How it happened Dear Editor: I have followed the recent discussion about the placement of a James Surls sculpture in the soon to be constructed roundabout at the intersection of Main Street and Highway 133, and would like to respond to the letter last week that questioned how the decision came about.

Last July 23, the Carbondale Board of Trustees discussed the issue that had been a pet project of Jim Calaway for some time.

He first made this idea public during the campaign to approve the Village at Crystal River project that was defeated by public vote in 2012, and apparently brought up the idea again in a meeting with trustees at Surls’ studio during the process to decide which proposal would be awarded the use of the old library building.

The approval was driven by trustees John Foulkrod and Frosty Merriott, with strong support from Mayor Stacey Bernot and trustee Elizabeth Murphy. Trustee Pam

Zentmyer was the only member who expressed a desire to have a public discussion on the selection, but she was strongly opposed by trustees Foulkrod and Merriott.

There was no public discussion allowed during the meeting and the selection was unanimously approved.

Thanks for the support Dear Editor: We are writing to acknowledge the depth of support we received through the process of applying for and achieving the re-

naming of Bull Pasture Park to Nuche Park in honor of the first peoples of the valley.

A special note of thanks for support from Roz and Tom Turnbull, former owners of the property and to all the neighbors of the park who verbalized support. There are many other folks behind the scenes who have been waiting for this name change to happen and are holding pieces of a plan for park improvements that will showcase natural plants and bushes that provided food, medicines and shelter for the Nuche over the millennia.

The Carbondale Board of Trustees officially received the recommendation for the renaming from the Parks and Recreation Committee at the trustee meeting on May 27. The vote was unanimous to change the name to Nuche Park. (Nuche is pronounced “Nooch”).

There will be a “soft” dedication of the park on Saturday, June 21. O. Roland McCook from the Northern Ute tribe will help LETTERS page 7

It’s a beautiful sight. That’s what shareholders in the Spring Park Reservoir are saying now that a primary irrigation water source is full for the first time in two years.

Mountain Meadows Ditch Company President Felix Tornare told The Sopris Sun the reservoir is full because of this winter’s heavy snowpack and resulting runoff. “This is like a normal year used to be,” he said. There are about 50 ditch company shareholders on Missouri Heights and they are allotted water based on the number of shares they hold. When it’s full like this, the reservoir is about 20 feet deep. Fire board discusses budgets and more in Redstone

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer Not that the members need to pack a suitcase, but the Carbondale Fire District Board of Directors are slated to discuss a passel of topics when it goes on the road for a monthly meeting at the Redstone Fire Station on June 11.

Among the items listed on the draft agenda: • The 2014 budget; • Planning for the 2015 budget; • Revising the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District’s bylaws; • An election update.

The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.; the Redstone Fire Station is located at the north end of Redstone Boulevard.

Incumbents Gene Schilling and Michael Kennedy, and new board member Carl Smith, recently took their oath of office. This will be Smith’s first board meeting and six of the draft agenda items are at his request.

“I’m excited,” said Smith, who has served as a staff member and volunteer with the district. “ … this is a great opportunity to move forward.”

Smith pointed out that four of the five board members are former firefighters with the district. “Everyone is aware of what must be done.”

In the May election, Smith received the most votes, followed by Kennedy. Schilling edged out sitting board member Mark Chain by five votes. Challenger Gary McElwee finished fifth, 12 votes behind Schilling.

Smith told The Sopris Sun that as a new board member, he wants an update of the 2014 budget, in part to get a clear idea of picture of the reserve fund. He’s also proposing for the board to receive a budget update from staff at every monthly meeting.

Last December, the board slashed the budget for 2014 by $700,000, after voters shot down a mill levy ballot question that could have doubled property taxes. In response, the board appointed a 17-member citizen advisory committee to review the 2014 budget and make recommendation for 2015. He expects the discussion on the 2015 budget will be philosophical rather than to look at specifics.

Smith said fire chief Ron Leach has already done an “excellent job” of briefing the citizens advisory committee on the 2014 budget. From there, Smith the district is moving toward a multi-year forecast. “The foundation work has begun,” he said.

The draft agenda calls for a discussion on staff presenting monthly reports from all five of the district’s divisions: Operations (which includes fires, ambulance calls, river rescues and more), Training, Fire Prevention, Administration and Maintenance.

Smith pointed to the Maintenance Division to explain some of the complexities involved in running a fire district, especially one that provides fire and ambulance service, and also relies on volunteer firefighters.

The Maintenance Division not only maintains each fire station and more than 30 pieces of equipment, but is also in charge of

on-going testing of equipment. “There are a whole host of things that must be tested,” Smith said. “ … Like hose testing. There are miles of (fire) hose.”

Smith said that monthly reports will not only help the board, but also the public in understanding how the district operates. “ … they (reports) show that here are some of the services the public is getting … ,” Smith said.

The draft agenda also calls for the board to discuss revising its bylaws. Smith said the bylaws were drafted and approved in 1955 and apparently; they have undergone little or no updating since. One draft agenda item calls for discussion of the district’s website content and a citizen request to post minutes previous to 2012, but the bylaws were written before the Internet even existed. Smith would also like for the board to discuss a new bylaw that states the board cannot take a vote on anything that is not on a meeting agenda. “That (bylaw provision) is pretty common,” he said.

In other fire district news: • Jeff Wadley withdrew his application for a recount for May’s board election. In an e-mail to The Sopris Sun, Wadley said in part: “The recount will not address the poor perceptions around the election procedures.

The five election judges did a great job and there is no need to reconfirm by a recount their portion of the election.” Wadley and others said they had concerns about what they said were possible irregularities during the vote count at the Carbondale Fire Sta-

tion on election night. At the board’s May 14 meeting, the board had virtually no comment on concerns about possible irregularities after McElwee asked twice about them.

An election update is one draft agenda item for the June 11 meeting.

• The Task Force Committee will meet at the Carbondale Fire Station on June 16 and continue discussion on the 2015 budget and related financial recommendations.

Sheriff calls off search for kayaker Sopris Sun Staff Report The Gunnison County sheriff has called off the search for a kayaker missing on the Crystal River since Saturday.

Sheriff Rick Besecker said he called off the search “due to extreme water flow conditions” for cold water dive and traverse teams but periodic searches from the bank will continue.

“At this point the victim’s chance of survival is considered unrealistic,” Besecker said in a press release.

Late last week, Besecker identified the kayaker as Uriah Shaffer, 39.

Shaffer’s kayak overturned about two miles up the Crystal River from the Highway 133 turnoff to Marble.

Ten personnel from the Carbondale Fire District assisted in the search.

Suspect handed to new bike patrol officers Sopris Sun Staff Report Carbondale police officers Nino Santiago, Gretchen Stock-Bell and Robb Windham graduated from a 32-hour IPMBA Bike Patrol certification course that Carbondale hosted, according to town manager Jay Harrington’s weekly report. Also attending were officers from Basalt, Garfield County and Rifle. Harrington noted that during a night section of the class on Wednesday, the officers had just completed training in bicycle/pedestrian contacts at Glenwood Springs Middle School. “The class was contacted by both Garfield deputies and Glenwood officers who were looking for a suspect in the area wanted in an assault who had ran from the scene on foot,” Harrington’s report said.

At the conclusion of the training, the seven students (in uniform) and two instructors on bicycles found and collected the suspect for Glenwood Police Department. “The timing could not have been better for the class. …

Rifle had their own pending assault case against the same suspect.”

On a related note, a Carbondale police officer had a brief pursuit with a motorcycle that was called off a few weeks ago. The officer’s subsequent investigation yielded a confession from a suspect who painted his motorcycle a different color after the chase.

In other paraphrased items from the report: • The chip and seal operation is pro-

gressing as planned. The majority of the chips have been removed and the seal coat will be scheduled next.

• Creative Stripes, the town’s street painting contractor, will begin stripping streets on June 7.

• The mowing crew had to play catchup after the Memorial Day holiday. Their mowing schedule is tight this year. There was an irrigation pump station break down that caused some concerns at the Community Garden but the parks crew acted quickly to get it repaired.

• The town received five proposals from design-build firms that wish to be selected for the bike park project at North Face Park. The Bike, Pedestrian & Trails Commission, along with staff, will be reviewing the proposals and short-listing firms that they would like to interview.

• Request for proposals (RFP’s) were due this week from consulting firms who wish to be considered for developing the 10-year update to the Town’s Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan.

• The town stage and tent, along with an ADA portable toilet, was scheduled for installation at the 4th Street Plaza Park in preparation for the Carbondale Farmers Market and other events in the plaza.

• If approved by River Valley Ranch, pickleball court lines will be painted on

those tennis courts following completion of their resurfacing the week of June 9.

Funding for the additional court lines will be through a donation from the old Roaring Fork Valley Tennis Club.

• Recreation programs starting the week of June 2-6 include: Start Smart Soccer and Start Smart Baseball, Motion Mondays, and skateboard lessons.

• Six men’s softball teams registered for the league, which began June 2 at Bill Hanks Softball Field.

• In Gateway RV Park campground utilization last week: Total spots available 126, booked nights were 26 for an occupancy percentage of 20 percent. Gateway RV Park reservations for the week of May 30 through June 6 are five sites with 10 people.

• Sales tax collections finished May at 15 percent more than last year. Year-todate is tracking at a 10.9 percent increase.

“We will see if this trend continues through the Highway 133 Project,” the report states.

• From May 22 at midnight until May 28 at 11:59 pm, Carbondale police officers handled 242 calls for service.

MONDAY June 2 At 7:22 p.m. officers responded to a call from River Valley Ranch about a neighbor who was “hitting golf balls” at another neighbor’s house. The golf ball hitter said he did not plan to stop hitting balls but would “try to avoid houses.”

Officers explained the to the golfer that he would be cited for criminal mischief if he cased any damage.

MONDAY June 2 At 2:41 p.m. police received a call about two males drinking in a Highway 133 parking lot. Officers located the vehicle but it crossed the town limits sign on south Highway 133 before they could contact it.

MONDAY June 2 At 5:22 p.m. a citizen called police and reported two juveniles were cursing at the North Face Park skate park. When she asked them not to curse they continued cursing. Officers located the alleged cursers downtown on Main Street and gave them a warning “that they would be banned from the skate park” if they continued using foul language.

MONDAY June 2 At 6:13 p.m. officers assisted the fire district with a transformer fire in an alley on Euclid. Upon arrival, officers found no fire but discovered “ … a very crisp crow tripped the breaker.” Residents reported to The Sun that power was out in the area for a period of time after the crow was zapped and that feathers floated down from the transformer after the zapping.

Carbondale became a partly-divided town late last week as concrete Jersey barriers were plunked down on the former center stripe of Highway 133 from Dolores Way to 7/Eleven, but motorists seem to have adapted without freaking out. Apparently, the only difference between Highway 133 travel now compared to pre-construction days is that south-bound motorists can no longer illegally pass east-turning vehicles on the shoulder because there is in fact no longer a shoulder upon which to illegally pass. In-andout traffic to La Fontana and other shopping centers east of Highway 133 seems pretty much unaffected by new temporary Highway 133 configuration. As for other Highway 133 project news, east Main Street now dead-ends just before the Highway 133 intersection as round-about construction begins, but access to the Sopris Liquor & Wine shopping center and Crystal River Spas is open; the Subway bus stop has been moved one block north to Colorado Avenue. Round-about construction should last for six to eight weeks. Later in the summer, Highway 133 traffic will be shifted to the west side of the Jersey barriers while construction crews work on the east side of the highway.

Chris Hanks update Sports fans that lived in these parts in the mid-1980s probably remember Roaring Fork High School’s Chris Hanks. After earning all-state honors in baseball and football, he was a star catcher at the College of Southern Idaho, where he led the junior college ranks with 26 homeruns in 1987. The following year he was voted MVP in the National Junior College World Series. He was forced to retire from baseball due to arm injuries after spending four years with Boston Red Sox minor league teams and was later named head baseball coach at what was then Mesa State University in Grand Junction. In there somewhere, Hanks also earned a doctorate in physical education/pedagogy from the University of Northern Colorado.

So, why are you reading about Hanks here and now? After 16 seasons as head coach at what is now Colorado Mesa University, Hanks’ Mavericks recently made it to the Division II national championship game in Cary, North Carolina before falling to Southern Indiana 3-2 in 12 innings. The Mavericks lineup boasted four potential Major League Baseball draft picks, according to published reports, including: senior right fielder Austin Kaiser (the Division II Player of the Year with a .482 batting average, 11 home runs and 30 stolen bases), junior pitcher Matt Delay (9-0 with a 3.57 ERA), junior reliever Dakota Behr (six saves) and junior short-stop Nate Robertson (.366 batting average). Yes for Surls sculpture Dear Editor: I am so excited about the round-about being constructed in Carbondale and the art sculpture by James Surls. Highway 133 has needed improvement for a long time.

Our community should be honored to have a renowned artist like James Surls, who loves this community and creates inspirational pieces inspired by the nature around him.

I have lived here for 14 years with my husband, raising our two young children.

Carbondale is a unique community because of its love for beauty, nature, history and art. Our family loves Carbondale and the wonderful opportunities it provides. Art is one of those opportunities and it is inspiring to have so many different artists and art pieces enhancing our town.

I am an aspiring artist, studying graphic design at CMC. I have found James Surls to be very supportive and encouraging of local artists. I met Surls at a local art show I was a part of at the SAW gallery. It was uplifting to be able to meet an extraordinary artist and receive his encouragement.

My daughter and son are just as excited to see the new sculpture. They love looking at all of the sculptures around town. It will bring inspiration to future young artist.

I look forward to going to the Surls open house at his studio on June 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and experiencing his intellectually rousing sculptures. He is also giving an interview with KDNK on June 6 at 4 p.m. Surls is a truly exceptional artist and it is an honor to have one of his sculptures as a center piece of our community.

Can’t say enough Dear Editor: I cannot say enough about Dr. Dave Teitler of the Carbondale Acupuncture Center. I have been a patient of Dr. Dave’s for six years now (happy anniversary Doc).

Vote for a hostel Dear Editor: On Tuesday, June 10, the Carbondale Board of Trustees will again be discussing the future use of the former library building on Fourth Street. One of the four proposals for re-use of the building is my proposal to turn it into a hostel in association with Hostelling International USA. The purpose of The Carbondale Hostel will be to provide an inexpensive place to stay in Carbondale for brief periods of time for both domestic and foreign travelers, both young and old. By associating with Hostelling International USA The Carbondale Hostel will benefit from being listed in its worldwide network of hostels. In addition to both men’s and women’s bunk rooms, changes to the building would probably include enlarged restrooms, showers, a small laundry, a kitchen, secure storage, a few private rooms and an outdoor patio.

Hostelling International USA recommends that pricing of hostel lodging be one half or less of the lowest standard motel rates. In Carbondale, hostel rates would therefore be in the range of $30 or $40 a night, with lesser rates for groups. The Carbondale Hostel would be managed 24/7 by me and others hired by me.

If you think that a hostel would be a good new use for the old library building and would be good for Carbondale in general, please consider supporting the idea by showing up and by speaking up at the Carbondale Board of Trustees meeting in the evening on Tuesday, June 10, at Town Hall on the corner of Fourth Street and Colorado Avenue. Only strong public support will assure the future existence of The Carbondale Hostel.

Keep CR 106 open Dear Editor: Bicyclists and pedestrians now have the option of avoiding construction traffic by using the bike path from Crystal Village through the CRMS campus to Dolores Way. This gives trail users on the west side of the Highway 133 access to Carbondale Park ‘N Ride lot, Carbondale Community School, the Rio Grande Trail and businesses on Dolores Way. The portion of County Road 106 the CRMS campus was built around is threatened to be closed for public access. I encourage all trail users, especially those who live in River Valley Ranch and Crystal Village, to use this safe and beautiful route for your commuting and recreational purposes.

If you want to keep this route open for future use and safe commuting for you and your children, please write the Garfield County commissioners or better yet, attend the BOCC meeting on Monday, June 16, in Glenwood Springs. A final decision will be made on the vacation of County Road 106 at this meeting. If the road through the campus is vacated, trail users on the west side of Highway 133 will be forced to use the trails that parallel the highway. Permanently.

The Powers Art Center will ofďŹ cially open to the public on July 7, according to a press release. The 15,000square-foot center is located north of Highway 82, about one mile upvalley from Highway 133 and strives to teach the public about contemporary pop art through exhibitions. “Primarily the center will showcase the entire collection of Jasper Johns works on paper,â€? said spokeswoman Melissa English. The center was created in memory of the life and passion of John G. Powers. “During his life, Mr. Powers and his wife, Kimiko Powers, were deeply involved with the contemporary and pop art scene and created one of the most inuential privately held pop and contemporary art collections known,â€? English continued. “Of all the artists they collected, they had a particular admiration for Jasper Johns, one of the most inuential pop artists.â€?

Starting on July 7, the center will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. Admission is free.

Local potter lands in Carbondale jailhouse Sopris Sun Staff Report Michelle Zinanti recently opened the doors to Carbondale’s historic jailhouse at the intersection of Highway 133 and Weant — home to Harvest Pottery’s new studio/gallery. Harvest Pottery is a distinctive version of handmade pottery utilizing pumpkin, melon and squash to create dinnerware with an inviting, organic quality, according to a press release. “My objective is to make functional art that communicates abundance and the patience for ripening,” Zinanti said.

QUESTION: You’ve landed in the jailhouse. Do you see yourself as an outlaw?

ANSWER: At times.

Q: How? A: Well, I like to do things by hand. I listen to what the ants and trees have to say. I send my kid into the world instead of a classroom and I feel alone … I think all outlaws probably feel alone.

Q: How did your farm-art begin?

A: In a pumpkin field near my hometown on the Front Range. It was a colorful sunset, and the orange pumpkins were absolutely radiant in the light. I remember dashing from pumpkin to pumpkin because I wanted to meet them all, and there were so many of them, and they each called to me with their own personality.

This moment of sheer joy was the seed for a time later in life when I found clay. Since then, I’ve enjoyed three apprenticeships, smoothed clay over a variety of fruits and vegetables, and had over eight different studios. But now, I finally feel like I am home. This studio space makes it all beautiful.

Triathlon day for Carbondale Community School

Besides a whole lotta pride, feelings of both excitement and melancholy were written on the faces of graduates, family members and staff during and after the ceremony. Inaugural L.I.T. Crawl kicks off First Friday Sopris Sun Staff Report The Carbondale Branch Library’s inaugural (L.I.T.) Crawl kicks off First Friday at 4 p.m. on June 6, with different performers at each of the new Art aRound Town installations.

“I love the idea of combining literary art with visual art on location,” said L.I.T. Crawl organizer Adrianna Pevec Brown. “The live performances will enhance and inform the

viewers’ experience, making it richer and more textured than it would be if they were just looking at the sculptures. Sculptures installed around town are already an opportunity to experience art more personally, but the addition of literature and music invites us all to participate with the art in a more experiential way. Art inspires art, I do believe.”

RFBRC wants your input Sopris Sun Staff Report Carbondale residents may be most familiar with the role the Roaring Fork Business Resource Center (RFBRC) plays in administering the town’s revolving loan fund, but that is just one of the many things it does. The center was created in 2009 both as a virtual business incubator that nurtures local start-up enterprises and as a resource center that helps established businesses grow and prosper, according to a press release. From its office in Glenwood Springs, it serves entrepreneurs, businesses and governments from Parachute to Aspen.

One of the center’s key 2014 activities is a planning initiative to identify and promote other local investing (and, by extension, borrowing) opportunities, including bringing individual investors together with those in need of capital to fund and grow their enterprises, existing or imagined. Micro-financing of this sort is working elsewhere in the country and the world; recognizing this, the center’s board

and staff thought, “Why not here?”

With funding from the Laura Jane Musser Fund and the city of Glenwood Springs, the center has embarked on a series of activities to explore that question. Next up: discussion groups open to all entrepreneurs, borrowers and investors that invite the entire Roaring Fork Valley community to provide its input.

Discussions will also touch on engagement in the community and the region, employment of local workers, spending profits locally and increasing tax contributions help to pay for local services. RFCC presents diversity proponent Sopris Sun Staff Report The Roaring Fork Cultural Council brings Marilyn Tam, Ph.D. to Thunder River Theatre on June 7 at 7 p.m. Tam’s topic of discussion will be “Diversity: How to Reap the Rich Harvest of Culture, Creativity and Community.”

Tam believes that learning how to benefit from diversity and be a leader in a more diverse and global world is both a challenge and an opportunity, according to a press release. Tickets are $20 at thunderrivertheatre.com or 618-0954.

Tam is a speaker, author, consultant, board certified executive/corporate/leadership coach, and founder and executive director of the Us Foundation. Joining Tam will be her friend and worldrenowned cellist Michael Fitzpatrick. Roar-

Originally set up under Thunder River Theatre Company’s non-profit 501c3 status, the Roaring Fork Cultural Council has become one of its programs. Jim Calaway’s desire to bring the two organizations together was primarily so the RFCC could provide more diversity in its offerings. Calaway will continue to invite three to four illustrious speakers a year in all areas of world affairs. TRTC will be inviting two to three cultural arts speakers who are on the forefront of contemporary culture and art, as well as some special performances.

“Marilyn is TRTC’s first invited guest and we need your help in filling the theatre and welcoming her to Carbondale,” said a TRTC spokesman.

Memorial Services Vermeyen memorial service A memorial service will be held for Margaret Mary Vermeyen at St. Mary of the Crown Catholic church on White Hill at 11 a.m. on June 14. She died in Florida on Dec. 7, 2013.

Hill memorial service Carl U. (Dusty) Hill, a Longmont, Colorado resident of 30 years, passed away on Jan. 11 in Loveland, Colorado, at Good Samaritan Society-Loveland Village following a long illness. He was born on Aug. 22, 1942 in San Francisco, California to Verona Ulke Hill and William Oliver Hill who preceded him in death along with an older brother, Robin Sean (Robbie) Hill, and a daughter, Lisa Denise Hill. Dusty is survived

by a daughter, Teresa Irene Becker of Santa Fe, New Mexico; and a son, Dustin William Barrington of Fort Collins, Colorado; two older brothers, William Sherwood (Woody) Hill of Casper, Wyoming and Stephen Oliver (Steve) Hill of Ridgway, Colorado; and a younger sister, Anita (Neenie) Hill Reed of Spearfish, South Dakota.

Raised in Carbondale, Colorado, a 1960 graduate of Roaring Fork High School, Dusty was an inventor who enjoyed rodeo and team roping competition.

A memorial service will be held at Carbondale Community United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 7 at 1 p.m. followed by a burial service at Hillcrest Cemetery.

For great frozen yogurt . . . look towards the mountains S. Michael Jundt One is a horticulturist and one holds a master’s degree in business, and both have Colorado roots…again, and this time around those roots are growing even deeper.

Mauka Frozen Yogurt, which isn’t a chain (it’s one-of-akind) is owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Breckie and Matt Hunt, who relocated back to Colorado from Hawaii, hence the name, Mauka, which translates to “Look towards the Mountains.”

The couple met at the University of Colorado in Boulder in the early 2000’s while studying environmental studies. “I was down in the Amazon rain forests of Brazil as part of CU’s program,” says Breckie. “We were going to save the planet, but life changes direction, often. I remember the rain forest plants, amazing plants, and I had always carried an interest in horticulture, so I went that direction and Matt ended up getting his business masters at DU (the University of Denver).”

From there the duo became rather nomadic. “We’ve lived a lot of places and have done some superb traveling,” Breckie continues. “Our three years in Hawaii were wonderful and for a horticulturist it was a dream. I really became immersed

in the native plants and that was a little hard to leave. Matt still does some work there but with our first child on the way we wanted to be closer to family, so, back to Colorado.”

The yogurt idea came about because of a shop in Hawaii that both really enjoyed. “But we wanted ours to be unique, with emphasis on community and truly fine ingredients,” Breckie says. The ingredients are impressive. Local milk and Colorado cows, no GMO feed and hormone free. The yogurt is high in live cultures, probiotics and nothing synthetic or artificial. And, along with your choice of sweet sprinkles they also offer organic granolas and nuts; even the spoons are compostable.

For a real treat be sure to try their Belgian waffles. Laced with a special Belgian sugar, and cooked fresh, they’re an exciting warm addition to the shop. By the way, Breckie is short for Breckinridge, a family name spelled with an “i” back then. Breckie’s ancestors owned the land that is now Breckenridge ski resort. All day on Friday, Teitler, 50, and his office mates will provide visiting patients a variety of acupuncture, massage therapy, spiritual and emotional healing and nutritional counseling, and turn the proceeds of those visits over to whichever of the three receiving organizations is designated by a particular patient.

The last time Teitler did this, he told The Sopris Sun in a recent interview, was in 2008, and that fund-raising event was called the “Obama Rub-A-Rama,” in honor of thencandidate Barack Obama’s try for the office of president of the U.S.A. The roughly $3,000 raised at that time, he said, was handed to the local Obama cam-

paign office.

“That’s the goal for this one, as well,” he added, explaining that he hopes to raise at least $3,000 for the three recipient organizations.

Patients will be seen by Teitler or one of his associates — massage therapists Pixie Byrne or Bill Laemmel, spiritual healer Jess Jacobson or nutritionist Heather Pratt — in the office, primarily, though Teitler said there could be other options.

“If it’s nice outside, we’ll probably set up a massage chair and acupuncture table in the shaded area out back,” he explained.

He has been accepting appointments for the day’s treatments already, but said he expects there will be plenty of slots in the day’s schedule for last-minute appointments or drop-ins.

“I think we’ll fill up all the available spaces,” he predicted with a smile.

The schedule is to begin with a “singing bowls” meditation from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., followed by treatments by the five practitioners from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and an open house with food and wine from 5-8 p.m.

The proceeds from all three phases will be donated to one of the causes, he pledged.

Gift certificates are available for new patients, Teitler added, and the entire proceeds from the sale of certificates also will be donated to one of the three recipients.

The Roaring Fork Family Resource Center, with its central office in Carbondale, was

founded in Basalt in 1995, opened in the Basalt schools in 1995 “in response to an increase in student health and wellness needs,” according to a statement on the organization’s website.

Teitler was trained in a three-year program at the Colorado School of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Denver, and in late 2013 traveled to Kunming, China, in the Yuan Province, for two weeks of additional training and observation at the hospital there.

A: Delving deeper into process. Making a vessel that holds a quality beyond its shape. In essence, all artists strive to unite spirit and matter. Whether it is with clay, paint, movement, or sound, we strive to give visibility to the invisible. I’m rooting into this process.

Q: Do you have an intention?

A: Of course. Part of my intention is to craft slowly, to really pay attention. Speed is exciting and accomplishes a

Q: Why does that matter? What is so important about plants?

A: Mmmmm ‌ I personally believe that we have a variety of teachers available to us in life. In people, tools, technology, animals and plants. Some teachers are loud and some are quiet. I have an afďŹ nity for the quiet ones. I enjoy listening to them and bringing this possibility to others.
