has directed our department to take a harder line with cyclists violating traffic laws.

Colorado state law has made a few changes for cycling law. One of the changes permits cyclists to ride in the crosswalks. It is always safer to walk your bike in a crosswalk than to ride it across. Questions surface over Surls selection process Town manager Jay Harrington told The Sopris Sun the trustees expect to sign agreements with Surls to accept ownership of “Sewing the Future” at their meeting on June 24 or July 8.

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Correspondent The town trustees’ decision to accept a free piece of James Surls’ sculpture for the intersection of Highway 133 and Main Street doesn’t appear to have been a roundabout process.

With little or no public discussion or notice, the trustees voted 6-0 on July 23, 2013, to move forward with accepting a free piece of sculpture — sight unseen — from Surls.

Going back seven years though, the Carbondale Public Art Commission first pitched the idea to Surls about him donating a piece of work to be placed in the roundabout at Highway 133 and Main Street, if it were ever built. Surls said yes.

Today, with private fundraising under way to solicit the final $50,000 to pay off Surls’ cost to create the 20-foot-tall metal sculpture, some residents are writing letters to the editor and contacting trustees, asking why the public wasn’t asked whether they wanted this or any other Surls piece in the town’s most prominent location.

“Sewing the Future” “Was there a town meeting to present other examples of sculptures for the roundabout we missed?” asked Sam Hayes and Sue Bacon in a letter to the editor in The Sopris Sun’s May 29 issue.

Surls, an internationally known sculptor, works out of his studio on Missouri Heights after moving to the Roaring Fork Valley from Texas in the 1990s.

Trustee Allyn Harvey brought up the selection process at Tuesday night’s meeting and mayor Stacey Bernot said the town did advertise to determine if any other artists were interested in donating a permanent piece of art. No artist came forward and there was a “loud voice for the Surls piece.”

Harvey countered, “There was not a public process, there was not a conversation … about this very public space.” He said he’s been getting feedback that is not necessarily anti-Surls, but that the process “stunk” and people are objecting to how quickly the trustees agreed to a Surls piece.

From staff memos, minutes to trustees meetings and other sources, The Sopris Sun has pieced together a timeline for much of what transpired from the time

CPAC first approached Surls to Tuesday night’s discussion.

The sculpture idea lay dormant for several years until the Colorado Department of Transportation finalized plans to widen Highway 133 and build a roundabout at Main Street this summer. With Highway 133 plans ready, CPAC discussed the Surls gift to the town at its meetings on May 1, Sept. 18, Dec. 4 of 2013, and on Jan. 5, 2014.

CPAC’s sculpture proposal hit the trustees’ collective desk on July 23, 2013 under a meeting agenda item that addressed roundabout landscaping and art.

Town manager Harrington’s memo said if the town doesn’t landscape the roundabout’s center, it would “most likely” be concrete. “This is not what the Comp Plan or Town staff envisions for the gateway to Carbondale,” said Harrington’s memo. The memo explained that it’s not practical for the Art aRound Town program to use the roundabout for a rotating piece of art but that it’s the staff’s opinion that the roundabout should, at some level, include art as a centerpiece. “Carbondale is recognized for our community’s commitment to art,” SURLS SCULPTURE page 13

CCAH/DI snag old library John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Despite apparent misgivings on the part of some members, the Board of Trustees on Tuesday gave its nod to the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities (CCAH) and its partner, Dance Initiative (DI), to take over the recently vacated Gordon Cooper Library building.

The vote to accept the CCAH/DI proposal for gallery space and dance studios came down to 5-1 (Trustee A.J. Hobbs recused himself because he was involved in one of the proposals). The sole dissenting vote came from Trustee Frosty Merriott, who felt the entire selection process was mishandled.

“Good for us,” he told his fellow trustees in sarcastic tones, “we managed to divide the community twice” and forced “important constituencies” to compete for the right to move into the town-owned building.

Merriott was lumping together the current process and one conducted last year, in which the winning proposal was for a museum to house the artworks of renowned sculptor and Carbondale area resident James Surls. The organizers of the Surls proposal ultimately backed out of the deal.

Merriott and others said that, this time around, the town itself should have come up with a proposed use of the building, then invited proposals from anyone interested in working with the town’s plans.

Others on the board disagreed, however.

Trustee Allyn Harvey, who voted in favor of the CCAH/DI partnership, pointed out that the current process has yielded good ideas and engendered a broad public debate about the use of the publicly-owned former library space.

“I like this process,” he said, adding, “I think it’s hard and unsettling,” but it seemed to work well for Carbondale.

This was the third time the trustees had

met over the current crop of proposals from four different groups — the CCAH/DI partnership; the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce; a plan by Hobbs and a partner, Trevor Brown, to turn the building into a nontraditional cafe and gathering space; and a proposal by Carbondale resident Jim Breasted to use the building as a low-cost hostel for visitors, transient employees and others priced out of the valley’s traditional hotels and real estate.

Several trustees spoke up in favor of a broader collaboration, one that could include the chamber as well as CCAH and Dance Initiative, but the proponents themselves responded that there is not enough square footage in the building to effectively accommodate all three organizations.

A last-minute flurry of letters from the public gave overwhelming support for either the CCAH/DI proposal or the application from the Chamber. None of the letters included in the trustee packet on Tuesday voiced support for either the cafe proposal or the hostel idea.

But several of the trustees, after voting to select the CCAH/DI proposal, urged the chamber, along with Breasted and the cafe proponents, to keep working on their plans.

“I think it behooves us to look at what the chamber’s needs are,” said the mayor. “We’re all aware of where our funding comes from (sales tax revenues are the town’s major source of income). I think acknowledgment of that importance is key.”

“I’d love to see the cafe and the hostel end up in the Six89 building (a former restaurant at the corner of Seventh and Main streets), but I don’t own it,” Harvey said suggestively at one point.

Chip and seal project concludes Sopris Sun Staff Report This year’s chip and seal project recently concluded and went “very well,” according to the town’s weekly report “Only one complaint was received.”

In other paraphrased news from the report (dated June 6): • Police officers have been making high volume traffic enforcement, addressing Highway 133 construction and its effects.

On June 5, officers made 53 traffic stops. The Police Department has been working closely with CDOT, Public Works and business owners to address problems as they arise.

• The new fences have been installed at Hillcrest (aka White Hill) and Evergreen cemeteries.

• The two bids received on the Highway 133 landscape project were not acceptable. Staff met with DHM and SGM to develop a strategy to rebid the project.

• Five proposals from design-build firms were received for the bike park project at North Face Park. The Bike, Pedestrian & Trails Commission, along with staff, have short-listed the top four firms who were slated for interviews on June 12.

• Four proposals from park master plan firms were received for the update of the new Parks, Recreation & Trails Comprehensive Master Plan. The Parks & Recreation Commission was scheduled to interview three firms at its June 11 meeting.

• Police officers handled the following incidents of note: Three DUI arrests, one vicious dog summons, one case of alleged domestic violence (suspect jailed), four vehicles were entered (no suspects), disorderly conduct (two were summoned), one burglary (under investigation).

• Planning has been working with Clarion on the updated schedule for the next steps with the Unified Development Code (UDC).

• Technical problems are continuing with the pump feeding the new screw press (at the waste water treatment plant). The

manufacturer’s representative has been on site to observe the problem and is working on a solution.

• The water line that was slated for replacement across west Main Street project does not need to be replaced, as it is ductile iron pipe and not cast iron pipe.

• Work is winding down on the GIS with Northline GIS. It is anticipated that staff will begin filling in some gaps this summer season to “line things up” in the field so an adjustment can be performed on the map with all the pipelines, streets and tree inventories.

• A bigger police presence was planned for First Friday, with foot and bicycle patrols. Also, RFTA is joining with the town to provide more head and tail lights to Carbondale cyclists who are riding without them.

• Water pressure at Gateway RV Park (at the intersection of Highway 82/133) was addressed; the filter elements were replaced after a year of service. Another set of filters has been ordered for stock.

• The Utilities Department concluded interviews for the maintenance positions and the operator position. The candidates selected are in the process of performing pre-employment checks. Staff has been busy with line locates and water plant operations as the utility staff transitions. Dennis Cooley will be retiring on June 20.

• The Finance Department has a candidate for the Accounting II/HR position. He is in the process of pre-employment screening and hopefully will be on board starting June 16.

• The opening night of the 12-week Carbondale Wild West Rodeo series was a successful start of the season, but was not a sell-out. Carbondale police officers attended and worked the rodeo. There were no apparent problems.

• The River Valley Ranch tennis courts were scheduled for resurfacing the week of June 9-13.

FRIDAY June 6 At 5:38 p.m. a stationary police officer observed a vehicle “thumping its stereo” as it approached the intersection of Village and Surrey roads. The driver said he only had a learner’s permit.

The officer then issued a citation for “prohibited noise” and called the driver’s mother to come pick him up.

FRIDAY June 6 At 10:47 p.m. an officer on bike patrol saw two men, whom he’d contacted earlier in the evening concerning the town’s open container ordinance, drinking tall boy PBRs on a bench at Fourth and Main. Police issued one of the men a citation for violating the ordinance, and noted in his report: “ … during the incident (the suspect) had an extremely poor attitude and kept mouthing off to officers.”

June’s First Friday delivers (again) There’s always something about the late afternoon light at the First Friday in June. The sun shines a spotlight down Main Street starting at about 5:30 p.m. or so and shadows extend farther and farther east as it sets behind the hills to the west. Carbondale being located in Colorado and all, good weather for June’s First Friday is not guaranteed but coming off iffy spring weather, there’s more than a 50/50 chance. For the second year in a row, the fire district rolled out its 100-foot ladder truck and the chamber of commerce organized a community group photo at Fourth and Main.

Other highlights included recorded music and salsa dancing (complete with lessons from instructor Ricardo Hernandez), street musicians and more.

Later in the evening, some bars and restaurants reported standing room only crowds.

Jaywalker buys e Blend, launches new era John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent For those in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, there are two constants in life once the recovery process has begun — the need to avoid having a drink, one day at a time, and the need for coffee to satisfy one’s oral fixation and to keep up the energy to stay off the booze.

And now the coffee and the sobriety are about to be blended, if readers will pardon the pun, in one establishment.

After three years of operations, The Blend coffee shop, 1150 Highway 133, is about to be taken over by Jaywalker Lodge, a for-profit alcoholism and addiction recovery center that opened its doors in 2005 and has spawned several ancillary facilities in Carbondale.

According to Wade Newsom, the 38year-old founder of the coffee shop, there is to be a “grand reopening” later in the summer to celebrate the change in management and, Newsom hopes, the continuation of what he described as the “wonderful, wonderful thing” he created and nurtured at the corner of Highway 133 and Garfield Avenue.

Newsom, who is married and lives in Carbondale, said he is not sure what he will do next, beyond a period of transition during which he will be helping Bobby Ferguson, founder and director of Jaywalker Lodge and the originator of the

merger plan, and the new manager on site, Adam Mink, an alumnus of the Jaywalker Lodge program.

Ferguson, originally from New York City, moved to the Roaring Fork Valley in 2003 with his wife, Andi, who had previously lived in Carbondale before hooking up with Bobby while the two were living in Minnesota.

Ferguson called himself “a prototypical jaywalker,” which he explained is a term used to describe drunks or drug addicts who have difficulty staying sober under traditional treatment programs and find themselves returning for treatment time and time again.

He said he did achieve sobriety finally after a treatment program in Minnesota, although the standard axiom among the recovery community is, “once an addict, always an addict,” meaning constant vigilance is needed to stay clean and sober for life.

Jaywalker’s start In 2004, with financial and other assistance from his wife’s family, Ferguson bought and remodeled the old Paper Chase building on Main Street, and converted it to the Jaywalker Lodge, which is run according to the principles of the wellknown 12-Step Program developed by Alcoholics Anonymous.

In addition, the Jaywalker Lodge has an office in the same building as The Blend,

and an outpatient facility in a former thirdgrade classroom at the Third Street Center.

Ferguson said he has a staff of about 40 full-time employees, half of when are alumni of the Jaywalker program.

During the trustees ensuing discussion on July 23, 2013, Bernot called the Surls sculpture a “tremendous gift” and said she would like to move the process forward.

Trustee Pam Zentmyer asked if a community discourse had taken place on the proposal and Harrington responded with a “no.” She then asked for a community-wide conversation to take place but then-trustee John Foulkrod said he didn’t want to have a community conversation and “the clock is ticking.”

Trustee Frosty Merriott said he has a vision for how it (the roundabout) should look and that the board was elected to lead. He said he’d talked to community members about the sculpture and it’s time to formalize a decision. “The sculpture will be the legacy of this board and it may help revitalize the downtown core,” the meeting minutes state.

In something that seldom if ever took place while the two served together, Foulkrod

made a motion to initiate a process for the town to accept a Surls piece for the roundabout, which Merriott seconded. The motion passed 6-0; Harvey was absent.

Sculpture’s symbolism Surls unveiled a scale model for “Sewing the Future” earlier this spring. In a fund-raising letter explaining his work, Surls said a “standing vase” sits on a five-to- seven-foot base. From the vase, which is a metaphoric symbol of the female, there are four primary symbolic elements. One of these is a thread of life that runs through three needles that represent deep parts of human nature, including art, science and philosophy. Other symbolic elements include the jewel, the flower and the tree. “All of these elements derive from the very nature that gives us our existence on earth,” Surls states in his letter. “It is my wish that Carbondale will grow to appreciate the significant meaning of the sym-

Bernot reiterated this is “a great opportunity to have as renowned an artist as Surls” volunteer to place his art in the roundabout, but she also conceded “it wasn’t a perfect process … we are open to criticism on that.”

“While I understand the necessity for the fundraising to occur, the obligation to the community to include them in how this design was chosen should have happened.”

Carbondale’s revolving loan fund invites applications Sopris Sun Staff Report

The Town of Carbondale Revolving Loan Fund, administered by the Roaring Fork Business Resource Council (RFBRC), is open for business (and new applicants). The fund exists to enhance the ability of local business owners to secure capital to ďŹ nance start-ups, operations or expansion. In addition to providing access to capital, the Revolving Loan Fund is designed to help stimulate job growth and retention. Loans generally range from $5,000 to $25,000 and are available to new or established businesses and organizations located within the town limits, accord-

ing to a press release.

Loans may be used for all sorts of business reasons including real estate acquisition, construction, and equipment, but not for the retirement of existing debt. Similar to other types of ďŹ nancing, loan fund interest rates vary depending on a variety of factors; ďŹ xed rates currently range from 3-10 percent.

To date the Town of Carbondale Revolving Loan Fund has assisted many local businesses, boasting a stellar overall repayment record. As loans are repaid the funds become available to new borrowers.

Working with perhaps 250-300 alums, Schneier said, the two oversee a large volunteer program that provides help to a range of local causes and nonproďŹ ts, as well as mentoring the alumni in their transition back into the general society and other types of assistance.

The coffee shop, Ferguson said, is something new for Jaywalker. “This, for us, is a signiďŹ cant departure from the ordinary,â€? and is a venture that he and Newsom cooked up over the course of

the last year or so. “We wanted to create a hub, in terms of a retail, social venture, that connects our recovery community ‌ to the Carbondale community at large,â€? Ferguson said. “As an addict I was a drain on society,â€? he continued, and the coffee shop/volunteer program is a way to reverse that effect.

All proceeds from sales in the shop are to be donated to area causes and non-proďŹ ts, Ferguson said, though the exact list of beneďŹ ciary organizations is still being drawn up. “Our business is substance abuse treatment,â€? Ferguson said, “and the coffee shop is not a money-making venture, it’s a community building venture.â€? “I, personally, couldn’t be more excited,â€?

Summer Solstice: It’s 15 hours of sunlight June in Colorado has always felt like someone put the remote on fast forward: snow retreats up slopes, aspen leaves suddenly unfurl, and the sun pushes towards its longest day — June 21. One day, kicking steps up a local peak seems like a good idea. The next day the snow has turned into a muddy slip n’ slide of avalanche lilies and marmot dens. Stinging nettles grow from nubbins to thigh whackers. Flowers bloom. Hummingbirds twitter. First Friday nonsense ensues.

If you are truly a shredder/board-centric you should be able to find some nice caches of snow on north facing slopes well into August, but why would you want to venture so far away from big inflatable rafts and coolers full of beer? Dusty-chain rattling descents on your bike?

A long time ago, as in, like, two years ago, or maybe three, I knew someone who believed picking herbs and flowers during the Summer Solstice was important because they held a healing energy above and beyond any normal healing properties. Carbondale’s future: A UDC outline critique (Editor’s note: Carbondale is in the process of drafting a new zoning code called the UDC, which the town trustees expect to approve early next year).

In the big picture, it becomes clearer by the day that our world is becoming a more difficult place to live.

Should this infinitesimal speck of earth called Carbondale pay any attention? What should the 6,000-7,000 people of Carbondale do about what many serious people see as a looming catastrophe? I believe we have a shared responsibility to fight against the worldwide problem and also to begin to build “resiliency” into this community to survive the coming changes.

When a ship encounters a massive storm it does not put on more sail. It will jettison weight that would drag it down in heavy seas. Openings are sealed and braced.

The crew is made fit and don their protective wear. There are dark clouds on the horizon.

Like a ship sailing in sunshine, it is difficult to realize that the time to prepare is now. Carbondale’s proposed UDC (unified development code) outline is a very long list of suggestions that all beg questions. No town board will have the patience to sift through such a document to create the tool that is now needed. The elected officials will defer to the hired experts for the language and the structure. The hired experts are committed to creating a grateful customer and will try to strike a balance between the usual concerns of the business community and those like me with increasing urgency about our future.

The consultants have listed their goals in “Elements of Successful Code Revision Projects.” Their first goal is “Citizens and code users should have opportunities for meaningful input before changes are set in stone.” You can see the dichotomy.

My “input” takes the form of asking the Carbondale

Board of Trustees to think of a different kind of code process; it would start with a different name: Unified “Improvement” Code. Putting the word “development” in the title, in fact putting that word in the name of the department that will implement the code, presupposes that development SHOULD occur. Changing that name will require a paradigm shift of a very high magnitude. The dominant American paradigm — growth — is like air to us; like water to fish.

I submit that the only acceptable standard for any construction or development should be, for the community as a whole, to make a better place to live. Not just better in the short run, but for decades. I’ve read that the Iroquois American Indians planned seven generations ahead. The applicant should have the burden of proof. Will the quality of the lives of the residents improve or decrease? Will the community be sustainable? Sustainable, by the way, is not just a color arrived at by mixing the colors yellow and blue. Nor is “sustainable” something that can be achieved at 15 percent. It either is, or is not. You are floating, or you are not.

Traditional test The traditional test of development has been: how profitable? A prospective developer often claims that without the property tax waiver (name the rule change) they will have to go elsewhere. No problem — go. Virtually all new construction is already subsidized in a myriad of ways by public expense, be it roads, utilities, schools, police, fire, housing or public health.

One threshold test ought to be that new development reduces carbon emissions of the community. A carport with a solar roof and plug-ins for electric cars might pass that test. It is customary that new buildings connect their sewers to the town mains. However, systems are available

that can reduce such waste to almost zero.

Newer ideas A number of newer code ideas deal with orientation of buildings for solar collection. I would go much farther.

I would propose that no structure or development is allowed that is not just energy neutral, but must add net energy to the local grid.

Various agencies are predicting a doubling of the population of Carbondale and Colorado in just a few years.

There is now concern we don’t have enough water for the current populations. I propose putting a limit on Carbondale’s total population. There is no “right” that guarantees that any person can live wherever they want.

We see or hear the word “sustainable” more and more; some have called it “sustain-a-babble.” In reality, very few communities, especially on the Western Slope of Colorado, are remotely sustainable. Virtually everything we use in Carbondale on a daily basis is imported. In a sense, even our water, received from melted snow, comes from some place else. And most of the water that passes through the valley belongs to others. Do not think that you can “grow” your way to sustainability?

Obviously, my suggestions seem radical. But recognize that very urgent warnings have been out for at least 40 years. The authors of “The Limits of Growth” (1972) included some scenarios that — if started back then — could have made necessary and successful changes. We are way, way behind. We need to put this ship in order — right now.

Root to Petal equals a lifetime of experience S. Michael Jundt Cassandra Cederlund, owner of “Root to Petal Botanicals,” has sewn and grown from coast to coast before putting down roots in Basalt.

“I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest,” says Cassandra. “I bounced around from Washington, Montana, Oregon, Northern California and Hawaii until I was 19. I finished a fine art degree in Seattle then moved to upstate New York to complete a horticulture degree. I worked as a historical gardener, organic gardener and cut flower grower for four years while on the east coast.”

After New York, Cassandra moved to Lake Tahoe where gardening jobs, especially historical gardening, were few and far between. So she headed to Sacramento and worked in an art gallery and high-end floral boutique, making dramatic designs for restaurants and weddings.

“Once the heat of spring hit I moved back to Tahoe,” says Cassandra, “and started working for a three generation owned floral shop. There I became the head wedding designer for almost four years.” The shop was known for its upscale work from Reno to San Francisco, doing weddings even in Chicago.

Prior to moving to the Roaring Fork Valley, Cassandra spent time in Boulder where she finished her master herbalist certification. “Boulder was fun,” says Cassandra. “I landed a job within 12 hours and spent time at Boulder’s number one flower shop as their production manager and head wedding designer.”

Continuing, Cassandra says, “Love brought me here to the valley. Love being a passion for the land, the seasons and the people. The valley always felt like the right place for me to grow roots and be present. I was long overdue to own my

Drink up Dear Editor: Hey all parents and friends of kids in the Roaring Fork Valley, there’s an outrageously fun learning event coming up on June 14. It’s Lemonade Day RFV! We met a woman at a table with information during the Kid’s Block Party and decided to do a stand. We’ve had a meeting and decided on a name — “Lemon Heads” — and a location. They chose to set up in front of Dr. Ben Makin’s veterinary clinic on Main Street in Carbondale. It’s a great location but needs some weeds pulled, so the boys agreed that they would like to clean up the space in lieu of rent. A small task, but an important lesson. It costs for a good location.

Saturday, we have a work day to pull weeds and make Lemon Head hats and fliers. We have a schedule that is easy to keep and the boys would like to use all proceeds to start another project they have been planning all winter. Keep your eyes peeled for Kids T’s later in the summer. These guys

(ages 9, 7, 5 and 3) are going to make some awesome T-shirts for their next venture into the business world.

The thing is, there are so many places to set up a stand and the folks at RFV Lemonade Day supply the kids with a backpack of information, including lessons that help them to progress through all stages of preparation.

It’s easy!

Let’s talk hemp Dear Editor: The recent passing of a provision in the 2014 Farm Bill allowing agricultural hemp to be grown in certain states, presents an exciting new opportunity for the Roaring Fork Valley and rural surroundings. Now for the first time since WWII it’s legal to grow industrial hemp in Colorado, and many farmers have already planted their first crops.

Hemp is the non-psychoactive version of the cannabis plant. It is NOT marijuana. It’s a versatile, sustainable, economically profitable agricultural crop that is grown in 30 countries. China is the biggest producer of hemp and the U.S. is the largest importer.

American businesses use various parts of the hemp plant in manufacturing clothing, building products, paper, food, and pet bedding, among thousands of other products.

But all of that hemp must be imported, which drives up costs and reduces profit, so manufacturers are desperate for Americangrown hemp.

With the agricultural land and pioneer spirit we have here in the Rocky Mountains, it seems a natural fit for a thriving industrial hemp operation. By growing and processing hemp locally, we have the potential to revitalize our agricultural community and our local economy with a new source of income and employment.

People who are poised to enter into this profitable new venture are landowners, farmers, investors, clothing and food manufacturers, salespeople, merchants, and anyone interested in being part of this sustainable local agricultural and economic revolution.

Because this is a new industry with no recent precedent, organizers, fundraisers, attorneys, accountants, publicists, and more are also needed to explore and develop a successful business model.

With care and compassion Dear Editor: I want to take just a few minutes of your day to tell you about a very special group of people in this valley. I am speaking about the men and women that make up the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District, of which I have been a proud member for 10 years.

The fire department is made up of a combination of volunteers and career firefighter/EMTs. Whenever there is talk about the fire protection district it is often about recent fires, but the reality is we respond to more calls for emergency medical service than any other type of call. These calls can range from simple, where we are helping an elderly person who has fallen, to major trauma from auto accidents. We have even delivered babies as part of emergency medical services.

Much has been talked about over the last six months regarding the fire protection district’s budget. I do think these are important discussions, but if money is the only thing talked about, the public is not getting the whole story.

There is so much more to the story of the fire protection district. That story is about the care and compassion that every member of this department gives to every person we come in contact with. How can anyone put a dollar value on the personal and passionate way we care for this community?

Most people living in the fire protection distract may never call for EMS, but if you find yourself in a position where you pick up that phone and dial 911 you should feel confident that you or your loved one will receive world class care. We are currently providing paramedic and advanced life support level of care. Unfortunately that high level of care is impossible to provide with volunteers. Paramedics and ALS (advanced life support) providers are truly a specialty and require in-

dividuals that are career professionals. We provide care and compassion to residents of this community often at the very lowest point in their lives often dealing with tremendous pain and suffering. The professionalism by both volunteers and staff is reassuring and comforting to both patients and loved ones under difficult circumstances.

The fire district is made up of the best people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Every individual associated with

this department has their heart in the right place and only wants to serve this community. I know money is tight and we all deserve to have a fire district that is run in a manner that is fitting to the economics of the times. But, we also want, deserve and need to keep the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection Distract strong and capable of providing that paramedic level EMS service.
