Dear Editor: On May 22, Smiling Goat Ranch was thrilled to host the first annual GO AuTism family fun walk on the Rio Grande Trail between downtown Carbondale and the Gus Darien rodeo arena. The walk was very wellattended by both animals and humans of all ages! It made for a colorful, hopeful spectacle as it proceeded along the trail into town and ended with a party at the ranch.

For many families living with autism, being seen as different is nothing new, but being part of an event full of such welcoming joy certainly is. This is the sense of community that Smiling Goat hopes to bring to the Roaring Fork Valley with its growing Horse Boy-affiliated program. This event represents our efforts to support each family learning to deal with autism and our belief in the unique gifts that each autistic person can bring to the world.

Trustees switch meetings back to Tuesday

Following a six-month experiment in holding trustee meetings on Wednesdays, initiated at the behest of former Mayor Stacey Bernot, the Carbondale Board of Trustees [BOT] last week voted unanimously to return the meetings to their historical schedule of the second and fourth Tuesday nights of each month.

The change back to Tuesdays was suggested by Trustee A.J. Hobbs, who said at the board’s May 25 meeting that he had supported Bernot’s request back in November 2015, in order to give her the chance to see her kids perform in school-sponsored athletic events.

But Bernot stepped away from her post earlier this month to move out of town with her family, and Hobbs suggested at a recent meeting that a switch back to Tuesday meetings should be considered.

While the others on the board agreed with moving the meetings back to Tuesdays, there were some who indicated they did not feel strongly about the matter, either way it went.

Trustee Katrina Byars, while agreeing that the switch to Wednesdays was made out of respect for Bernot’s desire to meet family obligations, added that the change was made six months ago to give trustees more time at the beginning of each week to read through their packets of material about items coming before the board, which are sent out every Thursday for the meeting the following week.

In recognition of an appeal by Sopris Sun board member Debbie Bruell that the meetings be moved back to Tuesdays, Byars conceded that holding the meetings on Tuesday made it possible for the weekly paper to publish stories about the trustees’ actions the week they are made rather than a week later.

Bruell had earlier pointed out that Wednesday meetings happened too late for articles to be published on

the paper’s publication day, Thursday, due to timing constraints involving the paper’s production and printing schedule.

But, Byars added, she felt keeping the meetings on Wednesdays might be helpful to town staffers who, like the ex-mayor, might want to see their school-aged children playing in school sporting events on Tuesdays.

Town manager Jay Harrington, however, told Byars and the other trustees that he had not heard from staff members that a majority of them might prefer the meetings be held on Wednesdays.

Even so, Byars said later in the meeting, she wanted to be sure the board offers “maybe a little bit more room” for trustees and staffers who might want to take Tuesday evenings off to watch school sporting events.

“I feel strongly about taking care of staff in a way of making them feel supported,” she declared, adding, “to me, the Wednesday nights are, I think, more convenient.”

“It doesn’t make much difference one way or the other,” said Trustee Marty Silverstein, echoing Byars’ feeling about accommodating staff members who want to catch their kids’ sports activities on Tuesday nights, but also recognizing The Sopris Sun’s status as Carbondale’s “publication of record” and the value of getting trustee decisions to readers in a timely way.

Trustee Ben Bohmfalk said that in his estimation, holding the meetings on Tuesdays “historically has worked out best” and saw no reason to stick with the Wednesday meeting day.

Acting mayor Dan Richardson, agreeing that flexibility for staff and trustees should be possible, said that nevertheless, “I agree that communication about what happens at these meetings is of paramount importance” and that the Tuesday meeting day helps achieve that goal.

The matter will be on the board’s “consent agenda” for June 8, and the actual switch back to Tuesdays probably will take place in July, according to Harrington.

Candidates to become Carbondale’s new mayor will appear on the same ballot as likely U.S. presidential nominees Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump next fall, the town’s board of trustees (BOT) decided last week.

In fact, the choice of Nov. 8 for the town’s mayoral election was made in large part out of a perception that more people will turn out to vote that day than might on whatever date a special election might have been scheduled.

The election, for Carbondale voters, will be held to decide who takes over the mayor’s job that was recently vacated by Stacey Bernot after serving two years of her most recent four-year term.

The mayor’s decision came after Bernot, a Carbondale native, announced that her family got a windfall housing deal that she said “we couldn’t refuse” and have moved to a house in Redstone.

The decision was made at the BOT’s May 25 regular meeting, where town staff recommended the BOT go with a “coordinated election” on Nov. 8, meaning the town’s municipal ballot questions and candidates will be part of the larger Garfield County ballot that day.

Town Manager Jay Harrington told the trustees at the meeting that the earliest possible date for a special election would be Sept. 6, and that holding a special election would cost the town $8,000, as opposed to spending $3,000 to take part in a coordinated election.

Town Clerk Cathy Derby added that a coordinated election, which will include candidates for county, state and national offices including Clinton and Trump, is expected to draw an 85-percent turnout among local voters, while a special election could not be expected to draw nearly that level of participation.

The trustees voted 5-0 (Trustee Frosty Merriott was not present) to hold the election in November.

Town takes cornhole on the road

From May 19-26, Carbondale police officers handled 230 calls for service. During that period, officers investigated the following cases of note:

FRIDAY, May 20: At 12:40 p.m. police responded to a minor automobile accident at the corner of Main and North 3rd streets, where two cars had backed into each other. There reportedly was little damage to either vehicle, and no injuries were reported.

The Carbondale Recreation Department is sponsoring the first-ever Crown Mountain Summerfest Cornhole Tournament from 4 to 7 p.m. on June 4, according to Town Manager Jay Harrington in his weekly report to trustees, staffers and others.

Teams of two will compete in a double elimination tournament to win a set of cornhole tables. Teams must pre-register to take part; the tournament will be conducted under the rules set up by the American Cornhole Association (playcornhole.org). In other news from Harrington’s report, town officials reported that a permit application for a roof over the grandstands at the Gus Darien Riding Arena, on County Road 100 (Catherine Store Road) east of town, was approved by the Garfield County Planning & Zoning Commission at a meeting last week. The approval of the permit means the town can move forward with construction of the roof enclosure, as well as with improvements to the aging announcer’s booth at the arena. No information was available on Monday concerning when construction of the bleachers roof might begin, although town officials had indicated earlier this year that it might wait until after the summer season of Carbondale’s Wild West Rodeo is finished.

The town’s streets department was put to work last week installing a new round of sculptures under the Carbondale Public Arts Committee program Art aRound Town. The crews also were kept busy installing cedar posts and new signs on the bike trails around Carbondale, and helping with the chore of leveling the bleachers at the rodeo arena.

Town parks department employees readied the two local

cemeteries, on White Hill and along 8th Street, for Memorial Day ceremonies, and continued with repairs to broken irrigation sprinkler heads in the Highway 133 corridor, as well as the weekly round of mowing and facility maintenance of the town’s parks and athletic fields.

Other crews have finished removing anti-deer protective fencing from trees along the highway and in other parts of town, planting flower beds, trimming bushes and weeding, while the town’s arborist, David Coon, has been trimming trees and identifying those with infestations that need to be treated or removed.

At the Historic Thompson House site just off Highway 133, plans are underway to create and manage a heritage garden and orchard, beginning with a draft “memorandum of understanding” that lays out the roles and responsibilities of the town and a Colorado Mountain College Permaculture Design Class working on the project. The Roaring Fork Food Alliance, according to Harrington’s memo, has been picked as the local entity that is to sign the agreement with CMC and (with town oversight) develop and manage the project, which reportedly is to be called the “Carbondale Historic Food Forest.”

Another town project, replacement of damaged sections of tile in the men’s’ and women’s’ showers at the Gateway RV Park Campground at the intersection of Highways 82 and 133, is being put out to bid to local tile contractors. Those interested are asked to contact Recreation Director Jeff Jackel, 510-1214.

Garfield County’s LiveWell coordinator last week announced that Carbondale will be receiving a $10,000 grant toward sidewalk and trail projects identified in a recent community walking tour and included within the count’s needs assessment list.

The public works department reported that flooding of the Ella Ditch, and overflow of the East Mesa Ditch, were caused by a malfunction of an overflow system, which has been resolved.

FRIDAY, May 20: At 2:05 p.m. police responded to an accident in the 200 block of Main, in which a driver said his brakes went out and he bumped into the vehicle parked in front of his. No injuries were reported.

SUNDAY, May 22: At 10 minutes past midnight, police stopped a vehicle on Highway 133 for speeding, and subsequently arrested the driver on charges of speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and driving with a suspended license.

SUNDAY, May 22: at 1:10 a.m. police stopped a vehicle on Highway 133 for weaving and speeding, and subsequently arrested the 19-year-old driver on charges of speeding and possession or consumption of alcohol or drugs by an underage person.

SUNDAY, May 22: At 6:16 p.m. police arrested a juvenile on charges of disorderly conduct and harassment. No details about the incident were provided in a policy summary report.

MONDAY, May 23: At 4 p.m. police were contacted by the director of the Third Street Center, who reported that a painting had been stolen from the front hallway of the building, some time between the previous Thursday and the day of the report. No suspects were reported at that time.

Steve Ackerman: Around the world and back again On a hand-cycle

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer When the 2,200 or so cyclists and support personnel of Ride the Rockies 2016 get to Carbondale next week, at least one of them will be a man whose family roots are here and who, despite a serious physical handicap, is certainly no stranger to making arduous cycling trips.

Steve Ackerman, 62, is a father of two, a former runner and concert promoter, and current proprietor of a cannabis business in Fort Collins. His parents, Art and Carolyn Ackerman, are long-time and well-known Carbondale-area residents.

Steve also happens to be a paraplegic, meaning he is paralyzed from the chest down, due to a 1987 car accident along the Poudre River, which rises in Rocky Mountain National Park.

He was driving to Steamboat Springs to take advantage of a powder day, Ackerman told The Sopris Sun this week, when his car slipped off the road in the snow and down a steep embankment, a crash that left him with a broken back.

The wreck also left him with a rather grim prognosis — he would never walk or run again, which might have seemed like a kind of death sentence to some.

But Ackerman started swimming laps to get his strength back and was getting on with his life when, in 1990, he was invited to a sports equipment exposition, to work

While there, he met a man who was riding what was called a “hand-cycle� — a three-wheeled contraption powered by upper-body muscle applied to a crank positioned in front of the rider’s torso, rather than down near the ground like ordinary, leg-powered bicycles.

The man was set to ride across the U.S., from Los Angeles to New York City, in a 26-day tour, and offered Ackerman a chance to try out the hand-cycle at the expo.

June of that year another friend introduced him to someone who had just ďŹ nished doing the Ride the Rockies tour that year, and the story inspired Ackerman. “I said, ‘that sounds like a lot of fun, if only I could ride a bike,’â€? he remembered, and it was that thought that brought to mind the story of his earlier encounter with the hand-cyclist. He made a call, learned the man had ďŹ nished his cross-country tour in only 18 days, and Ackerman soon ordered a hand-cycle of his own and started riding it.

More than 2,000 people, some riding bicycles, others not, will descend on Carbondale next Saturday, June 11, for the ďŹ rst leg of the 2016 Ride The Rockies bicycling tour, which is scheduled to wind through the Rocky Mountains and terminate in Fort Collins on June 17.

The six-day tour, sponsored by The Denver Post, is in its 31st year, and costs riders $500 each.

It is planned to include ascents of Independence, Fremont, Tennessee, Vail and Ute passes, cutting through the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park on Trail Ridge Road, which the tour promoters’ website touts as “the highest through-road in the country and one of America’s most scenic byways.�

At the start on June 12, the 50-mile ride from Carbondale, at about 6,200 feet in elevation, will take the cyclists up onto Missouri Heights (7,600 feet) before coming back down to the Roaring Fork River valley oor and passing through Basalt and the long uphill pull to Aspen.

After an overnight at Aspen, the tour will head up Independence Pass and onward.

THEY’RE DONE! The Bridges High School class of 2016 held its graduation ceremony last Friday afternoon (May 27) and although it was a serious occasion, in addition to their caps and gowns and clothes underneath, the graduates wore nothing but smiles.

With only 24 students in the class, there was a feeling of intimacy and camaraderie among students, administrators and teachers throughout the commencement.

It was standing room only in the BHS gym, as proud parents, family members and friends were there to cheer the graduates and show their appreciation for the inspiring words offered by staff and students.

So, congratulations to the students that started as tiny tadpoles when they entered BHS and emerged as Frogs, ready to leap into young adulthood and search for their own individual lily pads that will float them through life.

Roaring Fork High School graduated 69 students at Saturday afternoon’s commencement; eight earned membership into the National Honor Society.

They also earned more than $1 million in scholarships, including 25 from local businesses, individuals, groups and non-profits. Class members were accepted into 65 institutions of high learning, including: the Berklee School of Music, Columbia, Dartmouth, Pratt Institute, Stanford and Swarthmore.

Ackerman om page 7 First RTR In 1991, Ackerman said, he rode in what was to be the first of many Ride the Rockies tours, from Cortez to Fort Collins.

“It was hard work, and I didn’t think I was going to make it all the time,” he said. “But I did.”

Ackerman said his only fitness regimen was riding the bike, and that he deliberately stayed away from free weights or other strength training techniques.

“That was just not my thing,” he said. “I’m not a gym kind of guy. I just rode myself into shape.”

He went on several more Ride the Rockies tours and, in 1995, joined up with the “World Ride – The Possible Dream,” an organized ride around the world for disabled athletes.

That tour, he said, covered 13,000 miles, and 16 countries, from Atlanta, Georgia to Boston, Massachusetts and then (following a plane trip to Shannon International Airport in Ireland) across the United Kingdom, central Europe and Russia. They rode through the remote reaches of Siberia, Mongolia and the Gobi desert into China, across Japan and, after flying to Los Angeles, across the breadth of the U.S. before ending up in Washington, D.C. An hour-long video of the tour on You Tube, moderated by the television personality Charles Kuralt, details the grueling pace kept up by the riders, who covered an average of 65 miles per day over 246 days.

“They’re out to show the world that disabilities don’t matter — ability matters,” intoned Kuralt.

Riding every day (except for plane or ferry trips over water), the group was made up of seven “core” riders (three hand-cycles, a one-legged man on a traditional bike and a woman whose left arm hung useless in a sling, were among the athletes) and countless “stage riders” who joined the tour along the way.

“Some came for a mile, some for a month,” Kuralt reported.

For most of the tour they were in relatively populated areas, staying in hotels and being greeted by throngs of eager and curious onlookers.

But once they got into Eastern Russia, its was a different deal — the countryside, while picturesque, was sparsely populated at best. By the time they reached Siberia and the Gobi, the bikers remarked that they felt they had left the planet.

In fact, the three hand-cyclists accomplished a first in human history, as Kuralt remarked — “Nobody has ever ridden a hand-cycle through the Gobi Desert.”

At one point Ackerman developed pressure sores on his backside, a serious health crisis that nearly forced him to quit, but he persevered and, remarkably, found his sores had healed by the time he got to D.C. The video is enough to make a viewer either supremely jealous to not have taken part, or heartily glad the chance never arose.

In California, after being greeted by his obviously proud parents, Ackerman was chosen to pronounce “the word for the day” by his fellow cyclists. He chose the word, “courage.

And I think the most important part of courage is how we give it to others — and that’s encourage. And I think that’s a big part of our mission, is to encourage others to do great things, through our example of doing a great thing.”

C’dale to Independence Pass With several other Ride the Rockies under his belt since the World Ride, Ackerman told The Sopris Sun on Monday that he plans only to run two segments of this year’s tour — from Carbondale to Aspen and then from Aspen to the top of Independence Pass.

“This is going to be the first time that I’m back out there,” he said, meaning on his hand-cycle and aiming to accomplish another great thing in a group of similarly ambitious cyclists — challenging distance, gravity and themselves in a bid to inspire others to try to achieve the possible dream.

Ride the Rockies om page 7 According to Carbondale Chamber of Commerce Director Andrea Stewart, who is organizing the tour’s overnight stay and entertainment, the Town of Carbondale has contributed $5,000 toward the activities surrounding the RTR’s visit.

At the May 25 meeting of the Carbondale Board of Trustees, Stewart said she had lined up more than 100 volunteers to staff a beer tent, food vendor booths and live music for a welcoming party scheduled for 2-8:30 p.m. at the 4th Street Plaza, downtown, where the public is invited to show up and mingle with the tour’s participants.

Participants, by agreement with tour organizers, will get lunch at the high school at noon on Saturday, and then be invited to head for town for the day’s festivities.

Stewart said on Tuesday that the day’s entertainment downtown will include a beer garden operated by official beer sponsor O’Dell Brewing, as well as wine and mixed drinks supplied by the Marble Distilling Company.

The food vendors, Stewart continued, will include pizza by the slice from White House Pizza; Black Asian Fusion delicacies from Amaizin’ Blasian and the True Media Foundation; Chicago-style hot dogs and Greek cuisine from Windy City Eats; and granola bars, cookies and snacks from Mama Bear’s Organic Bakery, as well as food and retail offerings from 25 vendors contracted by the ride’s organizers.

Entertainment will feature acoustic live music on the 4th Street Plaza stage from 2-3 p.m.; additional live music until 8 p.m.; and a performance by the group, Dance of the Sacred Fire from 8-8:30 p.m.

The cyclists will be staying at RTR Headquarters (Roaring Fork High School) where some will bed down in tents on the school grounds and others will toss sleeping bags onto the floor of the school’s gymnasium.

Carter explores mandalas in CCAH show Opens June 3 Sopris Sun Staff Report The Carbondale Council on Arts & Humanities opens “Mandalas Considered,� a solo exhibition featuring new paintings by Richard Carter, at the Launchpad’s R2 Gallery on June 3.

Carter’s Roaring Fork Valley roots reach back to the conversion of Aspen’s old Holy Cross power house to the Aspen Center for Visual Arts (which later changed to the Aspen Art Museum). His exhibition at The Launchpad uses the mandala’s form as a meditation in painting, which invokes science and geometry while making a splash with elements of intense color. “It’s an honor for CCAH to host Richard Carter in the R2 Gallery,â€? said a CCAH spokeswoman. “He has been very inuential in the upper Roaring Fork Valley’s arts community since he moved to Aspen to work as studio assistant to former Bauhaus master Herbert Bayer.â€?

Carter and two other artists spearheaded efforts that ďŹ nally led to what is now the Aspen Art Museum, also serving on the board of Anderson Ranch, The Art Base (formally the Wyly Art Center), and the Woody Creek

Community School.

In 1984, Carter began working in ďŹ lm production as a production designer on commercial and feature ďŹ lms worldwide. He still works in ďŹ lm today, but continues to paint, draw and create personal works of art that have been shown locally and nationally.

A mandala is generally deďŹ ned as a spiritual and ritual symbol in Indian religions, representing the universe.

In common use, “mandala� has become a generic term for any diagram, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically; a microcosm of the universe.

With ďŹ ve decades of painting under his belt, Carter said he hasn’t always loved the deďŹ ned border of the square, and the other geometric shapes you might ďŹ nd in a mandala. But when Carter began this project, he realized the square has a perfection about it and it recently made sense again. “It has an inherent ability to create, deďŹ ne and contain,â€? Carter said. “It is a very alluring format for my new work.â€?

The public is invited to the opening reception of “Mandalas Considered� from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 3. The exhibition will be on display weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through June 24.

Dance Initiative presents two new works from Laura Ann Samuelson and Meg Madorin Sopris Sun Staff Report Dance Initiative concludes its ďŹ rst ArtistIn-Residence of 2016 with a performance of original work created by Laura Ann Samuelson and Meg Madorin.

Over the course of two months, Samuelson and Madorin have worked together to create “We Care,� a work in progress to be performed

by Madorin in addition to collaborating with

six dancers of the Carbondale-based dance company CoMotion, to create an improvisationbased work titled “I’m Going. Middle, End.�

The performances take place at the Launchpad at 8:30 p.m. on June 3-4.

Samuelson and Madorin both hail from Colorado’s Front Range. Madorin recently relocated to Denver from New York City, where she worked with several creative artists in

with the intention of researching the intersection of improvisation and composition in collaboration with local dance artists Alya Howe, Chloe Burton, Dana Ellis, Deborah Colley, Emily Fifer and Meagan Shapiro (each members of CoMotion). “I’m Going. Middle. End.� was built by creating a sort of game that the CoMotion dancers perform by following the rules, or breaking them, according to a press release.

A son of Satank goes missing

By Pat Noel PHNH Newsletter Staff Writer There are no tidings of comfort and joy here in Geezerville, which is what we call our end-of-life storage facility: The Purple Haze Nursing Home.

It’s located in the township of Chipeta. Chipeta used to be part of the township of Satank, but we seceded many years ago when the other part of town got in an argument with this part of town on the quality and quantity of our yard art.

So we quit ’em and called our part of town “Chipeta.”

And just so ya’ know, Chipeta is way cooler than Satank.

And we’re taller.

And better lookin’.

And way smarter than them.

I mean, some of those people in Satank are so damn dumb, they were old enough to get their driver’s license in fifth grade but couldn’t pass the written test.

I mean, some of them are so dumb, they’re like dumb blondes.

“How do you make a dumb blonde’s eyes twinkle? Shine a flashlight in her ear.”

“How do you get a one-armed dumb blonde out of a tree?

Wave.”

“How abut the one where the dumb blonde goes in for a checkup and the doctor tells her that she’s pregnant and she Pat Menke

says, ‘Is it mine?’”

Anyway … I know a guy who loves these jokes. He’s been a good friend to the geezers at the Purple Haze for many years and even though he lives in Satank, he’s smart and brave and good looking, too.

Pat Menke is his name.

Patrick Louis Menke.

But … he’s gone missing.

So lemme tell you a little bit about him and in case you see him on the road, maybe you could ask him to phone home.

••• He was born in Wray, Colorado, out on the eastern plains but grew up in Greeley. He went to Greeley High and then to Colorado State College (know known as the University of Northern Colorado). At both institutions, he was a champion wrestler in the 160-pound weight classification. The sport of wrestling was one of his passions.

Another one of his passions was his college sweetheart, a girl named “Kathy,” who he met and married his senior year in college. They both graduated from UNC in 1969 and Pat landed a job at the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind in Colorado Springs, where he taught physical education, coached wrestling, learned sign language and attempted to instruct some of his blind students in the art of cross-country motorcycle racing. Obituary Pat Louis Menke 1947-2016 Pat Louis Menke died at his home in Satank on May 23, 2016, following a 40-year battle with multiple sclerosis. He was 68.

He is survived by his sons Luke and Jake Menke; his daughter-in-law Rachel Menke; and grandchildren Kaleesi, Skyler and Murphy. He is also survived by brothers and sisters Mike Menke, Bill Menke, Carolyn Layne and Barb Vergarra; and his ex-wife Kathleen Menke.

He was preceded in death by his parents Louis E. and Joan Menke, and his sister Jan Senac.

His ashes will be scattered at his favorite places in the Valley.

There will be a celebration and remembrance gathering on June 25 at the Menke home in Satank beginning at 11 a.m.

I read three Roaring Fork Valley newspapers that run identical AP inputs, the same with TV news and Clear Channel radio news, only the editorials and letters differ, thankfully, but not much.

The way one becomes a billionaire is to steal millions from a thousand, or thousands from a million, or hundreds from a hundred million. It doesn’t matter, we take it all without regret and buy a bigger airplane.

Don has done that too, times 10, if you believe him. As a pathological liar we tell stories we believe in at the time, because it works for our purpose. It can always be changed later, if the news works with me.

Science shows that the more we lie, the bigger our brain becomes. The better to keep track of it all. I guess that’s evolution.

But Kathy got knocked up while they were at the Deaf and Blind school, so with a pregnant wife and a crappy salary, he began looking for a better paying job. He found one and the couple moved to Leadville, where hard-rock miners were paid big bucks to blast molybdenum out of the Climax mines.

Later on, they came over the Divide to the Roaring Fork and Crystal River country and he took a job at the Mid-Continent coal mine above Redstone.

That’s where he discovered another passion: mining. He loved it. Loved the danger and the dark and the brutishness of it.

He once said, “Coal mining is a high-ball operation. You can’t compare it to hard-rock mining like Climax, for instance. In hard-rock, you might move 10 feet in one shift because you have to drill, shoot, muck it out and then timber it.

But mining coal, , you can move 150 or 200 feet in a shift.

That’s it, man … move, move, move. That’s what it takes. But really, I did it for the money. Wife. Two kids. I got on at the mine because I wanted to live here and I could make enough at the mines to do it comfortably. I couldn’t make that kind of money doing anything else around.”

Making good money, Pat bought a lot in Satank and built a log house on it between his mining shifts.

But then the shit hit the fan.

Especially after he got one that was motorized and local law enforcement began getting 911 calls that started out with “There’s a guy in a wheelchair … turned over in an irrigation ditch ... … with a flat tire on Highway 82 near the CMC turnoff … … stuck up at the Thompson Creek mines …”.

And the classic: “Hey. There’s a dead guy in a wheelchair hanging from the Satank Bridge!”

He wasn’t dead … then.

Although I heard a rumor … he is now.

Anyway, that’s just a rumor.

But we here in Geezerville don’t believe it.

We think he’s just missing, off in his wheelchair somewhere. on milk cartons, issuing alerts So we’re putting his picture

and asking you to be on the lookout for a man in a wheelchair answering to the following description (c/o the novelist Peter Heller): “A scarecrow who looks resigned, like he had been handsome and imposing once, but was now in tatters and just happy to be outside looking over a strong, beautiful afternoon.”

If we can’t find him soon, his family will be putting together a search party to go look for him on Saturday 25, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Menke home in Satank.

I remember once, about 25 years ago, when he though he might have to start using a wheelchair to get around. He called me one up one day to tell me he’d seen this news report on “Good Morning America” about this guy who was crippled up with MS really bad, but was able to get up on his feet and start walking just fine after he was attacked by a swarm of bees.

Knowing that my wife was a beekeeper, he told me “Bring ‘em on.”

So I did.

Every day for a week I’d go back to the hive, capture some bees in a Mason jar, go over to his house, tweezer one out and hold it against his skin, ’til it stung him. He started with three bees and told me to add a bee each day. On the day about a up to about 12 bee stings, he week later, when we’d gotten said: “Bring 50 bees tomorrow. This ain’t getting’ it done. Not enough venom.”

Seemed like plenty to me.

Those bees beat the crap out of him. He was swollen up all over and looking pretty shockey – anaphylactically speaking.

So I told him, “No way. 50 bees? They’ll kill you and the cops are gonna arrest me for murder. No more bees.”

“Wimp (or a word to that affect)” he said.

Not long after the bee incident, he was put in a wheelchair and stayed in one for the rest of his life.
